Tuesday 28th May 2014 Welcome to the Bravo Zulu Awards! Ladies and Gentlemen, Considerates All, may I present to you our distinguished short listed properties vying for the Considerate Hotel of the Year 2914 Awards. Having achieved the distinction of being short listed they have already announced their arrival. On Friday 13th June at a Gala Lunch at the Langham London a number of them will be walking away clutching an award. We wish them all every success, good luck and even greater acheivements.. A hearty Bravo Zulu (Maritime signal for Well Done) to all those listed below.

Considerate Hoteliers have announced this year’s Considerate Hotel of the Year 2014 short list. We are extremely proud to make this announcement and when one reviews the list it really does cover the different extremes of the hotel world. It is also the first year when we have created a Considerate Housekeeping Team of the Year Award. It is a time to sing some more hymns of untold heroes and pioneering tales. Exciting times indeed!

In this week’s News Bulletin we are offering you a brief glimpse of the achievements of those hotels that have made it onto the short-list. The Considerate Hoteliers Award Short List by Category goes as follows:

International Considerate Hotel of Year (sponsored by Gilchrist &Soames):

Chepu Eco-Lodges (Isla Chiloe, Chile) All of the lodges’ water is collected from the rain and filtered in the soil with a innovative catching system that keeps the water fresh and clean. They then store it in tanks over a hill to maintain a constant water feed in case of a pump failure. To pump water into the tanks they use wind energy so saving water is also a way to save energy.

Hotel Storchen (Zurich, Switzerland) Via the project with www.naturli.ch the hotel supports the local producers not only for their own hotel but have motivated 55 other hotels so far to use this supplier for local products especially for breakfast in the hotels.

Park Hyatt Hadahaa (Maldives) The resorts has developed their very own hydroponic garden and while guests have the freedom to wander in for a look around they have also

created a nature dining menu where guests are surrounded by the lush vegetation for a meal highlighting the produce of the island. The Hydroponic Garden gives the hotel the opportunity to grow its own lettuce, herbs and some vegetables such as cherry tomatoes, spinach, kale, asparagus beans and zucchini.

Palais Namaskar (Marrakech, Morocco) The hotel writes a CSR news letter at least once per month, in which they inform the staff about related happenings such as projects that have been successfully completed or about new initiatives. The staff are also encouraged to share their CSR ideas through another Green Book which has been placed in the Staff Canteen.

UK Considerate Hotel of the Year (sponsored by Gram)

Best Western Monkbar (York) They are gearing up for Tour de France’s “Festival of Wheels and Meals”! hosting their own month-long “Festival of Wheels and Meals”! In the run up to Le Grand Depart, the hotel will be offering incentives to customers arriving by bicycle and encouraging staff to come to work on their bikes, plus creating a special menu comprising of classical and contemporary French dishes and beverages.

County Hotel (Essex) The hotel is in the process of installing biomass boilers to provide 100% of their central heating and hot water which will reduce C02 emissions from 85,000kg to 11,590kg pa from this source. A power perfector unit installed in 2008 has given them a 15% reduction in electricity consumption.

Four Seasons London at Park Lane (London) In the kitchen, a grease extraction system has been installed to treat kitchen air with ultraviolet light which turns grease into power, making the air emissions cleaner.

Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons (Oxfordshire) In 2013 Le Manoir completed the planting of the Apple Orchard. Currently 500 apple trees of 9 varieties and differing ages have been planted in order to create a roof top orchard. 69 different varieties of apple were cooked and tested in order to identify the right variety of apples required to sustain the needs of the kitchen throughout the year for the varied requirements of Raymond Blanc and his team of chefs.

Macdonald Windsor (London) The hotel staff has been given piggy banks to fill with small change and this will be given to Blue Lake Horse Rescue charity. This formed part of their Earth Day celebrations where they also gave all guests and 750 agents packets of seeds. The hotel also sold a “Greentini” cocktail with 10% of the proceeds going to Blue Lake charity.

Trenython Manor (Cornwall) Partnering with the Fowey Festival of Words and Music 2014 which strived to support a more sustainable community locally. The hotel offered its property and grounds to the organisers of the festival in May, in order to develop a more sustainable, yet affordable and fun family weekend, with an emphasis on engaging with nature.

Considerate Marketing Initiative Year (sponsored by Eco-Pure Waters)

Strattons (Norfolk) Purchase of an orchard for fruit production entirely for the hotel. A reduction in organic waste by scrutinising this waste stream plus 355kg of coffee grounds distributed from the hotel to allotments and gardens, getting other cafes in the town involved. Creating a Brecks pop-up restaurant for the Brecks Food Festival showcasing the best of the region’s produce & getting local MP Liz Truss & Henry Dimbleby of Leon restaurants in London to attend and reveal to our diners the new government white paper on school dinners before it hit the national media. Electric re-charging points installed in the car park.

