One of the Tennessee River’s major hydroelectric dams in eastern Tennessee is under construction that is designed to greatly improve highway traffic in the area. The Fort Loudoun Dam is located on the river at Lenoir City, southwest of Knoxville. Built by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) during World War II, the dam has provided continuous electricity and flood control on the Tennessee since its completion in 1943. The 4,190-ft. (1,277.1 m) long, 122-ft. (37.2 m) high dam created Fort Loudoun Lake, from which the dam gets its power. Water from the nearby Tellico Reservoir also helps operate the dam. One Bridge to Be Demolished U.S. Highway 321/Tennessee Route 73 currently carries vehicle traffic over the dam via the J. Carmichael Greer Bridge. However, U.S. 321/Tenn. 73 is only two lanes wide over the 50-year-old bridge, as well as the

approaches to it and two other bridges nearby. The rest of the highway for miles in each direction is made up of four lanes. Therefore, as part of the entire project, the Greer Bridge is slated to be demolished. The highway will be diverted just south of the dam and across a new four-lane bridge over the river about 2,000 ft. (609.6) downstream of the dam. According to the Tennessee DOT, the fact

that the Greer Bridge was only designed for two lanes of vehicle traffic was not the only reason that it is being dismantled. “From at least the 1990s, TVA has wanted to remove bridges from on top of its dams to provide easier and safer access for workers to perform maintenance to the dams,” said Mark Nagi, community relations officer of TDOT’s see DAM page 70

Small wonder Congress has kept federal highway and transit programs teetering on the edge of insolvency for years, unable to find a politically acceptable long-term source of funds. The public can’t make up its mind on how to pay for them either.

Keystone Manages Drainage Problems With Efficiency By James McRay SPECIAL TO CEG

“When we have a tough excavation project to conquer, we choose to use the pros at Efficiency Shoring & Supply,” said Jeff Truxton, general superintendent, Keystone. “Efficiency has what we need for every application without having to give a months’ notice to get equipment. It’s on the job site when we need it and Efficiency provides the support we need to get the job done,”

Recently, contractor Keystone Excavators Inc. was low‐bidder to install a heavy precast storm water filtration vault for the city of Dunedin, Fla. The $201,000 vault installation subproject was part of the city’s President Street Drainage Project. To install the Suntree Technologies manufactured precast vault, Keystone, headquarted in Oldsmar, Fla., needed to deal with a drainage problem all its own. Throughout the project, groundwater in the excavation was an ongoing problem that needed to be managed. “The strategy was get in, get out; as quickly as possible,” said Paul Strazzula, shoring specialist of shoring equipment distributor Efficiency Shoring & Supply. “Keystone began digging the pit on Tuesday, set three stacked trench boxes, install the vault at grade, then backfilled the hole. They were finished in time on Thursday morning.” Strazzula said. To manage the ever-present water in the excavation, Keystone employed a 4-in. (10.1 cm) submersible hydraulic pump and then a second, 6-in. (15.2 cm) pump to keep the water manageable in the bottom of Keystone uses a Cat 349 to excavate and set three the hole. Tarheel Firm Positions Itself for Continued Success

(L-R): Eddie Miller and John Thompson, both of Glover Construction Company, and Chuck Harris of Benchmark Tool & Supply go over the data supplied by the Topcon hand held FC-500.

The operator of this Cat Challenger tractor pulls the disk wheels through the soil, breaking it up and allowing it to dry out.

By Eric Olson CEG CORRESPONDENT

From modest beginnings in rural northeastern North Carolina, Glover Construction Co. Inc. has grown into a respected building firm in the southeast. Its impeccable reputation is due in large measure to being able to overcome a variety of project difficulties to deliver a finished product on time, on budget, in a safe manner and without contractor-generated “change orders.” Glover Construction, based in Pleasant Hill, northeast of Roanoke Rapids just south of the Virginia state line, moves millions of tons of dirt each year as a company that specializes in mass excavation. Its projects include residential/resort development, landfills, large commercial/industrial development, wetland mitigation and dredging. “We were one of the first companies in North Carolina to build landfills,” said John Glover III, the third generation of Glover to run the construction firm. “We come from the eastern part of the state which is known for having wetter conditions than the west. The first landfill we built in Virginia was built in a swamp, which you can’t do any longer. But, the wetter the work, the more accustomed we are to it. Since then we have grown into doing more rocky work. I was always raised to believe that if you can handle water you can handle anything.” A Precision Instrument at Work Lately, in order to more precisely grade dirt on its various projects, Glover Construction has been working with

Raleigh’s Benchmark Tool & Supply Inc. to install Topcon Positioning Systems products in some of its equipment. Topcon is recognized as one of the world’s leading makers of GPS systems that employ automated grade control technology, according to the company. The benefits of using the Topcon system were immediately apparent to Glover Construction. “The speed at which Topcon works has been very important to our business,” said Glover. “A lot of the work we do has to be done on a tight timeframe, meaning that we cannot afford to do it twice. The Topcon system allows you to grade it one time and when you are finished grading it you can move on to the next section. “You don’t have to worry about redoing it once the surveyor comes out there. Flagler Unveils Products, Services at Trade Event Volvo Construction Equipment recently hosted a trade review event at the new Flagler Construction Equipment LLC headquarters in Tampa, Fla. The event was held to introduce trade media representatives to its three newest products: the G-Series artic haulers (represented by the A40G); EC380E crawler excavator; and L150H/L180H/L220H large wheel loaders (represented by the L150H). It also provided guests the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new facility and what Flagler has to offer. Tommy Ball, senior vice president and partner of Flagler, took the opportunity to discuss the resilience of Flagler throughout the economic downturn of 2008, and future plans for the company. “In 2007/2008 when the Florida economy collapsed, Flagler’s new branch in Fort Myers saw a drastic decrease in its local business due to the decline of the residential market. That business is coming back strong, and the facility is now Flagler’s major rebuild facility.” Ball credits the growth of Flagler to the phosphate and residential market as well as a new highway bill. “If you look at Flagler 2014 year to date, its industry is up more than 80 percent and its Penn Jersey market is up more than 30 percent. Both companies have enjoyed a very good 2014 market not only in its heavy equipment divisions, but in its road machinery, and compact divisions as well.” Ian Harvey, Volvo director of product marketing and communication, discussed Volvo’s core values “Core values at Volvo stand for safety, quality and environmental care. Certainly the safety aspect we take very seriously. The quality is built in there and the environmental care in everything we do. Even in the new facility we are building, the environmental care is very important.” Harvey also talked about Volvo’s impact and global reach.

