Reputation, Hard Work Contribute to Company Success ADH from page 1
Sandwich and Harwich, Mass. Soon, another Hashem was ready to join the operation, the fourth generation to do so. “I was all by myself for the first five to eight years, and then, Timmy, my son, got out of [high] school. He was looking for something to do. I was doing a bigger project in Rockland, Mass., site work for these condominiums, 96 units. Timmy came to work for me as a laborer, slowly learning to run the equipment. He stayed with me for four or five years.” In 1999, Tim Hashem, like all the other excavators in the bloodline, wanted to venture out on his own. “He wanted to branch out and go in his own direction. He took on one of the excavators with the payment, and branched out, forming T & T Excavating, also out of Middleboro. He specializes in Title Five [septic] installation and repairs,” said the proud father, who also is now Tim’s next-door neighbor.
It wasn’t easy; it was a Many Projects to Dig challenge to be solved. With Tim by his side, “On LeBaron Golf Hashem worked for some Course, we had the propthree years on Willow erty line on one side, the Pond Condominiums in course on the other, and Rockland, Mass., followed we only had a 30-foot strip by all the site work for the of land. like Advanced Auto Parts, Rockland Trust in Abington, Mass., Bright Horizons Day Care in Foxboro, large house lots in Abington, the Fort Devens Water Treatment Pump Station (the removal of huge underground tanks), and others. “The Town of Holbrook used our work as an example of how they wanted the roads done in their town [for a subdivision of roads at Beachtree Estates],” said Hashem. Offers Many Services ADH Contracting Inc. offers a wide range of excavation services, including installing roads (a complete package from cutting trees to asphalt), site work and site projects, such as water treatment plants, installing septic systems, excavation for all house lots, spreading loam, and, in the wintertime, snow plowing. “I’ve had a steady snow plow contract since the day I’ve been in business,” Hashem said. The company has grown beyond his own family. “Right now, I have a crew of six to eight. When things get busy, up to 10 people. Most of my guys have been with me, six, eight, 10 years,” said Hashem. “It’s more like a family-operated business. I let the guys run their own jobs and make their own decisions to make them feel part of the team. I help them by overseeing the job.” What makes his company stand out and last? Honesty. “We basically stay in business because of our reputation. We’re not overpriced. We’re not underpriced. We adjust to the times. We’re an honest contractor. We just try to get an honest day’s pay for an honest day’s work. And we don’t add a lot of extras. When we’re finished, you will not see many extras at the end of the job,” he said. “My guys are loyal and hard working and they feel part of the team. Everybody gets along and nobody bickers. They are handpicked guys and they are very dedicated.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG

As a marine construction firm in New England, Riverside and Pickering Marine Contractors works hard to meet customer demands while keeping a watchful eye on the fast-changing weather along the Atlantic Ocean. “Anything we can do to be more efficient and to deal with Mother Nature — which is both our enemy and our friend — is beneficial,” said Ken Anderson, who owns the Eliot, Maine, firm with his brother, Doug. “And that’s why our VersaHandler V417 telescopic tool carrier is so valuable. In just one phase of our business, it has cut our time in half. Believe me, that’s significant.” The company does commercial and residential marine construction for waterfront communities in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Specialties include piers, docks, floats, wharves, pile driving, landscape construction and design, seawalls, dock repairs and dock rebuilds. While the Andersons continue to find more applications for the VersaHandler V417, the major use — and the real timesaver — is handling the pilings needed in building docks. “Our skid steer loader, a very versatile machine, was having difficulty picking up more than one of the pilings at a time,” Ken said. “It was a slow process to move a dozen or more pilings around in order to find the one we needed.”
After reading about the Bobcat line of telescopics in WorkSaver magazine, he contacted Bobcat of New Hampshire. “We selected the V417 because of its compact size and good lift capacity,” Ken said. “Using a Bobcat grapple, we can move two to four pilings at a time. We can telescope the grapple out 17 feet to the back of the pile to pick up the piling we want. Loading a barge to head out is completed in half the time it previously took.” The V417 is used in both the yard and at job sites. “Most of our waterside work is done with cranes and barges,” Doug said. “On a recent job, however, the water was too shallow to use our barge so we could not bring in the crane to set the pilings. We put the auger attachment on the V417, drove across the customer’s property to auger in the pilings. We were able to telescope over the water to do the work. That was much easier than doing it by hand.” The family-owned business takes pride in its workmanship, quality products, affordability and service — and in always having an Anderson on the job. Vermont Lawmakers Pass $76M Borrowing Package for Capital Construction Projects MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Vermont lawmakers have approved a $76 million package of borrowing for capital construction projects. On the list: another installment in a new state office building in Bennington, $6.5 million for school construction and $4.5 million for expansion of broadband Internet service. The bill excludes some items that in other years might be
included in a capital construction bill, including $10 million toward the construction of new space for mental health patients. That was included in the general fund budget bill, and is being paid for out of enhanced federal Medicaid funds. Among other major expenditures that are in the capital bill are $4.7 million for a new Health Department laboratory in Colchester.
For the First Time, Vermont’s Highway Reconstruction Projects Exceed $100M MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) For the first time, a season’s highway reconstruction projects are exceeding $100 million in Vermont. That milestone was marked May 10 by Gov. Jim Douglas, Vermont Transportation Secretary David Dill and other officials, who planned a paving celebration in Sheldon.
The state paving expenditure for the 2010 construction season will top $100 million for the first time. That will include the resurfacing of nearly 250 mi. (402 km) of Interstate, state and local roadways. Douglas also said that due to the unusually mild winter, the state finished the year with a surplus in its winter maintenance budget.
