Across New England pumpkin growers have been readying their entries for Pumpkin Palooza and the Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off at Frerichs Farm in Warren, R.I. Six months of nurturing fruit weighing hundreds of pounds and devising ways to transport these giants unharmed to the contests is in itself almost a full-time job. Grown from April into October, the pumpkins must be babysat for hours each day. One imperfection or rot spot and they are disqualified from competition. The Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off at Frerichs Farm is about to celebrate its 11th anniversary, but the event was originally started some years before that in Smithfield, R.I., by John Castalucci, good friends of Frerichs Farm owner Dave Frerichs. “He started growing the first giant pumpkins on his farm,” said Frerichs. “I said to him, ‘I want to lift those giants with a crane here and then drop them filled with candy. And he said to growers use all kind of lifting devices, including large crane me, What? You want me to grow these things for The devices to lift the pumpkins out of their patches and up and over five months, raise them and then smash them on their homes to get them into the trailers. the ground?’ He thought I was crazy. Then, he thought about it and said okay. “When he saw how we carried out the idea, he said, ‘Wow! You really do a nice job.’ He only had six acres in Smithfield. We have 13 acres here, more equipment, more room, bigger crowds.” Frerichs is an internationally registered weigh site and some of the winners at the Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off have been registered in the Guinness Book of World Records. Other entrants at Frerichs have named it Number One nationally for collective giants. There are thousands of dollars to be won in this competition and, of course, bragging rights. Two decades ago, 600 pounds was considered a champ, have actually invented a cinch method. Construction Equipment Called Into Play on Contest Day PUMPKINS from page 1

Tripod, Hoists, Ropes Pumpkin growers from all over the country share tips and secrets, but Frerichs said, “It’s Rhode Island genetics that are growing these giant pumpkins all over the country. It’s the seeds from our giants that everyone wants. The circle keeps getting bigger, along with the pumpkins. “Competitors devise their own tall tripod with pipes to move them,” said Frerichs. “They have actually invented a

cinch method. There is a ring on top, with multiple straps sewn on. The ropes go through the straps. “Then they tie a big ring around the pumpkin and put chains around it. They raise the pumpkin up high, back a vehicle underneath it and lower it. It’s not for the faint of heart when they move these massive things,” added Frerichs. “This is serious lifting power,” he continued. “The lifting devices can’t be flimsy. Some folks use a forklift to lift the pumpkins on to palates because they’re digging up 1,600-pound pumpkins. We just had a 2,000-pound pumpkin but it had a little defect on it and it blew. It would have set a world record.”

‘Unbelievable Support’ From Industry for Irene Cleanup On Aug. 28, Hurricane Irene battered the East Coast and caused the largest electricity outage in more than 25 years. Following the storm, utility companies and contractors were dispatched to begin the challenging task of cleaning up and restoring power to local businesses and homes. Responsible for at least 40 fatalities as it traveled from the Caribbean through New England, the natural disaster caused an estimated $7 billion in damages, according to Bloomberg. Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P), a Hartfordbased utility company that serves 1.2 million customers in 149 cities, said employees, contractors and distributors worked through the Labor Day weekend to clean up after the powerful storm. Belknap Landscape Company Transforms Stewart Park By Dale Squires SPECIAL TO CEG

Stewart Park’s benches, trash receptacles, water fountain and the fencing along the river were all in need of repair or replacement. Invasive plantings thrived throughout the Laconia, N.H., park, and the streetlights had not worked for years. Belknap Landscape Company Inc. (BLC) submitted and won a sealed bid for the Stewart Park restoration, winning the bid based on a comprehensive design supplied by its inhouse landscape design team, full site work and construction capabilities. Belknap is a Lakes Regions, N.H., landscape design-build firm that provides land care services to area residential, commercial and municipal clients throughout all four seasons. Specializing in solving problems in New Hampshire landscapes, the company maintains a focus on waterfront properties, be they residential, commercial or municipal. The project was funded through tax increment financing (TIF). Tax revenues that accrue from the increase in assessed value generated by the city’s investment in new construction or renovation of area properties allows Laconia to identify TIF districts. Laconia then applies a portion of those future revenues to fund public improvements within it, like Belknap Landscape’s renovation of Stewart Park. Rebuilt underground utilities and water supplies provide the safety of new lighting and protect the city’s plants and turf from drought. New 8-ft. (2.4 m) wide, multi-use walkways, comfortable, strategically placed seating, planting beds full of native plant selections, restored turf and pruned trees create a mid-town oasis for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. BLC Owner Hayden McLaughlin said, “We thoroughly enjoyed working with the parks and recreation department on the project, finding the The ribbon cutting ceremony took place June 9. Stewart Park has undergone its own ‘Extreme Makeover’.” Stewart Park, flanked by Union Avenue and the Winnipesaukee River was once the site of stores and factories, followed by hosiery mills, according to local historian Mary Rose Boswell (a member of the State Historical Resources Council). The park was dedicated in 1973 and named after Paul Stewart, who chaired the Laconia Housing and Redevelopment Authority, The park’s benches, trash receptacles, water fountain, the fencing along the which controls the city’s Urban Renewal proj- river were all in need of repair or replacement. The Riverwalk, a solid black line on the map, is a 1-mi. walk. A shorter route, the dotted line, bottom right on the map, is a .3mi. walk from City Hall and the Historic Belknap Mill around — or through — Stewart Park and over the footbridge, back to the Mill. Many properties along the way are listed on the National Historic Register.

