Brick-and-mortar show attendees can find lots of equipment all located in one place that they might not readily have access to, she added. “Our company has been attending ConExpo-Con/AGG for three decades now, and plans to continue due to the amount of knowledge we gain,” said Chris Lane of Clarksburg, W.Va., pipeline contractor Ronald Lane Inc. The show “has provided us the resources needed to create greater efficiencies and synergies within our own company.” What makes periodic, equipment-showcasing events such as ConExpo a draw for customers is the chance to learn what equipment manufacturers, technology developers and service providers have been up to for the past three years, said Travis Felchlin, sales and rentals for tower crane manufacturer Linden Comansa America, Centralia, Wash. The event gives customers the opportunity to feel, see and touch the equipment they are looking for to better their businesses. “It’s good to see what modifications and adaptations have been made for previous, older equipment that customers already own,” he added, “as well as what new and upgraded equipment certain manufacturers are unveiling at the show to bring in potential buyers.” “It’s also a good opportunity for the manufactures of the equipment being displayed at the show to see what their competitors are bringing into the market and how their product stacks up to the competition,” he continued. The fact that the show is held every three years makes potential buyers “feel like a VIP when attending the show,” he added. “ConExpo is not your average equipment tradeshow that happens every year.” Team-Building Opportunity Some heavy equipment business owners and manufacturers make it a point to attend equipment shows on a regular basis because their competition is there. In addition to factfinding, team-building is a key reason others show up. Nathan Uphus, sales manager of Felling Trailers Inc., Sauk Centre, Minn., said many people put the show date on their business calendars because of the deeper connection the event creates for them with the industry. “Large-scale equipment trade shows allow manufacturers to showcase new products or features at one venue to a huge group of people,” Uphus said. “All of these consumers are in some way connected to the construction trades and are there with the main focus of seeing the latest technology that the manufacturers have to offer,” Lots of customers will buy their equip-

This year’s ConExpo 2020, which will be held in Las Vegas from March 10-14, features almost 3,000 exhibitors in 2.6 million sq. ft. of space.

“We send somewhere between 30 and 40 company representatives to Las Vegas to see what’s new and bring relevant information back to our company. It’s a great way to build our team.” Jarrad Whissell Whissell Contracting Ltd.

ment at the show and the industry learns about the purchases through both industry media and word-of-mouth, “which is great for the publicity and marketing of their companies,” said Felchlin. Jarrad Whissell of Whissell Contracting Ltd. believes attending brick-and-mortar equipment shows builds team morale among his company’s employees. “The show is a critical piece to our work-

force development efforts,” he said. “We send somewhere between 30 and 40 company representatives to Las Vegas to see what’s new and bring relevant information back to our company. It’s a great way to build our team.” In addition to being an ideal opportunity for customers to try it before they buy it, Uphus said some business owners believe their image depends on attending.

“ConExpo is such a large show, some feel that if they don’t have a product or feature that will stand out among their competitors, they’ll get lost in the shuffle.” Commitment to Quality In 2020, ConExpo co-locates with IFPE, the International Fluid Power Exhibition for the fluid power, power transmission and motion control industries. AEM is a show owner and producer of an event that garners a positive reaction across the industry every time it’s held. That’s “because it is owned by associations that are committed to making the show by the industry and for the industry,” said Wuesthoff of AEM. Thousands of heavy machinery fans from all over the world attend every three years, she said, because of the involvement of AEM members in various show management committees who have made a commitment to providing a high ROI for both attendees and show exhibitors. “The success of ConExpo is not only in its ability to deliver THE place for our industry to do business, but it keeps each generation coming back,” she added.  CEG

Operator Titans Set to Clash at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020 The championship finals are set for the Global Operator Challenge, the largest global campaign in Caterpillar history. Nine Regional Champions from around the world will compete in Las Vegas on March 10, 2020, for their quest to be named the best of the best and awarded Global Operator Challenge Champion. The finals will take place at the Cat Operator Stadium inside Caterpillar’s Booth #F4455 in the new ConExpo-Con/AGG outdoor Festival Grounds. Thousands Have Participated Caterpillar launched the Global Operator Challenge to celebrate the operators who build our world, advocate and drive awareness for the trades, and elevate solutions that address jobsite challenges. Seventy Cat dealers from 30 countries, representing 22 different languages, kicked off the program by holding local operator challenges from March through September 2019. More than 10,000 operators participated in these local events. Participants’ operating skills were put to the test through a range of machines and tasks. Operators were scored on speed, accuracy and operating best practice with penalties imposed for errors. The operator with the lowest overall time for all tasks was acknowledged as the local champion and moved onto the regional championships. Dozens Advanced to Regional Competitions The regional competition challenges, designed to test skill and precision under pressure, tested not only operators’ abilities on machines they use every day but also had them adapt their skills to equipment for which they may not be as familiar. The operator had to exhibit a broad range of talents on multiple machines, including displaying their skills with advanced machine technologies. The best local operators competed at one of three Caterpillar sites for the regional championships. North and South America regional finals were held in Clayton, N.C.; European finals in Málaga, Spain; and Asia Pacific finals in Chichibu, Japan. North and South America: • A total of 32 finalists, divided in eastern and western divisions of the United States and Canada, competed in four machine challenges in the North American regional competition during the week of Oct. 21, 2019. Alberta, Canada’s, Jaus Neigum,

