Health’s director of planning, construction and real estate, said the expansion is crucial in order for the hospital to continue serving the area. “The medical center has exceeded projections since opening its doors on December 18, 2013. During the first 18 months of operation, it was at full capacity two to three days every week, and had a total of 9,000 admissions, 53,000 emergency room visits, 4,000 surgeries and 2,200 births. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory won more than a chance to run for governor again March 15. Voters also overwhelmingly approved a $2 billion bond package he has been speaking for across the state. The bond package won about twothirds of the vote. About two-thirds of the borrowed money will go toward new buildings,

repairs and renovations at all University of North Carolina system and community college campuses. The rest would go for local government water and sewer projects and construction money for parks, the North Carolina Zoo, the National Guard and the Department of Agriculture. McCrory, who won his primary too on March 15, was joined by former Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton and other Democrats in pushing for the bond. The governor said see BOND page 66

Power Equipment Hosts Intelligent Machine Control Day

P

ower Equipment Company hosted an Intelligent Machine Control Tech day at its Memphis, Tenn., branch location on March 18. At the core of the demo were the Komatsu “iMC” dozers and the PC210LCi-10 excavator. During the event, an informative presentation on data prep and building 3D models of a job site was presented by Glenn Etienne of Construction Engineering Solutions based in Leopold, Ind. Guided demos of the Komatsu Intelligent Control machines and “breakout” presentations of other available grade control items were provided. Staff of Power Equipment cooked lunch. Afterwards, guests were given plenty of time to continue demoing the machines and were given one-on-one time with the Power Equipment staff.

Felix Rutledge, Rutledge Contractors, Tupelo, Miss., was quite impressed with the Komatsu D51PXi dozer with Intelligent Machine Control and was interested in purchasing the machine. He said that in addition to being a well-designed machine, he liked the accuracy of the machine and said it would take the guesswork completely out of grading on a job site. “As a paving contractor, these machines would give us complete control of a project and we wouldn’t have to depend on anyone else to put the surface on grade for us. The machine could pay for itself in productivity and efficiency.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG

(L-R): Lex Rutledge and Felix Rutledge Jr., both of Rutledge Contractors, Tupelo, Miss., listen to Chad Roberts, sales representative, Power Equipment, Tupelo, Miss., describe the features of the Komatsu D51PXi dozer before taking a demo.

Power Equipment Company support for the event came from management staff from all over the state of Tennessee, (L-R) including Darryl Thompson, Memphis; Mike Luster, Nashville; Andy Moon, Knoxville; and Chris Gaylor, Knoxville.

see POWER page 18

The Komatsu D61PXi and D51PXi with built-in machine control garnered a lot of attention and demo time from the attendees.

Anthony Neely (C), Power Equipment Company intelligent machine control specialist, starts off the day with an overview of the technology behind the machine control system. Guided demos of the Komatsu Intelligent Control machines and “breakout” presentations of other available grade control items were provided.

(L-R): Anthony Neely, machine control product specialist, Power Equipment; Kyle Norwood, Norwood Construction, Henry, Tenn.; and Jimmy Spence, Power Equipment Company talk about the intelligent machine control features built into the Komatsu D61PXi.

Chris Gaylor (L), president of Power Equipment Company, and Barry Ferrell of Hydrema talk about the spacious cab of a Hydrema 922HM artic truck.

Caterpillar Inc. and SunSelect Produce Inc., known for producing premium greenhouse-grown vegetables for more than 30 years, announced a strategic collaboration that will take the waste products of Caterpillar’s combined heat and power cogeneration facility in Mossville, Ill., and put them to productive use in SunSelect hydroponic greenhouses. The agreement is subject to regulatory approvals, satisfactory due diligence, permitting and closing conditions. SunSelect will purchase real estate adjacent to Caterpillar’s energy generation facility, Advanced Tri-Gen Power Systems (ATPS), to construct a hydroponic greenhouse. The greenhouse is expected to utilize excess thermal energy and carbon dioxide from ATPS’s natural gas fired turbines. By providing low grade heat

and abundant CO2, the collaboration will maximize healthy plant production in the SunSelect facility and allow for more efficient use of Caterpillar’s power generation plant. “We’re optimistic about what this project will mean for our local community, bringing new jobs to the area and a new option for locally-grown produce to consumers, said Frank Crespo, Caterpillar vice president and chief procurement officer with responsibility for ATPS. “This project also perfectly exemplifies Caterpillar’s commitment to sustainability — which seeks a balance of environmental stewardship, economic growth and social responsibility. The SunSelect greenhouse will operate with a year-round growing season, serving as the company’s Midwest hub for both production and distribution. The greenhouse opera-

tions are expected to add up to 300 permanent local jobs when fully operational. Reinhold Krahn, director of SunSelect said, “This collaboration is a significant step in our long-term growth strategy. Building on our existing distribution footprint, this Midwest base will allow us to expand our ability to grow fresh and healthy vegetables, safely and responsibly, on the smallest amount of land possible. Subject to permitting, regulatory approvals and other required steps, it is anticipated that the agreement will close in the second quarter of 2016. Martin Health System Adds Three Stories to Its Facility

