Kroc Center Construction Begins in Augusta By Cindy Riley

After years of evaluations and a frenetic fundraising campaign, a multimillion dollar Salvation Army complex in Augusta, Ga., is finally getting off the ground. The Kroc Center — named in honor of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc and wife Joan — is under construction, with a targeted completion date in July 2011. In 2004, the estate of Joan Kroc made a $1.7 billion bequest to The Salvation Army earmarked to build and endow a series of Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Centers across the country. Two years later, The Salvation Army in Augusta was awarded one of them. The approved proposal included $33.9 million for construction and another $34 million for an operational endowment, provided Augusta provide significant funding as well. WASHINGTON (AP) The economic recovery is gaining strength from the biggest rise in construction spending in nearly a decade and the 10th straight month of expansion for manufacturers. The two positive reports eased some fears that the debt crisis in Europe might be starting to stunt the U.S. economic rebound. “The recovery is still on track,” said Brian Bethune, a senior economist at IHS Global Insight. While Europe’s troubles will put a drag on profits at U.S. companies that do business overseas, Bethune said, “it’s not going to be a show-stopper.” The burst in April construction spending reported June 1 by the Commerce Department sent a promising signal for an industry that was among the hardest hit during the recession. Michael Robert Sill, former president of Associated Equipment Distributors, passed away May 28, at the age of 78. Mr. Sill grew up in Duluth, Minn., and graduated from Duluth Central High School, and the University of Minnesota, Duluth. After serving in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1953, Mr. Sill went to work for Road Machinery & Supplies Co. (RMS), the company his father started in 1926. In 1956, he moved to Minneapolis to start a RMS branch office and worked for the company until his retirement in 1996. During that time, Mr. Sill played a pivotal role in the success of RMS, help-

ing the company become statewide representative of Clark (wheel loaders), Blaw Knox (asphalt pavers), and Link Belt (cranes and excavators) by 1960. He helped the company grow further as RMS entered the truck equipment business in 1972 and expanded that operation in 1979 when it became the Midwest distributor of Telelect Products and other lines of truck mounted equipment in the Dakotas, Minnesota and Iowa. By 1980, Road Machinery took on representation of Komatsu dozers and by 1985 had added the Komatsu wheel loader and excavator product lines. Komatsu is the second largest manufacsee SILL page 56

Flint Equipment Company announced the acquisition of Metrac Inc. as of June 4, 2010. Flint Equipment Co., which began in 1975 as a John Deere sales and service company in Albany, Ga., has since become a family of companies which also includes Albany Tractor Company and Flint Power Systems operating 26 offices in four states. With the purchase of Metrac, Flint has expanded by six locations and has hired former members of the Metrac management and sales teams. All six locations were open for business on June 7, following system conversions and employee training. Todd Smith has responsibility for Atlanta and Adairsville, Alex McGee will continue to manage Grovetown and also will take over responsibility for the Braselton location, Mike Henderson will continue to manage the Columbus, Ga. locations and Rick Cucci has come on-board to manage the Macon, Ga., location. Chris Cannon, president, purchased Flint Equipment Company in 2002, after spending 19 years as president of a Caterpillar dealership. The purchase of Metrac,

Bobcat and Doosan Hold ‘Dawn of New Day’Demo inLake City,Georgia

obcat and Doosan held a media event June 3 at the Lake City, Ga., branch of Bobcat to introduce several new models to the press and sales representatives. The event, coordinated by Two Rivers Marketing in Des Moines, Iowa, was titled “The Dawn of a New Day for Doosan and Bobcat” and was packed with machine and attachment presentations and plenty of time for hands-on machine demo time. Some machines displayed to the media are yet to be introduced for sale.

A packed busload of media representatives converged on Lake City, Ga., and the branch facility of Bobcat of Atlanta, which hosted this year’s Bobcat Doosan new product presentations and demonstrations.

