Batter Up … Barons Eager to Play in New Home By Cindy Riley CEG CORRESPONDENT

Construction teams in downtown Birmingham, Ala., are working at a near-record pace to complete a $64 million baseball stadium that will be home to the Birmingham Barons. The minor league team, affiliated with the Chicago White Sox, will play its opening game at the new Regions Field in mid-April 2013. City leaders and Barons executives broke ground on the development in February 2012. The park is located at First Avenue South and 14th Street South, directly across from the nationally recognized Railroad Park. Regions Field, as it will be known, will seat 8,500 fans, 3,300 fewer than Regions Park in Hoover, where the team played for more than two decades. Currently filled with construction cranes, cement trucks and steel beams, the property is undergoing a dramatic transformation. The actual stadium — or seating bowl — Birmingham Barons photo being excavated is among the numerous tasks laid out for Currently filled with construction cranes, cement trucks and steel beams, the construction crews, who are working long hours to meet the property is undergoing a dramatic transformation. spring 2013 deadline. According to Jimmy Shaw, senior program manager of general contractor Robins & Morton, “The playing surface sits about 18 to 20 feet below the street level. So, as you walk into the stadium from First Avenue South and 14th Street, you’ll enter the stadium and actually walk down see STADIUM page 66

Firms Optimistic: Outlook for 2013 Appears Strong Significantly more construction firms are planning to add new staff than plan to cut staff while demand for many types of private sector construction projects should increase this year according to survey results released Jan. 15 by the Associated General Contractors of America and Computer Guidance Corporation. The survey, conducted as part of Tentative Signs of a Recovery: The 2013 Construction Industry Hiring and Business Outlook, provides a generally optimistic outlook for the year even as firms worry about rising costs and declining public sector demand for construction. see OUTLOOK page 48
Bridge, Highway Project Promises to Ease Traffic By Peter Hildebrandt CEG CORRESPONDENT
For those heading to Myrtle Beach from central and northern parts of South Carolina, it can, at times, feel like the old saying, “you can’t get there
Most of the roadway work will be involved with widening and overlaying the existing pavement on SC 327 and constructing new ramps and loops at I-95.
from here,” is the truth. Over the years there has been talk of an interstate link to Myrtle Beach to make it a bit more accessible. But apparently any plans for such a highway at this point remain on the drawing board. In the meantime construction work to make existing traffic flow a bit more smoothly continues. One critical exchange is the place where four-lane highway 327 intersects I-95 which takes motorists north or south. Many travelers here need to reach I-20 and head up to the state’s capital at Columbia. Since the late fall 2011 improvements to this interchange have been under construction. The completion date for the work is late 2013. see ROADWAY page 62

JCB Machines to Help Unearth Buried Wartime Spitfires Two excavators and a backhoe made by Staffordshire-based JCB are about to embark on a mission to help recover Spitfire warplanes designed by one of the county’s most famous sons and believed to be buried in Burma. The unassembled planes are thought to have been hidden in the ground by American engineers across three sites as World War II drew to a close. Now a bid to excavate for crates thought to contain more than 30 of the Spitfires is about to get under way at Rangoon International Airport, and JCB is providing a 22 ton (20 t) JS200 tracked excavator, a 24 ton (22 t) JS220 tracked excavator and a 3CX Eco backhoe loader to complete the job. The company also is dispatching the team leader of the world famous JCB Dancing Digger display team, JCB demonstrator Oliver Keates of Cheadle, Staffordshire, to operate the machines and offer expert advice on the digging operation.

JCB was founded by renowned engineer Joseph Cyril Bamford in a lock-up garage in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, in October 1945 and under the leadership of his son, Chairman Sir Anthony Bamford, it has grown into the world’s third largest manufacturer of construction equipment. It is another great Staffordshire engineer, Reginald Mitchell, who is famous for designing the Spitfire. He was born in 1895 in Kidsgrove, Staffordshire, and educated at Hanley High School, Stoke-on-Trent. Bamford said, “Reginald Mitchell put Staffordshire on the map in the 1930s with the design of the Spitfire so it’s very fitting that JCB, a modern day innovator and engineering company based in the county, should be providing the excavators to dig up the planes.” Oliver Keates, who has worked for JCB for 14 years, said, “I’m excited at the prospect of being involved in this project.
