Thirty-four hundred crypts are being installed and once that’s all done, burials will simply involve moving the topsoil and lifting the lid up.

Salisbury National Cemetery also has another project going on, the installation of 1,000 aboveground niches for the cremation remains. These are contained in a wall with slots.
— 1,500 per acre — are being installed, ironically, to expand the life expectancy of the cemetery. Conventional grave sites are five by 10-foot plots which, if it is to be for a veteran and spouse, the grave will be dug seven feet
deep into which a vault will be placed and then when the spouse dies the grave will be reopened and the vault for the spouse placed on top to close it up. With this new crypt project everything is going to be
installed beforehand. Thirty four hundred crypts are being installed and once that’s all done, burials will simply involve moving the topsoil and lifting the lid up. Currently the cemetery is see CEMETERY page 26
Terex Linked to History AGC Asks Obama to Reconsider Quotas For the Space Shuttle Discovery, it was a journey of nearly 150 million miles that ended at Washington Dulles International Airport. Discovery’s maiden voyage was made on Aug. 30, 1984, and it flew 39 successful missions into space over its 27plus years of service. It was the most traveled and storied of all the space shuttles in NASA’s fleet. On April 17, 2012, Discovery made its final voyage atop its Boeing 747 Shuttle see SHUTTLE page 22
Enterprise, via the 747 SAC, took off from Dulles on April 27 for its final home in New York City and landed at JFK International Airport. At the same time, the CC 2800-1 crane components were derigged and loaded onto trucks and trailers heading for New York.
The Associated General Contractors of America joined with 10 other national business associations in calling on the Obama administration to reconsider a series of new hiring mandates it wants to impose on contractors working on federal projects. Association officials noted that the government has failed to produce any data justifying the very costly and incredibly prescriptive new hiring mandates. “The administration is getting ready to impose a tremendous new regulatory burden on thousands of employers to fix a problem that doesn’t appear to exist,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “The administration is trying to mandate away the symptoms of a broader problem: a stagnant economy that has left too many Americans out of work for too long.” see AGC page 24

A
steady stream of customers and guests made their way to the Ditch Witch of Tennessee Open House on June 15 at the company’s Nashville area branch. Dealer principal Ray Romano purchased the company on Sept. 1, 2010, and soon after added the Kubota line. Romano said, “The open house event was held specifically for providing more product awareness for the Kubota line.” Kubota representatives were on hand to assist with the day’s activities. Martin’s Barbecue, famous throughout the south catered the event. Special low pricing on new and used machines and reduced rental rates were available the entire day and prizes were awarded throughout the day as well.
(L-R): As the open house was under way, the parts counter was still very active as Joe Hunt and Josh Graham of Ditch Witch of Tennessee address the needs of Joe Maturo, American Underground, Rockmart, Ga.
While looking over a new Ditch Witch FX30 vacuum excavator, Jerry Butterball (L), Appalachian Pipeline, Hendersonville, Tenn., catches up with his Ditch Witch of Tennessee sales representative, Doug Stephens.
Finished with their preparations for the event and awaiting the first wave of guests (L-R) are Ditch Witch of Tennessee’s owner Ray Romano, Sales Manager Doug Champion, and Kubota Sales Specialist Gary Herron. Gary Herron (L), Ditch Witch of Tennessee, and Cary Frazier, Cary Frazier General Contractors, Rockville, Tenn., discuss the features of a Kubota KX121-3 Super Series compact excavator. A vast array of Kubota machines was on display and specially priced for the one-day event.
Lots of new Ditch Witch machines were on display including the impressive RT115 Quad equipped with a Hydra Wheel 42-inch rock saw.
Enjoying the day’s events and checking out a Kubota R420S compact wheel loader on display (L-R) are Bobby Gaines, Stansell Electric, Nashville, Tenn.; Mike Thilmony, Ditch Witch of Tenn.; and Bobby Couts, also of Stansell Electric.
(L-R): McGuire Brown and his dad, Pete Brown of AAA Plumbing, Old Hickory, Tenn., talk to Dean Terry, Ditch Witch of Tennessee, about a Kubota B26 tractor loader backhoe of interest.

