Depreciation Bonus Begins Phase-Out
Contractors Should Take Advantage of This Fading Tax Provision
By Lucy Perry CEG CORRESPONDENT
Contractors who correctly apply the concept of bonus depreciation have the advantage of maximizing their tax benefits while the rate is still relatively high. In 2023, the federal government began a gradual phase-out of this tax provision, which allows businesses to deduct a significant portion of the cost of eligible assets in the year these assets are placed into service.
Understanding the ins and outs of depreciation takes some effort, but with it you can offset taxable profit. It works when you take into account the artificial expense you’re incurring as your equipment ages and loses value. Plus, correctly depreciating

Erlinger Is Heavy-Duty Resource for Major Construction Work
By Eric Olson CEG CONTRIBUTING EDITOR
After joining what is today Russ Erlinger Crane Service in Lebanon, Ill., in 1988, Rich Hillesheim advanced through the company to later become its president and owner. Along the way, the firm’s success continued to grow as it became well-regarded for its outstanding service in the greater St. Louis area, where it worked with clients on both sides of the Mississippi River.
Not only did Erlinger Crane Service become popular among customers in southern Illinois and Missouri, its reputation also has allowed the business to extend its operations to other parts of the Midwest and beyond.
In the process, it has become a cornerstone in the crane, rigging and hauling industry since its formation in 1981.
After Hillesheim semi-retired from his role within the company a few years ago, he entrusted its leadership to his sons, Hunter and Holden. By infusing young talent into the leadership of the crane service, the elder Hillesheim has ensured its success for many years to come.
Hunter Hillesheim serves as Erlinger’s vice president, a position he has held for the last three years; his younger brother, Holden, joined the firm at the beginning of
this year as its director of operations.
“I would say that 60 percent of our business is in Illinois and 40 percent in Missouri,” said Hillesheim. “We are over in Missouri every day, and we are located only 20 minutes from downtown St. Louis.”
Several Factors Contribute to Growth
Although it does not sell cranes, Erlinger has long been noted for offering bare crane rentals from its assortment of top brands of heavyduty machines, including all-terrains, rough-terrains, crawlers, truck cranes, telehandlers and carry decks.
“We have everything from 15ton carry decks to 550-ton all-terrain cranes and everything in between,” said Hillesheim. “We even perform a bit of small dirt work for a few customers where we use a mini-track hoe and a skid steer for trenching.”
But, he said, “Our forte at Erlinger is manned and maintained work where we send a crane operator out to a job site with most equipment each day.”
Hillesheim explained that Erlinger currently has 25 full-time operators and, to supplement that number when a job requires additional crane professionals, the company hires more from its Local 520 International Union of
Operating Engineers (IUOE) halls. Another key component of the crane company is the expert rigging services its team offers to handle and set heavy equipment and machinery, like HVAC units, as well as install pollution control systems and electrical transformers safely and efficiently.
As a result, according to Hillesheim, the company has “probably doubled in size twice” just in the last 10 years.

“We attribute that to Erlinger being family owned and dedicated to our work as we are here seven days a week to do whatever it takes,” Hillesheim said. “Just like my dad always said, ‘Don’t say no’ to customers whenever they call — day or night.”
Hillesheim added that another factor in Erlinger’s growth has been the solid increase in construction in the greater St. Louis area over the last several years.

“The manufacturing plants around here are always expanding and there has been a lot of maintenance done to existing buildings,” he said. “Plus, we do a lot of HVAC work, and we offer storage services at our lots here in Lebanon for those units. There are upwards of 100 air conditioners and air handling units in our yards at any given time.”

Propson Embraces Trend Toward Rotating Telehandlers
By Steve Kiskunas SPECIAL TO CEG
“We build homes, build up people and build dreams.”
Those words are at the heart of Propson Construction — a family-owned and operated business that prides itself on bringing its customers’ visions to life, enjoying the process and creating a great working atmosphere among employees.
The Wisconsin-based company specializes in framing large, custom residential homes, readying them for subcontractors to complete the shingles, heating, plumbing and other finishing touches.
As Dave Propson, owner of Propson Construction, puts it, “We’re giving the house its bones.”
Along the way, the company doesn’t shy away from a challenge.
Many of the large builds Propson Construction works on are on smaller lots, with limited access to the properties. At times, the crew may be almost completely cut off from the backside of the lot, a circumstance that requires expertise to navigate and a bit of ingenuity.
More importantly, it represents a growing trend of homebuilders embracing the flexibility that a rotating telehandler provides their construction site. It allows them to have fewer machines on their site and in their fleet, and it performs all of the critical tasks required in residential construction up to two stories and over a larger footprint.
Propson has owned and operated Manitou rotating telehandlers for more than 10 years — and he sees them as a unique benefit to a framing and homebuilding industry that evolves working habits to focus on worker wellbeing as well as productivity.
“We see a machine that increases our longevity of what we can do because we’re not working ourselves to the point of physical exhaustion — we’re going to make our money and we’re going to build houses with our brains and not with our backs.”
Central Role of Rotating Telehandler On Custom Home Build
“We have to find unique ways to do as much work with some foresight,” said Propson. “We put a lot of thought into executing everything that we can into larger components and setting those in place with equipment rather than moving materials using a strong back and weak mind. It’s a lot of just getting ahead of the issues rather than saying that we’ll figure it out later.”
Having the right equipment is critical, which is why Propson relies on the Manitou
MRT 3050 rotating telehandler that he purchased from dealer partner, Ideal Crane. It is among the many pieces of Manitou equipment the company has had over the years, due to what Propson cites as the brand’s durability and innovation.
The company recently took on a large build in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., — a 6,000-sq.ft. residential home directly on the channel. The design was intricate with a large pergola mezzanine that sits over the living structure on the backside, along with large screened in porches. The second story of the house required a significant amount of beam work to hold up everything.

Tadano AC 7.450-1 Performs Double Duty in Wisconsin
Tadano photo
The AC 7.450-1 was able to handle the panels without an issue. The critical pick was the final precast panel, which came in around 7,600 lbs. with rigging at a radius of 135 ft. and a height of around 380 ft.
Major Wisconsin contractor Findorff had a unique opportunity to showcase the versatile performance of a mobile crane recently during the construction of a new 44-story mixed-use building in Milwaukee.
The new property consists of more than 300 apartments, retail space and parking — built primarily with cast-in-place concrete and clad in window wall. The building totals 708 precast panels primarily set by a tower crane.
Once the tower crane was dismantled, Findorff needed to set eight precast panels located where the tower crane was tied into the building. A cost-saving and versatile solution was already on site — a Reynolds Crane Tadano AC 7.450-1 being used for the tower crane dismantle.
“We looked at many different options to setting the panels, most of which would require some kind of modification of interiors or high equipment costs,” said Kurt Erickson, Findorff supervisor.
“But since Reynolds had the 500ton Tadano all-terrain already there, we could extend the timeline by only 1 to 2 days to set these panels. The crane’s automatic boom/luffing angle adjustments to minimize deflection when the weight of the pick changed was perfect for this task due to us needing the hook less than one foot away from the structure most of the time. Radius, capacity and
most importantly height was not a concern at all due to the configurations available. And reconfiguring also seemed to take a much smaller crew and went faster.”

Nate Reynolds, Reynolds Crane executive vice president describes how the versatile Tadano crane came through in the clutch.
“A job site like this showcases exactly why we decided to add this new crane to our fleet. Two hundred and sixty three feet of main boom with max tip height of 419 feet is optimal to set tower cranes in the Midwest and then when you look further at the load charts, this crane fits perfectly for customer demand within our daily crane rental fleet. We are always listening to customers and learning how we can best support them.
“In this case, we were able to communicate with Findorff and planned to use the same mobile crane for multiple uses on the job, which in turn benefits everyone from our customers to the community by operating as efficiently as possible. We greatly appreciate our partnership with Findorff and look forward to many more projects with them and this crane.”

