The Many Benefits of Telematics
Before you put your new auction purchases in the dirt, learn how to harness the power of telematics from this heavy diesel mechanic and instructor. From predictive maintenance for your rental fleet to top efficiency and cost savings for your customers, telematics was once best known for providing theft protection — but today, the technology packs a ton of value.
By Cody Bork SPECIAL TO CEG
In the world of heavy construction, production and efficiency are key. The invention of telematics technology has brought in a new era, revolutionizing how heavy construction equipment is managed and utilized.
Telematics, a combination of telecommunications and information, enables the remote monitoring and management of machinery. It began mainly with automotive applications, and its integration into heavy construction equipment has brought in a lot of benefits, ranging from enhanced productivity to improved safety standards.
What is telematics and how can it benefit your business?
Telematics is live and stored data on a piece of equipment. For many people they only touch the tip of the iceberg on what some of these systems are capable of. A machine with telematics is basically hooked up to a cloud and it stores information. You can be hundreds of miles away and still look at where the machine is or if it has a fault code come up.
This can be very advantageous for either contractor or dealer rental fleets. If all the machines are hooked up to your telematic system, you can always view where they are, how many hours are being put on them, and if they even need a service. This takes a lot of guess work out of the game on planning services for equipment. Instead of having to take a
trip to the machine or calling the customer, you can view the hours from an app on your smart phone.
Telematics also gives construction companies the power to maximize productivity and profitability. By providing insights into equipment usage and performance, telematics systems enable managers to identify inefficiencies and streamline processes. For example, data on fuel consumption can help identify equipment that is operating inefficiently — a piece of equipment that is idling for extended amounts of time is both costing money and not producing.
Additionally, telematics can track equipment averages, such as how much fuel that machine has used in that season. This information can be helpful in putting a price on the cost of operating every machine that you have.
No Surprises
Maintenance is a critical aspect of heavy construction equipment management, as breakdowns can result in costly downtime and project delays. Telematics facilitates proactive maintenance by providing real-time diagnostics and predictions.
Through continuous monitoring of equipment health indicators such as engine temperature, oil pressure, and hydraulic system performance, telematics systems can anticipate potential failures and alert maintenance personnel before they occur.
Some telematics systems go as far as self-diagnosing and checking the local dealership’s parts inventory for the parts needed for the repair. This proactive approach to maintenance not only minimizes downtime but also extends the lifespan of equipment, ultimately reducing operational costs.
Theft protection is another talking point that is brought up with telematics. Equipment is a large investment, and theft or someone playing with them at night can be a big concern. With telematics, you can get real-time alerts when a machine is turned on. Also, since you always have a GPS location on that machine, if it were to be stolen, you can see where it is. I am not saying a lot of people are going to be able to simply load and steal a large frame excavator, but it may be a big concern for companies with mini excavators and skid steers.
Profitability Perspective
On the other side of the equation, telematics and GPS systems can greatly increase profitability on the job site while machines are working. Getting plans made and put into a GPS grading system can save a company a lot of money.
I had the opportunity to go with a customer to look at a job site and dig further into the process of making a bid on a state project. He had spent a lot of time and money in the front end by taking core samples of the dirt at the site, evaluating what could be reused and what would need to be trucked in. Just taking those core samples saved him from hauling roughly 50 loads of fill dirt in.
On top of that, he had his GPS system freshly calibrated in his grader and dozer for this particular job. Doing this helped him stay almost perfectly on grade and it almost perfectly accounted for the compaction. It was crazy to see all the pieces come together on the final project and how he was able to bid the job quite a bit cheaper than other companies and still remain very profitable. Most of this was due to the GPS system and core samples of the job. For your equipment customer, this could be the difference between winning a bid on a job or not.
Increasingly widespread, telematics technology is a gamechanger in the world of heavy construction equipment, offering a lot of benefits that can enhance efficiency, productivity, and cost savings while improving safety. By providing realtime monitoring and management capabilities, telematics can help companies optimize their operations, minimize downtime, and maximize profitability.

Looking Back at Strong Start to Florida Auctions in 2024
The crowds grew larger as the big iron began to be auctioned at the Lyon sale.
Aerial lifts, conveyors and trailers were among the items being auctioned at Yoder & Frey’s 50th Florida auction.
Auctioneers started out strong in 2024 during the annual Florida auctions.
Returning to Bushnell, Fla., for its 31st annual auction, Alex Lyon & Son did not disappoint. The 10-day sale was held Feb. 3 to 12, 2024, at the company’s facility at 716 County Rd. 475. Customers from around the world traveled to Florida for the opportunity to bid onsite live, while those who couldn’t make the trip were able to bid online. Four of the 10 days featured timed auctions.
To celebrate its 50th year as “The Original Florida Auction,” Yoder & Frey added an extra day to its annual event, held Feb. 14 to 17, 2024. Originally scheduled as a three-day event, the number of consignments of high-quality equipment swelled to more than 5,000 lots.
Jeff Martin Auctioneers held its annual Florida Auctions from Feb. 12 to 15, 2024, in Kissimmee, Fla.
The four-day sale featured a wide array of equipment items, including paving equipment, multi-terrain loaders, earthmoving equipment, commercial trucks, generators, excavator attachments and more.
RB Global Inc. announced that Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers sold more than 16,500 equipment items, trucks and vehicles at its Feb. 19 to 23, 2024, premier global auction event in Orlando, Fla., generating more than $258 million in gross transaction value (GTV).
Bryan Auction, owned by IEDA Board Member Doug Bryan, conducted the equipment auction featuring more than 400 individual lots of all IEDA-member-consigned equipment, trucks, attachments, vehicles and tools. More than 13,000 registered online bidders participated, and more than 200 people attended the family-friendly event in person.