Women Entering Construction Growing in Numbers By Bryna Godar MINNESOTA DAILY
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) With light-rail construction engulfing the University of Minnesota, campus is covered in hard hats and neon vests. But few of those are worn by female workers. Women have joined the construction industry as laborers, engineers and managers, but the field is still largely dominated by men. “We’re still a minority, but not as much as we used to be,” said light-rail construction worker Jenellen Gallatin, who has been working in construction for 12 years. “I like physical work, so for me, it works,” she told the Minnesota Daily. In Minneapolis, 17.6 percent of light-rail workers are minorities, and 6.3 percent are female, with some people factoring into both percentages. These numbers are near the project goal of employing 18 percent minority and 6 percent female workers. Christine Beckwith, a graduate of the university, is the deputy project director for the light-rail project at the Metropolitan Council. She is the highest-ranking woman on the project as one of the top four officials in the project office.
“I remember going to pre-construction meetings and running the meetings and people being kind of surprised at my role on it,” she said. “They just thought I was there to take notes or something.” Overall, though, she and other female workers said they don’t face discrimination. “I’ve never had a problem with any of the guys,” Gallatin said. Because construction began as, and is, a male-dominated profession, Gallatin said women going into the field can’t be sensitive to the atmosphere. “If you can’t handle it, get out. This is their field.” In 2009, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that women in construction were “substantially underrepresented.” In 2010, women comprised approximately 9 percent of workers in the construction industry, according to the National Association of Women in Construction. This includes all occupation sectors in construction, like sales and office jobs where women made up 76 percent of the sector. Lisa Becker, a laborer in construction for 13 years, said, “Along the way there’s a few glitches, but those get resolved pretty quickly.” Becker became the first female labor fore-
man at her previous job at Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant in Red Wing, Minn. “There was some peacocking about that at first,” she said. “It was just the fact that I got picked over the boys.” All the women interviewed for this story said workers have to prove themselves in the field regardless of gender. “If you go from one place to the next place to the next place, you [got to] start all over at square one and let them know that you’re not an idiot; you know the right end of the wrench to pull,” Becker said. Early in her career, Beckwith said she was filling up heavy buckets and had to carry them with another female coworker. Workers at the site were making fun of them for not being able to carry the bucket alone. She thought it was because she was a female, but she said it really was because she was “green.” “You’re new, they got to tease you about something,” said Kelly Hovde, assistant project manager and field engineer for Meyer Contracting. Workers said everyone jokes and teases, and it’s important to know the difference between that and harassment. “Some people do not pay attention to the
nuance of voice, and that’s where they’re thinking it’s derogatory or whatever,” Gallatin said. “But it’s not — they’re joking.” It’s illegal to harass a woman by making comments about women in general, but the law doesn’t prohibit simple teasing, offhand comments or isolated incidents that are not very serious, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The line between teasing and harassment, however, can sometimes be difficult to discern. “I’ve heard of females walking by guys, and they’re telling a joke, and they say it’s sexual harassment,” Gallatin said. “You should not have that sensitive of a nature if you’re coming into something like that.” “There’s a difference between by you and at you,” said Justin Dean, a supervisor with Ames/McCrossan Joint Venture — the contractor team building the Minneapolis portion of the light rail. Despite slight differences in treatment, the women said they enjoy working construction and don’t mind working in a male-dominated profession. “You have to be assertive,” Beckwith said.

A Lifeline…
AED Tells Congress Shale Means Growth, Jobs for Industry Shale energy development has been a lifeline for construction companies and suppliers still struggling to recover from the recession — this was the message Mike Quirk, vice president of product support at Wagner Equipment Co. in Aurora, Colo., told a congressional committee May 2. Quirk was testifying at a U.S. House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee Energy & Mineral Resources Subcommittee field hearing in Denver on the jobs and energy security implications of hydraulic fracturing. Appearing in his capacity as 2012 vice chairman of Associated Equipment Distributors (AED), an international trade association representing construction equipment companies, Quirk spoke about the effect that shale energy production has had on his business and other local equipment dealers. “Shale energy development has allowed Wagner Equipment Co. to begin to recover from the recession and start to grow once again,” Quirk said. “While the equipment markets on which we previously depended have still not recovered, demand from nontraditional markets, such as hydraulic fracturing, have helped us get our company back on solid footing.” An informal AED survey of equipment distributors operating in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico underscores the impact shale energy and hydraulic fracturing have had on the equipment industry in general. Eleven AED members reported combined 2011 equipment sales of $230.5 million associated with shale energy. The average revenue related to this activity was $21 million per company. AED estimates the total direct and indirect economic impact of the equipment revenues from shale energy activity reported by the survey respondents at more than $735 million. As might be expected, that new equipment market activity is creating and sustaining many jobs. Survey respondents report that, on average, 29 percent of their personnel in Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, and/or Utah are somehow supporting shale energy. “Thanks to demand from the energy sector, Wagner Equipment Co. has rehired all the available technicians we laid off since 2009. In fact, we are working with local community colleges to train more qualified workers to meet our hiring needs, an unthinkable proposition just a few years ago,” Quirk said. Quirk warned lawmakers against federal interference with this booming sector. “In order for the economy to reap the full reward from shale energy, the federal government must refrain from micromanaging the industry and defer to state regulators,” Quirk said. Manitowoc Opens New Product Verification Center A crane can only be as good as the sum of its parts. That’s why Manitowoc Cranes has built a multimillion dollar, testing facility to rigorously scrutinize the components that go into its cranes. The Product Verification Center at Manitowoc’s Shady Grove, Pa., facility will help produce stronger, more-reliable cranes. By allowing rigorous testing of component performance and working life cycles, it will give Manitowoc engineers new insight into the anticipated performance of cranes in the field. It also will speed up the product development phase for new designs, reduce warranty claims and on-site stoppages, and allow for the direct comparison of supplier components, according to the manufacturer. Eric Etchart, Manitowoc’s president and general manager, said the Product Verification Center represents an investment in quality. “For Manitowoc and its customers, this new center marks the beginning of an exciting phase in modern crane design and testing,” he said. “By meticulously inspecting the quality and endurance of individual components, we will be able to reach new, unprecedented levels of quality. We believe there’s no other facility like this in the crane industry.” The center features a number of technologies that will deliver detailed pictures of anticipated component performance. Among the most significant are: • A severe environment test (HALT) chamber that can mimic extreme temperature swings and test component reaction to continuous vibration. • A walk-in temperature and humidity chamber that’s large enough to fit entire crane cabs, consoles and power boxes. • A four-channel structural test system with advanced feedback control. • An electrical and software testing lab. • Imaging systems for forensic analysis, including a thermal imaging camera and microscopes. • A materials lab with a scanning electron microscope, flaw detector and hardness tester. • A cyclic corrosion chamber, which recreates salt water exposure and fog conditions. The Product Verification Center will test designs earlier in the product development process than was previously possible. That means suppliers and their components can be vetted before the products are placed in cranes. Also, the head start allows Manitowoc engineers to discover any potential difficulties at an earlier stage and devise solutions long before equipment reaches job sites. Jim MacIntyre, director of global quality systems of Manitowoc, said the Product Verification Center is already improving crane performance. “It’s still very early, but we’re already seeing some inter-

