The combination of Minot International’s current numbers and the growth forecast over the next 20 years led to the decision to build a new terminal directly east of the existing one.

The Minot, N.D., International Airport is undergoing a muchneeded expansion, with construction of a $40 million terminal which was scheduled to begin this past October. As the fourth-largest city in the state, Minot is experiencing a population growth and an upswing in its economy as a result of the oil boom in western North Dakota. That has led to increased air traffic, making Minot the state’s third-busiest city. “Of cities under 50,000 people, Minot is the fifth-fastest growing community in the country,” Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., told the Minot Daily News. “The economy is growing. The population is growing. Airport boardings are growing dramatically and there’s more and more flights coming in here all the time.” According to Gov. Jack Dalrymple, airports across the state have seen a significant increase in the number of travellers over see AIRPORT page 76

U.S. Supreme Court Rules in Favor of ASA Brief In a victory for construction subcontractors, the U.S. Supreme Court preserved the 24 state laws limiting the validity of forum-selection clauses in construction contracts in its ruling on Dec. 3 in Atlantic Marine Construction Co. Inc. v. United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, et al. The American Subcontractors Association filed an amicus brief in the case in August, telling the Supreme Court that a poor decision

“… would compel federal courts to disregard: (1) the law of the state where the project was located, and (2) the legitimate policy concerns those laws were designed to address.” The Supreme Court said that when a federal court considers the forum for a case, “the court should not consider the parties’ private interests aside from those embodied in the forum-selection clause; it may consider only public interests.” see ASA page 96

Volvo Group Agrees to Sell Volvo Rents for $1.1B As part of efforts to focus on its core business, the Volvo Group has agreed to sell Volvo Rents to the U.S. private equity firm Platinum Equity for $1.1 billion. Volvo Construction Equipment will con-

tinue to sell products to Volvo Rents under the new ownership. Volvo Rents offers rental of a range of machines intended for the construction and engineering industry, including Volvo

Diamond Equipment Gives Thanks at 43rd Annual Thanksgiving Open House

iamond Equipment held its 43rd Thanksgiving Open House Event at its headquarters location in Evansville, Ind., on Nov. 22. The event has become an annual tradition for Diamond Equipment employees, factory representatives and customers. Contractors, municipal maintenance employees and farmers from the Evansville area gathered to catch up

with Diamond Equipment representatives and review the latest equipment. Diamond Equipment’s Dave Clement said the event is the dealership’s was to thank its loyal customers that contribute to the company’s ongoing success. Attendees received a warm welcome along with door prizes and were treated to a barbecue lunch at the event. Established in 1969, Diamond Equipment is the authorized dealer for

Fritcha’s Construction Expands Levee With 1150M Dozer By John Bauer SPECIAL TO CEG

Fritcha’s Construction — a New Haven, Ind., firm owned and operated by brothers Troy and Todd Fritcha — recently completed a levee expansion project in New Haven to protect a golf course from the rising banks of the Maumee River. This involved hauling in more than 20,000 cu. yds. (15,291 cu m) of dirt and building the levee more than 2 ft. (.6 m) higher than its existing structure. To complete the dozer work on the project, Fritcha’s Construction used the new 1150M dozer from Case Construction Equipment. This machine — part of the new M Series of dozers from Case — provided Troy Fritcha (who doubles as the company’s primary dozer operator) with advances in productivity, controllability and comfort that helped improve overall operation. “So far so good,” said Fritcha. “It’s really nice, it’s quiet, it’s got a lot of power and the fuel economy seems to be doing really well.” Pure Earthmoving Earthmoving is part of the Fritcha family DNA. Troy and Todd’s father founded the company nearly 60 years ago (2014 marks that milestone). Fritcha’s Construction tackles projects ranging from residential excavation to site preparation for commercial developments, and also has made a niche for itself in rail and highway accident cleanup. As dedicated earthmovers, the company relies heavily on bulldozers. The company currently owns older machines in Case’s 1150 size class, but put the new 1150M to the test on the levee expansion. The new low-ground-pressure 1150M operated on this job weighs in at 32,632 lbs. (14,801 kg) and features a drawbar pull of 48,000 lbs. (21,772 kg). It is powered by a 127.4 hp (94.7 kW) Tier IV Interim engine that features Case exclusive Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. “For the size of the machine, it will take the haul truck load in a couple of swipes,” said Fritcha. “It’s got plenty of power pushing

