Rec Center Revamp Makes a Splash at LSU a dramatic makeover of the student recreation CEG CORRESPONDENT center at louisiana State University is making splashy headlines, as construction continues on a new leisure pool. an estimated 536 ft. (163.3 m) in length, the so-called “lazy river” will spell out the letters “lSU” and will feature two bubbler lounges in an area attached to the north base of the pool. “The cost of Phase iii of the project is about $54 million, and that includes expansion and redesign of the student recreational center,” said Ernie Ballard, lSU’s director of media relations. “This phase also includes redesign of the entryway, indoor pool and locker room space.” The overall price tag for the multi-phase UREC project totals $85 million. Architects of Kansas City, Mo.

Recently, Miami Beach-based contractor David Mancini & Sons, inc. (DMSi) was lowbidder to install two heavy precast pump station vaults for its hometown city of Miami Beach, Fla. The vaults were installed at 14th and 10th streets. The ground conditions for the excavations were extremely wet, and DMSi needed to install a large series of well points to get the soil as dry as possible. The poor soil condition also made shoring the excavation rather tricky as well. “The strategy was get in, set the precast vault pieces, and then get out as quickly as possible,” said Orlando Castelblanco, shoring specialist of shoring equipment distributor Efficiency Shoring & Supply. “and

despite needing to trouble shoot the excavation and shoring system installation around the well points, both pump stations were installed on time and on budget.” Castleblanco said.

Meade Tractor Acquires Eight Construction Dealerships By Eric Olson CEG CORRESPONDENT

One of the most trusted names in the Southeast for providing agricultural and turf equipment has now expanded its reach to include construction equipment in Tennessee and Kentucky, according to the company. Meade Tractor, with headquarters in Bristol, Tenn., has recently finalized the acquisition of eight John Deere Construction and Forestry branches from Nortrax. Meade’s newest full-service dealerships are located in Louisville, Bowling Green, London and Richmond, Ky., along with Chattanooga, Knoxville, Kingsport and Nashville, Tenn. With the dealership purchases, Meade now boasts a total of 15 dealerships offering a variety of equipment and services in the mid-south region. Meade’s seven other locations are John Deere agricultural and turf dealerships in eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina, southwestern Virginia and southern West Virginia. erational family business. We have a strong partnership with John Deere and now we are the authorized heavy construction equipment dealer for them in these markets.” He credits the robust health of Meade Tractor to its alliance with John Deere, but also in large measure to the efforts of his employees. “Our ability to acquire the construction operations is a direct result of the engagement of our employees and what we have been able to do to support our customers on the AG and Turf side,” Meade said. An Experienced Family Business He said that John Deere’s decision to partner with Meade Tractor also was based on the experience the Meade family has in operating dealerships in the area. His father, Charles, ran on-highway truck dealerships for 40 years and today serves as COO for the company’s AG and Turf division. Chuck Meade himself has 15 years working in sales and management in construction equipment dealerships. Over the last five years, the collaboration between John Deere and Meade Tractor in agricultural and turf equipment has proven to be a very fruitful association, and Chuck Meade expects that success to continue in the new venture, Meade said. most critical aspect of a dealership,” he said. “We are actively involved in making a reinvestment back into the business in terms of additional service trucks and additional technicians. That is extremely important to us. As a result, our top-level management is not necessarily sales-based, but, rather, productsupport-based. “ Meade Makes a Major Commitment To that end, Meade Tractor is analyzing its entire operation to determine which of its facilities are in need of an upgrade to better represent the John Deere brand. With that done, Meade said, the firm may be reinvesting in up to 70 percent of its dealerships. Besides being better representative of the brand, he sees this reinvestment as a demonstration to Meade Tractor’s customers and employees of its long term commitment to Andrew Bishop (L), shop supervisor, and Bryan Sage, customer support advisor.

ompany Wrench held a grand opening to celebrate its new location in Columbia, S.C. The day included a continental breakfast, followed by a barbecue lunch. The event also included raffle door prizes. Attendees had the opportunity to bid on a Kobelco SK35SR-6E mini-excavator to support The Wounded Warrior Project. Proceeds more than $25,000 from the auction will support injured service members through the 20 programs and services provided by WWP that are uniquely structured to nurture the mind and body, and encourage economic empowerment and engagement. More than 52,000 servicemen and women have been injured in the recent military conflicts. In addition to the physical wounds, it is estimated as many as 400,000 service members live with the invisible wounds of war including combat-related stress, major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Through this auction, the company is helping WWP work toward their vision of fostering the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history. Company Wrench’s 7.64 acre facility, just off I-20, is comprised of office space, a 7,800 sq. ft. (724 sq m) parts warehouse, an 8,640 sq. ft. (802.6 sq m) service department with drive through service, covered wash bay and plenty of room to house Company Wrench’s vast inventory. The dealership will carry a full line of Kobelco excavators, Strickland buckets, Terex Fuchs material handlers, Gehl skid steers, Stanley and LaBounty attachments, LiuGong wheel loaders, Dressta dozers and much more. Michael Dooley, general manager, heads the team. Dooley has an extensive background in the heavy equipment industry spanning 26 years. In addition, Tad Timmons serves as senior shop technician, and Leon Davis and Eric Gambiel are field technicians. JCB Receives 2015 Environmental Awareness Award JCB North America in Savannah, Ga., has been presented the 2015 Savannah Chamber of Commerce Environmental Awareness Award. Annually, the Savannah Chamber of Commerce recognizes businesses that excel in various areas including: environmental awareness, community involvement, safety and international business. The awards ceremony was held on June 11 in historic downtown Savannah. The environmental awareness award honors a corporation that has demonstrated outstanding performance in its efforts