Caterpillar’s Global Operator Challenge finals will take place March 10 at the Cat Operator Stadium inside Caterpillar’s Booth #F4455 in the new ConExpo-Con/AGG outdoor Festival Grounds.

representing Finning Cat, won the Western Regional finals, while Ben Sandy of North Carolina, representing Cat dealer Gregory Poole, was the Eastern Regional Champion. • The following week six local champions from South America traveled to Clayton for the regional championship on four machine challenges. Marcio dos Santos Verissimo from Brasil, representing Cat dealer Pesa, emerged as the South American Champion.

Europe: Nearly 30 operators from 15 countries faced five machine skills challenges at Caterpillar’s Málaga Demonstration and Learning Center from Oct. 7-11, 2019. After total times plus penalties were counted, the three European Regional Champions were: Ireland’s Thomas Murphy, competing through Finning Cat UK; Erik Gregoric from Slovenia, sent by Cat dealer Teknoxgroup; and Switzerland’s Bruno Grossen from Cat dealer Avesco CH. Asia Pacific: Thirty contestants from five countries — Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, China and Japan — navigated two excavator challenges for the Regional Finals at the Caterpillar Demonstration and Learning Center in Chichibu, Japan, during the week of Nov. 18, 2019. Hiroyuki Harada, representing Nippon Caterpillar, emerged as the Regional Champion from Japan. The Philippines’ Wilfren Jimenez, representing Cat dealer Monark Equipment, won the Southeast Asia

Region. The Regional Champion from China was Xu Congxin of Jiangsu, representing Cat dealer Lei Shing Hong Machinery Northeast. Global Finals First Day of ConExpo-Con/AGG The nine finalists will compete in Las Vegas inside the Cat Operator Stadium at the new outdoor Caterpillar exhibit in Festival Grounds (Exhibit #F4455) on March 10, 2020, immediately following the grand opening of ConExpo-Con/AGG. For those not attending the show, a live broadcast of the competition will be held on cat.com. There will be three final machine challenges: operating a medium hydraulic excavator using GRADE 2D, a medium wheel loader with Production Management, and a Next Generation Mini-Excavator. After completion of the skills challenges, awards will be presented for the lowest time for each individual challenge, best team performance, and announcement of the Global Operator Challenge Champion based on overall performance. Six Evolving Technologies in the Construction Industry The construction industry — a very information intensive industry — has been slow to adopt technology. Until about six or seven years ago, technology was reserved for the back office and typically used for HR, accounting, contract writing, tracking change orders, with nothing to drive the information to the people actually doing the work in the field. That changed because of several key reasons, explained Kris Lengieza, senior director, business development, at Procore, a provider of construction management software. These include: • The prevalence of mobile devices and new technologies in our personal lives and the realization that these could be used out in the field. • The growing labor shortage. • The need for the industry to be more productive. • Younger people coming into the industry with new ideas on how to do things. • The growth of technology and innovation companies. Nowadays, construction companies are welcoming and embracing innovation. As old methodologies and science converge, new technologies improve efficiency, productivity and profits, he said. By way of example, Lengieza cited the use of 360-degree cameras — also referred to as photos-

pheres — to capture and document construction progress and check for safety issues, among other uses. Webcams are being leveraged for enhanced visibility into a job site, added the 15-year veteran of construction industry. Webcams can do a time lapse of a project, track weather data, detect schedule deviations of where a project should be and where it is and more. Lengieza said drones are being used to survey construction sites and do progress tracking. Drone technology has capability to capture better, real-time necessary data in much less time than traditional methods take. A big challenge in construction is collecting structured data to be able to do analytics, he noted. Nowadays, big data, cloud computing, labor tracking, project management software, etc., can be used to help understand how projects are progressing, see what projects require immediate attention, identify more efficient ways of doing things and enable faster, better decision making. Key Technologies for the Construction Industry According to Lengieza, the following are some of the new technologies evolving for use in the construction industry. 1. Virtual reality (VR) for training: VR training simulations

replicate situational experiences that can be difficult, expensive or dangerous to deliver in real life. For example, training an apprentice iron worker how to weld is typically done with him standing on the ground. In real life, that apprentice might have to go up 30 stories, walk out on a beam, receive a piece of steel and weld it, and that is very a different situation, said Lengieza. You don’t want to expose an apprentice to that risk and danger without proper training. VR also is being used for construction machine operating training, he added. This eliminates the need to transport students to locations and equipment and reduces the chances of damaging very expensive machines. 2. Augmented Reality (AR): This is taking data and information out into the field. It involves using a spatial/virtual reality headset that lets the wearer see and interact with digital content at a job site by overlaying holograms or 3D models over the real world. For example, Lengieza said, a person can visualize what the design of the building is supposed to be, right alongside the current progress of the building to detect any problems or issues.

