Cranes Helped Put NASA Back in Space Crane Rental Corporation is doing its small part to help lift NASA’s shuttle program back into space. Under a subcontract with Ivey’s Construction of Brevard County, the Orlando-based company has rolled a Manitowoc 2250 crawler crane to launch pad 39A. The machine, which boasts a 300-ton capacity, is handling some heavy-duty parts of the launch tower. The bright red machine seems at one with the launch tower, its criss-crossing boom mingling with the tower’s metallic jungle. Sean Spence, vice president of sales at Crane Rental said the Manitowoc was selected for the job because “it has the best conducive capacity for handling the load.” Smaller cranes were considered, but he said the 2250 brings with it the safety features needed for the task. The crane has been at the launch pad since early May, Spence said, and will pull-out at the end of July. Its tasks there include lifting the 50,000-lb. diversion doors and the 13,000-lb. top mast, known as the candlestick. It also will lift the “white clean room” into place, from which the astronauts enter the shuttle. Ivey’s duties on the $12-million contract “include a lot of little things,” said President Kevin Ivey. Primarily, the contractor is performing structural repairs and corrosion control. A NASA contractor for two decades, Ivey also performed work in a $9-million contract for the other launch pad, 39B. He said the sea salt-laden air really takes a toll on the tower’s metal. While on the job, Ivey said they happened upon a severely-corroded crane cap that has been on the launch pad since the Apollo era, which they finally removed. They currently have approximately 25 crewmembers at the site, but once painting begins, that number will likely double. The efforts are part of NASA’s “Return to Flight” safety measures put in place following the 2003 Columbia disaster. Discovery is scheduled to launch from pad 39B in mid to late July. The work on 39A should wrap up by January. For more information, visit www.cranerental.com. CEG Staff

U.S. Navy Enlists Grove on Aircraft Carrier Job Earlier this year Ness Cranes of Seattle, WA, sent its Grove GMK7450 (known as the Grove GMK7550 in the United States) all-terrain crane on board the U.S. Navy’s aircraft carrier, USS John C Stennis, to help erect a new mast. Work took place at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard just outside Seattle, in nearby Bremerton, and lasted just over a month. Ness’s directive for the GMK7550 was to replace the ship’s main mast, as the additional weight of new antennae exceeded the structural limit for the old mast. The heaviest load to be lifted onto the ship, however, was the GMK7550 itself. Weighing in at 550 ton (450 t), it is the largest mobile crane in the Grove line and had to be carried on board by an adjacent harbor crane. “Lifting the crane onboard the ship was the most complicated part of the whole project, but having the GMK7550 on board the ship was crucial; we needed its excellent lifting capacity to take down the old mast and erect the new one,” said Kurt Kleppe, vice president of Ness Cranes. “The engineers at Grove supplied us with all the technical information we needed to make the crane lift, such as the center of gravity, the precise weight of the crane and so forth. However difficult that aspect of the task proved to be, it was certainly worth it, as the GMK7550 worked for over a month with not one minute of down-time.” The first lift on board was to remove the original mast, which weighed approximately 71,000 lbs. (32,205 kg) and measured 105 ft. (32 m) tall. With a 197 ft. (60 m) maximum boom, the GMK7550 was easily able to reach the necessary heights for dismantling the old mast. With this completed, the crane installed the new mast, which weighed approximately twice as much as the original at 125,000 lbs. (56,699 kg). Standing at a height of 116 ft. (35 m) tall, USS Stennis’s new mast is more than capable of handling the necessary antennae inputs and alterations. Ness started business in 1950 and today employs 57 people and owns 37 cranes including 24 Manitowoc Crane Group products — 17 Grove mobile cranes and seven National boom trucks.

Manitowoc, Kobelco Sign All-Terrain Crane Deal Manitowoc Crane Group and Kobelco Construction Machinery Co. announced an agreement under which Manitowoc Crane’s Deutsche Grove GmbH unit will supply all-terrain cranes to Kobelco. The Kobelco-branded cranes will be sold exclusively in Japan. The parties intend to introduce four models of all-terrain cranes in 2005. These new all-terrain cranes will complement Kobelco’s current product line. Kobelco has long been committed to manufacturing and selling lattice-boom crawler cranes and rough-terrain cranes on a worldwide basis, and these all-terrain cranes will provide Kobelco with synergies from increased sales. Kobelco and Manitowoc previously announced an agreement under which Kobelco will supply lattice-boom crawler cranes to be sold by Manitowoc in the Americas under the Manitowoc brand. Kobelco will continue to sell and distribute its own branded latticeboom crawler cranes in the Americas. “We are pleased to supply Grove all-terrain cranes to Kobelco in

