Trends that Drives Us:

15 years ago the Spa movement in hotels was the hottest new trend within the industry. Hoteliers understood that there were huge potentials for revenues and a huge sub-industry of spa consultants, spa products, spa technology suppliers has developed since then. In our increasingly fast paced world, the hushed atmospheres within these spas are a welcome and necessary refuge many tired travellers seek, indeed a lot of guests will chose a hotel because of its spa and not the other way around. But what are the environmental impacts of these temples of well-being? It is no longer, as in the Roman times, that they are just heated with wood and that the majority of the population uses a spa for their personal weekly hygiene. Spas are now a haven of luxury and abundancy, where waters run continually to calm the mind, towels are being offered in ten-folds (on average six towels are used by each spa guest for each visit!), hot showers have no limits, steam baths and saunas have to be switched on 24hrs for guests to use these at their own leisure, restorative treatments involve a lot of back-of-house waste, etc, etc, etc. So the revenues might be high, but so are the costs, both to the hotels and the environment. Most astute hoteliers and above all the engineers have caught on to this enormous energy challenge, and many have made adjustments either by implementing clever energy saving initiatives or through the use of innovative technologies. Others have chosen to reduce their impact on the environment by offering organic products for the spa treatments, of which thankfully there are many very good ones to use.In addition to carefully selecting fabrics they use, spas can also greatly reduced their environmental impacts through the interior design materials they select, through infrastructural investments to improve energy and water efficiency, and from how they source or produce their own electricity and heat. Internally, these measures can include items that are applicable throughout the rest of the hotel, for example motion sensors, efficient LED light fittings and waterefficient showers and taps. Hotel spas can also dramatically improve their environmental credentials through initiatives such as rainwater capture, and by installing technologies such as solar PV panels, ground-sourced heat pumps, waste heat recovery systems (which save energy by pre-heating water), or by purchasing renewably produced electricity from the grid. http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=aea2d0ec14

However, improvement can also be made to spa-specific items, such as energy efficient swimming pool pumps, highly-insulated hot tubs or efficient infrared sauna heating technology which are now all readily available, and those with traditional ovens can also ensure that any wood or pellets they use are sustainably sourced, or even use solar water heating panels for their hot tubs. We have put together a selection of different approaches some of our Considerate Hotelier members have chose to adopt for and in their spas, which we hope you find useful and interesing to read!

CONSIDERATE HOTELS Stories that impress us

Focus on: Organic Products in Spas

Four Seasons London at Park Lane Renowned London designer and architect Eric Parry has created an environment inspired by the influence of the surrounding parklands, making dramatic use of natural materials that are indigenous to the area. From the soothing water sculpture in the reception lobby to the stressed oak wood floors and natural grey stone tiles that connect with the trees and boulders in Hyde Park, Parry has brilliantly brought the outdoors in, setting it against the stunning backdrop of the London skyline. Additionally some of the treatment rooms have been designed to allow special access guests to indulge themselves with ease. Spa Treatments include many natural products from the following three brands:

- ESPA brings together the most effective techniques from around the world with the finest quality natural ingredients and skincare advances. - The Organic Pharmacy, founded by homeopathic pharmacist Margo Marrone: the products are scientifically created to heal the body, inside and out, with organic, medicinally-based remedies. The Organic Pharmacy’s products are free from artificial preservatives, colorants, fragrances and petrochemicals, and are 95-99% organic. Each unique product delivers exceptional results while respecting the environment from plant to finished product. - Omorovicza: The story of the company began more than 2,000 years ago when the curative properties of Hungary’s thermal waters and thermal mud were first discovered and the famous baths built. Today, the luxury skin care line harnesses this ancient health and beauty phenomenon with Mineral Cosmetology TM and takes natural, anti-aging skincare http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=aea2d0ec14

beauty phenomenon with Mineral Cosmetology TM and takes natural, anti-aging skincare to a new level.

Chateau Saint Martin Spa The hotel has the Green Globe Certificate and uses organic and natural skincare, protecting your skin and the environment: as part of its Green Actors programme, Château Saint-Martin & Spa has completed its spa offering with luxury cosmetic brand Bamford, offering 100% organic products that are eco-responsibly harvested. Made in England, and certified by the Soil Association, Bamford never uses any artificial or genetically modified ingredients and makes it a point of honour to create products only using natural colours, fragrances and preservatives. In order to reduce its impact on the environment, Bamford has chosen to create all its packaging from recyclable materials. Thus, every single product from the brand comes in cardboard boxes or glass bottles. Born from a desire to use the benefits of natural products to improve your health, Bamford offers a wide range of organic products to cleanse, protect and rejuvenate your skin. The body treatment collection uses aromatic essential oils blended from herbs and plants chosen for their scent and specific properties.

Toshiba's new three-pipe heat recovery VRF delivers world-class energy efficiency performance Toshiba’s latest generation of super heat recovery VRF air conditioners, the SHRM-i series, is the most efficient product on the market at part-load conditions. The groundbreaking new range, available now, becomes the new industry benchmark in the competitive three-pipe VRF sector. Toshiba believes performance ratings for systems at full capacity can be misleading: “in http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=aea2d0ec14

the UK, air conditioning only operates at maximum capacity for a small proportion of the time“ says David Dunn, Toshiba’s commercial director. “For most of the time, systems operate at part-load – therefore it makes sense to focus on efficiency in this range.” The SHRM-i three-pipe system is designed to deliver simultaneous cooling and heating in large buildings such as hotels with spas, recovering energy from areas of excess heat and redistributing it to parts of the building requiring heating. The system can also harness this energy using a unique VRF boiler accessory, to delivery low-cost domestic hot water for a building. As a result, the requirement to eject waste heat to the atmosphere is significantly reduced, again boosting system efficiency.

CONSIDERATE PERSONALITY People that move us Susanne Kaufmann was born and raised in the Bregenz Forest, a unique valley in the Alps where the knowledge of the healing powers of nature are passed down from generation to generation. From an early age, she has always been fascinated by the idea of using the intense effect of the Alpine fauna and flora for beauty, health and comfort, however applied in a contemporary manner. She began to implement this idea in a very special place, the Susanne Kaufmann Spa in the Hotel Post Bezau.

Together with a team of pharmacists and dermatologists, she developed powerful products for treatments in their spa manufactured from precious natural ingredients with the aim to deliver optimal results. Susanne Kaufmann Organic Treats: Skin-specific formulas and the greatest possible compatibility were part of the concept from the very beginning. Today, the internationally renowned holistic care line ‘Susanne Kaufmann Organic Treats’ comprises more than 60 exceptional products.
