CRANEFEST 2018 Link-Belt Fetes Guests With New Products and More
ink-Belt Cranes held CraneFest 2018 Oct. 1 to 5 at its world headquarters in Lexington, Ky. Throughout the week, groups of approximately 200 to 250 representatives from the company’s dealer network, rental houses and end users attended two-day sessions to learn about the latest from Link-Belt Cranes and to network with peers and Link-Belt representatives. CraneFest is held every three years, taking place in alternating years between ConExpo and timed to connect with dealers and customers and introduce company’s latest cranes, products and services. On the evening of arrival, guests were bused to Lexington’s historic Distillery District to mix and mingle during a cocktail reception, which was followed by dinner at the Grand Reserve restaurant. Each night, guest speakers were brought in to entertain the crowd with talks about Louisville’s history as the birthplace of bourbon and the center for horse racing and breeding in the United States. The following morning, CraneFest attendees were bused to the Link-Belt Company world headquarters and manufacturing facility for a fast-paced and fully packed day of activities. After opening remarks from Link-Belt’s executive team, an introduction of the company’s department managers, and a short video presentation outlining Link Belt’s history, development and accomplishments, attendees were taken on a guided tour of the company’s manufacturing facility. After the tour, attendees we led outside to a staging area for a live presentation of LinkBelt’s product line, including several new models. One highlight of the equipment presentations was the introduction of Link-Belt’s new 100RT rough-terrain crane, which features the longest full-power boom available.

IMPORTS TO INDIA W
hen Sarens was recruited to perform a series of challenging lifts at India’s Ramagundam Fertilizer Plant, the team imported a Demag CC 8800-1 lattice boom crawler crane all the way from Greece to get the job done. Commissioned by the RFCL (Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd.), through the project’s EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contractor, Bridge and Roof Company Ltd., Sarens was responsible for lifting heavy equipment to aid with the construction of the Ramagundam Fertilizer Plant. The project involves the construction of a new ammonia plant and a new urea plant with capacities of 2,425 tons (2,200 t) per day and 4,244 tons (3,850 t) per day, respectively, as well as developing an ancillary offsite and utility facilities. In total, approximately $750 million will be invested into the project when it’s completed in late 2018/early 2019. Once completed the plant will produce 1.2 million tons (1.12 million t) of urea annually.
Need for a Massive Crane When the Sarens team began reviewing the project, they quickly determined it would take a large crane, like the company’s 1,763 ton (1,600 t) capacity Demag CC 8800-1 crawler crane to complete the job. For the first, and one of the most challenging lifts, Sarens needed to lift a 468 ton (425-t) urea reactor into place. “The Demag CC 8800-1 crawler crane is a highly versatile machine,” said Navneet Jain, Sarens regional deputy director, Asia Pacific. “In addition to being a good fit for this project, we have several other jobs happening in India that the crane can be used for. So, we decided that transporting it here from Greece was a good choice.”
Completing the First Challenging Lift The 468 ton (425-t) urea reactor measured 174 ft. (53 m) in length and 12.4 ft. (3.8 m) in diameter. To perform the lift, the reactor was upended with the CC 8800-1 crane in an SSL 84/72 configuration at a lift radius of 78.7 ft. (24 m). The CC 2800-1 assist crane was used in an SSL 54 configuration. After lifting the reactor, the CC 8800-1 crane operator slowly slewed and walked the heavy load into position. The 20-member crew battled rain, area constraints and narrow plant roads to complete this project’s first erection safely and within the target schedule. “Our team did a great job and earned high praise from the client,” said Jain. “However, there were several more lifts to be done, so the team got right back to work to ensure those were also completed in the stipulated time frame.”
Next Up The Demag CC 8800-1 crawler crane is scheduled to be at the Ramagundam Fertilizer Plant for another 40 days. The Sarens team will use it to execute five more key component erections, weighing up to 705 tons (640 t). “We are proud of our operations, fleet, engineering, logistics, sales, planning and support teams for getting the Demag CC 8800-1 crane to India, transporting swiftly and executing on this project safely and efficiently. We know we’ll get a lot of use from it in the future,” said Jain.

Reliability A Key Factor for Elmer W. Davis
O
n Oct. 5 Elmer W. Davis Inc. picked up its new 2018 Terex BT28106 boom truck from Empire Crane Company LLC in Syracuse, N.Y. The BT28106 will be the ninth Terex (fourth BT28106) in its continually growing crane fleet. Elmer W. Davis Inc., one of the largest roofing contractors in New York has become particularly fond of Terex cranes. Superintendent Damon Runyon expressed the “ease of service” with his Terex machines, saying they are “reliable cranes with almost no downtime.” With a 28 ton (25 t) capacity, 106 ft. (32 m) boom and 30 to 47 ft. (9 to 14 m) jib, the company has found the Terex BT28106 to be the crane for it. The BT28106 offers a modular, dual-control console for operation from either side of the crane, work area def-
inition and high-performance hydraulics. Fleet Manager Carl Benson said, “the boom length and jib length fits our roofing needs and the rapid mobility of a boom truck makes things a lot easier. We don’t have to worry about transportation or setup and take-down time.” The crane’s first job will be a roofing at the Wegmans Supermarket in Fairmount, N.Y.

