Construction Market Boosts Economy
Employment in 2024 Rises Three Times Faster Than Pre-Pandemic Years
By Lucy Perry CEG CORRESPONDENT
Due in large part to the 2021 IIJA bill, the construction sector is adding jobs to the U.S. economy. In September alone, the industry added 25,000 jobs compared with August. In fact, from September 2023 construction gained 238,000 jobs, which equates to a 3 percent increase. That’s three times faster than overall employment since before the pandemic. There are currently approximately 16 percent more construction jobs than in March of 2020, reported the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). That’s 5 percent more than see JOBS page 91
The AGC found that 24 states and the District of Columbia added construction jobs between August and September of this year.

In the weeks and months leading up to the World Series, manufacturer DuraEdge Products Inc., headquartered in Grove City, Pa., worked hard to spread its specially-formulated dirt across United States baseball fields in preparation of big games such as this.
From quality assurance and transporting the dirt to spreading soil and collaborating with Major League Baseball (MLB) staff members, DuraEdge ensures engineered materials to more than two dozen MLB teams, including the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox.
Starting out small like every company, DuraEdge opened its doors in 1999 and began by providing sand and soil mixtures for local golf courses. Owner Grant McKnight previously worked at a construction-material company his father owned, which ignited McKnight’s interest in sands and soils.
“I’d found that I loved the science of it, so I immersed myself in studying and selling sand,” he said.
After a local, yet prominent university, Slippery Rock University, requested infield soil from DuraEdge, McKnight worked tirelessly to formulate the perfect game-day dirt that offered the moisture control and durability baseball fields demand.
ItÊs All in the Details
By studying the unique properties of sand and soil, McKnight sought out a particular red rock clay found in a dirt farm located in Sarver, Pa. The clay, naturally adhesive and particularly absorbent, initially appeared too hard, leading McKnight to nearly “scrap the whole thing.” But once he took a gamble and mixed the clay with sand, however, “everything changed,” according to McKnight.
This successful find created the perfect soil and fostered a happy client — creating an entirely new niche for DuraEdge. The Slippery Rock job then helped the company secure its first “bigleague” client, the Philadelphia Phillies in 2005. After that, McKnight said, “the rest is history” and its soil is now spread across baseball fields across the country.
The clay, which takes nearly two months to excavate from the ground and to process properly, contains illite and chlorite, two unique minerals essential for moisture control and water absorption. The clay, initially very dense and compact, absorbs water without expanding, making it ideal for any ball field and rainy conditions.
such as the company’s Cat D8T R dozer and Cat 323 and 326F excavators. After excavation, the clay is transported to a DuraEdge processing plant, then crushed and screened into a fine powder before being deemed usable.
Once the material arrives on site at the processing facility, DuraEdge uses its D9H dozer, Cat 926M, 962K and 962M wheel loaders and Cat 259D track steer to handle and move the clay through the various stages of the process. A Cat 323 excavator breaks down the clay into just more than an inch in size with the help of a specialty attachment. The primary size reduction is accomplished with an ALLU DH 3-12 screening bucket, compatible with their Cat excavator. It has giant revolving teeth that shred the clay into smaller, more manageable pieces and prepares it for the secondary crushing process.
Conveyors transport the clay, which then runs through a Rock Engineered Machinery Company Inc. (REMco) vertical shaft impact crusher. The REMco crusher contains a rotor that spins at an impressive 1,800 revolutions per minute, which slings the clay mineral outward into a reinforced steel shell that pulverizes the clay into a viable clay
field and the use of the soil. For example, infield mixtures may receive more sand compared with material used for the pitching mound and batter’s box, which requires more hydration. Because this clay is naturally so absorbent and effective as-is, no chemicals, preservatives or additives are necessary. The soil is now ready for send-off.
Altogether, this combination of unique clay and specially graded sand creates impeccable stability, moisture control and traction essential to any baseball player’s success, regardless of any rain, sleet or hail. This differentiating mixture also increases player safety by minimizing slips and can even eliminate game downtime. Without concern for harsh weather conditions and with increased player safety, more games can safely continue without the need of rescheduling or postponement, which ultimately helps the league save money and capitalize profitability.
Big-League Dirt With Big-League Results
In addition to this unique infield soil created by DuraEdge, McKnight collaborates closely with MLB staff members, his team of soil experts and the field groundskeepers to address any specific needs of each field. For example, the infield soil for the Boston Red Sox will vary from the San Diego Padres or the Texas Rangers soil because these soils face different climates and therefore require a different soil makeup.
In addition, DuraEdge uses local sand to better suit each field’s needs.
“This clay is special,” McKnight said. “We ship the clay to our plants. They then use sand that’s available in those places. That allows for the kind of consistent products that MLB teams want. The MLB guys understand the science,” said McKnight, which helps ensure optimal soil and performance.
Obtaining the clay, however, is no simple task. The clay, also known as the “Pittsburgh Red Bed Claystone,” resides in the Glenshaw formation under several layers of overburden, including sandstone, gray shale and limestone — anywhere from 10-60 ft. below the Pennsylvania mine surface. This requires a considerable amount of time and heavy iron,
powder. The REMco crusher is in a closed circuit with a screening plant, a Terex-Finlay 683 Supertrack double deck screener. The clay remains in this circuit and will go back through the REMco as many times as necessary until it passes through both decks of the screener. This leaves the final clay no larger than 5/32-in. minus particle size.
Next, the clay is combined with sand, dependent on the
With minor maintenance required and a substantial lifespan of up to 10 years, DuraEdge’s infield mix has become a staple to many baseball fields nationwide, resulting in a substantial demand. One field alone requires approximately 80-100 tons of material including dirt, clay, quick-drying material and topdressing products. Within a year’s time, DuraEdge excavates, loads and transports approximately 30,000 tons of clay from the Glenshaw formation to meet the demands of its clients. Because of its hard work, DuraEdge is now an official partner of Minor League Baseball and named the “Official Infield Playing Surface of Minor League Baseball.”
While little thought once went into the soil used at baseball fields, its composition now plays a vital role to moisture control, soil stability and the players’ abilities to play safely despite inclement weather. Whether it’s another practice or to play in the World Series, the perfected soil and infield mix helps players perform their best. CEG (All photos