up the hill… it holds the slopes well. It’s hands down faster than what I’m used to. You get a lot more done.” “Farther back on this project there were some two-to-one slopes and that’s what I was testing it on, and it seemed to do really well.” As the first dozer line in the industry with SCR technology, Fritcha said that the engine provided strong machine performance and that adding diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) was not a problem. he added that the power and speed of the dozer contributed to being able to shave considerable time off the job compared to his older models. “I guarantee it would take an

extra day or two [with the older models],” said Fritcha. “[It provides] a good day [in time savings].” The 1150M also is easy to maintain, even with the new technology. All hydraulic checkpoints, filters and electric fuses can be reached from the ground level for easier access. “We do all of our own maintenance,” he added. “We don’t have a mechanic per se. Each of us does our own grease. Checking the engine oil is nice. Everything is laid out really well. The grease fittings are convenient so it doesn’t take long to grease the machine at all… it makes it easier than chas-

you don’t want the stuff going all over, so the quicker you can turn, the better it is.” The machine responds equally well to steering in relatively tight spots. “That’s a ten foot, six inch flat spot on the top of the levee, and you can counter-rotate right on top,” he said. “That makes it good when you’ve got trucks coming and you’ve got dirt and you want to turn around and go the other way. Sioux Chief Plumbing Products Integral to New Mercy Hospital Joplin Sioux Chief announced its supply, drainage, and support products have been selected for installation in the new Mercy Hospital Joplin, which replaces the previous St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, destroyed on May 22, 2011, by an EF-5 tornado that devastated a large portion of Joplin. The new medical facility is expected to be complete in 2015. U.S. Engineering, the mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC contractor for the new hospital project, selected Sioux Chief’s rough plumbing products as a primary source for the facility’s supply, drainage, and support installation needs. U.S. Engineering will install thousands of Sioux Chief products including hundreds of water hammer arresters, Stub Outs, OxBox access boxes, support brackets and nearly one thousand Sioux Chief FinishLine drains and cleanouts in the new 424 bed facility. “We’re careful to examine true costs so that even when Sioux Chief’s products cost more in some cases than its competitor’s we still know we will save money.” said U.S. Engineering, plumbing superintendent, Clint Morgan. “That’s because of the significant reduction of installation time. It’s labor savings.” “Sioux Chief’s product design eliminates a lot of time and effort so my team members spend far less time on the initial

installation. For example, the FinishLine drain and clean-out system adjusts before and after the pour; that’s a real game changer for us,” Morgan said. “On a project of this magnitude, the advantage of using the FinishLine is that the strainer tops stay off the job during construction saving on breakage and cleaning. With typical drains the strainer is the only finish item on the job during construction. The FinishLine keeps the strainers off the job site. New Volvo G900 Series Grader Gives Customers Four Different Models In today’s fast-paced world consumers are faced with choices everywhere. Volvo Construction Equipment, and in turn, The G.W. Van Keppel Company of Kansas City, Kan., are no different, offering their customers many options to choose from in terms of equipment. Volvo recently came to market with the new G900 series grader, which gives customers four different models with all new rugged frames and redesigned engines. Salesman Aaron Vollrath is new to Van Keppel, but has a strong construction equipment background, coming recently from a neighboring Cat dealer. “The new G9000 series graders are great machine,” he said. “First in class with the overall machine balance, it has the highest blade down power in its weight class, not to mention the options.” The options Vollrath referred to are what sold Vollrath’s customer, Pettis County of Missouri, on the two