(L-R): Tommy Ball, senior vice president and partner of Flagler; Donald P. Woodruff, Woodruff & Sons, Bradenton, Fla.; Mike Jarrell, American Construction & Engineering in Bartow, Fla.; and Rich Fuist, RIPA & Associates, Tampa, Fla.

“We are a 45 billion dollar company. Volvo reaches out to many other different parts of the world. We have a Volvo real estate group. The majority of out people are based in Europe. We employ about 15,000 people, about 7,000 of them are in Europe, we have another 5,000 in the Far East and Asia, and there are a couple of thousand in the Americas.” Volvo and Flagler product experts were on hand to provide detailed information on each machine. The press had the opportunity to talk with the dealer staff and principals and to interview three Flagler / Volvo CE customers: Don Woodruff, president, Woodruff & Sons; Mike Jarrell, president of Dolime Minerals; and Rich Fuist, director of fleet operations, Ripa and Associates. The customers talked about their operations, how the Volvo equipment per-

forms for them, their perspective on the construction industry market in general, as well as how Tier IV final regulations are affecting their companies and their buying decisions. Flagler has seven locations throughout Florida including Lake City, Tampa, Ft. Myers, Davie, Orlando, Jacksonville and a parts only facility in Miami. Flagler and Penn Jersey’s goal in the future is to reach every port of entry on the eastern seaboard. Currently, Penn Jersey has locations in Deptford and Flemington, N.J., Lionville, Pa., and Staten Island, N.Y., and is moving into the Baltimore and Virginia markets with its allied products. JCB’S ’14 Mud Run & Dig The Ride Raises More Than $100K Steve Vernon, VP finance, JCB, and Thom Peebles, VP marketing, JCB, present a check for $100,500 — the proceeds from this year's Mud Run and Dig the Ride — to The Lady Bamford Center children staff and the Executive Director of Wesley Center, Tammy Mixon.

More than 2,000 runners, riders and spectators got “down and dirty” at JCB’s third annual Mud Run and first-ever Dig the Ride cycling event at the company’s North American Headquarters in Savannah, Ga. Proceeds from both races benefit The Lady Bamford Center for Early Childhood Development. In a check presentation ceremony July 22, Thom Peebles, vice president of marketing at JCB, presented a check for $100,500 to Tammy Mixon, the executive director of Wesley Center, which operates The Lady Bamford Center. Also on hand to participate in the ceremony were: Steve Vernon, vice president of finance of JCB; Debi Mulanax, chief financial officer of the Lady Bamford Center advisory board; and David Paddison, Lady Bamford Center board member and board chair of The Mud Run/Dig the Ride. This year’s donation, made possible by race participants and JCB’s generous sponsors, will go a long way towards continuing to support The Lady Bamford Center and its educational mission. “Months ago, as we began planning for this year’s Mud Run, we knew we wanted it to be the biggest and best one yet,” said Thom Peebles, vice president of marketing of JCB North America. “Along the way, we came up with the idea of adding a cycling event, and that’s how Dig the Ride was born. Our staff made sure that both race courses featured twists and turns that made them fun and challenging for both runners and cyclists. However, most importantly, we were able to exceed previous years’ goals by raising more than $100,000 for The Lady Bamford Center. We sincerely thank our participants, volunteers, generous sponsors and spectators who made it all possible.” 2014 Mud Run JCB’s Mud Run consisted of teams of two making their way through a sloppy, messy 5-mi. course spread across JCB’s sprawling 1,000-acre campus. Runners splashed through a lake and traveled down

numerous trails featuring obstacles that tested both their endurance and their ability to get dirty. 2014 Dig the Ride For the first time in 2014, JCB added to the Mud Run fun by adding an all-terrain cycling event, Dig the Ride. Cyclists rode a 5-mi. XC Course complete with limbs, drops, bridges, berms, speed-oriented passing stretches and light obstacles. The race featured three levels of competition for riders aged 17 and up, with novice riders taking one lap of the course (5 mi.), intermediate riders tackled the course twice (10 mi.) and advanced riders pedaled around the course three times (15 mi.). Racers aged 13 to 17 years old made up the youth category, taking one lap of the course with optional bail-outs. The Lady Bamford Center Operated by Wesley Community Centers of Savannah, the Lady Bamford Center provides education and social skills development to children from six weeks to five years of age. Located at 1410 Richard St. in west Savannah, the center offers priority admission to children from homeless and lowincome families, as well as children with physical, mental or emotional challenges. Its interactive curriculum prepares young children for kindergarten and elementary school and helps them compete with other children academically. The Lady Bamford Center is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Fewer than eight percent of all early childhood centers in the United States receive this prestigious honor. For more information, visit jcbmudrun.com, www.digtheride.com or www.wesleyctrs-savh.org/. A & B Dirt Movers Lives Up to Its Name for I-40 As the project to expand Interstate 40 in central Arkansas was announced, it was a pretty good bet that some of the grading work for the highway would be handled by A&B Dirt Movers Inc. Since 1954, the company had done site preparation, grading and storm drainage work on hundreds of projects throughout the Conway region. This included roads and highways, colleges and universities, airports, retail centers, office complexes and more. In the 60 years since the company was formed, the Conway region grew from roughly 6,000 people to more than 60,000 residents. This massive growth helped fuel the need to expand the highway between Conway and Little Rock from four to six lanes. When A&B was awarded the site preparation work for a 4-mi. (6.4 km) stretch of the highway expansion in 2013, owner Jerry Nabholz knew he was going to need the right hydraulic excavator to get the job done on time and on budget. Working with Damon Jones, the branch manager of Scott Equipment, A&B acquired a Kobelco SK260LC, a nearly 30-ton (27.2 t) excavator with a 176-hp engine (2,100 rpm) and a bucket capacity of up to 1.83 cu. yds. (1.39 cu m). “I needed this excavator to move the dirt efficiently. This machine has a lot of power — but also great fuel savings, which is important,” Nabholz said. “It’s been getting the job done for us and we plan to use it at some other sites as well.” A&B Dirt has spent most of the fall of 2013 and early 2014 on site preparation for the Interstate, including grading, storm drainage work and preparing the base. “Basically everything but the asphalt and the pouring of concrete,” Nabholz said. Jones said he had worked extensively with Nabholz’s company during his career, and knew the Kobelco machine would be ideal for the highway grading work. “I was glad to recommend the SK260LC to A&B,” Jones said. “There’s so much about this excavator to talk about, and it seems like Jerry’s been really pleased with how it’s performed.” Jones listed the excavator’s greater performing capacity and its overall cost efficiency as two of the primary drivers of the SK260LC’s appeal. The machine’s HINO engine provides strong fuel efficiency and reduced emissions with no loss of digging proficiency. The SK260LC has a maximum bucket digging force of 38,464 lbs. (17,446.9 kg) and a maximum arm crowding force of 28,600 lbs. (12,972.7 kg).

