Multi-Generational Involvement Helps Build Cape Cod Contractor’s Business
Justin Lyerla (508) 824-3262
All cranes learn how to build from their instincts in the nest. Jason A. Souza learned how to build from his grandfather’s crane — the heavy iron version, that is, not the long-legged bird. Souza, owner of American Excavating Contractors Inc., on Cape Cod, learned about the construction of handmade stone walls and the powerful machinery needed to move and pile large stones from his mentor and grandfather George Rapoza, while still a fledgling, just out of the nest, himself. The Souza’s three-yearRapoza had established a old, Wyatt, helps Dad successful crane company, wash the big trucks when Rapoza’s Crane Service, Dad comes home, and has East Falmouth, Mass. In helped them land jobs. later years, however, his business waned, and Rapoza started Azopar Corp., a related excavation business, in the early 1980s. As a child, Souza would go to work job sites with his grandfather and then, as a fascinated teenager, would work on-site with him as a laborer. He never ran the cranes, but would move them, while greasing and loading trucks. His grandfather taught him the foundation of excavation and building and was a very positive role model in his life. Learning Under ‘Rip Rap’ According to Souza, George Rapoza, AKA “Rip Rap” was a rock star of a different sort. His stage usually consisted of heavy wooden mats that the cranes parked on for stability while working on or around the beach. He was well-known for building jetties and sea walls from Provincetown, Mass., to the Jersey Shore. see cAPE coD page 8

A giant mural painted on the side of one of its buildings celebrates the 100th year of Berger Recycling in Pawtucket, R.I. The artwork, 100-ft. long and 15-ft. high, highlights local landmarks along with the people, processes and equipment that have made the family-owned business so successful. Among the items pictured in the mural is a Bobcat skidsteer loader, a fixture on site for almost half the time the company has been in business. “Bobcat equipment has been important to us, so it’s only fitting that we include one of the loaders in the artwork that illustrates our history,” said Adam Sinel, vice president of operations. “We don’t think any other machines would stand up to the abuse we put our loaders through. This is a very tough work environment, and for decades our Bobcat loaders have been exceptionally reliable.” As a result of the long record of dependable performance, the company currently owns six Bobcat skid-steer loaders to move materials around the 3-acre recycling center — a new M-Series S750, two S300s, two S130s and a 753, along with attachments such as an angle broom, pallet forks, industrial buckets with grapples and snow/light material buckets. Four Generations Old Today the firm is owned by Sam and Charles Sinel, grandsons of the founder, Hyman Berger. Their father, Abe, ran the business until his unexpected death in 1958. At that point, their mother Edith took over and spent about a decade in charge until her sons joined the business. Adam, son of Charles, is the fourth-generation family member to work at the company. When asked about Berger Recycling’s history with Bobcat equipment, Sam readily produced a bill of sale dated Nov. 19, 1965, when Edith purchased an M444 Bobcat loader for $3,120. see ANNIVERSARY page 16

Accessibility, Endurance Reclaim Souza’s Lost Niche CAPE COD from page 1 Stacey. Headquartered in Mashpee, Mass., the middle of Cape As Souza got older and started getting his own jobs (as a DBA), he rented his grandfather’s old equipment, much of Cod, American Excavating Co. offers a complete array of full site development: excavation, Title V septic installation, which had seen better days and was in need of repair. “By the early 80s, Grandpa’s old three-quarter-yard boulder retaining walls, demolition, drainage, landscape LIMA cranes had become obsolete and parts were hard to construction, tree removal and more (a full list is on its Web come by. Whenever possible, stone walls were constructed site). The company also performs commercial and residential services. primarily with excavators and backhoes,” he said. While the company’s home offices are in Mashpee, its But Souza would not be deterred. The pull of the crane was too strong. In 1998, at the age of 26, he started a firm small fleet of trucks and equipment is located in East Falmouth, Mass. called Above Grade Excavating. Four years later, however, he found himself in the wrong kind of hole. In 2002, Souza took on a partner because he needed to expand the business, needed someone to handle the clerical operation and he needed more funding. Unfortunately, the partnership floundered after two years, because of creative differences. Souza’s intentions were to go to court and divide the business assets amicably. But after a surprising upset in Superior Court, Souza found that once his ex-partner put up a substantial cash bond, he, and not Souza, was put in control of Above Grade Inc., during the dissolution. “All I was left with was an old Dodge pickup, some rakes, some shovels and most of the customers,” said Stone retaining wall stairs in Barnstable, Mass. Souza.
