Vermont. The company has a total of 15 cranes available in its fleet, three of which were purchased form Woods CRW, including the Link-Belt, a Manitowoc 222 100-ton (91 t) crawler crane and a Link-Belt LS 248 200-ton (181 t) crawler crane. According to Mark Selig, “CCS is always great to work with [because] they exhibit great cooperation and a willingness to solve problems. “In a project of this magnitude, communication is always a key and we’ve never had a problem in that area,” added Selig. “Pizzagalli Construction has a very strong safety culture and it’s important that our subcontractors share the same philosophy,” he said. “CCS has always come through for us in that area. “Staying on schedule is also critically important to us and we can count on CCS to hold up their side of that equation,” said Selig.

operating every day that we are working,” added Carpenter. “We have snowmaking guns that are as close as 40 feet away from our job site. “At these elevations, hard winds are commonplace and trying to do steel erection at these heights is challenging enough without those winds,” said Carpenter. “[However], CCS’ people have risen to those challenges admirably.” With the help of the Link-Belt, CCS has been able to move materials around the site from the center of the building project. The Link-Belt 138 H5 is an 80-ton (73 t) crawler crane with 140 ft. (43 m) of main boom and 45 ft. (14 m) of jib. According to Sam Davis, crane rental manager of CCS, the company has had very good luck in the past using Link-Belt cranes. “The Link-Belt LS248H-II, which we owned [prior] to the new machine, has operated virtually maintenance-free and has given us no down time during five years of operation,” said Davis. “We have literally put no money back into that machine,” he added. CCS’ cranes are forced to operate under extreme weather conditions. Sometimes temperatures on the job site can reach as cold as 20 degrees below zero. “Yet, even in those temperatures, our Link-Belt starts every time,” said Davis. He also finds the Link-Belt easy to assemble and extraordinarily mobile. “When it came time to purchase the new 138 H5, it was pretty much already determined that we would be buying our next crane from Woods CRW,” said Davis. “We have the need for a rough-terrain crane and this new machine matches up perfectly with what we were looking for.” “Woods CRW is a local company, also headquartered in Burlington, VT, and the service that we received from them has always been exceptional,” added Davis. The relationship stretches back at least a generation, when CCS’ founder established a strong business relationship with Woods CRW’s founder Bob Wood.

The finished project at Sugarbush Ski Resort will be a 117,000-sq.-ft. (10,869 sq m) structure, which includes 2,200 pieces of steel that weigh more than 700 tons (635 t) total.

About Pizzagalli Pizzagalli Construction was founded in 1958 and is today a nationwide contractor that works on projects as far away as Colorado. According to Mark Selig of Pizzagalli, the company’s current annual volume of construction work exceeds $32 million. Most of its projects include handling all of the site work, utility work, and erection of buildings themselves. Terry Carpenter speaks highly of the contractor and enjoys the partnership between CCS and Pizzagalli. “We have had a good working relationship with Pizzagalli Construction for many years,” said Carpenter. “Typically, we will work together on one to two jobs a year.”

About CCS CCS was founded in 1967 and is the largest crane rental house in 10

Southwest Airlines flight 1248 skidded off a runway at Midway Airport in Chicago, IL, Dec. 9, 2005.

Airplane Skids Onto Chicago Road Lifting Gear Hire Corporation and Imperial Crane Services Inc. recently joined forces to remove Southwest Airlines flight 1248 from the intersection of West 55th Street and Central Avenue in Chicago after the plane skidded off a runway at Midway Airport. Imperial Crane used Lifting Gear Hire’s Modulift 50 spreader beam system, a lifting solution that accommodates awkward loads, to move the Boeing 737-700 jet. “A spreader beam was needed to complete this task, and the Modulift system was a reliable choice,” said Ricky Bohne of Imperial Crane Services Inc., who supervised the rigging at the site. “In order to move the plane, we set the Modulift beam at 13 feet. The top rigging included 25-foot, 40,000-pound round slings, doubled. Two 12foot round slings, each with a 66,000 pound capacity, were used on the sides. “In addition, we used 50-foot, 90,000-pound round slings hooked to each landing gear for towing the plane backwards. We were able to successfully move the airplane back over the curb, through the fence

Manitowoc Produces 500th GMK5100 All-Terrain Crane

Dawes Rigging and Crane Rental purchased the 500th Grove GMK5100 all-terrain mobile crane produced by Manitowoc.

