Six days a week, a steady stream of customers make their way to the busy parts counter inside 20-year-old Baschmann Services’ airy new store and service facility in Elma, N.Y. Service is everything to owner Peter Baschmann, who spends most of his time away from headquarters. He and his entire sales team enjoy being out on the road seeing customers in action, helping them solve problems and making new friends. Baschmann’s people often get to meet their customers right on the job whether it is paving, plowing snow, stump grinding, making aggregate or packaging fresh compost. Additionally, the company has fully equipped service vehicles available for prompt response to service needs. Baschmann Services has a commanding collection of new and used heavy equipment in its inventory (at

Baschmann Services Inc. has been in the business of sales, service and rental of heavy equipment for 20 years.

A Menu of Services Peter Baschmann estimates that 30 percent of his business is municipal and 20 percent is aggregate. The remaining 50 percent consists of customers who do a wide variety of work, including demolition and many other special application jobs. One example of this involved a small ASV skid steer that needed to be lowered 120 ft. into the ground to remove excess rock from a storm drain. “It’s always a challenge,” Baschmann said. “But it is never boring.” Baschmann Services has been around long enough to witness many changes in the industry. Changes like the transition of medium and mini-excavators being used in conjunction with rubber tracked skid steers to take the place of a traditional tractor backhoe. The excavators’ versatility combined with the tracked skid steers’ off road prowess have really started to change the industry. Baschmann entered the small- to mid-sized motorgrader market a few years ago by teaming up with

Pavement Services Inc. (PSI). PSI graders bring many outstanding features to both buyers and renters alike. Sophisticated features, normally found only on larger graders, like Topcon Laser systems and air-conditioned cabs, help to set the PSI apart in this market. Baschmann Services has recently joined forces with Superior Broom, a strong new self-propelled broom manufacturer. “We hope that this new relationship with Superior Broom will help us to become stronger in markets that we have not excelled in,” said Baschmann. Peter began his career in 1985 as a self–employed technician working from his truck on heavy equipment – mostly doing undercarriage work on dozers. “I just loaded up my pick-up with my tools and went to work,“ he said In time he had enough work to employ two other technicians and his business ambitions bulldozed closer to the capital-intense full service dealership he leads today. “My father was always an inspiration to me and he continued on page 7

The company prides itself, after 20 years in the heavy equipment business, on doing a good job at securing financing, even in troubled economic times. Purchase and lease plans are arranged through major financing companies, local banks and manufacturer sponsored programs. “This is a capital intense business, and we pride ourselves on the funding process,” said Peter. “Because of the upstate [New York] economy, many people here tend not to buy until there is a clear need. “Service is the reason we’ve been able to grow a successful dealership,” he said. “We have many loyal customers whom we have won over with our service and product support.” Baschmann Services sells: • Kobelco America excavators, • Vibromax rollers, • Terex tractor loader backhoes and articulated trucks, • Fecon resource recovery equipment, • Bandit wood and brush chippers, • Carlton stump grinders, • Kolberg Pioneer and JCI screening and crushing equipment, • Wildcat trommel screens and Astec mobile screens, • Eager Beaver trailers, • Traileze trailers, • Kent demolition equipment, • Beuthling rollers, • Ferguson rollers, • Rockland and Geith attachments, • ASV Posi Track rubber-tracked loaders, • PSI graders, and • Superior Broom self-propelled brooms. from page 15 Hydraulics and as such, hydraulic hose, fittings and adapters, including Parker hose fittings for Kobelco excavators, are always on hand. And if customers can’t get to the company in Elma, N.Y., trained technicians in emergency hose assembly will be dispatched from Baschmann Services to meet 24-hour service needs. Peter estimates that the following items are among the most requested: Coco matting for rollers; grade 8 USS, SAE, and 10.9 metric hardware; replacement bucket teeth and side cutters; conveyor belt fasteners; rubber snow plow cutting edge (custom cut and punched to spec); and the more routine filters for air, fuel, hydraulic fluid and oil. The sale of used equipment often is as busy as new sales. The Internet has attracted more customers for specialized equipment and routine replacements. For example, a 1986 Bomag 213D 84-in. single-drum vibratory roller was recently sold to an Internet customer. The real appeal in machinery, of course, is always going to be what’s new and how it’s going to be used. As customers arrive at Baschmann’s headquarters, their eyes are immediately drawn to heavy equipment parked out front on the berm. By the front door, shiny chippers greet them. Inside are at least three to four parts people ready to take an order. Outside on the 11-acre lot are excavators, grinders, crushers, buckets, shredders and more.

