the surface stemming from years of use. These conditions and grade differentials made the terminal challenging for stevedores handling the cargo, and also was very inefficient as sections of the full 244,840 square feet could not be used for storage.”

PORT ALLEN, La. (AP) West Baton Rouge Parish officials have taken what they say is an important next step in building a toll road linking La. Highway 415 to La. 1. Parish President Riley Berthelot told The Advocate a consulting engineering firm has been hired to produce a highly accurate picture of the project’s revenue potential. Berthelot said the parish’s transportation authority was entering into an agreement with the CDM Smith firm to conduct a $460,000, eight-month study aimed at obtaining the needed information. CDM Smith’s study is being financed through a state grant, Berthelot said. The La. 1 connector route is a project Berthelot has been pushing for more than a decade. The parish president said he believes the proposed roadway, estimated to cost $30 million, would help reduce traffic congestion caused by vehicles using the existing Port Allen bridge across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Berthelot said about 44,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily in a parish that has a population of 24,000 people.

Construction crews in Mobile, Ala., are busy refurbishing the Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) as the docks experience dramatic growth in iron and steel trade. “The old yard was very

dated, with approximately 70,000 square feet of unused road and rail area positioned on the back side of the pier area,” said ASPA spokesperson Judith Adams. “The Pier C North terminal is the ASPA’s largest open yard on the main docks. Large sections of the yard had depressions or patched holes in

relieve the congestion is to lengthen the exit and entrance ramps in the area. Longer ramps increase visibility while driving, give plenty of room to vehicles and let drivers prepare and act when incidents occur just ahead on the interstate. In White Pine, Tenn., lengthen see RAMP page 20

Growing Demand…

Volvo CE Confident of Sustained Recovery Volvo CE President and Chief Executive Pat Olney has used a press conference in Miami to confirm his belief that the recovery in the North American construction equipment market is gathering momentum. His comments to a group of leading Americas business journalists attending an event on sustainability during the Miami stoppover of the Volvo Ocean Race came shortly after the company posted a spectacular 111 percent uptick in North American revenues in the first quarter of 2012. “Demand for construction equipment in North America jumped 35 percent during the first three months of the year,” Olney stated. “This shows us that the recovery that began last year is gathering pace and that our earlier forecast of a 15 to 25 percent year-on-year improvement for 2012 is attainable.” Volvo CE’s North American performance during the quarter helped the company to a 17 percent increase in global net sales and to post record levels of profitability for a first quarter. Olney used the press event, held on May 17, to emphasize the company’s commitment to the environment and sustainability. He drew journalists’ attention to Volvo CE’s Stage IIIB/Tier IVi emissions compliant range of engine systems — and highlighted the more than 60 new fuel-efficient products that are being introduced to the global range in 2012. These products form part of the most fundamental overhaul ever of the company’s product portfolio — and will go some way to helping Volvo CE achieve its WWF Climate Savers commitment of reducing CO2 emissions from its machines

sold between 2009 and 2014 by 16.5 million tons. “Volvo Construction Equipment is in a good position to capitalize on improving market conditions in North America,” said Olney. “We are outperforming the market conditions by offering a young fleet of innovative products tailored to meet the needs of specific customer groups, combined with a strong and loyal distribution network and a substantial investment program. Confidence in American Market As previously announced Volvo CE is spending $100 million in a product and manufacturing expansion program at its North American facilities. The latter investment will see its facility in Shippensburg, Pa., expanded to accommodate production of Volvo wheel loaders, excavators and articulated haulers — adding 16 new machines to the 50 road machinery products already produced at the plant. A worldclass customer and demonstration center also will be built in Shippensburg “After a protracted downturn we have every confidence that the North American market is well on the road to recovery,” Olney stated. “We are continuing to invest throughout the business cycle in our people, our production facilities and distribution networks. With a technologically advanced fleet of innovative — and award winning — products, we have made a strong commitment to the Americas and regard it as a home market for the company.” For more information, visit www.volvo.com.

Wright Express Releases Monthly Construction Fuel Index Wright Express Corporation, a global provider of value-based business payment processing and information management solutions, in collaboration with IHS, a global source of information and analytics, released results of its Wright Express Construction Fuel Consumption Index (FCI), which indicated an increase of 3.5 percent in March versus its level the previous year. The Wright Express Construction FCI measures national fuel consumption statistics for the construction industry, which provides an accurate and up-to-date indication of construction activity in the United States. The construction segment comprises approximately 20 percent of the Wright Express portfolio of customers. “The results of the March 2012 Fuel Consumption Index indicates increased fueling activity in the construction sector, which typically accompanies an improvement in U.S. construction activity,” said Michael Dubyak, chairman and chief executive officer of Wright Express. “It is encouraging to see a positive uptick for March following the negative year-over-year metrics witnessed for the previous three months.” Wright Express worked with IHS to capture and analyze transaction data from its

…the strong growth in March marks the largest month-over-month gain in fuel consumption for the seasonally-adjusted index since the creation of the FCI. closed loop network of more than 180,000 fuel and vehicle maintenance locations, including more than 90 percent of the domestic retail fuel locations and 45,000 vehicle maintenance locations. With this data, the Wright Express Construction FCI can be used to identify emerging trends within the construction industry and the national economy. The indicators were tested at monthly, quarterly and annual frequencies, with the greatest insights produced using the yearover-year percent change of the monthly data. For March 2012, the Wright Express Construction FCI reported that fuel consumption by U.S. construction companies increased by 3.5 percent versus March 2011 and increased by 3.8 percent versus the pre-

vious month. The Wright Express Construction FCI, is available monthly in advance of the U.S. Census Bureau figures on construction spending. March 2012 Wright Express Construction Fuel Consumption Index (FCI) According to the Wright Express Construction FCI, the strong growth in March marks the largest month-over-month gain in fuel consumption for the seasonallyadjusted index since the creation of the FCI. Other recently released construction data has been less positive as the unusually warm winter weather boost faded and the industry lost 7,000 jobs in March and 6,000 in

February. Additionally, real spending on infrastructure is likely to remain on a downward trend through next year, given the budgetary problems confronting state and local government. IHS Analysis According to the IHS analysis, after three years of depressed construction, the inventory of new housing is beginning to tighten. New home sales declined by 1.6 percent in February, but inventory continues to shrink, which is good news since builders will have to replenish stocks by ramping up starts once demand rebounds. Housing starts were down in February, but were still at their third-highest level since October 2008. Meanwhile, housing permits rose 5.1 percent in February to a 717,000 annual rate, which is the highest level since October 2008. The pickup in permits in February is a good sign for future homebuilding activity. 2012 should be a better year for housing than 2011. Pent-up demand for housing is building as young adults stay at home, and at some point will spark a revival in housing activity. For more information, visit www.wrightexpress.com/fci.