Kris Lengieza

3. Robotic technology: This is currently being used to automate processes and increase productivity for such jobs as welding, demolition, drywall hanging, brick laying and masonry assistance (lifting concrete blocks) but it is not commonplace, he said. He envisions robotic technology in rover and data collection applications evolving more rapidly in the construction industry. 4. Automation technology: The mining industry is using this technology to have haul trucks respond to calls to the shovel,

move into position and haul to dump points, Lengieza said. Development is happening with backhoes, bulldozers, excavators and other construction vehicles so that they can operate themselves and make construction safer and faster. 5. Machine learning: This is being used to more efficiently — and with greater accuracy — analyze and categorize project data, which in turn helps boost productivity, increase safety and reduce costs, Lengieza said. A method of data analysis, machine learning is a process wherein computers, by creating algorithms, learn from previous data without being explicitly programmed. 6. Artificial intelligence (AI): This involves layering industry knowledge into machine learning so AI can think like a construction superintendent and, by way of example, make suggestions, he said. However, that is a ways off because there must be enough aggregated data to train AI models and then time has to be invested to evolve those models. The education session “A Construction Tech Odyssey - From Today to 2025” will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2020, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at ConExpo-Con/AGG. 

Stay Informed By Attending College Course Sessions “IFPE education is always a fantastic experience for the attendees, but with the addition of the college course sessions, it becomes a vitally important aspect to the show.” Medhat Khalil Milwaukee School of Engineering

Along with its prestigious lineup of education sessions, IFPE 2020 will be hosting college course styled speaker sessions at the show in March. These hands-on sessions will help attendees get the most out of their IFPE experience by providing information critical to the success of companies as the industry continues to expand and develop. “IFPE education is always a fantastic experience for the attendees, but with the addition of the college course sessions, it becomes a vitally important aspect to the show,” said Medhat Khalil from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. “This added dimension of fluid power education will benefit the attendees with the broad range of crucial information it provides”. Four half-day IFPE “college-level courses” will emphasize hands-on technical knowledge on the effective use of hydraulics in mobile equipment: (1) fundamentals of hydraulic systems 101; (2) fundamentals of hydraulic systems 201; (3) hydraulic fluid properties, efficiency and contamination control; (4) digital design. The above sessions will explore fundamental concepts such as cutting-edge fluid power technology, the future of machine controls and A.I., the power of IoT and how to correctly harvest

it, how hydraulic fluids affect machine performance, clean hydraulic assembly procedures and so much more. “The IFPE show is truly a one stop shop for hydraulic education and technology,” said Ralph M. of JBT Aerotech. “This is a unique show that gives tools to fluid power engineers to design efficient value oriented hydraulic systems. This is a priceless event.” IFPE focuses on the latest innovations, product advances and expert insights to fully equip engineers and others involved in the design and manufacturing process to increase efficiency, contain costs and improve the performance of their hydraulic and pneumatic systems and applications. Attendees also will have access to the returning Tech Experience exposition that focuses on all the emerging and leading ideas and technologies that will transform construction and engineering in the future. IFPE and the co-located ConExpo-Con/AGG exhibitions will be held March 10-14, 2020, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, targeting the fluid power/power transmission/motion control and construction and construction materials industries. 

Metso to Unveil Latest Innovations At ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020, Metso will showcase its latest innovations and field-proven technologies for the aggregates industry, with solutions designed especially for the show. “In the world of construction, dependability matters. At Metso we’ve turned our over 150 years of experience in crushing and screening into solutions that aggregate producers and contractors all over the world depend on to increase their production and profitability, year in and year out,” said Simon Pelletier, SVP USA and Canada at Metso. “This year, we have built our show specifically with small- to midsized quarrying and general contractors’ needs in mind.” Special Previews for ConExpoCon/AGG Visitors

Previously launched at the 2017 show, the MX Multi-Action cone crushing technology has been warmly welcomed by quarry operators around the world with close to 100 units sold in total globally. This year, Metso will feature the new MX3 crusher and a special Lokotrack mobile crushing plant equipped with an MX4T crusher. The new Lokotrack ST4.10 mobile screen is a high-capacity screening plant for quarrying, which further adds to Metso’s range of hybrid equipment. These new solutions will be on display for ConExpo-Con/AGG visitors. Metso’s key offerings at ConExpoCon/AGG 2020 also will include the new lightweight truck body solution Metso Truck Body for hauling more with less. The complete solution is

