AP BUSINESS WRITER

In the age of shopping malls, strip malls and online shopping we still crave the human interaction derived from shopping in an open market. Think about most places where people go to recreate, they are typically filled with other people looking to be where “things are happening.” This urge goes back to our earliest times on the planet. The city of Rock Hill, S.C., has picked up on that idea and has decided that encouraging sales of local goods and produce benefits just about everyone. So Rock Hill has put its money where it would do the most good in encouraging local producers to keep doing what they do so well. Rock Hill has made an investment of $552,000 in a market square in the heart of the city. The plan for this development will feature a parking lot in the middle of the site and then on each side there will be covered spaces for vendors. This development will be called the “Old Towne Market.” Leitner Construction, a local Rock Hill contractor, did the demolition work and assembled the new

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (AP) A partnership between two behemoth builders of excavating machinery said Oct. 5 it plans to add 340 jobs at a Forsyth County plant in return for incentives of more than $5 million. Deere-Hitachi Construction Machinery Corp. said it will expand its Kernersville plant that now employs more than 700. The plant is a part of a 24-year partnership Hitachi Tokyo-based between Construction Machinery and Moline, Ill.based Deere & Co. to manufacture both Hitachi and Deere brand excavators. The expansion will allow DeereHitachi to increase production of excavators for the mining and construction industries, the company said. State and local governments have promised Deere-Hitachi tax breaks and other incentives worth more than $5 million if the company adds the jobs within four years and sustains them for nine years. The jobs will pay an average of about $42,102 plus benefits, $486 less than the average Forsyth County wage.

Key Construction Material Prices Increase The cost of key construction materials increased in August and year-to-year, resuming a trend that has forced contractors to pay more for materials even as competitive pressures restrain prices for finished projects, according to an analysis of federal figures released today by the Associated General Contractors of America.

“After years of depressed construction activity, the last thing contractors need is to see materials price increases further erode their already slim margins,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “This isn’t the kind of economic recovery most contractors spent the past few years praying for.”

The producer price index for inputs to construction — covering materials that go into every type of project, plus items consumed by contractors such as diesel fuel — increased 0.9 percent in August and 1.0 percent from a year earlier, Sandherr noted. The price increases resume a longer-term trend that is forcing consee MATERIALS page 72

(L-R): John Coughlin, president of Linder Industrial Machinery Company; Chris Wilkes of Linder in Charlotte; and Lock Rowe and Jody Phillips, both of Smith Rowe, Mt. Airy, N.C. Rowe and Phillips both said that they like the durability of the Komatsu machines they have acquired from Linder.

Linder Holds Its Inaugural Oktoberfest in Columbia, S.C.

L

inder Industrial Machinery held its first Oktoberfest open house Oct. 5 in Columbia, S.C. “This is our first shot at our Oktoberfest and what stirred the idea is the Wirtgen product line during our trips to Germany,” said John Coughlin, president of Linder Industrial Machinery. “Going there two years ago, I felt there was a good mix of the fall time of year and the German theme. It was just a good fit and a good time of year to bring people together, not just to look at equipment, but also to have a little bit of sharing of ideas, meeting people and having a good time.” Plenty of vendors and Linder staff were on hand to meet with guests, while an Oktoberfest band provided the musical backdrop as contractors and their families checked out equipment and enjoyed a German-themed lunch. see LINDER page 53

Talking Komatsu dozers (L-R) are Chris Wilkes, Andy Chapman and Bill Winters, all of Linder Industrial Machinery Company, and Clary Hood of Clary Hood Inc., Spartanburg, S.C.

Justin Palvere of Genesis Attachments goes over the product line with Alton and Linda Hutto of Lad Corp in Columbia, S.C.

Linder Industrial Machinery had many machines on display for its customers to look over, including the complete lineup from the Wirtgen Group, which included pavers, compactors, milling machines and impact crushers and screening plants. Discussing the offerings (L-R) are Mike Crenshaw of King Asphalt in Liberty, S.C.; Rick Brown of Wirtgen America; and Bo Loy and Mike Cornell, both of Linder.