It’s going to be thrilling to be at the controls of JCB machines attempting to unearth a Spitfire.” Businessman Julian Mitchell, of Newcastle, Staffordshire, who is Reginald’s great-nephew said: “I’m delighted that JCB is involved in helping recover the Spitfires. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) The Tennessee Department of Transportation said it will rebuild three piers supporting the Henley Bridge in Knoxville rather than try to repair the severely deteriorated concrete pillars. The Knoxville News Sentinel reported officials aren’t sure yet how much more time and money it will add to the $24.7 million project that has closed the span for two years. Originally, the bridge had a completion date set for June 30. TDOT bridge division director Wayne Seger said officials should have “a very honed estimate” by mid-January. Seger said damage to three of the seven piers supporting the bridge “It’s like remodeling was more extenyour house. You have sive than originally thought. He said an estimated time and the contractor, Britton Bridge once you’re in the LLC, will decide wall you find other how to remove the existing piers. He things wrong and it said construction plans call for takes a lot longer.” adding more structural integrity to Wayne Seger the structure. Tennessee Department of Transportation “We’re looking at getting a lot of years out of this bridge,” Seger said. “If it means going an extra mile that will ensure a longer life rather than patching it, I think that’s the direction we’re going in.” He also noted that less future maintenance would be required if the piers are rebuilt. He said it wasn’t possible for engineers to know beforehand how much the piers had deteriorated. “It’s like remodeling your house,” Seger said. “You have an estimated time and once you’re in the wall you find other things wrong and it takes a lot longer.” The degraded concrete was discovered as workers dug away at surface spots to be repaired. One pier had a hole entirely through the 2-ft. (.6 m) wide concrete. “When you start pneumatic hammering on it, that’s the tale to be told,” Seger said. Rebuilding the piers is critical to the rest of the work on the 81-year-old structure since the piers support the rest of the span. “You’ve got to bring the piers up because they solidify the structure,” he said.

With two speeds, the DXB260H breaker frequency can be adjusted between short and long stroke settings. This allows the operator to match the breaker frequency to the ground conditions for optimized productivity.
Doosan DXB260H Breaker Features Two-Speed Control The Doosan DXB260H hydraulic breaker features two-speed control of breaker frequency for improved efficiency in demanding demolition and rock-breaking applications. Delivering up to 600 blows per minute, the 5,400-lb. (2,500 kg) DXB260H is designed for use with excavators in the 30 to 41 ton (27 to 37 t) weight range, specifically the Doosan DX300LC and DX350LC. Rated in the 8,000 ft.-lb. impact energy class, the DXB260H requires a hydraulic flow rate of between 39.5 and 63.5 gal. (149.5 to 240 L) per minute. With two speeds, the DXB260H breaker frequency can be adjusted between short and long stroke settings. This allows the operator to match the breaker frequency to the ground conditions for optimized productivity. Standard features include a cradle-mounted grease station and blank fire protection. The cradle-mounted grease station delivers continuous grease flow, reducing bushing and tool wear while minimizing mainte-
nance costs and downtime. Blank fire protection uses a cushion of oil at the base of the cylinder to reduce metal-to-metal contact. The breaker’s suspension system extends excavator workgroup life by absorbing harmful vibrations and stress waves. Also, the valve design reduces hydraulic pressure peaks that can reduce pump life, crack excavator workgroup welds and cause system overheating. Finally, an energy recovery system on the DXB260H increases strike power by using energy generated by piston rebound, according to the manufacturer. The DXB260H breaker comes with a mounting cap, auxiliary hydraulic hoses, cradle-mounted greaser, two moil points, toolbox and a nitrogen checking device. A one-year warranty is standard. In addition to the general purpose moil, tools available for the DXB260H include a blunt tool, a chisel and a pyramidal or “nail” tool. For more information, visit www.doosanequipment.com.
Mulchers Transform Trees, Brush Into Fine Chip Layer The new Bradco Series II mulchers by Paladin Attachments attach to excavators, skid steers and forestry tractors to shred hardwood trees, brush and ground vegetation up to 8 in. (20 cm) in diameter. Available in cutting widths of 36, 60 and 72 in. (91, 152 and 183 cm) — depending on the machine and application — they feature a heavy-duty bent-axis variable displacement piston motor that offers better performance on demand, prevents stalling under heavy loads and provides a quicker recovery time, according to the manufacturer. To increase versatility, return on investment and productivity, they can be switched between prime movers without changing hydraulic motors, belts or belt drive sprockets/pulleys. The drive train’s synchronous belt drive system eliminates belt and belt drive sprocket/pulley slippage to lower operating cost and maintenance needs. An interchangeable tooth design keeps each tooth seated in its holder with a cross bar that runs the full width of each tooth. Standard reversible carbide teeth double operation life and can be easily interchanged without needing to rebalance the rotor. The spiral cut pattern reduces the amount of cut per
tooth for less drag, finer chip size and increased performance. The heavy-duty rotor construction of the Bradco Series II Mulchers features a balanced 0.75-in. (1.9 cm) wall drum that rotates at speeds up to 2,000 rpm with a 2.44-in. (6.2 cm) highstrength alloy steel shaft that passes through the entire length. Internal reinforcement rings minimize rotor flex for longer bearing life. Available exclusively on the MM36E 36-in. excavator model, the tree stabilization guide captures a standing tree trunk between the cutting rotor and frame with an angled “kick” plate to help the operator maintain full control. All Bradco Series II mulchers feature an adjustable push bar and replaceable abrasion-resistant AR400 skid shoes. An optional oil cooler also is available for both field and factory installation. Skid steer and tractor models feature an on-board pressure gauge for monitoring the system pressure with easy viewing from operating position. For more information, call 800/456-7100 or visit www.paladinattachments.com.

