Malcolm Drilling Co. Inc. of San Francisco, is using two brand-new 150-ton Liebherr HS 885 HD duty cycle crawler cranes to drill steel-cased pilings for the new Interstate-680 Benicia Bridge, over Suisun Bay, 25 miles northeast of San Francisco. The new bridge is aimed at reducing traffic congestion between Benicia and Martinez. This seismically active area requires foundations with increased integrity, so Malcolm is using the full-case method to drill 91, 7.2-ft. (2.2 m) piles to depths 300 ft. (91.4 m) below the bottom of the waterway. Temporary over-water platforms were constructed to support two drilling setups, each consisting of a Liebherr HS 885 HD coupled to a Leffer rotator. The rotators twist the steel casings down, cutting through bedrock. The Liebherr cranes then drop 33,000-lbs. (14,969 kg) chisels to break up the rock, followed by spherical grabs which remove spoils through the casings. The cranes then empty 25-yd. (22.8 m) spoil removal containers into barges. According to Bruce Wilhelm, executive vice president of Malcolm, the HS 885 HD cranes were purchased because of Liebherr’s reputation for building rugged machines. “The Liebherr people have been really good to us,” he said. “They make extremely reliable equipment, give us great service, and even painted the rigs with Malcolm’s colors.” With five locations throughout California and Washington, Malcolm Drilling now owns five Liebherr cranes: two HS 885 HD and two HS 883 HD 150-ton machines, and one HS 873 110-ton machine. According to John Malcolm, chairman and CEO of Malcolm Drilling, he is impressed with the performance of the Liebherr products and the company is considering adding a LR 1280 300-ton capacity crane. Manitowoc HDT 80 Cranes Operate With Ease on Congested Job Sites
Conco Cement and Rudolf & Sletten use the Manitowoc HDT 80 self-erecting tower cranes to build new multi-story student housing at the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.
When the University of California, Berkeley, needed to build new student accommodations in a congested downtown site it turned to Manitowoc HDT 80 selferecting tower cranes. Four of these HDT 80 tower cranes have working in downtown Berkeley, CA, aiding concrete contractor, Conco Cement, working for Rudolf & Sletten in building four new multi-story residence halls for students. The residence halls, including conference areas, recreation space, study rooms and common lounges, are tightly situated between existing 1960s-built halls and are only one block from the central campus. “We are very excited about this project, which will improve the housing and quality of life for our students while enhancing the surrounding area,” said Genaro Padilla, vice chancellor for undergraduate affairs. While popular in continental Europe, selferecting tower cranes are less common in North America — but there are some innovators who are learning the potential of these products. One is California-based SI Equipment Services, which purchased the first five Manitowoc self-cranes in North America. SI Equipment Services now has 34
Manitowoc self-erecting units in its rental fleet, as well as a full range of Manitowoc products, and has sold an additional 15 units. Although the cranes have a footprint of just 15 by 15 ft. (4.5 by 4.5 m), they can lift a maximum of 6.5 tons (5.9 t) or 1.5 tons (1.4 t) at their maximum jib length of 148 ft. (45 m). The units have a 112-ft. (34 m) underhook height when the jib is laid flat, as well as the ability to luff. “That’s one of the outstanding features of these units,” said Thomas L. Kowalski, president, SI Equipment Services. “With four machines in such a congested area, being able to luff allows the machines to ‘weathervane’ when out of service — a requirement in California. The machines are also very easy to set up, erect and dismantle. We’ve even put one up just for a weekend. The set-up costs involved can be also radically reduced, by as much as two-thirds over other types of cranes,” Kowalski added. Much of the work on the University of California job involves moving reinforcement bars, timer and concrete buckets around the site. Conco Cement has been satisfied with the operation of the HDT 80 cranes and has 20
With a footprint of just 15 by 15 ft. (4.5 by 4.5 m), the HDT 80 tower crane can lift up to 1.49 tons (1.35 t) at a maximum jib of 148 ft. (45 m).