available for all major off-highway truck models used in quarrying and mining operations. At the show, Metso will demonstrate how Metso Metrics Services for managing and monitoring a Lokotrack fleet can help optimize utilization, reduce surprises and keep costs in check. Backed by Metso’s portfolio of parts, including the new Contender Series for 3rd party equipment, upgrades and worldwide service and partner network, Metso will present the widest offering in the market to get more from existing assets throughout their life cycle. Enabling New Business Opportunities in Recycling and Demolition “Transportation and landfill are a major part of the costs related to demolition and recycling. Also, recycled aggregates are becoming more acceptable in many regions. We are excited to showcase to ConExpo-Con/AGG visitors our latest solutions to enable new business opportunities and savings in recycling and demolition,” Pelletier said. Metso will introduce the Nordtrack product family with purpose-designed and field-proven features for general contractors and small- to mediumcapacity aggregate producers. The new Nordtrack range includes track-mounted crushers and screens as well as track-mounted and wheel-mounted stacker conveyors ideal for recycling, demolition and small quarries. Metso will be located at booth C31531 (Central Hall). For more information, visit metso.com. 

Ritchie Bros. to Hold Las Vegas Auction During Show Every three years, tens of thousands of contractors from around the world descend upon Las Vegas for ConExpoCon/AGG, making it the perfect time for an equipment auction. On March 12 to 13, 2020 — during the week of ConExpo — Ritchie Bros. will sell thousands of items through an unreserved public auction at its site in Las Vegas, approximately 20 minutes from the trade show grounds. Ritchie Bros.’ PriorityBid functionality allows customers to place bids on items online days ahead of the auction, or customers can participate live and real-time

right from the trade show floor via Ritchie Bros.’ mobile application. Bidders also can participate in person at the auction site or online at rbauction.com. “ConExpo-Con/AGG is the perfect time for consignors to take advantage of the massive crowds expected in Las Vegas,” said Mike Dastic, regional sales manager, Ritchie Bros. “The marketing campaign for our March 2020 event is expected to reach hundreds of thousands of potential buyers — no other auction company can match our technology, customer database, or marketing expertise.

We encourage sellers to contact us today to make sure their equipment gets maximum exposure.” For large consignments, Ritchie Bros. is offering sellers across the United States the option of selling their assets in Las Vegas virtually. Equipment will remain on the consignor’s property and be sold by photo at Ritchie Bros.’ auction site. More than 100 companies have already consigned equipment to the March Las Vegas auction, including companies from overseas. Early consignment highlights include:

Kinshofer Offers New Versatile KFX-Series Breakers Kinshofer, a global manufacturer of excavator and loader crane attachments, added the new KFX-Series hydraulic breaker excavator attachments to its product line. The manufacturer announced the breaker series with the acquisition of Hammer, an Italy-based manufacturer of demolition, excavation, recycling and material handling attachments. The new series offers features that improve operator comfort and safety, reduce wear and improve productivity and longevity. “Versatility, safety and efficiency aren’t just buzzwords at Kinshofer,” said Francois Martin, Kinshofer North America general manager. “We strive to provide our customers with high-quality equipment that fits their individual needs and improves jobsite safety and overall efficiency. The KFX-Series greatly expands our product range with a dependable line that completes our offering and gives contractors the option to get all of their attachments from one source.” The 14 models in the KFX-Series offer operators a wide range of weight and power options. This makes it easy to find a breaker that fits individual needs in road work, demolition, recycling, tunneling and

underwater applications. The smallest model in the series, the KFX 14 — designed for excavators weighing 8 to 15 tons — produces 1,475 foot-pounds (2,000 joules) and 600 to 900 blows per minute. At the upper end of the series, the KFX 200 — for 100- to 200-ton machines — produces 25,815 foot-pounds (35,000 joules) and 150 to 250 blows per minute. The KFX 20 to 200 also feature two adjusting valves, allowing operators to adjust the number of blows per minute and select operating pressures from 160 to 200 bar. Choosing a longer piston stroke will result in slower operation and more energy per single blow. This is for when the material is very hard and capacity isn’t the main concern. A shorter piston stroke results in less single-blow energy but faster operation, making it ideal for softer material and greater capacity per hour. Kinshofer’s KFX-Series breakers also improve operator comfort and reduce maintenance needs. A polyurethane shock absorber built within each breaker lowers vibration transmitted to the excavator frame and cab, increasing comfort and minimizing wear on excavator components, such as bushings. This also helps to

reduce noise emissions. The KFX-Series breakers include an autolube system that allows direct greasing of the lower bushing and spacer, thereby improving the longevity of retainer pins and bushings and reducing the need for manual greasing. This option also enables

operators to control greasing from the cab or automatically through movement of the hammer. Kinshofer can add air tubes to KFX models for tunneling and underwater projects. Air tubes fill the breaker with defined air pressure, preventing water or dust particles from getting inside. Users simply attach an air supply to a connection point on the breaker housing, creating an air cushion that protects from damaging moisture and dust. “The KFX-Series offers an impressive array of features that make it one of our most versatile products,” Martin said. “We are one of the only manufacturers to offer a broad 2-year warranty because we believe in the quality of all our products. The KFX-Series is a welcome addition to our already extensive lineup. We believe the quality and versatility it provides will make it a popular option for contractors looking for an affordable breaker with a ton of great features.” Kinshofer also offers the KSB-Series of breakers for excavators from 0.5 to 12 tons. For more information, call 800/2689525 or visit www.kinshofer.com. 

