Grove GMK6300L Deftly Dodges Chicago’s Notorious Rush Hour When James McHugh Construction Co. set about planning the erection of a Potain tower crane for a 44-story residential and parking facility in downtown Chicago, the company knew it needed a mobile crane that could maneuver easily, circumventing traffic and other city impediments. The mobile crane also needed a long enough boom to reach skyscraper heights. The Grove GMK6300L — the first to be used in North America — was a natural choice to get the Potain MD 485 B ready for work on the $111-million site. Paul Treacy, superintendent for McHugh, said that with its mobility and extralong boom reach, the GMK6300L is ideal for city projects. “Chicago construction regulations mandate that cranes can’t be on the streets during rush hour. We knew that with the GMK6300L, we could easily move and set up the crane at the job site without breaching traffic laws,” he said. “A key reason for this is the exceptionally long boom on the GMK6300L, which meant for rigging the Potain we didn’t need a jib. For other cranes to get similar reach, you have to swing the jib in and set up the crane again, which costs considerable amounts of time.” The GMK6300L’s five-axle MEGATRAK independent, hydro-pneumatic suspension system and all-wheel drive made it easy to navigate Chicago’s city streets. Also on board the crane is the ECOS electronic crane operating system, which programs essential duties and supplies information to the operator; and EKS 5, which monitors lifting conditions and provides a full graphic display of telescoping percentage and load charts. A choice of five outrigger positions gives the GMK6300L more flexibility than any other in its class, according to the manufacturer. “We’re lucky to have the experience of the first GMK6300L in North America,” Treacy said. “With its lengthy boom, dynamic suspension and heavy lifting capacity, it seems no job will be too tall, too rugged or too heavy for this machine.” The Potain MD 485 B tower crane will provide all the main lifting assistance for the high-rise job. “Having the SMDM trolley on the MD 485 B is a huge advantage for us,” Treacy said. “It’s very quick to change from a two-part line to a four-part line, depending on the lifting requirements.” To rig the tower crane, the GMK6300L lifted its mast and jib sections, weighing between 8,500 and 9,000 lbs. (3,855 and 4,082 kg). The GMK6300L’s sevensection, 262-ft. (80-m) boom allows for exceptionally heavy lifts, while the Megaform shaping offers greater rigidity and the Twin-Lock pinning makes for a lighter boom design, which allows greater loads to be lifted, according to the manufacturer. A Grove RT880 rough-terrain crane also worked on assembly of the Potain tower crane and that crane is still on the project. When setup of the MD 485 B tower crane was completed, the rough-terrain crane set about pouring concrete, placing formwork, hoisting mechanical equipment, lifting structural steel and performing other job site services. The RT880 has a boom of 127 ft. (39 m) that can be extended to 231 ft. (70.7 m) when using the full complement of jib attachments. All three cranes were recommended and leased to James McHugh Construction Co. by Central Contractors Service in Chicago, a member of the ALL Erection & Crane Rental Corp. family of Companies. Central used its 3D Lift Plan technology to visualize and plan the erection of the tower crane on the site. The job in Chicago is set to finish February 2014. CQ 11

Rolling Hills: A ‘Wind-Win’ in Iowa towers between 262 and 279 ft. (79 and 85 m). The 16000WA crawler cranes are quick and easy to assemble and disassemble and are easy to transport, according to the manufacturer. That came in handy on the Rolling Hills site, where experienced crews from Dawes have been onsite since the job began to disassemble, move and reassemble the cranes around the site as the turbines go up. Scott Jerome, senior branch manager at the Dawes Kaukauna branch, said that Dawes’ expert crews have been moving not only their own cranes for Mortenson, but also a few other machines on the site. “Countless moves so far have been done safely, cost effectively, and in time frames meeting or exceeding Mortenson’s requirements,” Jerome added. Dawes’ three 16000s at Rolling Hills were configured with 292 ft. (89 m) of main boom and a 24.9-ft. (7.5 m) extended upper boom point, or wind tip. In addition, the Model 16000WA offers superior line pull, which offers power and speed for wind turbine installation. The 16000’s line pull is 35,000 lbs. — the best in its class. The wind attachment eliminates the need for longer fixed or luffing jibs. With a luffing jib, the cut-off wind speed for safe operation is much lower than that of just a boom and wind tip. The use of luffing jibs can often cause delays when erecting wind turbines, as by its very nature, the work takes place in windy locations.