Japan, since Kobelco has well- established relationships with the major Japanese customers of lifting equipment,” said Glen Tellock, Manitowoc Crane Group president. “This complements our earlier crawler crane supply agreement, and we look forward to a continuing business relationship for the benefit of both parties.” Takashi Ishida, Kobelco Construction Machinery president, said, “We are happy to be able to offer these all-terrain cranes to our customers in Japan. Grove has an excellent global reputation outside of Japan. We believe that these Grove products will help us satisfy even more of the lifting needs of our Japanese customers, and provide better benefits also. “We are very pleased with the speed of developing business opportunities with the Manitowoc Crane Group. We feel that speed in decision-making is essential to better adjust ourselves to the rapidly changing business environment, and as a part of this adjustment, we recently announced the separation of our crane business from our earth-moving equipment business,” he said. Malcolm Drilling Co. Handles Heavy-Duty Job With Liebherr

NORTHEAST SALES & SERVICE, INC. Your Most Complete Terex/Demag & Tadano Dealer in the Northeast U.S. & Eastern Canada

JUST ARRIVED - READY TO GO

Malcolm Drilling Co. Inc., of San Francisco, is using two brand new 150-ton (136 t) Liebherr HS 885 HD duty-cycle crawler cranes to drill steel-cased pilings for the new Interstate 680 Benicia Bridge, over Suisun Bay, 25 mi. northeast of San Francisco. This seismically-active area requires foundations with enhanced integrity, so Malcolm is using the full-case method to drill 91 7.2-ft. (2.2-m) piles to depths 300 ft. (91 m), below the bottom of the waterway. Temporary over-water platforms were constructed to support two drilling setups, each consisting of a Liebherr HS 885 HD coupled to a Leffer rotator. The rotators twist the steel casings down, cutting through bedrock. The Liebherr cranes then drop 33,000-lb. (14,968 kg), chisels to break up the rock, followed by spherical grabs, which remove spoils through the casings. The cranes then empty 25yd. (22.8 m) spoil removal containers into barges. According to Bruce Wilhelm, executive vice-president of Malcolm, the HS 885 HD cranes were purchased because of Liebherr’s reputation for building rugged machines. “The Liebherr people have been really good to us. They make extremely reliable equipment, give us great service, and even painted the rigs with Malcolm’s colors,” he said. With five locations throughout California and Washington, Malcolm Drilling now owns five Liebherr cranes: two HS 885 HD and two HS 883 HD 150-ton (136 t) machines, and one HS 873 110ton (100 t) machine. Busy Homebuilder Chooses Flexibility of Grove Cranes

Genie’s Z-135/70 Pushes the Work Space Envelope Genie’s Z-135/70 articulating boom offers a large working envelope providing a maximum working height of 141 ft. (42.9 m), horizontal outreach of 69 ft. 9 in. (21.3 m), and up-and-over clearance of 75 ft. 6 in. (23 m). “With exclusive features such as the X-Chassis axle and Jib-eXtend jib, combined with its substantial working envelope, Genie’s Z-135/70 offers industry-leading versatility in the self-propelled 120- to 135-foot market,” stated Roger Brown, vice president of North American sales of Genie Industries Inc. The Z-135/70 features Genie’s X-Chassis axle configuration, which has changed the mechanism for extending and retracting axles. Each axle pivots from vertical mounting pins, providing easy and reliable machine set-up. The Jib-eXtend jib provides exceptional access by extending the platform from a stowed length of 12 ft. (3.7 m) to a fully extended length of 20 ft. (6.1 m). This new design provides access to “up, over and in” applications inaccessible by a traditional jib. Key standard features include full traction four-wheel drive, foam-filled tires, four-wheel steer system with four steering modes, the ALC 1000 control system, drive enable, full onboard diagnostics, fully proportional joystick controls with simultaneous multifunction operation, an 8ft. self-leveling steel platform, 360-degree continuous turntable rotation, and a foot switch time out. Pulte Homes is using Grove truck cranes to build hundreds of new homes in northern Virginia and Maryland. Five Grove TMS900E truck cranes and a Grove RT530E rough-terrain crane are working for the Washington Division of Pulte Homes. It expects to construct 500 houses across five counties in northern Virginia and Montgomery, MD, by the end of this year. The homes are spread across a six county area up to 40 mi. (65 km) from the plant where Pulte Home Sciences manufactures concrete panels, floor trusses, exterior walls, and interior panels used in construction. The homes, ranging in size from 2,000 to 5,000 sq. ft. (185 to 464.5 sq m) each have different panel qualities. On average each they use 25 to 38 concrete panels for the foundation, while the floor consists of another 10 to 13 panels. Pulte’s plant optimizes the panel weight and sizes to work with the crane capacity. Typically, 75 to 85 ft. (22.8 to 26 m) of radius is required to lift the panels in with the TMS900Es, depending on weights, where the house is staged and its size. Pulte rigs these cranes with 95 ft. (29 m) of main boom and a counterweight that weighs 12,900 lbs. (5,851 kg) to handle the panels. Typical swing time using the TMS900E truck cranes is four to seven minutes per panel. Each panel measures 9 to 36 ft. (2.7 to 11 m) and weighs approximately 4,000 lb. (1,814 kg). An entire foundation can be set within eight to 10 hours with a crew, including a crane operator, of seven workers. Pulte’s RT530E, a 4 by 4 rough-terrain crane which has a 30-ton (27 t) capacity rating, is rigged with a four-section 95-ft. (29 m) boom. It is being used for installing exterior framing panels and roof trusses. In addition, the crane is harnessed as a general work horse and used for all manner of different lifting duties within its capabilities. “We went with the Grove brand because it is the industry leader of hydraulic cranes,” said Delhagen. “Grove has the only 90-ton crane that could handle the weights of our precast walls at the radius we need. Grove has also been very willing to build machines that meet our specific needs. For example, while we do not need a second hoist, the machines have been built to accept one should we choose to add it later. That’s service.” 22