ESCO Corporation, a global provider of wear parts and attachments for the mining and construction industries, has developed a new hydraulic coupler that gives machine operators a simple connection to attachments and provides enhanced site safety. The ESCO PosiGrab coupler features both front and rear locks that are mechanically engaged through the full working cycle. The natural position of the coupler is locked and only opens using forced hydraulic pressure. The connection and release of an attachment, including the visual confirmation that the locking mechanisms are engaged, is done without the operator leaving the safety of the cab. Along with the safety and ease-of-use benefits, PosiGrab coupler was engineered to reduce stress on attachments and machines.

Talbert’s 50 ton (45 t) 5051 traveling axle trailer has been designed for customers that need to comply with 43-ft. (13 m) kingpin laws and regulations.
Talbert Introduces 50-Ton 5051 Traveling Axle Trailer Talbert Manufacturing’s 50 ton (45 t) 5051 traveling axle trailer has been designed for customers that need to comply with 43-ft. (13 m) kingpin laws and regulations. Kingpin laws vary state to state but generally apply to any trailer longer than 48 ft. (14.6 m) and less than 53 ft. (16 m). These regulations typically dictate the maximum distance from the kingpin to the last axle must measure 43 ft. or less. Adding to its series of travel-
ing axle trailers, Talbert pushed the deck length to the limit, designing a 51-ft. (15.5 m) traveling axle trailer to maximize the lower deck length and still meet the 43-ft. kingpin law. Talbert’s TA Series trailers are known for their six-degree load angle. This gradual slope is ideal for the towing and recovery industry, as well as rental equipment and small to midsize construction equipment with low ground clearances, such as rollers and pavers.
The 15,000-lb. (6,804 kg) planetary winch, which comes standard on all trailers in Talbert’s 50-Ton TA Series, provides customers with an efficient winch. The planetary winch uses a direct-drive system and offers up to twice the loading speed of the worm gear winch. Operators can run Talbert’s planetary winch through a multi-function wireless remote, which allows one person to load a piece of equipment without leaving the trailer. This is ideal for loading inoperable
cars or machinery, according to the manufacturer. For reliable performance in heavy-duty industries, Talbert’s 5051TA also comprises a T-1 & 80K steel beam constructed framework and 4-in. (10 cm) I-beam crossmembers on 9-in. (22.8 cm) centers to accommodate more concentrated loads. Further, the Ibeam construction prevents corrosion, unlike boxed crossmembers that tend to rust from the inside out. Other standard features include
1½-in. (3.8 cm) apitong flooring as well as side and center tie-downs. Apitong is a tightly woven, highly dense wood that provides a longer wear life because it is less susceptible to chipping or cracking than other deck materials. Side and center tie-down slots are installed for greater loading ease and application flexibility. For more information, call 800/348-5232 or visit www.talbertmfg.com.
Landoll’s 342 Designed to Handle Empty 20-Ft. Containers Landoll Corporation’s new trailer is designed to handle empty 20 ft. (6 m) containers. The Model 342 is a light duty Gooseneck trailer that works well with short single-axle tractors for increased maneuverability. The trailer comes standard with a fifth wheel king pin, 7-way electrical connection and a single air brake axle. The gooseneck is a short 8 ft. (2.4 m) and the lower deck is 23 ft. (7 m). The overall length being 31 ft. (9.4 m) long will legally handle up to 25 ft. (7.6 m) long containers. The 342 comes standard with a chain-drive load system, loading bridle, tie-down chains, push bar and container side pin lock-downs. The standard storage box is designed to keep all items organized with chain hanging racks and The 342 operates hydraulically by means of a wet kit on the truck or with an optional 27 hp (20 kW) engine package mounted on the gooseneck. trays.