Martin Health System is adding 170,000 sq. ft. (15,793 sq m) and three stories to the facility.

growing communities.” An acute care facility, Tradition Medical Center is a 201,184-sq. ft. (18,690 sq m) structure located on the Tradition Center for Innovation Campus, at the southwest corner of Tradition Boulevard and Interstate 95. The hospital offers emergency services, as well as an intensive care unit, general and specialized surgeries, inpatient oncology, diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, clinical research, inpatient rehabilitation, an infusion suite and a number of physician offices. “While patients will receive the same high quality care they expect from Martin Health System, this expansion is designed to meet the needs of the Tradition community into the near future. The added capacity will enhance our patients’ experience, and should reduce wait times for emergency care and procedures,” said Kelly. As the project reaches its anticipated completion, Martin Health expects to add approximately 400 new jobs at the medical center, with a combined annual earnings of approximately $22 million, according to Kelly. “This will have a significant impact on the local economy, with growth in consumer spending projected to be $18 million. In addition to professional jobs, the hospital also brings an influx of physicians, patients and visitors to the area. “Martin Health is fortunate to be able to take on this expansion less than three years since opening the hospital’s doors. son for this is the flexibility that was built into the hospital’s initial phase — the mechanical mezzanine level was located below the patient floors, rather than above. This forward-thinking design allows for an easier and less costly expansion of the bed tower, so we can stay in step with Port St. Lucie’s projected growth. We are committed to quality, as we continue to grow,” said Kelly. The general contractor for the expansion is Robins & Morton, with HKS serving as project architect. According to Ryan Van

Dyke, Robins & Morton superintendent, work on the project began back in September, and should be completed by March, 2018. Currently, crews are working on a twostory horizontal expansion, the vertical expansion and construction of a parking lot. Teams have already completed a temporary neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) away from the vertical expansion, along with the removal of the precast exterior for the structural tie-in. Wind was a concern throughout the removal process.

Some key tasks yet to be carried out include extending the elevators up through the vertical expansion and performing a hard tie-in structurally at surgery/ED. Also, the vertical expansion exterior skin must be 100 percent dry to remove the existing roof. For the tower expansion, workers are extending the structure three stories over occupied labor and delivery. The project also calls for interior renovations. “They are difficult,” Van Dyke said. “Infectious control is of utmost concern, with constant cleaning of areas, workers and equipment. We have pharmacy, lab, imaging, med surgical and NICU.” In order to build new patient rooms, a great deal of coordination and scheduling is required. The detailed planning of cranes, lifting of equipment, quality control and other matters had to be addressed in a timely fashion. Van Dyke said expanding a medical facility differs from other construction projects, because the hospital runs 24/7. “The facility is 100 percent occupied at all times. There is no option of coming in at night or weekends or shutting down a wing to work. Infectious control and job site cleanliness is also a top priority.” Because the mechanical mezzanine level is located on the third floor rather than the roof, it allows for a more efficient vertical expansion. One advantage is that crews don’t have to relocate any of the air-conditioning equipment that’s generally situated see TRADITION page 70

Artificial Reefs to Turn Riverfront Into ‘Living Shoreline’ By Dale White SARASOTA HERALD-TRIBUNE

PALMETTO, Fla. (AP) A crumbling seawall turned out to be the catalyst for a project that will significantly alter the appearance and boost the popularity of Palmetto’s riverfront. Pedestrians viewing the Manatee River from the rebuilt seawall flanking the Green Bridge will be able to step onto artificial reefs and peer below at the interacting marine life. “It will be like viewing an aquarium,’’ said Todd Barber, whose Nokomis-based Reef Ball Foundation designed the concrete reefs. Last summer, the city received an inspection report from Ray Mathur Construction & Engineering stating that the 90-year-old seawall needed to protect roadways close to the river had greatly deteriorated and was at a “near failure stage.’’ When the City Commission discussed getting the seawall rebuilt, they also mulled over the possibility of an enhancement: an artificial reef. Yet they did not want just any artificial reef. “They didn’t just want a bunch of rub-

ble,’’ said Bob Gause, consulting engineer of the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency. City officials wanted “a living shoreline that’s ecologically functional and also interesting and nice to look at.’’ Noting that the Green Bridge (Business U.S. 41) area is “a gateway’’ into Palmetto, Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant said the city will be getting a marine life habitat that, for observers, will look “natural and calming.’’ The city awarded a $341,600 contract to Quality Marine Construction to rebuild the seawall. That work got under way in January. The city also negotiated an agreement for roughly $300,000 with Reef Innovations, a Sarasota-based contractor that Barber’s foundation has used to build more than half of the 7,000 artificial reef projects it has done in 70 countries. City Clerk Jim Freeman said the expense will be eligible for a reimbursement of up to 50 percent from the Southwest Florida Water Management District. Following Barber’s specifications, Reef Innovations owner Larry Beggs and his crew have been constructing 102 reef “modules’’ to be installed along 970 ft. of Palmetto’s riverfront after the seawall is completed.

