Maid of the Mist Mayday (45.7 m) above the river. Clark Rigging’s crew was first on site with its 400-ton (350 t) capacity class Terex AC 350/6 all terrain crane, equipped with its full counterweight and 210-ft. (64 m) main boom. Starting in May of 2013 and lasting for six weeks, the AC 350/6 crane was the workhorse of the project, aiding with initial site clean-up efforts. “We averaged 75 picks a day with the crane, lowering equipment down into the gorge,” said Clark. While Clark Rigging’s AC 350/6 crane was lowering supplies to clear the gorge of trash and overgrowth and prepare the riverside for a new dry dock and observation area, work commenced on constructing a buck hoist elevator for a more efficient way to get workers down to the project site. Additionally, a high capacity ringer crane was erected to lower cranes, trailers, pieces of the harbor crane and other heavy components into the project site.

It’s not always the size, weight or volume of lifts that poses the greatest challenge for a project. Sometimes the feat is just navigating a previously uncharted territory and accomplishing the difficult task in a tight time frame. The payoff is the satisfaction of knowing the crew overcame the challenges, built something that benefits the community and improves an old abandoned land area. Crane Rigging and Rental Corp. of Lockport, N.Y., and two of its cranes, the Terex AC 350/6 and Terex AC 500-2 all terrain cranes, recently completed one of these jobs. The crane rental contractor was one of the first responders to help the state of New York rescue a family-run business that has thrilled countless visitors and many celebrities with the majesty of the Niagara Falls. For more than 150 years, the Maid of the Mist ships have operated on the Niagara River Gorge. Initially, they served as ferries to transport people, cargo and carriages across the Niagara River below the waterfalls. In the modern era, the Maid of the Mist Corporation had leases in both Canada and New York to take spectators on a memorable tour of Niagara Falls. “The vessels would dock for the winter in Canada, since they had the infrastructure,” said Steve Clark, vice president of Clark Rigging and Rental Corp. That is, until the Maid of the Mist Corporation lost both its lease to operate in Canada and the docks that went along with it. With no place to dry-dock the vessels during the winter on the New York side of the Falls, the Maid of the Mist Corporation faced the potential of ceasing operations and the state of New York was in jeopardy of losing tourism revenues. Both the corporation and New York representatives quickly searched for a suitable location to build a dry dock facility. With few viable options, the state came up with a solution that would allow it to transform an abandoned property, while enabling the Maid of the Mist voyages to continue. “They chose the site of the old Schoellkopf Power Station for the new dock,” said Clark. “The plant collapsed into the Niagara River Gorge in the 1950s.” The site north of Niagara Falls had the full backing of the state for the $32 million renovation project. “We value the Maid of the Mist; we wanted to keep the Maid of the Mist here; we had a parcel we believed we could be better utilizing for the state and for tourism; and we put the two together,” said New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo while visiting Niagara Falls, N.Y., on Dec. 4, 2012. 50 Years Untouched Finding the site was the easy part. Building the infrastructure to support the two vessels and observation area would be the hard part. “Nothing had been done to the site since the Schoellkopf plant collapsed into the river,” said Clark. Melanie Parker, sales administrator of Clark Rigging said, “there was no access to the site for the equipment to build the harbor crane. Everything had to be lowered by crane.” This was from a cliff overlooking the gorge approximately 150 ft.

By September of 2013, work had progressed to the point where Clark Rigging’s crew was on site with the Terex AC 500-2 all terrain crane, complete with its main boom and full counterweight to erect the 200-ton (181 t) harbor crane. 12

Among the equipment the AC 350/6 all terrain crane lowered into the gorge were skid steer loaders, dozers, all terrain trucks and a 25,000-lb. (11,340 kg) excavator.

Among the equipment the AC 350/6 all terrain crane lowered into the gorge were skid steer loaders, dozers, all terrain trucks and a 25,000-lb. (11,340 kg) excavator. “We were working at about a 110-foot radius to lower material 150 feet into the gorge,” said Clark. “It’s a challenge working from that height in off-road conditions, where the terrain is not level.” As the riverside dock area took shape and with the ringer crane in place, Clark Rigging moved out its 400-ton crane and prepared its larger Terex AC 500-2 all terrain crane for the next project phase, construction of the harbor crane. “The AC 350/6 was the right crane to get this project started,” said Clark. “It had the capacity we needed and offered easy set-up.”

