ink-Belt Construction Equipment Company held CraneFest 2009 at its world headquarters in Lexington, Ky., the week of Sept. 28. The event marked Link-Belt’s 135th Anniversary, and its 35th year at its Lexington facility. Link-Belt played host to representatives from its distribution network from around the world who, in turn, brought along their clients for entertainment and education. On the day of arrival, guests traveled by bus to tour some of Lexington’s horse country and famous landmarks followed by dinner. The next morning Link-Belt President and CEO Chuck Martz and Vice President of Sales and Marketing Bill Stramer spoke to the visitors about Link-Belt’s innovative, forward looking approach as a world leader in the crane industry. The company continues to invest in the marketplace as evidenced by construction on a major addition to its manufacturing facility providing a total of 682,000 sq. ft. of space. As well as increased production, the company continues to work on developing new and innovative products, implementing improved manufacturing methods and improving materials for increased operating capabilities, efficiency and safety of its cranes. Following a tour of their manufacturing plant, a live demonstration and product introduction was followed by some one-on-one hands-on time for those attending the event.

Massive Water Storage Tank in Maryland Requires 550-Ton Crane By Brenda Ruggiero CEG CORRESPONDENT
The construction of a 3.5 million gal. water storage tank in Cumberland, Md. recently required the use of a 550-ton (499 t) crane for about a week. The crane was a Grove GMK7550 all-terrain hydraulic truck crane, rented from W.O. Grubb in Baltimore. “It is the biggest crane in the region,” said a representative of W.O. Grubb. The full dollar amount of the project is $3,676,665. The general contractor was Carl Belt Inc. of Cumberland, and the subcontractor was Natgun, which is based in Wakefield, Mass., but has numerous regional offices. Skilled workers were on the job from Cumberland’s Carpenters Local Union 1024 and Laborers Local Union 616. Other subcontractors included Walter N. Yoder for mechanical and S & S Electric for electrical. Work began in April and will be completed in November. The Ridgedale Reservoir is located on the west side of Cumberland, which is in western Maryland. The tank replaces an old reservoir built in the 1920s that had been leaking for years. However, the new tank was built inside the old reservoir, which resulted in limited working space. “We had to use a crane this size due to only having one crane position and because of the radius of the tank,” explained Chuck Vaughn, Natgun superintendent. Vaughn noted that the 550-ton crane was used to erect precast panels that were cast on-site. The heaviest panel weighed 55,000 lbs (24, 947 kg). As the panels dropped into place, workers ensured that each slab was 3.25 in. (8.25 cm) from the tank’s rubber liner. Carl Belt also used a 90-ton (81.6 t) crane to assist with putting the 550-ton crane together. A 40-ton (36 t) crane was used to erect materials on the tank. A total of 65,000 cu. yds. (49,696 cu m) of earth will be brought in to back fill around the tank.
Photo courtesy of Kevin Spradlin/Cumberland (Md.) Times-News. The construction of a 3.5 million gal. water storage tank in Cumberland, Md. recently required the use of a 550-ton (499 t) crane for about a week.
Tom Ostendorf, project manager of Carl Belt, noted that the project is “pretty straightforward.” The tank will hold 3.5 million gal. of water for the city of Cumberland. Each wall panel is 35 ft. (10.6 m) high. At its center, the tank is 52 ft. (15.8 m) deep. According to Vaughn, Natgun ran behind schedule because of weather, which presented the most difficult challenge for the company. Natgun provides wire-wound concrete tanks. According to its Web site, most water storage tanks are built with either steel or concrete. Natgun combines the two materials to build a maintenance-free tank. “Seventy-five years of tank building experience have taught us that a watertight steel diaphragm is critical for long-term performance and reliability. We embed the steep diaphragm within a concrete wall, then prestress the tank with individual layers of wire and shotcrete. Wall and dome panels are precast on site to ensure quality, minimize construction time, and eliminate the risk of damage during transit.” CQ

Heavy Lifting to the Depths of Underground Water Filtration By Rick Zettler Historic System New York’s Croton Water System dates back to the mid-19th century, and today, is made up of 12 reservoirs and three controlled lakes located throughout Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties. Croton, the smallest of the reservoir systems, routinely provides 10 percent of the city’s fresh water and, at certain times, supplies up to 30 percent. The Croton Water System is vital to New York City’s drinking water supply. However, substantial development along the system’s watershed has led to problems with storm water runoff, forcing periodic shutdowns of the system. Development along the system also has caused problems with the U.S. Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA’s Surface Water Treatment Act requires the supplier of an unfiltered water system to have ownership control of the watershed. However, the Croton water system is 80 percent suburbanized, resulting in the need for a filtered Croton water supply. A project of this size and limited access required STJV to add a lot of specialized equipment to its fleet, including the recent purchase of a new Terex HC230 lattice boom crawler crane with a 230-ton (208 t) lifting
SPECIAL TO CEG
In 2007, Skanska-Tully JV (STJV) received the contract to build the Croton Water Filtration Plant. At more than $1.3 billion, it is the largest single construction contract in New York City’s history offered to a single contractor. No matter how the colossal underground project is explained, it is difficult to comprehend the magnitude of it. Crews excavated nearly one million cu. yds. (764,554 cu m) of earth prior to construction of the fourstory facility. The Croton Water Filtration plant structure will require more than one million sq. ft. (92,903 sq m) of wall forms, enough to cover the entire exterior of the Empire State Building and more than 100,000 sq. ft. (9,290 sq m) of concrete slab forms will be used, which is more area than many of the largest sports stadiums around the globe. Perhaps the most astonishing feature of this project: by 2012 most New York City residents will not even know it is there. The entire Croton Water Filtration Plant, including lab, filtration area and offices, will be underground. Once completed, the land will be given back to the Mosholu Golf Course, where a driving range will cover most of the Bronx Borough plant site.