“[They wanted] a living shoreline that’s ecologically functional and also interesting and nice to look at.’’ Bob Gause Palmetto Redevelopment Agency

The reefs, each built around a ball-shaped base with holes for marine life to enter and exit, vary in sizes and height, Barber said, to simulate the rugged topography of a real shoreline. “No two are alike.’’ Rather than the iron rebar that rusted in the existing seawall, Gause said, the artificial reefs are reinforced with fiberglass that will not erode beneath the porous concrete. The submerged portion of each artificial

reef will attract oysters, which remove pollutants from the water, Barber said. Fish will swim in and out of its honeycomb of holes. The middle portion of the reef will be more subject to the tide. It will get covered by algae and attract crabs and snails. Ledges and shelves will retain water and serve as tidal pools. Artist Vera Cole stains the upper portion of each reef to resemble natural rock. Salt tolerant cord grass will be planted in the surface. Actual seashells are embeded in the concrete for a realistic look. Pedestrians will be able to stand atop the reefs and peer into its holes to see the marine life below. The reefs also will protect the rebuilt seawall, Gause said. The existing seawall took a pounding from decades of waves that eventually rusted the rebar and took out chunks of concrete. The reefs will minimize that wave action. The “living shoreline’’ was expected to be in place in March, Barber said. “We’ll have a grand opening over the summertime.’’ (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Volvo CE Sees Market Share, Underlying Earnings Improve In the fourth quarter of 2015 Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) reported that net sales decreased by 11 percent to SEK 10,967 M, compared to SEK 12,277 M in the same period of the preceding year. These figures were due to further large declines in China and Brazil, coupled with headwinds in many markets outside of North America, which also showed signs of cooling. For the full year 2015 Volvo CE saw sales recede by 3 percent to SEK 51,008, while operating income almost doubled, at SEK 2,090 M, up from SEK 1,231 M in 2014. Transformation Is Working Operating income, excluding restructuring charges, during the final period of the year resulted in a loss of SEK 191 M, a considerable improvement compared to the loss of SEK 815 M in the same period of the previous year. Operating margin also showed signs of progress, at negative 1.7 percent for the period — up from a negative 6.6 percent in Q4 2014. Operating margin was positive for the full year, at 4.1 percent, sharply up

from 2.3 percent in the same period the year before. These relatively encouraging developments were achieved despite lower sales volumes, low capacity utilization and a credit provision in China of SEK 158 M. “In the face of a global market that remained flat to down during 2015, Volvo CE continued to execute on internal measures that drive profitability and resource efficiency, said Martin Weissburg, president of Volvo Construction Equipment. “Despite lower sales our operating results improved — and were much better than in the same period in 2014. We took market share in larger, more profitable machine segments, exited backhoes, graders and milling machines and implemented a new governance structures that allows us to make clear, informed decisions. This shows that the activities of the Volvo, SDLG and Terex Trucks teams to drive our transformation as Volvo CE globally are working. For more information, visit www.volvoce.com. UNTIMED POWER BOOST: STRENGTH ON YOUR SCHEDULE We know what it’s like to sit in the operator’s seat when you hit solid rock. The power boost button on most excavators can deliver the extra force you need to break through – but only in short bursts. We knew there had to be a better way, so we took our jobsite experience and collaborated with our engineers. The result is an untimed power boost that comes standard in all KOBELCO conventional excavators from the SK210LC to the SK500LC. It provides all the extra muscle you need continuously so you can power through the toughest jobs without interruption.

BedSafe Steel Box...

Kenworth Sleeper Unique Truck Accessories Designs Now Available for T880, T680 Models Heavy Duty Drawer Roller Box

Kenworth’s new 40-in. sleeper is now available for order with either the T880 or T680.

