cranes, remarkable pieces of machinery that take up very little area on the ground while they raise 200,000-lb. (90,700 kg) payloads up to 700 ft. (213 m) in the air. “These things are amazing, they take up eight feet on the ground and then lift floors in less than two hours,” Barnes said. “Every now and then we rent a smaller crane, but we really do the majority of the work with our tower cranes.” What makes tower cranes remarkable is their lifting capacity and the ability to go so high with such a small footprint, Barnes said. “They’re designed to lean backwards until they pick up their maximum weight, and you can change the maximum weight by where the jib is on the trolley,” he said. “The beauty of the tower crane is you can put jumping units around it that let’s you change the height – you ramp the upper part of the crane up, not expand the base.” Barnes is working with two SK575 Terex Peiner cranes, designed in Germany. The cranes have a 260-ft. (79 m) tower and a 265-ft. (80.7 m) jib. “The best tower cranes all come from Germany,” he said. “They’re terrific, really clever, but you have to understand the German engineering perspective and European wiring schematics to use them.” There’s no slop in setting them up, he said. “The quality control is very, very, very strict,” Barnes said. “They’re built like Swiss watches, by people wearing white gloves in a clean, dust-free environment and when you use them, you have to be that kind of careful.” Peiner has a manufacturing plant in Wilmington, N. C., so parts aren’t more than a phone call and Fedex away. The German bent for precision comes into play every step of using the crane, Barnes said. “The first thing you do is make sure the platform they’re on is plumb to one-sixteenth of an inch. It seems like a small thing, but when the tower goes up hundreds of feet, that can change the whole angle,” he said. Then, before jump sections are added for a maximum 260-ft. (79.2 m) height, the crane has to be solidly bound to the building at three trustworthy points. Adding jump sections once it’s tied in adds height to get the crane high above the building.
The Strip is currently bustling with construction activity.

to the one built into the crane. “Peiner has anemometers and alarms mounted on the crane to give you readings,” he said. “It can be 5 mph on the ground but very windy on top when it seems dead calm. You can hear the beeping up high when there isn’t enough wind to move your hair down here.” When the cranes encounter wind speeds above 40 mph, they trigger an alarm that tells operators to shut down. “I tell my operators you can’t operate a crane unless you can safely control the load. A trash bucket with a small sail area can be okay in a wind that would make moving a wall, with a big sail area, too dangerous,” he said. “You have to know your operators and their abilities, and you have to respect their judgement. “I’ve heard stories about operators who won’t work in high winds being told that they can be replaced if they don’t,” Barnes added. “Working for a company like Perini that counts on their people, nobody pushes you to make schedule at the expense of safety.”
“Moving the crane higher is a two-shift, sixteen hour process and everyone has to be paying complete attention, completely focused,” Barnes said. “It’s almost always human error if something goes wrong. If you follow the very precise guidelines to a tee you are very safe.” Once the crane is jumped up, it often takes less than two hours to do the work it took two shifts to set up for. “It’s about safety,” Barnes said. “It’s about using the equipment properly. The time you put in to get everything right is time you don’t spend undoing damage and apologizing to people’s families.” In Las Vegas, high winds can put a damper on high altitude work. “You’re working on a three-sided frame and you’re lifting up to 200,000 pounds, and you don’t want the wind to hit you and blow the top off the crane,” he said. “What the wind speed is on the ground has almost nothing to do with what’s going on a couple hundred feet up.” Barnes handled the pumping during the jacking up phase, so he brought his own anemometer for wind measurements — a back-up