Padua Ridge Partners With Baschmann Services For the past 30 years or so, trucks have been pulling in and out of what is now called Padua Ridge, a busy sand and gravel operation owned by Martin Wojcik and managed by Jered Buckley. From its original 14-acre pit, the company has nearly completed a two-year-long permitting compliance, which will allow the company to add 94 acres to its existing footprint. Padua Ridge makes four different-sized products: No. 2 stone, No. 1 stone, No. 1A stone and ice control sand. Equipment-wise Padua Ridge has already raised the bar with the purchase last fall of a Kolberg Pioneer wash plant and a Kolberg Pioneer 4250 track-mounted crusher. The sale was not a cakewalk for Baschmann Services’ Salesperson and Aggregate Specialist Mike Peters. The Pioneer technology had to go headto-head with comparable machines from competitors. Each piece of equipment was brought to the Padua operation and put through a grueling eight-hour demo. “We had all three machines put to the test,” Buckley said. The decision to buy was influenced by a few key issues outlined by Wojcik and Buckley. First was performance. In terms of tons per hour, they were basing their decision on an average of 350 tons per hour. Next, the made-in-America issue provided a tipping point. “If a machine is made overseas, that’s also where the parts are coming from,” Buckley said. Patriotism helps, but Buckley said, “parts are parts.” And because Buckley also is the chief technician at the pit, he puts a lot of stock in parts availability. “One of our biggest decisions to go with Baschmann [Services], the Pioneer dealer in our geographic area,” said Buckley, “is the service issue. The Pioneer is very easy to maintain and easy to get to. We do all our maintenance ourselves.” The new equipment represents a more than $400,000 investment for the wash plant and five conveyors, and approximately $480,000 for the crusher. “Getting things set up for the type of material you are running takes time,’’ said Buckley. “And the Baschmann people were very helpful in explaining everything. Any issues we had were resolved fast.” On the crushing end, he explained, there are adjustments for rotor speeds, screen sizes, rate and other factors. Time is always money. “With the crusher we practically unloaded it off the trailer and put it to work. With the washer we assembled it ourselves to save some money.” The wash plant makes four different size products in a three-deck operation. In the course of the sale, the Padua Ridge pair of Wojcik and Buckley went to the Baschmann Services location in Elma and were impressed by what they saw there. 17

Padua Ridge considered the made-in-America issue a key factor when deciding to purchase this Pioneer FT4250CC crusher.

Common Philosophies Not too many business owners would be glad to be demoted from president to vice president in his own company, but that’s what makes Frank Sergi of Sergi Construction Inc. happy these days. His son, Frank Jr., just transitioned to the top spot after a lifetime of working his way up on the job, digging, installing, and replacing water and sewer pipes made from plastic, ductile iron and steel. “My son, Frank Jr., has been out there with me since he was 12,” said Sergi Sr. “That’s been my goal since he came into the world. This is exactly what I intended to do.” Sergi Construction headquartered in East Aurora, N.Y., answers water and sewer challenges from Watertown to Warren, Pa. “This is our 13th season,” Sergi said. “My wife, my son and I own the business.” Sergi employs approximately a dozen people. The work, mostly spent digging for pipe, is 80 percent municipal and 20 percent private. Sergi said they work through the winter when “we’re not fixing equipment.” “I never was a person who could stop,” he said. “To be successful you have to be that way.” Nine years ago Sergi made his first purchase from Baschmann Services when he bought a topsoil shredder. “I’ve known Pete for a long time because he was in the business as a mechanic,” he said. “What I like is it’s a family organization. You can relate to this guy because this is what he is all about.” The next business contact with Baschmann represented a much bigger investment. Sergi said he likes to look at new equipment when he feels that manufacturers may have an affordable machine solution that answers a “nagging problem” he faces every day. In this case it was the need for an excavator that could perform zero-degree turns. “When operating an excavator, if the counterweights turn out into traffic, you aren’t really safe without shutting down the lane of traffic,” he said. “Especially digging in the middle of the road, in order to load up the truck you have to shut down the lane, and that requires a lot of work for us and inconvenience for drivers.” The Kobelco equipment that resolved this nagging problem is what brought him back to Baschmann, where he quickly

