Richard McCann, Founder of Warm Temps Boost McCann Industries, Passes Road Construction Numbers 4 Percent

Richard J. “Dick” McCann, of Wheaton, passed away peacefully in his home March 12. He was 73. Mr. McCann was born and raised in DeKalb, Ill. He was married to his loving wife, Lynn for 53 years. They were blessed with five children and eight grandchildren. Mr. McCann treasured the many hours he spent with his Richard J. “Dick” McCann, founder of McCann Industries Inc., passed away peacefully in his home March 12. He was 73.

His greatest joy was being a husband, father and grandfather and leading his family fearlessly on many fun-filled adventures. In 1967, with $1,500 borrowed from his father-in-law, Mr. McCann started McCann Construction Specialties Company in a one-car garage in Villa Park, Ill. The real value of highway construction was up 4.3 percent in January 2013 compared to January 2012, according to the latest analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). “Weather is the driving force behind the value of transportation work in January, which can be volatile,” said ARTBA Chief Economist Alison Premo Black. “With warmer than average temperatures across the country, many contractors were able to get more work done on transportation projects, providing a market boost early this year.” While the recent uptick in highway construction is positive news for a sector that saw a four percent dip in activity see CONSTRUCTION page 58

3M Traffic Safety and Security Division will once again make a major financial contribution to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Foundation’s “Lanford Family Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship Program,” which provides post-high school financial assistance to children of highway workers killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. locations in the Greater Chicagoland area. “Dick will be missed by everyone at McCann,” said McCann Chief Executive Officer Dennis Kruepke. “He was not only a successful business man, he also touched many hearts and made a difference in so many positive ways. This strong legacy and business philosophy will live on,” he added. Mr. McCann held positions of significance including president of Associated Construction Distributors International, president of Illinois Equipment Distributors and board positions on the Underground Contractors Association and Concrete Contractors Association of Greater Chicago; and Boy Scouts of America, Three Fires Council. Mr. McCann’s legacy of a solid work ethic and moral integrity can be seen throughout the business today. Mr. McCann cherished his memories of scouting, where his mother, Gladys, was his den leader. His scouting experience instilled in him a love for adventure and the great outdoors. He developed a spirit of perseverance, loyalty, and determination. It grounded in him the strong moral compass that made him the man of integrity those that knew him remember today.

Mr. McCann’s love, generosity and leadership have left an indelible mark on countless people for generations to come. Of note is his passion for the Cub Scout Adventure Camp, a 500-acre facility located north of Rochelle, Ill., where Lake Gladys is dedicated to his mother. He was the loving husband of Lynn J. McCann (nee Saberson); beloved father of the late Michael J., Theresa L. (David M.) Bagley, Kathlean J. (Thomas E.) Heller, Sheryl (Randall R.) Tucker, and James J. (Jill St. Clair-McCann); dear grandfather of Meghan L., Erin E., and Alexander D. Bagley, Erica K., Daniel J., and Joshua T., Heller, Michael R., and Maxwell J., McCann; fond brother of Lynn A. (Mary) McCann, and brother-in-law of Lee A. (Barb) Saberson. He was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth J. and Gladys R. McCann, and sister-in-law Judith McCann. Tips on How to Choose the Best Telehandler Attachment By Brian Boeckman SPECIAL TO CEG

Telehandlers provide a convenient way to move many types and sizes of loads. When properly selected, a variety of attachments that fit on the end of the telehandler boom can enhance the versatility and performance of these machines. Determining the optimum attachment for a particular application requires a thorough understanding of the load you are moving. That means asking a number of questions: What are the width, length and height of the load? Is it palletized for forks, or will the load require a sling? How heavy is the load, and where is its center of gravity? Answers to these questions will direct operators to the attachment best suited to perform the task at hand. Common to most job sites are standard carriages that enable operators to pick and place an assortment of materials, from pallets of concrete block to loads of lumber. They typically come in a variety of widths (JLG offers 50, 60, and 72 in. [127, 152 and 183 cm] widths), so carriages should be selected to accommodate the width of the load. Fork length should also be selected to accommodate the length of the load. JLG offers 48-, 60-, and 72-in. [122, 152 and 183 cm] forks as well as a 90-in. (228 cm) fork extension for longer loads. In addition to width and fork length, carriages vary according to their ability to tilt forward and aft as well as side to side. Standard carriages provide the operator with the ability to tilt

