Versatile Terex Tower Crane Proves Its Lifting Prowess on German Job The Terex CTT 161 tower crane had more than proven its worth during the first stage of new construction for the Matthias-Claudius-Haus nursing home in Waldshut, Germany, so Waldshut-Tiengen-based construction company Schleith insisted on the use of a Terex crane for the second stage of construction as well. The subcontractor in charge, Lörrach-based Meier-Krantechnik, complied with the request and proceeded to order a Terex CTT 162-8 tower crane, the successor to the CTT 161. “That was the first project where they’d be using the new crane, so we made sure to be there at the work site with our own assembly team in order to provide guidance and support,” said Jörg Körtgen, sales manager of Terex Cranes. The reason why this was important was that the CTT 162-8 crane, which was just launched in mid-2015, offers a series of new features and enhancements in comparison to its predecessor. Accordingly, Terex Cranes refers to this model as a new crane generation. The CTT 162-8 crane is a flat top tower crane with an 8.8-ton (8 t) maximum-capacity winch. It rests on a 15 ft. (4.5 m) cruciform base, and its typical applications include not only residential and commercial construction, but also industrial and bridge construction, making it an extremely versatile all-rounder. “We ordered the crane with a 180-foot jib length configuration and erected it with a hook height of 111.5 feet for the project in Waldshut, which was necessary due to the site’s hillside position,” explained Martin Käser, construction manager of Schleith. The range of tasks that the tower crane takes care of at the work site ranges from the material handling work that is typical of work sites and involves moving concrete, formwork and iron to removing excavated material to moving mini-excavators and other machinery. “With its maximum capacity of [9 tons], the crane is so powerful that we don’t need to use a mobile crane at all, which makes the CTT 162-8 extremely cost-effective. In fact, it’s even able to lift large precast concrete components without a problem,” said Thomas Meier, general manager of Meier Krantechnik.

The CTT 162-8 crane, which was just launched in mid-2015, offers a series of new features and enhancements.

A True 176-Ton Crane “The CTT 162-8 tower crane is the real deal — a true [176-ton] crane that can lift at the tip exactly what the specifications say,” said Jörg Körtgen, getting right to the point. As far as he is concerned, the CTT-162 crane represents a quantum leap in engineering — and he can prove it. When directly compared with its predecessor, the new machine offers at least 220 lbs. (100 kg) more capacity along the entire length of the jib, and it also features a hoisting winch that is faster by a good 30 percent. In other words, the new crane makes it possible to lift a considerably higher number of loads per day. And that is only the beginning. The crane comes with a large series of upgrades. These include, for instance, a new cab, extremely weatherresistant stainless steel control panels, and a remote assistant service that enables the customer and Terex to run remote diagnostics worldwide, ensuring that when a customer runs into an issue, it will be fixed as quickly as possible.

The range of tasks that the tower crane takes care of at the work site includes material handling, removing excavated material and moving mini-excavators and other machinery. 12

The CTT 162-8 crane is a flat top tower crane with an 8.8-ton (8 t) maximum-capacity winch.

Simple, Practical, Good All these features won the customer over as well. “If you asked me to describe the crane in just a few words, I would say it’s simple, practical, and good,” Martin Käser said. Admittedly, however, that was the very outcome he was already expecting. For more information, visit www.Terex.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Manhattan Road & Bridge Uses Grove GHC75 for Drilled-Shaft Installation Nearly eight years ago, three Oklahoma and Arkansas construction companies combined forces to become Manhattan Road & Bridge. The owners of the original businesses wanted to do larger projects, and partnering allowed them to accomplish that goal. In the past seven years, Manhattan Road & Bridge’s portfolio of projects totaled close to $1 billion worth of work in the governmental, private, railroad, bridge and port and dock sectors. Manhattan Road & Bridge is based in Tulsa, Okla., and has offices in Oklahoma City, Little Rock and Springdale, Ark., as well as Fort Myers, Fla. The company offers general contracting as well as design-build and construction management. Its extensive list of services involves turnkey road and bridge projects, bridge-repair services and pile-driving capacities of any design. Manhattan Road & Bridge’s territory covers Arkansas, southern Kansas, northern Texas, Oklahoma and Florida. Recent projects include work along Interstate 35 in the Norman, Okla., area where the company installed drilled shafts for high-mast light poles. Each shaft measured nearly 36-ft. (11 m) deep and 54 in. (137 cm) in diameter. “After digging a pilot hole, we used a Grove GHC75 crane with a hammer attached to drive the casing into the hole,” said Landry Logan project manager. “When that was done, we finished drilling and used the crane to set steel. Then, we poured concrete to a certain height and pulled the casing out.”