Overall, this impressive project represented a great team effort from a legacy pairing of this general contractor and crane rental and rigging company. Findorff and Reynolds worked seamlessly together, and the versatile AC 7.450-1 was able to tackle multiple tasks.
Erickson was very appreciative of Reynolds’ support.
“The resources, staff and crew with Reynolds are always very helpful in providing me with any information that I need to plan,” said Erickson. “Nate has always been willing to meet me on job sites to look over everything well before the task planning begins. It is always nice to just jump into the work and everyone understands the plan.”

Murphy Tractor’s Park City Facility Is Now Official John Deere Rebuild Center
The Park City, Kan., location of Murphy Tractor & Equipment Co. is now an official John Deere Certified Rebuild Center. This thorough dealer certification process ensures that large machine rebuilds are executed to the highest quality standards. To earn certification, Murphy Tractor’s Park City team completed a Powertrain rebuild on a 670GP motor grader, replacing all major and critical components and extending the motor grader to a second useful life.
With this milestone, Park City becomes the ninth Murphy Tractor location certified for the rebuild process. Other accredited Murphy locations are in Brunswick and Cincinnati, Ohio; Gering, Des Moines and Omaha, Neb.; Dodge City and Topeka, Kan.; and Kansas City, Mo.
The ReLife Program and rebuild process is about extending machine life to help customers meet their owning and operating cost expectations — without compromising the performance and reliability they expect from the John Deere name.
“A ReLife includes all major powertrain and hydraulic components that will give your machine warranty for an extended period of time,” Jordan Heinze, Park City service manager, said. “All other items including hoses, harnesses and electrical components are able to be added during the ReLife process. Park City has the facility and the best team for the job.”

MoDOT Selects Contractor for $600M Improve I-70 Project
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission (MHTC) has selected Improve 70 Alliance Joint Venture as the apparent best-value proposer and design-build contractor of the next project in MoDOT’s Improve I-70 Program. The joint venture team consists of Emery Sapp & Sons (ESS), Clarkson Construction, HNTB and Bartlett and West. Negotiations to finalize the contract are currently in progress.
Improve I-70: Warrenton to Wentzville is a $600 million fixedcost contract and is the largest project in MoDOT history. It will build a third lane in each direction and improve the stretch of Interstate 70 from Warrenton to I-64 in Wentzville beginning in spring 2025. The contract requirements also include the following additional improvements:
• Interchange and outer road improvements in Wright City
• Realignment at the railroad bridge on I-70 between Wentzville Parkway and Route Z
• Interchange improvements at I-70 and I-64/Route 61
• Add a third lane of travel to eastbound and westbound I-64 between I-70 and Route K
• Bridge replacement in Foristell
This project is the second in a series of projects which will widen and improve the I-70 corridor. Missouri’s FY2024 budget from the General Assembly signed into law by Gov. Parson provides $2.8 billion in general revenue for the costs to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 mi. of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville. The Warrenton to Wentzville project includes the Improve I-70 and additional legislatively designated general revenue funding. It also includes previously allocated funds in the state’s program for other I-70 and I-64 projects for a total contract cost of $600 million.
“Today’s contractor selection highlights MoDOT’s determination to continue to fulfill this generational opportunity to improve I70, which serves as a critical economic east-west corridor across Missouri,” said Dustin Boatwright, MHTC chairman. “This project
will not only improve I-70, but it also is an opportunity to make other necessary improvements to I70 and other routes and interchanges in the St. Charles and Warren County area. These improvements will continue to serve these growing communities for many years to come.”
The selected team, Improve 70 Alliance, was one of three shortlisted design-build teams. The win-
ning proposal highlights engineering and design endeavors set out before the teams and an understanding of the local, statewide and national importance of an improved I-70. The winning proposal includes:
• Constructing a third lane in each direction on I-70 from just east of the Route MM interchange in Warrenton to I-64 in Wentzville, including replacing the existing I-
el to eastbound and westbound I64 between I-70 and Route K.
• The team also has committed to keeping two lanes of travel open on I-70 in both directions during peak travel times.
“Improve 70 Alliance is honored to be awarded the largest project in the state’s history. This is a significant milestone for the state of Missouri as well as our companies,” said Robert Gillis, ESS cochief executive officer. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to bring our deep local roots, significant regional experience and diverse workforce to deliver exceptional results for the taxpayers of Missouri.”
The next steps include finalizing the contract and the contractor team will be doing more detailed design of the roadway and interchanges and the construction schedule with traffic control plans. MoDOT will host public information meetings in early 2025 as these details are ready. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2025 with an anticipated completion in late 2028. Caterpillar Updates Compactors to Optimize Performance
Caterpillar Inc. announced updates to the mid-sized asphalt compactor line. The Cat CB7, CB8, and CB10 asphalt compactors continue to build upon the proven performance of their predecessors with edge-management options, optional cab, optional split drums, and a new mapping display.
Comfort, Performance
Asphalt compaction can make or break a project and meeting the required density and smoothness specifications can be essential to maximizing profitability. In doing so, having operators that can stay alert for longer periods of time to perform effective rolling patterns that cover the entire surface can be a key to success.
Features like AM/FM Bluetooth Radio and the heated seat combine with spacious seating and legroom, unobstructed sight lines and climate control functions that can help operators perform at their best.
Making tight turns on hot asphalt can result in mat tearing that can lead to quality issues. The dual split-drum option on the front drum can help eliminate tears when maneuvering around obstacles or when compacting tight turns by reducing the speed of the inner drum half.
Asphalt compaction can make or break a project, and meeting the required density and smoothness specifications can be essential to maximizing profitability. In doing so, having operators that can stay alert for longer periods of time to perform effective rolling patterns that cover the entire surface can be a key to success.
Edge Management Options
Proper management of unconfined edges can help optimize density and lead to better road quality. The vertical edge created by the cut-off wheel helps provide a stable vertical face for joint matching on the next paving pass. The bevel edge options provide sloped profiles for smoother transitions on and off the paved surface.
Three versions are available to help contractors meet job site requirements.
Compaction Control Mapping Display
The new mapping display provides an enhanced on-screen visual for easier recognition and touchscreen capability for simplified setup. Cat Compact helps operators visualize the coverage area while recording pass-count and temperature data.
The system utilizes infrared temperature sensors and GPS mapping to keep the operator informed of current mat temperatures, machine position, pass-count and pass coverage. This intuitive system enhances nighttime performance, while also capturing data for future process analysis and quality control documentation.
When combined with drum edge and drum surface lighting, Cat Compact helps extend the workday and increase daily production.
Deliver Quality While Making Turns
Making tight turns on hot asphalt can result in mat tearing that can lead to quality issues. The dual split-drum option on the front drum can help eliminate tears when maneuvering around obstacles or when compacting tight turns by reducing the speed of the inner drum half. The split drum option can be a great solution for parking lots, driveway approaches and other applications that require frequent turning.

The new solutions are currently compatible with OEM CAN-based systems and will be expanded to include compatibility with additional aftermarket systems.
“One of the standout optional features of the solutions is the Virtual Ski intelligent software,” Lodge said.
Expanding on the capabilities of the company’s SmoothRide road resurfacing solution, Virtual Ski simplifies
“Our mobile road scanner easily creates a 3D model of the existing road surface, which can be sent to the machine using our Sitelink3D cloud solution,” Lodge said. “Simply scan and mill or lay the base layer and let the milling machine or the paver do the surface design job instead of all that data having to go back to the office for the design work. This results in the elimination of the cumbersome physical ski, the production of a smooth surface more quickly with less effort, and significant time savings. Thanks to the flexible, digital calculation, which follows the road direction even in tight curves, the overall quality and lifespan of the resurfaced road is improved.”
Another advancement for the portfolio is the company’s newest RD-MC road construction machine control solution, which can now be utilized in areas without satellite reception by leveraging an LPS solution, offering precise positioning when working in challenging GNSS coverage areas, further expanding a contractor’s capabilities.
The new solutions were announced at World of Asphalt 2024 in Nashville.