The 342 operates hydraulically by means of a wet kit on the truck or with an optional 27 hp (20 kW) engine package mounted on the gooseneck. The 342 features a 10.3 degree load angle, 15,000 lb. air brake axles and weighs 8,800 lbs. (3,991 kg). The gear box chain drive system is a continuous ½ chain that has 12,000 lbs. line pull. Customers may choose the 2 5/16 in. ball hitch and electric brake axle option when pulling this trailer with a lighter duty truck. New Cross/Over Dump Trailer Available at Felling Trailers Felling Trailers added to its product line with the X55 cross/over dump trailer. Primary applications for Felling’s X55 cross/over include hauling materials such as rip rap, clay, demolition and a multitude of other materials that current bottom dumps cannot haul. Felling’s X55 maintains 70 percent of weight over the chassis. This product design greatly minimizes rollover issues currently experienced in the side dump and end dump industry, according to the manufacturer. The X55 also has the ability to dump “on the move.” It does not have to stop like other side dumps or end dumps on the market today, and it has the ability to dump at a higher speed than current bottom dumps. Because of the weight distribution, the operator does not see or feel movement in the tractor while the X55 is dumping, either on the move or while stationary. Additionally, because of the weight distribution, the operator does not see torque in the king pin. The X55 has the ability to dump at 55 degrees and is capable of dumping product
that could possibly stick in other trailers. Standard Features: • Frame length: 43 ft. 9 in. (13.3 m) • Tub length: 24 ft. (7.3 m) OD, 21 ft. 8 in. (6.6 m) ID • Width: 102 in. Crushing, Screening & Recycling Section Vibration Analysis System Maximizes Uptime, Profit Operations relying on screening as a key component in their value chain are now able to maximize product quality, uptime and profit by closely monitoring their vibrating screens to achieve peak performance and efficiency, due to the wireless Vibration Analysis System and Vibration Analysis Partnership Program completely designed by W.S. Tyler. The system and the program can help mines and quarries enhance product quality, improve productivity, reduce unscheduled maintenance and extend screen life, all of which translate to more profitability, according to the manufacturer. “We set out to create vibration analysis options that will positively impact the bottom line for mines and quarries,” W.S. Tyler Technology Manager Dieter Takev said. “We’ve accomplished that by designing technologically advanced systems that cater to the unique characteristics of vibrating screens and which are user friendly.” The goal of the vibration analysis system is two-fold. On one hand it offers the capability to conduct preventive and predictive maintenance. On the other, it pursues the ideal screening performance by optimizing the parameters of the screen in a way that particles find as many opportunities as possible to pass screen openings. The vibration analysis service is an in-person program that customers can utilize at intervals they deem necessary for their operations. Through the service, certified W.S. Tyler technicians visit customers’ sites to collect data from the vibrating screens. The technicians are equipped with signature wireless vibration analysis systems used for monitoring, data collection and analysis of speed, stroke and overall performance of any vibrating screen. Following each analysis, W.S. Tyler provides a detailed, easy-to-understand report that helps mine and quarry operators to better understand the interaction between their feed material, screen media and vibrating screens. Unlike standard diagnostic services, Tyler’s vibration analysis report not only contains all the data and information from the analysis, but offers a translation of the results into complete and easy-to-follow recommendations for improving the tested screens’ performance, maximizing screening

efficiency and minimizing unscheduled downtime. To help customers maintain consistently high performance, W.S. Tyler also offers a complete, ongoing and technology-based vibration analysis partnership program. Through the program, W.S. Tyler provides the complete vibration analysis technology kit, consisting of: • eight wireless Bluetooth accelerometers that are attached to the outside of the vibrating screen to take readings at intervals determined by the customer. • a hand-held data collection and analysis device (PDA) • the analysis software • batteries and chargers With the hand-held device, customers easily download vibration data and visualize initial findings. For a more in-depth report, customers simply transmit the data to W.S. Tyler via email. The company provides feedback to customers within 24 hours by sending a simple one page report, containing all recommendations. The process also creates historical data that customers and W.S. Tyler can use to evaluate performance over extended periods. Initial training on the program ensures each customer knows how to work the vibra-

Wirtgen Group’s Technologies Adapt for Extreme Conditions
The Wirtgen Group offers machines for mining and processing useful minerals with the Wirtgen surface miners and Kleemann crushing and screening machines.
The Wirtgen Group’s Mineral Technologies division offers a range of products for mining and processing useful minerals with the Wirtgen surface miners and Kleemann crushing and screening machines. Extracting minerals in opencast deposits and processing mineral raw materials places great demands on man and machine. Durable, high-performance equipment is an absolute necessity. Due to its many years of experience in the field of mineral technologies, the Wirtgen Group has technologies which are adapted for the most extreme conditions, according to the manufacturer. Wirtgen Surface Miners The established mechanical mining procedure is accomplished without conventional drilling, blasting and pre-crushing. Wirtgen uses its high-performance cutting technology here. The surface miners function much like cold milling machines, cutting and crushing the rock with a special cutting roller. Sturdy conveyor systems load it onto dumpers or deposit it beside the surface miner. Alternatively, the rock also can be placed between the chassis behind the machine.