machines the county purchased from Van Keppel last spring. While competing graders all have joystick controls, Volvo is the manufacturer offering both joystick and steering wheel controls. The G9000 series graders also feature EGR technology ensuring they meet the Tier IV legislation requirements. Operators will find a “shuttle shift” allowing ease in shifting for forward to reverse without stopping. Extended oil service intervals and the need to only grease weekly all make it an easy pick for cost as well as ease in integrating it into the customer’s fleet, according to the company. Pettis county purchased two new graders this year to help maintain more than 300 mi. (483 km) of county roads. “I am pleased with Van Keppel’s level of service and the Volvo graders,” said a Pettis County operator, adding that the graders provide features that are important in the everyday run cycle.

OOGA Holds Third Annual Oilfield Expo, Safety Congress

he Ohio Oil & Gas Association (OOGA) held its third annual Oilfield Expo and Safety Congress at the I-X Center in Cleveland, Ohio, on Dec. 4 and 5. This year’s event kicked off with an Oilfield Expo Welcome Reception at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The event featured industry training sessions in a classroom setting focused on business practices and job site safety. Subjects devoted to safety covered topics such as driver safety, flash fire risk assessment, and trenching & shoring and business sessions covered site security, asset protection strategies and navigating the Health Care Exchanges. According to Mike

Chadsey, OOGA’s director of public relations, as Ohio’s development of shale oil and gas energy resources has gained momentum, so too has exhibitor participation at the Oilfield Expo and Safety Congress. The number of exhibitors at this year’s event was nearly double that of the past year. More than 200 oil and gas industry suppliers, service providers and associations involved with shale oil and gas well development in Ohio exhibited this year. AGC of Minnesota Hosts Successful 94th Annual Meeting

GC of Minnesota hosted its 94th Annual Meeting at Radisson Blu Mall of America, Bloomington, on Nov. 20. The annual meeting, which kicked off with a silent auction and continental breakfast, offered attendees a host of business learning opportunities through education sessions with key industry players, such as best-selling author Brent Darnell, Brad Ommodt, Julius Chepey and many more. The program took a look at Emotional Intelligence (EI), the concept of social competence and awareness. Darnell explained how it can be measured to increase company’s bottom lines. A holiday reception with AGC members, industry colleagues from MnDOT, the Association of Women Contractors and the National Association of Minority Contracters immediately followed the eduction sessions. AGC also congratulated this year’s award recipients — Wayne Olson, Bituminous Roadways Inc., recipient of the SkillResponsibility-Integrity Award, and Bruce Engelsma, Kraus-Anderson Construction Company, who was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mack Delivers 2013 Capitol Christmas Terex to Sell Truck Tree in Time for Lighting Ceremony Business to Volvo After completing a journey of more than 5,000 mi. on the back of a Mack Pinnacle model, the 2013 Capitol Christmas Tree was lit in an official ceremony at the U.S. Capitol on Dec. 3. The tree traveled from the Colville National Forest in the state of Washington to the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol, making stops in communities across the country. Speaker of the House John Boehner (ROhio) led the ceremony and flipped the switch with the help of six-year old Giovanni Gayner to light this year’s Capitol Christmas Tree. The 88-ft. Engelmann Spruce was hand-selected from a pool of candidate trees suggested by Colville National Forest A Mack Pinnacle model delivers the 88-ft. Christmas tree to the U.S. employees by the U.S. Capitol Capitol on a custom-built oversized trailer. Superintendent of Grounds Ted Bechtol. Gayner is a student at Hofstetter School in Colville, Wash., and he also participated in making ornaments for the 2013 Capitol Christmas Tree. Gayner’s name was drawn at random from the many children in Washington State who participated in this year’ ornament making. More than 6,000 ornaments adorn the tree. The national event was made more festive by musical performances from the Notebusters Children’s Choir, the United States Marine Band and vocalist Lindsay Lawler. The 80-year-old tree was delivered to the U.S. Capitol on Nov. 25 and was lowered by crane into place on the west lawn. As a sponsor of the tree tour, Mack provided two Mack Pinnacle models for the cross-country tour. for $160 Million Terex Corporation has agreed to sell its truck business to Volvo Construction Equipment for cash proceeds of approximately $160 million. The truck business manufactures and sells off-highway rigid and articulated haul trucks. Included in the transaction is the manufacturing facility in Motherwell, Scotland. Gorilla Hammers Assists Southern Pipeline With Job Founded by husband and wife team Eddie and Joyce Blair 40 years ago, Southern Pipeline Construction has built its business on serving water and electric utilities in Louisville, Ky., and the surrounding area. Over the past 40 years, the company has become a loyal Case Construction Equipment customer; the company’s Case machines range from backhoes, track loaders, and compact excavators, to wheel loaders and large excavators. As a result, Southern Pipeline Construction Company CEO David Spence has developed a strong working relationship with Glen Gish, who has represented the Case line at Louisville’s previous dealer and now works for Bale Equipment Solutions, an authorized Case dealer. When the company was awarded a job for Louisville Gas & Electric, placing a 20 in. (50.8 cm) steel gas pipe in some of the most difficult terrain it has encountered, it turned to Gish for its equipment needs. Roughly half of the 2.5 mi. (4 km) stretch they were working was rock that in areas ran 400 ft. (122 m) at depths reaching 6 ft. (1.8 m). Adding to the difficulty of the job was the fact that on one .25 mi. (.40 km) stretch, the pipeline project ran through the rock over a mountainside at a nearly 60 degree grade. The hillside was so steep workers couldn’t stand on it, according to Spence. Company employees were required to have special clearance to work on the site, which was located approximately 20 mi. (32 km) south of Louisville and ran through potions of Fort Knox, about 5 mi. (8 km) from the gold vault. To tackle the project, the company harnessed a Case CX225 excavator to a dozer equipped with a winch to lower