Liebherr Introduces LR1200 Crawler Crane to America The new, highly mobile (sets up or tears down in less than two hours) 250-ton (227 t) Liebherr LR 1200 crawler crane can operate with a 292-ft. (89 m) maximum main boom, 384-ft. (117 m) long-reach “L” type top and 486 ft. (148 m) of luffing jib combination. The luffing jib outlifts 300-ton (272 t) rated cranes, and no additional winch option is required to run two load lines. A midfall short insert is available that can be put in different locations with the same jib length, and fixed jibs, roosters (detachable upper boom point) and LR 1280 luffing jib are interchangeable throughout the LR model line. Line speeds range from 425 fpm (129 m) standard to 725 fpm (221 m) with optional high-speed winch. Line pull is 27,000 lb. (1,225 kg) on top layer, 38,600 lb. (17,509 kg) on first layer. Because of Liebherr’s on-line LMI/LML calculation system, it is possible to operate in luffing jib configurations with the main boom angle anywhere between 44 and 89 degrees — and boom and luff with load simultaneously. The luffing jib also has a mid-fall available, plus the capability to run two lines over the luffing jib top for pre-cast work. The Liebherr Litronic control system allows various equipment configurations to be operated without changing software. An electro-hydraulic proportional control system allows several movements to be performed simultaneously, assuring that all categories of loads can be positioned with utmost precision, according to the manufacturer. The power pack is a Liebherr D 936 L-A6 360 hp (268 kW) that meets both Tier III EPA and CARB standards and runs on ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel. One large in-line main hydraulic pump with no PTO gear box prevents parasitic horsepower loss. Thus the engine provides as much power to the functions as a 400-hp (298 kW) engine in multi-pump PTO machines. “The LR 1200 has been received with great enthusiasm in North America,” said Scott Moreland, U.S. vice president of Sales and Marketing of Liebherr Nenzing Crane Co., “and we have received multiple orders from many of the large U.S. rental firms and general contractors. “Customers like the way we beat the competition in fuel economy and available power because of our advanced single-pump open-loop hydraulic system design and power management system, as well as the high line-pull/line-speed which, coupled with the ability to boom and luff 14
The 250-ton (227 t) Liebherr LR1200 crawler crane can operate with a 292-ft. (89 m) maximum main boom, 384-ft. (117 m) long-reach “L” type top and 486 ft. (148 m) of luffing jib combination.
simultaneously, gives high production in piecework operations such as hanging iron or pre-cast.” The LR 1200 is mounted on a heavy-duty excavator style undercarriage with low maintenance sealed bearings and 48-in. (122 cm) flat-track shoes. Crawler dimensions are: 28.5
ft. (8.7 m) length, 23 ft. (7 m) width — retractable hydraulically to 19 ft. (5.8 m) — and pad width 48 in. (122 cm). Tail swing is approximately 19 ft. Like all Liebherr crawler cranes, the LR 1200 can assemble or disassemble itself and load itself on trucks in less than two hours. 15
The Liebherr LR Series of lift cranes includes several machines with capacities from 115 to 300 tons (104 to 272 t) for a wide range of service from common lifting and assembly jobs to smaller clamshell and dragline applications For more information, call 713/636-4050.
Manitowoc 16000 Available With Lift-Enhancing MAX-ER The Manitowoc model 16000 is a 440-ton (400 t) crawler crane that is now available with Manitowoc Crane Group’s lift-enhancing MAX-ER attachment. The 16000 is often used for wind power equipment erection, as well as petrochemical and fabrication yard applications. The MAX-ER attachment can provide up to 256 tons (232 t) of counterweight. The standard boom length is 315 ft. (96 m) on the 16000. With the MAX-ER, boom length can be increased to 394 ft. (120 m). With the addition of a luffing jib, there is an even more dramatic increase. Typically, the 16000 can handle a 177-ft. (54 m) boom with a 275-ft. (84 m) jib, for a total reach of 452 ft. (148 m). But with the MAX-ER, the crane can support a 295-ft. (90 m) boom and a 275-ft. (84 m) luffing jib, a total of 570 ft. (174 m) of reach. For the first time on a Manitowoc crane, this MAX-ER is equipped with a hydraulically driven stinger. According to Al Kadow, Manitowoc Crane Group’s product marketing manager of lattice-boom cranes, this allows the operator in the cab to hydraulically adjust the position of the MAX-ER behind the crane. The mechanical stinger required manual adjustment. For more information, visit www.manitowoccranes.com.