Want to see which way the renewable energy wind is blowing? Check with Iowa. No longer a novel sight, wind farms in Iowa are becoming as commonplace as the windy farmland on which they are built. And Mortenson Construction, partnered with Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental, brings the power to raise many of them. As of June 2011, the U.S. Department of Energy ranked Iowa second in the country with respect to installed wind power capacity, with 3,675 megawatts currently in service. Only Texas has more, at 10,135 megawatts of installed capacity. The Rolling Hills Wind Energy Center project in Massena, in southwestern Iowa, is the largest wind turbine project ever built in the state of Iowa and one of the largest in the country. Consisting of 193 wind turbines each with a rated output of 2.3 megawatts (mW), the Energy Center’s maximum capacity will be 444 mW, which is enough energy to power 190,000 homes. A $425 million project, Rolling Hills was developed and is owned by MidAmerican Energy of Des Moines, Iowa. The project contractor is Minneapolis-based Mortenson Construction, considered one of the premier wind turbine erection contractors in the country. The company proudly refers to Rolling Hills as their “Century Project,” meaning it is their 100th wind farm project and the largest so far. Crane Power for Wind Power From a distance they look like giant toy pinwheels, but the huge turbines take months to erect and require some heavy-duty lifting power. In this case, the power came from Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental Corp., headquartered in Milwaukee, Wis., a proud member of The ALL Family of Companies. Mortenson hired Dawes to supply nine cranes, including three Manitowoc 16000WA (wind attachment) crawlers, the premier crane for wind turbine construction. All of the 193 wind turbines for the Rolling Hills project are Siemens model SWT 2.3-101. The nacelle, which sits atop the tower and includes most of the working parts of the turbine, weighs 90 tons (82 t). The erected hub height — the distance from the turbine base to the rotor shaft — is 262 ft. (79 m). The rotor weighs 68 tons (62 t), and the tower itself weighs 178 tons (162 t). Each blade is 161 ft. (49 m) long, and the overall rotor diameter is 331 ft. (100 m). These huge wind turbines are nearly twice the height of Niagara Falls, so it’s no small feat to erect even one. Dawes brought some true beef from the ALL Family fleet to do the lifting, starting with the three 440ton (399 t) Manitowoc 16000WA crawlers.
Rounding Out the Crane Cast: Two Manitowoc 2250 Series III crawlers — 300 ton (272 t). Used to unload all heavy wind turbine components at each turbine location, the 2250s also are used to set the base and lower tower sections. The 2250 has been the most-used erection machine for placing the can base and lower can (tower sections) at wind turbine sites nationwide since the advent of the 1.5-mW turbine 10 years ago. One Manitowoc 888 Series II crawler — 230 ton (208 t). The 888 is being used at the wind turbine lay-down yard to unload and reload turbine components as they come in and also for distribution on the project site. The 888 is also used as a failsafe for hub and rotor construction at individual turbine sites that have space limitations or where traveling with the load is required. Two Grove RT875E rough terrain cranes (75 ton) and one Link-Belt RTC8090 Series II rough terrain crane (75 ton) These RT cranes perform general on-site lifting and are also used for tailing the hub/rotor lift. They also are used during the civil phase of the project to construct the concrete foundations for the turbines.
