Tuesday 19th November 2013 The Savoy is crowned Green Hotel of Europe, CH and Veolia combine to produce a successful workshop, and it’s a hard wind that wreaks havoc in the Philippines
The Savoy Storms To A European Award It’s been quite a year for the Savoy. They have burst through the award barrier and collected a plethora of trophies. We heartily congratulate them on their latest achievement – The Green Hotel of the Year in the European Hospitality Awards. They are the shining example of luxury brand hotel shouting their sustainable ethos from the rooftops, destroying the myth that luxury and sustainability constitutes an oxymoron. To Debra Patterson and her team of Greens, we are very proud to have you as members.

The First Of Many
If you were lucky enough to attend the workshop last Thursday you don’t need me to tell you it was a great success. Much was learnt, and it was most informative to see what happens to hotel waste after it leaves a hotel’s care. Do you labour under the impression everything is just dandy? Well, here’s what happened... Veolia’s Southwark Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) hosted the Veolia/CH Workshop on “Waste Management Strategies For Hoteliers”. The event was a proof to the fact that the hospitality business is proactive, considerate and open for industry collaboration. Veolia’s team of professionals gave the participants an insight to Food Waste Technology whereas Considerate Hoteliers focused the lens to the tools needed to build a waste strategy and best practices. Clare Wright, Director of Procurement, Environment and Sustainability for the Lancaster London, a Considerate Hotelier Award Winner, delivered yet another brilliant presentation and guided the participants through the long-term sustainability journey of the hotel. A very intriguing part of the half-day event was the Southwark IWMF tour. It allowed the attendees to observe mechanical and biological treatment of waste and witness how Veolia meet their objective: “Capture any recyclables in the residual waste and produce secondary fuels which can replace wood and coal”. No doubt, the workshop was a success. The good news - it was just the first of many to come. All the presentations from the day have been uploaded onto our website in the Members Area under CH Talks. Stay tuned!
Can Small Really Be Beautiful? Imagine sleeping inside a sculpture, right in the heart of a busy city square. Naturally, said sculpture would have an inviting interior and come with an entrance, bedroom, and bathroom. Sounds like heaven – or a far-fetched dream? Recently, Portuguese sculptor and industrial designer Gabriela Gomes created all this and more with her experimental housing project Shelter ByGG. A cross between architecture, design, and sculpture, the bright red object resembles a sculpture at first glance, but closer inspection reveals it to be a bona fide living space. Built from nonpolluting, recycled materials and drawing energy from attached solar panels, the self-contained, sustainable unit can be installed file:///C:/Users/usuario/Desktop/Considerate Hoteliers/The First Of Many_Newsletter 19.11.13.htm

pretty much anywhere. Like a tiny travelling cocoon, Shelter ByGG treats visitors to an innovative and unexpected take on everyday accommodation and questions the prevalent and accepted dichotomy of public and private or interior and exterior.
News From The Shires The Alexandra Hotel in Lyme Regis suggests that life outside the metropolitan areas is far from mundane when it comes to being considerate. Tom McGuire of The Alexandra Hotel relates: "Our electric car charging station has proven popular with people passing through Lyme and staying. We also have an active vegetable garden thanks to our gardener Richard which supplies a lot of our fresh fruit, vegetables and green salads. This saves on packaging and transport from suppliers. Our guests are encouraged to recycle their rubbish items, and often hand items into reception or housekeeping to be recycled. We get good feedback and ideas from our guests on how to maintain our green footprint or improve it through guest feedback forms on departure. The obvious light sensors that switch on when guests walk past and eco water systems for controlling water for flushing toilets all add an interest factor, and are noticed and commented on."
The Winds Appears To Blow Hardest In The Far East We have all been devastated by the appalling damage and loss of life that has happened in the Philippines. The cry inevitably goes up – climate change/global warming. Research shows that cyclonic activity has not changed much in living memory and there would appear to be no worse storms now than in times gone by. What is certain is that as the seas have warmed up, water levels have risen so therefore the waves are bigger and more damaging as a result. There is a need to build stronger infrastructure and buildings, ones that can withstand what nature chooses to throw at us. The storms will continue to blow, but we can lessen their impact by creating richer economies who can in turn build stronger foundations to their buildings and their communities. It’s a long journey and in the meantime we must do what we can to help the people of the Philippines.