Under the tent — set up to provide protection from the sun and rain — were many vendors Linder Industrial machinery works with providing additional support to its customers. Fred Counts (L) of FQS Bear Equipment in Lexington welcomes Robert Armstrong of Armstrong Construction in Columbia, S.C.

The Oktoberfest band set the mood for the event.

I-40 Project…

TDOT Proceeds With Its Largest Design-Build Job NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) A $56 million project to widen Interstate 40 in Wilson County is more notable than the average road construction project. That’s because it is the largest design-build project to date that the Tennessee Department of Transportation has bid out. Design-build is a type of contracting that allows a single firm

Supporters of design-bid contracts say projects get done quicker because construction can start before the design is complete. to design a project and construct it. Typically, the state would competitively bid the design and construction work separately. Supporters of design-bid contracts say projects get done quicker because construction can start before the design is complete. Critics say taxpayers can end up paying more for work because only a few large companies can compete. The process is becoming more popular across the nation. For example, New York State allowed it last year for the first time and the Federal Highway Administration has encouraged states to use it. “It is going to be a tool we will continue to use as we go forward,” TDOT Commissioner John Schroer told The Tennessean. “It gives us a great opportunity. It helps us move things quicker.” The I-40 project will widen the roadway from four to eight lanes along a 7-mi. (11 km) stretch in Wilson County, where close to 70,000 vehicles travel each day. Paul Degges, TDOT’s deputy commissioner and chief engineer, said officials decided to start small with designbuild in an effort to get experience with it before delving into a large project. He said the department used it in 2008 on an exit ramp. It also was used on a project on state Route 317 in Hamilton County. Degges said the process saves time, and that’s an important factor on heavily traveled roads. The I-40 project was awarded in December and work began in the last month with a completion date in December 2013. “We have easily cut a year off the traditional development,” Degges said. Degges acknowledged that the design-build contracts don’t allow for the same competition as traditional ones, but he said TDOT does not bid them the same way. Because they are more complicated and more expensive to put together, he said the agency seeks bids from about three firms and provides a stipend to losing ones.

Link-Belt Holds CraneFest 2012 at Its HQ in Lexington, Ky.

L

ink-Belt Cranes held CraneFest 2012 at its company headquarters in Lexington, Ky., during the week of Sept. 23. Nearly 1,000 crane dealers, rental houses and end users from the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Panama, South Africa, Trinidad and the United Kingdom attended the event in groups of 200 to 250 for a series of twoday sessions that ran throughout the week. On the Friday before CraneFest began, attendees of the SC&RA Crane & Rigging Workshop also were treated to a plant tour and luncheon at the Lexington facility. This year marked the sixth such event held by Link-Belt. On the day of arrival, guests were treated to dinner at Keeneland, noted as one of the Top 10 thoroughbred racetracks in North America and equally famous for its annual horse auctions that attract buyers worldwide. The next day’s events began with a welcome from LinkBelt Vice President, Marketing, Sales & Customer Support, Bill Stramer and opening comments from Link-Belt Company President, Chuck Martz. After a short video presentation outlining Link-Belt’s development as a world leader in the designing and building of cranes, attendees conducted a tour of the company’s manufacturing facility. Throughout the plant tour, presenters detailed the strategic thinking that went into every aspect of the design and construction process. The company also exercises a significant commitment to a clean environment with a strong policy geared toward recycling, reduction and reuse of materials and resources throughout the operation. After the plant tour, attendees went outside for a live rollout of Link-Belt’s product line and lunch. After lunch, attendees were able to review each crane at staged demonstration areas and also were encouraged to get a closeup look at the cranes and sit at the controls where they were filled in on equipment specifications by company representatives. Two all-new cranes debuted at Crane Fest 2012; the 80ton (72.5 t) RTC-8080 Series II, featuring platform guardrails, a three-piece bi-fold fly, and improved capacity

