Allied Recycling Finds Success With Help From Liebherr and Lorusso Edward Jamieson has been in the scrap industry for decades. When the opportunity arose in 2003 to take over the site of a former demolition and recycling center in Walpole, Mass., Jamieson jumped at the opportunity. The company started off like so many other companies, as a very small, family-owned entity, doing everything they could to generate scrap metals. In 2010, Michael Sciaba joined the Allied Recycling team and has been key in handling the company’s daily business operations. In the extremely competitive industry, Allied has grown more than 250 percent over the last 4 years by making customer service the absolute priority. see AllIEd page 4

Due to the extensive volume of scrap metal processed, Allied needs strong, reliable, fuel efficient machinery to process the material. It currently uses Liebherr wheel loaders, track excavators and wheeled material handlers purchased from Lorusso Heavy Equipment. “After buying our first Liebherr from Gerry Carney at Lorusso Heavy Equipment, there was no question about what type of equipment to purchase for our daily business operations. Liebherr makes an outstanding product. They are cost effective and dependable. Lorusso Heavy Equipment provides excellent customer service,” said Sciaba. Mayor Calls for Housing Boom in Boston; Asks for $21B in Public, Private Work By Philip Marcelo ASSOCIATED PRESS

BOSTON (AP) Boston Mayor Martin Walsh released a housing plan on Oct. 9 calling for $21 billion in public and private construction to meet the city’s housing needs over the next two decades. Walsh said the city needs to build 53,000 units of housing to accommodate a surging population and to prevent low- and middle-income residents from being priced out of the city. That would bring Boston’s total housing units to 317,976, a roughly 20 percent increase from the 264,908 units the city had in 2010, according to Walsh’s report. “Boston is growing, and I am committed to making sure that the prosperity Boston is enjoying reaches every neighborhood and every Boston resident,” Walsh said in a statement. “Any person who wants to contribute to

making Boston better should be able to live and succeed here — regardless of their income level, race, or physical ability.” Boston’s population has been recovering in recent years from decades of steady declines. U.S. Census Bureau data suggests Boston is gaining population twice as fast as the rest of the state, according to Walsh’s report. The capital city is expected to grow from about 650,000 residents to more than 700,000 by 2030, a level Boston has not seen since the late 1950s, when families across the country decamped from cities to new suburbs. With young, highly skilled workers increasingly being drawn to Boston’s science and technology sectors, the report says the city needs to build 44,000 housing units for working-age adults. Another 5,000 units are needed for senior citizens, and 4,000 are needed to help ease housing demand and temper soaring housing prices, the

report says. Walsh’s report suggests the city’s many colleges and universities play a key role in addressing Boston’s housing needs. He wants colleges to create 16,000 new dorm beds for undergraduate students, reducing by about 50 percent the number of those students living off campus and freeing up thousands of apartments for working adults. The move also would prevent students from living in substandard rental units that the city has been trying to crack down on. Walsh also wants to loosen city zoning restrictions, provide incentives for building taller buildings, encourage developers to build around public transportation hubs and increase city spending on affordable housing from $31 million a year to $51 million. Vt.’s PC Construction Takes Its Expertise Nationwide With more than 55 years of experience in the construction industry, it’s no surprise that PC Construction has taken not only Vermont but also the eastern United States by storm. The business proudly calls South Burlington, Vt., home with regional corporate offices in North Carolina and Maine. The company has come a long way from the small masonry construction company started by the Pizzagalli family in 1958. PC Construction undertakes projects across the Eastern seaboard and as far west as California. The Yellow River Water Reclamation Facility in Georgia, Hotel Vermont in Vermont and the Molnlycke Health Center in Brunswick, Maine, is a testament to their expertise. Time for a Change As director of IT, Randy K. Lessor’s world was filled with challenges typically faced by most construction companies. IT needed to run a corporate data center in Vermont, which hosted server and storage infrastructure with all departmental and construction project shares, a VPN for remote access and backup. Since projects were spread across the country, each project required its own collaboration infrastructure, which was done by spinning up an old FTP server and creating individual folder structures dedicated to each project. This was cumbersome and time consuming for IT because each FTP site took hours to set up. In addition, all access to employees and partners who needed files ultimately went through IT, making the IT team a bottleneck for productivity needs in the field. With so many projects and people involved in the collaboration process, especially external partners, security was a major concern. PC Construction was setting up all the permissioning for the FTP servers, and with users constantly being added and removed from projects, there was always a chance that someone gained access to a restricted file. Even after all of the IT setup, if power was lost at the data center, there was no access to data until power was restored. Wasted time, security concerns and unreliable access from the field forced IT to constantly look for ways to cut down on costs and maintenance overhead, while making the field more self-sufficient and productive.