Trimble Introduces Roadworks Paving Control Platform
Trimble announced the availability of the Trimble Roadworks Paving Control Platform for Mills and Cold Planers, extending the functionality of Trimble’s next-generation, 3D paving control system.
Trimble Roadworks for Mills and Cold Planers runs on an Android operating system and enables operators to precisely control cutting depth of the mill or cold planer, according to project design.
The intuitive system allows operators to meet the most demanding specs on the most complex projects, minimizing overcutting and creating a smoother surface on airport runways, highways, racetracks and other projects that require optimum smoothness. The 3D design is displayed to the machine operator showing areas that are on, above or below ideal grade, comparing the actual drum position and slope with the digital design. The platform automatically guides the milling drum to cut the ideal depth and slope without string lines or manual adjustments.
“Complex paving projects such as airport runways and heavily-traveled highways have some of the tightest specifications in the construction industry,” said Kevin Garcia, general manager of Civil Specialty Solutions at Trimble. “Trimble
Roadworks for milling and cold planing takes both the guesswork and the re-work out of milling, making it easy for operators to mill precisely to a 3D design elevation. The benefits of this extend throughout the entire paving process, creating less work for pavers, decreasing asphalt usage, and increasing overall surface smoothness.”
The milling and cold planing software features the same user interface as existing Trimble Roadworks applications, with intuitive graphics, natural interactions and gestures, and self-discovery features, shortening training time for operators. The system is compatible with Trimble WorksManager software, which manages data transfer and tracks construction technology equipment across job sites, and with Trimble Business Center software, which is used to create 3D milling plans and comprehensive quality and production reports.
Availability
Trimble Roadworks for Mills and Cold Planers is available now for customers worldwide through the SITECH distributor channel. For more information, visit civilconstruction.trimble.com/roadworksmilling.

Glenn Eder
The American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) announced Glenn Eder as the 2024 winner of the HartmannHirschman-Egan Award. This award recognizes individuals or organizations for unparalleled commitment, dedication, participation and leadership in the concrete pavement community.
Eder retired from infrastructure product supplier American Highway in 2022. From 1986 to 1998 he owned and was the president of Contractors Steel & Accessories, located in the Chicago suburbs. After his company was purchased by Ersco Corporation in 1998, he served as the vice president and division manager of paving supplies until 2007.
Eder went on to work for another load transfer manufacturer, Block Heavy & Highway, from 2007 until 2011, when that company was acquired by Dayton Superior. Eder made his name within the Dayton Superior organization from 2011 to 2015, where he served as the sales manager of paving products.
In 2015 he transitioned from Dayton Superior to JC Supply, growing its business as the vice president of marketing and business development until JC supply was purchased by American Highway in December 2020. In 2021, Eder took over the role of vice president of technical sales.
“Glenn was a valued member of the
ACPA board of directors for many years and is considered a trusted advisor and friend. Once again, the members have chosen to honor a gentleman and a legend in our industry,” said Laura O’Neill Kaumo, president and CEO of the American Concrete Pavement Association.
“The more than 40 years of contribution, value, and fantastic personality that Glenn has brought to the entire concrete paving industry make him more than deserving of this award. Glenn and I worked together at different times across our careers, my first interaction with him being at Ersco, where I was his salesman from Dayton Superior. Throughout my career I have considered Glenn a mentor, and our business relationship has grown into a personal friendship,” said Ron Meskis, CEO, American Highway.
The Hartmann-Hirschman-Egan Award award was first presented in 1968. At that time, it was named in honor of Harold W. Hartmann, the Association’s secretary-treasurer from 1964 until 1974. In 1987, Robert E. Hirschman’s name was added in recognition of his term as the association’s chairman (then president) in 1967, as well as his tenure as secretary-treasurer from 1975 to 1987. In 2007, the name of Edward A. Egan was added for his service as ACPA’s chairman in 1986, as well as secretary-treasurer from 1988 to 2007.

Far South Side Sees Sneak Peek of CTA Red Line Extension
After hiring a team to build the project in August, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and contractor Walsh-VINCI held a celebration of the project’s progress toward groundbreaking, expected in late 2025.
On Oct. 25, the CTA welcomed about 75 residents and businesses from the Far South Side to the Red Line Extension (RLE) Fall Community Meet and Greet Event. Held at the site of the future Michigan Red Line station on E. 116th Street and S. Michigan Ave., CTA and RLE contractor Walsh-VINCI Transit Community Partners welcomed RLE project supporters.
To showcase what the new extension will look like, the contractor displayed for the community a 43-ton, 10-ft.-long concrete bridge segment, the type of segment that will be used to build the Red Line Extension Project. The segment was manufactured for the CTA’s separate Red and Purple (RPM) Phase One Project now under way on the North Side.
“The Red Line Extension Project is coming to the Far South Side of Chicago, and we are excited to share with the community what they have to look forward to,” said Dorval R. Carter Jr., CTA president. “As a native South Sider, I am proud to deliver on CTA’s promise of new affordable, convenient and reliable Red Line service, as well as creating a wealth of job and training opportunities to residents.”
ties with CTA and the RLE Project. The project is expected to create an estimated 12,512 RLE construction jobs and 59,800 jobs indirectly created because of the construction project.
CTA predicts that an estimated 25,000 additional jobs will become available upon project completion because of the new access to transit for the Far South Side.
Participants also received pumpkins, taffy apples and specialty hot cocoa from Catered By Kish.

Red Line Extension Project Overview
The RLE project is a 5.5-mi. extension of the Red Line starting at 95th Street Terminal to the vicinity of 130th Street and includes building four new, accessible stations near 103rd Street, 111th Street, Michigan Avenue and 130th Street, each of which is expected to include bus, bike, pedestrian and parking facilities. The project also will build a new rail yard and related rail facilities near 120th Street to
improve operational efficiency for the entire Red Line and CTA system. Construction is expected to start in late 2025 and be completed by 2030.
The Red Line Extension will provide a new, more direct connection to the Red Line. Once the extension opens, it is expected to provide up to 30 minutes of time savings to riders traveling from the future 130th Station to the Loop. The project also will generate long-lasting economic benefits for the Far South Side via small business and workforce/career opportunities with RLE and CTA, as well as new economic development in the project area.

