We all depend on transport every day for nearly everything that we do, be it getting to work, taking the children to school, shopping, outings and getting to our hotel destinations. Thus we all add our little or bigger bits to CO2 emissions into the http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=3241546571

atmosphere. However, there is also the transport of goods, which needs to be considered at a hotel. The delivery bay is usually a hub of activity the whole day long with goods being delivered, laundry being picked up, rubbish taken away etc. Currently transport accounts for 25% of UK CO2 emissions. Not only does this add to the cause of man-made global warming and climate change,

emissions also create localised air pollution. This month we explore the innovations in travel and transportation helping to reduce its impact, both environmentally and socially.

Trends that drive us: When travelling internationally, for reasons of affordability and journey time the most common choice is air travel. However, it is well documented that air travel is very carbon intensive, so what can be done about this? Emissions from air travel within Europe are now included in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme in a bid to use market based measures to achieve cuts.

Airlines, airports and air traffic

controllers are working to improve operational measures and technology to cut fuel use. The industry is working to develop new alternatives to traditional jet fuel, though the results of this work are still relatively far off. When travelling for short haul journeys it is always worth considering the alternative of rail travel instead of flying. Taking the train from London to Paris instead of flying emits 91% less CO2 and actually takes less time when you take into account getting to the airport, check in and travel time! Many guests will travel to a hotel using their own vehicle for the flexibility and convenience that this provides. Fortunately over the last few years the development of hybrid and all-electric vehicles has really taken off thanks to major manufacturers finally investing in these technologies. By switching to electric transport, emissions are no longer emitted from the vehicle, CO2 is reduced by at least 50% and electric

vehicles charged using renewable energy are almost completely CO2 and emission free. One drawback of using electric vehicles is the limited range, meaning that owners must plan when and where they will top up the juice. Several hotels have taken the initiative to install charging points in their parking areas to encourage guests to arrive with electric vehicles. New developments in charging and battery technology mean that waiting overnight for a full charge will soon become a thing of the past. A European Union funded initiative called the Rapid Charging Network has been set up to create a multistandard rapid charge network for electric vehicles across the UK and Ireland. With the support of four major car manufacturers the project aims to install 74 rapid charge points meaning electric vehicles can travel the length and breadth of the country only stopping for short periods to re-charge.

When guests arrive at the hotel there is much that can be done to help equip them with the knowledge to make sustainable transport decisions. For example providing bespoke travel information to guests about the public transport, cycling and walking options available to them may encourage greater use of alternatives to the car. Providing onsite services and facilities such as loan bikes or sale of tickets for public transport will also give guests more options. E bikes are becoming ever more popular, allowing cyclists of all ages and abilities the freedom to travel further with low effort and low impact on the environment. E bikes are especially popular in hilly areas, see this website for an example of what is available in one Austrian region. Please click here for more ideas about guest travel services (the Westtrans scheme is in London, but is applicable anywhere). If, as a hotel, you want to investigate reducing your transport related CO2 there are opportunities in the way you chose your suppliers and their product delivery. Bundled delivery is a new key development on this front, where various hotels within the same area agree on choosing the same product from one supplier. This approach can obviously also be applied to other services such as laundry or waste collection and we at Considerate Hoteliers are of course always there to hook you up with other hotels (think of us as a very considerate dating agency!) in your area to http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=3241546571

arrange such a bundling effort - so please do just let us know should you be interested in a transport-sharing project to reduce your CO2 bottom line.

CONSIDERATE HOTELS Stories that impress us

Lasswade Country House - Llanwrytyd Wells In 2012, as a spin off of Green Tourism Business Scheme and Green Holidays Wales, three Welsh hotels all GTBS Gold award holders, set up “Welsh Road Trips, a destination marketing tool aimed at attracting visitors/guests through public transport and the developing market of electric cars. This included the installation of 32 amp car charging points which was the first in mid Wales, the provision of electric bikes and integrated I.T. technology (through sat nav for the use in conventional cars), mountain bikes and walking: this enabled people to explore pre-set routes allowing them to experience everything from landscapes, buildings, forna and flora on pre-set routes and of course geo-caching. Welsh Road Trips was and is very closely associated with the development of the Bbug, a small fun electric, road legal buggy carrying two passengers. Welsh Road Trips also worked very closely with Zero Carbon World (the provider of our hook up points). The hotel has also established a contact at Bristol City Council with Peter Fryer, Green Development Officer - this was because Bristol has the second largest group of electric car users in the country. W.R.T. has now opened up Wales to those owners, giving us a unique selling point. ZCW gave W.R.T. 100 re-charging sets distributed throughout Wales. It is worth also mentioning that His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, also installed one at his home in Wales. The Morgan Car company in Worcestershire built an electric car http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=3241546571

and they used the W.R.T. network to test the car in Wales.

