While the big news in New York State is that there is no money for anything, there are flickers of light in all that darkness. For more than 20 years, the city of Rochester and Monroe County have built a network of trails that place the Genesee River and Lake Ontario as water-centric centerpieces with public access in mind. The 1/112th Infantry Alpha Company Bridge in Manor Township is undergoing rehabilitation through October 2010. The bridge carries SR 66 over Garrett’s Run, SR 422 (Benjamin Franklin Highway), and SR 2025 (Garrett’s Run Road) in Armstrong County, just south of Kittanning, Pa. Originally constructed in 1980, this nine-span multi-steel girder bridge is 1,336 ft. (407 m) long and carries an average daily traffic of 8,827 vehicles. Rehabilitation work includes deck repair, flushing, expansion dam repair, substructure repair, superstructure painting, concrete approach slab repair and other miscellaneous construction. The $6.5 million Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) contract was awarded to Advanced Painting Systems Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pa.

By replacing the original design’s plan for a bridge with a culvert made from twin pipes, the project saved $80,000. Plus, it’s less obtrusive to the view of surrounding woods.
