Volterra, ein Juwel der etruskischen (Stadtmauer mit Stadttor, Gräber), römischen (das Theater) und mittelalterlichen (Marktplatz mit dem ältesten Rathaus der Toskana und den Wohntürmen) Kunst bis zur Renaissance, beherrscht auf einem 550 m hohen Hügel liegend das ganze Cecinatal bis zum Meer. Il territorio dell’Alta Val di Cecina occupa la parte meridionale della provincia di Pisa. Gli antichi insediamenti punteggiano il paesaggio: le fortificazioni sui rilievi più elevati, i borghi, le pievi, le abitazioni rurali. I beni archeologici e artistici trovano invece nella città d’arte di Volterra l’indiscusso centro. Questo ricchissimo patrimonio è immerso in un paesaggio assai vario. Da quello tipico della campagna toscana, con filari di cipressi, oliveti e vigneti, alle dolci colline argillose, con i colori mutevoli delle stagioni, qua e là contrassegnate da pendici denudate (i calanchi e le biancane). Oltre a questi le vastissime aree boscate, gli estesi affioramenti rocciosi, il peculiare paesaggio dell’area geotermica, e gli ambienti montani delle alture più elevate, alle sorgenti del fiume Cecina. All’interno di questo contesto è presente una fitta rete di sentieri, nelle aree di Berignone e Monterufoli, che consentono di scoprire zone incontaminate di particolare suggestione.

The Upper Cecina Valley lies in the south  of the Province of Pisa. The unspoilt countryside and scenic landscape bewrays the presence of ancient settlements, castles, villages, churches and farm houses crowned majestically by the historical city of Volterra. The ephemeral colours of this land of contrasts transform with the changing of the seasons. Gently rolling clay hills, avenues lined with cypress trees, olive groves and vines of true Tuscan flavour are abruptly defined by barren, deep clay walled chasms, gullies and ravines. Large areas of forest and woodland such as Berignone and Monterufoli, thriving with animal and plant life, cherish a dense network of enchanting foot paths. Then of course there is the anomalous landscape of the Geothermal area with its steaming jets and fumaroles. One of the most interesting regions of Tuscany its charm certainly lies in its natural beauty and variable features.

Im südlichen Teil der Provinz von Pisa liegt das Gebiet des Oberen Cecinatales. Gut erhaltene antike Siedlungen durchsetzen die Landschaft: befestigte Städte auf den höchsten Erhebungen, Borghi, Kirchen und Bauernhäuser. Die archeologischen und artistischen Schätze befinden sich im unbestrittenen Mittelpunkt, der Kunststadt Volterra. Die Umgebung von Volterra ist sehr abwechslungsreich, von der typischen toskanischen Landschaft mit den Zypressenreihen, den Olivenhainen und den Weinbergen bis zu den kargen Landschaften mit den Weizenfeldern, den Schafweiden und dem Erosionsgebiet vor Volterra (le Balze) mit seinen Schluchten. Es gibt ausgedehnte Wälder, umfangreiche Felsenerhöhungen, wo der Fluß Cecina entspringt, mit einer Fauna von grossem Interesse. Und natürlich die geothermische Landschaft mit endlosen silbernen Pipelineschlangen und den Dampffontänen. Die Naturschutzgebiete von Berignone und Monterufoli laden mit ausgeschilderten Wanderwegen zur Entdeckung der noch ursprünglichen Natur ein.

Castelnuovo Val di Cecina

Castelnuovo Val di Cecina, circondato da folti boschi di castagno, è situato in posizione panoramica a 576 m s.l.m., sullo spartiacque tra la Valle del Cecina e quella del Cornia. Il suggestivo borgo medievale a forma di pigna, è arroccato sulla collina e conserva intatto l’antico impianto urbanistico dominato dalla chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore che sorge dove si ergeva l’antico castello. Il territorio è caratterizzato, oltre che da importanti fenomeni di natura endogena, anche dalla presenza di borghi di grande interesse, primo fra tutti Montecastelli, in posizione strategica sulla Valle del Pavone con la possente struttura della torre medievale e la chiesa romanica dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo. Sasso Pisano, vicino al grazioso borgo della Leccia, presenta, oltre al piccolo centro storico, i resti di un antico impianto termale etrusco e i suggestivi fenomeni naturali delle putizze e delle fumarole che conferiscono al paesaggio un aspetto fantastico e misterioso.