Self-Leveling Shoes

Braced Side Panels

Make life easier for the operator. Because the shoes level themselves, he can simply ‘drop and go’ without worrying about keeping the box exactly level. This prevents premature wearing of the shoe. They also absorb impacts much more easily than fixed shoes.

A plow that is not adequately braced will quickly fail when driven into a snowbank or curb. The 400 stands up to those inevitable hits.

Sectional Steel Trip Edge The cutting blade trips in 2’ independent sections, which keeps more of the blade in contact with the snow if an obstacle is hit.

Torsion Spring Trip Mechanism Rugged torsion springs on the STE model provide exceptional stiffness for attacking even hard-packed snow while riding back fully over solid obstacles.

High Density Rubber Rubber Edge models feature blades crafted from the toughest compound in the industry.

Center Arch Span Placed on Lake Champlain Bridge CROWN POINT, N.Y. (AP) The center arch span for the new Lake Champlain Bridge arrived by barge Aug. 26 and was being hoisted into place, another step in relinking New York and Vermont over the lake’s southern end. The 402-ft. (122.5 m), 1.8 million-lb. (816,466 kg) arch began its journey on two barges around 6 a.m. Aug. 26 from its construction site at a marina in Port Henry on the lake’s western shore. Two tug boats pushed the barges 2 mi. (3.2 km) across the lake and delivered the arch to the bridge site by 8 a.m. Crews then positioned the arch so it could be lifted into place using pairs of cable hoists mounted on each end of the uncompleted bridge. William Reynolds, spokesman of the New York state Department of Transportation, said the lifting started early afternoon and was expected to take four to six hours to complete. The arch is the last major section of the 2,100-ft. (640 m) long bridge to be installed. “The arch will be secured into place by the end of today,” Reynolds said Aug. 26 by phone from the bridge construction site, 100 mi. (161 km) north of Albany. DOT officials had originally said the new $70 million bridge would be open by early October, but they’ve since backed off on an opening date after spring flooding along the Lake Champlain shoreline caused construction delays. Reynolds said the bridge will definitely be open by the end of this year, most likely sometime in the fall. About 250 people gathered along the lakeshore at the Crown Point State Historic Site in sunny, 70-degree weather to watch the eight-story-tall arch make its way slowly across the lake to the southern narrows separating New York and Vermont. The original bridge linking Crown Point and Addison, Vt., was demolished in December

2009 after inspectors deemed the 80-yearold span unsafe. The new bridge will connect the same two communities. Lisa Cloutier, owner of a restaurant just off the Vermont end of the bridge, has managed to keep her place open despite the span’s closure and all the construction activity outside her front door. The arch’s arrival filled her Bridge Restaurant with customers, preventing her from getting outside to get a look at all the fuss. “Right now, I’m going nuts in my kitchen, but I’m pretty happy,” she told The Associated Press over the phone. “I haven’t seen the arch because I haven’t been able to get past my kitchen, but that’s good.” The arch arrived at the bridge site on the 82nd anniversary of the original bridge’s opening. Originally a toll bridge owned and operated by the Lake Champlain Bridge Commission, the tolls were removed in September 1987 when the commission was abolished and ownership was transferred to the two states, with New York in charge of maintaining the span. Two decades later, New York and Vermont officials began discussing plans to either refurbish the span or replace it. The decision was made for them when inspections of the bridge’s concrete piers revealed serious erosion and the span was closed for good on Oct. 16, 2009. The closure was felt immediately on both sides of the bridge, which was used by about 3,500 vehicles a day. People commuting to jobs had to take detours of up to 100 miles, while restaurants and retail stores saw an immediate drop in business. A controlled explosive demolition brought down the 80year-old span crashing into the lake amid a snow storm on Dec. 28, 2009. A free ferry service started at the site Feb. 1, 2010, helped bring back some of the traffic to local communities.
