include additional sprinkler systems in the concourses and automatic exit doors in the roll down grates. Structured Renovation The club has made annual improvements since Principal Owner John Henry, Chairman Tom Werner, Lucchino and their partners purchased the club prior to the 2002 season. D’Agostino Izzo & Quirk of Somerville, Mass., designed this year’s improvements. William A. Berry & Son Inc. of Danvers, Mass., won the general contractor bid. Bostonbased McNamara Salvia is the structural engineer and SEI of Boston is the mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer. The code and life safety consultant is Howe Engineers of Sandwich, Mass. All changes are being made in accordance with the standards set by the National Park Service and are reviewed in advance by the Massachusetts Historic Commission, the Boston City Landmarks Commission and Boston Redevelopment Authority. “For decades,” Lucchino said, “there was a presumption that Fenway Park had outlived its useful life and, sentiment aside, would have to be replaced by a modern facility in another location. We are eager to see, in 2012, this ballpark become the first ever to celebrate its 100th anniversary.” CQ
Plans for historic Fenway Park include new scoreboards, new stairways and elevators, new restrooms and concessions that will serve the State Street pavilion and the Green Monster and a new restaurant in center field.
Changes to Fenway Park: for the New Fenway Park had been abandoned.
1912 – Infield grass was transplanted from Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds to Fenway.
2003 – Seats were added to the Green Monster. The Green Monster features a manually operated scoreboard that displays division standings, the line score for the game and scores from other MLB games. It’s 304.779 ft. (92.9 m) high according to one measurement or 308 ft. (93.9 m.) according to another, and sits 310 ft. (94.5 m) from home plate. It has been green only since 1947. Before that, it was covered with advertisements. The original 25-ft. (7.6-m) wall was made of wood, which burned along with the rest of the park in the 1934 fire. The second wall was 37 ft. (11.3 m), with tin over wooden railroad ties. The current hard plastic wall, also 37 ft., was erected in 1976.
1933-1934 – All of the wooden grandstands were replaced with concrete and steel. A fire on January 5, 1934, destroyed much of what had already been built, but everything was finished for the season opener on April 17, 1934. 1936 – A 23-ft., 7-in. (7 m, 17.8 cm) net was placed atop the wall in left field to protect windows on Landsdowne Street. 1940 – The bullpens were moved from fair territory to right field, which made the right-field fence closer. 1946 – Upper deck seats were installed, making Fenway Park the first double-tiered ballpark in Boston since the South End Grounds of the 1880s.
2005 – Major improvements saw the installation of a new drainage system on the field to prevent the field from becoming too wet to play on during light to medium rains, and to reduce the time needed to dry the field adequately; Gate E was transformed into a grand entrance, with a new restaurant in the adjacent Jeano building; Landsdowne Street was refurbished with cherry trees and historic street lamps; and a larger concourse was added behind section 16 on the first base side. After the season, the Red Sox completed their plans for the .406 Club, which became the EMC Club. The construction resulted in 852 pavilion club seats, 745 pavilion box seats and approximately 200 pavilion standing-room seats along the left- and right-field lines, for a total of 1300 additional seats. The old field was completely dug up and replaced with a new $2 million field, featuring state-of-the-art drainage and heating systems to reduce rainouts. The Red Sox also expanded the team’s clubhouse, adding a new weight room, batting cage, interview area and physical training and therapy area.
1947 – Arc lights were installed. The Boston Red Sox were the thirdto-last out of 16 major league teams to have lights in their home park. 1976 – Fenway’s first message board was added over the center field bleachers. The left-field scoreboard, installed on the wall in 1934, moved 20 ft. to the right. 1982 – The 1946 roof boxes were replaced. 1983 – Private suites were added to the roof. 1988 – A glassed-in seating section called the 600 Club (renamed the .406 Club in 2002) was built behind home plate. 1999 – Auxiliary press boxes were added above the roof boxes along the first and third base sides. When the Red Sox proposed a replacement for Fenway Park in 1999, fans formed a group called “Save Fenway Park!” to promote ways to preserve the old ball park. Their efforts were ultimately successful; the current owners announced in 2005 that plans
2006 – Luxury boxes and bathrooms behind the third base grandstands were renovated and a new food concourse was added. Fenway’s capacity was increased from 36,298 to 38,805, making Pittsburgh’s PNC Park the smallest ballpark in the country. 10