Kenworth’s new 40-in. sleeper is now available for order with either the T880 or T680. Kenworth’s 40-in. sleeper with the T880 is suitable in vocational applications that use straight trucks, such as petroleum haulers or the tow industry, and for tractors that transport flatbeds, lowboys or other trailers where length and weight are a factor. The sleeper also is a good fit in the Kenworth T680 for regional bulk haulers who prefer to operate a highly fuel-efficient tractor. The sleeper provides a 260lb. weight savings compared to Kenworth’s 52-in. regional sleeper for additional benefits. The 40-in. sleeper has a compact, yet comfortable sleeping environment and optimal storage. A 24-in. wide by 78-in. long, liftable bunk with 90-degree tilt offers easy access to under bunk storage. The sleeper provides more than 22 cu. ft. of storage space to handle gear for occasional stays in the sleeper, and has storage shelves and a cell phone cubby. The interior includes coat hooks specifically designed to hold hardhats as well as coats. There are two standard toolbox doors. Fleets and truck operators may specify the Diamond VIT or Vantage interior. To help drivers operating in tight locations, three optional 19-in. by 36-in. stationary or sliding windows are available on the back of the sleeper. Some additional options include LED marker lights, extreme temperature insulation, premium speakers, side extenders, stainless steel sunvisor, and 19in. by 12-in. outboard windows. “Kenworth’s expanded and enhanced sleeper lineup for the T880 and T680 gives our customers greater flexibility and choice in meeting their specific application requirements, while also providing driver comfort in a lighter weight sleeper package. The 40-inch sleeper has generated interest from our customers from the minute we announced it was under development,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director. Both the T880 and T680 are now available with the new PACCAR MX-11 engine rated up to 430 hp and 1,550 lb-ft of torque. For more information, visit www.kenworth.com.

Unique Truck Accessories, Sturgis, Mich., designed a heavy duty drawer roller box in early 2015, based on demand from contractors who needed a floor box but also wanted to save every pound of payload possible. The BedSafe was developed and tested to be half the weight of the steel boxes of similar design, according to the company. Reinforcing the top with 1/8 in. (.3 cm) welded channels allows a top load of 500 lbs. (227 kg) evenly distributed. The drawer is constructed of 1/8 in. aluminum with a welded divider system coupled with adjustable dividers from front to back to keep components separated and organized. The drawer has a 350 lb. (158.7 kg) capacity and operates smoothly with a roller bearing design. Features also include a plunger latch system to protect against unintentional closing. A push button lock makes for easy entry and protection against

theft and an overhead rain gutter assists against water rushing into the drawer when on an incline and assists in weather resistance. The Brute BedSafe is available in six sizes to fit nearly every application of pickup bed, service body and van. It comes in bright aluminum diamond tread material. The BedSafe can be purchased through most truck accessory dealers around the country. For more information, visit www.uniquetruckaccessories.com or call 800/239-2343. Altec Wins Work Truck Show 2016 Green Award for JEMS 4 Series Hybrid System

Altec Inc. (Birmingham, Ala.) won The Work Truck Show 2016 Green Award for its JEMS 4 Series (Jobsite Energy Management System) hybrid-electric system. The award was presented at The Work Truck Show 2016, which was held March 1 to 4 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. The Green Award recognizes the product at the show that best improves work truck fuel utilization, as determined by a panel of trade media editors and truck fleet managers.. Altec JEMS 4 Series is an updated energy management system for utility work trucks. This integrated plug-in uses stored electrical energy to power the aerial device, tools, accessories, exportable power and engine-off cabin heating and cooling. It features lithium-ion energy and an ondemand electrified PTO (ePTO) for hydraulic power. This allows bucket units to operate quietly without the truck engine running, which is an advantage in urban areas. The compact system is equipped with Altec’s idle mitigation system that eliminates unnecessary idle time when the vehicle is parked, automatically transitioning from engine power to JEMS power. This reduces fuel consumption while minimizing emissions and engine maintenance, according to the company. JEMS 4 Series supports the EEI Transportation Electrification Initiative. “Altec is very pleased and honored to be recognized (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment with the Green Award for this environmentally smart Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

product,” said Mark Greer, market manager of Altec. “We have worked hard to develop solutions our utility customers need to help meet their work practices and sustainability goals. JEMS products also can be applied to work trucks serving a variety of industries.” For more information, visit altec.com. Kenworth T880 Adds Hendrickson ULTIMAAX Suspension The vocational flagship Kenworth T880 is now available for order with the Hendrickson ULTIMAAX advanced severe-duty rubber suspension. The ULTIMAAX suspension offers a balance of empty ride quality and loaded stability for driver comfort, while also cushioning the load and protecting the chassis, cargo and body equipment from excessive vibration and road shock due to potholes and rugged terrain. For the T880, the suspension is available with axle ratings from 46,000 to 52,000 lbs. (20,865 to 23,587 kg), axle spacings of 54and 60-in. (137 and 152 cm) with 11-in. (28 cm) ride height for applications such as refuse, sand and gravel, crane/boom, platform, construction, and logging. “Fleets that operate trucks up to 52,000pound capacities can now specify the Hendrickson ULTIMAAX severe-duty suspension with the Kenworth T880 to provide their drivers with a consistently smooth ride while running loaded or empty on the harshest roads and terrains,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director. “The Kenworth T880 equipped with a PACCAR MX-13 engine rated up to 500-hp and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque already provides a durable, reliable and productive vocational