invited SI Equipment Services to bid for additional Conco projects. SI Equipment Services also is receiving recognition from its other university tower crane projects at UCLA and University of San Francisco, as well as the Disney Performing Arts Center. SI Equipment Services is experiencing market growth and is finding that 80 percent of its business is repeat work. Self-erecting tower cranes have been a big part of its success. “Contractors who try self-erecting tower cranes once tend to stick with the concept,” said Kowalski. “Self-erecting tower cranes are not an experiment for us,” he continued. “This is what we do — we consider ourselves to be aerial innovators.” For more information, visit www.groveworldwide.com. Moving the crane entailed negotiating wet, freshly excavated roadbed with an incline of slightly more than 13 percent and traveling across the asphalt parking lot on timber mats. Digging & Rigging ‘Walks’ 348 HYLAB 5 Through the Muck TOWER from page 22
progress of the job. The transition of the heavy 348 crane from the timber mats to the recently cut earth road went without incident. The Link-Belt’s powerful six-cylinder, 476 hp Isuzu BB-6WB 1XOB-01 diesel engine had power to spare. Jim Gregory Jr., Digging & Rigging’s vice president, lowered the boom slightly (10-15 degrees) as he made the climb to better enhance the machine’s overall balance. “We inched up the slope without hesitation, idling at 800 rpm,” he said. Dennis Caniford, who erected the tower segments and walked the big crane back down for disassembly, noted that the ergonomics of the new 348 HYLAB 5 operator’s cab is a “delight.” “Being wider and longer, it has more room,” he said. “The 20-degree tilt capability was important for comfort and safety during the erection of the 450-foot tall MPT television tower. The operator’s view is excellent. The controls are strategically positioned for maximum operator availability. Overall, this new crawler crane has to rate high operator marks.” The crew assembling and erecting the crane encountered only one problem –– having to remove some of the paint in the bolt holes. Sixteen flatbed truckloads hauled the crane’s components from Digging & Rigging Inc’s Hagerstown, MD, yard over the interstate highway system to a closed MDOT truck scales parking area, just off southbound lanes of I-270 near Hyattstown. Even then, only the base crane’s 12-ft. wide load required an over-the-road police escort. The tracks, counterweights, boom and jib sections arrived on site unescorted. The tower, manufactured by Sabre Communication of Sioux City, IA, is one of six that MPT has strategically positioned throughout the state. The new towers are needed because the existing ones are not capable of supporting the new antennas required for digital television transmission. 24
Once the tower was erected, a steel platform was placed, followed by a 28-ft. tall antenna weighing approximately 3,500 lbs. Sabre Communications engineered, fabricated and shipped the tower unassembled to Maryland. It retained Wolf Contractors of Marriottsville, MD, to handle the site preparation, foundation construction and tower erection. In the case of freestanding towers, General Manager Dave Wolf said that they are normally self-erecting, using an ascending gin pole to raise them as they go. In this instance, however, time was of the essence. Having Digging & Rigging Inc. use its Link-Belt 348 crawler crane do the work meant the project was completed in days instead of weeks, which was imperative considering that the tower placement was already a year behind schedule. The crane method was also chosen because it is considered a safer method. The tower was prefabricated on the ground in sections and then assembled in the air. Wolf excavated the base support pad foundations and placed the heavy reinforcing steel. The company then contracted TBK Concrete Construction Co. Inc. of Edgewater, MD, to supply and pour 396 cu. yds. (302.8 cu m) of concrete for the foundation.