The Manitowoc 16000 Wind Attachment Manitowoc introduced the WA, or wind attachment, for the Manitowoc 16000 in 2010. The attachment uses the base 16000 model crane, adds a little more counterweight, a couple of heavier-duty boom inserts and a stronger extended upper boom point (often referred to as the wind tip) for a new configuration to give the crane significantly enhanced lift capability — by up to 40 percent — when working at short radii, as is often required in wind turbine erection. Erecting these large turbines requires cranes with greater capacity and reach, which is exactly what the Manitowoc 16000WA wind attachment offers. It allows the same 16000 model to lift and install anything from the older and smaller 1.5-mW turbines to the newer 2.5-mW and larger wind turbines on
Great Partners for Great Projects “Dawes and the great renewable energy group team at Mortenson have developed an extraordinary working partnership,” said Scott Jerome. “I’m sure they’d tell you that Dawes has supplied them with the latest model ‘state of the lifting art’ cranes for this high profile project and that Dawes offers top-notch support every step of the way.” As part of the ALL Family of Companies, Dawes offers the most technologically advanced cranes in the industry, all meticulously maintained in ALL and Dawes’ own service shops. Lift planning service is always free to customers, often employing ALL’s 3D Lift Plan lift simulation and planning software from A1A Software. The 3D Lift Plan 12

All Erection & Crane Rental Corp. Builds Wind Turbine in Four Days
A Manitowoc 16000 crawler crane and a Grove GMK5120B all-terrain crane were chosen to erect the 2.5 MW turbine. Both units belong to All Erection & Crane Rental Corp.
Following completion of the $5.9 million project, Lincoln Electric staged an inauguration ceremony to celebrate its success. George Blankenship, president of Lincoln Electric North America, said the wind turbine symbolizes some important values at the company, so it was important that assembly work was conducted to the highest standards. “This project has been three years in the making and embodies our company’s commitment to renewables and the wind tower industry,” he said. “It was therefore essential that the tower was erected efficiently and to the highest standards of quality. The cranes on this job performed admirably and everything ran smoothly and on time.” A third crane, a 30-ton (27 t) RT530E-2 from Grove’s rough-terrain range, also was used in the early stages of construction for land preparation. Manitowoc’s 16000 is a 440-ton (399 t) capacity crawler crane, and on the Lincoln Electric project, All Erection & Crane Rental Corp., rigged the crane with 157 ft. (48 m) of main boom and 177 ft. (54 m) of luffing jib. The crane is able to accommodate a maximum of 432 ft. (131 m) of main boom. All Erection sent the crane to site on 22 trucks. The Grove GMK5120B is a 120-ton (109 t) capacity all-terrain crane with a 167 ft. (51 m) boom that is mounted on a five-axle carrier. CQ
Two Manitowoc cranes installed a wind tower in Cleveland over a four-day period earlier this year. The 443 ft. (135 m) turbine is located outside the headquarters of Lincoln Electric, a world leader in arc welding and a long-term supplier to the wind tower industry. The turbine is one of the largest urban wind towers in North America and will provide up to 10 percent of the energy used at Lincoln Electric’s manufacturing plant, saving an estimated $500,000 a year in energy costs. A Manitowoc 16000 crawler crane and a Grove GMK5120B all-terrain crane were chosen to erect the 2.5 MW turbine. Both units belong to All Erection & Crane Rental Corp., the largest lifting equipment rental and sales company in North America. The first task on the project was off-loading and erecting the four tower sections from their delivery trucks. These sections were lifted and then walked into position by the Model 16000, with the GMK5120B providing tailing support. Each section weighed approximately 70 tons (63.5 t). With the tower sections installed, the cranes then worked together to install the 99-ton (90 t) nacelle and drive train, which was handled in two lifts. Finally, three rotor blades were bolted together at ground level before the entire 64-ton (58 t) assembly was carefully lifted into place. 14

National Crane NBT45 Lifts Huge Oil Tanks Into Place in Alberta
Barden Oil Field Hauling recently added a National Crane NBT45 boom truck to its fleet of haul trucks.