National Lifts Moretrench Facility to New Heights in Rockaway, NJ A number of boom trucks from National Crane have been helping groundwater and geotechnical company Moretrench American Corporation with its day-to-day operations. Most recently the company trialed an 18-ton (15.4 t) model 571E at its headquarters in Rockaway, NJ, where it assisted with material handling duties on the expansion of the company’s facilities, lifting PVC pipe needed for a new office building. The Model 571E has a 71-ft. (21.7 m) three-section boom and can be equipped with a 41-ft. (12.5 m) jib. Maximum tip height for the unit is 121 ft. (36.9 m). The company also is making good use of a 26ton (23.6 t) model 9103A it took delivery of last year. The unit is used for transporting pipework, pumps, drill casings and other equipment required on the various projects it undertakes. The majority of the company’s work takes place in New York City and all cranes in the city must have a Certificate of Approval supplied by the NYC Department of Buildings’ Cranes and Derricks Division. According to Joe Tambasco, shop foreman of Moretrench,

who is responsible for the company’s equipment fleet, ensuring the National unit was New York City certified was central to the company’s decision to purchase. “Around 85 percent of the work we do takes place in New York City,” he said. “New York is an island so pretty much anywhere you start digging you’re going to hit water. That’s where we come in. It was essential we had a crane that’s New York City certified to move our equipment between job sites and from our yard in New Jersey into the city.” But it’s not only the fact the crane is certified that has won admirers at Moretrench. “The guys that operate the 9103A love it,” said Tambasco. “Features such as the electronic LMI [load moment indicator] give us a factor of safety which was missing in older cranes. Plus the overall layout and comfort of the crane make it a real pleasure to operate.” The model 9103A has a 103-ft. (31.3 m) four-section main boom and can be equipped with a maximum of 44 ft. (13.4 m) of jib. Maximum possible tip height for the unit is 155 ft. (47.2 m). The unit is mounted on a Mack carrier and makes two to three trips per day. “It’s a real workhorse,”said Tambasco. “We push it hard, sending it wherever we need to and then using it for more lifts in the yard at the end of the day. It has a significant payload which means we can load it up for its travels. It performs well and we’re very pleased with it.” In addition to the model 9103A, Moretrench also has a 20-ton (18.1 t) Series 600E in its fleet. Both cranes were supplied through local dealer Garden State Engine & Equipment Co. Mike Johnson, district manager of the company, said the sales to Moretrench reflect the continuing dominance of National Crane in the New York area. “The fact our cranes are so easy to certify is an excellent selling point,” said Johnson, “but it’s by no means the only reason we’re doing so well in the region. Customers like the industry-leading performance that National offers together with the very best in customer support we provide. It’s the reason that companies at the top of their game — such as Moretrench — want to include National equipment in their fleets.” Moretrench was founded in 1931 by Thomas F Moore and designed, built and installed the first practical wellpoint dewatering system in the United States. Today it comprises six subsidiary companies operating from seven locations in the United States and employs 175 people. It has worked on some of North America’s most prominent construction projects of recent times including World Trade Center in New York, the Big Dig project in Boston and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Virginia.