“Kobelco is big on selling the three e’s: enhancement, economy and environment — and those all really come through with this machine,” Jones said. “For example, Jerry can save up to two and a half tanks of fuel a week, and depending on the price, that can mean saving $750 dollars a week.” Nabholz said a savings of $3,000 in monthly fuel cost makes a huge financial impact when bidding on jobs. “It can mean the difference between getting a job and not getting it,” Nabholz said. “It also means you might make As the project to expand Interstate 40 in central Arkansas was announced, it was a pretty good bet that some of the grading work for the highway would be handled by A&B Dirt Movers Inc.

some money on the job.” Another benefit Jones discussed was the KOMEX system that allows Nabholz to use the Internet to manage information about the excavator at all times, no matter where the machine is located. “There’s a GPS in the machine that uploads information about the unit online, which you can access from your computer. It tells you if anything is wrong with how it’s operating — like if it’s operating hot,” Jones said. “It also helps with security, because it will alarm you if it’s operated or moved where it shouldn’t be.” Jones also said the excavator has a bigger cab with wide windows and a rear-view camera for safety. “The nine-position seat can really cut down on operator fatigue,” Jones said. At the job site, Nabholz said the excavator is on the job from 6:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. “I’ve really liked working with this excavator. It performs well and is really comfortable,” said Nabholz’s son Jesse, who is the primary operator of the company’s SK260LC. Jerry’s father, Alfred Nabholz, founded A&B Dirt Movers Inc. in 1954. Today, the company employs 22 people and owns more than 40 machines to serve the Conway area. As the family business continues to flourish, Jerry is joined by his three sons Jesse, Zach and Tony. Nabholz said that 90 percent of the company’s projects are within 20 mi. of Conway. In addition to the I-40 highway expansion, A&B Dirt also is working on grading and site preparation work at Conway Municipal Airport and the University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College and Central Baptist College. “We’re looking at a good 2014 and we’re going to put all our Kobelco excavators to use this year,” Nabholz said. The company also operates the SK210LC and the SK350LC models. Scott Equipment Company is headquartered in Monroe, La., and began in 1939 as an agricultural store using mules as trade for farm equipment. From its humble beginnings with one store and 10 employees, the company now has 25 locations in five states. For more information on Kobelco Construction Machinery USA, visit www.Kobelco-USA.com. U.S. Equipment Rental Revenue Projected to Exceed $51B in 2018 The equipment rental industry in the United States is expected to generate $35.8 billion in revenue and outpace gross domestic product (GDP) by more than four times in 2014, according to the American Rental Association’s (ARA) latest forecast from the ARA Rental Market Monitor. Economic data and analysis for ARA Rental Market Monitor are compiled by IHS Inc., the leading global source of critical information and insight. In the United States, total equipment rental revenue is forecast to grow 7.6 percent in 2014 to reach $35.8 billion, 10.5 percent in 2015 to reach $39.6 billion and another 10.2 percent in 2016 to reach $43.6 billion,

surpassing the previous industry record of $36.9 billion in 2007. The growth rate is expected to be 8.9 percent in 2017 and 7.7 percent in 2018, with total rental revenue of $51.2 billion. “The U.S. economy slowed more than expected in the first half of the year, but equipment rental demand has remained strong and rental growth will still handily outperform the overall economy. Looking forward, commercial construction and housing starts will contribute to growth in the construction and industrial and general tool segments,” said Scott Hazelton, managing director of IHS Global Insight. Over the next two years, the construction

and industrial segment and the general tool segment will experience double-digit growth in U.S. rental revenue. In 2015, construction and industrial rental revenue is projected to increase 10.7 percent and general tool 11.7 percent and again in 2016 with increases of 10.4 percent and 11.6 percent respectively. The party and event segment is expected to continue its same steady growth, with revenue increasing 4.2 percent in the United States in 2014 to reach $2.6 billion. The forecast for Canada calls for 5.2 percent growth in 2014 to $4.9 billion, with growth of 6.0 percent in 2015, 6.6 percent in 2016, 3.5 percent in 2017 and 3.6 percent in

2018 to total $5.9 billion at the end of the latest forecast. It also is expected that rental companies in the United States will continue to invest more than 30 percent of their revenue in new equipment over the next five years. Total investment, according to the ARA Rental Market Monitor, is projected to reach $12.1 billion in 2014 and grow to $16.1 billion by 2018. For more information, visit www.ARArental.org. No Agreement On How to Payfor Roads Among Taxpayers By Joan Lowy and Jennifer Agiesta ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) Small wonder Congress has kept federal highway and transit programs teetering on the edge of insolvency for years, unable to find a politically acceptable long-term source of funds. The public can’t make up its mind on how to pay for them either. Six in 10 Americans think the economic benefits of good highways, railroads and airports outweigh the cost to taxpayers. Yet there is scant support for some of the most frequently discussed options for paying for construction of new roads or the upkeep of existing ones, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. Among those who drive places multiple times per week, 62 percent say the benefits outweigh the costs. Among those who drive less than once a week or not at all, 55 percent say the costs of road improvement are worthwhile. Yet a majority of all Americans — 58 percent — oppose raising federal gasoline taxes to fund transportation projects such as the repair, replacement or expansion of roads and bridges. Only 14 percent support an increase. And by a better than 2-to-1 margin, Americans oppose having private companies pay for construction of new roads and bridges in exchange for the right to charge tolls. Moving to a usage tax based on how many miles a vehicle drives also draws more opposition than support — 40 percent oppose it, while 20 percent support it. Support for shifting more responsibility for paying for such projects to state and local government is a tepid 30 percent. “Congress is actually reflecting what people want,’’ said Joshua Schank, president and CEO of the Eno Center for

Transportation, a transportation think tank. “People want to have a federal [transportation] program and they don’t want to pay for it.’’ Congress recently cobbled together $10.8 billion to keep transportation aid flowing to states by changing how employers fund worker pension programs, extending customs user fees and transferring money from a fund to repair leaking underground fuel storage tanks. The money was needed to make up a shortfall between aid promised to states and revenue raised by the federal 18.4 cents-per-gallon gas tax and the 24.4 cents-per-gallon diesel tax, which haven’t been increased in more than 20 years. It’s the fifth time in the last six years that Congress has patched a hole in the federal Highway Trust Fund that pays for highway and transit aid. Each time it gets more difficult for lawmakers to find the money without increasing the federal budget deficit. Critics described the pension funding changes used this time as budget gimmicks that would cost the government more in the long run and undermine employee pension programs. The latest patch cleared Congress about three hours before midnight July 31, the day before the Transportation Department said it would begin cutting back aid payments to states. The current fix is only expected to cover the revenue gap through next May, when Congress will be back where it started unless lawmakers act sooner. The most direct solution would be to raise fuel taxes. That’s what three blue-ribbon federal commissions have recommended. But opposition to a gas tax increase cuts across party lines, although Republicans are more apt to oppose an increase, 70 percent, than Democrats, 52 percent. “Every time we turn around there’s another tax, and our gas taxes are so high now,’’ said James Lane of Henry