Clark. “The counterweight was lowered two at a time.” A Terex RT 655 rough terrain crane was also placed into the gorge. “The rough terrain crane assisted with boom installation on the AC 5002,” said Parker. Since the ringer crane did not have the reach to extend to the river’s edge, a trailer was positioned in the gorge to efficiently transport the harbor crane components to the edge of the water. For harbor crane construction, a total of eight components with an average weight of 70 tons (63.5 t) were hoisted and positioned by the AC 500-2 crane. Additional components positioned by the Terex all terrain crane included the 60-ton (54.4 t) crane base, 70-ton slewing gear and two 70-ton floating docks. A 90-ton (81.6 t) capacity, 58-ft. (17.7 m) spreader beam was placed in a tandem lift using the AC 500-2 crane and a crawler crane. “We worked at a short 30-foot radius with the AC 500-2 crane,” said Clark. “There were no major challenges with the lifts, and we were finished with the harbor crane within two weeks.” On November 1, 2013, the two Maid of the Mist vessels were pulled from the Niagara River by the 200-ton harbor crane and placed on their newly built dry dock at the former Shoellkopf Power Station site. The site’s two new platforms — one atop of the gorge and a second alongside the Niagara River — are now connected by a new elevator, giving pedestrian accessibility to the Niagara River Gorge, so the visitors will have a new way to experience the grandeur of this national treasure. Lifting the Mist By September of 2013, work had progressed to the point where Clark Rigging’s crew was on site with the Terex AC 500-2 all terrain crane, complete with its main boom and full counterweight to erect the 200-ton (181 t) harbor crane. With its 600-ton (500 t) lift capacity, the AC 500-2 offers the highest capacity of any eight-axle crane on the market, according to the company. Boasting the shortest vehicle length in its capacity class and a 183.7-ft. (56 m) telescoping boom, the AC 500-2 crane features the largest system length that can travel at a 12-ton (10.9 t) axle load, increasing lifting flexibility at the job site. Since there were no access roads leading to the dock area, the AC 500-2 crane was placed into the gorge from atop the cliff by the ringer crane. “It was lowered in two pieces, the main crane and the boom,” said 13

Bigge’s Big First Quarter Western Pa. ... Continues With Delivery Stephenson Expands for of Large Kobelco Buy Manitowoc

Bigge Crane and Rigging and Kobelco shared a major milestone for both companies at this year’s ConExpo. Bigge took delivery of a Kobelco CK2750G crawler crane, one of 25 new crawler cranes Bigge has purchased from Kobelco in 2014. The occasion marked the largest number of crawler cranes ever sold by Kobelco North America to one dealer in a quarter. The CK2750G, the largest crawler in the CK-G series, is a true example of a future looking crane, according to the company. Almost everything about the CK-G line has been redesigned and engineered for efficiency, control, power and safety. The crane features a nested boom that makes the crane easier to transport. It has a smaller footprint than typical cranes of its size, which makes the crane more maneuverable. The signature feature of the CK-G series is that everything has been engineered to help conserve energy. Its winch allows for maximum speed even at low idle, saving energy. Its exclusive auto idle stop (AIS) feature stops the engine when the crane is stopped, which lowers emissions. And of course, the new Tier IV clean diesel engine, which includes a new energy-saving assist system called the “G Mode,” reducing fuel consumption by 30 percent. “Bigge has been a very good dealer for us in the Western U.S. and Pacific Northwest,” said Jack Fendrick, president of Kobelco Cranes North America. “They have gotten really good at retailing new cranes and they have a lot invested in parts and servicing Kobelco crawler cranes.” The new Kobelco cranes are spread between Bigge’s locations in Texas, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, and are available for sale and rent. 14

Stephenson Equipment Inc. has expanded its territory for Manitowoc’s National Crane products to include western Pennsylvania. The National Crane line offers powerful truck mounted hydraulic cranes with long reach for precise work in tight spaces. “Extending our footprint from Philadelphia to Ohio will help us to better serve the natural gas, construction and power industries,” said Dennis Heller, president and CEO of Stephenson Equipment. “Carrying the full range of Manitowoc products at all Pennsylvania locations will allow us to expand our presence with factory trained technicians, a larger parts inventory statewide and a wider area for onsite service.” National Crane boom trucks feature lift capacities ranging from 8 to 40 tons (7 to 36 t). There are 11 models of stand-up control cranes with maximum reach from 56 to 167 ft. (17 to 51 m). National Crane also offers seven models of swing seat cranes with maximum vertical reach from 161 to 183 ft. (49 to 56 m).