three months, and S282 truck-mounted self-erecting crane, which was only necessary during the final month of construction. The Potain HDT 80 has a maximum capacity of 6.6 tons (6 t) and maximum jib of 148 ft. (45 m). The S282 has a maximum capacity of 2.2 tons (2 t) and a maximum jib of 82 ft. (25 m). “The precise control of the Potain cranes in setting these delicate blocks just millimeters apart made them the perfect choice for this job,” said Joel Hunt. “Both were maneuvered via remote control so the operator was able to position himself perfectly for monitoring the lifts. The cranes were also very easy to set up and then remove from the site, which was an added bonus.” The temple was built entirely by volunteers from India and other parts of the world. BAPS is a religious organization with 640 temples in 45 countries. The temple is the only one of its kind in Canada and officially opened in July.
Two Potain self-erecting cranes were utilized to complete an opulent new Hindu temple in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Both Potain cranes were supplied on bare rental from Potain dealer Cropac Equipment of Oakville, Ontario. According to Joel Hunt of Cropac’s sales staff, the cranes had an arduous work schedule. “During their time on-site the cranes were on call from 9 a.m. to midnight and they clocked up an average of 250 working hours per month,” he said. “The highest quality marble and limestone were shipped to the job from Italy and then hand-carved in place. The cranes were placing these pieces which weighed from 1.1 to 3.3 tons.” The temple owner, Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan (BAPS), managed the construction of the temple and the operation of the cranes. The two cranes utilized in the construction of the Hindu temple were the HDT 80 self-erecting crane that was on-site for 14

Manitou North America launches its newest model, the MRT 2150P. The “Privilege” series is the evolution of the existing MRT product range. Changes include a new, more powerful Tier III Mercedes engine and improvements to the operator’s compartment. According to the manufacturer, the larger cab has increased visibility due to its curved windshield and new instrument panel. Ergonomic joysticks are another addition to the cab and all fluids are now housed outside the cab, making for a cleaner operator environment. An updated lighting package and paint/decal scheme round out the cosmetic changes. The MRT 2150P offers a 10,000 lb. (4,536 kg) capacity with 67 ft., 7 in. (20.6 m) of lift height, as well as continuous rotation and frame leveling for easy placement of loads on any job site, according to the manufacturer. A hydrostatic transmission, the fully enclosed cab and the Manitou Safety System are a few of the standard features on this new model. Grove GTK1100 Debuts on Wind Power Site in Germany Manitowoc’s Grove GTK1100 crane has completed its inaugural lift series at a job site in Germany for Wiesbauer. Jochen Wiesbauer, managing director of Wiesbauer, said, “The performance of the GTK1100 on this first set of lifts was simply outstanding. Because these lifts were the first in a field setting we took extra caution and double-checked everything. But even with this, the cost and time savings compared to other lift solutions were exceptional.” The GTK1100’s first job was in Ilshofen, Baden Würtemberg in the southern part of Germany. Energy provider Repower Systems is installing a 2.7-hp (2 kW) wind turbine at the location and selected the GTK for an initial project. Efficient transport is a key benefit of the GTK1100, according to the manufacturer. The crane is designed to travel on only four or five trailers depending on its configuration and local road regulations. For the Baden Würtemberg job the crane required only four trailers because there was no counterweight required for the lifting configuration. The GTK1100 completed five lifts on the job site. The first three were the wind turbine tower mast sections that weighed 68, 58 and 50 tons (62 t, 53 t and 45 t). Next was the installation of the heaviest element, the nacelle, which weighed 77 tons (70 t). Finally, the crane positioned the three rotor blades — each weighing 8.8 tons (8 t), which were assembled on the ground before being lifted as a single 46-ton (42 t) load. Frans Vanwinkel, senior vice president of sales and marketing of Manitowoc in EMEA said, “The crane worked perfectly on this job and the erection and dismantling was fast and smooth. Unlike traditional lifting solutions on projects such as these, the GTK allowed Repower Systems to save on ground preparation costs. These savings come through a combination of reduced space requirements on-site and greater stability on uneven ground because of the GTK’s advanced outrigger design. “We invited customers and potential customers from Asia, North America, South America and Europe to this job,” Vanwinkel continued. “Seeing the GTK in action, on-site, really opened a lot of people’s eyes to its full capabilities.” The GTK1100 has a 251-ft. (76.5 m) vertical tower which is topped with a five-section 197-ft. (60 m) telescopic boom. It is able to lift loads of more than 77 tons (70 t) to heights of more than 394 ft. (120 m).

