Flying High on Rubbish! British Airways has joined forces with Solena Fuels to build the world's first facility to convert landfill waste into airline fuel. The Green Sky project will take place in the Thames Enterprise Park, part of the site of the former Coryton oil refinery in Thurrock, Essex. A thousand construction workers will be hired to build the facility, which is due to be completed in 2017, creating up to 150 permanent jobs. The airline says approximately 575,000 tonnes of post-recycled waste, normally destined for landfill or incineration, will instead be converted into 120,000 tonnes of clean burning liquid fuels using Solena's integrated technology. The partnership will see BA purchase all 50,000 tonnes per annum of the jet fuel produced at market competitive rates, for the next 11 years. Willie Walsh, chief executive of British Airways' parent company IAG, said: "The sustainable jet fuel produced each year will be enough to power our flights from London City Airport twice over with carbon savings the equivalent of taking 150,000 cars off the road." Solena will use its patented high temperature plasma gasification technology to convert the waste efficiently into synthetic gas and then into liquid hydrocarbons.

Revolutionising the Management of Food Waste Considerate Supplier SWR invites you to the launch of FoodSmart! Where: WasteWorks Hall, Hotelympia, Excel London When: 28th April – 1st May 2014 FoodSmart is a service designed by SWR to enable hospitality businesses of all sizes to reduce the amount of food that is wasted in commercial kitchens. The service enables its users to reduce costs, improve profits and improve sustainable practice in the process. Whether it’s come from stock spoilage, during preparation, or from customer plates, the technology keeps track of the actual value of food as it is thrown away, providing real time data wirelessly to SWR’s consultants. Daily and weekly reports allow chefs to see the sources of wastage and make necessary changes to avoid it continuing. Thus far the system has identified the potential to reduce food wastage by up to 70%, and deliver significant cost savings. At the heart of the service is the revolutionary Waste Monitor technology from SWR’s strategic partner Winnow. SWR FoodSmart comes at a time when food waste is high on the agenda for the hospitality and foodservice industry. WRAP estimate that for 280 grams of food waste is created for every restaurant meal served in the UK representing an estimated cost of £2.5bn to the UK hospitality industry. Waste Monitor is being launched and demonstrated by chefs at Hotelympia 2014, where it has been shortlisted for the show’s Innovation Awards, recognising pioneering new products and technologies in the hospitality industry. If you have registered for our Reduce food waste and save money workshop at Hotelympia on the 29th April or 1st May, a visit to SWR's stand will follow. Other demonstrations on SWR’s stand will take place as follows: Monday 28th April at 11.30 and 14.30, Tuesday 29th April at 14.30, Wednesday 30th April at 11.30 and Thursday 1st May at 11.30. SWR will also be running an exclusive show offer at Hotelympia, offering a 25% discount on its glass crushing machine Smash & Grab, an innovative device that quickly and safely reduces glass bottles to less than one fifth of their original volume, making handling and storage much easier and disposal much cheaper. SWR can be located on stand 2310 in the WasteWorks hall. Book your free Hotelympia tickets here