Jason Souza Jr. (L) and mechanic Billy Thames working on a sander at American Excavating Contractors’ shop.
He had always maintained solid relationships with his customers and his vendors, so he spoke to them about what had happened and, fortified by their positive input, was convinced he should regroup, stay in the industry and pursue his own company, just a few days after the dissolution of Above Grade. “I called my insurance agent and after post-dating a check out for 30 days, I was able to secure a Workers Comp and General Liability policy,” admitted Souza. “Once that was established, we hit the ground running, sunrise to sunset, seven days a week, rain or shine.” As a result, American Excavating Contractors was founded in July 2004, by Souza and his then-fiancée, now wife,
Truly a Family Affair Over the past nine years, Souza has reclaimed a niche in the local market. And, from grandfather to grandson, husband to wife, it is truly a family operation. “Yes, our family business has grown. My wife Stacey is the office manager, but will work on-site from time to time. Jason Jr. is now 17 years old and he has spent the last couple summers going to work with Dad and learning the trade,” said Souza. “Even our three-year-old, Wyatt, helps Dad wash the big trucks when Dad comes home, and has helped us land jobs.” American Excavating employs several full-time workers and uses various local sub-contractors on jobs. Services have
expanded as well as family. “We now offer septic financing, which is done through Barnstable County. We also have done some landscape construction jobs to keep the company busy in slow times,” said Souza. “We also do start-to-finish site development, which includes mulch installation, tree work, loam installation, seeding lawns, etc.” For a small company, Souza has taken on some interesting projects, in and around the ocean on challenging Cape Cod, including a 10-bedroom house in Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard, on Anthier’s Way, a neighborhood of multi-million dollar homes. “The house was 15,000-square feet,” said Souza. “We spent the entire summer of 2009 in Oak Bluffs, or traveling back and forth on the Steamship Authority [ferry shuttle system] across the Bay.” His crew also finished a large boulder retaining in Barnstable Village on Millway, across from the harbor. “We also did complete site work, including beach renourishment, in New Seabury on Squaws Lane,” he added. “First, we performed the demolition of an older house, the site work, septic installation, landscape construction and driveway installation.” Always Reachable Souza’s greatest asset, besides his hard-working wife, is his personal accessibility. “When you call me, you get me. I treat every job like it is my own property, while never forgetting that it belongs to my client,” he said. “Job sites are always left neat and orderly with roads swept and trash picked up. All clients receive daily updates via email, pictures and video walk through. Out of town clients especially appreciate this and we are happy to do this for them. Our smart phones come in handy for this.” Another asset is endurance, 24/7. This came in very handy during strenuous operations like the noted New England Blizzard of 2005. “We worked for 155 straight hours, taking only brief breaks for food and quick naps during a state of emergency for the Town of Barnstable. We did around-the-clock snow removal with a crew of four guys,” said Souza. Safety is a top priority and focus on every job site and Souza gives wife Stacey tremendous credit for her devoted partnership (even to the point of editing his answers in this story). “I credit my wife for dealing with me during these uncertain times, constructing our Web site and for supporting me and working late nights to complete last- minute proposals,” said Souza. During those “uncertain times” that every contracting company sustains, Souza said the key to his smaller company is never refusing any job, no matter its size. “Before, our main focus was heavy construction and primarily the excavation side of the business. Now, we don’t turn down any job, as long as it is within our realm of expertise. We don’t turn down a job because it is too small,” he said. “I am a universal soldier. I oversee every aspect of every job and am always available to answer client’s questions or concerns.” For more information, visit www.capecodtitle5septic.com (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) To expose the pipe, Albanese and his team rely on their LiuGong 936D, 81,500 lb. (36,968 kg), 280 hp (209 kW) excavator.