out on recent projects was approximately 85 ft. (26 m) of boom. “Everything was well within the crane’s capabilities,” Nunez said. “The machine tells you how much boom you have out and how much you can pick, so you don’t have to use a load chart. There’s no guessing. I really liked running it, and the comfort was very good.” Grove designed the operator cab to deliver maximum comfort while incorporating conveniently located joystick controls for precise operation. The cab tilts up to 20 degrees and comes equipped with a ratedcapacity limiter, air-suspension seat, color monitor for up to four cameras and precise climate control. “The joystick controls make it easy to run,” said operator Chris Mitchell. “It’s comfortable, with plenty of leg room and good visibility to see the pick. The crane has excellent maneuverability and mobility. Overall, I’m impressed.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Easy Transport Manhattan rented the 70-ton (63.5 t)-capacity Grove GHC75 crawler for that project from Kirby-Smith Machinery, working with Todd York, crane division account manager. The crane features a robust, four-section main boom that extends from 36 to 118 ft. (11 to 36 m) and can telescope under load. A standard 26-ft. 3-in. (8 m) offsettable swingaway boom extension has offsets at zero, 20 and 40 degrees. The GHC75 has a maximum tip height of 151 ft. (46 m) with the main boom and extension. “We used the crane on a similar project in Oklahoma City,” recalled Logan. “The drill shafts there were 60 inches in diameter and from 36to 58-feet deep. The GHC75 easily handled the workload, but the biggest advantages were mobility and quick set up. We didn’t have to break down the crane to transport it. We just loaded it up on a trailer and moved to the next stop.” The GHC75 is so portable that it can be easily moved to another location in one or two loads. The upper counterweight is removed or installed hydraulically, and the carbody counterweight installs easily via a self-assembly system. The crane’s compact design provides greater versatility to work on a wide variety of projects and job sites. “One load was all it took for us to move to the next place,” Logan said. “We kept the counterweight on during transport. That meant quick setup and a short turnaround time to begin production once we got to a new location.”

Maeda Mini-Crane Scores Big Goal at New Orlando Soccer Stadium Custom steel fabricator and erector, Unlimited Welding Inc. purchased a new MC305CRME-2 mini-crane for the hoisting and installation of large stairwell sections in the new Orlando City Soccer Stadium currently under construction. They also will utilize it for other specialty steel structures and railings. The MC305 was tasked to operate in very confined workspaces within the upper deck areas. To move the MC305 into position in the workspace was a task in itself. The contractor fabricated a custom designed platform for the MC305, so that it could be hoisted to the upper level of the stadium using a larger mobile crane from the ground. Once at the work level, the MC305 was easily and safely transferred from the platform and into position to begin hoisting stairwell sections. Using the MC305, the contractor could then work independently on its part of the project, saving time and money, without relying on a large mobile crane from the ground. Maeda USA assisted the contractor in advance, with ground pressure and outrigger force data so that the structural engineers could approve of the MC305 working on the stadium deck. At a weight of 9,100 lbs. (4,128 kg), the MC305 is considerably lighter than other conventional cranes, such as a carry-deck style crane. The small size and “turn in place maneuverability of the MC305 meant continued on page 20

Stephenson Equipment Saves Lenick Construction Time, Money in Philly When Lenick Construction first bid this job it did not know about self-erecting tower cranes like the pair of Potain Igo T130’s now on the Hanover at North Broad Project located on North Broad and Callowhill streets in Center City Philadelphia. Dan Petrucelli, vice president of construction of Lenick Construction, said “We saw a Potain T85A set up on a building job as we were driving along the Schuylkill and were curious. We heard of potential savings using self-erecting tower cranes and with a quick phone call we were in contact with Darin D’Ascanio of Stephenson Equipment Inc. [SEI]. “After meeting with D’Ascanio, Lenick Construction rented the Potain T85A to erect the Isles in Manayunk, a 156 luxury apartment complex located on the heart of Main Street in Manayunk. Using the Potain proved beneficial, the project went very smooth and was completed under budget and much quicker than anticipated. With this first experience under its belt, Lenick knew that it had to use the Potains on the Hanover at North Broad Project. “Stephenson has been awesome to work with. Before contacting Darin, we didn’t have a relationship with SEI. They are great at the whole package from set-up to logistics and we really appreciate their willingness to spend time with us on planning at the job site,” Petrucelli said. Petrucelli added that SEI even trained Lenick’s operators for certification at their facility in Philadelphia.

The Potain T85A reaches heights up to 167 ft. (51 m) and can reach out to 148 ft. (45 m) with a max capacity at 148 ft. of 3,086 lbs. (1,400 kg). The Potain T130 can reach heights up to 200 ft. (61 m) and reach out to 164 ft. (50 m). The T130’s max capacity at 164 ft. is 3,086 lbs. Both cranes have the ability to offset the jib to 30 degrees. Lenick Construction, based out of Jamison, Pa., was established in 1972 and is constructing the two buildings situated on the corners of North Broad and Callowhill streets. The five story buildings will consist of 339 apartment units on top of a PTC Podium with community and retail space underneath the podium deck. Lenick has been on the project since May of 2016 using the Potain tower cranes to move and set all the wood, windows, wall panels and floor joists. As of late August, the T130 had begun to pick roofing materials up to the larger of the two buildings at the southwest corner of Broad and Callowhill. A third Stephenson Potain T85A was expected to be on the job site soon to assist. The capabilities and efficiencies of the Stephenson tower cranes on this job are projected to save Lenick close to 50 percent in costs and man-hours over using traditional hydraulic cranes, according to Petrucelli. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

To be known as the “gateway” to Center City Philadelphia, Lenick Construction is hard at work on the second building of the Hanover at North Broad Project utilizing Stephenson’s Potain T130. 18

The narrow footprint of the Potain T130s can be seen here, looking down Callowhill toward Broad, still allowing traffic to flow while getting the job done.