SANY America Named 2012 Global Impact Awards Finalist The Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce named Sany America a finalist in the Foreign Direct Investment category of the 2012 Global Impact Awards. Each year, the Metro Atlanta Chamber recognizes international companies making significant contributions to the local community and economy. Over the past five years, Sany America has invested more than $60 million in Georgia and currently employs more than 120 people. Last year, SANY announced its intention to build a new $25 million R&D facility alongside the company’s 400,000 sq. ft. corporate headquarters in Peachtree City, Ga. The new R&D site will employ roughly 300 hydraulic and mechanical engineers focusing on systems research. “We find tremendous value in the local community here in metro Atlanta,” said Kyle Nape, vice president of global sales and marketing, after receiving the finalist recognition plaque at a ceremony in the city. “The community in Peachtree City has welcomed us with open arms, and we feel privileged to call the Atlanta area our home.” SANY America is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SANY Heavy Industry, China’s largest construction equipment manufacturer. Last year, SANY entered the Financial Times Global 500 list and in May 2012, the company finalized its purchase of Putzmeister, the leading global concrete pump manufacturer. Kyle Nape (L), vice president of global sales and marketing, with Greg Trainer, vice president of crawler cranes.

Timothy Doucette Caterpillar Plans $37M Visitor’s Center Promoted to GM — “Peoria has some extremely positive Brand Strategy things to talk By Scott Hilyard

(PEORIA) JOURNAL STAR

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) The $37 million Caterpillar Visitors Center is on schedule to open the same day as its nextdoor neighbor, the $100 million Peoria Riverfront Museum. Save the date. It’s Oct. 20, 2012. With a world-class hotel tied in with the expanded space at the Peoria Civic Center and the two new shiny metaland-glass buildings that fill up Museum Square, “Peoria has some extremely positive things to talk about for residents and for people who come to visit,” said Jim Baumgartner, director of public affairs of Caterpillar Inc. Baumgartner and company spokeswoman Kathryn Spitznagle led a tour through the center May 2. The tour required safety glasses, hard hats, close-toed shoes and a lot of imagination. While it is 60 percent complete, the building now more resembles a construction zone than the company’s future global showcase for its heritage, products and services. Buckets of paint are clustered on unfinished floors. Sheets of gypsum

board are stacked against unpainted walls. The building currently is lit by sunshine and construction lamps attached to electrical cords that hang temporarily beneath unfinished ceilings and exposed HVAC duct work. But the spaces are taking shape. The center will have exhibits and features that represent all facets of the Caterpillar experience; product development and design; a heritage gallery;

a tribute to workers around the world; a theater inside a life-size replica of a two-story tall, 380-ton 797 mining truck; and a makeup of an actual construction site with at least 10 Caterpillar tractors and machines on display. A construction trailer will hold several simulators of Caterpillar products that visitors will be able to operate. An expanded Caterpillar merchandise store welcomes visitors at the front of the building. The top floor, with the best views of the river, with floor to ceiling windows on the back of the building, will have office space, a conference room and kitchen and dining areas. It will not be accessible to the general public. Baumgartner said the building was designed to be used and seen by a variety of visitors — school groups, Caterpillar dealers and customers and regular folks off the street with an interest in the company, its people and its products. An admission price has not been set and it will include exemptions for dealers, customers and the elderly, Baumgartner said. “We’re all pretty excited about what this has turned into,” he said.

Weather Impacts March Hiring Pattern Construction employment increased in 155 out of 337 metropolitan areas between March 2011 and March 2012, decreased in 134 and stayed level in 48, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released May 2 by the Associated General Contractors Timothy Doucette has been promoted to the newly cre- of America. Denver-Aurora-Broomfield, Colo., added the most jobs (5,600 jobs, 9 percent). Other areas adding a large number of jobs included IndianapolisCarmel, Ind. (5,300 jobs, 15 percent); Phoenix-Mesa, Ariz. (4,200 jobs, 5 percent); Portland-VancouverHillsboro, Ore.-Wash. (4,000 jobs, 9 percent) and Bakersfield-Delano. The largest job losses were in Chicago-Joliet-Naperville, Ill. (minus 4,100 jobs, minus 5 percent) and Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Fla. (minus 4,000 jobs, minus 8 percent). Monroe, Mich. (minus 36 percent, minus 800 jobs) lost the highest percentage. Other areas experiencing large percentage declines in construction employment included Springfield, Mass.-Conn. (minus 25 percent, minus 2,000 jobs), Anchorage, Alaska (minus 20 percent, minus 1,600 jobs), Anniston-Oxford, Ala. (minus 20 percent, minus 200 jobs) and Sheboygan, Wis. (minus 20 percent, minus 300 jobs).

Association officials said construction employment also was impacted by the market uncertainty being created by unresolved federal infrastructure measures. Construction firms that build public infrastructure, in particular, are uncertain about future work levels given Washington’s failure to enact a host of long-term investment measures like the highway and transit bill. Adding to the confusion, many construction firms, including many small companies that file taxes under individual rates, are uncertain how much they will owe starting next year, they added. “When it comes to politicians talking about the need to support private sector job creation, construction firms could benefit from less rhetoric and more action,” said the association’s chief executive officer, Stephen E. Sandherr. “Instead of jousting at straw men and arguing about who cares more, it would be helpful if Congress and the administration would instead help end much of the uncertainty holding back the industry.”