County in rural south-central Virginia, who described himself as leaning toward the GOP. Lane favors allowing companies to pay for the construction of new or expanded roads and bridges in exchange for the right to impose tolls on motorists, often for many decades. There have been projects like that in Virginia, but since those roads are in more populated areas of the state where he doesn’t drive it makes sense to have the people who use them pay for them, he said. But Michael Murphy a data services contractor who lives near San Antonio, Texas, where a high-speed public-private toll road is scheduled to open this fall, said he’d rather see gas taxes increased than tolls imposed on drivers. Roads benefit everyone, even if indirectly, so it’s only fair that everyone who drives pays something toward their cost, he said. A majority of those surveyed, 56 percent, say traffic in the area where they live has gotten worse in the last five years. Only 6 percent say traffic has improved in their area, and 33 percent that it’s stayed about the same. The AP-GfK Poll was conducted July 24 to 28 using KnowledgePanel, GfK’s probability-based online panel designed to be representative of the U.S. population. It involved online interviews with 1,044 adults. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points for all respondents, larger for subgroups. Respondents were first selected randomly using phone or mail survey methods, and were later interviewed online. People selected for KnowledgePanel who didn’t otherwise have access to the Internet were provided with the ability to access the Internet at no cost to them. RANC Presents $5,000 to NCACP

T

he Recycling Association of North Carolina (RANC) held its annual meeting at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C., on July 30. Approximately 30 members attended events. There was a legislative agenda and a $5,000 check was presented to the NCACP board of directors in Wilmington on July 21. This initial check was presented to establish the NCACP Police Officer’s Assistance Fund — sponsored by the RANC. The RANC board of directors made the decision to support this new program that will assist officers and/or their families when an urgent need arises. The thousands of North Carolina police officers, the NCACP www.ncacp.org thanked the members of the RANC for their generosity and support of the men and women who serve and protect their communities every day. Sir Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

DuraClass Unveils Newly Improved HPT ‘Tub’ Body Line DuraClass recently introduced the newly improved HPT “tub” body line. The line has been redesigned to meet all heavy duty dump body needs. The HPT-B1 features a closed fender design, and comes in 14- to 18-ft. (4.3 to 5.5 m) lengths in either carbon steel or stainless steel. The HPT-B1 has capacity ranges from 10- to 20-cu. yd. (7.6 to 15.3 cu m). The HPT-B2 features an open fender design, which decreases the possible areas for rust and the overall body weight. The body comes in 10- and 11-ft. (3 to 3.3 m) lengths in 3/16-in. AR400 carbon steel, and 14- to 18-ft. (4.2 to 5.4 m) lengths in 3/16-in. hi-tensile carbon steel. The HPT-B2 also has an option for stainless steel. DuraClass designs and manufactures a comprehensive range of premium Class 3 to 8 dump bodies, hoists, and related equipment and offers more than 100 years of engineering and manufacturing expertise. Kenworth’s Enhanced K270, K370 Cabovers Now Available The new Kenworth K270 and K370 cabovers with extensive new exterior and interior enhancements are now available for order. Kenworth’s K270 Class 6 and K370 Class 7 cabovers are for pick-up-and-delivery operations, food and beverage companies, furniture hauling, landscape businesses, and street sweeping and striping, among other applications. The Kenworth cabovers are especially ideal for city and neighborhood applications, where tight turning and a shorter overall length are required. New additions to the Kenworth K270 and K370 cabovers include a fresh exterior, new dash and gauge cluster, front air disc brakes, electronic braking module, Allison 6-speed transmission, push-button control shifter and Dana rear axles. “With these key enhancements, Kenworth is bringing a new level of excellence of quality, innovation and comfort to the medium duty market,” said Doug Powell, Kenworth’s medium duty marketing manager. Powell noted that truck operators running medium duty conventional trucks in metropolitan areas also are considering cabovers because of a better turning radius, extra payload room, and changing urban length laws. “Compared to a typical medium duty conventional, the K270 and K370 offer up to a 30 percent better curb-to-curb turning radius, a 63.4-inch BBC with an extra 45 inches of payload room, and a 35-foot overall length which is rapidly becoming the new norm in major cities,” Powell said. The K270 and K370 are standard with the 6.7-L PACCAR PX-7 engine rated at 220-hp and 520 lb.-ft. of torque, and the Allison 2100HS 5-speed transmission. Both truck

models feature a standard air ride driver’s seat and two-person bench seating with storage underneath. A new option is single driver and passenger seats with a large console with storage and cup holders in between. Available with wheelbases ranging from 142 to 242 in. (360 to 614 cm) in 12-in. (30.5 cm) increments, the Kenworth K270 and K370 can accommodate bodies from 16 to 28 ft. (4.8 to 8.5 m). A large 2,500-sq.-in. wraparound windshield combines with large side windows to give opti-

mum visibility. For specialized applications, the Kenworth cabovers offer a new “clear rail” package that relocates the air tanks, DEF tank, battery box, and exhaust after treatment up behind the cab. This new option opens up room for custom bodies, such as street sweepers. For more information, visit www.kenworth.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

XL Bottom Dump Features Customized Hopper Opening Ideal for the aggregates industry to haul and dump gravel and other materials, the XL bottom dump features a customized extra large upper hopper opening of 96 by 193 in. (244 by 490 cm). At 53 in. (134 cm) high, the upper hopper is made out of 10gauge steel and uses a flip and go tarp system. The lower hopper is 59 by 118 in. (150 by 300 cm) and equipped with ASTM A572 10-gauge plate. Both the upper and lower hoppers are fitted with reinforced side walls for added strength and stability. With a length of 40 ft. (12 m), the trailer features a side height of 9 ft., 2 in. (2.8 m) plus 10-in. (25.4 cm) boards. A weight of 12,750 lbs. (5,783 kg) that includes a tarp and push-block, the bottom dump trailer offers a 25-cu. yd. (19 cu m) capacity with 10-in. bang boards. The gates, like the lower hopper, are made of ASTM A-5723 steel and feature adjustable side locks. To maneuver over large piles, an oscillating fifth wheel pivots as needed with an 18in. (45.7 cm) kingpin setting. Featuring two 25,000-lb. (11,340 kg), 5-in. (12.7 cm) tubular axles, the trailer has cut and chip resistant tires for on and off road use and 16.5 by 7in. (42 by 17.7 cm) brakes.