“The GMK5100 is an extremely popular model, in both the new and used markets. It is the cornerstone of many rental fleets around the world. Production continues at our manufacturing facility in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, in order to supply demand worldwide,” said Philippe Cohet, executive vice president of Manitowoc Crane Group in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. “The GMK5100 is the most popular five-axle all-terrain of modern times and a testament to the engineering excellence at Grove.” The 120-ton (100 t) GMK5100 first appeared in 2000. It is a versatile all-terrain crane, due to features such as a 167.3-ft. (51 m) main boom, maximum jib of 112-ft. (34 m), taxi configuration and a 12-ton (11 t) counterweight.

Manitowoc Crane Group has produced its 500th Grove GMK5100 (GMK5102B in the United States) all-terrain mobile crane. The crane was purchased by Dawes Rigging and Crane Rental, part of All Erection & Crane Rental Corp. based in Cleveland, OH. It was delivered at the end of 2005. “The GMK5100 has one of the best lifting charts in its class. It is a reliable, hard-working machine used for a variety of jobs. We’ve got a number of these machines at depots across the country and they’re consistently popular with our customers,” said Jack Swan, vice president of operations of All Erection. “We are proud to take delivery of the 500th GMK5100, and I’m sure we’ll add even more of these cranes to our fleet in the future.” 18

face for 40 to 50 years by sealing all of the pores in the stone. A representative of the Mississippi Stone Guild is overseeing the process. Mogstad said his company is currently restoring other buildings, including the chemistry building at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. “I like bringing buildings back from the dead,” Mogstad said. Roberts-McNutt will call the crane back to the site midway through the project to remove some of the scaffolding and again at the end of the job, which should be sometime in September. “We’ll go through the entire process again, just in reverse,” Bradshaw said. Installation was expected to take three to five weeks, but he predicted the dismantling process will be faster. Clements expects the work, when complete, will result in a significant improvement. Sitting on a hill away from the tall buildings of downtown Little Rock, the Capitol dome can be seen from most parts of the city. “It will have a big impact on people’s views,” she said. CEG

Clements, State Department education coordinator and former Capitol historian. Secretary of State Charlie Daniels, whose department is overseeing the project, said he is proud of the Capitol and what it represents. “We sought the grant because the exterior stonework had received virtually no restoration work since the late 1980s. The dome was cleaned in 1988, but since then, the dome has become heavily soiled and stained with lichen,” he said. Clements said the original proposal for the dome looked much different. The first architect of the structure, which was completed in 1913, proposed a more expensive design. Budget and aesthetics led state leaders to a second architect. Roberts-McNutt Project Manager Jerry Mogstad said his crew, which will number 10 workers during the job’s peak, will perform a variety of tasks to bring the Capitol back to its glory days. He said they will clean all of the limestone and grind out the mortar joints, as well as repair some damaged stone. Crews will then cover the entire surface with a mineral coating that should protect the sur20

Summit Erectors ‘Holds the Mayo’ With Manitowoc By Jeff Cronin CEG ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Structural work begins on the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, FL.

Before Summit Erectors began the full scope of its work at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, crews had to ensure they wouldn’t interfere with the facility’s operations. President Kurt Treece said his firm ensured the welding process would not interfere with the hospital’s delicate MRI equipment and surgical lasers. As a precaution, Miller Electric of Jacksonville, FL, ran some special electrical circuitry to the site to ensure the medical equipment would not be affected. There are two aspects of the project: the vertical expansion of a two-story building by four stories for an additional 200,000 sq. ft. of space as well as a six-story tower, to be called Mayo Clinic Hospital, with 300,000 sq. ft. of space for 214 hospital beds. The expansion will house administrative offices and outpatient services. Summit is a subcontractor on the job for lead contractor Centex Construction of Nashville, TN. What makes this job different for the 25-member Summit crew is the tremendous reach demanded of the cranes on site. Treece said most of the work requires the machines to lift material 230 ft. over an operational hospital with 7,000-lb. loads. To meet these demands, the crew brought in its Manitowoc 888 with a 190 ft. tower and a 170 ft. luffing boom. The Summit crew, led at the site by Field Supervisor Robert Showalter and Project Manager Bob Homrich, has been on the job since mid-October and expects to wrap up its part of the work by July. Just a few weeks into the job, Treece said is was one week ahead of schedule. He said a lot of time will be saved throughout the project since it brought a surveyor onto the job before work began to ensure the steel it was erecting is detailed to fit the existing structure. He said this eliminates the guesswork of “working with a drawing with supposed dimensions that are theoretical.” Treece said his crew will erect 4,200 tons of structural steel and metal deck, fabricated by Steel Services in Jackson, MS, through the length of the job. He credits Steel Services for helping his crew stay ahead of schedule. “They have been moving their deliveries up to meet our needs,” he said. Treece founded Summit Erectors in 1993. The company is co-owned by Vice President Benny Cleghorn. In addition to the Manitowoc at the Mayo Clinic site, the firm owns Manitowoc 999 and 555 crawler cranes as well as a 65-ton lattice boom truck and a 50-ton hydraulic truck crane. Historically, the firm had rented all of its cranes, but decided to begin purchasing the machines approximately two years ago. Summit always supplies its own operators and does its own maintenance on the machines. In total, the company employs between 50 and 100 people, depending on the scope of its assignments. Currently, its crews also are working on two parking garages and a sevenstory office building in Jacksonville. The $255-million Mayo Clinic Hospital is scheduled to open in early 2008. CEG 22