MUCA’s ‘Day of the Dozers’ Reaches Goal, Begins Endowment
The Minnesota Utility Contractors Association (MUCA) held its 12th annual Day of the Dozers event at ERX Motor Park in Elk River, Minn., on Sept. 21, 2024. Attendance was estimated to be between 3,500 and 4,000 families. All proceeds from the event went to Children’s Minnesota to establish an endowment fund for its nursing program.
Day of the Dozers provides an opportunity to educate families about the construction industry. A wide variety of construction equipment is on hand for kids to ride with a certified machine operator. Children can play in sandpits, along with a variety of fun activities. Families also can enjoy food from local food trucks.
“Day of the Dozers is a day when everyone in the construction industry comes together to put on the coolest event most kids will ever see,” said Scott Weness, regional sales manager, Minnesota construction, RDO Equipment Co., a founding sponsor of the event. “We raise money for Children’s Hospital, and we get kids excited about the construction industry for our next generation of operators.”
MUCA’s goal was to raise $100,000 to support the recruitment, training and continuing education for the skilled trade of nursing. That goal was met and surpassed, as the grand total raised was $101,972.75, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Children’s Minnesota.
“The amazing nurses at Children’s are at every touch point of the patient experience. Just like construction is facing workforce shortages, nursing is too. The Day of the Dozers committee felt it would be a great gesture on behalf of one skilled trade to another,” said a MUCA press release.
Day of the Dozers is supported by 100 percent donations — all equipment, personnel, T-shirts, pop/water, raffle toys and giveaways are donated by the community. More than 100 volunteers helped manage the gates; register guests; get waivers signed; and sell raffle tickets, T-shirts and concessions.
Also volunteering were 30 students of Central Lakes College’s heavy equipment program, helping escort the kids to and from the equipment.

Cat Precision Mining Initiative Streamlines Process
Caterpillar’s advanced mining vision, Cat Precision Mining is designed to improve and streamline every step of the mining process, from extraction to processing, bringing mine-to-mill theory into reality.
The initiative will bring everything together as a fully integrated, end-to-end solution that is customized to the mining operation’s specific requirements and unique orebody characteristics.
Cat Precision Mining will feature a suite of Cat and third-party technologies, including sensors installed across the site’s mobile equipment, processing plant and other fixed assets, all integrated into the Cat MineStar ecosystem.
Leveraging data from Caterpillar, Caterpillar company Peck Tech Consulting Ltd, and collaborating partner technologies from Orica Digital Solutions, IMA Engineering, Stream Systems, Skycatch Inc. and Information Alignment PTY LTD, the advanced mining solution will help operations more rapidly and precisely adjust their planning activities based on measured orebody variations that are present.
Providing the tools customers need to make quick and accurate decisions, Cat Precision Mining will enable blast plans designed in 3D, while collecting rock prop-
erty data to help optimize blast designs that accommodate for natural ore-body variations. The intelligent mining solution will gather data related to blast fragmentation, muckpile uniformity, payload and ore material properties for efficient material handling and assists with making sure the right material gets to the right place, reliably and predictably.
Advanced ore sensing and sorting help to ensure consistent and repeatable feedstock is delivered to the mill to offer higher recovery rates, reduced energy costs and less waste.
Key to the Cat Precision Mining initiative, Caterpillar is developing its Intelligent Decision Support System which will leverage the capabilities of Cat MineStar to consolidate Cat and third-party technology and sensor data, allowing miners to make datadriven decisions and continually refine processes. The solution will aggregate, analyze and report data from across the drilling, blasting, loading and hauling, and processing operations.
MineStar Material Management and Reporting will provide ore tracking from mining exploration and extraction processes right through to the finished product and can be utilised for evaluation and future predic-

American, Canadian Ironworkers Make Bridge Connection
BRIDGE from page 1
“This summer’s connection of the Gordie Howe International Bridge deck represents years of planning, design and construction involving an experienced and hard-working team of engineers, architects, iron workers, operating engineers and other skilled laborers. With the structure of the bridge now in place, crews can begin the next stage of bridge construction.”
Marty Howe and Murray Howe, sons of the late Canadian hockey legend, were among those who turned out for the emotional topping out ceremony, where ironworkers and operating engineers reflected on their contributions with a sense of pride.
“I got to put the last beam in, in the center of the job between us and the United States, and that was pretty cool,” said Cash Weatherall, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 793. “I’m so thrilled to be part of this project. It’s been the best job I’ve been on in my 34 years. I’ll never see another one like this.”
“What a sense of relief,” said Bob Godlewski, Michigan Ironworkers Local 25. “It went well, as planned. I’m ecstatic. It’s been a long time coming, and here we are, finally meeting in the middle.”
The Windsor-Detroit gateway is the busiest commercial land border crossing between Canada and the United States. The Gordie Howe International Bridge project, a $4.7 billion ($6.4 billion Canadian) investment, will be a gamechanger, according to Grondin.
“It will address the regional transportation needs of redundancy, capacity, system connectivity and improved border processing that will positively impact the flow of traffic and goods through this key gateway, and help our national economies grow.”
With a clear span of .53 mi. (.85 km), the structure has the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge in North America. The new bridge measures a total length of 1.5 mi. (2.5 km) and is the 10th longest in the world. It features two iconic towers measuring 722 ft. (220 m), with no piers in the water. The completed project will feature six lanes, three in each direction, with the capability to expand to eight lanes.
Construction also includes a multi-use path that will accommodate pedestrians and cyclists across the border. It will provide improved border processing capabilities and, for the first time, a highway-to-highway connection that will directly link traffic to Highway 401 in Windsor and I-75 in Detroit. Once built, the two ports of entry will be the largest land ports of entry along the United States-Canada border. The United States port of entry is approximately 167 acres with 36 primary inspection lanes and
similar inbound and outbound inspection facilities. The Canadian port of entry is approximately 130 acres and will house 16 toll lanes, 24 primary inspection lanes, outbound inspection facilities and a maintenance facility to support operations of the crossing.
With bridge construction nearing completion, work remains on the ports of entry in the United States and Canada, and the connection to I-75 as part of the Michigan Interchange. According to Grondin, progress is being achieved each day on all four components.
Substantial project completion is planned for September 2025, with the first vehicles expected to travel across the bridge that fall. WDBA and Bridging North America (BNA) marked the official start of construction in October 2018.
“Delivering a new international crossing is not easy, and the Gordie Howe International Bridge will be the first new binational crossing between Ontario and Michigan in more than 60 years,” said Grondin. “Planning, approvals, P3 procurement, design and construction to this point have taken over 20 years of collaboration, cooperation and determination among all levels of government.
“Throughout construction, we are prioritizing safety and quality as progress is made on the bridge, the two largest land ports of entry along the United States-Canada border and the connection into Interstate-75. WDBA has implemented a stringent oversight regime that aligns to the requirements set out in our project agreement with BNA. Our expert staff work closely with BNA, the Michigan Department of Transportation, U.S. Federal Highway Administration, border agencies and other external consultants to deliver and oversee this massive undertaking.”

