August 2014: Beekeeing, Live Walls, Roof Gardens and Biodiversity
The obvious reason for choosing this topic is clear; it’s summer, we all love flowers but above all we are concerned about the future of the bee. However, once you dig further into this topic you realise that there are many, many benefits to integrating these features, which will enable you to support bee populations in your hotel, and in particular city hotels. The list is long, but to highlight just a few, roof gardens and live walls can help with insulation and your building’s thermal performance. Additionally they can provide herbs and vegetables for your kitchen, give employees breathing spaces and reduces stress levels, which means there are positive impacts for both your team and your guest’s health and wellbeing. These are just a few of many but if you scroll through the rest of the issue, you will find lots more inspiring and interesting information and stories. We are also delighted to introduce as a new regular feature - an interview with a http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=48b0acbefe

At Trenython Manor in Cornwall the 24 acres of the estate have been carefully planned to provide some great areas for parents and children to explore together. This has included the creation of a ‘Bee and Butterfly Garden’ incorporating 20 bird and 4 bat boxes, 4 bee logs, feeding stations, a hibernaculum for slow worms and reptiles, along with log piles and fallow areas to attract more wildlife
The Lancaster, London hotel made headlines in 2009 when it became the first hotel to install beehives on its roof, managed by the hotel’s ‘Bee Team’. Honey produced by the half a million bees is used in dishes served in the hotel’s restaurant. Then in 2011 the hotel launched the ‘London Honey Show’ to bring together bee-keepers and honey producers from around London into a forum where they could share tips, indulge in some friendly competition and browse stalls offering bee related products. Needless to say it was also popular with hotel guests.
Another solution in the urban environment is to make use of the valuable roof space on top of hotels. At One Aldwych specially designed ‘grow pods’ have been used on the roof garden to grow herbs and vegetables for the hotel kitchen. The containers are made from recycled material and are fed by a mixture of harvested rain water, leftover water from bottles and ice melt.

It is easy to assume that without such spacious surroundings it is very difficult to enhance biodiversity in a city hotel location. London’s largest living wall on Rubens at the Palace hotel in central London has demonstrated that this isn’t necessarily true. Standing at 350 square metres with over 10,000 ferns, herbaceous plants and 16 tons of soil, its wall is packed with over 20 seasonal plant species including buttercups, crocuses, strawberries, spring bulbs and winter geraniums. The flowers have been chosen to ensure the wall is ‘in-bloom’ all year round, attracting wildlife such as birds, butterflies and bees, and the permanent feature provides a vibrant focal point for the local area. The wall’s unique design enables it to capture rainwater from the roof of the building in dedicated storage tanks helping to reduce the risk of flooding due to low absorbency of urban surfaces. In addition, the wall helps improve local air quality, deaden noise and helps to keep the hotel cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Beach Honey Where bees are enjoying the breath of the sea Tosca Bio, a supplier of a selection of high quality finest produce from Tuscan organic or biodynamic agriculture, offers amongst its products a delicious and unique honey, known as The Beach Honey. This product reflects our suppliers growing international connections. It comes from the regional natural Park "Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli", an uncontaminated area, rich in typical Mediterranean vegetation, located between Pisa and the Puccini Lake “Lago di Massaciuccoli”, where the beehives are situated only 100 metres away from the sea. Mrs. Donatella Baldi, a charismatic lady from Pisa , is the producer of this tasty honey, unique for its organoleptic properties. She has about 60 beehives positioned in two different places within this nature reserve. “The bees collect nectar from the flowers native to this part of the coast, especially Cistus and Helichrysum flowers”, explains Donatella. “The Helichrysum flower, although almost devoid of nectar, give to the honey its distinctive aroma thanks to its essential oils”. The Beach Honey is not only very aromatic and has a dark note but is also extremely tasty and lends itself very well to hard cheeses like "Pecorino di Pienza". It is also delicious if enjoyed on a piece of dark bread with butter. This honey is available in jars of 125 (4,4 oz) and 250 http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=48b0acbefe

(8,8 oz) grams and is distributed by the fine Tosca Bio. ToscaBio’s portfolio also includes four further honeys from the Tuscan estate “Il Palagio” owned by British rock star Sting. This estate produces acacia, chestnut, forest and the rare heather honey.