Wolf crews assembled and erected the first 100 ft. (30.4 m) of the tower from the ground with the assistance of Digging & Rigging Inc. cranes, including a Link-Belt HTC-8660 and a 150-ton machine to erect the next three tower segments. The triangular tower’s base section has three 39-ft. (11.9 m) wide faces. Each leg was fabricated of solid steel, as per state specifications, rather than from the more conventional hollow steel pipe. These were set individually and connected together on the ground. Digging & Rigging’s first lift with the new Link-Belt 348 Hylab 5 crawler crane weighed 12,770 lbs. (5,792 kg). The 20-ft. (6 m) tall section of the triangular tower had three faces, each 25 ft. (7.6 m) wide. The crane worked at a 92 ft. (28 m) radius with a boom angle of 82 degrees. The final section lifted for the project weighed 14,700 lbs. (6,668 kg) and was 90 ft. (27.4 m) tall with faces 9 ft. (2.7 m) wide at the bottom and 7 ft. (2.1 m) wide at the top. To facilitate its balance and vertical placement, the crew positioned the lifting slings on this section 25 ft. (7.6 m) below its top, allowing operator Dennis Caniford to negotiate crosswinds at the 360 ft. (109.7 m) tower elevation and ensure the safety of the three Wolf tower technicians waiting to make the final connection. CEG
Company History Digging & Rigging Inc. was founded in 1981 by James E. Gregory Jr. as a local excavation company with one Case loader/backhoe and a single axle dump truck. Today, it is essentially a crane rental service. Susan Gregory, Jim Jr’s mother, is the firm’s president, and his father, Jim Gregory Sr., as general manager. “We are considered to be a comparatively small specialized company,” said Gregory. “We work primarily in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia area. “However,” he said, “if the job is right for us and we have the cranes for it, we are available to undertake it anywhere. We have a select client list of repeat customers who we have served over the years.” The company’s equipment ranges in size from a 15-ton Broderson carry deck machine to a 365-ton capacity all-terrain hydraulic truck crane, and the company owns six Link-Belt cranes –– and a number of smaller Link-Belt hydraulic truck cranes. “We own this brand of cranes because they have proven to be very powerful, efficient and reliable machines,” said Susan Gregory.

Raito Bores Way Through Sewer Overflow Tunnel in Rhode Island RAITO from page 8
tings. • Downhole cutting wheel unit, which uses hydraulic power from ground level and a circulation system. • The Raito method, which essentially bores through material dry, by rotating a casing string equipped with drill bits, then breaking up and removing the material inside the casing. As the drilling continues, crews add casing sections to the drill string, much like oil well drilling. The SuperTop I is designed for cased cast-in-place concrete piles, but it can also be used to drill hollow shafts without concrete fill. The SuperTop I RT 300, manufactured by Nippon Sharyo Ltd., Nagoya, Japan, has a driving force of 132 tons (120 t) and an extraction force of 418 tons (380 t) and a stroke of 29.5 in. (75 cm). It rotates between .9 and 1.5 rpm. A diesel-driven power unit supplies the hydraulic force for the chuck, which holds the drill string and rotates it. The advantage of the Raito system over the other methods is its simplicity and footprint: it doesn’t require systems to handle fluid used in drilling, since it can work dry. With counterweights, the base RT 300 drilling unit occupies a space of 25 ft. by 18 ft. (770 by 550 cm); it weighs 53 tons (48 t). A typical job-site layout need only be 115 by 49 ft. (35 by 15 m) in area. Height of the unit before adding guardrails and taking into consideration the height of the pile sections is only 11.5 ft. (3.5 m), considerably less than taller pile-top rigs. The small footprint and minimum equipment requirements work to Raito’s advantage for the Providence job, because it’s located downtown, next to the state capitol, the Amtrak rail line, a canal and several major roads. The key to the SuperTop I RT 300 operation is a wedge-shaped chuck, similar in principal to the chuck in a hand drill, which holds the casing in place. Only the chuck on the SuperTop I is hydraulically opened and closed. In Providence, Raito first spotted the RT 300 atop steel H-beams on top of the hole, then bored a seven-eighth in. (2.1 cm) thick outer casing 8 ft. 2 in. (2.5 cm) in diameter through the silt overburden and into 23 ft. (7 m) of rock. This helps protect the adjacent embankment, over the nearby Amtrak rail line, from being disturbed. After sinking the
outer casing, crews switched to the 200 cm inner casing, using a drill section with 36 replaceable cutting bits. The Link-Belt crane, from dealer Woods CRW Corp., Worcester, MA, spots casing sections on top of one another as the string progresses downward. Then, after a section of shaft has been drilled, the Raito crew uses the crane to drop a 20,000 lbs. (9,000 kg) hammer down the hole, breaking up the rock. After it’s broken sufficiently, they use a proprietary Sharyo clamshell, designed to fit snugly inside the casing sections, to muck out the hole. Trucks
drilling deep shafts in Hong Kong and Japan.) While the weight of the casing string helps drive the teeth into the rock, too much weight can break the carbide teeth, which must be used in rock. Therefore, the RT 300 incorporates a load balancing system to apply just the right amount of pressure on the bottom casing section. To date, the only problem Raito has encountered was the sudden appearance downhole of an underground stream, following a heavy rain, which almost halted drilling and then stalled extraction efforts. Crews
Bill Allen (L), project manager of Raito, has been pleased with the performance of the Link-Belt LS-308H II, a 110-ton (100 t) capacity lattice boom crawler crane, which his company purchased from Mike Sylvia, of Woods CRW, Worcester, MA.