One Aldwych in 2013 The hotel adapted a push bike to run on electric battery power for commuting to work, made to meet European standards, effectively creating an e-Bike. We also designed a wind charging station to ensure that it is carbon neutral. This is a concept demonstration to provide inspiration and alternative transport to tubes-cars motor bikes. The engineering team assisted anyone who wished to set up or convert their own bike. The emergence of the electric bike for commuting as part of the London cycling revolution will change the way we travel in cities within 5 years.

What else have our members done?

Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in 2013 Installation of 2 x electric car charger points to the front of the hotel available for any residents (or non-residents) to charge their electric cars at no cost to them.

Cavendish London Concierge promotes hybrid taxi's and offer 50% off parking fees for electric cars.

Lancaster London Considerate Champion Clare Wright feels she needs to influence guest habits. For example, encouraging guests to arrive via public transport and encouraging them to enter into a competition to win major prizes having provided proof of travel. Another method is to provide eco or hybrid cars to and from the Lancaster London if a guest requests a taxi, to ensure all guest journeys are more environmentally friendly.

Cedar Manor - Windermere Installed 2 electric bikes and joined the electric bike network. They advertise 20% off bike hire if coming by train and this is also the case for non-hotel residents, if they can produce valid train tickets.

Macdonald Windsor Hotel In 2014 they became the only hotel in Windsor that has a electric car charging point which they allow local residents to park and power up free of charge as this is part of the hotel's ethos and commitment to reduce its global carbon footprint and encourage guests and local residents to do so as well. The initiative further supported the hotel's drive to support and enhance the Macdonald Hotel and Resorts ROOM 15 Environmental policy. More hotels with electric car charging points here.

Award Sponsor Berendsen drives road safety in London Berendsen, the leading provider of textile and laundry services to hotels and hospitals across the UK, has paved the way to improved road safety for cyclists and pedestrians in the capital by investing in a successful pilot project at its Merton site. As part of the project, Berendsen worked alongside a leading telematics solution provider to fit a number of its Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) with reliable and effective safety equipment. This included side and rear view cameras that are linked to an in-cab monitor enabling the driver to view live images of the road users around him or her. Furthermore, audible warning pods were fitted to both sides of the vehicles. When a driver signals to turn either left or right the audible pods warn other road users, informing them via a short pre-recorded voice message that the driver intends to turn. Road safety is a key concern in London and in 2013, 14 cyclists were killed in accidents, nine of which involved HGVs. As well as new safety equipment, Berendsen, which relies on HGVs to transport large volumes of linen around the capital city, provides its drivers with frequent training and safety briefings on how minimise risks to other road users. Following the successful trial period, the laundry http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=dde11f98e5ce03d93968ee089&id=3241546571

services provider intends to roll out the safety technology across the fleet of vehicles at its facility in Merton, which washes over 2 million pieces of linen a week from hotels within London and the surrounding areas.

“Combined, drivers at our busy Merton site can cover 7,000 miles a day in and around London, so promoting safe driving and awareness of other road users has always been a priority for Berendsen,” says Tom Bush, Logistics Manager at Berendsen. “We’ve invested in some of the latest technology to boost the measures that we already had in place and we’ve been pleased with the positive feedback that we’ve had from our drivers as a result. We’ll continue to make improvements where we can and a key aspect will be to ensure that we’re consistently assessing and enhancing our training so our drivers are armed with the skills and knowledge they need to continue sharing the road safely with other users.” Tom initially supported TfL (Transport for London) as a pioneer partner for many years to promote the importance of road safety and is currently a member of the TfL Freight Operators Recognition scheme (FORS). Utilising his knowledge of and experience of HGVs and safety within the capital, Tom pioneered the Berendsen road safety project with support and funding from within the organisation.