The Grove GTK1100 is a totally new concept in the lifting industry and was first seen at the Bauma 2007 exhibition in Munich, Germany.

New products, unveiled at the open house, included the new “Flat Top” Terex Comedil CTT 231.
Terex Comedil Showcases New Products at Open House in Italy The tower crane specialist Terex Comedil has undergone substantial change, made apparent at the open house held in Fontanafredda, Italy, in September 2007. This was the first open house organized by the tower crane manufac-
turer at its site. Visitors from all over the world came to Italy to see how a company can reinvent itself: the Terex Business System, based on the Japanese continual improvement philosophy Kaizen has been integrated with phenomenal speed into the company culture. For Martina Moritsch, general manager of Terex Comedil, this is an important step in enabling the company to focus even more purposefully on the requirements of international clients. Steve Filipov, president of Terex Cranes, added, “Our common goal is to process customer inquiries even faster and, within the context of product development, to pursue ideas for maximum safety and the simplest possible assembly and logistics.” The company’s new administration building was officially opened by Moritsch and Filipov during the open house. A new spare parts and logistics center in Fontanafredda is nearing completion and will commence operations in 2008. New products, unveiled at the open house, included the new “Flat Top” Terex Comedil CTT 231. This machine has a 230-ft. (70 m) boom and a lifting capacity of 2.3 tons (2.1 t) at the tip. Erection has been simplified – from the assembly of the stabilizer base to the positioning of the counterweights and the faster assembly of the TS23 tower components, according to the manufacturer. Additional railings and non-slip metal plates in the access and cab areas, together with ergonomically designed aluminum ladders, enhance the crane operator’s safety and comfort, according to the manufacturer. Other improvements are new electronics, including a new touchscreen with graphical interface and new Integrated Control System software. Additional control functions mean that information about the machine’s operating status is always available. For more information visit www.terex.com. 20

Fenway Park: America’s Little Ballpark Grows Up Capco, performing the steel erection work on the renovation project, opted for the 2250 crawler crane because of its capacity. “It’s designed for heavy loads, depending on the configuration,” Fioravanti explained. The 300-ton (272 t) capacity crane can be configured a number of ways, maximizing its capacity to 600 tons (544.3 t). “There’s a MAX-ER attachment that allows us to change the jib to a luffing jib that works back and forth for additional reach and movement.” Because the crane weighs 290,000 lbs. (131,541 kg), Fioravanti explained that one unusual consideration on this job was fear of damaging the field. “We’re Red Sox fans with season tickets. That’s hallowed ground,” he laughs. All joking aside, moving the crane was done cautiously, using one-inch-thick steel plates to protect the field. Despite a tight deadline that required getting the crane working quickly, he said it was a necessary step, even if it added time. Moving wasn’t rushed; it was done “carefully, with a lot of planning. The deadline didn’t compromise anything. We work safely and methodically,” Fioravanti said. With the deadline in mind, crews of approximately 50 are working double shifts seven days a week. Fioravanti indicated that weather has

Fenway Park celebrates its 96th anniversary this year. In lieu of a birthday gift comes a much-needed update. Like so many unassembled toys, one of Fenway’s “gifts” had to be put together before it could be put to use. The Manitowoc 2250 crawler crane rented from L. J. Crane & Rigging, Cranston, R.I., by Capco Steel Inc., Providence, R.I., was too large to pass through Fenway’s small overhead door. L. J. Crane vice president and COO Paul Fioravanti explained that crews had to disassemble it in order to cart the pieces through the restrictive opening, and then reassemble it inside the park. “Look at the size of the crane,” Fioravanti said, “and look at the size of the door. It doesn’t seem possible.” In fact, Capco had been advised that it wouldn’t be possible to get the crane inside, but since the 2250 was necessary for the job, L.J. Crane took measurements and planned strategies for disassembling it into the minimum number of smaller parts necessary to get it through the door: “emergency” sub-assembly, as Fioravanti describes it.

