Trends that drive us: For those of you who attended our Award Ceremony on the 3rd of July, you will remember the impacting words of Simon King’s speech ‘If we loose all the world’s insects human mankind will only be able to survive a max of 50 years as a race. Whereas if human mankind ceases to exist it will have no impact on the insects whatsoever!’ I think in a nutshell, that sums up pretty poignantly how much we humans depend on the wildlife for our mere existence. And wildlife will only persist if we make sure we maintain a maximum level of biodiversity. We all know how each environmental system is linked with a gazillion others, therefore you loose one and it tips the entire balance of the natural world over. So what can we as hoteliers do? It is a challenge particularly for those running a city hotel as these issues seem too far off our daily radar and are not one of our obvious challenges. However, we have enormous power to change things by simply looking into our purchasing policies and choices. Increasingly more companies have subscribed to knowing their life cycles as well as externalities, respecting the environment, supporting biodiversity and wildlife in their production or choice of raw materials. One of the main issues, which has hit the headlines more and more over the last year is the use of Palm Oil in an increasing number of products. Palm Oil plantations worldwide, but mainly in South East Asia, have been causing an even more rapid deforestation of rain forests and a huge loss of living space for thousands of species.

We have included some of the latest guidelines of the Consumer Goods Forum on purchasing in order to protect those endangered areas in this newsletter. For those hotels in the countryside (and in the middle of oceans), well, you are probably in the know already and support your local farmers wherever you can, as well as show guests how to engage with nature again. Below we have highlighted some of the stories which have struck a specific chord with us. We hope the information in this newsletter will help you make the right choices when it comes to purchasing and informing your guests on the issue. Happy Reading!

CONSIDERATE HOTELS Stories that impress us

Fregate Island- Oetker Collection, Seychelles International Considerate Hotel 2015 – Their Story Fregate Island Private has two full-time biologists on the Island to manage ecology, conservation and landscaping on the Island. We also have 4 volunteers to aid with our conservation projects.

They have a number of on-going conservation projects on the Island. The critically endangered Hawksbill turtle nests on the Island during the months of October to April. This is a busy time for the conservation team who conduct twice daily walks around the Island's 7 beaches to monitor Fregate's population of Hawkbill turtles. This project has been of particular interest amongst our guests and the hotel invite the guests to participate under guidance. The Island has a number of endemic and endangered birds of which the Magpie Robin is one of Fregate proudest conservation stories. At one stage considered one of the rarest birds in the world with a population of just 12 individuals on Fregate Island alone, the population now stands at 140+ individuals on Fregate and has been successfully translocated to 4 other islands in the Seychelles. The team continues to monitor the Magpie Robin on the Island and conduct an annual population census, territory mapping and ringing of new birds. This year our most exciting project on Fregate is the initiation of a marine conservation programme and a sustainable fishing policy. The resort has also joined the Seychelles Billfish Society and have tagged and released a number of billfish over the last few months. We offer a sustainable fish card to guest prior to fishing trips with local fisherman and explain the reasons why they don’t take unsustainable fish such as billfish and sharks on FIP. Nature walks provided by the conservation team actively educate guests about the ecological, geological and anthropological histories of not only FIP but for the Seychelles as a whole, and the importance of conservation initiatives. The island ecologists have published a book about FIP’s flora and fauna which can be purchased by guests in our boutique. Guests are welcome and encouraged to help search for tiny sea turtle hatchlings emerging from their nests or to check nest boxes for eggs or chicks. Habitat restoration is vital in terms of maintaining native biodiversity on Fregate and is a major on going project for the conservation team with the aim of becoming a Marine Protected Area. FIP markets itself as a ‘Jewel of Conservation’ therefore protection of the Islands flora and fauna is of the utmost importance. Fregate Island Private hosts the second largest population ofAldabra Giant Tortoise in the world, with an estimated population of over 2,200 specimens. Donations from hotel guests have directly contributed to the increased population of the Giant Aldabra tortoise.

Other actions taken at some of our member hotels The Rosewood London Rosewood London prepares all of its pastries and breads in house. With regard to jams and preservatives, Rosewood London doesn't currently have a specific policy in place, but tries to minimise the usage of refined white sugars and avoids the usage of synthetic preservatives and ingredients. Doing their part towards restoring and enhancing urban biodiversity and preserving the wellbeing of the local bee population, the Rosewood further addressed the issue of food security via the production of honey. Rosewood London recently added a bee habitat to the rooftop garden which will produce local honey to be used in the hotel kitchen and the Slow Food & Living Market. Rosewood London has also a newly created organic rooftop garden which grows produce that is then sold at the Slow Food & Living Market as well as used in the hotel kitchen. Clearly a city hotel that thinks country.

The Langham, London They have joined the Fish City Pledge as well as subscribed to "Sustainable Fish and Meat Resourcing” as a policy which is included in the hotels CSR Policy Statement. The "Sustainable Fish and Meat Resourcing Statement" is also mentioned on menus and printed in room directories. It is also displayed in their staff canteen.

Battlesteads Hotel - Northumbria Wildlife in Northumbria

The walled garden visible from the conservatory is specially planted to encourage wildlife, the boiler house has a bat box and an owl box, and it has lots of bird-feeders to encourage the many smaller species in the area. Binoculars are available in the conservatory to help guests with identification. Badgers, foxes, herons and red squirrels (Battlesteads is a member of the 'Save Our Squirrels' scheme) are frequently reported and a family of otters can be seen in the early morning on the river Tyne next to the village bridge. In spring you can view displays of wild garlic and the most amazing vistas of bluebells – Guests are encouraged to report any interesting sightings in Battlesteads's guest log.

CDP (Formerly Carbon Disclosure Project) ‘Deforestation-free Supply Chains’

CDP's forests program acts on behalf of 298 signatory investors with US$19 trillion in assets who wish to understand how companies are addressing their exposure to deforestation risks. In 2015, CDP’s Forests Information Request was sent to over 700 of the world’s largest companies that have operational or supply chain risks related to the four agricultural commodities responsible for most deforestation: timber products, palm oil, soy and cattle products. The questionnaire reflects the concerns of investors, as well as other stakeholders, including: Are any of your operations or critical suppliers exposed to deforestation risks – regulatory, operational or reputational? What systems do you have in place to manage your supply chain and to ensure traceability of products?

How confident are you that you will have access to the quantity and quality of commodities required to operate now and in the future? Responding to this information request or self-selecting to submit a response communicates this information to key stakeholders and can add value to your business. For more information, please visit: https://www.cdp.net/enUS/Programmes/Pages/forests.aspx. In order to address the barriers to action on deforestation-free supply chains that companies disclose to CDP’s forests program, CDP recommends: Strong action at an international level through partnerships between governments; Clear and consistent policy at a national level; and Use business levers to harness private sector investment
and direct it towards climate finance.