Crane Assists With Spring Cleaning of Arkansas Capitol By Jeff Cronin CEG ASSOCIATE EDITOR

It’s taking more than a bar of soap for Robert-McNutt Inc. to give this “bath.” The North Little Rock, AR, contractor has been called in to clean and restore the State Capitol Dome. To do so, however, it needed the assistance of Dick Moody Cranes in Benton, AR, and its Grove GMK 5120B 120-ton (109 t) crane to lift scaffolding and tools into place. Ray Bradshaw, owner of Dick Moody, said the GMK “fit the application well, as far as height and reach capacity.” The operator performed one of the longest reaches at the start of the job. From the northwest side of the building, the crane lifted items 140 ft. (43 m) away at a maximum height of 190 ft. (58 m). The crane primarily lifts bundles of scaffolding and plywood — which weigh up to 3,000 lbs. (1,360 kg) — but it also is used to set the restoration crew’s

equipment into place, the heaviest of which is the hot water cleaners at approximately 350 to 400 lbs. (160 to 180 kg). The crane’s location actually was the company’s second choice. From the other spot, he said, the crane would only be able to reach one landing point, whereas the operator now has access to two points. In addition, the first site was located over underground vaults. Although there were no weight restrictions over the underground structures, “They didn’t know how much it could hold and I didn’t want to find out,” Bradshaw said. One of the challenges for which Bradshaw said his operator is prepared is the gusty wind. A wind meter mounted near the tip of the boom determines how far it can be safely extended. Bradshaw doesn’t foresee wind causing a problem, as “I think we’ll be able to send material up there faster than they can disperse it.” With the crane in place, no pedestrian traffic is allowed on the west side of the building and vehicle traffic is not allowed between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. But once all of the scaffolding is in place, the crane will be removed and all ground restrictions will be eliminated. The restoration project is funded through a $1-million grant from the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council. It is the most extensive restoration project ever performed on the Capitol, said Ann see DOME page 20

Link-Belt Helps Contractors Tackle Mountainous Project By Kate Zanoni CEG CORRESPONDENT

Contractors Crane Service (CCS) is taking on a project the size of a mountain and has enlisted the help of a new Link-Belt 138 H5 crane to get the job done. CCS recently purchased the crane in October from Woods CRW Corp. In Williston, VT. Pizzagalli Construction, a large national construction firm from Burlington, VT, serves as the project’s general contractor. The company has contracted CCS to provide crane and operators to execute all steel erection as the two contractors collaborate to build a new lodge and an underground parking structure on Mount Ellen at the Sugarbush Ski Resort in Warren, VT.

The finished project will be a 117,000-sq.-ft. (10,869 sq m) structure, which includes 2,200 pieces of steel that weigh more than 700 tons (635 t) total. Construction began in September 2005 and is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2006. (For skiers who wish to avoid construction traffic, Sugarbush Resort also offers accommodations on Lincoln Peak, Mount Ellen’s next-door neighbor.) According to Project Manager Terry Carpenter, this presents a challenge for the contractors. “We will be operating through the winter at the base of a ski resort in northern Vermont,” said Carpenter. “What the weather doesn’t throw at us, the guests of the resort will. “The ski lift is only a few hundred feet from our site and will be see SUGARBUSH page 10

With the help of the Link-Belt LS 138 H5, Contractors Crane Service has been able to move materials around the site from the center of the building project. The Link-Belt LS is an 80-ton (73 t) crawler crane with 140 ft. (43 m) of main boom and 45 ft. (14 m) of jib.