bought two new excavators (one midsize, one large) after renting them — the Kobelco SK200 and 70SR for a total of approximately $250,000. For Sergi it’s all about performance, not just cost. Success with these two machines has lead them to purchase three more Kobelco excavators. “What I do if I see a piece of equipment I like,” he said of his usual month-long trial run prior to making big ticket pur-

from page 19 chases, “rather than demo the thing, I rent it to do the job to see what I think of it. If I like it I keep it.” The work is never as easy as it may look. Sergi said that pipe is never where he thinks it should be, even when he follows the maps. “Where you think they are, they are never going to be,” he said, still slightly amused after all these years. Electronic locators help speed up the process, but increased regulation and paperwork responding to new laws intended to protect the public from unscrupulous contractors also slow it down. “In this business, the faster you can repair and restore what you’ve done, the better your job goes. It gets you away from the nagging complaints,” he said. Restoration gets Sergi into many different machines, whether it’s an ASV with a Harley rake preparing an area for seed, or compacting base with a Kent hydraulic compactor, or patching blacktop and completing paving projects with a Baschmann supplied roller. “We work very well with Pete and his group because they run their operation the way we run ours. If there is a problem, you get into it and get over it. They are small enough for that,” Sergi said. CEG

from page 17 Aggregate equipment sales are helping steer the business in new profitable directions. “Portable equipment is very big right now,” Peters said, “because with very little set up time a producer can be ready to work in 10 minutes. With production rates as high as 400 tons an hour, every minute counts for something.” According to Peters, ”the Baschmann Services technicians go with the equipment to set up and perform training and they stay with the customer until they are operating the equipment productively.” In aggregate, the company has learned the competitive edge comes from being a partner with its customers, not just simply selling them complicated equipment. For example, one recent morning, Peters was Technician Jay Sample gets a wood chipper ready for the fall roundup of wood and brush debris that needs to be working over the phone with a customer who needs to chipped and hauled away. produce more of a smaller size product, they have a stock pile of a larger size that they could crush down to the size they need. “Now I have to find the best type and size crusher to do the job efficiently,” said Peters. In fact, Baschmann’s recently rented a pug mill that was floated to the island of Nantucket. Another pug mill project involved a Baschmann-supplied unit being used to remediate contaminated soil at an inactive military base where unexploded shells had been burned causing lead contamination in the soil. A full line of Kolberg-Pioneer and JCI screening and crushing equipment, along with Astec mobile screening machinery also supports the aggregate end of the business. A higher level of vibrating RPMs allows material to stratify and separate at a faster rate when compared with conventional techniques. Wildcat trommel screens for compost, topsoil and wood chips also are popular. Astec mobile screens, on tracks, add mobility on the job site. This KDS 710T model is actually the first one ever built – and Baschmann Services has it.

Where Do We Grow From Here? After 20 years in the business, Peter Baschmann said it’s never easy, but he still clearly enjoys the challenge. It gives him satisfaction to have begun with an account such as Kingsview Enterprises (then a company dedicated to paving parking lots in upstate New York) and over time help them evolve into a prosperous concrete recycler and aggregate producer. “Dick Amidon originally sold Kingsview two small Vibromax rollers for the paving business then a few trailers between 5 and 35 ton capacity from MSA and Eager Beaver,” recalled Peter. “Mike Baschmann Services has fully equipped 24-hour emergency Peters then moved them into a portable screening plant service vehicles and specializes in on-site line boring. 23