the excavator as it worked on the pipeline. Under such difficult working conditions the company wanted to be sure that the hydraulic hammer it’d be using would stand up to the task while performing at peak efficiently. Southern Pipeline Construction already owned a hammer but it would need to be rebuilt to do the job, which would take up valuable time. After discussing the options with Gish, it was decided that it would be quicker to replace the old hammer with a new Gorilla hammer for the price of rebuilding the hammer the company already owned. Bale Equipment Solutions had recently taken on the Gorilla Hydraulic Hammers line and called in Gorilla Hydraulic Hammers President Bobby Tedesco to analyze the job and make a recommendation. Tedesco quickly arranged to meet with Spence to discuss job requirements. Spence was impressed with the level of service and knowledge provided by Gorilla Hydraulic Hammers and that Tedesco was

interested in meeting with him, he said. The company ended up purchasing a GHB 150 hydraulic hammer for the job. Features of the GHB 150 that appealed to Spence include the unit’s extended piston stroke, which resulted in smoother operation with minimal repercussion on carrier, and the Accumulator, which is designed to reduce irregular pulse pressure on the hydraulic circuit while providing improved striking power. Spence was impressed with the hammer, saying the GHB 150 hydraulic hammer is very reliable and hard-hitting unit that both the company’s foremen and machine operators agreed is incredibly strong. The hammer held up for the duration of the job, ultimately processing 660 cu. yds. (604 cu m) of rock in a two month period. Spence added that the hammer more than paid for itself on that one job and that Southern Pipeline finished the job on time due to Gorilla Hammers. Bale Equipment Solutions is a family-owned full line construction equipment dealer. Wacker Neuson Set to Hold Annual Trowel Challenge Wacker Neuson’s booth at World of Concrete will once again be a show destination for the industry’s fastest finishers. The sixth annual Wacker Neuson Trowel Challenge competition will take place during World of Concrete, Jan. 21 to 24, 2014, Las Vegas, Booth #O30145. The ride-on trowel challenge tests the operator’s entire range of speed and accuracy skills as they maneuver around an obstacle course that weaves throughout the 2,400 sq. ft. slab. Also this year at Wacker Neuson’s booth will be an additional slab so attendees not participating in the challenge can have more time to operate Wacker Neuson’s line of walk-behind and ride-on trowels. As safety continues to be a paramount concern for job sites, contractors can see how Wacker Neuson’s walkbehind trowels were built with safety in mind, according to the company. Wacker Neuson’s CT walk-behind line offers a design built to provide extra protection from an out of control spinning handle. When the operator lets go of the handle, a gyroscopic safety sensor detects the motion of the handle and stops the engine before the handle reaches a 45-degree rotation. This engages the gearbox brake which will stop the handle rotation within 270 degree rotation. This system protects the operator from being struck by a runaway handle, according to the manufacturer. ConExpo 1996 Las Vegas, Nevada Global Thinking at ConExpo ’96 Leads to a World of Ideas This ConExpo article was published in Construction Equipment Guide (CEG) in March 20, 1996, just prior to the show. This and other ConExpo articles to follow will be part of a continuing series that take a look back at ConExpos past through the reporting of CEG. ConExpo-Con/AGG ’96 to be held March 20 to 26, 1996, in Las Vegas expects 25 percent of the approximately 100,000 show attendees to arrive from outside the United States. Billed as a World of Ideas, the show will draw attendees from more countries than any other exposition in the western hemisphere in 1996 for the construction,

