Antique Truck Lovers, NE Rockbusters Join for Sixth Annual Machine Show By Jay Adams CEG CORRESPONDENT

In trucking, cooperation is everything. The same could be said for construction work, all contracting and the running of any successful club or organization. Cooperation in all these arenas came together as one at the Antique Truck Club of America’s Little Rhody Chapter’s Sixth Annual Antique Truck Show on Sept. 13 on the Washington County Fairgrounds in Richmond, R.I. Working in conjunction with the Historical Construction Equipment Association’s (HCEA) Northeast Rockbusters once again, more than 60 members of the local Antique Truck Club brought out their finest old equipment, to the delight and surprise of other members, guests and enthusiasts. The Antique Truck Club and the Rockbusters hold this event every September, drawing people from every New England state. Machines that range from the unusual to the sublime fill the flat fields of the fairgrounds for passersby to

admire. “We combine our shows. We support them and they support us, even in the rain,” said Jackie Volatile, who organizes these shows with her husband, Roger, the club’s president. What made the presidential couple so proud this year was that the event was organized to raise money and food for the Rhode Island Food Bank. We brought in 800 pounds of canned goods. Last year, we fed 2,000 needy families for a year and we are quite proud of that,” said Jackie Volatile. They also are very proud of the cooperation and shared interests of their members who bring any and all working antique machines to these events, as long as they are able. “We welcome classic trucks, we welcome tractors, anything that comes in,” added Roger Volatile. “Antique is antique to us.” The Volatiles represent the Little Rhody Chapter at national events, usually held in the National Chapter’s home state of Pennsylvania. “There are 21 different chapters in the see ROCKBUSTERS page 14

Congressman Hits Pace Mass. Spending Stim BOSTON (AP) A Minnesota congressman is criticizing the pace Massachusetts is spending economic stimulus money for transportation projects. Minnesota Democrat James Oberstar, the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure chair, told Gov. Deval Patrick that Massachusetts was 49th in the country in using highway stimulus money. The state has received $437 million in highway funds, but only about $99 million in construction work was under way by Aug. 31. In a letter, Oberstar urged Patrick to refocus, citing critical jobs created by the projects. Patrick responded that Massachusetts was focused on selecting projects that create spinoff work and permanent jobs. He said in a letter that ambitious projects take longer to deliver, but “provide greater long-term economic growth.’’ Patrick said a separate report ranked Massachusetts 5th in how it’s handled stimulus funds.

Mass. Seeks Plans for ‘High Performance’ Buildings By Steve LeBlanc ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

BOSTON (AP) Think “high performance’’ and visions of muscle cars pop to mind — not municipal buildings. Massachusetts is hoping to change that image by encouraging the development of “high performance’’ schools, hospitals, businesses and homes. The state is offering $15 million in federal stimulus dollars for proposals for super-energy efficient buildings. The state said it wants projects that dramatically reduce energy consumption and substitute renewable energy sources for fossil fuels. The state also is looking for breakthrough technologies that can be used in buildings throughout Massachusetts — with its snowy winters and muggy summers — and that go far beyond existing state and utility energy efficiency programs. Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Ian Bowles said high performance buildings represent the next stage in energy efficiency after strategies such as better insulation and tighter windows have achieved

more modest 5 to 15 percent reductions in energy use. “We’ve figured out some of the basics,’’ he said. “What we haven’t figured out is how to standardize an approach that gets us to a 50 percent reduction.’’ That’s particularly true for the state’s aging, drafty housing stock — including its iconic tripledeckers. One hope from the grant program is to develop ways to make entire neighborhoods of older homes dramatically more energy efficient at an affordable cost, Bowles said. “How do you do large-scale community conversions? These are the really difficult questions we haven’t been able to figure out.’’ The ultimate goal? The “zero net’’ building. Zero net buildings rely on everything from super-efficient insulation to solar panels, wind turbines and geothermal power to be energy neutral, producing as much energy as they consume. That’s easier said than done — and easier for new buildings where designers can factor in efficiencies from scratch.

standards will be incorporated into most existing building codes. “Earlier on there was more focus on costs, does it make sense? That is really now being replaced with the notion that it’s really become where the industry is at,’’ Beeman said. As part of the grant program, the state is looking for projects that tackle a series of challenges including retrofits that cut energy consumption in half for existing buildings and conservation measures in buildings heated with fuel oil, propane and other unregulated fuels. The program also is looking for projects that demonstrate new technologies like ultra low emissions biomass-fired boilers and furnaces, solar thermal space heating and cooling systems, passive, thermal energy storage and high efficiency cold-climate heat pumps. Finally, the state is seeking proposals to mobilize entire communities to cut energy use and boost efficiency. Awards will range from $500,000 to $5 million. The deadline is Oct. 28 and the state hopes to announce winners in December.

The administration has already formed a Zero Net Energy Task Force and recommended two state building projects that strive to get close to the zero net energy goal. Gov. Deval Patrick wants to make zero net energy buildings the construction industry standard in the state by 2030. The grant program, run by the state Department of Energy Resources, is a step in that direction, according to Bowles. “Green buildings’’ — once seen as pricey, boutique undertakings — are rapidly going mainstream, according to Greg Beeman, president of the Massachusetts Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors. “Within the commercial construction market, the broader focus on green and sustainable construction which places a high value on energy efficiency ... has really taken hold,’’ he said. That can mean anything from solar installations to increased use of natural light, he said. Beeman said the shift toward sustainability is practical as well as environmental. Customers are demanding it and many builders assume that over time sustainability

Antique Iron Draws Crowds to Richmond for Annual Show ROCKBUSTERS from page 14

Weston showed off three beautiful pieces of classic heavy iron equipment, including a 1934 McCormick Deering tractor, owned by Dave Burnham, president of the local HCEA chapter, a 1948 Clete Track Tractor and a 1949 Bucyrus Erie Earth Mover. “What’s really special about this Bucyrus Erie is that, except for some advances in technology, it is still produced the same way, and the basic concept hasn’t changed since the 1940s,” said Weston.

Fending off Buyers One of the most unusual pieces of running equipment at the show was a 1930s Clete Track Tractor owned by Fred York of Dunns Corners, Westerly, R.I. “I found it buried in the woods,” said York. “There were trees growing through it and pine needles across it. After Delays, I-93 Widening Project Back on Track in N.H. DERRY, N.H. (AP) After a series of delays, the Interstate 93 widening project is back on track in New Hampshire with some bridge and roadwork expected to be done by next year. Construction is currently focusing on exit 3 in Windham. The goal is to add additional lanes and longer ramps and give drivers less of a curve to navigate.

Transportation officials said those who commute along I-93 should get used to seeing a lot of heavy equipment over the next few years as the state works to expand what ranks as the 28th most congested stretch of highway in the country. Work on two new bridges and a southbound off-ramp are expected to be finished by June 2010.