The Wirtgen Surface Miners have cutting widths of 7.2 to 13.8 ft. (2.20 to 4.20 m) and cutting depths of 7.8 to 32.7 in. (20 to 83 cm) up to a uniaxial compressive strength of 120 MPa. Special machines for rock construction can even cut hard granite up to 260 MPa. Moreover, Wirtgen covers a performance spectrum from 110 to 3,307 ton (100 to 3,000 tph). The Product Range: Individually Configurable Standard Machines With the 2200 SM, 2500 SM and 4200 SM, Wirtgen offers three performance classes which can be variably configured specifically for each project. All of the machines can be configured for loading the material into dump trucks or depositing it as a windrow behind the machine. More than two dozen cutting roller designs are available as standard, while additional configurations are developed and built for the specific task at hand. The surface miners’ fields of application include opencast mining and routing work on roads, railway lines and tunnels. They enable the selective extraction of valuable minerals, coal, limestone, gypsum, bauxite,
phosphate and iron ore with great purity. Constant expansion of the spectrum of use means that surface miners also are used for special applications in salt mining, granite, kimberlite and oil shale. Kleemann Crushing and Screening Machines The Wirtgen Group also offers a wide range of jaw, impact and cone crushers and as well as screening machines for processing mineral raw materials. Kleemann has been in the business of processing natural stone for more than 150 years. Pieces of rock obtained from drilling and blasting work in quarries are processed to defined grain sizes. These classified final granulations are used as standardized additives for concrete and for asphalt base, binder and surface courses in road construction as well as civil engineering. In addition, Kleemann products are designed to handle the hardest minerals and materials. Kleemann provides its customers with application consulting for selecting the right machine to suit their requirements, according to the manufacturer.
The Product Range: Single Machine or Interlinked Machine Combinations Jaw crushers serve as classic primary crushers in natural stone. The mobile machines’ performance spectrum ranges from 110 to 1,653 tph (100 to 1,500 t). Extremely robust, high-performance machines with feed capacities from 496 to 1,102 tph (450 to 1,000 t) are used for traditional quarry applications. Secondary crusher units such as trackdriven impact and cone crushers are electrically interlocked to work in tandem with primary crushers and screens. The screen area of the chain-driven screening machines ranges from 75 to 198 sq. ft. (7 to 18.4 sq m). Their performance spectrum runs all the way up to 1,102 tph, making them well-suited for demanding tasks and material which is difficult to screen. Stationary machines with capacities from 110 to 1,102 tph handle all of the individual processes in addition to crushing and screening, such as washing, sand processing, mixing, dust collecting, etc., thus rounding off the range of offers. AP BUSINESS WRITER
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Caterpillar said on Jan. 28 that its 2013 profit could shrink if the world’s economy doesn’t pick up in the second half of the year, as mining companies and builders remain cautious about buying new gear. The cloudy outlook for the year came as Caterpillar reported a fourth-quarter profit less than half as big as a year ago because of a deal in China that went bad and slower growth around most of the world. Caterpillar Inc. is the largest maker of construction and mining equipment, so its performance rises and falls with the world’s economy. It tries to predict where the economy is headed so it knows how many excavators, bulldozers, and mining trucks to build. If recent economic improvements continue, this could be a record year for Caterpillar, its executives said. But if this year is a replay of the last two, where growth and confidence declined in the second half, “2013 could be a tough year,’’ said Doug Oberhelman, chairman and CEO. Caterpillar started 2012 expecting the U.S. economy to grow at least 3 percent but economists estimate annual growth was a little more than 2 percent. In April, the company was still forecasting 8.5 percent growth in China, but the world’s second-largest economy expanded by 7.8 percent last year, its weakest annual performance since the 1990s. Caterpillar dialed back production in the second half of 2012, which hurt fourth-quarter revenue and profits. Caterpillar and its dealers have both been trying to sell off inventory. Reduced production will continue at least through the first quarter, the company said. For this year, Caterpillar expects revenue of $60 billion to $68 billion, with a profit of $7 to $9 per share. Analysts had been expecting a profit of $8.54 per share on revenue of $64.58 billion. Caterpillar said there’s a wide range in its outlook because of the high level of uncertainty in the world. It expects relatively weak growth in the U.S. economy. Growth in China will improve, but not back to the levels seen in 2010 or 2011, Caterpillar said. It expects Europe to continue to struggle. It said first quarter revenue and profits will be “significantly lower’’ than the same period last year. In the quarter ended Dec. 31, Caterpillar earned $697 million, or $1.04 per share,