aggregates and ready mixed concrete industries. “The show will definitely have a greater international flavor than either the 1993 ConExpo or the 1994 Con/AGG show in the past and that is a direct reflection of the growing global business community,” said Dennis Slater, exposition director. This is the first time that ConExpo and Con/Agg will be combining efforts to produce one show. “By attending ConExpo-Con/AGG ’96, international attendees will be exposed to companies and products that they might not have otherwise seen by attending either show separately. The show will provide a cost-effective opportunity for foreign buyers to purchase goods from not only U.S. manufacturers, but from other manufacturers and suppliers from every corner of the globe.” Con-Expo/ConAGG ’96 is one of 22 U.S. trade shows selected by the U.S. Department of Commerce to participate in its Foreign Buyer program. In addition, it is the only construction-related show to have been selected to participate in this prestigious government-sponsored program. The U.S. Department of Commerce recorded the highest number of organized foreign delegations attending any trade show at ConExpo in 1993. Organizers of ConExpoCon/AGG ’96 expect an even greater international turnout.

Overseas attendees will also have the opportunity to register their buying interests or intentions to represent other manufacturers as a distributor through the IBC and the lists will be made available to U.S. exhibitors. “The IBC is a tremendous benefit for foreign attendees because we want to make it as easy as possible to match prospective buyers and sellers,” said Peter Vlahos, director of sales and operations for ConExpo-Con/AGG ’96. Participation in the Foreign Buyer Program also makes it easier and more convenient for international attendees to travel to the show. U.S. embassies in many countries have agreed to help organize delegations and assist interested buyers in making travel arrangements to attend the show. While at the show, international attendees have the opportunity to participate in five educational seminars that will be simultaneously translated into German, French and Spanish. Attendees can also participate in 75 additional sessions covering over 50 different topics from technological advancements to management skills and personal development. After the tradeshow floor closes, attendees can take advantage of the famous Las Vegas nightlife, which includes casinos, fine dining and shows by some of the biggest names in show business. It wraps around the filter housing and reduces or eliminates the possibility of cold weather fuel gelling stopping the engine. The ‘peel & stick’ Universal Preheater attaches to the bottom or the side of the oil pan and converts the housing into a heat transfer element. It warms the oil without burning it making cold starts easy. It can be used on gearboxes, transmissions, transfer cases, water tanks and even bulk oil tanks. The Preheater plugs into any 120 or 240 volt outlet and consists of a thin silicone fiberglass pad containing a metal grid. To install it, you clean an area on the bottom or side of the oil pan and press the pad onto it, then use silicone to seal the edges of the pad and place a flexible ceramic insulation pad over it. Shuttle sensitivity allows the operator to adjust how the machine operates when they shift from a forward motion to a reverse motion. “On a dozer like this, you don’t want to be jerking around,” said Fritcha. “From forward to reverse, it doesn’t matter which gear you’re in. It doesn’t throw you backwards or forwards. It’s nice and smooth.” Operator Cab Key to Comfort, Productivity Another aspect of the 1150M that stood out to Fritcha is the overall design of the cab. The 1150M features a positive pressure cab that helps keep out the elements by pushing more clean/filtered air into the cab. It also comes with full environmental controls (heat/air conditioning) to keep the operator comfortable. “The rest of our dozers are open cabs,” said Fritcha. “When I can go home at night and not have dirt everywhere, and I’m not tired, it makes a huge difference. It’s quiet. It’s got a radio. It has great visibility out the windows.” The visibility afforded by the 1150M ranks with the best in the industry. Floor-