Castelnuovo Val di Cecina, situated on a ridge, 576 metres above sea level between the Cecina and Cornia Valley, affords a magnificent view of the surrounding area. This charming village shaded by chestnut groves and assuming the form of a pine cone still retains its Medieval structure crowned by the Church of Our Holy Saviour built on the site where a castle once stood. In the vicinity there are some interesting villages to visit such as Montecastelli with its Medieval tower and Romanesque church of St. Philip and St. James looking out over the Valle del Pavone. Sasso Pisano, not far from the charming village of Leccia, not only conserves an interesting historical centre but the vestige of an Etruscan Spa, the natural phenomenon of the fumaroles and steaming vents which endows the landscape with a mysterious air.

Castelnuovo Val di Cecina befindet sich, umgeben von dichten Kastanienwäldern, auf einer Wasserscheide in 576 m Höhe, mit herrlicher Aussicht auf das Cecinaund Corniatal. Seine mittelalterliche Struktur, mit Anordnung der Häuser um die dominierende Kirche des Heiligen Erlösers, errichtet anstelle einer antiken Burg, wurde erhalten. Die Umgebung wird charakterisiert durch die Ruinen eines etruskischen Thermalbades und die interessanten geothermischen Vorkommen, wie die “fumarole” (Dampffontänen) und die “putizze” (Schwefelgestank), die vor allem in der Nähe des antiken Borgo Sasso Pisano der Landschaft einen fantastischen und misteriösen Anstrich geben und durch viele ursprüngliche “Borghi”, vor allen dem von Montecastelli, der sich in einer strategischen Lage über dem Pavonetal befindet und von der mächtigen Struktur eines mittelalterlichen Turmes und der römischen Kirche der Heiligen Filippo und Giacomo beherrscht wird.

Montecatini Val di Cecina

Una possente torre, antica dimora della famiglia Belforti, domina Montecatini Val di Cecina e il territorio circostante. Il sottostante abitato presenta i caratteri tipici del centro medievale costruito intorno agli edifici rappresentativi del potere politico e religioso: la trecentesca chiesa di San Biagio e il Palazzo Pretorio che ospita la parte documentaria del Museo delle Miniere a cui si accompagna, fuori del paese, l’antico impianto minerario oggi visitabile. Il paesaggio collinare che si estende attorno a Montecatini offre scorci di rara bellezza, con boschi ricchi di selvaggina e insediamenti urbani di grande fascino. Tra questi il Castello di Querceto, circondato da una suggestiva cornice di boschi, mostra i tratti distintivi del borgo medievale arroccato attorno alla pieve di S. Giovanni. Anche l’abitato della Sassa, posto su un colle che domina il paesaggio da Volterra fino al mare, conserva integra l’antica struttura raccolta intorno alla torre e alla chiesa di S. Martino. Particolarmente interessanti, infine, gli insediamenti di Casaglia, Gello, Buriano, Miemo e le antiche miniere di rame situate in prossimità dell’abitato di Montecatini.

An imposing tower, once the residence of the Belforti family, looms  over the Medieval village of Montecatini Val di Cecina and the surrounding countryside. The town below has the traditional characteristics of a medieval centre built up around the most important political and religious buildings: the 14th century Church of San Biagio and the Pretorio Palace. The latter houses the documentary section of the Mine Museum, which is joined by the ancient mine structures just outside of town that are now open to visitors. This is a magnificently rugged, hilly, woodland area thriving with animal and plant life scattered with enchanting villages such as Casaglia, Buriano, Miemo and Gello, Castello di Querceto with its Church of Saint Giovanni. La Sassa with its panoramic view of Volterra and the sea is surmounted by a tower and the church of St. Martino. At Montecatini there are also the disused copper mines first worked by the Etruscans.