Once the I-beams are installed, the steel side panels are brought from the nearby equipment and material staging area by a LiuGong 842Z bar wheel loader equipped with a coupler and forks to complete the trench box installation.
Albanese D&S Inc. Works Night Shift on Boston Pipeline Downtown Boston may not be known as the city that never sleeps, but for the next two years, it will be giving New York a run for its money. Just last month, a two-year-long sewer and storm water pipeline project got under way in downtown Boston. All the construction work on this project will take place overnight between the hours of 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. The overnight work hours allow the construction to be completed in a manner that causes the least disruption in terms of foot and commuter traffic and delivery of water utility services to residents. Today, a single underground pipeline carries both storm water and sewage to the city’s water treatment plant. With the growth of the city over time, both the storm water and sewer feeding into the single pipeline resulted in flooding of the city’s water treatment plant during severe storms. In order to correct the problem, the Boston Water and Sewage Commission (BWSC) needed to come up with a plan to divert the storm water away from the plant since it wasn’t necessary to treat it. As a result, the BWSC developed a strategic construction plan to completely separate the storm water from the sewer line. The project that would remove the citywide combined storm water and sewer pipeline currently in place, by installing two separate pipes, one which would carry storm water directly to the bay, the other which would carry sewer to the treatment plant was then put out for bid. The 15 million dollar bid was awarded to Albanese D&S Inc. of Dracut, Mass. “We did a similar job in Hartford not too long ago,” said Giovanni Albanese, owner of Albanese D&S Inc. “We understood the scope of the work well, and what would be required to complete the job on time and on budget.” Albanese and his crew began work exposing the current pipe one block at a time. To expose

the pipe, they had to carefully penetrate and dig through the asphalt pavement, then scrape and remove the soil between the pavement and pipe. “One of the biggest challenges on this job is to avoid hitting underground utility lines while digging to access and remove the existing pipe. It’s a slow, but steady process,” said Albanese. In order to minimize any disruptions in delivery of utility services to nearby residents and area businesses throughout the construction project, temporary, above ground water lines were installed to bypass the underground flow just prior to the start of construction. Once the construction in an area is complete, the temporary lines are removed with customers being reconnected to the new lines. To expose the pipe, Albanese and his team rely on their LiuGong 936D, 81,500 lb. (36,968 kg), 280 hp (209 kW) excavator. For the more finite, compact work, they rely on their LiuGong 906C, 13,200 lb. (5,987 kg), 49 hp (36.5 kW) mini-excavator and its petite 6 ft. 3 in. by 19 ft. 4 in. (1.9 by 5.9 m) footprint. The 936D is used to remove large amounts of material utilizing its 24 ft. 1 in. (7.3 m) digging depth and 2.09 cu. yd. (1.6 cu m) bucket, the 906c for smaller scale scraping and digging. As the excavators remove the asphalt and soil, the materials are loaded into a dump truck and taken to a nearby staging yard where they are stockpiled. After exposing the current pipeline, Albanese and his crew work to install temporary trench boxes prior to laying the new pipe to keep workers safe. To install the I-beams that support the trench box walls, some up to 82 ft. (25 m) below road level, Albanese equipped his LiuGong 936D excavator with a Daedong Engineering pile driver attachment. Connecticut Announces $121M for High-Speed Rail Project MERIDEN, Conn. (AP) State and federal officials on Oct. 1 announced $121 million in federal funding for a high-speed rail project between New Haven and Springfield, Mass. The 62-mi. (100 km) project calls for service every 30 minutes during peak periods and every 60 minutes at other times. Speeds would reach up to 110 miles an hour. Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s office projects 1.26 million riders annually by 2030. “Achieving this milestone means we can complete the design and construction of new track, signal and communication systems, bridge and station infrastructure improvements between New Haven and Hartford and provide an economic boon for the region,” Malloy said. The $121 million will be combined with $174 million in state bond financing. The funding announced on Monday brings to $191 million the federal commitment to the project. In total, $365 million in state and
federal funding has been committed to the Connecticut portion of the New England rail system. Service is expected to begin in 2016, when service aboard 12 trains a day will be increased to 34, or 17 round trips. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said that although Congress must figure out how to reduce the federal debt that totals more than $16 trillion, funding for New England high-speed rail should be exempt from spending cuts because the regional rail system promotes economic development. “There’s no question that federal spending has to be restrained but this project is multi-year and multi-use and is a wise use of federal funding to support a critical transportation system that benefits the entire New England region,” he said. “It deserves priority.” Malloy, members of Connecticut’s congressional delegation and federal and state transportation officials announced the funding in Meriden.

