In the few years since Bradd Read has gone into business for himself, he has already seen how valuable a lifetime of construction experience can be. Read and his wife Tracey founded their companies, New England Helical & Excavation Inc. (NEHE) and NEHE Waterproofing Sales & Service, in his native Seekonk, Mass., January 2011. However, Reed had been in the business much longer than that. He learned how to operate heavy machinery by age 10. During his teenage years, he
could run anything contractors asked. “This is the only life I have known. I started with the first company when they were starting up. I was friends with the sons [of the owner] and we all were 10 years old, so all we did — after school, weekends and vacations –—was work. We all learned to operate in the backyard with some old equipment,” said Read. The first company that Read worked for, he moved his way up from laborer to estimator and project manager. Unless you are standing right next to them, you may miss out on the work performed by the crew from Enterprise Trenchless Technologies (ETTI) — and that’s precisely the point. The Lisbon Falls, Maine, company that was recently awarded the 2013 Equipment World Magazine Contractor of the Year award specializes in “HDD,” or horizontal directional drilling, a construction method that allows a drill to be steered and tracked from the surface, without the need to dig
a trench or disrupt the surface. HDD can be done under rivers, lakes or inlets; parking lots, roads or bridges, and of course, under buildings and houses as well. Besides HDD, ETTI also offers open trench construction, poly fusion services, vacuum excavation and geothermal installation. Founded in 1995, ETTI has completed more than 3,000 see ETTI page 6

All Star Succeeds With COR Equipment, Rubble Master You could call it a light bulb moment. Matt Forte and T.J. Koester realized their company, All Star Paving and Sealing, was paying to haul asphalt and concrete from some job sites and purchasing it for others. The business partners realized they needed to start recycling the asphalt and concrete they were hauling out of their job sites. “It was really kind of a no brainer for us; we were paying money to take these materials to area recycling plants. At the same time we were purchasing road base materials from local aggregate producers or other recyclers,” said Forte. “If we can bring torn up asphalt and concrete to our own facility, process it and re-use those same materials as a road base, saving us from buying the road base elsewhere, the savings are significant. “As an added bonus we have started accepting asphalt and concrete from other contractors who need to get rid of it, and we have the option of selling road base materials if we produce more than we can use on our own,” Forte added. To achieve this goal All Star Paving purchased a Rubble Master portable recycler, which it is using to process asphalt and concrete and create ¾-in. processed road base material. On top of all of the expected benefits, the material that they are making is a better quality material than they had access to in the past, according to Forte and Koester. It also has been a huge time and fuel saver for All Star Paving as they are no longer sending their trucks to another site, waiting to get loaded and then trucking the materials back to their site. The Rubble Master impact crusher, which was purchased from COR Equipment, Stamford, Conn., has a double deck

screen. Oversized material from the first pass through the crusher is separated and conveyed back to the crusher one more time. This eliminates the need of having to run the material through a cone crusher.

“We worked with D.J. Cavaliere at COR Equipment to make this purchase,” Forte said. “COR Equipment is owned by the Cavaliere family, who is also in the paving business. They understand our needs because they are in the same business that we are. I’ve known D.J. Cavaliere for a long time and have enough respect for his opinion that when he told us about Rubble Master we had to give it serious consideration. We rented the machine three times before making the decision to buy. Today the Rubble Master gives us the capability of processing up to 300 yards of material each day. “The service that we have received from COR Equipment has been excellent. Granted, they are not located very far away, and the Rubble Master rarely gives us issues, but when we need help the staff at COR tries to troubleshoot the issue over the telephone and if that does not work they are at our facility in no time.” All Star Paving and Sealing Founded in 1999 when Forte and Koester, who each have 20 years of experience in the paving and services business, joined forces, All Star Paving and Sealing’s services include asphalt paving, sealcoating, patching, curbing, crack repair, and oil and stone work. Forte handles all of the consulting and estimating while Koester manages the work force. The company’s masonry services include Belgium block, granite curbing, pavers, concrete curbing, flagstone, brick pavers and stone wall construction. It also offers excavation services, which include drainage, utility work, site clearing and grading. The business model has been simple. Give the client the highest quality product with a level of service that exceeds anyone else in the industry, according to Forte. All Star Paving and Sealing’s market area is southeastern Connecticut and its customer base is working on commercial and residential clientele. projects, with over 630,000 ft. (192,024 m) of pipe installed. According to president Scott Kelly, its work is broken into two specific areas — contract and gas work. On the gas side, ETTI holds the master contract to install all main line and service lines for Maine Natural Gas, a project that allows the company to combine its trenchless services with the work of skilled trenching crews. ETTI also does contract work for other companies, using the HDD technology that it has pioneered in the region to allow its customers to minimize the cost and aggravation of closing down roads, or having to work through other surface barriers such as bridges and waterways in order to complete their construction work. Although its unique drilling technology plays a big role in the success of ETTI, that alone is not enough to explain its outstanding growth. What else contributes to make ETTI such a shining example of business achievement? Attitude and vision have a lot to do with it. “We’ve heard that there was a recession out there, but so far we have refused to participate,” said Kelly, who turned more serious to explain how the company has embraced technology, not for technology’s sake, but when and if it makes sense. But Kelly insists on giving his people the larger portion of the credit, and he specifically mentions their skills — not necessarily their technical skills, though, since he believes that “soft” skills such as communication, listening, work ethics and desire to learn, are at the bedrock of the company’s reputation. Kelly has earned the right to that opinion. His management philosophy emphasizes the importance of starting with the person. “We hire good local people with strong work habits and then we train them.” ETTI has developed an ambitious program that includes drilling, drilling mud, geology and utility locating modules, as well as some designed for team building. Treating each employee as an individual person and as a valuable team