The air-operated gate system is equipped with two 8-in. (20 cm) cylinders, in-line filter and lubricator, 60-gal. (227 L) air reservoir and quick exhaust valves. Prepped for electronic cab control, open and shut gates from the cab or from the ground using manual override. A heavy-duty push-block is 44 in. (112 cm) wide and 10 in. tall for off-road jobs in tough traction conditions. “The new XL Bottom Dump trailer’s large hopper allows users to reach the max capacity even when hauling less dense materials, resulting in better efficiency out on the job site,” said Rodney Crim, director of sales at XL Specialized Trailers. “Our trailers are always designed with the top materials for an incredibly durable product and the bottom dump trailer is no exception. Aggregate jobs need reliable, rugged products, and considering the size, maneuverability and other new features, the XL bottom dump trailer will be a perfect combination out in the field. For more information, visit xlspecializedtrailer.com. The XL bottom dump trailer is something that the customers were very interested in and it hits another market — the aggregates market — that XL has not yet been a part of, said Rodney Crim, director of sales at XL Specialized Trailers.

Felling’s Litchfield Branch Marks Two Years of OSHA Safety Workplace safety is of the utmost importance at Felling Trailers. Safety meetings are held once a month and posters are displayed as a constant reminder to keep safety on the forefront of everyone’s mind. Recently, the Litchfield location achieved two years without an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable injury with lost time. To celebrate everyone’s achievement, Felling Trailers catered in a meal, paid a bonus, and did a random drawing for a big screen television. Felling Trailers is proud of each team member for putting safety first and achieving this milestone. For more information, call 800/245.2809 or visit www.felling.com. Allu Attachment Eliminates Steps From Mining Process

Inefficiency in the mining process adds to the cost of doing business and often is a result of unnecessary processing steps, extra handling and wasted material.

By Dale Mickle SPECIAL TO CEG

As costs for fuel, personnel, equipment and regulatory compliance rise, the extraction of resources from the ground in North America is becoming more expensive and complex. Inefficiency in the mining process adds to the cost of doing business, and often is a result of unnecessary processing steps, extra handling and wasted material. Just about any mining application will follow many of the same traditional processing

steps, whether it is hard rock mining, soft rock mining or quarrying. After blasting or excavating, large trucks transport the material to primary and secondary crushing and/or grinding and screening stages. Although the processes have remained the same for decades, this practice of taking the rock to the machine typically results in capital expenses from equipment purchases, as well as wasted material, time and fuel — ultimately resulting in unnecessary cost. It stands to reason, therefore, that anytime you can reduce processing steps in mining, you

also are reducing time and cost. The influx of track-mounted crushers and screens into North America has allowed some operators to let the machine follow the material in a number of applications, reducing haulage costs. But the technique still requires machinery to load, and additional machinery to crush and screen the material, which adds to fuel, personnel and capital expenditures. Taking the concept of bringing the machine to the material one step further, there is an option for soft-rock mining that

has been developed by Allu Group. The Allu M-Series screener crusher attachment, for use on excavators from 50 to 160 tons (45 to 145 t) or wheel loaders from 30 to 90 tons (27 to 81 t), is allowing some mining companies to reduce from three or four separate processing steps — crushing, screening, mixing and loading — combining them into one step. The result is a loading/processing machine that also is highly mobile, according to the manufacturer. see ALLU page 58

Rockster Recycler Unveils Interchangeable Duplex Plant Rockster Recycler North America introduced its mobile duplex system, a trackmounted crushing plant that allows the contractor to interchange an impact crusher with a jaw crusher, and vice-versa, on the same chassis. This capability creates a dual-purpose machine for a wider range of recycle, demolition and aggregate crushing applications. Available in the R1100/1200 impact/jaw models and the R900/800 impact/jaw models, the duplex system allows one crusher unit to exchange with the other crusher unit in approximately four to five hours using an excavator. An overnight exchange of crusher units on the plant by a maintenance crew means the plant can be on the job site and ready to crush by morning. The R1100/1200 processes 280 to 350 tons (254 to 317.5 t) per hour; the R900/800 processes 120 to 240 tons (109 to 218 t) per hour. Rockster Recycler’s horizontal shaft impact crushers feature two hydraulically adjustable swing-beams, as well as on-thefly rotor speed adjustment for accurate material sizing and fines control. A massive rotor with four-bar hammer can be positioned in two-high and two-low or all four-high con-

figuration. The hydraulically adjustable jaw crushers feature oversize bearings and shafts and are reversible to easily remove uncrushables. The plant’s drive system is located at the rear of the machine, enclosed in a soundproofed housing. For maintenance and service purposes, the casing can be opened completely on all sides. The hydraulic pump for all auxiliary drives, as well as the pump for the hydrostat, are driven via a distributing gear unit, which is flange-mounted on the drive motor. The hydrostat activates the crusher via a v-belt drive and allows adjustment of the crusher speed, replacing the typical clutch. The bypass chute is adjustable, allowing the discharged pre-screened material to be directed to either a side or main discharge belt. This option can be controlled with an easy-to-use hand gear. Both the main and side discharge belts are hydraulically operated and fold for compact transport. For more information, call 260/206-6309 or visit www.rockster.us.com. Available in the R1100/1200 impact/jaw models and the R900/800 impact/jaw models, the duplex system allows one crusher unit to exchange with the other crusher unit in approximately four to five hours using an excavator.

Kleemann Mobile Jaw Crushers Feature EVO Technology Two new Kleemann mobile jaw crushers featuring EVO technology were introduced to the North American market recently. Two new crushers are the Mobicat MC 110 Ri EVO and the MC 110 Zi EVO. The MC 110 Ri EVO has a vibratory feeder with integrated grizzly, while the MC 110 Zi EVO incorporates a vibrating feeder with an independent, double-deck, heavyduty prescreen. Both feature a crusher inlet of 28 by 44 in. (71 by 112 cm). Either way, wear in the system is reduced because medium and smaller gradations bypass the crusher, with an increase in end product quality through discharge of fines via the side discharge conveyor. A bypass flap provides easy diversion of the material flow, eliminating the need for a blind deck. Both machines have been completely redesigned with a lighter transport weight to ease portability, with the MC 110 Ri EVO weighing 85,000 lb. (38,555 kg), and the MC 110 Zi EVO weighing 87,100 lb. (39,508 kg). The new Mobicat MC 110 Zi and MC 110 Ri expand Kleemann’s popular EVO Contractor Line of crushers. The new Mobicat EVO series has been redesigned from scratch, thus allowing the combination of new features such as the hopper walls