esting results. For example, we recently used thermal imaging technology when analyzing engine performance on one of our industrial cranes. As a result, we adjusted the design to increase fuel economy and improve productivity,” he said. “In the future, we will be able to replicate this kind of innovation on a much bigger scale.” Alan Calta, director of the Product Verification Center, leads a specially-trained staff of 41 managers, technicians and engineers. The team has fashioned a proprietary verification management system to organize, prioritize, summarize, compare and archive the center’s test results. Additionally, Manitowoc’s experts will be able to develop competitive standards for verification and processes in the future. The new facility allows for the testing of entire cranes, too. Engineers are able to view cranes being tested on one of the

center’s six test pads, for example, and monitor the results in real time. The center’s roof is tall enough to allow for the full extension of crane booms, so engineers can accurately recreate job site conditions. The Product Verification Center took less than a year to build with an aggressive schedule and major push by key individuals from Manitowoc’s plant operations, engineering and purchasing teams. The biggest challenge was recruiting talent for a team that could meet the heavy demands of the product verification requirements. Manitowoc started researching and planning for the center in 2009 as part of its commitment to continuous quality improvement. The company discovered that many of its suppliers weren’t able to test their own products and when they did, the measurements were often incomplete. Driven by the desire to understand as much as possible about each component that goes into a Manitowoc crane, the company decided it should create its own verification facility. Terex, Space Shuttle Share Unique, Historic Relationship SHUTTLE from page 1
Aircraft Carrier (SAC) with much fanfare from onlookers and local, national and international media. Reports focused on its final flight and place in space exploration history. Battered and scorched from dozens of space missions, Discovery replaced the pristine Space Shuttle Enterprise at the Smithsonian Institution’s James S. McDonnell Space Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Before being towed from Dulles to its final exhibit place, Discovery had to be hoisted from its carrier and its landing gear lowered into place one final time. How is the shuttle removed from its 747 SAC perch when it’s not at a space center? That is where the mainstream media’s coverage and fanfare ends, and the work for South Kearny, N.J.-based J. F. Lomma Inc. and the Terex CC 2800-1 crawler crane begins. Historic Picks Under the cover of night on April 19, 2012, and slipping into the early morning hours of April 20, Lomma and the United Space Alliance work crews methodically hoisted the 196,400 lb. (89,085 kg) shuttle off of the 747 SAC. “You cannot describe what it’s like to be part of space shuttle history,” said Frank Signorelli, crane and rigging manager of J. F. Lomma Inc. Josh Barnett, field service representative of Terex Cranes, who was on site to support Lomma on the lift, added, “It was a one-ofa-kind experience.” Serving the New Jersey and New York area as well as markets from coast to coast and select international markets, Lomma has seen its share of historic work. This includes supplying crane and rigging services for

construction work that continues today at the World Trade Center site. For Lomma, planning for this job started nearly two years ago when company officials first considered bidding for the job. NASA was very specific in what equipment was required for the work. “The bid called specifically for the Terex CC 2800-1 as the primary crane to do the pick as well as all of the other supporting cranes and equipment,” said Signorelli. Part of the reason for this lies with NASA’s experience with this crane model for a similar pick decades ago. When the 747 SAC transports the space shuttle to a place other than a space center, there is a need for crane and rigging equipment. “These picks do not happen often, since NASA already has a shuttle removal method in place at each space center,” explained Barnett. In the early 1990s, NASA had the rare need to hoist a shuttle from the 747 SAC,
For the Discovery lift, the CC 2800-1 crawler crane was equipped with a 177-ft. (53.9-m) main boom and a 98-ft. (29.9-m) Superlift mast. It used 352,000 lb. (159,665 kg) of main counterweight with no central ballasts. Superlift counterweight of 275,000 lb. (124,738 kg) was added to the tray 50 ft. (15.2 m) from the crane base.
and a Terex legacy brand was selected for the job. “A Demag 2800 crawler crane was used in that project as the primary crane,” mentioned Jim Creek, Terex Cranes’ senior product manager of crawler cranes — North America. “NASA has a history of successful lifts with this crane.” Staples of the Terex crawler crane line, the CC2800-1 and its predecessor, the CC 2800, have worked on job sites throughout the world for more than 20 years. The CC 28001 offers a 660-ton (600-t) capacity at a 32.8ft. (10-m) radius, more than enough to handle Discovery’s weight. It features a maximum 196.9-ft. (60-m) main boom length and a variable 100-ft. (30.5-m) radius Superlift attachment to boost lift capacities. “Superlift offers an additional 4,000 to 600,000 lb. of counterweight on the tray, which enables the crane to lift more weight further from the crane’s base,” said Creek.
Having the right experience and all the necessary equipment to complete the job, Lomma was awarded the shuttle project. It consisted of not one but two shuttle hoists. The first lifted the Space Shuttle Discovery off of the 747 SAC for the shuttle’s eventual spot at the Smithsonian. The second loaded the Space Shuttle Enterprise onto the carrier, so it could be flown to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. It took Lomma nearly three months to prepare for and arrange the pick. “We had conference calls with NASA two times a week,” said Signorelli. “Communication was often and thorough between our company and NASA.” Lomma purchased the CC 2800-1 ultimately used for the pick about two years ago. It was on rent with a customer in Quebec. Upon returning to the yard, the crane was rigged to make sure the right components were in place for the job. “We ran the crane in our yard,” said Signorelli. “The [IC-1] computer screen is extremely user friendly and self-explanatory. It’s not a complicated crane to operate.” Upon completing the dry run at the yard, Lomma disassembled the crane and sent the components to the job site. Lomma’s crews spent three days at Dulles rigging the CC 2800-1 and a fourth day running through test lifts to make sure everything would go smoothly. Safety and Precision When it came time for the shuttle pick, there was very little left to question. “NASA had everything marked out on the ground — positioning for the Terex crane, the supporting crane and the 747,” explained Signorelli. The CC 2800-1 crawler crane was equipped with a 177-ft. (53.9-m) main boom see SHUTTLE page 60

