On Aug. 26 the link between New York and Vermont got a little stronger as the center arch span for the new Lake Champlain Bridge was lifted into place. The 402-ft. (122.5 m), 1.8 million lb. (816,466 kg) arch is the last major section of the 2,100 ft long (640.1 m) bridge to be installed. Constructed at a Port Henry marina on the lake’s western shore, the arch was transported via two barges. It took nearly five hours to raise it into position with pairs of cable hoists that were mounted on both ends of the unfinished bridge. A barge mounted crane lifts a pre-cast concrete deck panel to the approach span at the end of the arch. The panels are then moved into position on the arch span using a roller system.

Just south of Staunton, Va., in Augusta County, a unique in-place pavement recycling project is currently progressing under the supervision of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Staunton District. VDOT and its contractor, Lanford Brothers Inc., of Roanoke, began the project in late March. Its purpose is to rehabilitate and repave a section of southbound Interstate 81 between exits 217, Mint Spring, and 213, Greenville in Augusta County. The contract is valued at $7.6 million. According to a VDOT press release,

Cost of Tappan Zee Bridge Cut Down to $5.2B By Jim Fitzgerald ASSOCIATED PRESS

“This is one of many sections of I-81 where the entire structure of the pavement, extending two feet below the surface, has deteriorated from more than 40 years of high traffic volume, and its accompanying heavy vehicle loads have cause the roadway’s wet foundation to rapidly deteriorate.” The press release noted that VDOT planned to employ a specific combination of reconstruction processes that had the potential to change the way the aging road system was rehabilitated. Three specialized processes were planned to recycle the existing pavement materials at the site and reuse them. “This will be the first time all three processes will be used together on a single pavement reconstruction project in the

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) The cost of a new Tappan Zee Bridge in the New York City suburbs has been shaved to $5.2 billion by focusing solely on the bridge, a federal agency said Oct. 11. In the past, mass transit components, ranging up to a new commuter rail line, were considered key elements of a new span over the Hudson River. President Barack Obama chose the project Oct. 10 for quick federal approval of environmental and other permits, and the Federal Highway Administration said those could be obtained within a year. Construction, creating thousands of jobs, could begin soon afterward, it said. The FHA said the 56-year-old bridge “is functionally obsolete and will soon be structurally deficient.” It warned that travel restrictions might be imposed if the bridge isn’t replaced.
