There are self-taught contractors and then, there is Alan Ouellette. Most diggers learn from the ground up. They find the earth itself — with its slabs, rock formations, pitfalls, mineral deposits and undetermined foundations — to be the ultimate test. But about 20 years ago, Ouellette, president of A O Construction Inc. Attleboro, Mass., studied for the state tests that established the parameters of the industry before digging his first holes. Helping Out Mom In 1993, Ouellette taught himself a new trade when his Mom needed a favor. “I was never in the excavation business but my mom needed a septic system and I wanted a new direction in life,” said Ouellette. “I said ‘let me research this.’ and I called the
Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM). and asked them for study materials. I studied and took the test to be a septic installer. “I bought my first backhoe — a 1979 John Deere 410. I taught myself how to operate it by clearing the back lot at my mom’s house. I took drafting way back in high school, so after learning how to design a system by reading the RIDEM rules and regulations, I designed and installed my first system and got a successful inspection. I’ve been installing systems and doing site work and expanding ever since.” Two years later, in 1995, Ouellette founded A O Construction in Pawtucket, R.I., before moving operations to newer, bigger headquarters in Attleboro, Mass. A O Construction specializes in excavation, site work, septic systems, demolition, ledge removal, utility installation, curbing, etc., for the commercial and residential markets. see OuEllETTE page 4

Centuries-Old Buried Live Oak Put to Use in Athol, Mass. By George Barnes TELEGRAM & GAZETTE
ATHOL, Mass. (AP) If wood could talk, the old beams in Thomas Mann’s lumber yard would sound like a chatty ship’s bosun. They are gnarly, tough and interesting. “They are nearly bulletproof,” Mann said. Mann, owner of Mann Lumber Co., has a big pile of dark-colored beams in his yard that are unlike other salvaged materials he has collected for resale. First of all, these beams are not his. They belong to Partners HealthCare, the parent company of Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. The beams are special in part because they are probably at least 300 years old and were buried in the former Charlestown Naval Yard before the Civil War, possibly to preserve them for use in repairing sailing vessels. They were discovered when the company started construction on a new Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital on one of the parcels at the former naval yard. Mann has had the timbers for two years, waiting for Partners HealthCare to decide what to do with them. “When they went to build a new waterfront hospital, they discovered lots and lots of them buried in the former naval yard,” he said. Once the company figured out that the large logs were for building and repairing old
sailing vessels, the company gave three-quarters of them to Mystic Seaport: The Museum of America and the Sea, which is in the middle of restoring the world’s last surviving wooden whaling vessel, the Charles W. Morgan. The vessel is undergoing a $10 million restoration. The timbers, which are in remarkably good condition, considering they have been buried since the mid-1800s, are the same type of wood used to build the Morgan in 1841. “The hospital kept 25 percent of the wood so it could be put to some reuse,” Mann said. Finding the eventual reuse involved two years of the hospital building project’s architects accepting and rejecting designs that would not work in some way with the overall design or would be a problem to create out of the wood. Mann said the wood is live oak, an evergreen oak found in the south. For wooden ships the wood was much sought after, because the unusual grain makes the wood extremely hard. “It also grows curved, which makes it good for ship building,” Mann said. The wood was a bonanza for the ship museum, which had taken to reclaiming live oaks that had fallen for some reason, including many trees that were blown down by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Mann’s yard is filled with wood and other building materials he has purchased that he
will either rework and sell or resell outright, including a 40-ft. (12 m) beam from an old mill in Merrimac he said may be close to 400 years old. He does not own the Charlestown Naval Yard wood. “I am only its steward for a while,” he said, although the wood has been in his yard on Petersham Road in Athol for two years. Mann came into possession of the wood after he bought a new sawmill. Another sawmill owner had the responsibility of using the old wood, but he was retiring. After an extensive vetting process, Mann said it was decided he had the knowledge and equipment to properly work with the wood. His family has been in the wood business for three generations. When the wood was discovered, Mann said, the owners immediately grasped the importance of what they found. He said the live oak beams are pieces of seafaring history. When ships were built, he said shipyards often kept duplicate pieces of wood to repair any damage. The pieces of wood are all numbered as if they were part of an inventory the Navy was keeping before the era of wooden ships ended. Partners HealthCare chose not to just sell it off, giving about 140 pieces to Mystic and keeping the rest to do something to honor the wood and its history. “They knew they had to do something with it,” he said.