member; listening, supporting and allowing his people to buy into his vision, is a concept that may sound great but is a lot of work to implement. Kelly thinks it’s worthwhile, however. How has receiving the 2013 Equipment World Magazine Contractor of the Year award affected ETTI? “Not a day goes by without someone in town, or in the industry, mentioning it,” said Kelly, who makes it clear that he believes the award goes to everyone in the company — “we all won it together” — and that he was very impressed by the level of the other contestants and the intensity of the scrutiny they all underwent. “We needed to provide names of 20 companies that we have had as customers over a long period of time; they reviewed our safety
record, and interviewed us for two and a half hours,” said the ETTI president, who recounts being at Las Vegas with the other finalists and forging relationships with several other company owners with similar business philosophy and vision. “We made a commitment to get together on a regular basis, and there’s even a possibility that we are joined by representatives from Equipment World, which was the sponsor of the contest.” Scott Kelly, president of ETTI, accepts the Contractor of the Year award.
(This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) see ETTI page 12
ETTI relies on traditional earthmoving equipment for site clean-up as well as in those cases where traditional open surface construction is the best method for the job.

Read Takes Pride in Royal Crest Apartment Project NEHE from page 1
years, that company had moved from using shovels for excavation to projects with million dollar budgets. Observing this type of growth inspired Read to start his own company. “I started out by doing water and sewer service, then expanded to helical piers. It was rough finding work in this economy. Then, came a project that involved waterproofing existing buildings. This project expanded the company. That’s when the waterproofing side came in. We became a distributor for EPRO waterproofing products,” said Read. With only four employees, the family owned-company can solve nearly any client’s geotechnical issues for any project. NEHE’s service area includes all of New England, upstate New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. NEHE offers many services — both residential and commercial. They include waterproofing, damp proofing, crack repair, sealing, drainage and much more. A large part of the operation includes installing Helical Anchors Inc. products for customers. NEHE’s helical services include the installation of mini push piers, underpinning, demolition, site work and wind turbine foundations. According to Read, using helical piers reduces project costs on marine projects that have unsuitable material in the building pad. Read took special pride in his biggest project to date. At the Royal Crest Apartment complex, NEHE exposed the footing of all 11 structures, and repaired and prepped the
foundation walls to accept the new waterproofing. Ecoline-R, with a dimple board made by EPRO, was installed along with a sub-drain and trunk line to accept the downspouts. NEHE completed the project on time with minimal disturbance to the residents. Much of Read’s success may not have been possible without the help and dedication of his family. He started his company during a challenging time two years ago, but wife Tracey and his children continue to help and inspire him. “It’s been tough through this economy, but with family behind you, you find a way. I would like to turn the company over to my son and daughter when they get older. I’m teaching my son how to do some of the things I learned to do as a child, right now.” said Read. Read thinks about what other profession he would in order to have all the same vacations as his kids, but is not sure what he would go into. Driving down the road and just looking at all the houses, buildings and roads he has done over the years is the reward that has kept him in the business for so many years. Mass. Senate Votes to Approve Road, Bridge Project Funds BOSTON (AP) The state Senate has approved a bill that would provide $300 million to cities and towns for road and bridge projects, a $100 million increase over last year. Municipal officials have been pressing lawmakers to approve the so-called Chapter 90 funds as the spring construction season begins. The measure passed May 2 also has been approved by the House but needs a final vote in both chambers before going to Gov. Deval Patrick’s desk. Senate Republican Leader Bruce Tarr said he’s concerned that the funding for cities and towns could yet fall victim to disagreements between the governor and lawmakers over the amount of new revenue contained in a broader transportation finance plan. That bill, calling for $500 million in new taxes, is currently being negotiated by a House-Senate conference committee.

Kelly Believes Contractor Award Goes to All Employees ETTI from page 6
ETTI has capitalized on the building of natural gas distribution infrastructure throughout the state of Maine.
Still not knowing who the winner would be, the 12 finalists for Equipment World magazine’s Contractor of the Year Award were flown into Las Vegas for the announcement.
The ability to drill under structures like roads and bridges, and even under water, is a key advantage of horizontal directional drilling technology. Here, two ETTI employees follow the underwater path of the drill.
Enterprise Trenchless Technologies Inc. — ETTI — specializes in horizontal directional drilling, or HDD, a construction method that allows a drill to be steered and tracked from the surface without disrupting the surface.