Link-Belt Welcomes HTC-8690 Spinoff

The new HTC-8690 shares many features found on other LinkBelt telescopic cranes such as CALC and CabWalk.

a manual transmission but without a clutch pedal, for traveling up and down steep grades. In addition, it has all the smooth controllability features of an automatic transmission. Air-ride suspension is standard on both the front and rear axles of the HTC-8690. This suspension not only provides a smooth highway ride and on-tire lifting capacities, but it also allows job-site travel with all of the 39,500 lbs. (17,917 kg) of counterweight.

To further expand the flexibility of Link-Belt’s HTC-8690, the company unveiled the new HTT-8690, 90-ton (81.6 t) hydraulic truck terrain crane. This new HTT joins other models that include the 75ton (68 t) HTT-8675 and the HTT-8675LB long boom. The HTC-8690 90-ton (81.6 t) telescopic truck crane includes a Link-Belt design for a simple and reliable locking and latching system for the 140-ft. (42.7 m) five-section boom. In addition, there is a new Link-Belt-designed boom that requires no greasing at all due to Teflon wear pucks impregnated in the full contact wear pad surfaces. Unlike other cranes in this class, there is no deduct in the capacity chart for telescoping any load. Maximum tip height is 237 ft. (72.2 m) with the additional two 16 ft. (4.9 m) lattice inserts that can be installed between the boom head and the optional 35 to 58 ft. (10.7 to 17.7 m) bi-folding lattice. All of these attachment combinations have offset positions of 2, 15, 30, and 45 degrees.

Winches That Perform The winches deliver 16,880 lbs. (7,657 kg) of line pull and 480 fpm (146.3 m/min) of line speed. Spooled onto the winch drum is .75 in. (1.9 cm) diameter rotation resistant wire rope. The new HTC-8690 shares many features found on other LinkBelt telescopic cranes such as: CALC (Confined Area Lifting Capacities) lifting capacities, CabWalk, lightweight Stow-n-Go outrigger pontoons, full deck aluminum fenders, and pre-paint.

Operator’s Cab

Link-Belt Expands HTT Truck Crane Lineup

The HTC-8690 also reveals the next generation cab that not only is bigger and wider but also has new expanded front glass for critical operator viewing from the six-way adjustable seat. A choice between dual axis or single axis joystick controllers along with the 540 Microguard Rated capacity limiter and optional air conditioning make crane operations smooth and effortless.

Link-Belt has announced the addition of rear steering on the HTC-8690 to create the new HTT-8690. The HTT-8690 hydraulic truck-terrain crane joins other models that include the 75-ton (68 t) HTT-8675 and the HTT-8675LB long boom. All of the models that feature rear axle steering have the prefix HTT, which stands for hydraulic truck terrain and incorporate all of the same features as their corresponding HTC, or hydraulic truck crane models. “It is the next logical step for us to add the rear steer feature to this successful 90-ton crane,” said Rick Curnutte, telescopic crane product manager. “Maneuverability is critical to a crane’s productivity and by adding rear steer, the market appeal of this crane should only get better,” said Curnutte. With the rear axles now steerable, the operator has four models of steering available: independent front, independent rear, all-wheel coordinated, and crab steer. Utilizing the rear steer option, the turning radius is significantly reduced for optimum maneuverability. The HTT product line includes standard 445/65R22.5 single tubeless radial tires and hub piloted aluminum disc wheels on the front and rear. Tires are interchangeable between front and rear as HTT crane models use single tires on the rear axles. For more information, call 859/263-5200 or visit www.linkbelt.com.

Counterweight Flexibility The standard modular style counterweight package of 11,500 lbs. (5,216 kg) provides enhanced roadability and there are options for 26,500 lbs. (12,020 kg), 32,500 lbs. (14,742 kg) and 39,500 lbs. (17,917 kg) to further extend the crane’s lift performance. For highway travel, each of these counterweight packages are easily moved to optimize the weight balance between the front and rear axles. The system to raise and lower the counterweight is totally controlled from the comfort of the operator’s cab.

Mobility Powering the HTC-8690 is the 445-hp (331 kW) Detroit Diesel Series 60, 12.7-liter engine with 1,450 ft./lbs. (1,966 J) of torque. It’s coupled to ZF’s AS-tronic “automated” transmission with 12 forward and two reverse speeds. This transmission provides all the benefits of 6