Charles Blalock and Sons Leads I-81 Ramp-Lengthening Job RAMP from page 1

ing work has begun on the ramps on the south side of the interstate. Ramps also will be lengthened going north and coming off I-81, as well as on and off ramps C and E. On the north side construction work will change ramps A and I. Motorists will no longer have to cross traffic to head south on the ramp leading to Knoxville. Travelers going south from Morristown who need to get off on I-81 and go south often run into trouble in this area, explained Harlan Loveday, project superintendent of Charles Blalock and Sons Inc., Sevierville, Tenn. “There have been several accidents right here where people were crossing over the traffic and people traveling from White Pine north will run into them when they cross the traffic — especially big trucks,” said Loveday. “That’s going to make it a lot safer on the north side of the bridge. On the south side of the interstate, people will be able to go south without having to cross over the traffic of people going to Morristown, Tennessee.” As of February 2012, 24 percent of the work on this project was completed with 19 percent of the total amount of time on the project charged. From SR-32 to I-81 southbound (Ramp A) bridge substructure has been completed, with the beams involved scheduled to be set in the spring. The construction of the I-81 northbound on and off ramps is ongoing. Opening of these ramps is tentatively scheduled for mid-summer 2012. The frontage roads behind the Hardees, BP and area hotels directly at this job site are currently open to traffic. But existing driveways to these businesses will be closed in for much of April 2012. The access entrance and Cracker Road construction (grading and utilities) is underway as well. SR-32 traffic (both directions) will be placed on the SR-32 outbound bridge to allow demolition of the northbound bridge. Work on the bridges will control the schedule for the remainder of this year into next. “The biggest challenge on this project will be getting the bridges over Interstate 81 torn down and then building new bridges to replace them,” said Loveday. “That’s going to be really tough. We’re just going to have to work

with a lot of caution. Traffic is going to be under us on the interstate; we’ve got be sure that nothing falls on the traffic below us.” Lane closures will be done throughout the period of taking the bridge down. Traffic will be shifted to the left or to the right side as needed as all the work on disassembling the bridge and then reconstructing it is completed.

Charles Blalock and Sons owns all their own equipment. Once in awhile they will have to rent some equipment, such as an air compressor or other odd equipment.

“We also have a wall to build under the existing bridges now,” added Loveday. “I came up with the idea to just put all the traffic going north and south on Routes 25 and 32 on one bridge, tear one complete bridge down and build a wall at the same time. The wall will be on the north side of I-81. The wall will hold the embankment back and prevent small landslides involved with construction. This will be a lot safer for everyone, according to Loveday. He feels it is best to do things in phases on each bridge; tear one third down and once you have that done, you get traffic moving on that rebuilt section, where it is able to cross. Next you take the middle section out. When that is done you place traffic on that section. “Finally we will take the outside section out and do the same thing. It’s going to be safer for everybody, safer for the public and safer for those doing the work.” As of this writing, clearing efforts down along the ramp were underway. The ramps were being “blue-topped” and prepared for having stone placed on top of them. There is stone on ramp A and blue-topping will continue, placing down stone, dressing up the slopes and placing topsoil down in prepa-

ration for permanent seed to be placed on the banks. Cranes are now onsite, prepared for when the beam-launcher will be used to start to mount the beams out onto the bridge. Bridge beams will be set on the beam-launcher and will then ride out onto the bridge. The cranes will set the beams on the pilings and piers. A hill on the south side of I-81

more accessible. I predict that four to five years from now people passing through here won’t realize how much things have changed in that short period of time.” Overall, the job is on schedule. The rain is what slows down the work the most, according to Loveday. “When it’s cold weather and it stays cold it is actually better weather for working. It’s the wet weather that kills you, especially in this wet clay,” said Loveday. “No soil had to be brought in, but we did have to remove some soil. We did have to bring in some six-inch rock material for lining ditches, otherwise everything we needed soil-wise was already here.” At the corner of one of the ramps an excavator breaks up the gray limestone rock and loads it into a dump truck below, on the shoulder of the existing ramp. The rock will be removed and a stabilizing wall — the same type that you see along the side of the The frontage roads behind the Hardees, interstate — will in turn BP and area hotels directly at this job be constructed there. site are currently open to traffic. at that time. “We’ve moved 600,000 cubic yards of dirt on this job so far,” Loveday continued. “Most of that was waste, especially in the taking down of the hill some seven to eight feet; we didn’t have much fill material involved with the job, and most of the material moved was waste. The people who owned the property before we got this job had the land logged off. I was told the profit from the timber was about $56,000 dollars.” Traffic while work proceeds is another challenge. “A lot of these folk have little regard for the people out here working,” said Loveday. “The men on the job cannot be looking toward the traffic all the time or they wouldn’t be getting much work done. But I do have some good weather coming up and some good men working with me out here. We will meet this challenge fine, I think. We have time on our side. The project won’t be completely finished for at least another two years. So far we are right on schedule. In the end this will be a much safer area for drivers traveling through from all directions. At present we’re working hard to keep our workers safe onsite to get the job done for those travelers.” Charles Blalock and Sons is involved in a wide variety of construction work, much of it involving highway improvements. The company also participates extensively in Environmental Green Building efforts. The company also runs Blalock Academy, a required safety, HR and environmental training series for all company supervisors. The program includes state-administered erosion-control training and certification for all grade foremen; implementation of plant and job site inspection checklists for safety and environmental issues; extensive use of recycled asphalt; concrete, reclaimed aggregate; fly ash and blast furnace slag; pursuit of NRMCA Green Star certification for concrete plants and development of alternative concrete washout options, including selfcontained bins. Crews Bring Alabama State Port Authority Up to Date ASPA from page 1