For the T880, the suspension is available with axle ratings from 46,000 to 52,000 lbs. (20,865 to 23,587 kg), axle spacings of 54- and 60-in. (137 and 152 cm) with 11-in. (28 cm) ride height for applications such as refuse, sand and gravel, crane/boom, platform, construction, and logging.

truck for such demanding applications. The severe-duty suspension helps enhance the T880’s traction, stability and handling under loads from 46,000 to 52,000 pounds. Plus, it adds even more durability and helps customers maintain a lower cost of operation with its components designed for maximum weight savings for additional payload.” The suspension features bar pin end bushings, a progressive load spring design and a rugged axle connection to extend its service life. The progressive load spring design also makes replacement easier and the rugged axle connection can reduce re-bush time. Rubber shear springs carry a majority of vertical load in the empty condition, creating a smoother ride. As the load increases, the suspension’s ride and stability characteristics

change to meet the application’s needs without an abrupt change in spring load. “The rubber shear springs also contribute to longer service life for the T880 and the body equipment,” Swihart said. Integrated with the rate spring design and rugged axle connection is Hendrickson’s proven walking (equalizing) beam technology, which utilizes a central pivot point to help keep tire contact with the road or worksite surface, maintaining traction. Its flat-bottom design increases ground clearance, plus

it delivers up to 17.5 in. (44 cm) of diagonal wheel articulation to keep the load on all drive wheels. Available in day cab, 40in., 52-in. and 76-in. sleeper configurations, the Kenworth T880 comes standard with the PACCAR MX-13 engine rated up to 500-hp and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque. The PACCAR MX-13 provides a lightweight, fuel-efficient engine for vocational applications, including dumps and heavy haul applications over 100,000 lbs. (45,359 kg). The T880 can be ordered with a 116.5in. (296 cm) BBC hood optimized for the PACCAR MX-13 engine and providing enhanced visibility, or with the standard 122.5-in. (311 cm) BBC hood. “By equipping the Kenworth T880 with the ULTIMAAX severe-duty suspension, customers can greatly enhance the driverfriendly T880, making it an even more productive work environment, ultimately resulting in the attraction and retention of good drivers,” Swihart said. Atlas Copco SmartROC KPI-JCI, Astec Mobile Screens D60 Takes on Challenges Release 2056 Vanguard Jaw Crusher Raising both productivity and consistency comes with the automation capabilities of the Atlas Copco SmartROC D60. The SmartROC D60 drills accurate quarry, construction and surface mining blastholes from 4 ½ to 7 in. (11.4 to 17.7 cm) in diameter. The versatile down-the-hole (DTH) drill rig also can be used in toe-hole, dewatering and horizontal drilling applications. “What we have in the SmartROC D60,” said Mike Wentworth, product manager of Atlas Copco Surface Drilling Equipment, “is robustness and intelligence working together to achieve optimum performance and cost efficiency. The result is that the owner gets more holes per shift and consistently high productivity.” The SmartROC D60 rig’s increased automation capability optimizes efficiency for consistent productivity. Hole navigation system (HNS) and auto positioning features improve fragmentation characteristics by precisely locating holes, accurately collaring and drilling them to the required depth and inclination. The standard SmartROC D60 feed eliminates the need for inductive sensors, ensuring more reliable handling of 16.5-ft. (5 m) drill steel from built-in sensors of its rod handling cylinders and carousel motor. The rig’s auto rod handling feature automatically adds and then extracts rods when desired depth is reached. Its feed can be positioned

horizontally, making service and maintenance routines even easier. The SmartROC D60 rig’s improved fuel economy from its 475 hp, Tier IV Final Cat C15 turbo charged diesel engine is achieved through intelligent control of compressor load and engine rpm. Estimated fuel savings can be as great as 15 percent over similar rigs, according to the manufacturer. “The development of this rig is the latest in our drive to produce a wider range of surface drill rigs giving better results at lower cost. It’s the smart way to go in today’s economy,” said Wentworth. For more information, call 800/732-6762 or visit www.atlascopco.us. KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens has expanded its Vanguard product line with the more compact 2056 Vanguard Jaw in efforts to meet every producer’s operational needs. The 2056 Vanguard Jaw Crusher features a 20 by 56 in. (50.8 by 142 cm) jaw crusher that is ideal for sand and gravel applications, and also excels in recycled concrete and mining applications, according to the manufacturer. “The small gap provides an excellent nip angle at a tight closed-side-setting, making this the perfect jaw for applications where the material is minus-16 in.,” said Ron Griess, product manager of KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens. “Additionally, the crusher’s high reliability paired with best-in-class performance leads to a lower cost per ton over the lifetime of the crusher.” Significant changes engineered into the new 2056 model include a new single cylinder auto-tension system, which offers less maintenance, increased reliability and reduced wear part consumption. The crusher’s new wear seat provides