Montecatini Val di Cecina befindet sich auf einer 416 m hohen Anhöhe mit einer herrlichen Aussicht auf Volterra und das Cecinatal und wird von dem wuchtigen und viereckigen Turm Belforti aus dem 12. Jh. beherrscht. Der darunterliegende Ort weist die typischen Merkmale eines mittelalterlichen Dorfkerns auf, das um die, die politische und religiöse Macht vertretenden Gebäude errichtet wurde: der aus dem 14. Jhdt. stammenden Sankt Blasius Kirche und dem Amtgerichtsgebäude, welches den Dokumentarteil des Bergwerksmuseums birgt, zu dem auch die außerhalb des Dorfes gelegene und zu besichtigende, einstige Bergwerksanlage gehört. Die Hügellandschaft um Montecatini bietet Augenblicke von seltener Schönheit, ausgedehnte und ursprüngliche Wälder mit reichem Wildleben und faszinierende Dörfer. Eines davon ist das Castello di Querceto, ein romantischer Borgo, auf einer Erhöhung um die schöne Kirche von S. Giovanni gebaut und von Wäldern eingerahmt. Auch der Borgo La Sassa, wie ein Adlernest an einen Felsen geklebt, mit einer Aussicht vom Meer bis Volterra, konserviert seine mittelalterliche Struktur mit der Ansiedlung um den Turm und die Kirche von S. Martino. Von besonderem Interesse sind auch die Weiler von Casaglia, Gello, Buriano, Miemo und die antike Kupfermine von Montecatini, die sich am Rande des Dorfes in einer schönen Aussichtslage befindet.

Monteverdi Marittimo

Il comune di Monteverdi M.mo si trova a 365 m sul livello del mare, immerso in ampi boschi con vegetazione tipica della macchia mediterranea. La pianura dove si affaccia era una provincia romana denominata Giulia ossequiosa. Per le origini dei due borghi di Monteverdi e Canneto, invece, bisogna parlare del monastero benedettino di San Pietro in Palazzuolo, fondato da Walfredo, nobile longobardo, probabile capostipite della famiglia della Gherardesca. Il primo insediamento conosciuto è del 754 nella zona denominata Badiavecchia, subito fuori dall’attuale centro abitato, poi trasferito dal 1100 al 1200 su un colle dove ancora oggi sono visibili i resti dell’abbazia. All’interno del centro storico di Monteverdi ci sono due edifici religiosi: la Chiesa di Sant’Andrea con all’interno la Madonna col Bambino di F. Valdambrino e la cappella del Santissimo Sacramento a fianco della chiesa con all’interno Il Cristo Nero, un crocifisso ligneo del XIV-XV secolo, esposto e visibile solo ogni 3 anni. Tutto l’abitato è attraversato da Rughe, come un fitto reticolo di percorsi con piazzette e scorci veramente suggestivi. Interessante il Museo dei paesaggi, visitabile ritirando la chiave magnetica all’Ufficio informazioni, e l’Abbazia di San Pietro in Palazzolo, fuori dell’abitato di Monteverdi, con i ruderi dell’edificio religioso e gli scavi archeologici. Anche il borgo di Canneto presenta elementi di grande interesse come la cinta muraria, con il Torrione e le due porte “Porta agli archi” e “Porta alla buca”, la Chiesa di San Lorenzo e l’impianto urbanistico assai particolare.