Barden Oil Field Hauling recently added a National Crane NBT45 boom truck to its fleet of haul trucks. The NBT45 is mounted on a tridrive, dual-steer Kenworth C500 semi-tractor. Barry Anderson, owner of Barden Oil Field Hauling, near Alberta, Canada, said the combination of the NBT45 on the semi-tractor is valuable because it allows them to lift and transport loads with one vehicle. “Having a crane that can also haul is a huge cost savings for our customers,” he said. “Without this feature, we would need a separate truck to haul equipment, and that adds to the cost of the job significantly.” In addition, the latest environmental regulations in the oil fields require crane operators to place equipment from a longer radius. With the NBT45, Anderson says they can now work at radius 30 ft. (9 m) longer than their previous boom truck. “With the NBT45, we don’t need to move and reposition the crane as much,” he said. “We can now reach almost 90 ft. (27.4 m) to place tanks and other equipment, instead of the 60 ft. (18.2) radius that was our maximum reach before adding this crane to our fleet.” A typical job for Barden is hauling and placing 400-barrel oil tanks. For this type of job, crews also must haul and install about one hundred rig mats, which measure 8 ft. by 40 ft., (2.4 m by 12 m) and weigh 9,000 lbs. (4,082 kg). The oil tanks themselves are 20 ft. (6 m) tall and weigh between 12,000 and 14,000 lbs. (5,443 kg to 6,350 kg). Barden worked closely with its National Crane dealer, Strongco, to have the NBT45 mounted on the semi-tractor. The crane has worked so well for them in the field that they have recently purchased a second tractor-mounted NBT45. The second one will be mounted on a lighter semi-tractor to allow for more payload to be hauled. CQ

Being the first Italian soccer team to own its home venue, the Juventus club inaugurated its brand-new stadium with a ground-breaking exhibition match officially opened by Juventus President, Andrea Agnelli, and Mayor of Turin, Sergio Chiamparino, for the start of the 2011-2012 football season on Sept. 8, 2011. Unknown to the club’s enthusiastic fans, completing the new stadium in time for the big day had largely depended on three years of dedicated work handled by the Vernazza Autogru s.r.l. lifting team with the help of eight Terex all-terrain cranes. The new “Juventus Arena” replaces the previous Del Alpi Stadium built for the 1990 World Cup. As Diego Vernazza, owner and director of Vernazza Autogru explained, “When we first began the job in 2009, it was difficult to visualize the stadium fully completed and we were aware that it was going to be a tough challenge.” Effectively built on the same site as the existing grounds, the first step of the work entailed clearing the previous building before construction could begin. “This basically meant working flat out, virtually non-stop for three years, and we can say that the cranes served us well,” said Vernazza. Dismantling and removing individual components of the existing building’s framework meant moving in close and handling high lifts repeatedly day after day for long hours. “Our lighter capacity class cranes’ excellent maneuverability and long, rapidly deployable telescopic booms were a great asset. They helped our crew gain valuable time and made it easier to access tight

Cranes’ Narrow Widths Deemed Perfect for Lifting Prefabricated Components out to be perfect in lifting prefabricated components at short radius, even in some very tight areas,” said Vernazza. The much larger 771-ton (700 t) capacity class Terex AC 700 was reserved to lift heavier prefabricated steel and concrete structural components, and notably to hoist the stadium’s roof elements including four gigantic curved steel masts that crown the new construction with the colors of Italy’s national flag. “Each mast was 295 ft. (90 m) long and weighed 385 tons (350 t). Our AC 700 provided the lifting power and maneuverability we needed to handle a heavy yet delicate task. By lifting the masts using supporting spars like derricks, we were able to raise them to the exact angle before hoisting them into their final position,” reported Vernazza. For the Vernazza Autogru team, this marked one of the final lifts of a successfully completed, long, high-pressure mission. “Our Terex cranes served us reliably from start to finish for a memorable three years of solid hard work,” said Vernazza. The reward: He was present at the first match in the new stadium in September 2011. The Terex all-terrain range includes models from the 45-ton (40 t) to 1,320-ton (1,200 t) capacity class.