CRANE TEREX
GROVE
Wilder, Ky.-based Maxim Crane Works has purchased 19 new cranes from the Grove rough-terrain and truck-mounted range, as well as the National Crane boom truck lines. A long-time Manitowoc customer, the company relies on its cranes for a variety of applications in the large construction and petrochemical industries. “A lifting company can only be as good as the tools it uses to complete the job,” said Frank Bardonaro, chief operating officer of Maxim Crane Works. “We’re especially enthusiastic about the Grove GRT8100 and NBT55L models. It’s clear these cranes are designed and built to not only be tougher than their predecessors, but also reflect the needs of the current lifting market.” The company’s purchase includes: eight Grove GRT8100 rough terrain cranes; three Grove TMS9000-2 truck-mounted cranes; and eight National Crane NBT55L boom truck cranes.
TEREX
Hydraulic Machinery in Tampa, Fla., sees a market demand for quality-built boom truck cranes. To keep up with that demand, the company recently added five boom trucks to its inventory. The order includes two Terex BT 5092; two Terex RS 70100; and one Terex BT 70100 boom trucks. The cranes have a maximum lift capacity range of 25 to 35 tons. The BT 5092 has a 92 ft. fully synchronous telescopic keel boom, while the RS 70100 and BT 70100 have a 100 ft., four-section synchronous telescopic keel boom.
SALES
N&A James Ltd., a family-owned crane rental and heavy haul company in Carmarthen, United Kingdom, recently took delivery of a Terex AC 40/2L all terrain crane. This model was chosen for its versatility and its ability to work in smaller spaces. This will help the growing business meet its customers’ needs. “We were pleasantly surprised with how fast Terex Cranes was able to help us identify the right model and deliver a new unit to our yard,” said Kevin Green, manager of N&A James. “Our Terex Cranes salesperson, Tim Leech, got us what we needed fast, and we appreciated that.”
DEMAG
When Catherine Hegarty, owner of Hegarty’s North Jersey Crane Services LLC, was looking to update the company’s fleet, she turned to Mike Andrews at Empire Crane Company. Due to capacity and reach, Hegarty selected a 2018 Demag AC 1305 all terrain crane. The crane was put to work soon after its arrival on a project setting trusses on a new apartment building. “It’s not our first purchase, and it will not be our last,” said Hegarty. “We love how personal their service is from their New Jersey location; you do not feel like just a number.”

DEMAG
The first new Demag AC 300-6 all terrain crane to be delivered to the United Kingdom was purchased by RRC Crane Hire Ltd. together with Road Rail Cranes Ltd. The company has locations throughout the U.K. The AC300-6 was chosen for the ability to rig quickly and it can carry 22.2 tons of counterweight. Ian Cross, managing director of RRC, said, “We knew the company would be successful if we employed highly-trained operators and equipped them with quality and innovative equipment. The Demag AC 300-6 all terrain crane exemplifies those standards and will be a great addition as we continue to grow as a company.”
DEMAG
Arrendo, an equipment dealer in Mexico City and Villahermosa, Mexico, has ordered the new Demag AC 300-6 all terrain crane; two Demag AC 100-4L cranes; and one Demag AC 500-8 all-terrain crane. Arrendo will be the first company in Mexico to purchase the 300-6, a 350-ton, 6-axle crane. According to the company, this model has features to improve efficiency and production, including the onboard IC-1 Plus control system which allows the operator to perform real-time calculations, which makes for safer crane operations. The two AC 100-4L models are compact and allow for work in dense urban environments. The AC 500-8 also is compact, and has a reach of 478.3 ft.
RECENT PURCHASES, DELIVERIES
W.O. Grubb Crane Rental of Virginia has taken delivery of a Demag AC 500-8 all terrain crane. “We are dedicated to giving customers the highest quality of value-added service available,” said Michelle GrubbSolaimani, CFO of W.O. Grubb Crane Rental. “To do that, we make it a point to carry the latest in crane innovation and the Demag AC 500-8 all terrain crane certainly fits that category.” The machine features the IC-1 Plus control system, as well as sideways superlift (SSL) for a superior lifting performance, according to the manufacturer.
TEREX
To fill a need of loading and unloading trucks, Ernst Müller, maintenance manager of Galvaswiss, a metal preservation company in Switzerland, purchased a Terex RT 45 rough terrain crane. Terex Cranes’ Christian Kassner, senior sales manager, handled the acquisition. “Everything went perfectly smooth — from our visit to the manufacturing plant in Crespellano, through the way the contract terms were drawn up, to the on-time handover,” said Müller. Terex also offers an after-sales support program for its products.