Case Supports Team Rubicon Hurricane Helene, Milton Relief
In the wake of Hurricane Helene and Milton’s devastating impact to the southeastern region of the United States, veteran-led humanitarian organization Team Rubicon is sending volunteer response teams to help with the cleanup.
To support the effort, Case Construction Equipment, a brand of CNH, is providing essential equipment such as compact track loaders with grapple attachments, wheel loaders and crawler excavators to help Team Rubicon with the heavy-duty work of clearing trees, mud and debris.
As part of a recently launched CNH Disaster Response program, Case is dedicating six compact track loaders with grapple attachments as a fleet that will be devoted to Team Rubicon efforts. The CNH Disaster Response program is a new effort designed to quickly deploy equipment to disasterstricken communities.
In addition, Case is deploying equipment to communities in need through its extensive dealer network. Case dealer Hills Machinery is loaning an additional three machines along with service support materials like hydraulic fluid and parts.
To date, Case and the Case dealer network have loaned 10 machines to the effort and is in daily communication with Team Rubicon
to address needs as they arise.
“Building communities, and rebuilding them when disaster strikes, is core to what we do at Case,” said Terry Dolan, vice president — North America, Case Construction Equipment. “We’ve been longtime supporters of the humanitarian relief work that Team Rubicon provides and our dealers, like Hills
Machinery, are always at the ready to help.”
When it comes to disaster response, volunteers from the veteran-led nonprofit Team Rubicon are some of the first to arrive. Also known as “Greyshirts,” Team Rubicon volunteers include sawyers and heavy equipment operators who clear trees and debris from roads so emergency crews can access
impacted communities.
“Hurricanes Helene and Milton definitely created a tremendous amount of need,” said Jeff Byard, vice president of operations, Team Rubicon. “We’ve already served 45plus communities across five states and have multiple response operations in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas.
“Our strengths as an organization are our deep ties within local communities and the nationwide network of Greyshirt volunteers who provide no-cost services to better the lives of disaster survivors.”
In addition to deploying machinery for use during disasters, CNH and its charitable foundation over the years have supported Team Rubicon’s mission by providing financial support. Also, Case and the Case dealer network have made space available to execute critical heavy equipment operating training for Team Rubicon volunteers.
In the past two years, Case has expanded training support from one to nine locations across the United States and Canada.

Southern Illinois’ Erlinger Crane Service Reaches Beyond Midwest
from page 8
To store all that HVAC equipment, not to mention the many different cranes and other machines it owns to carry out its work, Erlinger maintains three different yard spaces within the industrial park in Lebanon where its offices are located, about 30 mi. east of St. Louis.
“We have three acres at our main facility; two acres at a different site; and an additional three acres at a new lot that we just purchased last year that is fenced in and being filled right now in preparation for a 2025 project in St. Louis,” Hillesheim said.
The company’s day-to-day work radius extends 200 mi. from the metropolitan region, he noted, although Erlinger currently has a crane working on a project in New Mexico that is a bare rental, meaning that the contractor is operating it rather than one of Hillesheim’s people. Those types of rentals make up approximately 15 to 20 percent of Erlinger’s business, he said.
As far as the equipment brands it rents, the company has long carried Manitowoc and Grove machines but is also transitioning over to the Japanese-manufactured Tadano line of cranes, as well.
“We learned that we liked the Tadanos for their reliability and cost of maintenance,” said Hillesheim. “We work with a few area distributors to purchase machines, with our primary dealers being RTL Equipment in Iowa, and CraneWorks out of St. Louis, both of which are Tadano distributors. Each one also does maintenance on the equipment for us.”
Another sign of Erlinger’s surge in popularity among contractors is the fact that its crane fleet has more than doubled in the last 10 years.
Crane, Rigging Specialists Must Be Highly Trained
Most major construction projects will likely require the services of a company like Erlinger to deliver cranes to its work site to lift heavy objects and components safely and expertly.
If a contractor in the St. Louis region does not employ its own operators/rigging specialists for the work, Hillesheim’s team is the ideal company to call. His crane rigging professionals are adept at sizing up the job at hand and drawing up a plan to perform each lift properly. By analyzing the weight and the dimensions of the load, along with its center of gravity, and how high and how far the load needs to be moved, the rigging pros at Erlinger often make the job look routine.
“All of our people are operators by trade and most of them carry a certificate for signaling and rigging,” he said. “We only have two guys that are lift directorcertified and that is becoming more common nowadays.
“Every job has a different scope of work,” he added. “We try to supply 100 percent of the rigging at each job. We have anything from half-inch steel chokers up to nylon slings rigged rated for 100,000 pounds, and anything from a 4-foot spreader bar to 24-foot spreader bars capable of lifting 100,000 pounds. If we don’t have all the rigging we need, we’ll get it.”
To operate cranes and handle rigging properly, the Erlinger team — all of whom are members of the IOUE — learned most of their specialized skills at the Local IOUE training centers.
“Any training for new equipment that comes in our facility, though, we will do here on site,” according to Hillesheim.
Now, though, Hillesheim said that the biggest problem facing Erlinger is how to keep its workforce vibrant by enticing more young people to get into wellpaying trades like crane operation.
When asked if he had begun to mine the area trade and technical schools to attract the next generation of operators and rigging specialists, he said, “We strictly hire out of our Local 520 IUOE halls, and right now there are not a lot of people on the list. But it is on our radar to work with technical schools to get some mechanics in our shop.”
Hillesheim Brothers Maintain FirmÊs Family Atmosphere
As a teenager, Hillesheim and his brother, Holden, both worked in the Erlinger shop during the summers, but the older sibling had initially decided working there was not what he wanted to do long term.
As happens to many young people, though, the career path that Hillesheim took made a few twists and turns before pointing him in the right direction.
“I thought I wanted to get into machining, so I attended Southwestern Illinois College in this area,” he said. “Later, I got a job as a CNC mill operator at a company in St. Louis, but after six months doing that, I realized it was not for me, so I got into a union laborer’s hall, Local 397, and did that for a year. Eventually, I realized I wanted to work for Dad again in the crane world.”
Now, even though his father generally spends his time in Florida from November to April, his son noted, Rich Hillesheim remains a critical resource for his sons, with whom he speaks most days.
“In the summer, he stops by the shop periodically, but as far as day-to-day management goes, he is really out of it altogether,” Hillesheim said. “He has allowed us free rein to run the company as we see fit. That includes keeping the business moving forward on a path to more success.”
Erlinger today has a total of 30 employees, one of whom, Brent McKinnon, was recently hired as a crane rental salesman and, in addition, given social media and marketing roles within the company after a few short weeks. His new duties come after 15 years as a crane operator, and 20 years running heavy equipment in general.

Illinois DOT Celebrates Completion of I-55 Interchange Near Joliet, Shorewood
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) recently hosted an event celebrating the completion of a $93.5 million project to reconstruct a new interchange at I-55 and Illinois 59, which also incorporated other highway corridor improvements.
Located between the towns of Joliet and Shorewood, the project converted an interchange with partial access between I-55 and Illinois 59 into a full diverging-diamond design to enhance traffic flow and safety throughout the area.
Prior to rebuilding the interchange, only northbound I-55 could exit to northbound Illinois 59 and from southbound Illinois 59 to southbound I-55. Now, due to the new interchange design, both directions of I-55 can access both directions of Illinois 59 and vice versa.
Additionally, the project relocated and reconstructed East Frontage Road; providing necessary distance from the interchange, with auxiliary lanes added to I-55 between Illinois 59 and U.S. 52 improving safety, boosting efficiency and reducing conflict points by better accommodating vehicles entering and leaving the interstate.
“The completion of the interchange at I-55 and Illinois 59 will soon provide a safer and more efficient transit experience for the Will County community

while simultaneously boosting the local economy,” said Gov. J.B. Pritzker in a statement. “This milestone marks another step forward in our mission to improve safety, mobility and quality of life throughout Illinois.”
“The new interchange with Illinois
59 combined with other improvements to I-55 will greatly improve the flow of people, goods and commerce through the region while setting the stage for more jobs and economic development,” said Illinois DOT Secretary Omer Osman. “This project is a longterm investment that makes Will County an even better place to work, play, grow your business and raise a family.”
Other components of the project include the modernization of the Illinois 59 intersection with Seil Road; the addition of new sidewalks and connections to the existing local system of trails, including improved pedestrian and bicycle access across I-55; new lighting, modernized traffic signals; and the construction of noise/retaining walls along I-55.
The Illinois DOT noted that, as construction of the project winds down, work will continue on the multiuse path, installation of a new traffic signal at Illinois 59 and Seil Road, landscaping and other miscellaneous items into early 2025.
The agency added that this interchange reconstruction effort is part of its overall I-55 at Illinois 59 Access Project, funded in turn by the “Rebuild Illinois” capital program passed in June 2019.