New LTM 1750-9.1 All-Terrain Crane Features Portable Telescopic Boom On June 13 and 14, at the production plant at Ehingen, Germany, Liebherr presented the new LTM 1750-9.1 all-terrain crane to more than 2,000 customers from all over the world. The 826-ton (750 t) mobile crane complements the Liebherr range between the highly successful models LTM 1500-8.1 and LTM 11200-9.1. One particular feature of the new nine-axle machine -is the fact that the complete telescopic boom can be carried when travelling on public roads. And to help make operation even more economical worldwide, account was taken in the design concept of the LTM 1750-9.1 of the very widely differing transport weights and axle load variations. Another point of focus in the design was a particularly short set-up times. A broad range of equipment options means that the new LTM 17509.1 has a particularly wide operational spectrum. With the 170 ft. (52 m) long telescopic boom, the telescopic boom Y-guying system and an array of different lattice jibs, the crane has a large number of different boom systems available, and can achieve heights under hook of up to 505 ft. (154 m) and outreaches of up to 367 ft .(112 m). The LTM 1750-9.1 travels with its 170-ft. (52 m) telescopic boom, the front supports, an auxiliary support on the rear, and a complete hoist gear with a gross weight of 119 tons (108 t) at an axle load of 13.2 tons (12 t). Some countries, however, only allow for a gross weight of 109 tons (99 t) with an axle load of 12 tons (11 t). These limitations can still be respected by the new LTM 1750-9.1 if all the supports are taken off. As an alternative, the telescopic boom can be removed. And in order for the LTM 1750-9.1 to be driven on public roads in countries with even
more restrictive regulations, the new crane can be dismantled to reduced gross weights of less than 44 tons (40 t). When the LTM 1750-9.1 arrives on-site with its telescopic boom and the front supports, it can fit the rear supports itself, without the need for an auxiliary crane. All the crane functions for working operations are powered by the engine in the superstructure. In the event of a problem with the superstructure drive, all the crane functions can then be driven by the engine in the chassis, simply by rearranging the plugging of just three electrical connections. This innovation has been introduced for the first time on the new LTM 1750-9.1. Powerful travel drive in the carrier of the LTM 1750-9.1 is ensured by an eight-cylinder Liebherr Diesel engine, rated at 680 hp/500 kW. The four rear axles of the nine-axle chassis are actively steered electrohydraulically and speed-dependent. In crab steering mode, all nine axles are steered, which means there is no longer any need for axles to be raised. The Liebherr four-cylinder in-line engine in the crane superstructure delivers 367 hp/ 270 kW and a torque of 1,720 Nm. The crane drive, which is provided with power steering and power regulation, is a diesel hydraulic system with five axial piston adjustment pumps. The winches and the slewing gear are operated in a closed circuit to achieve maximum fine sensitivity. Four operating movements are possible simultaneously. CQ

They are available in both electric and hydraulic versions and starting with the 4,000 lb. (1,814 kg) model they will be offered with up to 25 ft. (7.6 m) of reach. The design process for these new models integrates many of the same features as the current line of PSC cranes that was released in 2010. These new PALFINGER cranes offer superior lift-to-weight ratios and hydraulic reaches with lifting capacities ranging from 12,500 ft.-lbs. (1.66 t) to 38,500 ft.-lbs. (5.14 t). All PSC models will be assembled onsite at the Council Bluffs, Iowa facility. Their new features include: • PALFINGER’s proprietary hexagonal boom design that eliminates boom sway while adding stability during long reaches • Winch integrated two block damage prevention system eliminating cords and reels to end of the boom tip • Wireless remote control standard on all models with manual override controls • Two powered extensions with internal cylinders offered optionally • Maintenance-free extension system • ECOAT Paint
• SAE hoses with JIC fittings provide easy field maintenance • North American manufacturing, service and support at our Council Bluffs, Iowa facility Omaha Standard PALFINGER, established in 1926, is a manufacturer of service/utility bodies, platform bodies, hydraulic hoists, hydraulic liftgates, mechanics trucks and other equipment for commercial trucks and markets its products through more than 175 truck equipment distributors across the country, as well as in Mexico and Canada. These new partnerships give PALFINGER the additional product lines, multiple truck chassis pools and a distribution network that meet the demands of key industries throughout North and Latin America. The PALFINGER North America Group, features five manufacturing locations, 10 wholly owned distribution locations, and a dedicated staff of more than 600 employees who service the North and Latin American market.