Salisbury Cemetery Project Highlights Space Conservation CEMETERY from page 1
using more than 800 sites per acre, so with this new development they’ll be gaining between 40 and 50 percent more space, according to John Spruyt. The new configuration will take up only three feet by eight feet of space as opposed to the current five by 10 feet of space in use. “I’ve worked in cemeteries where burials were side by side,” explained Spruyt. “That arrangement is a great waste of space, not a perfect idea. All the cemeteries now are going to using crypts to conserve land.” Salisbury National Cemetery also has another project going on, the installation of 1,000 aboveground niches for the cremation remains. These are contained in a wall with slots. The company heading the project is U.S. Builders Group, Detroit. The Salisbury National Cemetery has a contracting officer based in Washington, D.C., overseeing the whole project. Spruyt oversees the entire Salisbury National Cemetery and is held accountable for what happens at the site. “As long as the contractors and workers are respecting the visitors and the integrity of our funeral services, that’s what I’m concerned about,” added Spruyt. “My role here is to provide dignified burial for our veterans, making sure that none of the contractors interfere with that. There is a specific contracting officer that oversees the contract; I’m basically his eyes and ears because he’s up in Washington. I also make sure everything’s kept neat and clean — and visitors are not interfered with.” Funeral services are conducted every hour on the hour so workers must work carefully around that schedule, according to Spruyt. “They work around us,” added Spruyt. “We don’t work around them and they can work from dawn to dusk. They just started coming on site in December, but haven’t gone full force yet with excavating and all that. As spring and summer come around there will be more construction going on here.” A main challenge is making sure that family funeral services pro-

ceed without any glitches due to the hectic construction about to start. “That’s kind of hard. They’ve got to shut down their equipment while we’re having a service. Some days we’ll have five services, others we’ll have just one and some days we have none.” The project should be completed within one year with the expansion in place by December 2012. All the work should be cleaned up by that time. The original cemetery is on the other side of town, some two miles from this site. The part where Spruyt is situated opened in 1999, though it is part of the original cemetery and located directly behind the VA hospital. “If the VA hadn’t acquired this land, this cemetery would have closed altogether. The old Confederate prisoner of war camp at Salisbury was originally a cornfield and that’s where they buried the dead from the prison. Supposedly 11,000 troops were buried in 18 trenches over there. That is basically an open section marked on both ends by stones labeled ‘unknown.’ They never excavated or exhumed any of those bodies. One trench was exhumed, the number of remains counted in that location and based on 18 trenches they came up with the 11,000 figure; nobody really knows the exact number. Some have come up with 4,000 and the highest estimate is 11,000.” The community is a big advocate for the cemetery, especially the veterans in the area, according to Spruyt. Last fiscal year, which ended September 30, they buried more than 700 veterans and family members. Veterans and their spouses are eligible along with minor children under the age of 21 or under 23 years of age and pursuing a full-time course of instruc-
tion at an approved educational institution. But the majority of the burials done are for veterans and their spouses. The original cemetery across town consists of some 15 acres. Steve Scott of U.S. Builders Group, is the superintendent onsite. U.S. Builders Group started in 1999 as a Service Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business. Though they started out with their main focus being interior finish contractors for the Southeast Michigan area, they’ve expanded their business to include many projects around the United States, including multiple general contractor projects from Michigan and Washington D.C. and even historic sites in Florida and Mississippi. Despite all these farflung projects, the company has as its philosophy to remain customer-focused, giving each project the same attention to detail and quality treatment, no matter how large or small that project may be. “There are some cemetery locations that U.S. Builders Group is involved in where there are up to 30 services per day and you really have to work around them,” said Scott. “But here at the Salisbury National Cemetery it’s not that busy. They average three services per day, usually Mondays and Fridays, with one or two on the weekdays between those two days so it’s not usually too bad here; services are not too long, maybe ten or fifteen minutes long.” They have a flag system in place in which the cemetery will put up a little signal flag when the services first start. Scott explained that they keep an eye out. “When we see that flag go up we shut all of our machinery right down,” he said. “Then when work starts back up
we don’t want to dig out more than we have to, so we do have one of the larger tracked hoe excavators on site. But the mini-excavators are our basic unit, what we really like to dig with around the edges of the crypt fields, that way we don’t have the big bucket on there and the big trench to fill back in.” The soil on this site isn’t too bad, according to Scott. But he recently came from a job in Natchez, Miss., where the soil is extra silty and hard to compact. On the Salisbury National Cemetery job they have only five workers onsite right now. Eventually they will have concrete

