Formerly secretary general of the group, the 61-year-old has already worked alongside outgoing president Jaume Tapies for over eight years. Together with his wife Stephanie, Gombert owns Relais & Chateaux hotel Chateau de la Treyne in the Dordogne, France, a traditional “fortress” - style property said to date back as far as the 1300s. The announcement comes as the hotel consortium takes part in its annual conference in Berlin, attended by 500 member hoteliers and restaurateurs. Also announced at the conference was the reelection of CH member Malcolm Lewis to the group’s international board of directors, as chairman of the UK delegation, comprising 35 hotels and restaurants. This will be Lewis’s third term in the role. Lewis is managing director of Longueville Manor, the only R&C property in the Channel Islands, and part of the group since 1972. Of his re-election, Lewis said: “I am honoured by the faith my fellow members have placed in me and will continue to work hard to help steer this exceptional association forward.” The Relais & Chateaux group is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary next year, having been created by top French hoteliers and chefs in 1964.

HEMP We now live on the Earth ruled by technology. Yet, it seems we are bullied by natural disasters and climate change. That is probably why people start to invent and create sustainable living that appear to harmonize with the mother earth. There is an interesting sustainable housing project in the Northwest of Scotland. HEMP derives from the Hemcrete project, where industrial hemp plays the biggest role as the main construction material. Hemp fibre can give excellent insulation and thermal inertia, thus reducing the energy needed for heating. It can also absorb and trap CO2 within the Hemp-build walls. Hempcrete is super useful as it can be formed for wall insulation, flooring or roofing. It is fireproof, waterproof and even rot-proof. Other than that, you will be safe living in this Hemp house because it is 3 times more resistant against earthquakes than normal concrete! Time to give it a try methinks.

took the viewer on a journey that sets out to discover the extent and effects of the global waste problem, contrasting the beauty of the planet from space with the scenes of human detritus across the globe. Luci Isaacson, Director of Climate Vision, in Cornwall, said, 'This must-see film was moving and powerful and caused a massive stir. During the interval people struggled with their emotions when they saw the connectivity with the waste we make every day and what it is doing to our sea and our bodies, but by the end – an incredible vibrancy filled the room, full of people enthusiastically making declarations on what to do'.