Hitachi to Showcase Wide Range of Machines at ConExpo Hitachi will have a range of models on display at ConExpo/ConAGG in booth N12525, including the ZX345USLC-6, ZX245USLC6, ZX350LC-6, ZX470LC-6 and ZX60USB-5. ZX345USLC-6 The new ZX345USLC-6 is the largest of Hitachi’s reduced-tailswing excavator line, which also includes the ZX245USLC-6, ZX135US-6, ZX85USB-5 and ZX75US-5. Whether it’s road building or work in congested quarters, the ZX345USLC-6 packs all the power you need into its reducedtail-swing design, helping this model maximize efficiency, reliability and durability, according to the manufacturer. The ZX345USLC-6 is one of the only reduced-tail-swing models in the industry that features a full-size cab. Designed for a 35-metric-ton machine, the heavy-duty undercarriage provides greater stability, increased lift capacity and a lower center of gravity.

The ZX345USLC-6 is one of the only reduced-tail-swing models in the industry that features a full-size cab.

ZX245USLC-6 The ZX245USLC-6 delivers all the efficiency, reliability and durability customers expect from larger excavators — in an easy-to-maneuver package. Equipped with a powerful EPA Final Tier IV (FT4)/EU Stage IV Isuzu engine that features integrated, effective engine technologies, the ZX245USLC-6, along with all of Hitachi’s Dash-6 Series

excavators, does not require a diesel particulate filter. ZX350LC-6 With a variety of features that make it efficient, reliable and durable, the Hitachi ZX350LC-6 has an insatiable appetite for work, according to the manufacturer. It offers generous swing torque, dig force and lift capacity. The spacious cab offers premium seat options,

including an actively cooled and thermally heated leather seat, and easy-to-operate controls for smooth and responsive hydraulics. This reliable workhorse also comes standard with a pattern-control switch, battery disconnect switch and fuel shutoff. Additionally, the fuel-efficient EPA Final Tier IV (FT4)/EU Stage IV Isuzu engine does not require a diesel particulate filter, saving service time and lowering operating costs. Hitachi Solution Linkage Integrated Grade Guidance with Topcon, a factory-integrated grade reference system developed in cooperation with Topcon, is an option that is available on the ZX350LC-6. Solution Linkage works as a one-stop-shop to take the guesswork out of achieving the right grade, and it monitors in realtime so jobs can be completed quickly. ZX470LC-6 The ZX470LC-6’s greater horsepower, combined with optimized

hydraulics for bigger arm- and bucket-digging forces, allows for more work to get done in a day. Loaded with a fuel-efficient EPA Final Tier IV (FT4)/EU Stage IV Isuzu engine, the excavator meets rigid emission standards and no diesel particulate filter is needed. On the ZX470LC-6, a multi-language LCD monitor and rotary dial provide intuitive access to machine info and functions. Ergonomically correct short-throw pilot levers provide operators with smooth, precise control with less effort while pushbuttons in the right lever allow control of auxiliary hydraulic flow for attachments. ZX60USB-5 As the largest of Hitachi’s compact excavator line, the ZX60USB5 bridges the gap between the ZX50U-5 compact and the ZX75US-5 mid-sized excavators. With its reduced-tail-swing design, this compact, yet powerful excavator is perfect for work in congested or confined areas. 

Manitowoc to Debut Six New Cranes at ConExpo 2020 The Volvo stand at ConExpo 2020.

Volvo Drives Construction Into the Future With Ambitious Showcase Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is set to build tomorrow with an interactive customer experience at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020. Displaying solutions for today and tomorrow, Volvo CE will present its range of products and services across 60,000 sq. ft. of show space in Las Vegas, from March 10-14. More than 30 machines and related uptime and productivity services will be featured, including a number of global and regional launches, at a new location in the outdoor Festival Grounds, booth F3432. Volvo CE will be joined by sister companies Volvo Penta, Volvo Trucks and Volvo Financial Services, who will be presenting the latest engine, truck and financial offers. Likewise, Volvo CE’s other equipment brands Terex Trucks and SDLG will be present at the show. Melker Jernberg, president of Volvo CE, said, “Our presence at ConExpo is set to be our best yet — with a fully immersive technology experience to highlight the changing face of construction. Innovation has long been a part of our DNA, and we are especially proud to be bringing it to the mainstream with the unveiling of some game-changing launches at this year’s show. We look forward to seeing you there.” Confidence in Advanced Machines and Services Anchoring the booth are show-stoppers from both the largest and smallest models in the Volvo range. At the compact end of the spectrum, visitors can get hands-on experience operating Volvo CE’s electric compact machines, the L25H loader and ECR25 excavator. The biggest iron in the booth will be on prominent display with the heavy-duty EC950F crawler excavator, Volvo CE’s largest excavator, which is now available globally, and the powerful R100E rigid hauler — both offering strength and stability for quarrying, mining and mass excavation. Volvo’s full force of excavators will be front center in the booth, including the new EC300E hybrid excavator, now available in North America, featuring straightforward and industry-first hydraulic hybrid