“Since that day, we have never used another brand,” Adam said. “Other manufacturers have tried to sell us machines over the years, but just by looking at their loaders, we knew they wouldn’t hold up as good as Bobcat equipment. Just one example — the Bobcat tailgate is as rugged as they come; the others looked like they would rip off or puncture in a second. It’s just not worth it to have anything other than Bobcat loaders working in these conditions.” And when it comes to work, the machines are kept plenty busy around the recycling facility. Material, including scrap metal, waste paper, plastic, electronics, wire, textiles and batteries, are brought in six days a week, often dumped on the ground, sorted by the loaders, and then carried to the conveyor system that delivers it to the balers. The final products are bales ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 lbs. (454 to 1,360 kg). “We use the S130s to handle the lighter material such as paper,” Adam said. “Those smaller machines are fantastic. At times we use them to go into a truck box and grab containers of waste paper and loose cardboard. One of our loading docks has a very narrow turn so the S130s are valuable in navigating through that area.
“The bigger machines — the S300s and the new S750 — have the power to handle scrap metal with ease,” he continues. “They take a beating, but are extremely durable. We also use them with the angle broom and water kit to clean up, both inside and outside.” Better Visibility, Improved Uptime The M-Series S750 has more than met the expectations of the owners and operators. The sealed, pressurized cab not only keeps out dust and noise better than other machines, its forward-design cab offers a wider view of the work area. And the cab has more space for the operator to improve comfort and productivity. To maximize uptime, Bobcat M-Series loaders have hydraulic pressure-release quick couplers integrated into the loader lift arm, and a guard provides further protection. Additionally, the M-Series model has a lower rear frame that extends past the tailgate to protect the loader from damage, which is especially beneficial in harsh operating conditions such as recycling facilities. “It’s a phenomenal machine,” Adam said. “My family has seen firsthand how Bobcat machines have improved for 47 years, and the S750 certainly continues that trend.” This article was reprinted with permission from WorkSaver Magazine, Fall 2012 Issue.

LiuGong Iron Helps Keep Project Flowing Smoothly
For the more finite, compact work, they rely on their LiuGong 906C, 13,200 lb. (5,987 kg), 49 hp (36.5 kW) mini-excavator and its petite 6 ft. 3 in. by 19 ft. 4 in. (1.9 by 5.9 m) footprint. PIPELINE from page 10
the nearby equipment and material staging area by a LiuGong 842Z bar wheel loader equipped with a coupler and forks to complete the trench box installation. Once the trench is safely secured for work, crew members begin removing the existing pipe and prepping the trench for the two new sewer and storm water pipelines. After installing the new pipes, the stockpiled materials removed during the process of exposing the old pipe is reloaded into dump trucks using a LiuGong 842Z bar, 35,000 lb. (15,876 kg), 3.0 cu. yd. (2.3 cu m) wheel loader. Once loaded, the material is transported to the trench being completed to cover the new pipe and bring the base back up to street level ready for paving. “As one can imagine, working in and around the city can be fairly complex,” said Albanese. “We are working under stringent timeframes and can’t afford to get behind schedule. The demands of this job, really any job nowadays necessitate reliable equipment that can withstand the rigors of 10 hours days, while providing quick cycle times and versatility. All of the LiuGong equipment on this job has performed impeccably from day
one. We’ve had no downtime outside of scheduled maintenance intervals and have used both of the excavators and a number of LiuGong wheel loaders with various attachments to accomplish a variety of work on site.” Albanese D&S Inc. specializes in water, sewer, pipeline, communication and power line construction for publically bid projects in the states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. Established in 1991, Albanese D&S is a family owned and operated business.