haul spoil away after it has accumulated. According to Allen, the Link-Belt model is the only one that meets Raito’s space and power requirements for this job. It has a track length of 20 ft. 11 in. (6.4 m) and an extended width of 17 ft. 6 in. (5.3 m). Its diesel power unit develops 332 hp (248 kW). When the drill bits wear down and need replacing, the crane, with the assistance of the RT 300 in the extraction mode, pulls the entire drill string out. Here the hydraulic inching control on the crane helps considerably. In the overburden, the team averaged 73 minutes per meter drilling speed; in bedrock, the rate has dropped to 231 minutes per meter for the inner casing. (This compares very favorably with Raito’s experience 28
took corrective measures and the flow also decreased. According to information on the SuperTop unit from Sharyo, this depth is about the maximum any of its units have achieved in ultra-deep boring. As far as alignment is concerned, initial tests showed the SuperTop I RT 300 unit is holding to its specified perpendicularity of 1 in 500 maximum deviation. Crews are placing concrete liner at the rate of 20 ft./day (6 m). The Raito system also is being used to drill test piles on a seepage control project in a dam near Waterbury, CT. When the Providence project is completed, Raito expects to move the unit to a project at the Atlanta airport. CEG
Problem is, no one seems to know for sure.
We’d like to tell you how long a typical National crane lasts.
The reason is simple: over 90 percent of the cranes we’ve made since 1963 are still on the job and working hard today. That’s because of our: • Advanced engineering, that ensures long life • High-quality steel, to stand up to hard work • Full life-cycle testing, the industry’s toughest • Stringent final inspection prior to shipping • Nationwide dealer network, to keep your crane up and running • Dealer parts-stocking program, committed to providing equipment replacement parts on a breakdown rush basis, minimizing down time • And our full oneyear warranty.
National Crane is ISO 9001 Certified
Add it up: Less down time, longer crane life and higher resale value mean greater return on your investment in a National crane. National’s full line of telescoping cranes offers capacity ranges from 40 ton (36.29 t) to 5.35 ton (4.85 t) and reaches from 166 ft (50.60 m) to 48 ft (14.63 m).

The counterweight carrier for the Superlift attachment for the 300-ton model LR 1280 liftcrane holds a maximum of 264,000 lbs. (119,748 kg) and is supported on four articulating self-powered wheel assemblies.