easy access and increased uptime, while a new corrugated stationary wedge increases the crusher gap and maintains a steep nip angle, providing less slippage, lowering the wear costs by providing longer jaw die life. Its flywheel retention system secures the flywheel in place, providing enhanced reliability and longevity. The shaft and bearing assembly increases serviceability and reduces maintenance and rebuild cost, providing a lower total cost of ownership through the lifetime of the machine. The electric motor mount, v-belt drive and guarding are all integrated on the machine, providing an easy-to-install compact package for mobile or stationary applications. A large 1-¼ in. (3 cm) stroke and heavy-duty flywheels result in a lower fuel cost per ton and offer 33 percent more inertia than competitive models, according to the manufacturer. Energy efficiency is the key to success at modern mines and quarries. The most potential for energy and cost savings can be realized in the comminution process, where ore is ground and crushed into smaller particles. With the HRC 3000, one of the largest, fullyoperating high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) in the world, Metso provides an energy-efficient solution with a range of features, aimed at getting more value from every ton of ore, according to the manufacturer. The HRC 3000 was the result of a close collaboration between Metso and Freeport-McMoRan Inc. The goal was to develop a highly efficient HPGR crushing circuit for the newly constructed Metcalf concentrator at Freeport-McMoRan’s copper mine in Morenci, Ariz. In approximately four years, the team went from a design concept to the largest fully operating HPGR in the world. Demonstrated Efficiency The HRC 3000 started operating at Freeport-McMoRan’s copper mine in May 2014. The installed unit is allows for fewer lines of equipment, which reduces the amount of ancillary equipment. To date, the unit has operated for more than 8,400 hours and has crushed more than 34 million tons of porphyry copper ore. Metso’s solution has provided the Morenci mine with several benefits, including an estimated 13.5 percent increase in energy efficiency over traditional HPGRs based on pilot scale testing, according to the manufacturer. The HRC 3000 is the first full-scale HPGR to incorporate revolutionary design features like the flanged tire design and the arch-frame. Depending on the application, the total capacity of this HPGR can exceed over 5,400 tons (4,899 t) per hour of ore. “In addition to boosting the equipment’s energy efficiency, our main goal was to innovate and to push the existing boundaries in order to ensure a valuable solution to our customer. This HPGR is not only a larger scale version of what was currently available to the market, but also applies technological solutions to overcome some inherent concerns typically associated with traditional HPGRs, including skewing and edge effect,” said Victoria Herman,

MB America’s Live Demo Draws Crowd at World of Concrete In the Silver Lot of the Las Vegas Convention Center, an excavator and a skid loader picked up large concrete chunks with a jaw crusher attachment — signaling to passersby that the crushing action was about to begin. MB America’s crusher attachments smash another round of concrete debris and precast concrete at World of Concrete 2016. Last year, MB America crushed the World of Concrete 2015 event with its live crushing demonstrations. This year, at World of Concrete 2016, the company crushed for another record crowd of attendees. “You have to see the MB crusher crush in person. There’s no other way to describe how it works without seeing it for yourself,” said Max Ravazzolo, C.E.O. of MB America. “Once you know that the machine can crush through concrete and spit out the rebar, you will be so impressed that you’ll start to wonder what areas of your job you can start crushing, where you can start saving some time, and when you can start adding more money back into your pockets.” The company occupied an outside booth in the Silver Lot at the Las Vegas Convention Center, where more than half the booth was dedicated to the live crushing demonstrations. An excavator and a skid

loader were equipped with the crushing attachments, showing the wide range of products the company offers. The excavatormounted attachment, the BF90, was crushing down to a 3-in. minus, while the skidloader-mounted attachment, the MB-L120, was crushing down to a 1-in. minus. The company also showed attendees how the crushing attachments are able to crush materials with rebar. Using an iron separator,

the excavator-mounted attachment was equipped to remove rebar from the pile of crushed concrete and move rebar to the side of the work area — without the operator having to leave the cab of the excavator. At the non-demo area, MB America featured two more excavator-mounted crusher attachments (BF70 and BF120), the largest skid-loader-mounted crusher attachment (MB-L200), and the latest skid-loader-