Volvo CE Cites Overall Good Margins in Q3 2024 Earnings
Lower volumes in Europe and North America for the third quarter — when compared to the very high levels of last year — have caused a drop in overall net sales for Volvo CE. However, it has maintained overall good margins despite this slower demand and has overseen a growth in the China market.
This quarter also has seen the company support customers by balancing today’s challenges with its accelerated focus on transformation.
In Q3 2024, net sales decreased by 23 percent to SEK 18,809 M, compared to the high earnings of SEK 24,296 M for the same quarter last year. When adjusted for currency movements net sales decreased by 20 percent, of which net sales of machines fell by 24 percent, while service sales increased by 2 percent, once more reflecting the market’s growing interest in digital solutions.
However, net order intake has risen slightly, caused largely by a 59 percent increase in South America and a 44 percent increase in Europe, strengthened also by a more modest rise in all other regions except North America. Global deliveries were down from last year due to the continued lower market demand and reduction of inventories at the dealerships in Europe and North America, partly offset by increased deliveries for the SDLG brand in China.
Leading Transformation
Melker Jernberg, head of Volvo CE, said, “We are living in turbulent times and, like other companies, are feeling the effects of a market slowdown. But we are maintaining our leading position with a strong portfolio, the continued roll-out of new products and services and our steadfast commitment to the industry transformation.
“The ambitions we have set out towards building the world we want to live in remain
unchanged and we take pride in working together to balance the priorities of today with our confident vision for tomorrow.” Volvo CE continued the market launch of new and upgraded models of its most important products and services in key markets in Asia and North America. This included an updated range of the new generation excavator portfolio, as well as the highly anticipated L120 Electric wheel loader.
The quarter also saw the inauguration of a new wheel loader facility in Arvika, Sweden, designed to support the production of electric wheel loaders at the plant. This is one of a number of global investments made to drive industry transformation across production facilities and markets worldwide.
Market Development
Compared to 2023, the total machine market contracted in Q3, largely due to a slowdown in Europe — a 25 percent drop from the historically high levels of last year, driven by a combination of low business confidence and a saturated end market. As a consequence of normalizing replenishment of dealer fleets and somewhat lower end customer demand, North America also came down 9 percent from very high levels in 2023.
Meanwhile Asia excluding China was slightly down overall by just 2 percent, despite market growth in India, Indonesia and the Middle East, while markets such as Turkey experienced declines partly driven by revised government infrastructure investments.
In contrast, the Chinese market grew 5 percent on the back of governmental policies to stimulate the real estate market, while good demand in Brazil, Peru and Chile saw a similar 5 percent increase in market development for South America.

Felling Conducts Auction to Benefit ‘Backing the Blue Line’
Felling Trailers Inc. conducted its 12th annual online auction of an FT-3 drop deck utility trailer to benefit a non-profit organization: Backing the Blue Line.
A winning bid of $6,650.00 won the auction that ended the evening of Sept. 11th. The bid winner is a follower and dedicated supporter of the annual Trailer for a Cause auctions, Joe Welch of Caledonia, Minn.
Welch, a construction and farm equipment dealer, has followed Felling Trailers’ Trailer for a Cause auctions for several years and was the bid winner in the 2022 auction that benefitted Eagle’s Healing Nest.
“I have followed the Trailer for a Cause auctions for about five years. The organizations the auctions benefit are very good ones. The Felling employees have chosen very good causes to support,” said Welch. “Being able to help with this support is very rewarding for me. We need these guys [law enforcement] out there; anyone that has to go to work with a bulletproof vest needs our support and respect.”
A few weeks after the auction closed, arrangements were made for Welch to come and pick up his new trailer. It will be used a bit for business and pleasure.
“I am very appreciative of the work law enforcement does for us, the sacrifices they make, and the fact that they never know what the next call will bring,” said Welch.
The 2024 Trailer for a Cause FT-3 utility trailer was painted a custom grey with a blue line and the Backing the Blue Line emblem. Suppliers of Felling Trailers had joined in to support Backing the Blue Line by sponsoring the construction of the trailer, from lighting to tires to decking.
The 2024 Trailer for a Cause sponsors are Trans-Texas, PPG, Dexter, Sealco, Peterson, Industrial Wood (Blackwood), Demco, and Pacific Rim. Felling Trailers wants to help generate awareness about the valuable work that Backing the Blue Line does for officers and their families through their various programs and support services. The online auction ran for nine days, from Monday, Sept. 2nd at noon CST through Wednesday, Sept. 11th at noon CST, ending with Welch’s winning bid.
One hundred percent of the $6,650 benefited Backing the Blue Line.
Two weeks after Welch had picked up the 2024 Trailer for a Cause, Backing the Blue Lines’ Gretchen Gifford, VP/executive board of directors, accompanied by her husband, Officer Gifford, and son, made the trip to Sauk Centre to accept the donation check. The Giffords met with Felling Trailers’ Owners Brenda Jennissen and Bonnie Radjenovich to present them with the check for $6,650.
“There are a lot of great organizations out there. It is truly humbling to be the

recipient of your fundraiser this year,” said Gretchen Gifford. “It’s been a tough couple of years for the law enforcement community; we’ve had five fallen officers in the last thirteen months. We [Backing the Blue Line] provided blue memorial roses that had been requested for the funeral of an officer who died in the line of duty this past weekend.”
“Speaking with a Minnesota National Guardsman and State Law Enforcement officer’s widow, it was evident the significant support Backing the Blue Line provided her and their son. She said BtBL has been there since day one and continues to provide emotional support, cards on holidays, and
gifts for their son just to show they care,” said Brenda Jennissen, Felling Trailers CEO/president.
“It’s nice to be remembered. We are blessed and fortunate to be able to support them in a way that is meaningful. We are there for all the moments we can be, providing injury baskets when officers are hurt in the line of duty and sending cards on holidays and important dates. We celebrate the good moments too, onesies for members with new babies and events that allow for the meeting and socializing among wives who live and understand our lives, as well as encourage continued relationships and friendships,” said Gifford.
Additionally, the group offers a forum for law enforcement wives or other women in a long-term committed relationship with a Minnesota law enforcement officer to find and provide hope and support for each other through friendships, networking, discussion and service as they navigate a unique lifestyle. Jennifer Whiteford, the founder of the group, recognized a need for wives to be able to share their experiences with each other.

ALL’s HighwayMAX Trailers Lend Big Assist After Recent Acquisition
When ALL Erection & Crane Rental, flagship branch and member of the ALL Family of Companies, provided heavy lift equipment to dismantle a 170,000-lb. industrial bolt press in Northeast Ohio, it also was able to offer a secondary, value-added service: delivery of that same massive piece of machinery to its destination in Alsip, Ill.
What enabled the transport service was ALL’s recent acquisition of two Faymonville HighwayMAX trailers.
The HighwayMAX is a nine-axle extendable highway trailer with nine hydraulically steered pendle-axles and a legal payload of up to 170,000 lb. (249,000-lb. technical payload). Axle spacing is adjustable by up to 22.5 ft. between each three-axle group, and each axle steers independently at 60 degrees for ultimate maneuverability in tight spaces. All axles are liftable.
“We initially purchased the trailers to haul tracks for two of our own newly acquired crawler cranes, the Liebherr LR 11000 and Liebherr LR 1800,” said Brian Meek, sales representative of ALL. “But we soon realized these trailers could offer something unique to our customers, and perhaps even open new markets for us in heavy haul transport.”
Faymonville is a European company, known for blending heavy industrial manufacturing expertise with technical know-how and cutting-edge technology. Its accompanying software package allows loads and trailer configurations to be planned in advance, much the same way 3-D lift planning for cranes enables ALL to design, plot, and practice lifts in the virtual world.
“We’re able to simulate the load to make sure the axles are carrying an even amount of weight,” said Meek. “Because axle spacing and load limits vary by state, the HighwayMAX provides ultimate flexibility.”
ALL was first contacted to provide a 360-ton Liebherr LTM 1300-6.2 all terrain crane to remove the bolt press, when inspiration struck to also offer heavy haul services to transport the 25ft. by 12-ft. piece to the Illinois factory that purchased the equipment.
On the maiden voyage across parts of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, the load required special permitting and, at times, even police escorts. ALL was already well-versed in arranging these requirements due to decades of transporting its own cranes via an in-house