Jesse Pettit completes the crane simulation task on a Vortex simulator. Scores on the simulator and a rigging quiz, provided by The Crosby Group, were a portion of the operator’s overall score.

Orlando and Chicago area crane operators took the top spots at the MCM & CIC Crane Operator Skills Championship, held March 6 to 7, 2014, in Las Vegas, Nev. Featured during ConExpo-Con/AGG, the competition drew crowds of onlookers and more than 40 operators who vied for the title in the championship competition. “While the event itself is a lot of fun, CIC acknowledges that this is serious business and crane operators are professionals. Safety and productivity are top of mind for these men, who boast years of experience and qualification via various certification or licensing programs,” said Debbie Dickinson, executive director of Crane Institute Certification (CIC). CIC congratulated Champion Kenneth Bowyer of ALL Crane Rental of Florida for his exceptional load control and ability to smoothly and efficiently complete the load handling tasks while under pressure. His score of 545.45 is a composite of his crane operation performance, successful completion of a crane simulator task, and demonstration of basic rigging knowledge. Bowyer received $2,000, a custom belt buckle and leather jacket. Bruce Gay, a member of IUOE Local 150 and an operator of Imperial Crane Service, Bridgeview, Ill., was named first runner up. Gay held onto the top spot for most of the competition, until Bowyer competed late in the morning of the second day. At the conclusion of the competition, Gay was presented with $1,000, a custom belt buckle and leather jacket. The title of second runner up and $500 went to another crane operator who qualified at the Sanford, Fla., regional competition in 2013 hosted by the Florida Crane Owners Council, Crane Institute of America and M&P Specialty Insurance. Thomas Cunningham is an operator of Sims Crane & Equipment, Orlando. Both Gay and Cunningham specialize in taxi crane rental, operating different types of cranes on a daily basis. Bowyer primarily operates a Liebherr 1250-6.1 300 ton AT, but he is a go-to operator for his company, with experience on RTs, crawlers, and truck cranes of various makes. Bowyer also has experience on RT, crawler, and truck mounted cranes of various makes and assists with training less-experienced operators. In addition, Jesse Pettit, the 2012 champion, and Gregg Eldridge, who made it to fourth place in 2012, both made respectable finishes at the 2014 Championship, coming in fifth and sixth, respectively. Chris Marlow, another crane operator of Imperial Crane Service, took the fourth position in this year’s event. Four of the 19 finalists are Canadians. Cory Babwick and Peter Delmonte earned spots during the 2013 regional qualifier in Lindale, Alberta. Babwick is employed by Alberta-based Canada Crane/Sarens Canada. Delmonte represented Kerr Crane of Ontario. Two additional Canadians qualified during the Las Vegas regional held March 4 and 5. They are David Goodhill of Mammoet Cranes in Ontario and Julien Bilodeau of Quebec. “Certified crane operators play an important role in achieving safety and productivity on the job site. Employers can rely on an operator’s certification as the foundation for his or her qualifications. CIC will continue to share this message with operators and their employers at future crane operator skills competitions,” said Dickinson. For more information, visit www.craneoperatorrodeo.com. ALL Crane Celebrates Anniversary With Major Link-Belt Purchase Link-Belt has announced a major equipment package with ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp., with 30 new Link-Belt cranes slated for immediate and scheduled delivery throughout 2014. In 2013, ALL, a longtime Link-Belt customer, took delivery of its 500th new Link-Belt crane in the last 15 years. And 2014 brings ALL not only 30 new LinkBelt cranes, but also the celebration of the company’s 50th anniversary in the crane rental business. Headlining the 30-crane package are four of Link-Belt’s latest and largest rough-terrain model, the 150-ton (135 t) RTC-80150 Series II. The new RTC-80150 moves easily around tight job sites — working at a lower profile and achieving a turning radius of less than 22 ft. (6.7 m). “The decision to purchase the new RTC-80150 was, in part, because our customers’ appetites continue to grow for long-reach, high-capacity RTCs for their job sites,” said Michael Liptak, president of ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. “We like this unit for both of these features, but are very impressed with how it transports. This machine can break down in less than an hour and reduces transport costs by keeping a low overall height while also maintaining a main unit transport weight under 100,000 pounds.”