mounted screening attachment (MBLS140). MB’s product line has expanded to include several new attachments for the construction and demolition industry. Now, MB offers screening attachments for skid loaders and backhoe loaders, 360 degree grapples, and rotary head drum cutters for a wide scope of work — which includes demolition and excavation, road work, quarries, mining, pipeline work and environmental reclamation projects. MB products are available for any excavator, skid loader or backhoe loader, regardless of brand or size. MB’s attachments use the auxiliary hydraulic system of the excavators, skid steers and backhoes, allowing contractors to work in tight areas, difficult access locations, steep slopes and urban areas. Contractors will be able to reuse materials immediately at the job site and provide a greener option in recycling waste materials. By reusing the materials, contractors and businesses can save time and money in reducing waste and trucking costs. For more information, call 855/622-7874 or visit www.mbamerica.com. Attachments Expand Versatility, Reduce Operation Costs By Debbie McClung

Both wheel loaders and excavators can be used with different attachments — more than two dozen types and models — that can help increase revenue and keep machines working year-round.

SPECIAL TO CEG

Expanding a crawler or wheel excavator or wheel loader’s versatility is a cost-efficient alternative to operating dedicated machines on a job site. Attachments help construction equipment owners grow business, replace less effective machines, lower operating costs and significantly increase a machine’s flexibility. Attachment versatility for construction equipment can stretch your fleet resources with their ability to adjust to changing applications and serve as work tools to perform multiple jobs. Both wheel loaders and excavators can be used with different attachments — more than two dozen types and models — that can help increase revenue and keep machines working yearround. Attachments also offer a low initial investment with a high rate of return. When budgets are tight, it’s typically easier and more cost-effective to rent or purchase attachments to complete a special job or offer a niche service than to purchase a separate machine. Contact your local equipment dealer to inquire about its attachment inventory when special projects or applications arise. “With the right selection of attachments, a contractor may only need to bring one excavator or one wheel loader to a job site,” said Lee Smith, Doosan heavy attachments product manager.

Excavator Attachments Crawler and wheel excavators are ideal candidates for attachment integration, which can help owner-operators build a custom fit to complete projects far beyond just earthmoving. Attachment connection systems and auxiliary hydraulic flow allow many sizes of excavators to be extremely effective tool carriers for a wide variety of attachments. Those attachments include: • Buckets • Clamps • Crushers

Quick Coupler Safety Newer designs of quick coupler models have been one of the most significant improvements to excavators due to their ease of operation, faster connections and updated engineering features to help prevent the unexpected release of attachments. Unlike gravity systems in previous coupler designs, some manufacturer’s spring-activated safety locks perform better in severe and dirty environments. To prevent accidents related to improper use and maintenance of quick coupler attachment systems, it’s important to train operators on the proper maintenance and safe practices for engaging and removing attachments. Most excavator and quick coupler manufacturers provide warning decals and other instructions to alert operators not to use the coupler without a safety pin installed. Doosan attachment product specialist Lee Smith recommends the following additional quick coupler safety tips: Select a Coupler Design Supported With Engagement Safety Features • A spring-activated front safety lock designed to retain the attachment in case of improper attachment connection. • A secondary spring-activated rear safety lock to retain the rear attachment pin in case of hydraulic cylinder failure. • Pins constructed from extra-high-strength steel to increase durability. • A control system that provides for safe attachment engagement and release.

• Grapples • Hydraulic breakers • Hydraulic pin grabber quick couplers • Plate compactors • Rippers • Wedge-lock couplers Shane Reardon, Doosan excavator product specialist, also dispels the notion that excavators become less versatile as their sizes increase. This industry misperception has occurred because machines have typically been dedicated to do a single job with one attachment. “Even the larger excavators can be more versatile if you put different attachments on them,” he said.

Wheel Loader Attachments While attachment options for wheel loaders and excavators are typically not compatible due to different attachment change mechanisms, loader-specific attachments have turned these heavy-duty machines into valuable assets for every season. The most popular attachments for wheel loaders range from light-material, general or all-purpose material-handling buckets to heavy, rock or grading buckets. • • •

Use Only Attachments That Are Approved by the Excavator and Coupler Manufacturers Operators should only attach and remove attachments in a secure environment and ensure that the quick coupler is properly engaged with the attachment before operating. Remove the Attachment Using the Quick Coupler Safely For safe attachment removal, operators should lower the coupler and attachment on the ground or a structure at level height. Consult the manufacturer’s operation and maintenance manuals for more information about proper use of the quick coupler. Maintain Quick Couplers to Prevent Excessive Wear The manufacturer’s recommended preventive maintenance inspection procedures should be followed to maintain the coupler so that it operates properly. Important to coupler safety are regular visual inspections of the quick couplers to avoid changing conditions, modifications or alterations that could cause the quick coupler not to provide a secure attachment connection. With some coupler systems, the operator will need to manually inspect the safety pin to make sure it is correctly positioned and hasn’t developed wear issues.