permits extremely efficient operation with low fuel consumption, and allows optimal loading of the crusher. Beneath the crusher a deflector plate keeps tramp metal from degrading the conveyor belt. The Kleemann Continuous Feed System (CFS) manages a more equal loading of the crushing area, in which the conveying frequencies of the feeder trough and the prescreen are adapted independently of each other to the level of the crusher, thus significantly boosting performance. The new Mobicat crushers incorporate a newly designed longer swing jaw, which prevents blocking of coarse material while moving all mounting elements of the crusher jaw from the wear area. In addition, the transfer from the prescreen or the feeder trough is designed so material simply tilts The MC 110 Ri EVO has a vibratory feeder with integrated grizzly, while the MC 110 Zi EVO incorporates a vibrating feeder with an independent, double-deck, heavy- into the crushing jaw, providing an even material flow. Montabert V4500 Features M-Series Works for Number of Variable-Speed Technology Applications in North America The Montabert V4500 heavy-range hydraulic breaker features an automatic two-speed variation system — adjusting its impact energy and striking rate to deliver high energy per blow on hard ground and high frequency on soft ground — providing construction and demolition contractors, as well as aggregates producers. Designed for use on excavators weighing between 99,200 and 176,400 lbs. (45,000 and 80,000 kg), the fully hydraulic breaker model delivers between 520 and 710 blows per minute. The 9,921-lb. (4,500 kg) V4500 requires a hydraulic flow rate of between 74 and 100-1/2 gal. (280 and 380 L) per minute and is rated within the 13,000 ft.-lb. impact energy class. Standard features include a blank-fire protection system that reduces harmful metal-to-metal contact and an energy recovery system that recycles recoil energy from the piston to increase strike power. In addition, the V4500 hydraulic breaker’s upper and lower suspension extends the excavator’s work-group life by absorbing harmful vibrations, while an automatic, cradle-mounted grease station delivers continuous oil flow — reducing bushing and tool wear. An optional air pressurization kit is available for underwater applications. The V4500 hydraulic breaker’s simple design enables operators to more Designed for use on excavators weighing between efficiently complete routine 99,200 and 176,400 lbs. A large screener crusher attachment (sizes range from 5 to 11.1 cu. yd. [3.8 to 8.5 cu m]) allows the operator to excavate and/or scoop ROM or blasted soft rock material — falling between 1 and 4 on the Mohs scale — and crush it to desired size as it is being loaded onto a truck, conveyor or stockpile. At the same time, the screener crusher attachment can screen out harder rock impurities or fines, which are then dumped into a waste or separate material pile. Powered by the carrier hydraulics through an auxiliary circuit, the attachment requires no additional fuel source to operate, and generates no emissions of its own. Different processing drum configurations allow the attachment to be adapted from crushing to screening to a combination of both, producing fragment size configurations of 50, 75, 100 and 150 mm. The attachment can be utilized in open pit, open cast and underground mines. By screening, crushing and loading in one step, the screener crusher attachment allows mining companies to reduce capital expenditures by reducing the amount of equipment needed on site. Fewer machines and at-theface processing also mean that haul fleet and processing machine wear and personnel costs are reduced. And with production rates up to 650 tph (590 t), the one-step processing also is a time saver. In North America, the M-Series is viable for a number of soft rock applications, including coal, gypsum, salt, phosphate and oil shale/oil sands, as well as for some aggregate applications. Coal Processing The screener crusher attachment is used to crush coal ROM at the same time that it loads the material into trucks, eliminating the need for more costly crushing and screening equipment. Because the coal is being crushed prior to haulage, it improves hauling efficiency by eliminating air voids in the truck bed. At the secondary stage for coal, the attachment can be used to crush and feed at power plants, harbors and depots. Gypsum Gypsum, mined from quarries or underground mines, is typically hauled to a stationary processing plant above ground. A screener crusher attachment can reduce the material size at the source, eliminating a processing stage and also increasing hauling efficiency. Set up as a fine screener, the

attachment can further break down the product and separate any hard impurities from the material. Salt In underground rock salt mines, screener crusher attachments are used to crush material directly as it is loaded onto a conveyor. By completing one processing step at the loading stage below ground, it eliminates a separate processing step at the surface. Phosphate In eastern U.S. phosphate mines, the screener crusher attachment can be used at the secondary stage, crushing the overruns from the primary stage. The 4-in. (10 cm) plus overrun material is typically considered to be a waste product. But there is enough phosphate within the rock to make it worth liberating using the large screener crusher; the leftover rock (generally limestone) can be sold as a secondary product. In the western United States, the phosphate mined in Idaho and Utah requires extensive crushing, screening and grinding to liberate the material from the rock, also providing opportunity for the screener crusher attachment to eliminate a step. Oil Shale/Oil Sands The first North American oil shale operation has only recently received permission to go online and produce 300,000 barrels as a demonstration of its capabilities. In other parts of the world, the mine-sized screener crusher attachment has been found to be especially well-suited for processing oil shale in the production of kerogen. Because it can screen out the harder limestone that often is found with oil shale, the end product that is loaded into haul trucks has already been refined and requires less processing. Additionally, more efficient loading of the desired material allows the mine owner to reduce the number of trucks in the fleet. Aggregates While the large screener crusher attachments are capable of crushing softer aggregates, such as limestone and dolomite, for more efficient loading at the face, they also have possible use as a pre-screener of fines in harder stone such as granite, trap rock and basalt. dential employment to a decline in public construction spending. “While the preliminary spending numbers for June show all segments of construction retreated from May levels, looking at the first six months of 2014 as a whole in comparison with the same period a year ago provides a more credible picture of construction trends than does a single-month snapshot,” Simonson said. “For the first half of 2014, private spending climbed at double-digit rates, while public construction shrank. I expect both patterns to continue.” Construction spending in June totaled $950 billion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate, down 1.8 percent from the upwardly revised May total, Simonson noted. Spending for the first half of 2014 as a whole increased 7.8 percent from the same period in 2013. Private nonresidential spending fell 1.6 percent in June but increased 12.6 percent year-to-date, while private residential spending slipped 0.3 percent for the month but rose 10.3 percent year-to-date. Public construction spending slumped 4.0 percent from May to June and 0.9 percent year-todate.