For even greater versatility, the RTC-80150 has four independent steering modes consisting of two-wheel front, four-wheel rear, six-wheel and crab, which the operator can select in the cab and control from the steering wheel, and features a 42.3 to 195.3 ft. (12.9 to 59.5 m) six-section main boom. Rounding out the package purchase are three HTC-8690 telescopic truck cranes, eight 218 HSL lattice boom crawler cranes, six 238 HSL lattice boom crawler cranes, two TCC-750 telescopic crawler cranes and seven TCC-1100 telescopic crawler cranes. “Link-Belt highly values our relationship with ALL, and we are honored to support their commitment to providing their rental customers the latest and most advanced lifting equipment available in today’s market,” said Skeeter Collins, Link-Belt North American sales manager. “Our entire Link-Belt family would like to congratulate ALL on their 50th anniversary. They are truly the kind of company that we can give credit for helping to advance and improve the crane rental industry.” For more information visit www.linkbelt.com (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Grove GMK6400 Crosses Atlantic to Assist With Wind Energy Project

Verschoor Kraanverhuur, based in the Netherlands, purchased the crane from Manitowoc at Bauma 2013 in Munich, Germany, and almost immediately sent the 450-ton (400 t) crane to assist in wind farm maintenance in Curacao.

From Antwerp, Belgium, to the Caribbean country of Curacao and back again, a Grove GMK6400 all-terrain crane was sent across the ocean to assist with a wind farm project. Verschoor Kraanverhuur, based in the Netherlands, purchased the crane from Manitowoc at Bauma 2013 in Munich, Germany, and almost immediately sent the 450-ton (400 t) crane to assist in wind farm maintenance in Curacao. The journey from Antwerp to Curacao took three weeks. The GMK6400 performed maintenance on three MW windmills at heights up to 263 ft. (80 m). Merijn Vermeij, operations manager of Verschoor, said the company chose the crane for its efficient set up and tear down process. “We chose the GMK6400 because we had to work with the crane at three different locations on the Island of Curacao,” Vermeij said. “This crane is very easy to move and to assemble and disassemble. A crawler crane would have taken much more time and would have been much more expensive.” The crane’s patented Megatrak independent suspension system also enabled it to maneuver at all three job sites with ease. “There is no crawler or mobile crane on the entire island of Curacao that is comparable to the GMK6400,” Vermeij said.

When rigged with the luffing jib that extends from 82 to 259 ft. (25 m to 79 m), the maximum tip height reaches 438 ft. (134 m). The GMK6400 is available with the self-rigging MegaWingLift attachment, Grove’s tensioning system that increases the crane’s capacity while the boom is working at a steep angle. In the past, such systems required an auxiliary crane to install, which is a more involved process with longer rigging times. However, on the GMK6400, the self-rigging MegaWingLift can be fitted in just 20 minutes. Grove’s new hybrid drive system, Megadrive, gives the crane both conventional and hydrostatic drive capabilities. With conventional drive, the crane employs the first and second axles; with hydrostatic drive, the hydraulically powered fourth and fifth axles are employed. The third and sixth axles utilize steer-by-wire technology. A single engine drive system on the GMK6400 drives both the carrier and superstructure. This reduces its overall weight and improves fuel economy. Manitowoc’s engineers reallocated the weight savings to other parts of the crane’s design, further boosting capacity. The GMK6400 was named the European Association of Abnormal Road Transport and Mobile Cranes (ESTA) Innovation Manufacturer of the Year at Bauma 2013 in Munich, Germany. About the Terex Superlift 3800 Crawler Crane The 716 ton (650 t) Terex Superlift 3800 lattice boom crawler crane features a maximum load moment of 9.3 tons (8.4 t) and is designed to provide its owners excellent return of investment. Every single component is designed for worldwide transportation and to reduce erection times and the need for additional equipment. A wide array of safety features, including the award winning Terex fall protection system, come standard. The Superlift 3800 crawler crane can be delivered with an integrated wind kit in a universal main boom system: the crane is capable to erect wind turbines of 384 ft. The Superlift 3800 is the first Terex crawler crane to feature the new cabin design. Providing operators with an excellent working environment, it was developed with extensive feedback gathered from customer workshops, leading industrial stylists and experts in ergonomics. The Superlift 3800 lattice boom crawler crane conforms to both the European norm EN 13000 and the U.S. standard ASME B30.5. It can lift a maximum load of 716 ton (650 t) at a radius of 16 to 39 ft. ( 5 to 12 m).