Draycott is working with TFL and the Cycle to Work schemes. The hotel has invested in the Cycle Superhighway Workplace Offering, which means that the hotel is eligible for cycle storage, cycle safety checks and cycle training sessions for staff (for staff not comfortable with cycling around London). This encourages staff to use a green method of transport when commuting to and from work.

Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons (Oxfordshire) Raymond Blanc is working with The Society of Garden Designers and Garden Organic whereby they have commissioned a competition to create The Raymond Blanc National Heritage Garden in the grounds of Le Manoir. The competition was conceived in order to raise awareness of organic gardening methods and the importance of preserving knowledge and practicing heritage varieties, with the goal of creating the garden using sustainable materials, upcycling old materials and of course planting heritage varieties.

One Aldwych (London) Global Garden –growing pods for kitchen herbs – made from waste, recycled containers, specially designed grow pod, to ensure water efficiency of 90% to that of a conventional planter, containers or grow pods. They can be adapted to grow anything, anywhere, using harvested rainwater, water left over from mineral bottles and ice melt, the idea being to demonstrate that food can be grown on a roof top in London or a car park in Delhi.

Park Plaza Riverbank (London) Putting the ‘Social’ into ‘Corporate Social Responsibility: A key focus for 2013, along with working towards an accreditation was to focus on the sometimes forgotten community aspect of CSR. One key initiative that formed part of this was chief steward, Karol Pyra (Green Team member) organising weekly ‘clean ups’ in the park behind the hotel . This is a great example of a simple initiative put forward and carried through which makes a tangible difference to the hotel’s neighbours.

Recommended to them by the Dorchester London, the hotel invested in a VITO 80 machine to reduce oil consumption, remove carbonised particles and achieve healthier fried food. Pedro Da Silva, Deputy General Manager of the hotel comments: “As well as cleaner tasting food, VITO has saved us £137.50 a week on oil, reducing our costs by 55 per cent.

Best Western Old Tollgate (Sussex) They have a strong and active Green Team which promotes energy and wastage reduction, recycling wherever possible and a “green” environment within the hotel and grounds, and is committed to raising awareness of the issues involved.

One Aldwych (London) Children with Cancer affiliation and presentations raised £35,000 for children with cancer, from table donations, staff sales, a Bake challenge and sponsorship for the chef running the London marathon. A team of One Aldwych volunteers representing children with cancer attended on the day to raise awareness.

Considerate Green Team of the Year (sponsored by Berendsen)

Bryn Elltyd eco Guesthouse (Wales) Becoming Carbon Zero. All energy inputs are from renewable energy sources, hence no effect on climate change. Revamping the kitchen was the final piece of this intergrated jigsaw. The old gas cooker was recycled free to a green charity, in line with the hotel’s ethos. The controllable induction replacement cooker actually turns off when a pan is lifted wasting less energy. This makes the kitchen colder. insulation on the ceiling and closed cell foam insulation on walls at back of units. Having chased yet more draughts down in the kitchen timber panelling, they are now back to the warm kitchen they had before yet are creating less heat.

Park Plaza Riverbank (London) With a monthly average of 21,331 kg recycled products in 2013 totalling a staggering 255966 kg , the hotel saved : 544 Trees from recycled cardboard; approximately 1,025 cubic metres of landfill ; A staggering reduction in the cost of waste removal of just over £32,000 over the course of the year – clearly illustrating a vital ROI on the investment in the Waste2Water machine and bottle crusher.

Haymarket Hotel (London) The whole team is involved in a “car race” once a year at the summer staff party which ties in with the environmental week across the group. Each property has to build a vehicle which is completely recycled and runs without adding to the carbon footprint.

hotel staff organising fund raising events. The housekeeping team raised funds for the West London Mission charity for the Homeless by sleeping rough & serving breakfast for the homeless throughout the year.

Landmark London Annual green calendar motivates and encourages housekeeping staff to organise green activities throughout the year. The most successful in 2013 was “World Cancer Day” when with the help from Uniform Room team they made homemade ribbons and organised a stall in the staff restaurant. We raised money for Cancer Research UK.

Good Egg Award (sponsored by Con-Serve) It will be announced at the award lunch and will be awarded to a person who has shown them-selves to be a real patron of sustainability and truly Considerate, joining past winners Raymond Blanc, Vanessa Scott, Gary Lohan and Richard Slade.