work, masonry work and other site work involved. Then they will pick up an additional 10 to 15 workers. Scott’s company is a construction management company, basically arranging for other local subcontractors to do the work with their own equipment. They have nine months to finish this job. “Construction workers are pret-
ty used to working in bad weather so I’m confident we’ll be able to finish things up during that time. The weather here in North Carolina, overall seems pretty nice compared to Michigan. “One of our biggest challenges is making sure we don’t have too much equipment on top of the crypt field. This is why we basically go with the minis and the smaller equipment to do our work. They have the requirement of a 12,000 pound axle load limit on top of the crypts. We were cautious with them. We’ll push dirt on them before we get machinery on top. If we get a bit extra we won’t use to big of a piece of equipment and make sure we have a good cushion underneath us. Usually we use rubber-tracked machinery; that seems to work the best and to spread the load out. “Those crypts are pretty thinwalled concrete and if you hit them with a bucket they’re going to crack. You don’t want to do that. Also we were asked to clear a few trees which were on site as the roots cause havoc with the crypts, trying to get inside the crypts.” Scott has worked on cemetery sites all around the country, including one at Natchez, Miss., where the burial ground is on a bluff 250 ft. above the Mississippi River. They also have had projects in Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Illinois. “I feel it’s an honor to work for the Veterans’ Administration at the cemeteries,” said Scott. “Some people ask me if it’s scary working at night in a cemetery, but I’m pretty used to it now. It doesn’t bother me at all. When we’re doing some heavy excavating and there are services during the day, it’s just a lot easier to come in at night and do the work. “This cemetery is unique in being right next to a medical center and that facility has a lot of traffic associated with it. People are coming in and out of there all day long. It’s easier for us if we’ve got to haul dirt, to do that when there is little traffic around. It is just safer for everyone.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG

There are many reasons why the Powercrusher is a star. The 11 models of crushers and six models of screeners offer capacities ranging from 250 to 500 tons per hour. Other features include: t Jaw crushers that use Quattro Movement, a figure-eight motion that increases feeding capacity and produces a post-crush at the outlet—like two crushers in one. t A pre-screen feature available on the PC 6 model for higher value end product. t Track mounted for mobility and maneuverability in a smaller footprint. t National support for parts and service from Atlas Copco Powercrusher—POWER is just the beginning.

It is this dedication to the customer that has enabled Company Wrench to grow from 1 to 12 locations in 6 years. The number 1 Terex Fuchs equipment distributor award was presented to Company Wrench officials by Terex Construction Americas representatives Dean Barley, Chris Koch and Kristy Jennings in a ceremony held on May 1, 2012, at the distributor’s headquarters location in Carroll, Ohio.
A reception was held after the award ceremony.
The event was attended by Terex Construction Americas representatives, Company Wrench officials and employees as well as local and state dignitaries.
Joining Terex Construction Americas and Company Wrench officials were a host of local and state dignitaries, including representatives from the offices of Gov. John Kasich and Congressman Steve Austria of Ohio’s 7th District. In addition to being named the top Terex Fuchs equipment distributor for 2011, Company Wrench received proclamations from the offices of both Kasich and Austria. From a small initial territory representing Terex Fuchs material handlers, Company Wrench now offers sales and service support for multiple states in the midwestern and southern regions for Terex Fuchs. “This is a well-deserved honor for Company Wrench,” said Chris Koch, divisional sales manager of Terex Construction Americas. “They are a top-notch organization and one of our most dedicated distributors, not only to the product line but, more importantly, to the customer. We congratulate them on their success.” For more information, call 662/393-1800 or visit www.terex.com.

The Grasan KR1010D crushing plant is 12 ft. 6 in. (3.8 m) high and 8 ft. 6 in. (2.6 m) wide, with a highstrength steel frame.
Compact Rubble Crusher Designed for High Mobility The compact Grasan KR1010D crushing plant provides high mobility, sets up ready to run in 15 minutes, operates in tight quarters, and crushes up to 150 tons (136 t) per hour of concrete and asphalt rubble, brick, block and stone. The selfcontained plant is 12 ft. 6 in. (3.8 m) high and 8 ft. 6 in. (2.6 m) wide, with a high-strength steel frame. The crusher is a Hazemag 1010 primary impactor with a 25 in. high by 40 in. (63.5 by 101.6 cm) wide feed opening and hinged inlet hood, hinged split housing, adjustable aprons and large access door. The plant transports over the road fully assembled. To set up the plant onsite, the operator backs it up to a stockpiling conveyor, starts the engine and lowers the hydraulic stabilizing legs (no other support is needed). The plant is powered by a six-cylinder, 240 hp (179 kW) John Deere diesel engine with auto-shutdown gages, criticalduty muffler for quiet operation and a two-year parts and service warranty. The operator’s station and service walkway provide access to the crusher and engine. The heavy-duty grizzly feeder has a direct-coupled hydraulic motor for variable speed control. A bypass section or optional reject belt can be used to remove fine, undersized material. The 36 in. (91 cm) discharge conveyor has heavy belting and special impact loading rails. A primary belt cleaner removes fines to minimize cleanup and a self-cleaning magnet separates mesh and re-bar from crushed materials. Optional Grasan road-portable stockpiling conveyors are powered by the plant’s standard auxiliary hydraulic couplings. The on-plant hydraulic system features easy-change filters and simple controls that are accessible from ground level. For more information, call 419/526-4440 or visit www.grasan.com.