The municipality of Monteverdi Marittimo is situated at an elevation of 365m a.s.l., surrounded by wide woodlands characterized by Mediterranean scrub. It overlooks a plain that in the past was a Roman province, called Giulia Ossequiosa (Deferential Julia). As regards the origins of the two hamlets of Monteverdi and Canneto, the Benedictine monastery of San Pietro in Palazzuolo must be mentioned. It was founded by Walfredo, a Longbard nobleman, who is likely to be the forefather of the della Gherardesca family. The first recorded settlement dates back to 724 AD in the area called Badiavecchia, just outside the urban centre, then between 1100 and 1200 it was transferred over a hill were the ruins of the abbey are still visible today. In the town centre of Monteverdi there are two religious buildings: the church of S. Andrea housing a Madonna with the Baby by F. Valdambrino, and the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament next to the church housing a Cristo Nero (Black Christ), a wooden crucifix of the 14th15th centuries, that is only shown to visitors every three years. The whole urban centre is crossed by “Rughe” (wrinkles), a tight network of alleyways with small squares and charming views. Worth visiting is the interesting Landscapes Museum , which can be accessed by withdrawing the magnetic key from the Information Office, and the Abbey of San Pietro in Palazzuolo, outside the town of Monteverdi, with the ruins of the religious building and the archaeological excavations. The village of Canneto also has elements of great interest such as the ramparts, with an imposing watch tower and two gates “Porta agli archi” and “Porta alla buca”, the Church of San Lorenzo and itsunique urban layout.

Die Gemeinde Monteverdi M.mo liegt auf 365 m über dem Meeresspiegel, versunken in weiträumigen Wäldern der typisch mediterranen Macchia. Das Flachland, das sich von hier aus ausbreitet, war früher eine römische Provinz, die „Giulia, die Unterwürfige“ hieß. Um die Ursprünge der beiden Orte Monteverdi und Canneto herauszufinden, müssen wir über das Benediktdinerkloster San Pietro in Palazzuolo sprechen, dass von Walfredo gegründet wurde, ein adeliger Langobarde, der wahrscheinlich der Stammvater der Gherardesca Familie war. Die erste Ansiedlung geht auf das Jahr 754 zurück, die in der Gegend von Badiavecchia, gleich außerhalb des jetzigen Stadtzentrums gegründet wurde. Zwischen 1100 und 1200 wurde dieses Siedlung auf einen Hügel versetzt wurde, wo noch heute die Überreste der Abtei zu besichtigen sind. In der Altstadt von Monteverdi befinden sich zwei religiöse Gebäude: die Kirche von Sant’Andrea wo die Maria mit Kind von F.Valdambrino ausgestellt ist und die Kapelle des Santissimo Sacramento gleich neben der Kirche, mit dem schwarzen Christus, ein hölzernes Kruzifix aus dem 14./15. Jahrhunderten, welches nur alle 3 Jahre besichtigt werden kann. Durch den suggestiven Ortskern laufen die sogenannten „Rughe“ (Falten), viele enge Gassen mit kleinen Plätzen und Abkuerzungen. Interessant sind das Landschaftsmuseum “Museo dei paesaggi”, dessen Magnetschlüssel beim Informationsbüro abgeholt werden kann und die ausserhalb des Dorfes Monteverdi gelegene Abtei San Pietro in Palazzuoli mit Ruinen des Gotteshauses sowie archeologischen Ausgrabungen. Auch das Dorf Canneto hat Interessantes zu bieten: die Befestigungsmauer mit Turm und den zwei Toren “Porta agli archi” und “Porta alla buca”, die Kirche San Lorenzo und eine besondere städtebauliche Dorfstruktur.

Pomarance

Sulla direttrice che da Volterra porta a Massa M.ma e al mare, tra le colline verdeggianti solcate dal fiume Cecina, si erge Pomarance. Comune geotermico per eccellenza, esso coniuga sul proprio territorio suggestivi elementi naturalistici e storici con paesaggi marcati dallo sfruttamento del vapore endogeno. Stimolanti ed eterogenei gli itinerari proposti al turista: gli antichi borghi medievali arroccati sui colli aspri e boscosi tra i quali Micciano, Libbiano, Montegemoli, Serrazzano, Lustignano, Montecerboli. San Dalmazio, i ruderi della Pieve romanico-normanna e della Rocca di Sillano, i soffioni boraciferi e il museo della geotermia di Larderello. Interessante si rivelerà pure la visita al centro urbano di Pomarance con la chiesa Parrocchiale impreziosita dai dipinti di Cristofano Roncalli e Nicolò Cercignani, la Piazza della Pretura e i bei palazzi ottocenteschi di Via Roncalli tra i quali emerge Casa Bicocchi, residenza borghese del XIX sec. Da non perdere, la seconda domenica di settembre, il Palio delle Contrade, una disfida di rappresentazioni teatrali di grande suggestione.