trucking division that includes all the logistics support that entails.
Since that first journey, other heavyhaul jobs have come in to ALL just through word-of-mouth.
“Faymonville trailers are still fairly rare in the U.S.,” said Jimmy Hill, logistics manager of ALL. “Once people see what they’re capable of, they’re interested in trying them out.”
By combining technology with practical development, quality manufacturing, and innovative features, the new trailers offer great versatility, payload capacity, maneuverability and quick mobilization.
This versatility is expected to earn it many fans.
“It will be in demand for transporting large industrial equipment, as well as work at steel mills and wind farms,” said Hill. “For many of our customers, they will find that anywhere they
thought they needed a Goldhofer, they can use the HighwayMAX.”
Hill expects the trailers to find many uses for ALL’s new and existing customers.
Because every axle on the Faymonville HighwayMAX steers independently, the resulting tighter turning radius enables it to maneuver in more restricted areas than a traditional trailer, especially one of its size. That makes it a welcome tool within the footprint of plants and refineries.
“We’ll be able to build crawler cranes in even more constricted areas,” said Hill. “It’s also ideal for making multiple onsite moves due to the trailer’s high maneuverability. The ability to adjust height will also be attractive to plant managers.”

Crews Replace Paddy’s Run Pump Station in Louisville
Work officially began in July 2023, with the substantial completion date now scheduled for March 2027.
By Cindy Riley CEG CORRESPONDENT
In Louisville, Ky., construction crews are tasked with replacing a flood pump station (FPS) with a new facility. The roughly $230 million project will more than double the existing FPS pumping capacity from the current 875 million gal. per day (gpd) to 1.9 billion.
“The original Paddy’s Run Flood Pump Station went into service in 1953,” said Brandon Flaherty, Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) project manager. “It’s outdated and currently operating with original parts that have been repaired and replaced with custom-made pieces. There are no ‘off-the-shelf’ options.”
Louisville MSD, which is responsible for wastewater treatment, stormwater drainage and flood protection, is overseeing the effort.
Flaherty said the upgrade of Paddy’s Run pump station is considered a crucial first step in the repair, rehabilitation and reconstruction of features within Louisville’s flood protection system.
“The Paddy’s Run Flood Pump Station is part of a system that protects approximately 216,000 people, 87,000 structures and $33 billion in property across a wide swath of west and southwest Louisville. As the risk, severity and frequency of storms and flooding have increased over the years, this station has become increasingly at risk of failure.
“This project requires close collaboration

and coordination with Louisville MSD and the US Army Corp of Engineers,” said Flaherty. “The existing flood protection levee and pump station systems must remain operational while the new facilities are constructed in an extremely limited footprint. The bottom elevation of the new pump station is more than 80 feet below the top of the adjacent levee.”
Flaherty said the risk for flooding in the West Louisville area is a constant concern.
“Louisville is a river city, situated on the Ohio River. The western part of the city is on a bend in the river with shoreline on three sides. In both 1937 and 1946, this section of the city was devastated.”
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, US Army
Corps of Engineers Col. L. Reyn Mann, U.S. Congressman Morgan McGarvey and Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg joined MSD executive director Tony Parrott for the August 2023 groundbreaking.
“Paddy’s Run has been doing a 21st-century job with 1950s technology, staying in operation due to nearly constant maintenance by our dedicated employees,” said Parrott. “With the increased frequency of severe weather events, it’s imperative that the facility is able to effectively and efficiently handle the environmental demands of our times.”
The new structure will feature eight pumps, along with modern electrical and instrumentation controls. The replacement of the existing Paddy’s Run FPS aligns with the federal government’s Justice40 priorities, ensuring that at least 40 percent of federal climate investments go directly to frontline communities most affected by poverty and pollution.
MSD obtained a $13 million cleaner water grant under the American Rescue Plan Act to assist in funding the crucial project. Congress also approved $1 million in federal funds allowing USACE to begin design work on urgently needed upgrades to electrical equipment dating to the 1950s for the Flood Protection System. MSD will receive $28.89 million in funding from the State Revolving Fund, with $1.6 million in forgivable loans.
Ulliman Schuttee serves as construction manager for the design-build effort.
“Ulliman Schuttee has a proven track record of design-build partnerships with MSD and other agencies as a valued partner for critical infrastructure projects,” said Flaherty. “They are efficient, reliable and

Gov. Holcomb, INDOT Award $139.7M Through Community Crossings Grants
Gov. Eric J. Holcomb and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) gathered Nov. 7 at the Pike County Courthouse in Petersburg with cities, towns and counties from across southwest Indiana receiving portions of the nearly $140 million awarded through the Community Crossings matching grant program, a component of Gov. Holcomb’s Next Level Roads program.
“Community Crossings has been an annual highlight over the years,” said Holcomb. “The fact that nearly 14,000 miles of road and over 200 local bridges have been replaced or rehabilitated through this program since 2017 is simply astonishing, in addition to countless economic and quality of life benefits in hundreds of communities across Indiana.”
Communities submitted applications for funding during a highly competitive call for projects in July. Funding for Community Crossings comes from the state’s local road and bridge matching grant fund. The Community Crossings ini-
tiative has provided more than $1.8 billion in state matching funds for local road improvement projects since its start in 2016.
“This program has impacted communities in all 92 Indiana counties, most more than once,” said INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith. “I want to recognize all of the local agencies who have participated over time for their hard work and dedication to improving their local transportation networks.” State legislators identified longterm funding for Community Crossings as part of House Enrolled Act 1002, passed by the General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Holcomb in 2017.
For a list of all 223 communities receiving matching funds in the 2024 fall call for projects visit in.gov/indot/doing-business-withindot/files/2024-1-CCMGAwardee-List_pdfweb.pdf?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery.

Manitou Rotating Telehandler Is Valuable Asset for Propson
“On this build, we’re essentially chasing the main structure from interior to exterior to hold it all up. And accomplishing that is a culmination of dealing with the builder, the designers of our components and the homeowner to make sure that they’re still getting what they want so that at the end it looks right. And if it is right, it’ll stand up forever,” said Propson.
The Manitou rotating telehandler, which has a lifting height of 97 ft. 5 in. and a lifting
capacity of 10,998 lbs., was just the right solution for the job for several reasons — among them its size and versatility, and its ability to play three roles in one on a construction site: a material handler, a work platform and a jib.
“One of the nicest capabilities of the Manitou MRT is its small footprint. We had that machine stuck up in the front corner of the building for two weeks. We could work around it. It wasn’t in our way, yet that machine can work around the entire proper-
Value of Trust, Partnership
Both Manitou and Ideal Crane are companies Propson has long trusted.
The equipment he has had from Manitou, including the MRT rotating telehandler, offers him the reliability and versatility he needs day in and day out.
“We haven’t had issues. We don’t have downtime,” he said. “They offer excellent solutions-based equipment. Adding to that, Ideal Crane provides us with the support we need.”
“We understand what we mean to our customers’ businesses, and we understand what they mean to our business,” said Kalhagen. “We know if they have a machine down it’s affecting them getting their jobs done.”
Propson appreciates this commitment.
“With Ideal Crane as a partner, we’re not worried about if we have an issue, will they fix it? If we have an issue, will we be down for a month? Ideal has given us such good support with anything that’s ever come up that we’re up and running within a day or two,” Propson said. “Ideal Crane is good at what they do and that builds us up. We enjoy working with like-minded people like them because they are solution-based people, too.”
ty,” he said. “So, it’s nice to have something that can do so much with no real negative impact on the things around it.”
Propson added that he and the crew were able to place the telehandler’s attachments in one area, set off to the side, because the machine provided enough reach and accessibility to get to them.
Among those attachments were a large extendable jib winch that provided depth of reach when needed, along with a PT 1500, which is a 3,300-lb. jib winch. The company
also had 360-degree continuous rotation forks and a 16-ft. collapsible man basket. Combined, these attachments make the rotating telehandler a true multi-purpose machine.
“With the Manitou, we have one machine that can accomplish many different applications on a construction site. So rather than having a self-propelled lift and a crane and a couple of telehandlers, we have one machine that’s capable of doing all that with a three-

The 8-cu.-yd. spreader works on dump trucks and flatbeds with a minimum 10-ft. bed and 33,000 lb. gross vehicle weight (GVW). The unit is available with electric and hydraulic, auger and chain drivelines.