Association officials said a measure passed to keep federal highway and bridge funding at current levels through next spring will help, but the temporary fix will do little to clear uncertainty about future federal surface transportation investments beyond next May. They urged Congress to quickly pass a long-term surface transportation bill that includes new sources of revenue needed to avoid future funding shortfalls. They also urged Congress to enact measures to fund a range of other federal infrastructure and construction programs so contractors can make hiring and purchasing plans for next year. “As welcome as the temporary highway funding measure is, it does nothing to address the revenue challenges that keep putting federal transportation funding levels at risk,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “This is just another instance where Congressional delays are making it hard for employers to figure out how many people they should hire or how much equipment they should buy.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Hydraulic 6-in-1 Blade Takes Productivity to New Level Kubota Tractor Corporation’s hydraulic 6-in-1 blade for the KX040-4 compact excavator is now available at authorized Kubota dealerships nationwide. Operators can now tilt the blade to six different positions, making leveling and backfilling — even on inclines and uneven terrain — easier. Operators will benefit from improved efficiency and greater productivity, according to the manufacturer. “No matter how you look at Kubota’s hydraulic 6-in-1 blade, it says productivity,” said Keith Rohrbacker, Kubota construction equipment product manager. “That’s because Kubota has added performance enhancing features such as a load-sensing hydraulic system, perfectly matched speed balance, power balance and outstanding digging force that continues to make Kubota’s KX-Series an industry leading compact excavator. “The KX040-4 with the hydraulic 6-in-1 blade is ideal for contractors looking for 5ton power in a 4-ton machine with easier operation,” said Rohrbacker. “Kubota has tapped more than 40 years of engineering experience to design the 6-in-1 blade, making it a true productivity enhancer and a more rewarding operating experience.” Easier Operation, Greater Efficiency, Maximum Productivity Kubota’s new hydraulic 6-in-1 blade allows operators to save time and work more efficiently. The blade’s capacity has increased almost 0.75 cu. yds. (.6 cu m) over the standard blade, and now enables six different positions: left-end up, right-end up, left-end forward, right-end forward, raised, and lowered. Just by moving the dozer lever, operators can angle the blade right or left to push soil aside while the machine moves forward, eliminating the need for repetitive right-angle positioning while backfilling trenches. The operator can command all six functions simultaneously for more convenient landscaping, shaping and backfilling control. Additionally, contractors can operate the rocker switch on top of the blade control to tilt the blade 10 degrees up or down, and now simultaneously twist the control handle to angle the blade 25 degrees left or right.

This feature makes it ideal for contractors to dig ditches easily, flat or tilted. The angle blade also allows operators to work efficiently in confined spaces, alongside walls and near busy roads. At 5 ft. 10.9 in. (1.7 m) wide, the blade stretches across the entire machine width, even when tilted. The tilt function gives contractors the flexibility to shape foundation edges for runoff, and then complete the job with slopes and swales for ample water drainage and a professional look. To keep the soil out of the space between the blade and the tracks, the 6-in-1 blade is wider and extends past the track width by 2 in. (5 cm) on each side. The 6in-1 blade angles a wide 25 degrees to help the soil easily slide off into the trench, improving backfilling time by as much as 35 percent. Reduce Operating Costs and Tackle Even the Toughest Jobs Designed with a standard-equipped, durable bolton cutting edge (BOE) that protects the blade during heavy-duty dozing operations, the 6-in-1 blade is ideal for the toughest jobs in the most confined spaces. The tilt cylinder is covered for added durability and increased protection from soil and rocks. The reversible cutting edge is divided into two sections to easily invert the edge for continued use, easy maintenance and simple replacement. According to Rohrbacker, Kubota customers provided initial feedback stating that the two-piece bolt-on cutting edge will significantly reduce their operating costs due to its versatile design. The dozer blade’s thick side plates improve the tie-down point’s durability and allow contractors to use them as lifting points, along with the lifting point

on top of the boom for convenient 3-point craning of the KX040-4. Additionally, the float feature design makes ground finishing work quick and easy without having to adjust the dozer height. After backfilling, contractors can simply travel backwards along the

covered ditch with the dozer in the float position to put the finishing touch on a backfilled trench. For more information, call 888/4-KUBOTA or visit www.kubota.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

501 NG Provides Greater Power-to-Weight Ratio In 1969, the legendary Montabert BRH 501 hydraulic breaker revolutionized job sites worldwide, largely displacing popular air compressed demolition tools of the era. Today, the French attachment manufacturer presents the all-new, redesigned Montabert 501 Next Generation (501 NG) hydraulic breaker to commemorate its invention of the first fully hydraulic concrete breaker more than 45 years ago. Despite undergoing a 30 percent reduction in overall weight, the 1,610-lb. (730 kg) 501 NG hydraulic breaker is 75 percent more powerful than its predecessor — providing aggregates producers, as well as construction and demolition contractors, with a superior power-to-weight ratio. Designed for use with backhoe loaders and excavators weighing between 17,637 and 39,683 lbs. (8,000 and 18,000 kg), the all-purpose hydraulic breaker delivers up to 870 blows per minute — demolishing oversized boulders and thick concrete with ease. The 501 NG falls within the 2,000 footpound impact energy class and requires a hydraulic flow rate of between 21 and 37 gallons per minute (79.5 and 140 L). Standard performanceimproving features include an energy recovery system that captures and recycles recoil energy from the piston to increase strike power and a blank-fire protection system that reduces harmful metal-to-metal contact. In addition, the 501 NG hydraulic breaker’s upper and lower suspension system extends the carrier’s work-group life by absorbing harmful vibrations and stress waves. Optional features include an air pressurization kit for underwater

applications, as well as an automatic, cradle-mounted grease station that delivers continuous oil flow, reducing bushing and tool wear. In comparison to hydraulic breakers of similar size, the 501 NG requires minimal maintenance activity, increasing operator productivity. The breaker’s simple design — characterized by fewer wear parts and devoid of tie rods — enables operators to more efficiently complete routine maintenance on site and with standard tools, including the replacement of the breaker’s bushing. The breaker’s

enclosed heavy-duty housing unit further protects working parts from debris damage, while reducing noise levels on the job site. Working tools available for the 501 NG include a general purpose moil, a blunt tool and a chisel. The Montabert 501 NG hydraulic breaker is covered by a limited one-year warranty. For more information, visit www.montabert.com. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Multi-Faceted Job Involves Dismantling Bridge Over Dam DAM from page 1

Region 1.

TDOT photo

The project began in July 2012 and is currently budgeted at $69.6 million.

A Complex Project The multi-faceted road project involves no structural work to the dam itself, only the dismantling of the bridge over it. In addition, a new two-lane span over the nearby Tellico Canal is being built next to an existing two-lane bridge just to the south of the dam; and a short four-lane bridge for the highway has been completed to the dam’s north over the Norfolk Southern Railroad in Lenoir City. Nagi said that the demolition of the old Greer Bridge over the dam was decided early on in the overall project’s development because the TVA didn’t want to have to replace or widen the bridge. In addition, over the years, traffic often could not cross the bridge when maintenance was going on — a fact that was very upsetting to motorists in the area. The project also includes widening U.S. 321 to four lanes from U.S. 11 in Lenoir City, about a mile north of the dam, to just east of the Tellico Canal on the south end. This portion of U.S. 321 is the only part of the highway that is not currently four lanes from Maryville in the east to Interstate 40 in the west, according to the TDOT. Increased traffic on U.S. 321 over the last several years has made it essential that the entire route through the area be at least four lanes. The highway helps bring visitors to and from I-40 and nearby I-75 through Lenoir City and Maryville to the Great Smoky Mountains, the most visited national park in the country.