Bragg Crane Service recently completed renovation and expansion work within a major oil refinery in Long Beach, CA. The project required both demolition and replacement of duct work plus installation of new components deep within the petroleum processing unit. The customer’s original plans called for multiple cranes to be moved several times within the confined structure to complete all lifts. But Bragg’s engineers were determined to develop a more costeffective solution. The company’s planners asked Liebherr Nenzing Crane Co. to engineer a new Superlift attachment with adjustable tailswing for its 300-ton model LR 1280 liftcrane. The counterweight carrier holds a maximum of 264,000 lbs. (119,748 kg) and is supported on four articulating self powered wheel
assemblies. A massive hydraulic ram seamlessly extends or retracts the counterweight carrier, thereby adjusting tailswing from 37 to 49 ft. (11.2 to 14.9 m) –– even while lifting a load. In tight quarters, a load may be lifted at a short radius with counterweight at minimum tailswing. Then the rig is swung, the Superlift is extended and the load is boomed out and set at a long radius. All these operations can be carried out simultaneously. Computerized controls monitored on a screen in Liebherr’s comfortable tilting cab facilitate the correct settings and operational limits for capacity, swing, radius, tailswing, boom tip height and load parameters. A video monitoring system for the counterweight carrier and winches provides additional comfort and provides for safer operation. CEG 4

Boring Rig, Crane Combine Drop Shafts in Tight Quarters By James Van Horn CEG CORRESPONDENT
To sink a pair of 6.5-ft-diameter open shafts 250 ft., mostly through rock, a specialty contractor is using a compact dry boring rig originally designed for cast-in-place piles. Raito Inc., Geosystems Construction Specialists, the American arm of a Japanbased construction firm, is installing two concrete-lined vent and drop shafts for the new Combined Sewer Overflow tunnel in Providence, RI. Raito’s U.S. headquarters are in San Leandro, CA, with branches in Crofton, MD, and Waterbury, VT. Raito’s equipment spread is nothing if not economical: the two main units are the above-ground drilling unit, known as SuperTop I RT 300, and a Link-Belt LS308H II, a 110-ton (100 t) capacity lattice boom crawler crane equipped with an angle boom. The Link-Belt unit was selected for providing the right combination of compact size and necessary power/capacity. Raito’s job is part of the first phase of the Rhode Island Narragansett Bay Commission’s massive Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) project, a 20-years-plus, $700-million job designed to improve water quality in Narragansett Bay. Program manager for the project is the Louis Berger Group, East Orange, NJ; construction manager is a joint venture of Gilbane Building Co., Providence, and Jacobs Associates, San Francisco, CA. At the heart of the project, which started in earnest last year (CEG Sept. 10, 2003, NE 19), is a 3.5-mi (5.6 km) long, 30-ft (9.1 m) diameter chamber, known as the main spine tunnel, approximately 250 ft. (75 m) below ground, which will hold up to 62 million gal. (235 million L) of sewage and rainwater from the older combined sewers of the Providence/Narragansett Bay area. Currently, during dry weather, wastewater and runoff water goes to the commission’s treatment plants. But during periods of any rainfall more than half an inch in 24 hours, flow quickly overwhelms the plant and it is diverted directly to the Bay. In addition to being a nuisance, this shuts down much the area’s shellfish harvesting industry for at least a week, as well as public beaches. The tunnel will store effluent until it can be treated.
Raito’s Link-Belt LS-308H II towers over the capitol building in Providence, RI.
A joint venture of ML Shank Company Inc., Highland, CA, and Balfour Beatty Construction Inc., Atlanta, (parent company located in Great Britain) is constructing the main spine tunnel with a Hitachi tunnel boring machine. The machine started full operation this spring after the main access shaft and the head of the tunnel were excavated and blasted out. In addition to the tunnel, this phase of the Narragansett Bay CSO project also involves the construction of a pump station and a series of shafts and chambers. Raito is building two of the drop and vent shafts at the north end of the tunnel, in downtown Providence near the State Capital. (Excavation of the main spine tunnel started at the Bay, or south, end of the job approximately three miles away, next to the commission’s treatment plant.) 8
According to Bill Allen, project manager of Raito, when completed the shafts will be 235 ft (71.7 m) deep with a 6 ft., 6.75 in. (200 cm) diameter. The first 59 ft. (18 m) of the shaft were sunk through fine silt and sand, which then abruptly gave way to the underlying bedrock, mainly stratified metamorphic formations. For drilling holes like these, through both silt and rock, there are a number of options: • Kelly bar or rotating table, which drives the drill bit from the surface as penetrates the ground or rock. The weight of the drill string drives the bit downward. This type of unit is most commonly used in drilling oil wells, but also caissons and drilled shafts. • Pile-top drilling rig with a reverse-circulation drilling unit, which uses water or other fluid to flush rock bits and carry away cutsee RAITO page 28