Along the winding road through green hilly pasture land nurtured by the  Cecina River from Volterra to Massa Marittima lies the hilltop town of Pomarance. This is the Geothermic area, a blend of natural beauty, ancient monuments and a network of steam jets and fumaroles currently exploited for the production of electricity. This territory offers many enchanting routes to strategically positioned Medieval villages crowning the surrounding woodlands such as Micciano, Libbiano, Montegemoli, Serrazzano, Montecerboli, Lustignano and San Dalmazio. Well worth the effort is a visit to the ruins of the Romanesque Norman Church, the Rocca di Sillano and the Geothermic Museum in Larderello. The urban centre of Pomarance is well worth a visit, especially the Parish church which houses the paintings of Cristofano Roncalli and Nicolò Cercignani, La Piazza della Pretura and the splendid nineteenth century palaces in Via Roncalli including “Casa Bicocchi”. Not to be missed, on the second Sunday of September, is the Palio delle Contrade, a challenge of highly suggestive theatrical performances.

Auf dem Weg von Volterra nach Massa Marittima, in einer grünen Hügellandschaft, die vom Fluss Cecina durchquert wird, erhebt sich Pomarance. Die geothermische Gemeinde par excellence, auf dessen Gebiet sich eindrucksvolle landschaftliche und historische Elemente vereinigen und deren Landschaft von der Ausnutzung der heissen Dämpfe geprägt ist. Die Sehenswürdigkeiten für den Besucher sind interessant und vielseitig: die mittelalterlichen “Borghi” auf schroffen und bewaldeten Hügeln, wie Micciano, Libbiano, Montegemoli, Serrazzano, Lustignano, Montecerboli und San Dalmazio, die Ruinen der römischnormannischen Kirche und die Rocca Sillano, die borsäurehaltigen “Soffioni” und das Museum von Larderello. Auch das Zentrum von Pomarance ist einen Besuch wert, sehenswert die Pfarrkirche mit Gemälden von Cristofano Roncalli und Nicolò Cercignani, die Piazza della Pretura (Amtsgerichtplatz) und die schönen Gebäude aus dem 19. Riparbella

Riparbella, antico e piccolo borgo tra le dolci colline e il profumato mare degli Etruschi, siede su un poggio immerso tra vigne e ulivi, dal quale si possono ammirare l’isola d’Elba e la Corsica. Il suo territorio riporta antiche tracce di quando importanti famiglie Etrusche si insediarono usandola come punto di riferimento per gli scambi commerciali verso il mare. Nel corso degli anni non ha perso la sua vocazione agricola ed oggi è sede di aziende vitivinicole specializzate in piccole produzioni di altissima qualità. In estate, grazie alla sua altitudine e alla brezza del mare, la temperatura resta piacevole favorendo escursioni e attività sportive. L’incredibile vastità del territorio incontaminato ha facilitato la sopravvivenza della fauna tipica locale. Cinghiali, daini, caprioli, lepri, istrici, faine, volpi e rapaci si possono scorgere facilmente sfidando i boschi nelle ore notturne. La comunità di Riparbella, molto legata alle sue radici, organizza tutti gli anni alcune sagre in cui è possibile assaggiare specialità culinarie come la “zuppa riparbellina”e “le pappardelle al cinghiale”. Ripa wine a luglio, l’Agrifiera all’inizio di agosto e la Sagra del Cinghiale a novembre, sono gli eventi più importanti del borgo.