Workers will demolish the current concrete slab and take out unused road and rail spurs at the base of it, before completely resurfacing the pier, according to Jimmy Lyons, the authority’s executive director. The six-month shutdown will lead to roughly 15 to 20 percent more outside storage space for steel beams, hot rolled coils and plates. Adams explained, “The open yard is deep draft and is rail served, making it ideal for iron and steel articles. With the growth of regional steel production — ThyssenKrupp, SSAB, Severstal, NUCOR — the terminal's capacity is being stretched. The improvements at Pier C will increase capacity and improve handling/throughput efficiencies.” Port officials have closed Pier C North, on the north end of the port’s Mobile River properties, which had traditionally been the port’s main steel terminal. Construction officially began March 1, 2012, with an estimated completion date of Aug. 31, 2012. Currently, work is on schedule and on budget. Specifically, the project involves the demolition of the existing rail car conveyor pit, concrete slab remaining from previous transit shed demolition, utilities and two landside railroad tracks. The work includes placement of structural fill to bring the storage yard to finished grade and includes a finished surface of concrete pavers. Also included is installation of auger cast piles, new transition slab and new high mast lighting. Although ASPA conservative construction estimates ranged between $5.25 million and $6 million, the contractors’ bids were very aggressive, bringing in the low bid of just more than $3 million by Ben M. Radcliff Contractor Inc., Mobile, Ala. According to Ben M. Radcliff Project Manager Crenshaw Poole, “Our biggest concern is scheduling. It’s a long pier, and we have only so much time to complete everything, so meeting our deadline is key. There’s still a lot that has to be done between now and the end of August. “We do our own concrete work,” Poole explained, “which is

a huge portion. A site contractor handles the concrete demolition and a piling contractor will install the auger cast piles. In total, roughly 3,500 yards of concrete will be poured. The last portion of the project will be the interlocking stone pavers, which will take about a month to install. We’re looking at 252,000 square feet of pavers, so it’s a very big task.” Equipment on the job includes four Caterpillar trackhoes (including one with a hydraulic hammer on the front for demolishing concrete), a Cat front-end loader, a Cat backhoe, a Cat bulldozer, a lull and a Terex crane with a 60-ft. auger for putting in cast piles. Crews are demolishing the current concrete slab and taking out unused road and rail spurs at the base of it, and will completely resurface the pier. The refurbishment is the largest resurfacing job that’s taken place in the port, utilizing concrete pavers. The authority is not doing the standard concrete slab surfacing technique, but rather repaving using concrete paver brick. The brick is durable and more cost-effective.

The auger cast pile being driven in the transition yard. This increases the load bearing capacity of the transition yard to 1,500 psf.

“Pier C North represents approximately 244,840 square feet of yard,” Adams added. “When the project is completed it will retain rail quayside, but the older rail on the south side yard will have been removed. About 70,000 square feet of that south side area comprised of an old road and an old rail spur that was situated at a lower grade — in some areas three feet of grade differential. To optimize the entire area for handling and storage, the terminal yard needed to be brought to uniform grade and completely paved.” Dedicated in 1928, the port

authority imports heavy lift and oversized cargo, aluminum, steel, copper, wood pulp, plywood, fence posts, veneers, roll and cut paper, cement and chemicals. Exports include coal, containers, lumber, laminate, flooring and iron. “Over the past several years,” said Adams, “the seaport’s hinterland has been populated with either new or expanding steel manufacturing mills. Another reason is that global market conditions are ripe for export of U.S. steel products. Pinto Terminal is handling the inbound carbon steel slab for the ThyssenKrupp USA steel mill in

Calvert, Ala. When competing for the mill during the site selection process, the ASPA knew it had to develop a terminal to handle the inbound semi-finished slab, quickly, efficiently and at a minimum cost. “The Terminal’s design and the use of RFID technology, a unique barge haul system, and the overall design of the pier itself helped achieve those goals. It was estimated at full ramp up, that ASPA would be handling up to four million tons of import steel slab annually through the Pinto Terminal,” Adams continued. “We also anticipated that TK’s logistics group would use larger vessels to reduce shipping costs between Brazil and Mobile. We’ve seen incremental increases in the volume and the vessel sizes as the mill ramps up. The March record shipment of 94,210.244 metric tons was broken just a few weeks later when the M/V MAGSENGER 8 delivered 102,488 metric tons of slab to the terminal. “Pinto Terminal was designed for efficiency with cranes that can directly discharge to either barge or storage using magnet lift technology, reducing the time, labor and costs associated with dunnage, and three Post-Panamax cranes to work vessels. Currently we are discharging approximately 25,000 metric tons per day. These two record ships were both handled in four days,” Adams concluded. The ASPA owns and operates the state of Alabama’s deep-water port facilities at the port of Mobile. Its public facilities handled 25 million tons of cargo last year. The authority’s container, general cargo and bulk facilities have immediate access to two interstate systems, five Class-1 railroads and almost 15,000 mi. of inland waterway connections. The completed demolition/renovation project, therefore, should have a major effect on day-to-day operations. Said Adams, “The refurbishment will definitely have an impact. It should provide more handling and storage space for steel cargoes, and improve handling efficiencies in the terminal.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Cat Brings Fuel Efficiency to 100-Ton Class With New 777G The new Cat 777G off-highway truck introduces performance, production and fuel efficiency in the 100-ton (91-t) size class. The 777 was first introduced by Caterpillar in 1977 and has proven to be a workhorse for mining and large earthmoving customers. The 777G replaces the 777F and delivers greater levels of production and fuel efficiency as well as enhanced safety, operator comfort and service convenience, according to the manufacturer. The 777G achieves greater production with seven percent more torque powering work and new transmission controls that produce quick haul cycles with automotive quality shifting. The production increases are balanced with new fuel saving strategies that include configurable economy settings as well as an adaptive economy mode that automatically optimizes fuel consumption based on the user’s production baseline. Fuel savings also are realized behind the scenes through features such as auto neutral idle and APECS transmission controls where the truck becomes more fuel efficient at idle in a forward gear and when climbing grades. Customers can choose to engage features like engine idle shutdown and speed limiting to further improve fuel savings. In addition to its fuel efficiency, the 777G is quieter and produces fewer emissions. Caterpillar is introducing its U.S. EPA Tier IV Final solution on the 777G two years in advance of the effective date of the regulation, which provides customers an opportunity to advance their sustainability goals. The solution is both simple and robust and includes engine technology combined with diesel oxidation catalysts. It requires the use of ultra low sulfur diesel fuel and low ash engine oil, but requires no