Terex Supports Breast Cancer Research During 2024 Rodeo
Terex Utilities displayed various operator aids and tools during the International Lineman’s Rodeo & Expo, held Oct. 16 to 19, in Bonner Springs and Overland Park, Kan.
What stood out the most was the Terex Stand Alone Core Barrel auger tool, painted in custom pink colors, and backed by a “Digging for a Cure” banner promoting Breast Cancer Awareness.
“Every year, Terex Utilities recognizes and supports October Breast Cancer Awareness month,” said Justin Pinkalla, regional sales manager.
As in years past, visitors were invited to sign the banner to show their support of breast cancer research. The company also will donate $1,000 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation Midwest Region, which invests in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.
Two of the products on display in the Terex utilities booth help digger derrick operators improve efficiencies in drilling applications. The custom pink Stand Alone Core Barrel auger tool can increase productivity when drilling hard rock, such as limestone material, when a flighted auger will not do the job. The core barrel tool fits directly on a standard Kelly bar and can be stowed like a standard auger on the boom, eliminating the need for any attachments or having to remove for transportation, the company said.
“Terex is the only digger derrick manufacturer that also manufactures auger tooling,” Greg Adler, regional account manager of
Auger Tooling, said. “We understand how to design auger tools for maximum productivity and efficiency for the entire application.”
Also on display was the Terex Hollow Kelly Bar, which allows distribution crews to easily install screw anchors when used versus the traditional locking dog and square bars. Digger derrick operators can shave minutes off the process for every screw anchor that needs to be installed.
Terex Utilities’ design combines the auger extension shaft and screw anchor drive. The screw anchor rod inserts directly into the hollow Kelly Bar, eliminating the need for a screw anchor adaptor on the digger derrick.
“This helps eliminate manual handling, improves safety through less lifting, and increases productivity,” said Adler.
Finally, Terex displayed the HyPower SmartPTO by Viatec, a simple and reliable ePTO system that reduces idling, increases fuel savings, and minimized noise and air pollution by utilizing plug in electric power to operate the equipment. The SmartPTO powers the primary unit and auxiliary functions as well as directly powering lights and the optional integrated cab A/C using factory vents and controls.
The SmartPTO comes standard with a 14kWh battery, which gets most crews through the normal workday. In the higher-use applications, an optional 21-kWh battery is available.

Exact Offers New Line in Ohio, Kentucky
“The GMT grapple saw attachment is a game-changer in the tree industry and with the light footprint of the Jekko crane, these are able to get into tight areas with a lighter overall weight than some of the larger cranes and make quick work of a job,” said Walker.
According to Walker, Jekko has put a lot of research and development into not only their products but also their attachments to cover many different industries, tackling specific needs. It offers a range of attachments, including the glass manipulator, glass rack, saw grapple, pipe/beam grabber, hydraulic and electric jibs, searcher hook, man baskets and more.
Multiloaders (Almacrawler)
Multiloaders – also known as Almacrawlers – let the machine do the work for you. Instead of using manual labor to transport glass, logs and building materials, these machines can take these loads up or down staircases or in elevators. The Multiloaders keep the load safely horizontal even when on uneven or sloped terrain. These machines not only allow for crew members to be utilized elsewhere but keep your materials safe and secure in transport or storage.
This helps reduce the risk of injuries, increases the jobsite productivity and protects your loads, along with much more, according to the company.
Expanding Offerings, Fulfilling Needs
Paying attention to the needs of customers is an important aspect of any business. Being able to fulfill their needs keeps them coming back.
“Exact Crane has been moving larger cranes for a long time, from truck cranes to crawler cranes, all-terrains and RT’s,” said Swan. “We’ve dealt with enough people across the country in different types of work to see that there was a need for smaller cranes, lifting in tighter areas and inside buildings. After doing some research and making a trip down to Fascan in Baltimore, we got to see the Jekko and Multiloader products firsthand, and we’re really blown away by the features and quality of the product. It really got us thinking about the endless opportunities and needs that can be filled for our customers’ demands.”
The Exact team has had the opportunity to work alongside the Fascan team at several trade shows to continue to see all the possibilities these cranes offer. The experience and training from working on the larger cranes has provided an easy transition to the ability to service these smaller cranes. Several of the machines also have self-diagnostics on board, which “help reduce the amount of service actually needed in the field,” said Swan.
“Jekko takes pride in being the safest and most technologically advanced mini-crane line in the market,” said Jon Quesada, district sales manager of Jekko USA. “Our service and support are always available throughout every stage of the relationship, whether it is with our dealers, or our end users. Exact Crane has been spoken highly of within the industry. We are extremely
excited to have them as our dealer representing the product line in their territory and we look forward to building the future of Jekko alongside them.”
“Exact Crane is excited to offer this new product line and continuing to meet our customers’ needs,” said Swan.

Gordie Howe International Bridge Due to Complete in September 2025
from page 30
BNA, which includes ACS Infrastructure, Fluor and Aecon, is responsible for designing, building, financing, operating and maintaining the bridge. The project, not surprisingly, has had its share of challenges along the way.
“During the unexpected, three-year COVID-19 pandemic, WDBA and BNA worked together, along with our partners at MDOT and in the government of Canada and with subcontractors and unions, to be able to maintain work at the site,” said Grondin. “The disruptions were even more so for the Gordie Howe International Bridge project, given the differing applicable restrictions in the U.S. and Canada combined with the ramping up of construction activities in early 2020.”
Weather also has been an issue. High temperatures and humidity index factors can reach above 104 F (40 C) in July and August in the area, which may require more breaks for workers. In addition, wind speeds can randomly exceed 12 to 16 miles per hour, halting crane operations.
Now that the bridge deck is connected, work continues on the installation of electrical, drainage and fire suppression systems and the re-stressing of the stay cables. Work also is under way on the installation of the barriers, signage, aesthetic lighting, paving for the roadway and multi-use path and pavement markings.
Construction continues simultaneously on the back spans and approach spans extending inland connecting to the ports of entry in the United States and Canada. At the Canadian port of entry, construction on all 11 structures is well under way in different stages of progress, including interior work in a total of six buildings. Construction of the 24 primary inspection lanes and 16 toll booths continues.
At the United States port of entry, construction activities are advancing with all 13 structures taking shape, including interior work in five of six buildings. Construction of 36 primary inspection lanes is ongoing.
At the Michigan Interchange, the final girders are being installed on the ramps that will connect I-75 to the United States port of entry. Work also continues on five new pedestrian bridges, local road improvements and
the morning of June
siphons construction.
In addition to this summer’s connection of the bridge deck, recent major tasks completed have included the installation of all 216 stay cables. There are 108 stay cables connecting from each tower to the bridge and road deck. Also, both bridge towers reached their full height of 722 ft. (220 m) by the end of 2023, and the last of the four new road bridges over Interstate 75 as part of the Michigan Interchange opened to traffic last year.
There have been different concrete pours involved in all four components of the project. Regarding tower construction, each of the towers is supported by 12 shafts drilled into the bedrock to a depth of 118 ft. (36 m). Each shaft is filled with 342 cu. yds. (261 cu. m.) of concrete. There are 47 segments for each tower. Each segment has an average height of 15.3 ft. (4.67 m) and requires 128 cu. yds. (98 cu. m) of concrete pumped from the ground level.
For the bridge deck, concrete precast panels are placed on top of the floor beams. Each panel varies in weight. The panels are stitched together with rebar and concrete is poured as a final step.
A wide variety of machinery has been required on the project. BNA and its subcontractors have used drilling and pressure grouting equipment; a Bauer BG40 drilling rig; a Manitowoc 16000 lattice-boom crawler crane; a Manitowoc 2250 lattice-boom service crane, a Link-Belt LS 248 200-ton
crawler crane; a Comansa 21LC 1050 tower crane; a Manitowoc MLC300 VPC-Max crane; an ICE 44-50 vibratory hammer; a Cat IT14G loader; multiple diameter core barrels for rocksocket drilling; air lifting equipment; elevating working platforms; and concrete mixer trucks.
Grondin noted that since the start of construction, more than 12,000 workers, 42 percent of which are local, have been oriented to the project, logging more than 13 million hours of work.
Additionally, more than 280 businesses in Windsor-Essex and Detroit have been engaged by BNA and more than 715 apprenticeship/pre-apprentices have been assigned to the project.
As the team begins preparing for opening day, Grondin is grateful for the opportunity she's been given.
“It’s very rewarding to be a part of the Gordie Howe International Bridge project and contribute to this iconic infrastructure project that will forever change the landscape in Windsor and Detroit. Like everyone involved, I take pride in seeing the meaningful outcome of my efforts and having the privilege of working alongside such a diverse group of individuals with a common goal.
“The connection of the bridge deck really delivered a sense of joy and exhilaration for everyone who is contributing to the project. You can see the pride and excitement through the smiles on the faces of workers from Canada and the United States who are a part of history in the making.”