Riparbella is an ancient hamlet nestled between gentle hills and the scented sea of the Etruscans, a charming village surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and the picturesque scenery of Corsica and the Elba Island. The territory witnesses the settlement of important Etruscan families that used the place as a reference point for their trade by sea. Riparbella still preserves its strong farming tradition and the village is today the seat of appreciated wineries which produce high quality wines. Thanks to its elevation and the gentle sea breeze, Riparbella boasts a mild weather and in summertime is an excellent place for hiking and sport activities. Its pristine forests and green areas preserve the typical local wildlife: wild pigs, roes, fallow deer, hares, porcupines, foxes, martens and birds of prey are easy to observe venturing into the woodlands at night time. The local community is closely bound to traditions and yearly organizes some of the most interesting festivals of the area where it is possible to taste the Riparbella’s thick soup, the wild pig pappardella and many other culinary delights. Worth mentioning are also the Wild Pig Festival, that takes place in November, Ripa Wine in July and Agrifiera held in the early days of August.

Der Ort birgt antike Spuren wichtiger Etruskischer Familien, die sich dort niederliessen, um ihn als Ausgangspunkt für den Meereshandel zu nutzen. Im Laufe der Jahre hat der Ort seine landwirtschaftliche Bedeutung verloren und ist heute Firmensitz von Weingütern, die auf kleine Produktionsmengen von bester Qualität spezialisiert sind. Dank seiner Höhenlage und der Brise vom Meer, bleiben die Termperaturen im Sommer angenehm und machen Lust auf Ausflüge und sportliche Betätigungen. Die unglaubliche Weite dieses unberührten Gebietes hat den Erhalt der hiesigen typischen Fauna begünstigt. Wildschweine, Damhirsche, Rehe, Hasen, Stachelschweine, Steinmader, Füchse und Raubvögel sind zu Nachtzeiten leicht in den Wäldern auszumachen. Die stark verwurzelte Dorfgemeinschaft von Riparbella organisiert jedes Jahr mehrere Feste, auf denen Sie kulinarische Spezialitäten wie die Riparbeller Suppe (zuppa riparbellina) und die Wildscheinnudeln (Pappardella al cinghiale) probieren können. Die wichtigsten Veranstaltungen sind “Ripa wine” im Juli, “l’Agrifiera” Anfang August und das Wildschweinfest im November.

½ Kohl 1 Bund Mangold Karotten Zwiebeln Tomaten Petersilie Kräuter 1 Stück Speck Kartoffel Getrocknete weisse Bohnen, am Vorabend eingeweicht

Lavare i fagioli e metterli a cuocere, separatamente dal resto, con acqua, un po’ di cipolla, uno spicchio d’aglio e un pezzetto di cotenna o prosciutto. Nel frattempo fare un soffritto a fuoco lento con rigatino e battuto di cipolla, carota, sedano. Allungare con un po’ d’acqua perché la cipolla perda l’acuto. Dopo una mezz’ora aggiungere i pomodori maturi a pezzi o i pelati e lasciar cuocere. Lavare e tagliare a pezzi sottili il cavolo, le bietole e una patata e aggiungerle al soffritto, salare, pepare e aggiungere un po’ di acqua calda. Ultimata la cottura, togliere i fagioli dal fuoco, passarne una parte e aggiungerli, con gli altri lasciati interi e non troppo scolati, alle altre verdure. Lasciar cuocere per 3-4 ore a fuoco lento. In una zuppiera alternare fette di pane toscano raffermo con il minestrone. Lasciar riposare e servire.

Pour some water to let the onion loose its strong flavour. After half an hour, add pieces or peeled ripe tomatoes and cook on a low flame. Finally wash and chop the cabbage, the bunch of chards and the potato in small pieces and add them together with salt, pepper and hot water to the pan . Once the beans are well-cooked, add some puréed and some whole beans (not too much strained) in the thick soup. Then cook for 3/4 hours. Cut some slices of stale home-made bread and put them in layers in the plates. Add the soup and let rest a bit before serving.