down from a profit of $1.55 billion, or $2.32 per share a year earlier. The most recent quarter included a noncash charge of 87 cents per share to write down the purchase of Zhengzhou Siwei. Not counting the write-down and a $300 million tax benefit, Caterpillar would have earned $1.46 per share. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had been expecting a profit of $1.69 per share. Revenue fell 7 percent to $16.08 billion as sales fell everywhere except Latin America. Revenue from construction equipment fell 25 percent. But sales of mining gear — now Caterpillar’s single largest category by revenue — grew 14 percent on improvements in all regions except North America, where coal mining is in decline. Caterpillar’s $653 million purchase of Siwei in June gave it a new business — roofing supports for mines — in China, the world’s largest coal producer. But on Jan. 18, Caterpillar said it had found “deliberate, multi-year, coordinated accounting misconduct’’ in the accounting at Siwei, and said it will write down its investment in the company by $580 million. It also said it dismissed several senior managers at the company. Oberhelman said on a conference call that new Caterpillar managers tried to reconcile Siwei’s inventory with what was on the books. They found a significant discrepancy, he said, prompting a deeper investigation. “What we discovered was deliberate, multiyear, coordinated accounting misconduct at Siwei,’’ he said. “It was executed by several senior managers at Siwei for the purpose of inflating sales, understating costs, and over-reporting profit, and it included fabricated documentation designed to cover their tracks.’’ He said Caterpillar is “considering all options to recover our losses and hold those responsible accountable for their wrongdoing.’’ He said the company wouldn’t comment further on “pending or contemplated litigation.’’ Asked why the physical inventory at Siwei wasn’t checked before the deal closed, Caterpillar Chief Financial Officer Brad Halverson said in an interview that such a check wouldn’t normally be done as part of the process of evaluating a company. “We did our normal due diligence process,’’ he said. For all of 2012, the company’s profits rose 15 percent to $5.68 billion, or $8.48 per share, up from $4.93 billion, or $7.40 per share, in 2011. Revenue rose 10 percent to $65.88 billion, from $60.14 billion.

Survey Indicates Construction Companies Will Continue to Invest in IT Infrastructure OUTLOOK from page 1
“While the outlook for the construction industry appears to be heading in the right direction for 2013, many firms are still grappling with significant economic headwinds,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “With luck and a lot of work, the hard-hit construction industry should be larger, healthier, more technologically savvy and more profitable by the end of 2013 than it is today.” Sandherr noted that significantly more firms are planning to add staff this year compared to the number of firms expecting to make layoffs. He said that 31 percent of firms plan to add staff this year, while only 9 percent plan to make layoffs this year. The scope of those staff additions are likely to be modest, however, with 79 percent of firms reporting they plan to hire 15 or fewer people in 2013 and only 13 percent planning to hire more than 25 new workers this year. Among the 30 states with large enough survey sample sizes, 56 percent of firms in Maryland plan to hire new staff this year, more than in any other state. Only 14 percent of firms in South Carolina plan to add staff this year, the least amount in any state. Meanwhile, 37 percent of firms in Michigan plan layoffs for this year, the highest percentage of any state. No firms working in Maryland reported plans to make layoffs this year. Contractors appear increasingly optimistic that demand for certain private sector projects will expand this year, Sandherr noted. Firms are most optimistic about the outlook for hospital and higher education construction, he said, noting that 36 percent of firms predict the amount of money spent on those projects will grow in 2013 while 39 percent of firms expect the market will remain stable compared to last year. Contractors also were optimistic about the markets for power construction, but had lower expectations for manufacturing; private office and retail, warehouse and lodging construction. Meanwhile, contractors expect demand for many types of public construction will decline in 2013. For example, 40 percent of contractors report they expect demand for public buildings to shrink in 2013 while only
18 percent expect that market to grow. Another 37 percent of contractors report they expect demand for K-12 school construction to shrink while only 20 percent expect it to increase. And 35 percent of contractors expect the market for manufacturing facilities to shrink this year, while only 23 percent predict it will expand. A significant — but smaller than last year — number of contractors report that customers’ projects have been delayed or cancelled because of tight credit conditions. Forty percent of responding firms report that tighter lending conditions have forced their customers to delay or cancel construction projects. Only 3 percent of firms reported having an easier time getting credit while 41 percent report no change in credit conditions. “Unfortunately, there are almost as many causes for concern as there are signs of optimism,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “Demand for public buildings is set to decline, manufacturing