Link-Belt Cranes Now Available for Rent at Dawes Rigging
Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental, a member of the ALL Family of Companies, is taking delivery of two new Link-Belt cranes, part of a larger package previously announced. This includes a LinkBelt HTC-80100XL truck crane and Link-Belt RTC-8065 II rough terrain crane, both available for rent now.
The HTC-80100XL truck crane is a strong, versatile machine prized for its 100-ton capacity and 164-foot power boom.
“It packs a lot of the same punch as an all-terrain crane, but with a much smaller footprint,” said Ryan Harrison, Dawes’ general manager. “It’s compact and road-ready, plus has great swing speeds.”
Harrison expects it to be in high demand in varied sectors, including steel erection, HVAC, and construction work such as pouring concrete, truss work and erecting wood-framed pole buildings, among others.
The RTC-8065 II, a 65-ton rough terrain, is a taxi fleet workhorse that is frequently used to
assist on construction sites.
Dawes has a deep history with Link-Belt and is an authorized dealer of the brand’s products.
Link-Belt lift equipment also is a core part of its own taxi fleet. When customers see the backing that Dawes and ALL have for
Link-Belt cranes, and watch them in action every day at Dawes’ own job sites, it gives them confidence. Harrison said that becomes a pow-
erful endorsement.
“It’s a clear sign of our investment in the product line, that we know its capabilities and the value Link-Belt brings to our own projects,” said Harrison. “When we continue to purchase Link-Belt lift equipment for our own fleet, our customers gain a comfort level with the product and also see regular evidence of the solid work these machines can do.”
As an authorized Link-Belt dealer, Dawes staffs factorytrained technicians to support the product line and is able to assist customers with purchasing, rental, parts and service for all Link-Belt equipment.
“From the retail standpoint, we’re fortunate to have a large customer base that believes in the product,” said Harrison. And, for prospective Link-Belt new equipment customers, “we can put these cranes to work on their own job sites to demonstrate firsthand they are worth the investment.”

The CRC1350S is equipped with numer ous standard features designed to enhance the customer experience and opera tional efficiency. These include an oversized cone feed hopper with an overflow chute, a straight-line undercrusher conveyor, a metal detector for enhanced safety, a hydraulically powered transfer chute and various axle configurations to facilitate easy plant permitting in all states.
The plant is designed for fast setup and operation, with easy-access maintenance platforms, a hydraulic folding walkway and integrated emergency stop stations to ensure operators quick return to production.
The CRC1350S plant delivers increased throughput and quality product shape.
Russ Burns, sales director, said, “Our focus with the CRC1350S was to address what customers consistently tell us they need: higher production, lower costs per ton and ease of mobility. This plant combines power, efficiency and portability to meet
those demands head-on.
Proven Performance in Field of Railroad Ballast Production
In a recent field test, the CRC1350S was utilized in a highproduction railroad ballast application. The project involved processing drilled and blasted granite material into 2 in. minus railroad ballast. Material was fed by a Cat 349 excavator into a Powerscreen 32 in. by 47 in. jaw crusher with a 5 in. closed side setting, reducing the granite to 9 in. minus.
From there, the material was conveyed to the Cedarapids CRC1350S, which was configured to produce three product variations: railroad ballast at 2 in. by 7/8 in., 3/4 in. stone and 1/2 in. minus dust. The CRC1350S produced an estimated 425 tph, split across the three products. While the plant demonstrated excellent performance, there is potential for even higher production rates with the use of a larger excavator and minor adjustments to the circuit, according to the manufacturer.
The customer expressed high satisfaction with the CRC1350S’s performance in the rail ballast configuration, highlighting the plant’s significant production capacity and ease of transport.

Terex Campsie Team Celebrates Five-Year Anniversary
Terex Campsie, the manufacturing center for leading Terex brands including Terex Ecotec, Green-Tec, and ProStack, celebrated its 5th anniversary since opening in 2019.
Over the past five years, the facility has become a key engineering and manufacturing facility for Terex, playing an essential role in advancing its brands across the waste management, recycling and bulk material handling industries.
Jonathan Hanna, general manager of Terex Campsie, said, “These past five years
have been a testament to the dedication, innovation and passion of our team at Terex Campsie. From the very beginning, our goal was to be at the forefront of the waste management, recycling sectors and conveying sectors, and today we are proud to see how far we’ve come.
“Our team has made significant strides in production capacity, product development and safety, and we look forward to many more years of success.”
In its first year, the facility quickly became
home for Terex Ecotec and Terex Conveying Systems. Just a year later, in 2020, a 30,000sq.-ft. expansion was completed, allowing for the addition of the ProStack product line. Production has seen substantial growth, with the facility reaching its 100th machine in 2020, 500th in 2022, and its 1,000th machine— the TDS 815 Slow Speed Shredder—in 2024.
Throughout this growth, the site has maintained a strong commitment to safety, celebrating 1,000 days without a lost-time inci-
dent in September 2024. Employment at Terex Campsie expanded from 15 employees in 2019 to over 150 today, reflecting the site’s ongoing development and investment in local talent.
Terex Campsie’s expansion has not only facilitated the production of industry-leading products but also enabled the site to drive a proactive product development strategy. This approach has resulted in a 50 percent expansion of operations since 2019, and output has tripled compared to its early years. Terex Campsie continues to serve global markets, exporting machines worldwide and reinforcing Terex’s position as a leading manufacturer of advanced environmental and conveying equipment.
“The last five years have been an incredible journey and reaching our 1,000th machine production milestone was a proud achievement for the entire team,” Hanna said. “While current market conditions have presented challenges, we remain committed to focusing on innovation, safety, and operational efficiency. As we navigate these times, our focus is on building a resilient foundation that positions the site for future growth and continued leadership in the waste management, recycling and conveying sectors.”