to continuously improve environmental quality. JCB North America was nominated by several business partners due to the recent sustainability projects focusing on waste stream reduction and energy conservation. Partnering with Nexeo solutions, a global leader in environmental services, JCB has been able to reduce its waste stream by 92 percent since the program’s implementation. In order to reach this achievement, several areas of waste were addressed, including wood that at one time amassed 2

Since the program’s introduction, scrap wood from pallets, crates or loose lumber is ground into mulch then sold across a variety of markets. “Sustainability and the reduction of our environmental footprint is something JCB values,” said Stuart Hughes, executive vice president of manufacturing operations. “Our facility has undergone several environmental initiatives led by our Facilities Manager Roger Myerly. We’ve not only been able to reduce our waste streams but have also turned these streams into a source of revenue for the company.” JCB’s most recent environmental improvement project included replacing a 240-ton (217 t) air cooled chiller that served the office’s HVAC needs. JCB worked with Johnson Controls to develop a new system, which utilizes the natural cooling source of JCB’s man-made/well fed lake. Efficiency’s Slide Rail System can be configured into small foursided pits; an obstruction-free ClearSpan configuration; or in a Multi-Bay configuration to install large tanks and structures, or lengths of pipe more than 40 ft. (12.1 m) Slide rail is considered “positive shoring.” It is installed by sliding the panels into integrated rails on the posts, and then pushing the panels and posts incrementally down to grade as the pit is dug; a process commonly referred to as a “dig and push” shoring system. “That’s another advantage of our Slide Rail; there’s no over-excavation,” said Castelblanco. “The system keeps constant pressure against the surrounding dirt, which was critical for the saturated soil DMSI was digging in.” Multi-Bay Slide Rail Provides Open Space for Vault Install Mancini rented a two-bay, four-sided multi-bay configuration from Efficiency Shoring & Supply, which provides a larger unobstructed area for installing tanks, vaults and other structures. Mancini’s system was 18 ft. (5.4 m) wide, 29 ft. (8.8 m) long and 20 ft. (6 m) deep; and was installed with a Cat 345 excavator. A crane was used to install the vault base and the two 27 by 16 by 10 ft. (8.2 by 4.8 by 3 m) vault sections and cap. To address fall protection, Efficiency

Shoring also supplied a set of 10 ft. (3 m) wide guardrail, which integrates seamlessly onto the top of the slide rail panels. Multi-bay utilizes Efficiency’s exclusive parallel beams that roll up and down the slotted rail on the inside face of the linear posts and have spreader collars — like trench shield sidewalls — which pin standard trench box spreaders. For the DMSI project, tie-back waler i-beams were added at the top of the slide rail system on both of the long sides, attached into integrated waler brackets that connect into a slotted rail on the outside face of the linear posts. Paired with a “sacrificial member” such as a spreader pipe or timber beam braced cross-trench against the bottom of the linear posts; the entire parallel beam spreader assembly can be removed which provided Mancini with the full 29 ft. (8.8 m) of open space. To install the pre-cast pump station, Mancini chose an Efficiency Production Slide Rail System to shore the excavation in the heavily saturated soil. “We were used to using sheeting on jobs like this but found the Slide Rail to be more cost efficient,” said Mancini’s Christopher Lazzari.

Womack Inc. of Baton Rouge is serving as the project’s general contractor. “We have started erecting the steel structure and doing foundation work,” said Adam Bourgeois, Milton J. Womack senior project manager. “We are replacing the pool equipment and doing a cosmetic redo of the indoor swimming pool area.” Cranes, earthmoving equipment, man lifts and concrete pump trucks are among the heavy machinery needed during construction. Some of the main materials being used on the project are concrete, steel, masonry and architectural precast. An elevated indoor jogging trail made of steel and flooring is being added to the current facility, along with a turfed CrossFit training slope, a 35-foot climbing wall and the new outdoor pool area. An additional three courts will increase court space from five to eight, including multi-purpose courts. A fitness assessment center and outdoor adventure