General purpose buckets Pallet forks Grapples • Light-material buckets • Snow pushers • Multi-purpose buckets • Hydraulic quick couplers • Rock buckets “With several different types of buckets and specialty attachments available, the loaders’ capabilities can be maximized to serve a wide variety of applications year-round,” said Mike Stark, Doosan wheel loader product specialist. Multi-Function Machines If you’ve ever owned compact equipment, you know the key to achieving a favorable return on investment is to reach high machine utilization. Leveraging attachments to perform certain tasks can significantly increase those rates. The same is true for heavy equipment. A multi-function machine that is productive on a daily basis not only has a greater chance of generating profit, but also can be more responsive to your needs on a job site. see ATTACHMENTS page 64

For example, you may have a dedicated excavator only used for trenching or ditching, and if so, you may be missing an opportunity (or more). Fit your excavator with attachments such as a grapple for land clearing, a trenching bucket to dig foundation footings or a plate compactor to finish trenches. “There are some contractors with a mindset that they’ll bring in a piece of heavy equipment for site preparation and then assign a smaller piece of equipment for other tasks,” Smith said. “Having machines sit idle while you bring in different equipment isn’t the most efficient way to work. By utilizing attachments, operators can do more with fewer machines.” Maneuverability on most confined work sites can still be achieved with excavators as large as 50,000 lbs. (22,680 kg) and wheel loaders up to 40,000 lbs. (18,143 kg). The ideal end goal, Smith said, is to make the power unit as versatile as possible and on as

many different job sites as possible. The key to getting the most productivity from an excavator or a wheel loader is the investment in a quality attachment change system, which is optional on most manufacturers’ machines. Some industry experts estimate that a quality automated coupler mount on an excavator can save owners up to 25 percent of their total machine operating time compared to direct-mount attachments. According to Reardon, a quick coupler installed on the end of an excavator arm speeds up efficiency. “It allows the operator to change an attachment on a machine in a fraction of the time compared to manually using pins to connect the attachment to the excavator,” he said. Many of the efficiencies are gained from operators being able to rapidly change attachments with a quick coupler from the comfort of a cab. Bond Package Will Give $980M for the University of North Carolina System BOND from page 1

it shows a bipartisan effort aimed at helping the state’s future can succeed. “North Carolina has sent a message to the nation that people can come together and work to pass a bond package that will benefit future generations,’’ McCrory said in a statement. McCrory and others said North Carolina has added 2 million people since the last borrowing package was approved in 2000, and that kind of growth and the passage of time requires spending money. Senate Minority Leader Dan Blue said lawmakers’ careful spending allowed the bond idea to work. “Through years of staunch fiscal responsibility, this state is in a unique position post-recession. It is time to make some sound investments in this state and preserve our infrastructure and resources,’’ said Blue, D-Wake. There wasn’t much organized opposition to the bond bill. Critics said there were unnecessary projects on the list, and the things that needed to be built or repaired could be paid for without borrowing. But they acknowledged they had a tough fight. John Suddath voted for the bonds at a school in Raleigh

near North Carolina State University. Suddath said he wishes the state would have borrowed more with cheap interest rates and used that money to improve roads and bridges. McCrory asked for a bigger bond package to include road projects, but legislators turned him down, opting to pay for roads through transportation funds. “I believe in public education, and with interest rates so low, it is the most effective way of dealing with capital costs,’’ Suddath said. The Council of State will have to sign off on issuing the debt, but that is a routine step since lawmakers have already decided where to spend the money. The bond package will give $980 million for the University of North Carolina system. All 58 community colleges in North Carolina will split $350 million, with local matching funds needed for new construction. Nearly $310 million will go to water and wastewater system projects, with $100 million of the amount earmarked for grants and the rest for loans. Komatsu Program Marks 60,000th Service Interval Komatsu America Corp. and its distributor, Columbus Equipment Company, announced the completion of Komatsu CARE’s 60,000th service interval. Komatsu America pioneered complimentary maintenance for Tier IV machines in the construction industry with the launch of Komatsu CARE in 2011. The 60,000th interval was completed on a Komatsu D61EXi-23. A service certificate was presented to machine owner and Columbus Equipment Company customer, John Eramo & Sons Inc., at a ceremony to celebrate the milestone. Eligible Komatsu Tier IV constructionsized machines, whether rented, leased or purchased, are covered by the Komatsu CARE program for the first three years or 2,000 hours, whichever comes first. Komatsu CARE includes scheduled factory maintenance, a 50-point inspection at each service and two complimentary Komatsu diesel particulate filter exchanges. For certain Tier IV machines, diesel exhaust fluid tank flushes within the first five years are available as well. “If lowering cost of ownership, improving equipment uptime and reliability and protect-