additional maintenance or operator input. For operations outside of areas regulated by the U.S. EPA, the 777G reduces emissions with Tier II or EU Stage II equivalent technology and fuel efficiency. Caterpillar has enhanced braking and traction control for G Series. Hydraulic oil-immersed disc brakes are now standard on all four corners of the truck. The system design increases slope holding capability and provides fade resistant, responsive braking performance. Design updates extend brake component life by increasing the force used to disengage the brakes. The optional Cat engine brake can extend service brake life and integrates with automatic retarder control, enabling fast downhill travel and reduced cycle times. The new parking brake system actuates the front brakes as well as the rear for solidly holding the truck on a slope. In addition to brake performance updates, the traction control system on the 777G is now able to differentiate between tire spin and high speed turns so it now

can activate at lower speeds. The system now uses the hydraulically applied service brakes for improved response time and modulation from one wheel group to the other. The 777G also features new designs to enhance the safety and comfort of operators and maintenance personnel. The access system is wider, low effort and convenient with new hand rails promoting three points of contact. Inside the cab, the operator experiences 50 percent less sound compared to the previous model. The Cat comfort seat is Series III with vibration reducing technology and a three point restraint system. It is highly adjustable and promotes allday comfort as does a new foot rest and automatic temperature control. The left side window is electric, and like the windshield, features laminated glass for safety. Emergency egress is available through the hinged window on the right side. Object detection comes standard on the 777G. Using a combination

of radars, an in-cab display and multiple cameras, object detection provides equipment operators with enhanced awareness for increased site safety. The 777G also offers tire monitoring through use of payload values from the truck production monitoring system and data such as air temperature and truck speed to calculate the load placed on tires. As tires approach their rated load-speed rating, a warning is given and customers can choose a course of action, including slowing down or reducing payload. Maintenance is quick and convenient with ground level service centers for both electrical connections (located on the front bumper) and fluid fill. The optional fluid fill center provides access to all fluids from one centralized location. It includes a lighted keypad with level indicators giving operators instant information on what needs filling. Additional fluid level monitoring is available to the operator in the cab. Caterpillar is extending its hydraulic oil filter service intervals to 1,000 hours, reducing cus-

tomer life cycle costs. Next Generation Cat Transmission Controls The 777G introduces the next generation of transmission control strategies from Caterpillar. Advanced productivity electronic control strategy or APECS provides greater productivity at better fuel rates with torque shift management that allows the truck to carry more momentum up grades. Drive train durability profits from next generation electronic clutch pressure control, and APECS further provides outstanding shift quality for a smooth ride. Tier IV Final Emission Controls Transparent to Operator New emission control strategies enable the Cat C32 engine to meet Tier IV Final emissions regulations in the USA and Canada. The strategy includes the Cat NOx reduction system and two diesel oxidation catalyst canisters, one for each bank of cylinders in the “V configured C32. Working in combination with ACERT, the Cat NOxreduction system diverts a small volume of cooled engine exhaust back to the combustion chamber. The result is reduced cylinder temperatures and reduced NOx formation. This NOx reduction system takes full advantage of the cleaner, less corrosive properties of ultra low sulfur diesel fuel and low ash engine oils to maintain service intervals and component life. The two diesel oxidation catalyst canisters trap residual hydrocarbons in the exhaust. This 777G Tier IV Final strategy is transparent to the operator and does not require additional service for the machine. For more information, visit www.cat.com.

DuraSeal Tire Survives 367 Punctures Without Losing Pressure While this year’s Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., drew a record number of attendees, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company set its own record of sorts during the threeday event due to its DuraSeal Technology. Mid-America Trucking Show attendees drove 367 nail holes into a Goodyear G394 SST wide-base trailer tire at the tire manufacturer’s booth — without any impact on tire inflation. Attendees punctured the tire using Goodyear’s “DuraSeal Popper,” a device that enables users to pierce the tread area of a tire by pulling down on a handle. (The tire was mounted on the DuraSeal Popper, but not under a load at the time.) “The results were eye-popping,” said Tim Miller, marketing communications manager, Goodyear Commercial Tire Systems. “DuraSeal Technology is the industry’s first and only built-in tire sealant, and is Mid-America Trucking Show attendees drove 367 nail designed for multiple punctures while holes into a Goodyear G394 SST wide-base trailer tire maintaining tire pressure.” DuraSeal is a yellow, gel-like rubber at the tire manufacturer’s booth — without any impact compound that instantly seals puncon tire inflation. 5:10 PM

Crushing, Screening & Recycling Section Superior Introduces Track-Mounted Mobile Pivot Base Superior Industries has a new option for maximum conveyor mobility. The track-mounted mobile pivot base, when applied with the TeleStacker conveyor (or other conveyor types) delivers free-ranging conveyor movement for increased on-site or transfer point mobility; or for increased flotation and total mobility on low pressure soils — all while reducing the need for haul trucks and loaders, additional labor and material handling, or other costly loading and unloading systems. Requiring no external power, the mobile pivot base is selfcontained and powered by an onboard 48 hp (35.7 kW) Deutz diesel engine with a 30-gal. (113.5 L) fuel and hydraulic oil tank. Featuring wireless remote control operation, the unit travels on two heavy-duty, hydraulic-drive rubber tracks. For greater stability and maximum flotation, the tracks are almost 9-ft. (2.7 m) in length, more than 40-percent longer than comparable units. An ability to maximize speeds for either the lower or higher range, allows precise control to link up to a feed point, or quicker travel from point to point within the site, according to the manufacturer. The mobile pivot base is engineered with a two-axis gim-

bal, which provides maximum stability and rotational freedom on uneven ground or rugged terrain, while eliminating any stress to the conveyor structure and frame. The new track-mounted mobile pivot base delivers increased mobility in a variety of applications and industries — and certainly anywhere where low pressure soils require greater flotation and traction. The unit is ideal for the optimum mobility desired in gold and copper heap leach opera-

tions. For barge and ship load/unload operations, its transfer point mobility allows it to work in conjunction with a tripper system, thus eliminating the need for large stationary shiploader systems. It also is suitable for dirt moving applications, or for roller compacted concrete (RCC) site mobility. For more information, call 320/589-7085 or visit www.superior-ind.com.