the forks forwards and backwards. Side-tilt carriages tilt side to side for more precise placement and retrieval, while side-shift carriages make it possible to slide a load 4 in. (10 cm) to the right or left during placement by moving the forks side to side on the carriage. This is especially helpful in warehouse applications or applications that require load retrieval or placement through a window. Another carriage option is the swing carriage, which rotates up to 90 degrees to the right or left, allowing operators to swing and place longer loads through windows and in confined areas, or where exact positioning is required. In addition, a dual fork positioning carriage provides the ability to adjust the position of each fork independently, allowing the operator to handle a variety of palletized loads without having to leave the cab. Buckets provide operators with another useful tool. A standard utility or material bucket is an effective and efficient tool to scoop and carry loose materials around the job site, including gravel, dirt, mulch and other small debris. To tackle larger tasks, including clean-up associated with natural disasters, many telehandler manufacturers offer grapple buckets, which feature a hydraulic grapple arm that clamps down to grab bulky materials and secure the load. Truss booms offer a means to move suspended loads and are primarily used to set trusses, frames, and beams for wood and steel building construction. Available with or without a winch, the booms come in dif-

ferent sizes and provide the operator with extra reach capabilities without requiring a larger machine. Suspended loads also can be handled with a lifting hook. The hook slips onto the carriage forks, adding versatility to the carriage and allowing operators to lift awkward objects, like septic tanks and generators without removing the carriage. Finally, personal work platforms extend the capabilities of the telehandler and improve job site efficiency and productivity by lifting material and persons to working heights when there is no safer alternative. The forkmounted attachment can move brick layers and mortar from one level of scaffolding to the next, lift inspectors for roof inspections, elevate electricians and spools of cable to transformers, and lift maintenance workers to replace parking lot lights. To gain the full benefit of each of these attachments, operators are advised to answer the questions originally posed in this article and review the load chart that accompanies each piece of equipment. In addition, it makes sense to consult with the local rental store or telehandler dealer to ensure the best match of attachment to the defined scope of work. By taking these simple steps, operators will more fully appreciate the versatility of the telehandler as a job site work tool, and its ability to meet a wide variety of jobs faster and with greater ease. he Nashville Convention Center in downtown Nashville, Tenn., hosted this year’s National Pavement Expo (NPE) on January 23 to 26. Considered to be the largest event specifically dedicated to paving and pavement maintenance professionals, NPE provided attendees with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and learn new techniques through workshops, seminars, conferences and in-depth industry networking. Industry roundtables were very popular and provided opportunities for industry professionals to network and socialize while sharing challenges, solutions, and actual experiences. More than 110 exhibitors participated in the show. Many manufacturers also used the NPE platform to unveil their newest product offerings, as well. For the first time in NPE history, the exhibit floor was opened on the first day of the show for a preview night from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. This was an opportunity for attendees to enjoy snacks and refreshments on the exhibit floor while connecting and networking with peers and get a sneak peek at the displays and equipment and supplies of the industry’s leading manufacturers, dealers, distributors, and service providers. Bruce Monical of Wirtgen America Inc., Antioch, Tenn., was pleased with show’s attendance. “What we’ve noticed about this show [and I’m not saying this is different from the other shows], folks are here for a reason,” he said. “They’re here to attend the educational seminars and are people in the business that are looking for what products, services and methods are available to them to improve the way they do things to increase their earnings while giving a better product to their customer.” Dave Dennison, product manager of Bomag, Kewanee, Ill., also was pleased with the NPE show. “It was a good show. For the first time, we brought our new Bomag BM 600/15 trimmer mill and it drew a lot of attention.”