Prior to this I worked specialising in cooling machines, heat exchangers and as an environmental surveyor, I am currently studying for IEMA environmental management to gain associate membership Life mottos Ask the universe, have faith it will provide People that inspire me David Attenborough for bringing us all an intimate insight into life on earth and was one of the first to talk about global warming, as a consequence of human activity, calling for an international agreement to take action.
An unforgettable place travelled to in the last year Achill island Co Mayo, Ireland's largest island a rugged landscape, it has a breath-taking beauty, Great beaches, whale watching, there are deserted villages and Neolithic tombs Your favourite Hotel Druid Stone Hotel in Pembrokeshire, Wales - a small family run hidden gem. They have installed a water recycling system, the waste water from the round house cottage filtered down through reed beds, which also acts as a breeding pond for dragon flies. Cottages have been insulated with sheep’s wool, a masonry stove which stores heat in the walls, solar panels and a wind generator. Bee keeping/ Live walls - What does it mean to you? Healthy bee populations are vital to life but have fallen dramatically in recent years, known as CCD colony collapse disorder, likely due to the use of new pesticides: neonicotinoids, affecting all pollinating insects such as butterflies and moths, and is banned in some European countries. In the UK it is available in shops, so that consumers use it on their lawns and greenhouses without realising the damage they are causing. I would encourage everyone to make bee hotels for wild solitary bees, through schemes such as Capitol Bee in London, and grow bee friendly plants on roof spaces. Install Green live walls as art and urban agriculture, which can provide vital green wildlife corridors, and could form part of the city’s rain water management system, recycling grey water, improving air quality and helping to keep a building cool great ways to transform our cities. West London’s Meanwhile Gardens is my favourite urban space, it has a sky garden on a flat roof with poly tunnels, green roofs, bee hotels and community wildlife spaces including an electric floating classroom. http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=48b0acbefe

Oldest clothes I have a vintage Levi big E jacket from the 1960s, my daughter has vintage dresses from the 1940s. I like to support charity shops knowing that I’m treating myself and supporting someone else. The last meal that truly impressed me My friend, Chef Freddie Flamme invited me to his house in Calais and cooked a pizza from scratch, served with fresh mussels brought from the quayside in the morning. He handpicked all the ingredients from selected stalls at the local market, the children all got a treat of violet lemonade at the café; The whole day was wonderful. Responsible tourism/business management The tourism industry has grown very fast and is now the world’s biggest industry. We are aware of the need to act responsibly and there are brilliant programmes like GTBS and LECS. Tourism has to take the lead to redress the balance as part of the solution and not the problem. We need to do this now before anywhere worth visiting has vanished and our businesses become unsustainable. Favourite website I like Wikipedia because you can use these sites to very good effect and any project I undertake I usually start off with a general search with the letters DIY. I am a fan of the DIY culture, sharing ideas and asking questions I travel to work by converted my push bike to electric with a kit, its paid for itself in 3 months, saving me around £35 per week, I want to show others that we can commute to work on a bike and arrive in a suit without any sweat. Cycling and electric bikes are becoming the transport of choice for cities Seasonal and local favourite produce I adore blackberries, blackberry pie, summer fruits mixed with yogurt, in juices, so abundant and free they remind me of my childhood. The best ones I ever found were growing next to a lavender bush and had an amazing taste combination. Sustainable company My local health food shop, Portobello Whole Foods, has provided me with brilliant delicious and sustainable groceries for the past 20 years. My biggest worry for the future Climatic change. I recently saw a documentary on BBC 4 on our planet from the air: “Home” by photographer Yann Arthus Bertrand and French director Luc Besson. It’s a stunning depiction of how Earth’s problems are interlinked, and everyone should watch this. My biggest hope “It’s too late to be a pessimist” It’s time to come together, it’s not what is gone, but what is left, half the world’s forests are left, we all have the power to change, so what are we waiting for? If we all start thinking about what we buy, take care of what we catch, produce our own renewable energy and resources, stop pollution, guarantee sustainable re-forestation and a world devoted to peace and nature.
CONSIDERATE EVENTS Moments to inspire you Given the success of the last few events Considerate Hoteliers organised for its members and suppliers, such as Hotelympia in April, the Vini Italiani evening in May and the joint CH/SRA afternoon in July we are looking forward to offering you yet another opportunity to exchange experiences with other hoteliers, network and inspire as well as be inspired