Screen USA Inc. Introduces TROM6090 Trommel Screen Screen USA Inc. has added the TROM6090 to its full line of portable screening equipment. Screen USA Inc. is an American manufacturer of portable screening plants and wood grinders located in Smyrna, Ga., since 1973. Screen USA offers portable shaker screens, trommel screens, starscreens, wood grinders and conveyors. By offering its customers all of the different types of screening technologies, Screen USA is able to provide appropriate screening technologies for the customers’ particular application. According to the owner Rick Cohen, “we sell the customer what he needs to get the job done. “Too many companies sell only one or two technologies and push on the customer what they have in stock or on the yard, not necessarily what they need. “The Screen USA 6090 was designed to fill a gap in our trommel screening line. NPK’S Interchangeable Jaws Offer Improved Results, Cost Savings
Now joining the Models M-20, M-28 and M-38, sized to fit excavators 20 to 55 tons (18 to 50 t), is the new Model M-35. This new model will fit excavators in the 25 to 40 ton (22.7 to 36 t) weight class, and are fitted with the new quick change jaw sets.
NPK Construction Equipment Inc.’s material processors are an efficient solution for concrete, steel and rebar processing, building and bridge demolition and recycling. At demolition sites, effective sizing reduces the number of trips needed to haul away debris providing dramatic savings. When used at recycling plants, NPK material processors quickly remove rebar and reduce large pieces of concrete for faster processing. The availability of three different interchangeable jaw assemblies provides improved results and cost savings when compared to purchasing different attachments to achieve the same results, according to the manufacturer. The S jaw set serves as a primary breaker, the G jaw set as a pulverizer and the K jaw set as a shear. Manufactured from highstrength, abrasion-resistant steel, this rugged design accomplishes trouble-free, extended life with reinforced shields protecting cylinder rods. NPK’s integral hydraulic intensifier system boosts power by amplifying cylinder pressure and reducing cycle time, while providing a greater power-to-weight ratio. The full 360 degree power rotation provides an effective angle of attack for any job wherever the location. For more information, call 800/225-4379 or visit www.npkce.com.
Four outboard shock mounts distribute vibrations evenly while keeping the attachment level, improving compaction efficiency and extending component life.
Three New Doosan Plate Compactors Expand Excavator Versatility Three new plate compactor models expand Doosan excavator versatility and make quick work of restoring trenches. Featuring a flat top mount design, the Doosan plate compactors can easily be mounted to different carriers. The flat-top design allows a “cap” to be added to the attachment based on the specific machine being used. Four outboard shock mounts distribute vibrations evenly while keeping the attachment level, improving compaction efficiency and extending component life. Standard flow controls prevent over-speeding, which can lead to poor compaction and reduce bearing life. Applications for the plate compactor attachments include compacting trenches, footings and slab areas. An excavator-mounted plate compactor attachment provides more powerful compaction force than handoperated compactors and reduces the need for workers in the trench. The PCX64 is approved for the Doosan DX140LC excavator, with a baseplate width of 23 in. (58 cm). The attachment’s dynamic force is 6,400 lbs. and the compaction frequency is 2,000 vibrations per minute (vpm). The PCX114 is approved for the Doosan DX140LC, DX180LC, DX190W, DX210W, DX225LC and DX255LC excavators. It features a baseplate width of 27 in. (68.5 cm), 2,000 vpm frequency and 11,350 lbs. of dynamic force. The PCX220 is approved for the Doosan DX255, DX300, DX350, DX420, DX480 and DX520 excavators. It features a baseplate width of 32 in. (81 cm), 2,100 vpm frequency and 22,000 lbs. of dynamic force. For more information, visit www.doosanequipment.com.

Edge Inverted Log Splitter Automates Back-Breaking Work CEAttachments Inc., a global supplier of attachments and accessories for compact equipment, added the Edge inverted log splitter attachment for skid steer and track loaders. The new standard-flow Edge inverted log splitter attachment is designed to end the back-breaking labor of splitting wood by allowing the operator to remain in the seat and operate all of the controls for lifting, transporting and splitting wood. No need to ever touch a heavy log again. The front of the splitter can be used to push logs and position them for splitting. Lower the inverted log splitter over the log, engage the auxiliary hydraulics and split logs up to 24 in. (61 cm) long right on the ground quickly and effortlessly. The splitter also can be used to lift heavy logs and transport them to another location for splitting. The powerful cylinder on this attachment drives 20 tons of force to its splitting wedge, yet runs on 10 to 20 gpm (38 to 76 Lpm) standard hydraulic flow. The splitter on this attachment also can be unbolted from the quick attach and flipped 180 degrees for upright splitting applications. The new Edge inverted log splitter comes complete with hoses and flat face couplers, ready to split piles of wood in minutes. For more information, call 866/232-8224 or visit www.ceattachments.com.