Atlas Copco Introduces HB 4100 Heavy Breaker Atlas Copco’s addition to its heavy hydraulic breaker line, the HB 4100 has a service weight of 9,039 lbs. (4,100 kg) — designed for carriers in the 88,185- to 154,324-lb. weight class — but is as powerful as other, much heavier breakers, according to the manufacturer. “The improvement is considerable,” explained Keith Becker, Atlas Copco product development specialist of hydraulic breakers. “We were able to achieve doubledigit percentage increases in power and efficiency while holding on to our known reliability.” Reduced weight and better performance means that similar results can be achieved with a smaller hydraulic breaker. A lighter breaker also means that a smaller excavator can be used, saving both investment and operating costs. “The return on investment is many times greater than the pure acquisition costs. The

reduction of total cost of ownership conserves resources such as man hours and fuel. The HB 4100 does this with its durability and simple maintenance concepts,” Becker said. Another improvement to the HB 4100 hydraulic breaker is a guide system that makes the breaker more stable and resilient. “Hydraulic breakers are ultimately subjected to use under the most extreme conditions,” Becker added. “A new cover plate for the retaining bars offers more protection in the lower part of the breaker. This area receives the most wear and tear, especially on demolition jobs. The HB 4100 also has increased wear protection at the bottom of the case, which has proven its worth with all heavy hydraulic breakers from Atlas Copco.” The new HB 4100 also includes the following standard features of the Atlas Copco heavy hydraulic breaker series:

• The VibroSilenced system protects operators against noise and vibrations. • PowerAdapt switches the breaker off in the event of a hydraulic overflow. • AutoControl adjusts the blow frequency and blow energy to match the hardness of the material. • ContiLube II is an integrated, automatic lubrication system. • StartSelect allows the operator to influence the startup and shutdown behavior of the hydraulic breaker. • The optional DustProtector protects the lower part of the hydraulic breaker from dust and rock particles. The HB 4100 hydraulic breaker is suitable for secondary and primary rock breaking in quarries, demolition of concrete, steel and pavement, trenching, dredging, tunneling and foundation work. ABC Lauds Court Decision to Block NLRB Poster Rule Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) celebrated the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit decision to grant an injunction in the legal challenge against the National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) “Notification of Employee Rights” notice posting rule. Considered a major victory for ABC, the NLRB’s “Notification of Employee Rights” notice posting rule’s compliance date of April 30 is no longer in effect, as the injunction places the rule on hold while the court considers the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace’s appeal of the U.S. District Court’s unsatisfactory ruling. “For the last several months, ABC has vigorously fought NLRB’s politically motivated policies that threaten to paralyze the construction industry in order to benefit the special interests of politically powerful unions,” stated ABC Vice President of Federal Affairs Geoff Burr. “The NLRB’s notice posting rule is a perfect example of how the pro-union board has abandoned its role as a neutral enforcer and arbiter of labor law.” The April 17 decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit follows the decision issued by the U.S. District Court for South Carolina, stating that the NLRB does not have the statutory authoriity to require business owners to post a biased poster.

MacKinnon Equipment & Services Promotes Three

John Hilberling has been promoted to vice president.

Alex MacKinnon (L) is the new senior vice president; Stacey Hansen is now vice president of marketing.

MacKinnon Equipment & Services Founder and CEO, A.D. “Sandy” MacKinnon and President John Christiansen announced that the company has recently promoted three team members. Alex MacKinnon Alex MacKinnon has been promoted to senior vice president of the company. MacKinnon has worked with the company for more than 20 years. In 1982, he began working part-time during his summer breaks from high school when his father, Sandy, purchased the company. Over the years, he has worked as an industrial salesperson and general manager of the Tampa and Orlando dealerships. “Alex has truly demonstrated his leadership abilities by simultaneously building the JCB construction equipment business while maintaining our Yale industrial equipment market share,” commented President John Christiansen. “He has built an outstanding team in both Tampa and Orlando through his mentoring and we are seeing the results in our sales activity.”

Stacey Hansen Stacey Hansen has served as the marketing manager since February 2010 and has been promoted to vice president of marketing. Founder and CEO “Sandy” MacKinnon commented, “Stacey took the lead role in the rebranding of the company from Yale Lift Trucks to MacKinnon Equipment & Services. From the logo design and brand messaging, communications, and the design of all collateral — the project was seamless.” Hansen continues to use her expertise in all departments of the company and has marketing responsibilities for all four divisions including Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, and Tifton. “I believe that hiring, mentoring, and retaining the right people has been the key to our success,” MacKinnon added. “We continue the strong philosophy of promoting from within and this announcement confirms the strong beliefs that are the underpinning of our company. These individuals epitomize our beliefs. Every day they demonstrate their leadership skills as well as live by the company core values.”

John Hilberling John Hilberling has been promoted to vice president. Hilberling began working with the company in 2004 as an industrial salesperson. In 2010, he was promoted to general manager of the Orlando division. “John has been a star in our company since he was a salesperson in Orlando selling dozens of used forklifts,” Christansen said. “He grew the business in that market and has helped to improve the Orlando operations tremendously.”

About MacKinnon Equipment & Services MacKinnon Equipment & Services, formerly known as Yale Lift Trucks of Florida and Georgia has been selling, servicing, renting, and repairing forklifts since 1982. The company has been named a Yale Dealer of Excellence for 16 years. In March 2010, the dealer added JCB construction equipment to its product line under a division named JCB of Florida and South Georgia. It was named JCB New Dealer of the Year in 2010 for its outstanding performance.

Renovations Prove Positive...