Finding the Right Solution Lessor first tried popular consumer solutions such as Dropbox and Box. They scored high on ease of use but left Lessor still concerned about security and access permissions. With so many partners sharing files, finegrained access to specific projects and an integration with Active Directory (AD) was critical. The organization also needed a fallback plan for times when the cloud might be inaccessible due to connectivity constraints or issues. In 2012, Lessor decided to look at Egnyte for the company’s enterprise file services platform. After a discussion with one of his developers and conducting research, PC Construction decided to move forward with implementing Egnyte as the core of the organization’s file management and its corporate file server. All departmental file shares have been migrated into Egnyte from the data center. For example, Egnyte enables marketing and finance data to be accessible using any device from any location, yet IT can still enforce the same strict level infrastructure of access permissions that existed on the traditional file server. Lessor and his team also deployed Egnyte Storage Sync in the data center to maintain a local copy of files on premises and allow fast access. This is now the company’s fall-back plan when and if the Internet goes down. Egnyte has become the hub for all projectbased files and collaboration, replacing the FTP setup. The IT department values the integration because it allows users, including employees, contractors and vendors, to access the information and make changes without bottlenecking the IT department with questions. IT also can provision a standard folder hierarchy structure every time a potential job goes from an active bid to an active project. The folders can be accessed by project staff from any device and location — in the office, at the job site or on the road. The folders are set up with appropriate permissions so that project and department employees can invite external parties to collaborate very quickly with specific subfolders and not the entire data set. see PC page 12

With PC Construction Business Booming, IT Looks for Better Ways to Collaborate PC from page 10

As Lessor said, “It used to take hours to provision an FTP site and IT used to be the bottleneck. Now we have a project structure up in minutes and users can initiate collaboration immediately with partners without compromising security.” Since PC Construction teams often find themselves working with a number of third parties to collaborate on projects, Lessor didn’t want to waste time manually inputting every employee and every client, in addition to their permissions. PC Construction’s Active Directory is integrated with Egnyte, which allows users to access Egnyte with one set of credentials. If a user is no longer tied to a project or their AD credentials are disabled, they instantly lose access to all files. Each project folder has unique permissions that users set up so they can decide what information a particular person views. These permissions allow

for contractors, sub-contractors, vendors and PC Construction’s teams to start collaborating within minutes, saving valuable time on projects, such as Hotel Vermont and The University of Vermont’s George D. Aiken Center. This control makes for painless collaboration combined with top-notch security, which is a number one priority. In addition to being able to easily access files in the field and strong security permissioning, Lessor wanted a solution that was simple to use. It was important that not only the company’s employees could understand the software but their clients and partners could as well. With a new and improved user interface, Egnyte makes syncing, sharing and editing files a breeze for even the most novice computer user. In fact, PC Construction received calls from its customers and partners thanking them for switching to Egnyte. Lessor said: “I started out looking for a tool to improve collaboration on

projects. Other tools would have allowed me to share files on a few projects but still left me concerned about security. With Egnyte, I now have a single platform that has become our file server, addressing departmental and project needs inside and outside the company. All our files across the entire company run through Egnyte. Best of all I have users enjoying and looking forward to using Egnyte, which speaks for the ease of use.” Egnyte has helped PC Construction dramatically reduce IT operational costs and reduce the time it takes to provision a project by more than 90 percent. With Egnyte as the infrastructural backbone of PC Construction, the company saves time, money, and puts company talent to the best use. For more information, call 877/7346983 or visit www.egnyte.com. Woodco Machinery, based in Woburn, Mass., joined the SDLG dealer network in September. It will sell the brand’s complete lineup of wheel loaders for the region, as well as provide product support and service. Woodco will provide SDLG wheel loaders and support to eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The company stocks a wide range of construction equipment and has a team of well-trained sales and serviceman to back its offerings. The addition of Woodco will strengthen SDLG’s presence in the region and give customers the support that only comes from an experienced dealership, according to the company. Bob Benard, president of Woodco, said that adding SDLG wheel loaders to the dealership’s lineup would enable the company to offer good

quality, brand-new machines to customers that typically would have purchased a used machine. “There’s a great market we can serve with SDLG wheel loaders,” Bernard said. “Customers that will only use their machines for seasonal work, such as snow removal or bark mulching, don’t need the features of a premium, more expensive machine. Other customers only need a secondary machine that won’t be running for many hours each week. In the past, these customers purchased used machines, but with our addition of SDLG wheel loaders, we can now offer them a new, well-made machine that is fully backed by a warranty and Woodco’s product and service support.” Woodco will sell the SDLG LG938L, a 2.5 cu. yd. (1.9 cu m) capacity wheel loader; the LG948L, a 3.0 cu. yd. (2.2 cu m) capacity wheel loader; the LG959, 4.0 cu. yd. (3 cu m) capacity wheel loader; and the

LG958L, which has the same basic specs as the LG959, but with dry disc brakes rather than wet disc. All four loaders are backed by a 12-month, 1,500-hour warranty. Al Quinn, director of SDLG North America, said the addition of Woodco brings a trusted dealer to SDLG’s efforts in the northeast United States that shows great knowledge of the product and its potential customers. “Part of the strategy in rolling out SDLG across North America is to partner with dealerships that are equipped to offer great service and support to their customers,” Quinn said. “Woodco really knows the customers and industries in its region and can provide them with valuable expertise. Woodco has an outstanding reputation and we couldn’t ask for a better partner in Massachusetts.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Bob Benard, president of Woodco Machinery, celeWeb site at www.constructionequip- brates the addition of SDLG wheel loaders to the commentguide.com.) pany’s offerings.