One abutment is completed on the new bridge over the Tennessee River just below the dam, and the fill is being placed for the second.

TDOT photo

A value engineering change proposal (VECP) had to be submitted by the contractor to change the footings on the Tellico Canal bridge from spread footing on a seal to a drilled-shaft design.

Halfway Through the Work The project began in July 2012 and is currently budgeted at $69.6 million. The estimated completion date, according to Nagi, is June 2016. The general contractor overseeing the work is Charles Blalock and Sons Construction in Sevierville, Tenn. The small bridge over the railroad north of the river was the first part of the project to be completed. A concrete Ibeam bridge about 180 ft. (54.9 m) long, its four lanes include a turn lane in the middle and 10-ft. (3 m) shoulders on each side. One abutment is completed on the new bridge over the Tennessee River just below the dam, and the fill is being placed for the second. In addition, construction on one of its piers had begun by that time. The span is a 1,400-ft. (426.7 m) long welded steel girder bridge. The third bridge, over the Tellico Canal (which connects Fort Loudoun Lake and

the Tellico Reservoir), also makes use of a welded steel girder and is 1,071 ft. (326.4 m) long. It is designed to be only two lanes wide and will bring southbound U.S. 321 traffic across the canal and the Tellico Parkway — right next to the existing two-lane northbound bridge of U.S. 321. Both abutments and two of the piers of the third bridge are finished, with two other piers about halfway complete, Nagi said. Widening efforts on U.S. 321 leading to the different bridges also are moving along on schedule. Just under 1 million cu. yds. (746,554.9 cu m) of borrow material has been required on the Fort Loudoun Dam project, of which about two-thirds has been placed. Nagi said the work was 50 percent complete in mid July, precisely at the scheduled halfway point of the project. Few Problems Encountered He also said that the only problems encountered have been fairly minor for a project of this complexity. For instance, it was discovered that some additional land-use permits from TVA and environmental permits associated with those permits were needed before construction could begin on the piers for the Tennessee River bridge, Nagi said. TDOT worked with the contractor, TVA and environmental agencies to obtain those permits, he said. Also, a value engineering change proposal (VECP) had to be submitted by the contractor to change the footings on the Tellico Canal bridge from spread footing on a seal to a drilled-shaft design. Nagi said this eliminated the need to drill and blast immediately next to the existing bridge footing and created less of an environmental impact. There also has been very little traffic disruption caused by the project — on both the road and on the water. Nagi said that there have only been a few nights when traffic lanes have been reduced for minor adjustments to the road. A “wakefree” zone has been placed in the canal though the work zone, but that has proven to be very little interference for boaters. Blalock and Sons has performed the majority of the work on the Fort Loudon Dam project, including all of the bridge work and most of the earthwork. The major subcontractor on the venture is Patty Construction Inc. in Lenoir City. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) equipment and answering questions about upcoming equipment,” Glover said. “At the same time, he has not tried to sell us on a new product until it is proven through Benchmark, not just through Topcon. He is working with us to get the best products for our applications and not overselling us equipment that might not be beneficial to our needs.” Recently, Glover Construction has been utilizing Topcon’s newest blade-control automation system, the machine control (MC), on many of its tractors and excavators. “We run seven Caterpillar D6s with their automatic systems,” Glover said. “We just started using the MC system on our excavators. It is a very unique tool because you can see your grade as you cut it and it eliminates your having to keep a bulldozer there to keep your cut on grade.” Topcon Makes Big Projects Easy Glover has been using the Topcon system on a huge $40 million Rooms To Go project in nearby Dunn, N.C., made up of a warehouse, distribution center and retail showroom. The construction firm has three tractors at the site, each with Topcon automatic systems, as well as one Cat 349 excavator with

a Topcon GPS guiding it. In the course of building a 1.5 million sq. ft. (139,354 sq m) building pad, Glover said that his crews encountered a “very wet site with unclassified soil.” Through their efforts, though, they were able to “work” the soil and tighten it up before putting down stone for the build pad. In all, about 600,000 sq. yds. (501,676.4 sq m) of soil and dirt was moved, Glover said. “That is not as large a dirt job as we are used to because the Dunn area is relatively flat but the soil type made it a difficult project because the water table was right at the surface,” Glover said. “It was clay soil that didn’t want to give up water but with our fleet of articulated tractors with big, 42-inch disc blades behind them, we were able to dry it up and get it to where we got compaction and stabilization of the soil.” According to Glover, most contractors don’t keep many discs that big in their stock, but with all the base and landfill work that his company does, they have a significant collection of them on hand to work clay in order to get permeability out of the clay. Big Machines Improve Efficiency The reason that Glover Construction uses some of the largest-sized excavators and see GLOVER page 80

Glover Crews Move Thousands of Tons of Dirt on Amazon Job GLOVER from page 72

dozers available, according to Glover, is simply because bigger machines move dirt quicker and more efficiently. “Larger equipment means less cycle time between trucks and when time is tight you have got to move stuff fast and get the bulk dirt out of the way so that you can start grading and moving the project forward,” Glover said. The company recently helped build a massive new Amazon.com warehouse in Tennessee that needed to be completed quickly. As a result, Glover’s crews were moving 40,000 tons (36,287 t) of dirt a day. “The only way to do that is with big machines,” Glover said. “So we traditionally run Cat 385s with 10-yard buckets on them or three buckets on a Volvo A40. Forty to 45 seconds and you have got a load. You can’t get that production with anything else.” As far as dozers, the company typically operates Cat D8s to go along with its D6s. Glover characterized the D6 as “probably the most versatile tractor Caterpillar makes.”

Humble Origins Glover Construction was founded in the 1950s by John Glover I, who started his life of hard, honest work during the Great Depression by hauling sand to his grandmother’s smokehouse for a penny a load using a goat-drawn cart. When the senior Glover was older, he began work in the earthmoving and logging business before buying his first Cat D2 and building what would eventually become Glover Construction. His two sons followed him into the business and, later, his namesake grandson. Today, the company employs 37 articulated trucks and 53 tractors with custom-made bottom-dump trailers. In addition, Glover’s huge office and shop complex serves clients in multiple states on the eastern seaboard. And almost six decades after the firm’s creation, three generations of Glovers are still active in the business, including the founding John Glover.