The Bandit team has brought the HM6420 hammermill grinder to market.
This highly productive 40 in. capacity grinder is designed and manufactured to be an alternative solution for those grinding applications that may contain contaminants. A Caterpillar C32, 1,200 hp engine provides ample torque and horsepower for optimal machine performance and productivity.
The heart of the HM6420 is a 50 in. diameter by. 66 in. wide hammermill. The heavy-duty mill features a 1.75 in. drum skin custom formed from rolled plate. The mill is supported by a 7 in. main shaft constructed of alloy steel that has been ultrasonic tested.
Each pocket within the mill is manufactured from high strength A-514 steel. These combinations create a structural sound mill for added durability and integrity. The mill is equipped with 20 carbide infused hammer inserts built to withstand the toughest material fed into the machine. Each holder is securely attached to the mill via a
quick change pocket system. Each holder recesses into the mill pock et, increasing durability.
A top plate covers the pocket and holds in place by six hex bolts. The hammer insert is attached to each holder utilizing two bolts. With this set-up, the mill hardware is easier and quicker to replace.
A heavy-duty slat-style infeed conveyor is direct ly driven generat ing more than 18,000 lbs. of pulling power. The large diameter feed wheel is also directly driven and provides an additional 17,000 lbs. of pulling power and 8,650 to 17,300 lbs. of down force when hydraulic pressure is applied. These combinations allow the HM6420 to grind massive quantities of material efficiently and effectively at one time.

gate, disengage the clutch, and reverse the feed.
A 56 in. dual discharge system with a stacking height of 16 ft. 8 in. is standard. The standard wireless remote controls all grinding and tracking functions and features an LCD screen that will display engine coolant temperature, engine oil pressure, engine load percentage, engine RPM, and battery voltage.
A proportional feed system is standard and regulates the feed
system from 82 to 132 ft. per minute. The HM6420 has one of the fastest feed rates on the market allowing it to quickly process material. The proportional feed system allows operators to adjust the feed based on material being processed ensuring maximum output and grinder efficiency, all while achieving a higher quality end-product.
Three screens are located on the top side of the HM6420 mill. A variety of screen sizes are available up to 7 in. to produce various endproduct sizes. The top feed wheel moves upward, and a removable screen cradle allows for quick screen set-up changes. All work for screen changing is performed outside of the machine.
An impact detection system is standard and designed to limit damage if a contaminant is struck inside the grinding chamber. Once an impact event is detected, the grinder will idle down, open the
Bandit initially debuted the HM6420 at the 2023 ConExpo show. After the show, further evaluation and testing was conducted and the machine was then demonstrated to a variety of customers and dealers at Bandit’s 40th Anniversary event in September of 2023. Final testing of the HM6420 took place in the fourth quarter and the machine will begin production in the first quarter of 2024. The addition of the HM6420 expands the already diverse line of Bandit horizontal grinders available.