Volvo technology. In road machinery, Volvo will debut the 8 ft. class P5110B tracked and P5170B wheeled pavers, which benefit from simple controls and proven technology. ConExpo 2020 also is where Volvo will reveal two new concept models that herald where the company is taking connected, electric and autonomous machines. Volvo service offerings are everywhere in the booth, custom-built to boost customer’s profitability, secure uptime and deliver on lifecycle value. Attendees can get familiar with Volvo Assist technologies, now standard on many products, with hands-on demonstrations to show how the machine control software gives operators greater accuracy and time savings. An extensive display of more than 30 attachments, from buckets to couplers to forks and breakers, will be fitted on equipment across the Volvo booth, showcasing versatility and performance. Building Tomorrow In keeping with the company’s theme of Building Tomorrow, visitors can watch for a project launch that will show how Volvo CE turns words into actions. The project is dedicated to combining the power of Volvo people, products and partners to help address global challenges and build a brighter tomorrow for people around the globe. Likewise, construction fans also can give something back in advance of the show by helping Volvo CE pick a worthy cause to benefit from the auction of the limited edition EC200E Volvo excavator. By taking part in an online poll, participants can choose which non-profit will receive proceeds from the machine’s sale at the Ritchie Bros. auction in Orlando, Fla., in February. The excavator, which will make its final public appearance at the Volvo CE ConExpo stand, has been touring North America over the past six months to celebrate the 10th season of Gold Rush, a TV series focusing on the challenges facing teams of miners digging for gold in the United States and Canada. Manitowoc Cranes will return to ConExpo in 2020 to unveil six new cranes to the lifting market. In addition to these, four other crane models that were introduced in 2018 and 2019 also will be on display at the company’s booth, with several making their North American debuts. The large number of new cranes launching at the tradeshow reflects Manitowoc’s improved product development cycle under The Manitowoc Way. It was less than a year ago that Manitowoc launched six new cranes at bauma 2019, and the company is matching this impressive number at ConExpo. The six new models will come from the Manitowoc, Potain, Grove and National Crane ranges, covering a wide spectrum of lifting industry needs. Barry Pennypacker, president and CEO of The Manitowoc Company Inc., said the company is delivering on its promise to design and manufacture new products more rapidly so that Manitowoc customers can utilize the increased capabilities and efficiencies they bring and earn more return on their capital investments. “At ConExpo 2020, we plan to show how our innovation and velocity efforts under The Manitowoc Way are producing cranes that offer class-leading design and performance,” he said. “Many of our customers provide direct input into the design and functionality of our new cranes, and we know that they will be thrilled to see their contributions come to life. ConExpo will be a great opportunity to show the entire lifting industry that at Manitowoc, The Revolution is Real.” Previously announced cranes at the company’s booth will include: the Grove GRT9165 rough-terrain, GMK5250XL-1 allterrain, TMS500-2 truck-mounted, and GHC140 telescoping crawler cranes; the Potain Hup M 28-22 (with a U.S.-specific transport axle) self-erecting crane; and the National Crane NBT60L boom truck. And where for years Manitowoc hosted a booth at the Las Vegas Convention Center’s Gold Lot, which is now closed due to construction, Manitowoc will now occupy Booth F6144 in the new Festival Lot near the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara Avenue. Terex Trucks to Tout Its TA300, TA400 at ConExpo 2020 Terex Trucks is bringing both the TA300 and TA400 to ConExpo. As part of the Volvo family, the company will be sharing a booth in Las Vegas with other Volvo Group brands including Volvo Construction Equipment, Volvo Trucks and SDLG. Visitors to the company’s F3432 booth will have the chance to take a closer look at both the TA300 and TA400 articulated haulers and discover the significant investments and improvements that have been made in the products, facilities, people and processes since Terex Trucks was acquired by Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) in 2015. From March 10 to March 14, the team will be on hand to discuss everything from how Terex Trucks haulers deliver low total cost of ownership, to expansion plans, current and future product investments and why North America is a strong market for the company. We’ve Got Dump Trucks in Our DNA “North America has always been a strong market for us, so we’re looking forward to meeting current and future customers from the region, as well as further afield, at ConExpo,” said Paul Douglas, managing director of Terex Trucks. “A significant proportion of the