capacity for construction of the structure. Facing the Ultimate Challenge As an underground facility, the Croton Water Filtration Plant presented STJV with a number of unique challenges. Simply excavating nearly 100 ft. (30.48 m) into the ground presents constant issues with ground water. Another challenge is that STJV needs to complete the civil, structural and mechanical construction and start-up/commissioning of the plant by Oct. 12, 2011, or the project faces significant penalties. However, site access for this underground project is the monumental challenge. Everything must be taken from ground level and hoisted into “the hole.” All construction details have to be meticulously planned, because the nearly 400,000-sq. ft. (37,161 sq m) structure is fully enclosed by earth. “We cannot fly equipment into the side of the building like we could if it were built above ground,” said Harold Miller, project manager of STJV. To meet these challenges, STJV currently employs a variety of cranes, including tower, rough terrain and lattice boom crawler cranes, at the job site. The new Terex HC230 lattice boom crawler crane and three other crawlers are positioned at strategic locations at ground level. The rest are working in the hole. “We have enough cranes to provide coverage to every square inch of the building,” explained Brian Cubala, equipment superintendent of STJV. “As we progress, we’ll need more to keep up with the workload.” Positioned at ground level, the Terex HC230 serves as the critical link between all the supplies at ground level and the hundreds of workers in the hole. Its boom is virtually in constant motion throughout the day, hoisting whatever is needed — including wall forms, concrete slab forms, job boxes, rebar, concrete and tools — to construct the filtration plant structure. The Terex HC230, along with the other cranes at the surface, performs the majority of the critical picks, like hoisting a rough-terrain crane into the hole. Most of the picks performed on this job site by the crawler crane are done in the blind, so the operator must be able to feel the load as the foreman in the pit is directing him. “I like the fact that I can feel the rumble of the auxiliary load hoisting drums, so I get a real sense of the load,” said Jeff Howell, licensed crane operator/operator engineer for Local 14. “If my pit man wants the load moved one-eighth-inch, I can give it to him with this crane.” STJV specifically selected the Terex HC230 for the varied lifting requirements during the four-year Croton Water Filtration Plant construction project. Offering a maximum lift capacity of 230 tons (208 t), the machine is among the cranes with the highest capacity on the job site. “STJV needed a 200-ft main boom and added the heavy lifting option of the counterweight plus package,” said Ron Lado, sales representative of Empire Crane Corp., a Terex Cranes dealer for New York who sold STJV the Terex HC230.
The HC230 is helping the contractor stay ahead of schedule. “By completing 40 percent of the structure’s concrete by the end of December, we beat the first of two major contract milestones by more than three months,” said Miller. By October 2011, New York City residents will have filtered water to drink for the first time in the city’s history. The Croton Water Filtration Plant will supply 292 million gallons of fresh water per day and reliably be able to supply up to 30 percent of the water needs of New York City. CQ
Terex HC230 Lattice Boom Crawler Crane The Terex HC230 lattice boom crawler crane offers a maximum 230-ton (208 t) lift capacity. At 12-ft. (3.6 m) wide and 11.5-ft. (3.5 m) high, the base crane design transports on a standard lowboy trailer. While STJV equipped its Terex HC230 with a 200-ft. (60.9 m) main boom and 77-in. (195.5 cm) Hammerhead tip boom, the machine can be equipped with up to a 290-ft. (88.3 m) lift crane boom. The standard hydraulic counterweight removal system makes the HC230 one of the most transportable cranes in its class, according to the manufacturer. An optional counterweight plus package adds 54,400 lb. (24,675 kg) additional counterweight to the machine — 32,000 lb. (14,514 kg) to the carbody and 12,400 lb. (5,624 kg) upper counterweight — to optimize lifting capacities across wide working radii of the boom. The powerful 300-hp (223 kW) diesel engine powers multiple hydraulic pumps, and the hydraulic system is designed to allow the operator to perform multiple crane functions simultaneously without hydraulic lag, keeping cycling times to a minimum. Two identical independent main and auxiliary load hoisting drums provide lifting power and produce a maximum line speed of 540 ft./min and maximum single line pull of 54,060 lb. (24,521 kg). Logical load and information flow of the interactive operator’s control screen and ergonomically designed cabin equipped with heater and air conditioner optimize operator productivity and safety. The crane can climb slopes of up to 30 percent. The Terex HC230 lattice boom crawler crane is built in Wilmington, N.C.
Deep in the Action Delivered on the job site in August 2008, STJV put the Terex HC230 lattice boom crawler crane into action in December. Prior to its start-up, the crane went through New York City approvals before it was put to work. “The City reviews the entire machine — from engineering drawings to the welds to load charts — so the process takes several months,” mentioned Sam Meroney, regional business manager of Terex Cranes. “It’s the same process that all new cranes must go through before working in the city.” Ever since December, “the HC230 has not stopped working,” added Cubala. 8