Hensel Phelps Given Grand Award for Pentagon Project Arlington’s Pentagon renovation project was the most significant construction projects of 2011, the Associated General Contractors of America announced. As a result, the project’s contractor, Hensel Phelps Construction Co., was the grand award winner while 15 other firms received the association’s Alliant Build America Award in other categories. “These projects demonstrate the qualities that have made the construction industry great: hard work, ingenuity and world-class skill, said Kristine Young, the association’s president and the CEO of Des Moines, Iowa-based Miller the Driller. “Contractors like these are not only building exceptional projects, they’re building a better, more prosperous America. Hensel Phelps was tasked with renovating four sections of the Pentagon just three days after the 9/11 attack. The team was confronted with an accelerated schedule, new strin-

gent security upgrades, the need to harden the exterior envelope and the added responsibility of supporting recovery efforts from the attack. The team completed the renovation nearly four years ahead of the original schedule, allowing 25,000 Pentagon employees to continue working with minimal disruption. The Alliant Build America Awards recognize the nation’s most significant construction projects. A panel of judges, representing all areas of construction, evaluated a record number of submissions this year, assessing each project’s complexity, use of innovative construction techniques and coordination with partners, among other criteria. The awards, which were announced during the association’s annual convention in Honolulu, are considered by many to be the most prestigious recognition of construction accomplishments in the United States.

Bobcat Launches ’12 Lineup of Light Construction Products water gasoline direct-drive model delivering 3,500 psi, and two electric models; a direct-drive unit that offers 1,500 psi and a belt-drive model that operates at 3,000 psi.

Bobcat has announced its 2012 lineup of light construction products, featuring a revamped line of air compressors, generators and pressure washers, as well as compaction equipment, including plate compactors and upright rammers. Powered by fuel-efficient, Honda engines, these models are designed to provide reliable performance for job site development and cleanup operations. Air Compressors Three portable air compressor units supported by durable frames and strong cylinders provide power for pneumatic tools. The 8gal. (30 L) models feature cast iron compressors and puncture-proof tires. Two single-stage compressor pump models, including a 5-gal. (19 L) unit offering 4.1 cfm at 100 psi and an 8-gal. model delivering 13.1 cfm at 100 psi, make up the smaller units. Rounding out the air compressor line is an 8-gal. twostage unit that provides 17.2 cfm at 175 psi.

Bobcat has announced its 2012 lineup of light construction products, featuring a revamped line of air compressors, generators and pressure washers, as well as compaction equipment, including plate compactors and upright rammers.

Generators A team of three generators with outputs of 3,000, 4,000 and 7,500 watts provide power for remote electricity generation needs. All models feature low-oil shutdown, large low-tone mufflers to reduce noise and USDA/USFS-approved spark arrestors. The heavy-duty frames increase durability, yet the lightweight design can be easily

wheel- mounted or transferred to vehicles for transporting. Pressure Washers The redesigned tire-mounted Bobcat pressure washer line features two portable cold water gasoline direct-drive models with 3,000 and 3,400 psi, respectively, for routine cleanups and wash jobs. Those units are joined by one portable hot

Vibratory Plate Compactors Engineered with high centrifugal forces, the BC15, BC19 and BC22 single-direction vibratory plate compactors effectively and efficiently compact granular soils and crushed aggregates to depths of 12 to 16.5 in. (30.5 to 42 cm). The units also are equipped with a water sprinkler system with removable water tanks for the compaction of hot mix asphalt. The BC15 delivers 3,400 lbs. of centrifugal force from a compact frame using a 17-by-22-in. (43 by 56 cm) plate. The BC19 has a 20by-22-in. (51 by 56 cm) plate and compacts with 4,000 pounds of centrifugal force. The BC22 has a 22-by-22-in. plate and offers the

highest compaction rate with 5,700 lbs. of centrifugal force. These compaction units range in operating weight from 150 to 220 lbs., allowing them to remain highly maneuverable and portable. Upright Rammers Two upright rammer models, the BR55 and BR72, offer a low center of gravity and a lightweight design for backfilling and narrow trench compaction. The rammers’ impact force is applied to material by a durable steel-plated wooden foot that measures 9 by 13 in. (23 by 33 cm) on the BR55 and 11 by 13 in. (28 by 33cm) on the BR72. The BR55 provides an impact force of 2,600 lbs., while the BR72 delivers 3,400 lbs. of force. Both ramming tools provide powerful compaction in a small, self-balanced design that stands under 44 in. (112 cm) off the ground. For more information, visit www.bobcat.com/LCP.

Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers Closes Deal to Acquire AssetNation Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers has acquired AssetNation Inc., a leading online marketplace and solutions provider for surplus and salvage assets. Ritchie Bros. intends to continue to grow AssetNation’s core business as well as to leverage its e-commerce expertise and technology platform to develop and launch unique new services for equipment owners whose buying and selling preferences may not be met by the company’s live unreserved auctions. AssetNation uses its technology platform, strong management and employee team, deep e-commerce expertise and family of global online marketplaces to support buyers and sellers of surplus and salvage assets. AssetNation is active in a number of industry verticals including energy, fleet and distribution, insurance and government. AssetNation is a privately-held company headquartered in Houston, Texas, with offices in Pittsburgh, Pa., Mexico City, Mex., and London, UK. “We are very excited to be welcoming AssetNation into the Ritchie Bros. family. Our values are aligned and we share the same passion for bringing fairness and transparency to the equipment market,” said Ritchie Bros. Chief Executive Officer Peter Blake. “Our success in building the world’s

largest equipment auction company through our flagship unreserved auctions has given us a unique understanding of the world’s equipment owners. We intend to leverage this market knowledge and the power of our brand not only to fuel the growth of AssetNation’s business, but also to develop additional solutions that will expand our addressable market and help us meet the diverse and evolving preferences of a segment of the equipment market that we have not traditionally reached with our unreserved auctions.” The new solutions Ritchie Bros. plans to develop, along with other capabilities the company will add with partners, will be unique in the equipment industry, according to the company. They will expand the Ritchie Bros. service offering and provide a transparent and efficient way for the nonauction segment of the market to buy and sell equipment. The new services will not be auction services and will align with the company’s mission to create compelling business solutions that enable the world’s builders to easily and confidently exchange equipment. “We believe that adding AssetNation’s best-in-class technology and deep e-commerce expertise and leveraging those

strengths to develop exciting new services will allow us to build on our position as the world’s largest seller of used heavy equipment and trucks and to attract new customers,” added Blake. “We believe this initiative will increase shareholder value by enabling us to create compelling complementary solutions and effectively double our addressable market. “We are fortunate to have a growing and profitable core business and we remain firmly committed to it — we see many years of strong growth in front of us for our flagship unreserved auctions. In fact, almost the entire 1,300 employee Ritchie Bros. team will remain focused on the growth of our core business. “In addition to facilitating the development and launch of our new services, the acquisition is also expected to generate growth for our core unreserved auction business,” said Blake. “Many of AssetNation’s customer relationships exist in industry verticals that are complementary to Ritchie Bros.’ core business, particularly in the energy, fleet and distribution, insurance and government sectors. We believe that a combined service offering will satisfy the needs of these customers more effectively.” Blake and AssetNation Chief Executive