Experts Recommend Accurately Tracking Depreciation
DEPRECIATION from page 1
accurate picture of their balance sheet. That picture, in turn, shows the accurate value of the equipment that the contractor owns and the assets the business controls.
As you grow your business, make sure you have a good depreciation strategy, advises construction accounting software provider CrewCost.
Taking Different Depreciation Tact
Bonus depreciation can lower taxable income for the year you purchase and deploy equipment, freeing up capital for operations or even business reinvestment.
A “departure from the traditional depreciation method,” as Volvo Construction Equipment describes it, the rate was 100 percent for several years.
With the phase-out, in 2025 the rate will be 40 percent; in 2026, 20 percent. Starting in 2027 and thereafter, the rate is zero.
“Just remember, a company can take both Section 179 and bonus depreciation allowances, but Section 179 must be applied first,” noted Volvo.
As a result, any qualified property purchased over the set limit of $1,220,000 may then be taken in
bonus depreciation.
“So, it’s great for businesses that spend more than the Section 179 spending limit,” said the construction equipment manufacturer.
In Canada, the phase-out period has begun for property that becomes available for use after 2023.
Eric Wallace, CPA of accounting information service CCH, describes the provision as “an additional first-year depreciation allowance.”
He notes that the bonus depreciation rate for qualified property acquired before Sept. 28, 2017, and placed in service before 2018 is 50 percent.
“A taxpayer may elect not to claim bonus depreciation for any class of property,” said Wallace. “The election is made annually on a statement filed with Form 4562, Depreciation and Amortization.”
Also known as special depreciation, or IRC §168(k) depreciation, is technically a depreciation deduction, he said.
“Like other depreciation deductions, it counts toward accumulated depreciation.”
It reduces the basis for purposes of determining gain or loss when an asset is sold and is subject to section 1245 and section 1250 recapture.
With the gradual phase-out of the bonus depreciation tax provision, contractors might consider investing in new machinery while the deduction rate is above 50 percent.
There are many nuances, Wallace said.
Bonus depreciation applies to property placed in service after Dec. 31, 2007, and before Jan. 1, 2027.
Qualified Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System MACRS property is property with a recovery period of 20 years or less.
Used property acquired and placed in service after Sept. 27, 2017, also may qualify for bonus
claimed on real or personal property, i.e. section 1245 or section 1250 property.
• Section 179 only applies to section 1245 property with a limited exception for qualified real property.
• Section 179 claimed on section 1250 property is subject to recapture under the section 1245 recapture rules (full recapture to extent of gain).
• Bonus depreciation claimed on section 1250 property is subject to section 1250 recapture (recapture in excess of straight-line to extent of gain).
“If the bonus rate is less than 100 percent, taxpayers should apply section 179 first to expense assets with the longest recovery period,” said Wallace.
depreciation, said Wallace.
“A taxpayer must claim bonus depreciation unless an election out is made,” said Wallace. “Generally, a taxpayer who fails to claim bonus depreciation must file an accounting method change.”
The depreciation amount is the applicable bonus rate and the original cost of the property, reduced by a percentage of certain tax credits claimed on the property and a section 179 allowance.
Bonus Depreciation Versus Section 179
As CCH explains it, taxpayers can claim the section 179 deduction for the cost of most tangible property that is bought for use in a business. The section 179 deduction is an expense allowance on certain qualifying property purchased for use in a business.
Though both rules allow deductions on all or a significant portion of costs, they have numerous important differences, notes CCH:
• Bonus depreciation applies to property used in a trade or business or for production of income.
• Section 179 only applies to property used in an active trade or business.
• Bonus depreciation generally applies to MACRS property that has a recovery period of 20 years or less.
• In the case of section 179, the recovery period does not matter.
• Bonus depreciation may be
Managing Your Equipment Duration
CrewCost believes there’s a lot more to equipment depreciation than initially meets the eye.
“With a little bit of strategy, depreciation can be a valuable way to mitigate taxes on the profit your business generates,” said the company. “Keeping accurate track of depreciation is also a smart business move. For construction accounting purposes, it gives you insight into what your equipment is actually worth.”
Tracking depreciation also allows your accountant to accurately determine what your balance sheet looks like.
CrewCost explains in detail how a contractor can potentially manage construction equipment duration:
• Depreciation is the gradual loss of value of a piece of equipment over time. For tax purposes, it allows construction companies to deduct the declining value as an expense to lower taxable income.
• There are several different methods of calculating depreciation, including straight-line, sumof-the-years, and the declining balance method.
• Tracking depreciation accurately describes the real value of the equipment assets on a business’ balance sheet over time. This helps with accounting and can make it easier for contractors to decide when to replace aging equipment. see DEPRECIATION page 112

Remote Capabilities Offer Safety to Machine Operators
from page 94
minute switch out of an attachment,” Propson said. “We can set an entire roof of trusses and we can turn right around with the same machine, never leave the footprint, and we can start sheeting that roof. There’s no tear down. There’s no waiting.”
Kristin Chose, director of business development of Ideal Crane, found that multi-purpose functionality on the build to be impressive.
“Something that was neat to see on this site was the different use of the attachments that Dave utilizes on a daily basis,” she said. “There are a lot of great aspects to the Manitou rotating telehandler, it saves time, keeps everything on budget, and it’s a really efficient machine.”
Having a multi-purpose machine doesn’t just provide time savings. It also garners cost savings.
“[Machines] cost money, so we’re happy with the MRT because it’s [one machine] and it does so much. It’s less general insurance that we have to buy for multiple machines to do multiple things, too,” Propson said. “To have a product that can do it all and do it all as one makes life super convenient and less expensive for us.”
Safety is an additional factor that makes the Manitou rotating telehandler the right machine for Propson Construction.
“For us, the MRT is the machine that we look towards when we can’t get to where we need to be, when we can’t throw the beam up on our shoulder and push it up ladders,” said Propson, emphasizing that the equipment has improved safety on the job site and can prevent back and other injuries.
Manitou represents a growing trend of homebuilders embracing the flexibility that a rotating telehandler provides their construction site.
“The safety factor behind it is tremendous.”
The rotating telehandler’s remote operation capabilities add to the safety aspect of the machine. The remote’s digital interface provides valuable data, including fuel percentage and DEF percentage, and more importantly, a load chart system that indicates what the weight of the load is and if it’s working within the machine’s operating capacity. That gives Propson and his crew the ability to know how close they are to maxing out load before it happens.
“If we have a deep load and we’re not sure we’re able to take that and swing it out, we check the digital interface. We can see, for example, that we have 500 pounds to spare. We’ll be safe. It’ll be perfect,” he said. “That gives us peace of mind rather than guessing what capacity we think is going to be there.”
The remote also gives the operator full sight of what they’re doing by standing closer to the workspace — and that proximity allows them to have conversations with their coworkers in the area, further improving jobsite awareness and safety.
“We’re able to watch the rotator, as well as watching the
work being done. It’s given us the ability to get rid of any blind spots. On this recent build, the entire back screen porch was a total blind spot if you were an operator from a cab,” Propson said. “It takes out the guesswork and all the hand signals and the chance for miscommunication. This is a great machine, hands down. But when you throw the remote into the equation, it’s an untouchable machine.”
It also provides the flexibility to adjust to smaller or larger crews by way of the remote and is easy to transport between job sites within a 10- to 15-mi. radius. The machine is legal to drive on the road and features lights for safety, so Propson’s crew doesn’t need to load it onto a trailer.
The Manitou rotating telehandler was the best solution for Propson Construction’s recent build, and Propson knows it will continue to provide the performance the company needs for other projects.
“It’s just like another tool in their tool belt. They’re able to use it to accomplish so many tasks. It covers the forklift portion of it and the manlift portion of it,” said Kurt Kalhagen, vice president of operations, Ideal Crane. “They were running it with the remote one minute and then at the next minute, the crew was able to go back to pounding nails or lining up the next wall set and hooking the load. The versatility of the machine makes the projects run that much smoother.”
According to Propson, they don’t run into many things that this machine can’t accomplish on a build.
“The rotating telehandler is a capstone of our business. We rely on it. Without it, can we build a house? Yes. Do we want to build a house without it? No,” Propson said. “There’s this general belief that you’ve got to kill yourself out here to make a dollar and that’s not a good belief. There are machines like this that you can use and get your guys going home feeling good. Their weekends aren’t two days of physical recuperation. It’s two days of time with their family.” CEG