During the product presentations, Bobcat’s product marketing manager, Bryan Zent, opens up a Bobcat E45 compact excavator to show the total accessibility of the machine’s components. Showing the versatility of a Bobcat E35 with a rotating grapple attachment, which is a perfect match for placing landscape boulders, is Jason Buchholz, excavator product trainer of Bobcat, West Fargo, N.D.

Doosan Sales Training Manager Bill Metzgar (R), based in Atlanta, Ga., provides final instructions to one of the press representatives on operating the recently introduced Doosan DL 420 wheel loader. Boasting more power and other upgrades, the new DL420 now replaces the DL400 model. Barnhart Agrees to Purchase Powell Crane Rental Division Barnhart Crane & Rigging and Powell Companies have reached a definitive agreement under which Barnhart will purchase Powell’s crane rental division, which has locations in Knoxville and Johnson City, Tenn. Powell’s crane rental division has served the Tri-Cities and surrounding areas for 40 years. ter campus centers on the one main building and a 10,000 sq. ft. structure that will house the First Stop Family Service Center, which will provide housing, food and clothing assistance, child care needs, as well as veterans and government benefits. In addition, the Kroc Center will include a state-ofthe-art recreational facility with cardio equipment, a pool, aqua therapy, basketball courts, outdoor running trails and studio space for yoga and aerobics. It also will serve as a center for the arts, with a 400-seat theater complete with an orchestra pit, available for rehearsals and performances. Music classrooms, office, meeting and storage space for local arts groups are included in the plans as well. The Kroc Center also will conduct weekly worship services. “It’s extremely fulfilling, because this is definitely one of the largest projects going on in this area,” said Salvation Army Community Relations Director Derek Dugan. “We’re at just over 20 percent of completion right now. So far there haven’t been any rain delays or surprises, other than having to reroute a sewer line. I can watch the progress each day right from my office window, and it’s very rewarding to see what’s happening.” The Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center contains more than 100,000 sq. ft. of programming space, including a 77,000 sq. ft. complex situated on a 17-acre site in the mill community of Harrisburg, Ga. The total investment, including a permanent operating endowment, will be $98 million. When finished, the Center will provide facilities, programs and services for youngsters, adults and senior citizens. Putting People to Work “The Kroc Center is an extremely important project for Augusta and the Central Savannah River Area from a construction standpoint,” explained Chuck McRee, director of pre-construction services for general contractor RWAllen LLC , headquartered in Augusta, Ga. “It’s putting local contractors to work in a very difficult economic time. Right now the project team is performing very well and is currently on schedule. We broke ground February 15, 2010 and will complete the project in July 2011.” McRee added, “We are excited and proud to be a part of helping the Salvation Army expand their mission to serve the community, and to be a part of Augusta’s revitalization efforts.There are several aspects to this project.” “The First Stop Village, which is located on the same property as the Kroc center, consists of several relocated house structures. There’s a new 12,000 square foot building to host various social service representatives. The major structure onsite is the Kroc Center itself, which is approximately 70,000 square

feet. The facility houses an indoor/outdoor water park/pool, weight training areas, gymnasium and community events hall, along with a commercial kitchen and administrative space.” One of the biggest challenges of the project, said McRee, is the construction of the water park/pool. “The water park includes a slide feature that exits and re-enters the building and empties into the indoor pool. The location and coordination of this slide feature is extremely critical. The pool subcontractor also wants the structure completed prior to their mobilization so that all the other trades are out of the way for the pool/slide installation.”

Equipment on the project includes all-terrain forklifts, along with hydraulic excavators, tractor pulled scrapers, self-propelled scrapers and heavy dump trucks. Various personnel lifts also will be used to access elevated work. “The Center is being constructed on vacant property and there should be no impact on traffic other than some minor traffic control issues in areas where we are making curb cuts onto Broad Street and Eve Street,” McRee continued. The most timeconsuming operation on the project will be CMU and brick masonry construction, along with completion of the stainless steel pool/slide/water park features.” “The building, which will have a brick veneer finish, is a single story structure consisting of load bearing CMU masonry with steel trusses and steel bar joists. The roof is a combination of metal roof panels and a single-ply roof system,” concluded McRee. Mid-State Masonry Contractors Inc., Columbia, S.C., serves as a subcontractor for the project. “We started work at this site about seven weeks ago,” explained Mid-State Masonry owner Joel Temples. “One thing that has been a great advantage to us has been the use