MAJOR Improves Screen Media Durability With Strip Variant
MAJOR, a global manufacturer of high-performance wire screen media, introduced an advanced polyurethane (PU) strip variant for the FLEX-MAT Modular series.
The new variant increases the screen media’s durability, extending its lifespan and effectiveness in wet and corrosive environments, according to the manufacturer.
“While most screen media provide excellent durability, we noticed accelerated wear in some corrosive applications,” said Kevin Laporte, MAJOR R&D manager. “We immediately began testing to create a corrosive-resistant alternative we could develop into a new polyurethane variant. The new polyurethane strips would allow these specialty operations to benefit from FLEX-MAT’s productivity-boosting qualities while still maximizing uptime.”
The advanced PU strip features greater chemical stability to improve performance in alkaline, acidic and wet environments, such as limestone operations. Advanced durability extends the overall wear life of screen media in applications where the PU strips typically wear out before the steel wire and affect the integrity of the screen media.
"OPTIMUMWIRE bonds to our distinctive lime green PU strips to offer higher wire vibration than woven wire screen media. The unique chemical compound we developed for our advanced PU strips hold up well against corrosive materials to ensure the strips match the lifespan of our OPTI-
MUMWIRE and maintain screening integrity longer, up to 10 times in some cases," the company said.
The new durability of the PU strips still allows the same flexibility as the standard option so the wires can vibrate
freely. The high frequency of the OPTIMUMWIRE wire remains — 8,000 to 10,000 cycles per minute — to speed up material separation and passing.
Like MAJOR’s standard polyurethane composition, the advanced PU strips are available for the FLEXMAT Modular D, S and T Series. The new variant is not intended to completely replace the standard polyurethane.
“The advanced PU strips aren’t meant as a complete replacement for standard polyurethane. Instead, they’re a special-order option for screen media going into harsh environments,” Edwards said. “The best use of the advanced PU strips is when operations are screening corrosive or wet materials or when the operation notices their polyurethane is breaking down faster than the steel wire. In most cases, the standard polyurethane strip option continues to perform optimally for our customers.”
All FLEX-MAT screen media feature the company’s signature FLEX-MAT ID Enabled technology with an RFID tag embedded in the frame. This technology allows customers to easily access product information by scanning the RFID chip with The MAJOR App. Customers then have access to all screen media specifications and the ability to reorder without the need to climb onto the screen for physical measurements. Volvo Trucks’ Dealer...
M&K Truck Centers Leads Way With Orders of New Volvo VNL
Volvo Trucks North America dealer M&K Truck Centers is setting the standard across North America with sales of the allnew Volvo VNL — the truck designed to change everything.
Leading the charge in transforming the trucking industry, M&K recently secured an order of 25 of the trucks for its customer Orozco Trucking.
With its advanced aerodynamics, enhanced fuel efficiency, cutting-edge safety features and superior driver comfort, the allnew Volvo VNL is redefining what fleets can achieve, driving down operating costs and boosting productivity.
“M&K Truck Centers continues to deliver unmatched customer value with innovative solutions, and their success is reflected in the order of more than 500 all-new Volvo VNLs since sales started earlier this year,” said Jeremy Taylor, regional vice president — Central, Volvo Trucks North America.
“The all-new Volvo VNL sets a new standard with impressive gains in fuel efficiency, integrated safety features and enhanced driver comfort — key benefits that M&K continues to showcase to their customers. We applaud M&K’s dedication to customer service and their initiatives to expand service and maintenance programs, which are crucial in supporting a broad range of trucking solutions. Their commitment ensures that their customers receive not only innovative vehicles but also the ongoing support needed to maximize uptime and operational efficiency.”
M&K Truck Centers operates 28 dealership locations in six states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. With more than 35 years of supporting their customers, M&K has a reputation of being a forward-thinking dealership group known for retaining and supporting some of the industry’s most experienced and knowledgeable parts specialists, salespeople and certified technicians.
M&K representatives participated in the immersive and interactive launch events hosted by Volvo Trucks, which provided dealer staff and customers a deep dive into the 90 percent redesigned all-new Volvo VNL. These events offered hands-on opportunities to experience the all-new Volvo VNL and explore its packaging options and trim levels, guided by Volvo Trucks experts in the areas of fuel efficiency, safety, connectivity, uptime and driver focus.
M&K’s sales and service representatives also have access to the extensive competency development through e-learning and inperson courses from Volvo Academy to be fully trained in supporting the all-new Volvo
VNL.
Additionally, M&K completed the comprehensive sales and service training to establish three Volvo Trucks Certified Electric Vehicle Dealership locations, with a fourth location in process, which support a broad array of customer solutions from the all-new Volvo VNL to the battery-electric Volvo VNR Electric.
“M&K is committed to supporting our customers with comprehensive trucking solutions tailored to meet the unique demands of their operations. We had the opportunity to see the all-new VNL up close this summer and knew immediately that it would be unmatched in the customer value it provides,” said Andy Schulze, director of fleet sales at M&K Truck Centers.
“We’ve experienced incredible customer interest particularly in learning more about the state-of-the-art connectivity, which will serve to maximize uptime with the all-new VNL. Customers are also eager to experience up to a 10 percent fuel efficiency increase as well as all of the features that keep their drivers safe, comfortable and productive.”
With the launch of the all-new Volvo VNL, Volvo Trucks introduced a new spec’ing process, offering packaging options for interior and exterior trim levels, powertrain, technology, amenities and safety. This consultative approach to configuring and ordering — an industry first — streamlines and enhances the configuration and ordering process, enabling Volvo Trucks to deliver added value and cost savings compared to
the conventional a la carte spec’ing process, the manufacturer said.
M&K uses the online Volvo VNL configurator to help customers select the features and benefits of each trim level and cab option, as well as an ultra-realistic 360degree view of the truck’s interior and exterior. The configurator tool helped Orozco Trucking customize the optimal trucks for its operations.
Orozco Trucking, which has been in business for more than 25 years in the trucking and logistics industry, recently ordered 20 of the flagship long-haul sleeper VNL 860 model with the Edge interior and exterior trim. The trucks include the proprietary Volvo Active Driver Assist (VADA) package, which comes standard across all VNL models and includes forward collision avoidance technology to assist drivers in maintaining safe speeds and distances. The standard VADA package also offers adaptive cruise control and a new forward pedestrian detection feature that alerts the driver to pedestrians or bicyclists in their path.
The fleet also ordered five of the VNL 660 models, which provide maximum load capacity along with a luxurious living space for drivers. Orozco Trucking opted for the VADA Plus option in these models, which includes short-range detection to sense pedestrians and bicyclists in the truck’s blind and can activate frontal automatic emergency braking when objects are directly in the path of travel.
“We are proud to be one of the safest fleets in the industry and appreciate the qual-
ity and safety of newer equipment that is regularly maintained. We currently have more than 350 Volvo trucks in our fleet, which make up the majority of our vehicles,” said Konstantin Shaposhnykov, chief executive officer, Orozco Trucking.
“M&K demonstrated all the features of the all-new Volvo VNL and the benefits it will bring to our fleet, and we decided to add a variety of configurations and features, including the advanced safety package, to determine what worked best for our operations.”
Orozco Trucking’s drivers deliver loads throughout 48 states, so driver comfort also was a key consideration. The all-new Volvo VNL is designed with the driver in mind to optimize comfort, efficiency and safety when working, living and resting. It features Volvo Trucks’ most efficient idle management tool to help reduce or eliminate engine idling when the vehicle is stopped or parked.
The new ultra-quiet, proprietary, integrated Volvo Parking Cooler is a climate-control option that utilizes the onboard 24-volt battery system to power the cab’s HVAC when parked, reducing emissions, engine wear, and fuel costs. The Volvo Parking Cooler enhances the resting experience by eliminating noise and vibration from idling. For drivers parked in areas where idling is prohibited, the integrated Volvo Parking Cooler maintains a comfortable climate to maximize driver health, safety and well-being. Teleo, a company building autonomous technology for heavy construction equipment, and Storm Equipment, one of the largest distributors of commercial snow plow equipment, introduced the only remote-operated and autonomous industrial snow plow commercially offered in the United States.
With support from Teleo dealer RDO Equipment Co., the companies worked to retrofit a John Deere 332G skid steer loader with Storm Equipment’s Metal Pless snow plow blade and Teleo Supervised Autonomy, Teleo’s technology that enables remote and autonomous operations.
The machine is designed for mass snow clearing in large open areas such as industrial parking lots. Customers can order the retrofit of any make and model of heavy equipment for remote-operated and autonomous operations from Teleo, along with an autonomousready snow plow blade properly sized for each machine type from Storm Equipment.
Once outfitted with Teleo’s retrofit kit, the machines are supervised by an operator sitting in a central command center, a more comfortable and attractive working environment than a traditional snow plow operator working from the equipment’s cab on site. The machines are created to help solve staffing shortages in the commercial snow plow industry, where snow contractors are covering larger regions and working long overnight hours, by allowing a single hired operator to work in multiple regions simultaneously.
Initially, the snow plows will be remote-operated and autonomous capabilities will be added in the first half of 2024.
“Remote operation of snow plows is a truly disruptive prospect for the industry,” said Jordan
Smith, owner, Storm Equipment.
“Snow removal companies typically don’t have just one make or model in their fleets, so the fact that Teleo’s technology can be retrofitted onto virtually any make and model of heavy machinery makes it a great option for the industry.
“Utilizing Teleo’s game-changing system, the shrinking pool of skilled snow plow operators can cover a lot more ground in a shorter time period. With the click of a button, they can move to a different loader and plow on a job site across town, or even in a different state. This effectively could quadruple the productivity of a single skilled staff member, creating massive operational efficiencies for the snow contractor.
“This technology could also open up snow plowing opportunities to those who are not already
heavy equipment operators. We like to joke that today’s streaming gamers could become tomorrow’s remote snow plow operators.
Simply put, remote-operated and autonomous snow removal demonstrates undeniable value for contractors looking for the best
return on their heavy equipment investments.”
Fleets of machines that are used for applications such as loading gravel, peat moss and other bulk materials in warmer months are used to move snow in the winter months. Teleo’s technology can be easily retrofitted on those fleets, introducing the ability to integrate remote and semi-autonomous technology without the need to purchase new machines. The same machines can be used year-round for snow removal, landscaping, and other site work. This level of flexibility makes the system extremely scalable and cost effective, the company said.
“Commercial snow removal, specifically mass snow clearing in large parking lots and on other long stretches of open, flat surfaces, is yet another ideal application for our technology,” said Vinay Shet, co-founder and CEO, Teleo. “When heavy snowfalls occur, there is an immediate need to clear parking lots and commercial sites so businesses can continue operating. We believe we are offering the only remote-operated and autonomous industrial snow plow available in the U.S.
“The collaborative Teleo-Storm Equipment approach introduces a way to get the job done more efficiently, safely and without customers having to purchase new machines; that makes it a realistic solution for companies of all sizes.”
In addition to the commercial snow removal industry, Teleo also serves customers in construction and material moving. The new snow plow follows Teleo’s recent announcement outlining its growing global dealer network and customer base.