machines we make at our Motherwell facility in Scotland are distributed to customers across North America. As a company, we want to grow our business in North America, reaching new customers and working with our expanding strong dealer network in the region — which currently stands at 40 dealers — to deliver an even better service. “We are the experts in articulated haulers and we’re the right company to invest in due to the reliability, durability and low total cost of ownership of our haulers. There has never been a better time to invest in a Terex Trucks hauler — make sure you stop by our booth to find out more.” A closer look at the TA300 and TA400 is not all that the Terex Trucks booth is offering, there will be a giant Jenga and beat the buzzer game, with daily prizes for the fastest time on the buzzer. “ConExpo is a showcase of virtually every machine in the industry — but for Terex Trucks, it’s all about the articulated hauler,” said Douglas. “The articulated hauler is the only product Terex Trucks develops — so we’re able to focus all our attention on this machine.” Hauler Highlights In North America, the TA300 and TA400 are sold with a three-

Since the beginning of last year, the TA300 has been manufactured with a new transmission, leading to improvements in fuel efficiency, performance, productivity and operator comfort, when compared to the previous model working in the same application, according to the manufacturer.

year warranty, telematics and planned maintenance included as standard — and there are competitive finance packages available for lease and wholesale. One example of the recent improvements Terex Trucks has made is the product upgrade on the TA300. Since the beginning of last year, the TA300 has been manufactured with a new transmission, leading to improvements in fuel efficiency, performance, productivity and operator comfort, when

compared to the previous model working in the same application, according to the manufacturer. The 30-ton (28 t) workhorse delivers a 5 percent improvement in fuel efficiency, a 3.1 mph (5 kmh) increase in speed to 34 mph (55 kmh) and an increase in the length of time between oil maintenance intervals from 1,000 to 4,000 hours. In addition, the machine now comes with eight forward gears as well as four reverse gears, to help ensure

smoother gear shifting and thereby higher levels of operator comfort. All of this means that customers can be more productive, achieving faster cycle times, lower cost per ton and reduced carbon emissions. Kicking the Tires Equipment Shows Like ConExpo Draw Crowds Who Want to See New Iron Up Close By Lucy Perry CEG CORRESPONDENT

For efficient operations, safer job sites, a prepared workforce and a healthy bottom line, adopting new technology is a given. That means the latest in machinery itself. Dealers can guide contractors in the buying process. The Internet offers details on new model features. But many construction equipment business owners believe they get the most bang from climbing into the cab of that new machine and putting hands on the latest technology. That’s why brick-andmortar equipment shows like ConExpo still make sense. The granddaddy of equipment shows in North America, ConExpo-Con/AGG takes place every three years. This year, it happens March 10-14, and organizers are expecting a record-setting 2,800 exhibitors in equipment booths staged over 2.6 million sq. ft. of exhibit space. The massive event, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, is a fantastic opportunity for equipment end users to gather as much information as they’d like about the latest equipment models, cutting-edge technology and business services. Because they can kick the tires, talk with equipment specialists and compare features among manufacturers, the investment in being there is worth the trip to many. Innovation Is King In addition to a tradeshow featuring expansive equipment displays and running all day long, ConExpo also features educational sessions that take place every day during the show. One of this year’s sessions, “Driving New Innovation at Complacent Companies,” addresses committing human and technology resources to move from status quo to innovation no matter what size company you own. Speaker James Benham, founder of technology solutions company JBKnowledge, believes there are steps even the smallest company needs to take to be on the cutting edge. Attending equipment show in person is one way to gain knowledge about cutting-edge technology. Here are others: • Level the playing field: Benham believes technology is the great equalizer, and embracing change can improve any company’s bottom line. • Give the right people the right tools: It’s crucial that people who can implement technology have access to it. If you want to innovate, give the improvisers, the tinkerers and those willing to experiment a forum to express their ideas, said Benham. • Mitigate risk: In incorporating new technology, start small, build up your profit mar-

Equipment shows like ConExpo, held every three years, offer heavy equipment end users the opportunity to get their hands on new models, talk with machine experts in person and learn about cutting-edge technology in a relaxed atmosphere.

Large-scale equipment trade shows allow manufacturers to display new technology to a captive audience. Attendees connected to the construction trades are there to see the latest technology that manufacturers have to offer.

gin and focus on processes and methods that can be measured, he said. • Look to the future: Benham encourages every company owner and manager to stay informed about current innovations in technology, how best practices change and what’s on the industry’s horizon. Rubbing Shoulders With Competitors Smart contractors look to equipment shows to do just this. “Today’s equipment buyers are looking for multiple ways to stay informed about products, learn about what’s happening in the industry and [discover] what is new and different about products they use in their workplaces,” said Dana Wuesthoff, ConExpo-Con/AGG show director. “Reading industry publications or doing online research are great ways to get indepth information. However, there is nothing like attending shows and actually seeing and touching the equipment.” see CONEXPO page 14

Komatsu to Create Connections at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020

There will be nearly 25 Komatsu machines on display, including brand new models as well as machines that have been recently introduced.