Darin D’Ascanio (L) of Stephenson Equipment and Dan Petrucelli of Lenick Construction discuss the delivery logistics and set up of the Potain T85A on the Hanover at North Broad Project job site. Lenick workers unload roofing materials using Stephenson’s Potain T130 tower crane. Using the Potain tower cranes on the Hanover at North Broad Project is projected to save Lenick close to 50 percent in costs and man-hours over using traditional hydraulic cranes.

Remote-Controlled Maeda MC305 Stars in Orlando City Stadium Job from page 15

that setting up and traveling within the confines of stadium upper deck area was performed easily. Utilizing a compact MC305 meant that a large, expensive mobile crane, operating from ground level, would not be needed for the contractor’s installations. Several features on the MC305 were essential to working on this unique project and handling the loads safely. Operating by remote control — which comes standard with all Maeda mini-cranes — the operator was able to watch and control the stairwell sections being hoisted, while looking down over the edge of the openings. This allowed precise placement of the loads, and greatly increased safety, by not having to operate in the blind over radios. The Maeda OEM Moment Limiter Safety System and Display, with load charts programmed in, also aided the operator in making sure all loads were well within the MC305’s capacity. This operator aid, in conjunction with Maeda’s integral Outrigger Interlock Safety System, and Anti-2-Block device, make Maeda mini-cranes the safest and most advanced mini-cranes on the market today. The MC305 was once again, the right tool for the job at the stadium. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

New Link-Belt 298 Series 2 Offers Easy Luffing Attachment, New Base Section • “Point of use” storage provisions for all components • Stop bolts for quick pin alignment A new luffing jib transport package with lifting lugs simplifies and expedites luffer assembly. The rear post will scissor into place by means of alignment links. The transport package also comes assembled with nylon rope reeving to assist with initial luffing jib wire rope hoist reeving. Once the rear post is in working position, all luffing jib pendant connections are made and the luffer is ready to be raised for work. All assembly is done from the ground with no work at height exposure.

Link-Belt Construction Equipment introduces the new 250-ton (226t) 298 Series 2 lattice crawler crane, built upon its highly successful jobproven predecessor, the 298 HSL. “We believe the new transport package and combination boom tip absolutely completes our customers’ wish list, and the 298 HSL Series 2 continues to deliver great capacities,” said Scott Knight, Link-Belt product manager, lattice and telescopic crawler cranes. Since its initial introduction in 2007, the 298 HSL has been placed in rental fleets across the globe — from dry docks in Brazil to tunnel construction projects in Queens, New York, N.Y., logging over 12,000 hours in just two and a half years.

Conventional Lift Crane The 298 Series 2 also features a new base section and 12 in. (30.48 cm) wide boom walkway. Bar pendants with storage brackets replace dual wire rope pendants. A newly designed retractable auxiliary lifting sheave has a capacity of 25-ton (22.67 t) and offers two parts of line. Conventional boom length will remain the same as the 298 HSL at 60 ft. to 290 ft. (18.2 to 88.39 m). The maximum tip height of boom and jib [250 ft. + 90 ft. (76.2 + 27.43 m)] is 342 ft. 3.2 in. (104.32 m).

Luffing Attachment The new boom design is the capstone of the 298 Series 2 and allows the working combination boom tip section to remain in place when transitioning from conventional mode to luffer with a maximum combination of 180 ft. (54.8 m) of luffing boom and 195 ft. (59.4 m) of luffing jib. In order to provide quick conversion from conventional style lifting to a luffing configuration, assembly has been simplified with the advent of the following: • Semi-bore weldments for pin locations

Additional Features The 298 Series 2 will come with a Cummins QSL 9 Tier IV engine. According to the company, greater fuel efficiency is just one of the benefits offered with the ECO winch system, resulting in lowered operating cost, less engine RPM under load and fewer emissions. When activated by the operator, ECO hoist provides maximum line speed with lighter loads all with the engine under 1,000 RPM. Also, standard equipped is operator-selectable “auto-engine shutdown” allowing the engine to shut down after extended periods of inactivity, so long as critical operating criteria are met. The crane operator is assisted by an on-board high-resolution rear view camera that helps monitor jobsite conditions. An audio/visual travel alarm system informs crew members on the ground. The RCL monitoring system provides the operator all lift information, is extremely intuitive and allows the operator to set swing and other control parameters creating virtual walls with audio, visual alarms and function kick out. For more information, visit www.linkbelt.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) The 298 Series 2 also features a new base section and 12 in. (30.48 cm) wide boom walkway.