The ideas included making furniture for offices for the hospital, or installing it in some way into the design of the building. For two years, designs were put forward that were just not what the hospital wanted. “They kept trying to come up with designs instead of letting the wood decide what it wants to have done,” Mann said. On the last day of the year, they contacted him and told him they had a plan for some of the wood. Within days he was working on his first commission, to make a two-piece bench that will be installed in a public area between the hospital and the waterfront. The piece he is working on first is a few feet thick with a beautiful curve to it. He has been working to dry it out and smooth it off enough so it will be comfortable for public use. He said it will not be sanded down much because the owners want the character of the wood to be retained as much as possible. The second piece of the bench is on a flatbed truck. Mann said he plans to load it into his wood shop and work on it side-by-side with the other piece. The bench will be substantial. A second single-piece bench also is being made. The rest of the wood, a few dozen large pieces, including one that is about 31 sq. in. (200 sq cm), are still being looked at by the architects. And eventually, Mann said the wood will let them know what it should become.

Hydraulic Cranes 6-365 Ton
By Stanley Hurwitz SPECIAL TO CEG He sounds like a relative talking about preserving a family heirloom. That’s how Tom Bigelow describes Bigelow & Fleming’s involvement in the restoration of the iconic StandardTimes Building, erected in 1894 in downtown New Bedford, Mass. “We’re really proud and excited to be part of the team on this unique project,” he said. Bigelow is a founding principal of the company. Bigelow & Fleming based in Easton, Mass., and celebrating its 10th anniversary, expects to hand over the shell to the owner/developer around the end of January — on time and on budget. He said B & F was chosen by property owner The Columbus Group of Boston for the initial $2.5 million preparation phase of the historic renovation based on his firm’s track record. B & F has managed construction projects for such blue-ribbon clients as Gillette, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Babson College and Brandeis University, to name a few. “In addition to new construction, we’ve built a reputation for breathing new life into old buildings,” Bigelow said. The property, at 555 Pleasant St.,
opposite the public library, has been vacant since the Standard-Times newspaper moved to modern offices in 1995. The structure, designed by architects Peabody and Stearns, is in the Central New Bedford Historic District. Joining Bigelow & Fleming on the renovation team are historic preservation consultants MacRostie Historic Advisors LLC of Washington, D.C., who have been working with the National Park Service to ensure fulfillment of federal tax credit requirements, and the Boston firm of Steffian Bradley Architects who designed the renovation. “Our team’s assignment in the $6 million adaptive reuse project was to gut the five-story, 34,000 square-foot building to prepare it for build-outs that will ultimately house offices on floors 2 to 5 and a restaurant on the street level,” said Bigelow. Among his key team members are Project Manager and Licensed Structural Engineer Mike Farrer, and Project Supervisor, John Arruda. Local trades people have been employed for the work. “Removing everything down to the bricks and beams in a 19th century structure — without affecting the shell — takes a highly skilled team,” said Bigelow. “We’re right on schedule, preparing to turn over the shell to the
owner in early 2013.” The work included several complex components: • Installation of a new elevator in the old air shaft • Allow access and emergency egress for residents of the adjacent condos throughout this entire initial construction phase (occupied space renovation is a B & F specialty) • Installation of new energy-efficient windows had to meet requirements of the Historical Commission • Installation of new mechanical systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing and bathrooms) on every floor Bigelow & Fleming’s renovation and ground-up construction work is primarily in southern New England and falls into these categories: biotechnology, education, corporate, healthcare and specialty construction. “We’re excited about the critical part we’re playing to bring back the old Standard-Times Building and restore new life to this part of downtown New Bedford,” said Bigelow. “Our watchword is close collaboration, teamwork and communication. That combination brings our projects together seamlessly and without surprises.” For more information, call 617/2246990 or visit www.bigelowfleming.com.
