E. Pihl & Son to Complete Critical Boston University Span by June 30 years while repairs were effected and a new lane configuration was established to provide better access for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists — was well-received when traffic cones were removed and access granted again in both directions in winter. In fact, groups like the LivableStreets Alliance came out to celebrate its unofficial completion by handing out baked goods and asking walkers to sign postcards. That group thanked E. Pihl & Son and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) for considering the various needs of commuters of all kinds and people with disabilities through its new design flow which accommodates all travelers, no matter what vehicle they are using to cross it. The B.U. Bridge is one of only three bridges and off-ramps
After three years, the rebuilt Boston University (B.U.) Bridge — a critical car, foot and bike artery for tens of thousands of students along the elongated campus of B.U. along Commonwealth Avenue, Kenmore Square and Fenway Park — will officially be marked “complete” on June 30. Originally named “Cottage Farm Bridge,” the bridge was built in 1928 and renamed the B.U. Bridge for the growing university it was serving in 1949. The Canton, Mass.-based branch of Denmark’s noteworthy international contracting company E. Pihl & Son completed the estimated $19.5 million project on time (30 months) and on budget. The new fresh, constantly-traveled bridge — half closed for two-and-a-half Concrete placement on the bridge’s main span.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) announced the beginning of construction activity on the replacement of the U.S. Route 3 (River Road) bridge over the F.E. Everett Turnpike in Bedford. This design-build project consists of the design and construction of a new bridge just north of the existing U.S. 3 bridge over the Everett Turnpike, with a new roadway approach that will tie in at the Target store entrance to the northwest and 500 ft. beyond Hawthorne Drive to the southeast. Initial work involves tree clearing and ledge removal operations. The construction will progress with the construction of the new bridge and approach road work through 2012. Traffic should be switched over to the new bridge in late fall of 2012, with final slope work, removal of the existing bridge, and final paving completed by June 25, 2013. E.D. Swett, of Concord, N.H., is the contractor for the $11.5 million “best value” contract. Louis Berger Group Inc., which has an office in Manchester, N.H., is designing the bridge.

A&D Equipment Dealer of New Haven, Conn., recently came on board as a dealer of MB America Inc.
A&D Equipement Dealer of New Haven, Conn., (A&D) recently came on board as a dealer of MB America Inc. MB was first worldwide to produce a line of jaw-crushing attachments for excavators. In 2010, MB opened U.S. offices (in Reno, Nev.) and began introducing the equipment in America. A&D Equipment Dealer is a division of Lafata & Sons Inc. The LaFata name has been part of the Connecticut business world since the 1950’s, with business ventrues involving commerical and residential lansdcaping. Both A&D and LaFata & Son’s service area is well established along the Connecticut shoreline and numerous town/cities inland. In 1976, Salvatore Lafata added excavating into his company’s capabilities. During the early 1980’s, Salvatore’s son Anthony expanded commercial production and added recycling. To increase profits, Anthony started serious consideration of an MB crushing attachment. By 2006, a BF70 joined the LaFata equipment fleet. Now,
they have everything needed to handle a full range of projects — simple residential to complex commercial. The MB crusher also works in tight, tough terrain, in all kinds of weather. LaFata emphasized, “many companies just have a ‘get in and out fast’ attitude. At the end of the day it’s not only about a quality job, done in timely manner. I also care about what’s left on the table for my company. Now, with the BF70, everything is onsite. I can crush and recycle right on the spot. Projects move more efficiently, so we see better profits.” In addition to the BF70 enhancing job site efficiency, LaFate is very pleased with the savings on fuel costs. “With the price of fuel and the cost of dumping it is harder to be competitive. The BF70 gives me back that edge.” LaFata will be offering all four models of the crusher and three screeners. He is willing to discuss rental terms for combinations of excavators and MB products for long or short term.
