panel to listen to ‘Let’s get transparent - Why Sustainability is good for your Business’ PLUS- and not to be missed!!! The Considerate Hotelier: Launch of our annual e-zine covering all the details of the Awards: The Winners, The Sponsors, and their stories. If you haven’t read it yet, here is your chance again!
Trends that Drives Us:
As you can see from all of the events we are participating in, the drive for sustainable design in both software and hardware to us are key to protecting our planet for more than just one reason: 1. By re-using materials we put less pressure on our already scarce and precious resources. 2. By up-cycling used materials into new ones we engage the creative forces of the nation, we revive the handicraft sector by giving them new projects and we create less waste. 3. From an energy saving point of view - it makes sense to take the latest technology into consideration as they are usually at the forefront of not only innovative energy saving solutions but also creative design.

The Zetter Townhouse
Park Plaza Westminster
Sustainability and environmental awareness were at the very heart of the decision-making process when building The Zetter Townhouse, London. As a result, it has been designed to be an energy efficient hotel, using sustainably sourced and environmentally sensitive building materials and controlled by an intelligent building management
Below are the sustainable initiatives implemented by the Park Plaza Westminster: - 1200 Shower Heads have been changed, which has reduced water consumption from 14 litres per guest a day down to 7 litres, which also reduces energy costs. - Heat Saver Pool Cover, looks cool and stores the heat, reduces heat

intelligent building management system. Some of their eco-friendly features and practices include: - Own borehole beneath the building: not only does this provide you with the freshest London spring water, but they also use it to flush loos and cool both
and stores the heat, reduces heat condensation which in turn reduces overall humidity in the building and therefore less damage overall. - Re-used the concrete of the previous building, which was knocked down in the construction of the current one.
fridges and bedrooms.
- Triple- glazed windows. - Eco-Decking with Rice Husks rather than wood- Carbon Footprint saving on transport. - All paints by Paint-Plus, one of the most Eco friendly paints - All used Linens & Towels go to local homeless charities. - In-house laundry with Ecolab products. - In-house bottling plant (140,000 bottles a year) - The bedroom products are by Elemis and are environmentally friendly, and the packaging is able to be recycled. - The carpet is wool which cools or stores heat naturally and the rubber underlay was made from old car/lorry tyres.
- An energy loop system: a bit technical, but basically it means we swap energy around – as you heat your room, it helps us cool our fridges. - Natural light and ventilation: this is provided by The Zetter’s central semielliptical atrium. - Occupancy detection systems in the bedrooms: when the guests aren’t there, minimal energy is burned. - Also, when a bedroom window is opened the air conditioning has been designed to cut out - just like that! - All the timber used in the building’s construction was purchased from sustainable sources, and all the paints used in our interiors are environmentally-friendly. - The bath and shower products have been chosen for their environmentally friendly packaging and the formulations, which contain no parabens, phthalates, petrol-derived ingredients, mineral oil, urea, DEA, TEA or propylene glycol.
Strattons, Norfolk A pledge for Wool! Strattons, Norfolk has installed 500ml of lamb’s wool insulation throughout the buildings which achieves the following; Cool in summer - Warm in winter: When the outside temperature increases and begins to heat the wool, it releases moisture. This has a cooling effect on the fibre, which reduces the flow of heat to the inside of the building. This can reduce peak temperatures by up to 7oC when compared to a building in which alternative forms of insulation are installed. In the winter the absorption of moisture by wool insulation http://us5.campaign-archive2.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=467eb99e14

insulation are installed. In the winter the absorption of moisture by wool insulation can increase peak temperatures by up to 4oC when compared to buildings in which alternative forms of insulation are installed. It is hygroscopic, can absorb and desorb water vapour without compromising its thermal efficiency. It is therefore ideal for use on roofs and timber frame walls designed to avoid a damaging build-up of moisture by allowing water vapour to migrate through the structure. Energy efficiency, the cleaning, air-laying and thermal bonding processing during the manufacture of wool insulation consumes minimal energy. It uses only 14% of the energy used to manufacture glass fibre insulation. Condensation Control; Wool generates heat when it absorbs moisture from the air. That energy is known as the 'heat of sorbtion' and account for the warmth felt by wearers of woollen clothes in winter conditions. When the air is saturated with water vapour, wool absorbs some 40% of its dry weight in moisture, producing 960 kilojoules of heat energy for every kilogram of dry wool. This warmth isn't noticeable inside the building but it acts to prevent condensation in construction cavities by maintaining the temperature above the dew point. Safety - This fleece is insect proofed by the inclusion of naturally derived additives, contains no permethrin, pyrethoids, pesticides or formaldehyde. It is harmless and can be installed without gloves or protective clothing. Fire Safety - Wool has a higher fire resistance than cellulose and cellular plastic insulants - it does not burn but rather melts away from an ignition source and extinguishes itself. It is treated with a non-hazardous, naturally derived fire-proofing agent to improve its intrinsic fire resistance. Thermafleece complies with BS 5803-4 (Spread of Fire) achieving results of zero for ignitability, spread of flame and heat evolved. Durability, fleece quilt adapts to the shape of rafters, joists and studs to provide a permanently tight fit. Properly installed, it will retain its low density and thermal performance with a life expectancy in excess of 50 years.

Considerate Supplier, JAB Anstoetz is committed to being a greener business, so since 2002 has worked with local government and councils to protect the environment and natural resources. In 2004 one of the largest ever photovoltaic installations in North Germany was installed on the flat roof of the JAB Anstoetz headquarters in Bielefeld. With a total surface area of 3,500 square metres, the panels generate electricity equivalent to the consumption of 100 households. Since December 2011 a block-type thermal power station fuelled by biogas has provided part of the heating the company requires with the oil-fired heating being completely shut down. JAB’s projects also help to retain and enhance the cultural heritage of historical buildings. The St. Paul's Hotel at 153 Hammersmith Road was originally built in 1884 to house St. Paul's Boys School. The Neo Gothic red brick building, designed by Alfred Waterhouse, the well-known architect of the Natural History Museum, is situated between the Talgarth and Hammersmith roads which was actually countryside at that time. Jacqueline Summers Interiors was appointed as the interior design consultant for the period conversion of the Grade 2 listed building, which was to become a brand new 35 bedroom luxury 4* hotel with restaurant and bar, full conference and banqueting facilities, which has recently been completed.

The sympathetic renovation and conservation project was carefully planned out and designed by Jacqueline, to capture the romance of the building whilst adding value to the product for the client. Rich with history and attractive period features, it can again stand proud after years of dilapidation and neglect, having been brought up to date with a contemporary design that captures the essence of the elegance of an early Victorian era. This handsome building can again receive the attention it deserves on the inside as well as the outside. JAB Anstoetz was the main supplier of fabrics used throughout by Jacqueline for the bedrooms and public areas for the curtains, bed throws and cushions. The simple plain fabrics used and drapery design, along with the decorative antique effect curtain poles JAB Anstoetz supplied for the Melody Restaurant were in perfect keeping with the contemporary period scheme. Karen Brennan, JAB Anstoetz's UK contract manager, was on hand every step of the way providing a professional, helpful service from offering a measuring service, to co-ordinating the supply and treatments of the contract fabrics for St Paul’s hotel.