Komatsu will be a major exhibitor at this year’s ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020 in Las Vegas. With the theme “Creating Connections,” Komatsu’s booth N-10825 will demonstrate how Komatsu’s distributors and customers are increasingly connected through solutions that leverage digitalization to control costs and timelines. The company will debut Machine Control 2.0 technology in addition to new equipment. Featured in the booth will be equipment, technology and service solutions for construction, waste, quarry, energy, forestry and forklift. There will be nearly 25 Komatsu machines on display including brand new models as well as machines that have been recently introduced. Among the machines featured on the floor will be the D51i-24 and D61i-24 dozers with the recently introduced proactive dozing control. This industry-first technology enables operators to use machine control from “grass to grade.” The system provides a real-time picture of what the ter-

rain around the machine looks like and makes calculated decisions — whether to cut and carry material, whether to spread or fill that material, or whether to perform finish grading. On Wednesday, March 11, 1:00 p.m to 2:30 p.m. at Westgate, Pavilion, Komatsu is conducting an educational training seminar on Equipment Operator Best Practices for quarry managers and site foremen to have a better understanding of how to maximize machine operation efficiencies. On Friday, March 13, 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Westgate, Pavilion 10, Komatsu will offer a seminar on Autonomous Haulage: Lessons Learned from Surface Mining. On the day the show opens, Tuesday, March 10, Komatsu will hold two press conferences at the following times and locations: • 10 a.m. at the Komatsu booth N-10825: “Smart Construction” • 11:15 a.m. lunch and press conference in News Conference Room N252 

Bomag at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020 The Bomag/Fayat Central Hall exhibit #C30316 will feature more than 10 new products, including path and highway pavers, half-lane mills, single drum and tandem vibratory rollers with alternative drive systems, and vibratory plate compactors. Technology displays will give attendees a glimpse into future possibilities and allow all to experience future technology now available from Bomag. The Services and Solutions Group will feature new Service and Emergency kits that help contractors reduce downtime and save money.

and ECOMODE to reduce noise and save fuel consumption by up to 30 percent, helping contractors to save money and protect the environment. Alternative fuel and drive models will be an integral part of the Bomag/Fayat display. Three different solutions for the BW 120 tandem vibratory roller will be shown: traditional diesel, electric and liquid petroleum gas (LPG). The new BM 1300/35 milling machine features Bomag’s ion dust shield that reduces more than 80 percent of fine particulate pollution generated at the job site.

Safety Bomag is committed to working safely, whether it’s in the office, on the factory floor or in the field. Design teams focus on making machine operation and the process safer for customers. From the antivibration handle of the BT 60/4 tamper to the ion dust shield on the new BM 1300/35 mill, Bomag equipment is designed to advance operating safety. Bomag technological innovation helps to remove the operator from potentially unsafe operating conditions. From the concept of a fully autonomous roller to the remote-controlled BMP 8500 multipurpose compactor that takes the operator out of the trench, safe operation is paramount. For rollers, Bomag obstacle detection gives operators a visual display of the obstruction plus audible warning.

Digitalization “Think further — think digital” is a Bomag guiding principle, advancing machine production and service efficiency in the field. On display, the new and free Bomag app demonstrates how it documents roller passes and captures and records compaction values from a standard smartphone or tablet. BOMAP is easily transferable, regardless of roller brand, identifies soft spots in the base, and logs temperatures, Evib values, frequency, amplitude and more. The redesigned BW 206 AD-5 AM with Asphalt Manager 2 on display meets market needs in the Americas for advanced compaction technology combined with ROPS canopy. Asphalt Manager 2 automatically adjusts compaction forces from vertical to horizontal as mat stiffness increases to prevent over compaction plus its standard infrared camera gives operators mat temperature data. All Bomag tandem rollers with Asphalt Manager 2 will be available in the Americas with canopies starting at ConExpoCon/AGG. For more information, visit www.bomag.com. 

Environment Meeting stringent environmental regulations is just the first step in environmental protection. Design features on display like Bomag ECOSTOP, which automatically shuts off the engine after a preset idle time,

GOMACO’S high-production screed is for the paving of bridge decks, flat slabs and concrete floors.

GOMACO Screed on Display at ConExpo GOMACO’s high-production, truss-mounted screed, for the paving of bridge decks, flat slabs, and concrete floors, can advance as much as 4 ft. (1.22 m) in a single pass to drastically reduce finishing time, providing savings in concrete delivery cost and total project labor, according to the manufacturer. The leading auger is 5.7 ft. (1.74 m) long and provides high-production strike-off action and reduces the number of puddlers needed out in front for the project. The 5 ft. (1.52 m) long finishing cylinder compacts and finishes the concrete in a single pass. The 6 ft. (1.83 m) trailing screed provides the final finish to the surface with a unique GOMACO-designed vibratory system. The new high-production screed will be in GOMACO’s booth, C30384, at ConExpo-Con/AGG. 