to-ceiling glass at the doors with a direct line of sight to the blade corners assists in placement accuracy. “The visibility is good,” Fritcha continued. “You can still see the blade tips whether you have glass or not, and that’s the main thing. You want to be able to see where your blade’s at and what you’re doing.” The new 1150M features a considerably quieter cab than its predecessors due to the way it is positioned and sealed. The quietness of the cab is extremely important for operator comfort.

“It’s such a huge advantage to have a cab where you don’t have to wear ear plugs,” said Fritcha. “My dad ran dozers for 50 years and he never wore anything, and you could tell [it affected his hearing]. Chairman of the Board of Central Allied Enterprises Inc. until his passing, Mr. Woodhall was involved in many civic, state and national organizations, including Minnesota Safety Council (chairman of the board), National Safety Council (twoterm chairman of the board), Associated General Contractors of Minnesota (president), Associated General Contractors of America (life director), Boy Scouts of America (chairman of Lakota, Minn. district), Concrete Pavers Association of Minnesota (president), American Arbitration Association (arbitrator), Governor’s Board for OSHA (Minn.), Willmar (Minn.) John A. Woodhall Jr. of Canton, passed away Nov. 21, at Affinity Kiwanis Club (president), Mason and Shriner, and Order of the Medical Center, surrounded by his family.

A former pilot, outdoorsman, Boy Scout, avid reader, car enthusiast, tinkerer and lover of beagles, Mr. Woodhall most recently pursued genealogy with a passion, and took great pride in his Norwegian and English heritage. John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Donna, his high-school sweetheart; children, John III (Diane), and Susan of Minnesota, Cheryl (Jerry Orn), and Douglas of North Canton, Robert

(Rhonda) of Louisville; grandchildren, Adam, Erik, and Ryan Woodhall, Matthew (Jayme), Joseph and Hallie Orn, Katie (Tyson) Woodhall-Abraham, Emmy, Molly and Eli Woodhall, Nicole (Phillip) Monroe, Kaylyn Woodhall; and great-grandchildren, Elsah, Sigourney, Liana, Mari, and Michael. Toro Company Expands Headquarters The Toro Company broke ground Sept. 5 on a $25 million expansion in Bloomington, Minn., that the company has called home for more than 50 years. The project begins the process of expanding the company’s product development and test capacities, demonstrating its continued commitment to innovation. “We are investing in our Bloomington facility to enable our businesses to continue to meet the needs of our customers,” said Michael J. Hoffman, Toro’s chairman and chief executive officer. “With the anticipated growth of our businesses, through ongoing product development and the addition of recent acquisitions taking us into new markets, this investment will help to expand our technical capacity and further the innovation our customers expect. As we celebrate our Centennial next year, this project will help position us for the future and reinforce our commitment to innovation, our customers and our employees.” The 75,000-sq. ft. expansion is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2014.