Blue Diamond Introduces Open Front Brush Cutter
The new Blue Diamond open front brush cutter is based on the current four blade extreme duty brush cutter but uses an open front design with a heavy duty push bar. This commercial grade low flow cutter performs along side high flow cutters. The oversized direct drive unit hosts a 2-5/8 in. (6.6 cm) drive shaft with two bearings submerged in oil. The bi-directional Eaton Char-Lynn motor requires a minimum of 16 gpms (60.5 Lpm) to cut up to 6 in. (15 cm) trees making this unit a high performance unit for low flow skid steers. The wire protection system under the deck prevents down time due to wire and vines by protecting the lower bearing seal. The double edged blades allow the unit to be run one direction for heavy cutting and the other direction for grass. The open back design allows consistent discharge of cut material to prevent bunching, and the chain curtain lays it down for a clean looking finished cut. Meeting Emission Standards...
Chicago Pneumatic Unveils New Compressor The Chicago Pneumatic CPS 750 JD7 Tier IVa rotary screw, portable compressor generates 750 CFM of air at 100 psi. Powered by a 200 hp (149 kW) John Deere six-cylinder diesel engine, the CPS 750 JD7 is Tier IVa compliant and designed for heavy-duty construction environments. The CPS 750 JD7 Tier IVa utilizes a new and improved air end with an advanced rotor profile. This air end has been engineered to reduce the horsepower required to produce the 750 CFM, resulting in better fuel efficiency. The air pressure is adjustable from 58 psi up to 100 psi. The John Deere engine uses exhaust gas recirculation technology to reduce NOx emissions.
The exhaust gases are cooled and reintroduced to the engine cylinders, resulting in lower peak combustion temperature, reducing NOx formation. A particulate filter is then used to remove the increased amount of particulate matter in order to meet the new Tier IVa emission standards. The electronically controlled, watercooled engine, variable speed fan and new Chicago Pneumatic air end reduces fuel consumption to 8.2 gal. (31 L) per hour at 100 percent load — a significant reduction in fuel consumption. In addition, with the 78-gal. (295 L) fuel capacity the operator gets more than a full 8-hour day at full load. The new CPS 750 JD7 Tier IVa fits cleanly into a single-axle, fast-track enclosure. This new sound-dampening enclosure is more compact than competitively sized compressor packages, according to the manufacturer. The CPS 750 JD7 Tier IVa features an Aframe drawbar, surge hydraulic brakes and torsion bar suspension, which provides durability, stability and optimal road performance when in tow. The CPS also is available in a support-

Terex Crane Helps Shuttle Safely Arrive at Final Stop SHUTTLE from page 22
and a 98-ft. (29.9-m) Superlift mast. Lomma used 352,000 lb. (159,665 kg) of main counterweight with no central ballasts. Superlift counterweight of 275,000 lb. (124,738 kg) was added to the tray 50 ft. (15.2 m) from the crane base. “Normally, a lift like this would require only 220,000 lb. on the Superlift, but NASA’s additional safety factor required an extra 55,000 lb. (24,948 kg) on the tray,” explained Barnett. The additional safety requirement stemmed from the need for workers to be under the live load while unhooking the shuttle from its 747 SAC. “NASA required a 75 percent derate from the crane’s standard 85 percent chart, which is a big safety factor,” mentioned Signorelli. In the overnight hours, when airport activities were at a lull and winds were calm, Lomma and United Space Alliance crews began the removal of the shuttle. The 747 SAC, supporting crane lifting the front of the shuttle and CC 2800-1 lifting the heavier back end were all positioned according to NASA’s layout. NASA engineers used calculations from the CC 2800-1’s IC-1 controls to map out the final position of the crane. “They wanted the connection between the shuttle and our crane to be at 112 ft.,” said Barnett, “and the actual distance in the field from the center of the crane to the hook was 111.9 ft. They were impressed with IC-1’s accuracy.” Slowly and with precision the pick began with the weight shifting and then transferring to the cranes as the brackets were removed from the shuttle and carrier. After the shuttle hovered a safe distance over the carrier, a pushback tug backed it from underneath the shuttle. The shuttle was then lowered to within a few feet of the ground. Auxiliary hydraulic power lowered the shuttle’s landing gear for a final time before the cranes lowered it to the ground. “The subtle movements offered by the CC 2800-1’s hydraulic system definitely helped with this pick,” said Barnett. “If the crews only needed 0.5 inch of movement, the crane was able to give it to them.” A few days later, Discovery was towed to the Smithsonian and replaced the Space Shuttle Enterprise, which had been on display inside the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar since 2003. This prompted a second pick and final move of the Enterprise to its new home in New York. Enterprise on the Hudson Within a week after the Discovery pick, Lomma’s crews were back at Dulles, this time to reverse the process and load Enterprise on the 747 SAC. With one hoist
project already completed, the second pick of the Enterprise went equally as smooth as the Discovery effort. “Enterprise was actually much lighter than Discovery, so we had no issues,” said Signorelli. A lesser known, but vital link to the shuttle program, Enterprise never made a trip to outer space. It was constructed in the mid1970s as a prototype tester for what became the final space shuttle design. NASA engineers ran it through a number of flight and landing test simulations to prove the validity of the concept. While NASA initially intended to retrofit Enterprise for space travel, several final shuttle design changes kept it grounded. Enterprise, via the 747 SAC, took off from Dulles on April 27 for its final home in New York City and landed at JFK International Airport. At the same time, the CC 2800-1 crane components were derigged and loaded onto trucks and trailers heading for New York. Once arriving at JFK, the crane equipment was rigged, tested and ready for another shuttle pick. Originally scheduled for the morning hours of May 14, the Enterprise pick was moved up due to inclement weather. “Projected wind speeds were predicted to approach NASA’s 10 mph, which was the wind speed limit for removing the shuttle from its carrier,” mentioned Signorelli. Even though the CC 2800-1’s configuration for the Enterprise pick was rated for a maximum wind speed of 25 mph (40 kmh), NASA’s tighter wind threshold was followed. “Therefore, they moved the pick up two
days to start on May 12,” he added. Under clear weather conditions and wind speeds flirting with NASA’s threshold, Lomma began the pick just before midnight. Similar with the Discovery project at Dulles, careful planning and constant communication allowed the pick to be completed successfully. By 7 a.m. on May 13, Enterprise was loaded onto a special wheeled transport and moved into a hangar at JFK. It embarked on a three-day journey on the Hudson River in early June. Its final destination is the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City. “It’s indescribable to be a part of history,” commented Signorelli. “This is something I was able to take my kids to see, and a story they will tell their children.” About the Terex CC 2800-1 Crawler Crane The versatility of Terex crawler cranes begins with a broad range of available models, including lattice boom crawler cranes like the CC 2800-1, lattice boom truck cranes, narrow track carriers and pedestal cranes. A modular design delivers the flexibility to adapt the crane for specific project requirements. The CC 2800-1 offers a maximum 660ton (600-t) lift capacity at a 32.8-ft. (10-m) radius and excellent lifting capacities throughout its entire working range, according to the manufacturer. Its variable Superlift radius increases lifting capacities at further distances away from the crane’s base. A variety of boom configurations, including extensions, luffing jib, windmill kit, vessel lift, as