ALL Aerials Adds 250 JLG Lifts
ALL’s new JLG 150HAX features a 150-ft. (45 m) platform height.
ALL Aerials, part of the ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. family of companies, acquired approximately 250 new aerial lifts from JLG. The new equipment offers boom heights from 30 ft. (9 m) up to 150 ft. (45 m), and includes several specialty models, including a sizeable quantity of JLG’s 150-ft. articulating boom lift (150HAX). ALL Aerials is one of few companies in the United States with the 150-ft. lifts in its rental fleets. Not only does the 150-ft. platform height allows access to high outdoor applications, but, as with all articulating models, the 150HAX is driveable at full elevation and the chassis width provides access to narrow industrial aisles and congested work areas. Other specialty lifts added to the ALL Aerials fleet for the first time include crawler-type lifts, 60-ft. (18 m) electric boom lifts, and models with on-board welders. The new crawler-type lifts have tracks like a bulldozer and are ideal for applications such as bridge building or anywhere the lifts have to traverse steep embankments or muddy, soft, or sandy terrain. The 60-ft. electric boom lifts are powered by rechargeable batteries and can work on indoor applications without producing engine emissions, making them essential for working on indoor or slab applications. The onboard welders allow workers to weld pipes, for instance, up to 125 ft. (38 m) in the air, eliminating other more awkward or dangerous solutions. The new equipment was purchased with companywide input from ALL locations in various geographic areas, where customers’ needs differ widely. “We are aggressively pursuing acquisitions of new equipment in the aerial market,” said Michael Liptak, ALL Erection & Crane Rental president. “This year, we have made a major thrust in the area of specialty aerial lifts that will upgrade our fleet with the newest, most exciting equipment to serve our customers’ diverse needs.” The ALL family of companies offers its fleet of cranes, aerial work platforms, boom trucks, material handlers, and other lift equipment from many locations throughout the United States and Canada. pressors, air dryers, actuators, and airline conductors. They will see how air can transfer energy through vacuum, distribution, and directional controls. The AC/DC drives and motors module will help students understand how electrical motors and drives work with each other and other systems. Students will learn how to identify and calculate the speed, torque, and horsepower of a motor, how motors and drives operate, and how to match system components to specific applications. The safety considerations associated with operating electromechanical systems also are covered. At the beginning of each 15-hour module, students are encouraged to take a pre-test to establish their base level of knowledge. Throughout the course, there are quizzes to check comprehension and a post-course test for certification. Students can complete the course at their convenience and can stop and start whenever necessary. Courses are currently available in English, additional versions in Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, and Chinese will be available soon. Manitowoc Crane CARE has added three new modules to its ETraining program. Basic courses on mechanical systems, pneumatics, and AC/DC drives and motors are now available online. The three new offerings join the mobile hydraulic and mobile electric courses previously available. John Alexander, Manitowoc Crane CARE’s director of training and technical publications for the Americas region said that all five of these basic courses will provide an excellent starting point for more crane-specific training in hands-on factory courses. The basic skills taught in these courses are applicable to all types of equipment and not just cranes. “These E-Training courses are a cost-effective way of building basic knowledge,” he said. “When students attend our full factory level course with this basic knowledge, our trainers can focus more on teaching with actual cranes, test benches, and simulators rather than taking time to teach the basics of mechanical power transmission or pneumatics.” The basic mechanical course will give students a broad-based view of the physics, schematics, and systems design associated with mechanical power transmission. Specific topics include: linear actuators, clutches, brakes, bearings, gears, and drives. The pneumatics course focuses on the basics associated with pneumatic and fluid power systems. Students will learn about com20
