F&W Equipment Corp. Builds Success for 73-Plus Years Having ‘Fun at Work’ By Jay Adams CEG CORRESPONDENT

F&W Equipment Corp. is a highlyregarded firm that has served the Connecticut market since 1939. F&W, or Fun at Work Since 1939, has been as pliable with the changing demands of its eight decades of operation as the oven-hot iron the company shaped and welded when it first opened its doors on the eve of World War II. Founder Harold O. Funk originally opened F&W Welding Service and saw demand surge during the Great War, when iron and steel were needed for multiple military and stateside reasons. During the war, Funk rose to the occasion, working with iconic Electric Boat to create innovative, life-saving submarine technology. After the war, F&W changed gears and began providing equipment and equipment service for the surge in post-war construction. This became a popular addition to the already established repair work the company was known for. In 1955, F&W Equipment Corp. moved from its historic New Haven, Conn., location in Wooster Square to a new home in Orange, Conn. In 1965, the firm moved to its current location at 164 Boston Post Road. For three generations, F&W Equipment Corp. has remained a family-owned business committed to delivering the best in equipment sales, rentals, parts and service. Harold’s son Roger came into the business in 1963 with a metallurgical engineering degree. Roger understood the metal fabrication aspect of the business in depth, but embraced and drove the necessary changes to becoming a construction equipment dealer. For five decades, he has achieved many successes and attained many awards. He has been awarded numerous distinctions from the Orange Chamber of Commerce, West Haven Rotary and also from the Orange Business and Development for his volunteer work and a see F&W page 4

(L-R): Roger, Jim and Steve Funk represent the second and third generation of family ownership and operation at F&W Equipment Corp.

One of the most recent adjustments in the 73-year-old company’s business plan was to introduce a brand makeover that included a new logo.

ITL Auctioneering Holds Successful Sale in Taunton, Mass. Visitors arrived at ITL Auctioneers and Liquidators in Taunton, Mass,. as early as 8 a.m.

TL Auctioneering and Liquidations held another successful sale on Sept. 15. Buyers sorted through an array of large and small trucks, cars, RVs and boats. Heavy iron on the block included excavators, loaders and screeners. Smaller iron, such as tractors and air compressors, some antique and fully restored, also were up for grabs. Co-owner Justin Lyerla, who runs ITL with his father John Lyerla Sr., brother John Jr. and mother, Maryanne, said, “We have more than 220 lots today on the 2.2 acres here. This was an old Chevy dealership.” Buyers came from all over Massachusetts — Taunton, Dighton, North Dighton, Rehoboth, Somerset, Seekonk, Mansfield, Walpole, Brockton, Raynham, and even as far as ITL co-owner Justin Lyerla (C) entertains contractors Sagamore Beach. ITL specializes in auctioneering, sales and liquidation. as they registered for the auction. The company has assisted small businesses and big corporations with marketing strategies to maximize their profits when liquidating merchandise, and found gems to sell to the “little guy,” as well. The family has a long history in sales, specifically equipment sales, with more than 50 years of combined experience in marketing. ITL and the Lyerla family believe that all relationships are important, whether selling one item or a whole warehouse of inventory. The family also recognizes the future of their business. “On November 3, we are having a straight, virtual

auction,” said Lyerla. “We are selling online only. There is quite a logistical difference, when you go online.” ITL does business all over New England, into Maine and is now expanding into New York. “We are building our clientele now,” he added. “We are networking with equipment people on different projects, and new auctions, networking with many new people.” see ITL page 8

DURHAM, N.H. (AP) A $750,000 National Science Foundation grant will help University of New Hampshire researchers examine how climate affects road and bridge construction. Road and bridge engineers look to climate data when designing and constructing projects, but researchers say data representing the changing nature of climate has largely eluded them, in part because of its complexity. “The climate change community and the infrastructure engineers are not yet talking,” said Jennifer Jacobs, principal researcher. “They’re not at the same meetings, they’re not in the same departments at universities.” Jo Daniel, a researcher and associate professor of civil engineering at UNH, said if climate is changing, using weather data from 20 years ago is not going to represent what the road will experience in the next 20

years. The four-year grant will fund the creation of the Infrastructure and Climate Network, or ICNet, to support the integration of climate science and engineering research. Representatives from state departments of transportation and practicing engineers will also be involved. The goal is create workshops using an “Anytown Northeast” case study on the relationship of climate change to building roads and bridges. “Linking knowledge to action is not automatic, but it’s critical,” said Jack Kartez, a researcher and professor of community planning and development at the University of Southern Maine’s Muskie School of Public Service. The researchers hope that their New England-based collaborative could be expanded elsewhere.