work appears to be slackening, materials prices and health care costs continue to rise and many firms are reluctant to make major investments in new equipment.” Simonson noted that overall demand for new construction equipment is likely to remain modest in 2013. Sixty-four percent of firms plan to purchase new equipment this year, down from 70 percent last year, while 77 percent of firms plan to lease this year compared to 78 percent in 2012. Contractors are increasingly relying on leasing equipment to avoid having to pay for idle equipment during lags in construction activity, the economist noted. Even as they shift toward more leasing, firms’ appetite for new equipment remains modest, with two-thirds of the firms planning to buy and 73 percent planning to lease $250,000 or less in equipment this year. Contractors also report being squeezed by rising costs for health insurance and construction materials. Seventy-five percent of firms reported paying more for health care coverage in 2012 and 77 percent expect to pay even more in 2013. Meanwhile, 88 percent of firms reported paying more for construction materials last year while 90 percent expect to pay more for their supplies this year. However, contractors are increasingly
optimistic about their ability to raise bid levels. Twenty-eight percent of firms expect to increase the amount they charge for construction this year, nearly double the 15 percent of firms that increased prices in 2012. An increasing number of construction firms — 38 percent in 2012 compared to 35 percent in 2011 — report using Building Information Modeling services, also known as BIM, association officials noted. And 43 percent report they expect the use of BIM to increase in 2013. In addition, more firms report working on public private partnerships, which leverage privatesector dollars to finance public projects. Thirty-seven percent of firms report being involved in these kinds of projects in 2012 and 97 percent expect demand for these kinds of privately financed projects to increase or remain stable in 2013. “The survey indicates that construction companies will continue to make investments in their IT infrastructure, specifically in areas such as enterprise content management, mobile field applications and solutions that support self-service functions,” said Roger D. Kirk, CEO, Computer Guidance Corporation. Kirk noted that 60 percent of firms report they plan to invest in their information technology departments in 2013. He added that 73 percent of those firms report they expect to invest over $10,000 in new information technology this year. However, a relatively small percentage of firms — 11 percent — report they plan to purchase new financial and job cost software in 2013, Kirk added. Similarly, only 9 percent of firms plan to lease or finance the purchase of new financial and job cost software in 2013. The outlook, which the association co-sponsored with Computer Guidance, was based on survey results from more than 1,300 construction firms from 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Contractors from every segment of the industry answered more than 30 questions about their hiring, equipment purchasing and business plans. Economists and specialists from the association and Computer Guidance analyzed those comments to craft the outlook.

SmartEquip Founder Schuessler Leads European Expansion SmartEquip founder and executive vice chairman, Alexander Schuessler will serve as president of the company’s newly formed international group. During the initial phase, Schuessler will lead the company’s expansion into Europe. SmartEquip currently provides the North American rental industry with a technology platform, connecting equipment manufacturers and dealers electronically with large fleet owners, to provide both real-time product support and electronic procurement capabilities. Users of SmartEquip’s e-FleetPro technology have documented dramatic operational efficiency improvements, as well as reduced equipment owning and operating costs. The SmartEquip Network in North America presently supports more than 100 suppliers and is used by approximately 40,000 users across 4,000 rental, dealer and other equipment locations. “Europe has long represented a natural expansion of our market. Today, we support many European, U.S.- based, and other international manufacturers in North America, and they have long urged us to
support their customers, dealers, and distributors on a broad global basis, noted Schuessler. “Similarly, over the past eighteen months, we have worked with numerous European rental companies and global contractors, who have carefully studied the use of the SmartEquip Network in North America and are ready to implement the technology in their business. We are excited about the partnerships we have now started to build in Europe, and I am personally pleased to oversee this very important aspect of our company’s growth. Schuessler served as the company’s founding CEO from 2000 to 2011. Prior to founding SmartEquip, Schuessler was a co-founder of Script International — a company that drove Caterpillar’s entry into the equipment rental business across South America. In the mid-1990s, he was a professor at New York University, where he also served as the director of the Politics Data Center, a research he designed and founded. He published an influential book as well as several articles on advanced statistical methods, published by the U.S. National Academy of Science.