The Manitowoc 2250 crawler crane rented from L.J. Crane & Rigging by Capco Steel Inc. was too large to pass through Fenway’s small overhead door and was disassembled then reassembled in the park.
The 2250 is being used not only to set structural steel and precast, but also to remove an old light tower and install a new one.

not been a significant factor, although he confessed that working around snow in an open dome is a challenge and that the cold temperatures can make “maintenance a headache.” However, with the 2250’s climatecontrolled cab and other operator comforts, cold weather hasn’t hampered work. Capco project manager Steve Bean indicated that weather hasn’t been the only challenge to the timeline: the close confines of the small stadium have made it difficult to stay on schedule. Because it’s so small, some of the crane work has to be conducted from outside the ballpark. “It’s tough to work in the street. There are only certain hours we’re allowed to be in the street, so it limits our time,” Bean said. In addition to the Manitowoc 2250 crawler crane, Capco used a Grove GMK 90-ton hydraulic mobile crane to set structural steel. Structural steel work was scheduled for completion by late January. Placement of pre-cast was scheduled to begin on January 24. Later work includes installing handrails and tables; the miscellaneous work will continue into March. Bean estimates that 400 tons (362 t) of steel and 200
Best Seat in the House Built at a cost of $650,000, Boston’s historic Fenway Park opened on April 20, 1912. The Red Sox won the World Series that year, and won it again three more times before 1918. Fans flocked to the cramped 35,000-seat ballpark: a 1935 doubleheader against the New York Yankees saw 47,627 fans squeeze in. But fire laws in the 1940s prohibited overcrowding, leaving the post-war record crowd considerably smaller at 36,388, set in 1978. Most of the old ballparks dating to that period are long gone, but despite issues with small clubhouses, creaking floorboards and damp tunnels to the dugouts, Fenway has survived and at the advanced age of 96, when other ballparks have long since given way to “progress,” Fenway is not only undergoing a facelift, but it’s also experiencing a growth spurt. More than 800 new State Street pavilion seats will be added: 620 on
Capco Steel opted for the 2250 crawler crane because of its capacity. The 300-ton-capacity crane can be configured a number of ways, maximizing its capacity to 600 tons.
One unusual consideration on this job was fear of damaging the field, which Red Sox fans consider hallowed ground. Moving the crane was done cautiously, using one-inch-thick steel plates to protect the field. 8
Structural upgrades and stabilization are underway in all seating areas. The Red Sox also plan to replace the old wood seats in the Grandstand section before the 2012 season.
the third base side of the park, 220 on the first base side. The pavilion area will be extended down the lines, with the new seats added to the third level above home plate. Red Sox president Larry Lucchino told reporters, “We understand the demand for such seats. Thus, we are adding to the supply.” The supply comes at a cost: ticket prices are going up (about 9 percent in 2008). However, adding 1,000 high-priced premium seats over three years will help defray construction costs. Besides, viewing opportunities will be increased and dramatically improved. Structural upgrades and stabilization are underway in all seating areas. The Red Sox also have stated that at some point before the 2012 season they would like to replace the old wood seats in the Grandstand section. Additionally, eight new private suites will replace the six that were housed in the temporary boxes placed on the pavilion for the 1999 All-Star Game. Twelve other private suites will be renovated. For those who can’t stay seated during the game, a dedicated Standing Room Corner beyond the seats on the third base side will provide a unique view of the field. The increased standing room areas along with the additional seating will increase Fenway’s capacity to approximately 37,000, topping its 1978 record. Other scheduled improvements include new scoreboards, new stairways and elevators, new permanent upgraded restrooms and concessions that will serve the State Street pavilion and the Green Monster and a new restaurant in center field. The new linear LED scoreboards will
line portions of the EMC level fascia, providing better views of the scoreboards in center and left field. A new elevator and stairway in left field and the staircase from the Gate A area on Yawkey Way to the back of the grandstand at Section 27 will improve vertical circulation. Bleacher Bar and Grill will open at the start of the 2008 season in center field, also with a view of the ballpark. Service level improvements
Pesky’s Pole and the Dunkin’ Dugout get careful treatment from the 2250 as it works around the right field line.

Crews of approximately 50 are working double shifts seven days a week. Weather has not been a significant factor, although working around snow in an open dome is challenging and cold temperatures can make equipment maintenance difficult.