well as many other modules are available to increase crane versatility. Transportability is improved due to the CC 2800-1’s unique open-boom design. These rectangular sections do not sit as high on the trailer as competitive boom designs, and no internal cross bracing allows smaller boom sections to be nested inside of larger sections to reduce the number of trailers required for transport. The CC 2800-1 can be equipped with the Terex Fall Protection System, winner of the 2012 ESTA Safety award, which advances safety when rigging boom sections. Its IC-1 crane control system features a touchscreen with intuitive pictorial displays for operating ease. The crane’s QuadroDrive on-demand system improves operating stability and allows the base to move and spin under load, increasing on-site versatility. About J. F. Lomma Inc. James Lomma started J. F. Lomma Inc. in 1975 with one truck and trailer and a vision for a company far beyond that of a single truck driver. Over the years, he moved into the sales arena and expanded trucking operations to include specialized transportation for large and over-dimensional pieces, ranging from heavy equipment to airplanes. Further expansion led to a rigging department to unload and assemble the pieces of equipment that the company transported. The purchase of a crane company in 1996 expanded J. F. Lomma’s services to include lifting as well as transportation and rigging. Today, J. F. Lomma is a premier provider of cranes, heavy hauling, rigging and transport services in the northeast. With a fleet exceeding 355 cranes and growing, the company offers lifting services for virtually every need and is one of the most prominent crane-rental houses on the east coast. It serves an expanding customer base throughout the United States as well as contractors in Canada and the Caribbean. While substantially growing over the years to offer more services reaching a broader customer base, James Lomma has never forgotten his roots, and the company offers personalized service for all of its customers. “Mr. Lomma has a heart for the industry, his customers, the company and all the employees,” said Signorelli, a 24-year employee of J. F. Lomma. “His approach is the reason we are so successful.” For more information, contact J.F. Lomma at 973/589-2000 or info@jflommainc.com. JM Wood Auction Holds Successful Sale in Montgomery
J Looking over the largest excavator in the sale lineup, a Cat 375, (L-R) are Don Verner, Diversified Fabricators Inc., Griffin, Ga; Scotty Jones, SJ Farms, Garden Valley, Ga; and Gary Simmons, John Simmons & Sons, Ideal, Ga.
Talking about what’s going on in the used equipment business are Jerry Cole (L), C & C Equipment, Hattiesburg, Miss., and Bill Woods Woods Equipment Co., Nashville, Tenn.
M Wood Auction’s multi-day June sale at its headquarters in Montgomery, Ala., was a huge success, according to company representatives, who stated that there were bidders from 32 states and 14 countries. Highlights of the sale included a group of 2012 Mack GU713 tri-axle dumps that brought $125,000 each; a 2007 Komatsu GD655 motorgrader that sold for $120,000; and a 2006 Komatsu HD465-7EO for $205,000. “We had a tremendous turnout for our 39th annual summer auction,” said Vice President Bryant Wood. “We are starting to see a lot of new faces at the auctions. People are starting to get more work and they are coming to the auctions to update their fleets. It’s always exciting to meet new folks at the sale, but we are truly blessed to already have so many loyal customers that always come to every auction. It is truly an auction family we have down here.” Going under the fender of a Komatsu HD465 off road truck for an up close inspection is Rodney Payton, Chilton Contractors Inc., Clanton, Ala.
Checking machine values are Steve Hutchins (L), Sibley Enterprises, West Blocton, Ala., and Billy Sibley, owner of Sibley Enterprises and Statewide Land Services, West Blocton, Ala. Thoroughly testing the hydraulics on a Hitachi Zaxis 350LC is John Harris, used construction and forestry equipment specialist of NORTRAX at the company’s LaVergne, Tenn., location.
The JM Wood staff on the ramp roll in a package of four 2006 Komatsu HD4657 off-road trucks for some high-dollar bidding.
Making a final assessment and taking notes on a Cat 320CL excavator is Mark Enck, PowerTrac Machinery, Miami.
“Digging in deep” to see what makes this Cat 320L “tick” are Charles (L) and George Sobley , Sobley Excavating, Columbus, Miss.