Frank-Lin Excavating Cleans Up Kennedy Space Center By Angela B. Hurni CEG CORRESPONDENT

NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida has been the departure gate for every American-manned space mission and numerous scientific spacecraft for more than 40 years. Over the years, it has been home to popular ventures such as the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. As the workhorse of the space center, the payload processing facility is an important part of any space operation. One such payload processing facility is the vertical processing facility (VPF), which is currently being demolished by Melbourne, Fla.-based Frank-Lin Excavating Inc., as part of a demolition contract that will take down several structures at KSC. Speegle Construction II Inc., Cocoa, Fla., is the prime contractor on the project with its president, Lu Anne Willis, directly involved with the project on a daily basis. Sunrise Systems of Brevard Inc., Cocoa, Fla., is the abatement contractor with Vice President Mark Ancona directly supervising the project. Frank-Lin Excavating is the demolition subcontractor and began work on the $710,000 contract on Jan. 19. In addition to demolition of the VPF, which has hosted many popular assemblies including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Mars

Reconnaissance Orbiter, other structures to be demolished include the original mission control building, according to Pete Charamut, president of Frank-Lin Excavating. “The VPF is the first shuttle-related facility to be demolished,” explained Charamut. “The building was removed from service somewhere in 2006.” The VPF was designed to accommodate all vertically processed payloads and consists of an environmentally-controlled high bay and airlock and single-story support facilities along the sides of the high bay. Dimensions include a high bay area with a ceiling height of 105 ft. (32 m) and usable floor space measuring 10,153 sq. ft. (914 sq m). Equipment enters the airlock through a door that is 71 ft. (22 m) tall and 24 ft. (7.3 m) wide. Additionally, access to the high bay from the airlock is through a door that is 71 ft. (22 m) tall and 38 ft. (11.6 m) wide. The facility also contains two payload workstands with six fixed platforms that provide access to the payloads in the high bay. SECTION Bomag Asphalt Pavers Feature Low-Profile Engine Hood The redesigned BF814 and BF815 pavers from Bomag now feature a low-profile engine hood for improved operator visibility. Both the engine and hood have been lowered 6 in. (15 cm) to give the operator a better view of both sides of the machine. Built with UNIMAT 2 screed assemblies, the BF814 and BF815 offer 8- to 14-ft. (2.4 to 4.2 m) and 8- to 15-ft. (2.4 to 4.5 m) standard paving widths, respectively. The new pavers are able to handle a wide variety of applications — from paving secondary roads and city streets to small asphalt repair and resurfacing jobs. Additionally, the screed

extensions are hydraulically controlled, allowing operators to change paving widths “on-the-go” within the entire paving range. Though primarily intended for commercial paving jobs, BF814 and BF815 offer mainline paver performance and features. Powered by 85-hp (63 kW), water-cooled Cummins turbo diesel engines, the BF814 and BF815 offer production not typically found with comparable-class pavers. Combined with a load-sensing hydraulic system that delivers power only when needed, the pavers can maintain impressive paving speeds up to 180 ft. (55 m) per