R.E. Goodson Leads Critical Highway Ritchie Releases Widening Project to Myrtle Beach Online Market ROADWAY from page 1
This area also has seen a great increase in traffic with workers employed at a nearby Monster.com warehouse needing to get to and from their jobs. A wider highway and reconfigured interchange at this point, where these two roads come together will help traffic flow and keep drivers safer. The total cost of the entire construction project is $15.3 million dollars. The funding came through federal and state sources for construction of the bridge, all the earthwork operations involved with the clearing, all the paving and finally all the reconstruction at the interchange itself. The main challenge with this project, according to Mike Barbee, regional production engineer with the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), is dealing with the extensive amount of traffic in the area as travelers head to the beach throughout the year. “There’s actually quite a bit of resurfacing and other highway construction work going on in the region at present,” added Barbee. “On this project, the older bridge structure will be demolished and a new, wider bridge will be constructed in its place. “Most of the roadway work will be involved with widening and overlaying the existing pavement on SC 327 and constructing new ramps and loops at I95 so we won’t be doing a lot of tearing out. Minor amounts of pavement removal will be included.” The goal is to put in place a highway system designed to accommodate the increased amount of traffic that is ongoing as well as meeting current safety and design guidelines. “Bridges, highway widening and interchange reconfigurations are pretty much our bread and butter in this area of the state,” Barbee said. So far the weather has enabled work to proceed on schedule. The prime contractor on the job is R.E. Goodson Construction Company, Darlington, S.C., with subcontractors for the bridge work, asphalt and concrete work. Goodson is doing the grading work on the project and United Construction LLC, Great Falls, S.C. is doing the bridge construction. Ronnie Goodson, one of the owners of R.E. Goodson Construction Company, echoed Barbee’s comments. “The area traffic is our greatest chal-
lenge at this point,” said Goodson. “It tends to be unpredictable at times but you must be ready for it. The soil in the area is pretty much the same as is found in the region, a clay soil that retains moisture but is not impossible to work with.” The main subcontractors on the job are C.R. Ritchie Bros. released a new online equipment marketplace called Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne. Complementary to the company’s flagship unreserved auction business, Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne is a secure online marketplace for equipment and materials. Buyers and sellers can use Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne to negotiate, complete and settle their transactions in a safe and transparent environment. Core marketplace functionality has now been released and enhancements are being made on an ongoing basis; the next major release and full commercial launch is scheduled for the second quarter of 2013. “In late 2010 Ritchie Bros. adopted a new mission statement transitioning us from strictly an auction company to a solutions company. Our objective is to provide a number of different solutions to the world’s builders so they can easily and confidently exchange equipment,” said Peter Blake, chief executive officer of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. “Our updated estimate of the global used equipment market suggests that it is in excess of $200 billion in annual transaction value with approximately half of all equipment transactions taking place on a private treaty basis. Our surveys show that most of these private sellers are unsatisfied with their current experience because it’s not easy, and in many cases it’s not safe and secure. We believe Ritchie Bros., with our brand, data and industry expertise is uniquely positioned to deliver a great solution to this segment of the market — this solution is Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne and we believe it will enable the non-auction segment of the equipment market to easily and confidently exchange equipment like they never have before.” Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne was developed by building on the AssetNation platform, a leading online marketplace and solutions platform for surplus and salvage assets, which was acquired by Ritchie Bros. in May 2012. With this initial launch, AssetNation’s large corporate customers are now selling their equipment and materials on Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne. With the subsequent launch in the second quarter, additional functionality will be released and a broader range of sellers will be welcomed onto the Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne marketplace. “Much of the equipment and materials sold on Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne will be similar to the assets sold at Ritchie Bros. auctions,” said Dave Dawson, CEO of Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne. “But they will be listed and sold on Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne because the motivations and needs of some sellers are different and better met by an online marketplace than an unreserved auction. Ritchie Bros. auctions offer certainty of sale and global market value, whereas Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne offers sellers control over price and process. The distinction isn’t the type of asset; it’s the needs of the customer.” “We have a growing and profitable core auction business and we will remain firmly committed to it while we grow into the non-auction segment of the market by launching another great solution for the equipment industry — Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne,” added Blake. “We foresee many, many years of strong growth for our flagship auction business, but we also understand there are equipment owners whose buying and selling needs are not met by auctions. With Ritchie Bros. EquipmentOne we are now able to provide a great solution for that segment of the equipment market as well.” For more information, visit www.EquipmentOne.com.

After a complete redesign of its Marketplace web page in April 2012, Atlas Copco has now made the site smart-phone friendly. The mobile Web site makes accessing used Atlas Copco equipment even easier. Accessible via www.atlascopcomarketplace.com, the mobile Web site is one of several improvements since the site’s 2008 debut that make the online service even more useful to customers. For instance, it is now possible for visitors to see images and read equipment listings in detail without having to log on to the site first. A “print a brochure” function allows users to create PDFs to email or print out as hard copy. The home page includes a featured unit of the month and links to pages dedicated to such things as financing and global equipment availability. Atlas Copco also promises to keep the site current. Finance rates for equipment will be updated monthly. Parts and service specials will be updated monthly or quarterly, depending on the program. Links to additional content and various other Atlas Copco microsites and web pages will be provided as they are available or change.
For more information, call 800/732-6762 or visit www.atlascopco.us.

USDOT Secretary LaHood to Leave Obama Admin By Ken Thomas ASSOCIATED PRESS
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, the only Republican still left in President Barack Obama’s first-term Cabinet, said he plans to leave the Obama administration. The former congressman from Illinois said in an interview with The Associated Press that he intends to remain at the department until his successor is confirmed. LaHood has helped the Obama administration steer through a number of safety measures and highway projects during the past four years. His record has included steps to curb distracted driving, promote high-speed rail projects and improve roads and bridges. Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates also was a Republican. LaHood said he will not run for public office in his home state of Illinois, saying he believes “you should go out while they’re applauding.”