Boss Offers Key to Contractor Success for Snow, Ice Removal
As snow and ice blanket roads and walkways, the need for efficient deicing material application becomes a top priority. Snow and ice contractors face numerous challenges in managing these materials effectively, from ensuring safety to minimizing costs.
Boss Snowplow understands these challenges firsthand. That’s why the company is committed to crafting durable products capable of withstanding harsh winter conditions and dedicated to supporting contractors in their pursuit of business sustainability and growth.
Why Material Application Management Matters
• Safety: Proper material application is essential for ensuring the safety of both contractors and the public. By effectively using de-icing materials like salt, sand or brine, slippery conditions on roads, walkways and parking lots can be minimized, reducing the risk of accidents.
• Cost Effectiveness: Efficient material application management translates to cost savings. By accurately calibrating equipment and targeting specific problem areas, contractors can minimize waste and ensure optimal resource utilization, thus maximizing their profitability.
• Environmental Impact: Responsible material application practices are key to minimizing negative environmental effects. By using environmentally friendly deicing materials
and controlling application rates, contractors can reduce chemical runoff into water bodies, mitigate damage to vegetation and preserve infrastructure integrity.
• Compliance: Snow and ice contractors must adhere to regulations and standards set by local authorities. Proper material application management ensures compliance with these regulations, safeguarding against penalties and upholding professional integrity.
• Customer Satisfaction: High-quality material application leads to improved customer satisfaction. Contractors who consistently provide safe and well-maintained winter conditions are more likely to retain clients and receive posi-

tive referrals, thus bolstering their reputation and business success.
• Performance and Efficiency: Effective management of material applications enhances overall performance and efficiency. By avoiding issues such as overuse or underuse of materials and ensuring even distribution, contractors can deliver superior service quality and faster response times, thereby enhancing their competitive edge.
• Risk Management: Proper application and management of materials are crucial for reducing liability risks. When materials are used promptly and appropriately, the likelihood of accidents or injuries is minimized, mitigating potential legal issues and safeguarding the contractor’s business interests.
Material application management is the cornerstone of success for snow and ice contractors. Boss Snowplow recognize the importance of this aspect of winter maintenance and is committed to supporting contractors in mastering it. With the release of the VBX+ and upcoming SR MAG spreader controls, Boss provides tools that empower contractors to track materials dispensed and optimize their operations for maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