Old Pump Set for Demolition Once New Station Is Online
LOUISVILLE from page 86
provide high-quality work. Nicholson is a subcontractor to Ulliman Schutte, which is responsible for the ongoing diaphragm wall construction. Nicholson is an integral team member on this project, working collaboratively with the team to keep the project on schedule while delivering a high-quality project.”
Currently, reinforced concrete diaphragm walls are being constructed within the landside of the levee embankment. These diaphragm walls will serve as the temporary support of excavation for the new flood pump station, the permanent foundation for the new flood pump station, cutoff of levee under seepage and levee embankment stability during an Ohio River flood event.
forced concrete braces will be installed as the excavation advances. Temporary steel bracing also will be used until the base slabs are placed and cured to complete the structural system.
“Excavation inside of the new pump sta-
Flaherty noted that the project team has elected to conservatively approach the timing of the demolition of the existing pump station.
“It will remain in place as a backup while the new pump station is operationally tested during multiple flood events. Once the project team is comfortable with the improved protection that the new pump station offers the city, the existing pump station will be decommissioned with the above grade portion demolished.”
Louisville MSD photo
In Louisville, Ky., construction crews are tasked with replacing a flood pump station (FPS) with a new facility.
Prior to beginning the diaphragm wall work, the project team expanded the levee on the river side and then constructed an access ramp and work platform on the landside of the levee. This work platform is currently supporting the reinforced concrete diaphragm wall construction operations.
Two levels of permanent, interior, rein-
tion will be facilitated by the pump station access ramp within the diaphragm wall system,” said Flaherty. “It will eventually serve as a means, when the station is not in service, to easily remove any flood water debris which may have accumulated at bar screens protecting the pumps.”
Louisville weather conditions must be monitored as the project moves forward.
“Storm events seem to be increasing in frequency and intensity. The new pump station is designed to handle a projected 10-year, 24-hour storm event within a 20-year planning horizon. The new pump station’s capacity will be 1,900 million gpd which equates to pumping out an Olympic-size swimming pool every 28 seconds.”
Roughly 20,000 cu. yds. of approved, compacted fill material were placed on the river side of the levee, and approximately 18,000 cu. yds. of material were placed on
the landside of the levee. Diaphragm wall excavation currently under way totals approximately 22,000 cu. yds. The pump station excavation inside of the diaphragm walls will be approximately 21,000 cu. yds. Construction equipment used on the project includes multiple crawler cranes ranging in size from 110 tons to 770 tons; rough-terrain cranes; excavators of various sizes; and off-road trucks. The new pump station structure is being constructed from a blend of reinforced concrete, precast concrete and masonry.
Access in and around the project site is extremely limited. In addition, the overall project construction schedule is shared equally by the permanent below grade diaphragm wall work currently under way and future work to complete and to outfit the new pump station within and above the diaphragm walls.
Work officially began in July 2023, with the substantial completion date now scheduled for March 2027. Despite the challenges, Flaherty said it’s satisfying to work on such a major undertaking.
“We are proud to be a partner on this critical infrastructure project that will protect the city of Louisville for many future generations.” CEG
Total Phase-Out of Bonus Depreciation Finishes in 2027
Depreciation is a way of looking at an asset and recognizing that it won’t be worth the same amount of money over the course of its lifespan.
“Assets depreciate for several reasons, including wear and tear, or because newer models of equipment come out,” said CrewCost.
“While it may seem like a bad thing, depreciation actually has some advantages.”
For example, construction businesses can write off the lost value of the asset during tax season and have that count against profit generated over the year.
When it comes to equipment depreciation, here a couple of terms to get familiar with:
• Book Value — The value of the piece of equipment minus the value that has depreciated. The book value is depreciated until it reaches the salvage value, where it is fully depreciated.
• Depreciable Value — The depreciable value is the equipment’s purchase price minus the
book value. In other words, this is the amount of value you expect the piece of equipment to lose during the period during which you use it.
• Depreciation Period — The depreciation period is the period of time over which you plan to use the equipment and incrementally subtract the depreciable value from it.
With an estimated salvage value, depreciable value and the depreciation period, you have the basic information you need to depreciate the equipment.
There are a few different methods of depreciation you can use to depreciate your equipment. “Each method offers a slightly different benefit,” said CrewCost
“Ultimately, you want to consult with an accountant or tax professional to see which method best fits your business.”
• Straight-Line Method —
This is the simplest and most commonly used method of depreciation and is the one you are probably most familiar with. Straightline depreciation is just like it sounds; you take the depreciable
The tax provision can lower taxable income for the year the equipment is purchased and deployed. That can free up capital for operations or even business reinvestment.
value, let’s use $40,000 from the earlier example, and you divide that by the number of years you will depreciate the equipment (aka its estimated useful life). So, $40,000 divided by five years gives us a depreciation value of $8,000/year. This is the easiest method to use and gives a nice, steady rate of depreciation over the useful life of the asset.
• Sum-of-the-Years Method
— This method takes into account the number of years you plan to own and depreciate the piece of equipment. Sum-of-the-Years applies a variable rate to the total depreciable amount that changes each year, starting at a higher rate and gradually becoming smaller. This is a good method to depreciate a larger proportion of the equipment earlier in its operational lifetime.
• Declining-Balance Method
— This depreciation method, similar to the Sum-of-the-Years method, is an accelerated method that determines a constant rate to apply to the remaining depreciable amount and is applied until the equipment is completely depreciated and reaches its salvage value. Often, a piece of equipment will be carried on a contractor’s accounting books at a different amount. In this case, sometimes it’s noted as the depreciation included versus what’s shown on the contractor’s tax records.
“These differences could be pretty significant,” said CrewCost. “They may not be able to show a piece of equipment with accelerated depreciation on their accounting records compared to what happened on a tax basis.”
Or the equipment may be required to be depreciated over a different time frame, noted the company.
“Carefully tracking these makes it easier to reconcile book accounting profitability versus tax profitability over time.” CEG
