The Maine Department of Transportation has formally entered into an agreement with Cianbro Corporation of Pittsfield, Maine, for the construction of the new Sarah Mildred Long Bridge connecting Kittery, Maine and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. “This agreement represents a good bridge for a good price with a base bid construction cost of $158.5 million to be divided between the two states,” said MaineDOT Commissioner David Bernhardt. “The seacoast area will be well served for generations with this new bridge.” This will be a precast segmental concrete bridge. The

lift span will have a deck that will lift for ships and lower for the rail. It will have a higher elevation and will reduce the need to lift the deck by 68 percent, which will minimize traffic impacts. The navigational opening will be wider, allowing for much safer ship passage and will better accommodate larger ships. “This agreement marks a significant milestone in this bridge replacement project,” said Cianbro President and Chief Operating Officer Andi Vigue. “It is important to note that this value was derived by the MaineDOT and its see BrIdgE page 16

Milton CAT Holds Open House at Mass. Headquarters

The final stop on the tour, a visit to the dedicated, newly-opened Milton CAT training and development center.

According to company officials at Milton CAT, the success of a recent open house for students, their families and school representatives was a clear sign — young people need real-life choices as they make decisions regarding their careers and their future, and they appreciate the opportunity to learn more about the different paths they can take to reach their goals. Corporate Technician Recruitment and Development Manager Ron Barton reported that 152 students, many accompanied by their parents, The tour of the Milton CAT location included stops at the fuel inspection room, small engine spec shop, toured the Milford, Mass., headquarters, talked to staff members, and as well as the product solutions, hydraulics, paving, under-carriage, compact construction equipment and earthmoving stations.

got a glimpse at the range of possibilities available today to well-trained service technicians. According to Barton, there were 18 high schools, six colleges and one middle school represented. “Some visitors came from as far as Buffalo, N.Y., as well as from northern Maine,” said Barton, who added that a special guest was Massachusetts State House Representative Steven Howitt. Barton said that guests first toured Milton CAT’s earthmoving location at 100 Quarry Drive; some of the stops, including product support solutions and compact construction equipment were manned by a subject matter expert who explained details and answered the students’ questions. Next the visitors toured the power systems building, where they were met by a subject matter expert who showed them onhighway trucks, marine engines and the electric power generation side of the business. “The last stop on the facilities tour was the company’s new training center, which offers a concrete and powerful testimony to the company’s commitment to training and development,” Barton said. From there, students had the chance to operate equipment of all varieties “Needless to say, that was one of the event’s highlights, followed by the chance to meet service technicians who were on hand to talk to our young visitors and tell them more about the realities of their work.” Milton CAT sees a serious, industry-wide need for skilled workers, and this type of open house demonstrates the company’s commitment to the career path, future growth, professional training and development for technicians through see MILTON page 16

which is being reutilized in other areas of the site. Only about 25,000 cu. yd. (19,114 cu m) of outside material is being brought in to the site, which is primarily aggregate material. installed GPS system from East PBE specifically for this project. “We have been using GPS for some time to map out our construction site,” said Marc Young, site superintendent. “This technology has been very helpful to us in that once we did our layout we no longer have the need for land surveyors on the site. This has been a tremendous savings of time and expense for us, in not having the surveyors return each day to stake and layout the site.” For this project, Richards was ready to take the GPS technology to the next level. The company uploaded the map of the site directly to the bulldozers and allowed the GPS technology to actually take over the controls of the bulldozer and allow the operators to hit an exact grade with each pass of the

bulldozer. “We knew that this type of technology is extremely precise and this type of job would lend itself very well to this technology. We are dealing with a very light material that does not contain a lot of large stone. These types of conditions we knew would allow us to get ultimate return in this type of technology. “The technology that is available today is astounding. You can create a 3-D map of your proposed finished site, put it on a thumb drive, plug the thumb drive into your equipment, and let the GPS unit take over the controls of your machine, eliminating the daily staking out ritual of the site. “These machines roll out of the factory ready to have the mapping of your job site uploaded and go to work. There are no cables in between the machine and the blade, no bulky GPS mast attached to the blade that could easily be damaged or vandalized, no daily connections required between the machine and the blade. The machine was intelligently designed from the ground up to operate the world’s cutting edge grading technology.

Design Improves Operator Comfort, Safety, Visibility

The view from inside the cab of the Komatsu D51PXi is unobstructed. RICHARDS from page 6

Designed for Comfort It was not just the technology that made the Komatsu stand out for Richards. The entire machine had been designed to improve operator comfort and visibility, including moving the radiator from the front of the machine to the rear of the machine in an effort to increase blade visibility. The cab was moved far forward, directly above the blade so that the operator can at all times see the top and the bot- The Komatsu D51PXi dozer has a fully integrated, tom of the blade and the factory installed GPS system. exhaust stack has been moved so it no longer comes into the field of vision for the operator at all, right, tilts, etc.] is controlled by the intelligence center of the machine, giving you according to Young. “The machine is equipped with four exactly the grade you are looking for, usualoperating modes to provide ideal efficiency ly in a single pass of the machine.” Various sensors are located around the in all types of weather and soil conditions. As the doors opened at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, a long line had already formed at the registration table in the Milton CAT lobby. The 173 attendees consisted of 152 students, 20 parents and one member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

BRIDGE from page 1

“This agreement marks a significant milestone in this bridge replacement project.”

willingness to be innovative to deliver transportation projects. We look forward to the final phase of the process, the construction of this bridge.” With the agreement signed, the first stages of construction will begin with “in-water” work scheduled to start within the first two weeks of December 2014. The current bridge will be closed for six to nine months due to its intercepting the old bridge at the Kittery side. During that time, all traffic will be detoured to the Piscataqua River Bridge on I-95. MaineDOT will sponsor public informational presentations on the construction of the project approximately every six months led by the designers of the bridge, Figg Engineering/Hardesty & Hanover. During the summer months there will be some “tool box talks” in a safe area of the bridge to discuss the project. In early September 2014, a $25 million TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic

Andi Vigue Cianbro Corporation

Recovery) Grant was awarded to Maine and New Hampshire for the rail portion of the bridge. Maine Sen. Susan Collins, ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation as well as Maine Sen. Angus King and Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree were pivotal in identifying the crucial need of the grant to the USDOT. Construction will continue year round until completion, with the bridge scheduled to open to traffic in September of 2017. up a heavier load the tracks adjust, keeping the machine moving in a straight line, according to Young. “All of these features add up to our operator being able to hit the desired grade in a single pass of the dozer, dramatically increasing the efficiency of both the operator and the dozer. The accuracy of the grade is exact. We have yet to have the need to do a do-over.” “Our production levels have actually doubled. The second week on the job the Komatsu D51 boxed out a 51,000 square foot parking lot to subgrade with an approximately 4-foot cut. There were islands in the parking lot with a 60 percent grade. The dozer effortlessly hit those grades and shaped out the islands perfectly without any layout or staking. After the lot was subgrad-

ed, the Komatsu D51 placed a 1-foot layer of stone. This involved 1,900 yards of stone installed to a perfect grade without the use of staking.” East PBE East PBE, Richards’ Komatsu dealer, has been a key part of the process. “East PBE has been very involved from day one in getting us acclimated to the machine. They were here on the job site giving our people training and have been available to us by phone any time needed. They do whatever it takes to make sure we understand the equipment we get from them. Whether it be a purchase or a rental their attention to us as a customer is always there,” Young said.