Officer Dave Dawson said the transaction is good not only for customers, but also for employees of both companies. Blake added that he has been very impressed by the quality and depth of the AssetNation team and is looking forward to welcoming all of them to the Ritchie Bros. team. “The acquisition is a validation of AssetNation’s efforts to bring fairness and integrity to the surplus and salvage asset markets and makes good business sense. We have invested over 10 years in developing a robust technology platform for online marketplaces and as part of the Ritchie Bros. team, we will develop and launch exciting new buying and selling solutions for equipment owners in the non-auction segment. In addition, the strength of the Ritchie Bros. brand will enhance the growth of our existing online marketplaces,” Dawson said. Ritchie Bros. has agreed to acquire 100 percent of the issued and outstanding shares of AssetNation in an all cash deal valued at approximately $64 million. The transaction closed on May 15, 2012. AssetNation was purchased from the controlling shareholder Spire Capital Partners, a New York-based private equity firm. For more information, visit www.rbauction.com.

“BUILD A CAREER WITH A ROCK-SOLID COMPANY”

West Baton Rouge Officials Tap Firm to Conduct Study STUDY from page 1

The proposed toll road, or connector route, initially would consist of two lanes able to handle about 12,000 vehicles per day, he said. Additional lanes could be added as traffic volume increases, Berthelot added. Jonathon Hart, project manager with CDM Smith, said the “investment grade” study will consist of a comprehensive report comprised of travel demand models, analysis on both a toll-free plan and tolled roadway, more than 400 surveys polling residents on how much they are willing to pay to use the alternative route and a detailed financial model. “We’re trying to determine if there is sufficient demand that will generate enough revenue to support the endeavor,” Hart said. “It will be important to determine how much it’s worth to folks to save 10 minutes on their travel time, for example.” Berthelot said the study’s financial data also would help planners determine whether the parish would be able to build the connector route through bond-issued funds or with the help of a private investor.

“If it’s short of our estimates, we’ll have to figure out any gaps where the parish may need to come in and supplement funds,” he said. A private contractor could agree to cover construction costs and recoup its money through tolls during several decades of ownership, he added. Control of the route and its revenue would then be passed on to the parish, which would then start receiving revenue from the toll road. Although it has been a rough road to get to this point, Gary Spillman, chairman of the Parish Council, said Berthelot still has “100 percent” of the council’s support and that council members are hoping the study’s findings will keep the project moving forward as it originally was planned. “Everything has told us this will probably be a private/public venture [and] at some point in time the parish would own it,” Spillman said. “We’ll have revenue coming in off this thing in the future if it works out the way we’re seeing it.”

Stanton Systems Cleans Up the Big Iron With Monster Wash By Jennifer Rupp CEG CORRESPONDENT

Over the past 20 years, Stanton Systems of Ivyland, Pa., has developed a number of power washing systems to accommodate everything from tractor trailers to military tanks. Its latest invention is the Monster Wash — aimed at offhighway and mine trucks — which guarantees a complete undercarriage cleansing in less than 30 seconds. “A couple of years ago, I was contacted by a construction company who needed a way to wash large dump trucks,” explained Dennis Stanton, owner of Stanton Systems. Though Stanton didn’t have a solution readily at hand, he accepted the challenge of designing one and thus, the Monster Wash was born. The first Monster Wash installation was for Flatiron Inc. in Calaveras Dam, Calif., in 2011. The construction company was replacing the dam there and wanted the ability to wash their trucks on site. The Monster Truck Wash is now a permanent fixture there. The largest Monster Wash is able to wash machines weighing up to 680 tons (617 t). “The Monster Wash gets all of the mud off underneath the vehicles and allows the maintenance crew to see the parts that may need attention,” noted Stanton. “This is the number

1 benefit.” Another benefit of removing mud with the Monster Wash is that the mud will not build up and prevent the mechanical systems from dissipating heat as they’re intended to. “Furthermore, performing a manual wash every week or two can require up to three workers for an 8-hour period. This takes a truck offline for an entire shift and results in lost productivity,” continued Stanton. “The Monster Wash can clean a vehicle in just 30 seconds to 1 minute.” The Monster Wash can be installed on a permanent site, such as a mine, or it can be used portably for large road construction projects. The system takes about two days to install, and a day to remove. Stanton Systems has built its reputation working with companies like Perini and Clark & Turner. Its washes have been installed at a number of large construction sites all over the world. To date, Stanton has upwards of 300 • The wash eliminates the need for costly weekly cleaning of production vehicles units in operation globally. • Improves maintenance and inspections For more information, visit • Can be moved or remain stationary www.tirewash.com/monster-wash/monster• Capable of washing all 700 Series Cat, including the 797F wash.html. • Automatically conveys all mud and piles it for removal (This story also can be found on • Recycles all water using an auto floc to keep it clean and clear Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at • Installs in two days www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) • Five-year warranty CEG Stanton Systems uses the Monster Wash on a Cat 773.

The trade show takes place from

May 29th to June 2nd at the Centro de Exposicoes Imigrantes, Sao Paulo – Brazil. This growth in exhibition area is justified by the success of the event among equipment manufacturers, the growing interest among a number of the sector’s companies in having more room to exhibit their introductions of equipment for construction and mining and, furthermore, to deploy distinctive promotional actions targeting those who visit the show. Among the outstanding attractions promoted by exhibitors are live demonstrations of equipment in the outdoor area of M&T Expo 2012. These promotional initiatives serve as an important marketing tool for brands since they are expected to attract a significant number of visitors who are interested in accompanying these kinds of attractions.