minute and travel speeds up to 360 ft. (110 m) per minute, all while remaining fuel efficient. The screed design on the BF814 and BF815 utilizes a formed leading edge that maximizes material flow and makes it possible to pave at depths ranging from 0 to 6 in. (0 to 15 cm). The screed can be crowned or inverted up to 2 in. (5 cm) for maximum paving control, and is equipped with a vibrator and propane heaters to assure consistent material flow. Designed to provide steady and reliable material delivery at all paving widths, the augers are reversible and can be controlled automatically or manually. Both pavers feature a low-deck configuration with dual operator’s stations to simplify control and increase visibility. They can be operated from either side of the platform, or both at the same time. Additionally, machine controls are laid out for maximum operator comfort and ease of use, according to the manufacturer. Featuring 8-ton (7.2 t) capacity dual-slat conveyor systems, the hoppers on the BF814 and BF815 can be raised more than 6-ft. (1.8 m) high for complete access to the crawler system undercarriage. This simplifies required maintenance and cleaning, while allowing for conveyor and track-chain adjustment without having to crawl underneath the paver. New service entry points make for easy access to the paver’s engine. Maintenance concerns also are reduced with the addition of track fenders as standard equipment. By keeping the tracks clean, the fenders help reduce excess wear to the track assembly. The tracks are self-cleaning with sealed rollers, while both the drive and idler sprockets are heat treated to prevent wear. Furthermore, screed wear plates on both the main screed and extensions are constructed of heavy-duty, abrasion-resistant 400 brinell hardness steel, which bolt-on for easy replacement. The BF814 and BF815 are available with Topcon’s System Five Screed Automation. Using a “non-contacting” sonic sensor system, Screed Automation allows for paving without cumbersome skis or string lines and provides joint matching without actually contacting any surfaces. Other optional equipment includes a swivel-mounted hydraulic tow-type truck hitch with bumper rollers, ditch plates, failsafe brakes, working lights and a simple Moba automatic joint matcher system. essary for the application, resulting in greater fuel economy and quieter operation, according to the manufacturer. The CR552 paver provides up to a 50 percent greater footprint than other pavers for improved traction. Its heavy-duty rear drive motor offers increased draw-bar pull for increased tractive effort. Contractors can further improve draw-bar pull by up to 50 percent over normal two-wheel drive systems by equipping the paver with the front wheel drive assist option. “With the CR552, contractors get the low cost and higher speeds of a rubber tire paver without sacrificing traction,” said Bill Rieken, paver applications specialist of Terex Roadbuilding. The paver is available in both traditional slat conveyor (CR552) and Remix auger delivery system (CR552RX) configurations. The Remix Anti-Segregation System features two sets of two counter-

rotating augers in the hopper to aggressively reblend material. The augers uniformly draw down material from all areas of the hopper to reduce occurrences of both material and thermal segregation. This leads to a more homogeneous texture and consistent temperatures across the mat, allowing rollers to readily achieve final spec densities, according to the manufacturer. The cooling system keeps the CR552 running cooler and the engine compartment cleaner for optimum reliability. The singlewidth, triple-element radiator efficiently cools engine water, charge air and hydraulic oil, while the hydraulically driven, variablespeed cooling fan turns only as fast as necessary to improve fuel economy and reduce noise levels. Cooling air is drawn from above the hood rather than ground level for cleaner air quality and exists primarily through the front grill,

resulting in a pressurized engine compartment that reduces debris infiltration. Unlike pavers with transverse mounted engines, the CR552’s air flow and engine mounting is less likely to affect sonic grade control systems with waves of hot air. The Terex CR552 paver features the frame raise and three-point suspension systems. The frame raise system raises and lowers the rear of the paver, which allows the operator to fine-tune the head of material at the spreading augers, reducing segregation. By isolating the frame from the drive system, three-point suspension essentially “floats” the pavers over subbase irregularities, maintaining consistent material feed height at the screed. A proportional steering system is available for the CR552 rubber tire paver. This system enhances maneuverability by holding a tighter turning radius and is essen-

tial when paving with material transfer devices. Applied in three stages — low, medium and high — the system is controlled by a toggle switch on the operator’s console. As the steering wheel is turned when the toggle switch is at medium setting, the proportional steering system gradually decreases the signal to the inside drive wheel and increases the signal to the outside tire. This helps maneuverability by allowing the paver to better hold the line, whether paving straight or in cul-de-sacs. Contractors can equip the CR552 paver with three different screed models — the diesel Fastach 10, electric VersaScreed 210 and the electric or diesel Stretch 20. Depending on screed model, this 10-ft. (3 m) paver delivers mainline paving widths reaching 30 ft. (9.1 m) at depths up to 12 in. (30.5 cm). For more information, visit www.terex.com.