the new parking lot and nine new tennis courts opened at the student recreation complex. Phase III’s contract started in October 2014, with an anticipated completion date of spring 2017. Phase III includes updating the current indoor swimming pool, gutting and redesigning locker rooms, moving administration offices to the front of the facility and expanding 13,000 sq. ft. (1,207 sq m) of cardio/weight space to 40,431 sq. ft. (3,756.1 sq m). “Students are excited,” said Ballard. “Student government leaders visited other campuses to see what types of UREC facilities peer institutions had. After their visit to other campuses, they voted on a self-imposed fee to fund the expansion project for LSU’s rec center. The amenities in the expanded UREC will include some of the most requested amenities by prospective students.” The expansion will include an eight-lane indoor lap pool with a varying depth from 4 to 5 ft. (1.2 to 1.5 m), an eightlane lighted outdoor lap pool, the outdoor, lighted leisure pool, a sun deck with 21,000 sq. ft. (1,950 sq m) broom-finished concrete with a sand-blasted etching of tiger stripes, lounging spaces, sun umbrellas and drinking fountains. The work involves a 136,177 sq. ft. (12,651 sq m) addition to the current 121,000 sq. ft. (11,241 sq m) facility. Current LSU students, members and guests will have access. Some have blasted LSU’s spending in a difficult economic climate, but Ballard says the criticism is unfair. In November 2011, after polling on campus, student government members passed a resolution asking for a student recreation fee increase, which went toward this expansion project. “The funds for the project come directly from the student fee, and can only be used for the project,” Ballard said. “Similar to donations to the university or funds from the state for capital projects, these types of funds can’t be shifted to fill in budget holes or be used in another way. They can only be used for what they were originally designated for.” Officials also did their homework. LSU student leaders and UREC staff visited campus recreation centers in Texas and Alabama, for example, to gain insight on potential amenities they would like to see in a future UREC expansion and redesign project. According to Ballard, an update was needed, as the school looks to the future. “LSU’s UREC facility opened in 1992, so there was a need for renovation and expansion as the campus has grown in both size and in student population over the past 20 years

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) Construction is expected to begin later on June on an Interstate 81 interchange, despite a lawsuit the Virginia Department of Transportation faces over how it obtained land for the project. The owners of TravelCenters of America are going to court to seek lost profits from the department, which used eminent domain to shut down the business last year, the Roanoke Times reported. The department maintains the truck stop needed to go because it stood in the way of the project that is expected to ease congestion around Exit 150 in Botetourt County. The company and the owners of six other properties affected by the project are mired in litigation against the department. A protracted legal battle could drive up the project cost, which has already exceeded original estimates. A $17.9 million contract awarded in March to Branch Highways was about

$3.4 million more than the department had estimated for the construction phase of a project that costs a total of $46 million. According to the department’s spokesman Jason Bond, the transportation agency was able to adjust funding to cover the costs of the construction contract. “Being over the estimate does not mean we have exceeded the construction budget, which is set at the time of contract award,” Bond wrote in an email. “It is the same with right of way estimates.” It is too soon to know how much the department will wind up spending on the land it needs for the project. Of the seven cases currently pending in court, one is scheduled to be tried in October and another in November. No trial dates have been scheduled for the remaining cases. department said it needs to add $1 billion in annual funding. But a chorus of proposals â&#x20AC;&#x201D; ranging from increasing the gas tax to reforming the DOT â&#x20AC;&#x201D; failed to gain enough traction before the end of the legislative session June 4. Some funding could be on its way this year in the form of $150 million in additional spending that has received the support of both the House and Senate, but a larger agreement will have to wait until next January. Gov. Nikki Haley kicked off the year with a surprise reversal on her campaign promises not to increase the gas tax. During her State of the State address, the governor called for a gas tax increase coupled with income tax cuts. The House, which had planned on finding $400 million for roads without a gas tax increase, passed a roads bill with a vetoproof majority seven weeks before the end of the session. The bill cut the income tax by far less than the $1.8 billion the governor asked for. The Senate followed up with a proposal to raise $800 million annually from taxes and fees, while cutting $700 million from

income tax revenues. A filibuster by Sen. Tom Davis, R-Beaufort, with two weeks left killed the bill. Davis argued increased tax revenues from population growth and improved DOT spending could provide sufficient road funding. Business leaders in the state largely supported efforts to increase spending on roads, arguing that crumbling road conditions could reverse the trend of economic growth since the end of the Great Recession. The state DOT oversees the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fourth largest highway system. According to the DOT, 10 percent of interstate highway miles are in â&#x20AC;&#x153;poorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; condition, 46 percent of federal and state highways are in â&#x20AC;&#x153;poorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; condition and half of secondary roads not receiving federal funding are labeled â&#x20AC;&#x153;poor.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;&#x2122; According to survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau, average commute times in South Carolina range from 21.6 minutes in the Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin metro area to 23.9 minutes in Columbia.