Jobs Rise, But Finding Qualified Workers Remains Tough
the previous peak in 2006, according to Anat Nusinovich, economist of the National Association of REALTORS (NAR)
She said nationally the average growth rate of construction jobs from 2007 to 2023 was 0.4 percent.
Though the housing sector is one part of the construction market, it does serve as an indicator of just how construction jobs affect the economy.
Numbers Speak Volumes
Between 2007 and 2011, the construction jobs growth rate was negative, reaching a low of -16 percent in 2009 during the Great Recession.
“The rate saw another significant decline during the pandemic, dropping from 2.8 percent in 2019 to3.2 percent in 2020,” said Nusinovich. “However, the construction industry has since rebounded, reaching a growth rate of 3.3 percent in 2023,” — 0.5 points higher than pre-pandemic.”
The economist noted that this year, the local average growth rate for construction jobs is 2.9 percent, matching pre-pandemic numbers from 2019.
According to the NAR report, approximately 70 percent of analyzed areas outperformed this rate over the past year.
Notably, between 2019 and 2024, Cleveland, Tenn., registered the highest growth rate at 60.0 percent.
Elizabethtown, Ky., and Fayetteville, Ark., came in at 57.1 percent and 42.9 percent, respectively.
Further, two areas in Idaho — Idaho Falls with 37.5 percent and Boise City with 37.2 percent — came in the fifth and sixth places.
Punta and Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Fla., also showed “significant” growth, ranking fourth at 39.5 percent and tenth at 35.4 percent, respectively.
Meanwhile, Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas, and ChicagoNaperville-Elgin, Ill.-Ind., experienced the lowest growth rates at 0.5 percent.
These two cities were followed by Midland, Texas, with 0.7 percent, “despite having the highest share of construction jobs in 2024,” said the NAR.
“Between July 2019 and July 2024, only 7.3 percent of the areas recorded no growth in construction jobs, with a growth rate of zero.”
However, NAR’s Nusinovich said, from before the pandemic until this summer, 17.3 percent of the observed areas experienced negative growth rates. That indicates a a loss of construction workers, she said, noting that the biggest losses were in Lake Charles, La., whose rate was -52.2 percent.
Next in line was Johnstown, Pa., with -37.9 percent, and AugustaRichmond County, Ga.-S.C., at29.9 percent.
“Ithaca, New York, which also had the lowest concentration of construction jobs, saw a decline of 21.4 percent in its construction workforce since 2019.”
The AGC also tracks construction employment trends and found that 80 percent of U.S. states saw jobs increases in September. In all, 24 states and the District of Columbia added construction jobs between August and September of this year, according to the association.
More states would have added workers year-over-year if contractors could find enough qualified applicants, said AGC.
“It is great that four out of five states have added construction jobs over the past year,” Ken Simonson, chief economist, said in a statement.
“Even more states would be seeing gains if there were enough qualified workers available to fill job openings,” the association told ConstructConnect.
In its BLS analysis, AGC found construction jobs rose from September to September in 40 states and declined in 10 states and the District of Columbia.
Texas added the most construction jobs, at 42,300, followed by Florida, with 37,100; Ohio, 16,400; Michigan, 12,600; and Indiana, 12,500.
The largest percentage increases were in Alaska, with 3,700 jobs and Hawaii, with 4,500. Oklahoma, at 7,800, and Nevada, at 10,000, followed.
New York State saw the largest loss, at, -6,900 or -1.8 percent, followed by Oregon, -4,800 or -4.1 percent and Maryland, -4,600 or2.9 percent.
AGC reported Oregon had the largest percentage loss, followed by Maryland and Maine.
“For the month, construction employment … was unchanged in Minnesota, Rhode Island and Vermont,” said the association. “Texas added the most jobs, followed by Ohio, Florida, South Carolina and Colorado.”
Ohio had the largest percentage gain, followed by South Carolina, Alaska and Nebraska.
Tennessee lost the most construction jobs in the month. Oregon and Louisiana followed.
North Dakota lost the highest percentage of jobs. Oregon and West Virginia were next.
“The value of construction starts rose 1.8 percent year-over-year in September,” said AGC.
But the sector “edged down 0.9 percent year-to-date in the first nine months of 2024 compared to January-September 2023,” ConstructConnect reported.
Nonresidential building starts rose 1 percent for the month but fell 7.5 percent year-to-date. Civil starts increased.
Among the 25 largest categories, AGC found that the best-performing year-to-date are electric power infrastructure and airports.
On a year-to-date basis through September, total construction starts were up 2 percent from 2023, according to Dodge Construction analysis.
Nonbuilding starts slipped 3 percent over that year and miscellaneous nonbuilding starts were up 10 percent.
Environmental public works starts were up 7 percent; highway and bridge starts, 3 percent and utility/gas starts down 23 percent.
Nonresidential building starts rose 2 percent year-to-date; institutional starts were up 13 percent; commercial starts were down 2 percent.
According to AGC, the Fed’s take on the construction picture is that economic activity was “little changed” since early September.
The government reported commercial real estate markets were generally flat, although data center and infrastructure projects boosted activity in some areas.
“Contacts noted that it remained difficult to find workers with certain skills or in some industries,
such as technology, manufacturing and construction.”
According to ConstructConnect, AGC officials urged Congress to increase funding for construction workforce training and education programs.
The association believes the funding will help address workforce shortages likely holding back employment growth in the sector.
“Enabling more people to learn about construction as a career opportunity is essential,” said Jeffrey Shoaf, CEO of AGC, adding that learning would help fill the openings created by the infrastructure, power and manufacturing projects under way.
Industry Looking Toward Future
Also tracking the construction jobs market, and chiefly how IIJA stacks up jobs-wise at its midway point is ARTBA.
The transportation builders association said the highway, street and bridge construction industry added nearly 40,000 jobs over the first half of IIJA.
“Industry employment surpassed record levels in 2023 and has continued rising since on a year-over-year basis,” said ARTBA.
Looking forward, the Eno Center for Transportation believes 2024 could be “the tipping point” for IIJA funding to “start pouring out of the U.S. Treasury.”
Jeff Davis, Eno senior fellow, recounted that IIJA loaded the Highway Trust Fund with 24 percent more money for highway account programs.
The 2021 bipartisan bill also allotted 32 percent for mass transit. Increases afterward are estimated in the 2- to 3-percent range per year.
Davis said through the first 10 months of fiscal year 2024, highway account outlays are up 20 percent from the 10-month mark preIIJA, in FY 2021.
“And mass transit account outlays are up 49 percent over FY 2021,” said Davis, adding that the 2021 level suffered more from COVID aid displacement.
At IIJA’s half-way point a year ago, the Brookings Institute predicted that IIJA’s total economic impact would “continue to evolve.”
Adie Tomer, senior fellow, said
that as more states and localities put federal dollars to work, an increased demand for skilled labor was expected.
He said that economists expected a high number of separations within infrastructure occupations would continue to challenge recruiting and retention.
“Construction of IIJA-funded projects will last well beyond 2026, when the legislation expires,” said Tomer.
Inflation Reduction Act tax credits will support energy-related projects for another nine years.
“America needs to get serious about growing and diversifying the infrastructure talent pipeline, because time is running out,” he stressed a year ago.
Marcum, a construction accounting firm, found in an industry survey that in 2024 the outlook across the board is a positive one.
“Our survey reveals that despite the challenges facing the construction industry, the overall outlook remains positive,” said Joseph Natarelli.
The top concerns revealed in the survey can help business strategize for the future, said Roger Gingerich, leading Marcum’s Midwest construction practice.
The survey found that ongoing labor recruiting and retention struggles remain a top concern for construction companies. In fact, 29 percent of Marcum survey respondents cited it as the biggest threat to their business.
The Associated Builders & Contractors noted that though construction firms have made gains, BLS statistics show a sharp decrease in job openings
“At the same time, there is not a lot of labor out there but demand for labor has subsided a little,” said Zack Fritz, ABC economist.
As of September, construction unemployment was at 3.7 percent, just above the August mark of 3.2 percent.
“To be a craft worker in construction, you generally need to have experience and credentials in the construction field,” said AGC’s Simonson said.
He called it a chronic problem and despite the economic gains he believes the labor employment picture will continue to hamstring the industry. CEG
‘Machinery Pete’ Interviews Jack Lyon On RFD TV
“Machinery Pete” hosted a television interview Oct. 19, 2024, with auction industry icon, Jack Lyon, president of Alex Lyon & Son.
The television special on Machinery Pete’s show on RFD TV came about through a more than 20-year friendship and business relationship between Jack Lyon and Lynn Odland, CEO and founder of Dakota Shine/Dakota AG Innovations.
Odland felt it was time for Alex Lyon & Son’s story to be told and brought in his friend Machinery Pete to not only interview Lyon, but also to film the story for his Machinery Pete show. The original show aired Oct. 19, 2024, and reran Oct. 22, 2024. If you have not seen it, scan the QR code on this page.
During the interview, Greg Peterson, also known as “Machinery Pete,” discussed a wide range of subjects with Jack Lyon about his company, Alex Lyon & Son, including how the auction firm started with his father; when Jack took the reins of the company; Jack’s philosophy on how he and his staff run the business and live their lives; and how his usage of Construction Equipment Guide (CEG) throughout his many years in business has helped build Alex Lyon & Son into a widely respected auction leader.
The interview was hosted on the Machinery Pete show on RFD-TV, a channel that features programming devoted to rural issues, concerns and interests. This channel is available on most cable TV packages and can be streamed using major streaming services, including Roku and Apple TV. For more information, visit www.thempadvantage.com