In der Zwischenzeit dünsten Sie auf schwacher Flamme den Speck mit den gehackten Zwiebeln, den Karotten und dem Sellerie an und gießen Sie dann ein wenig Wasser dazu, damit die Zwiebel die Schärfe verliert. Nach einer halben Stunde fügen Sie die gewürfelten reifen Tomaten hinzu und lassen alles köcheln. Zum Schluss, geben Sie den in feine Streifen bzw. in Würfel geschnittenen Kohl, Mangold und eine Kartoffel dazu, ausserdem Salz, Pfeffer und warmes Wasser und rühren Sie alles um. In der Zwischenzeit sind die Bohnen gar gekocht. Geben Sie diese zur Suppe (teils ganz, teils püriert). Lassen Sie alles ca. eine ¾ Stunde kochen. Schneiden Sie Brot vom Vortag in Scheiben, das Sie dann in die Teller legen und die Suppe darauf verteilen.

It covers 25 hectares and produces mainly Bordeaux-style organic wines such as cabernet franc, which is 100% the Cru “La Regola” awarded with the 3 glasses of Gambero Rosso. The new winery built in 2016 is an example of eco-sustainability, made with bio-building materials and powered by solar energy. ALABASTRO ALABASTER

Non si può parlare di Volterra senza pensare all’alabastro, un artigianato artistico che vanta una storia e una nobiltà di tradizioni che si respirano in ogni angolo della città. L’alabastro volterrano, costituito da solfato di calcio idrato, è scavato nelle zone limitrofe alla città e fu usato su larga scala fin dal periodo etrusco per la fabbricazione delle urne cinerarie conservate presso il Museo Guarnacci. Il maggiore sviluppo della manifattura degli alabastri si ebbe alla fine del settecento, con produzioni di altissimo pregio che, grazie all’intraprendenza dei “viaggiatori dell’alabastro”, raggiunsero ogni parte del mondo. La lavorazione di questa pietra, calda e luminosa, si è tramandata di padre in figlio per migliaia di anni e ancora oggi rappresenta una delle massime espressioni dell’artigianato artistico italiano.

You cannot talk about Volterra without mentioning Alabaster, an artistic handicraft that boasts a centuries-old history and a nobility of traditions that can be felt in every nook and corner of the town. It is a calcareous substance mined in the surrounding area that has been widely used for millennia since the Etruscan craftsmen carved it to obtain urns to keep the ashes of their dead, now exhibited in the Guarnacci Museum. At the end of the 18th century, after a long period during which the craft of alabaster had virtually died out, Volterra saw a new Renaissance, and workshops sprang up with a high quality production that reached every part of the world, thanks to the resourcefulness of the so-called “Alabaster travellers”. The secrets of the manufacture of this warm and luminous stone have been handed down for ages from generation to generation, and still represent one of the highest peaks of the italian artistic handicraft.

Man kann nicht über Volterra sprechen ohne das Alabasterkunsthandwerk zu erwähnen, das sich bis auf die Etrusker zurückverfolgen läßt, mit noblen Traditionen, die man in jedem Winkel Volterras fühlt. Der Alabaster von Volterra besteht aus einem Sulfat des Kalziumhydrats, wird in der Umgebung der Stadt abgebaut und wurde von den Etruskern in großem Ausmaß zur Herstellung ihrer Ascheurnen verwendet; viele sind im Museum Guarnacci ausgestellt. Das Handwerk erfuhr Ende des 18. Jh. einen Aufschwung, mit der Herstellung von Gegenständen auf hohem künstlerischem Niveau und einem weltweiten Verkauf durch das Engagement der “Alabaster-Reisenden”. Die Verarbeitung dieses warmen und durchscheinenden Steines wurde über Jahrtausende vom Vater an den Sohn weitergegeben und ist auch heute noch eine der wichtigsten Ausdrücke des italienischen Kunsthandwerks.