Volvo Rents, a worldwide provider of small-to-medium sized construction equipment, has opened a new rental center in Huntsville, Ala., its third in the state, joining existing locations in Foley and Mobile. The decision to open the new office follows what the company said is forecasted growth in the equipment rental industry, as well as projected increase in construction spending in Huntsville. According to Volvo Rents, recent data from the American Rental Association (ARA) shows that overall North American equipment rental industry revenue is expected to increase at least 6.9 percent to $33.5 billion in 2012. Further, the ARA forecasts annual growth in rental revenue to reach $53.1 billion by 2016. Another forecast by McGraw Hill Construction said the growth of construction spending in the greater Huntsville area is projected to total nearly $5.6 billion by the end of 2016. “We believe there is tremendous opportunity in the market, and specifically in the state of Alabama,” said Mike Crouch, vice president of business development of Volvo Rents. “Our strong brand recognition, coupled with the growing demand for equipment rental, made this decision an easy one and gives us every reason to look to the future with great enthusiasm.” In addition to Volvo Rents’ expanding line of Volvo compact equipment — such as backhoe and skid steer loaders, compact wheel loaders, compact excavators and compaction equipment — the rental center carries a comprehensive line of essential equipment and tools for the construction, commercial, industrial and homeowner markets. The focus is on daily, weekly and monthly rentals. “We understand our industry is a tough one, and we have geared our operations to meet the demands of a hard-hitting, no-nonsense, fiscally responsible client,” said Volvo Rents General Manager Greg Moore. “At Volvo Rents, it’s not just about renting you equipment, it’s about our working together to get the job done.” Located at 3131 Jordan Lane, NW, the new store will be open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with 24-hour service available every day of the week. Ring Power Board of Directors Elects New Executive Veep Ring Power Corporation Chairman and President Randal L. Ringhaver and the Board of Directors recently announced the election of David Alban as executive vice president — sales and corporate secretary. The board also appointed new officers Alex Posson as vice president — director of human resources and Steve Gambill as vice president — power systems product support. In his new role as executive vice president — sales, Alban will have responsibility for several Ring Power divisions including: new and used heavy equipment, Cat equipment rentals, International, crane and lift trucks. In an effort to efficiently grow the business and enhance customers’ satisfaction in all areas, Alban will work closely with the senior vice presidents of these divisions on a daily basis. In 2001, Alban began his Ring Power career in the sales training program, spending time working in the service shops, learning firsthand what happens day-to-day. Alban also worked in the heavy equipment rental department before moving into sales. He earned his first managerial role in 2002, leading the newly launched agricultural equipment division. In 2004, when the Six Sigma initiative began, Alban was selected as a project leader. Alban was then promoted to general

service manager of heavy equipment of the northern half of Ring Power’s Cat territory. Since 2009 Alban had served as vice president and corporate secretary. Yancey Truck Centers Holds Grand Opening in Columbus Yancey Truck Centers held a grand opening celebration Oct. 4 for its new Columbus, Ga., sales and service center. The Columbus opening marks the seventh Yancey Truck Centers location to open in South Georgia. Officially opened three months ago, the 15,000-sq.-ft. Columbus facility sits on five acres, which had previously been a Nissan car dealership. The building was modified to accommodate trucks with an increase in the height of the service bay entrances. Other modifications included installation of new doors for six drive-thru bays. The facility also features a covered steam bay and two covered service advisor bays. Yancey Truck Centers quickly established a fully stocked parts department, as well as a daily shuttle of parts to and from the other Yancey Truck Centers locations. Parts delivery from the Columbus location directly to the customer also is available. “If we don’t have it on the shelf, we can have it the next day from one of our other locations, said Eric McKnight, Yancey Truck Centers on-highway product support general manager. McKnight added that the

New Design Unveiled for Capitol Christmas Tree Haul

Mack Trucks unveiled the custom-decorated MACK Pinnacle model, which will be driven by former U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell as he hauls the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree from Colorado to Washington, D.C. The theme of the design is “From One National Treasure to Another,” pointing to Mack’s 112-year legacy. The truck features Mack the Bulldog hauling a massive tree through the snow, with large mountains in the background. “The Capitol Christmas Tree is a great tradition in the United States, and Mack is proud to once again participate in the project,” said John Walsh, Mack vice president of marketing. “The design for this year’s Pinnacle model captures Mack’s legendary durability and reliability in a unique and fun way. ” Campbell, who represented Colorado from 1993-2005, also helped transport the Capitol Christmas Tree in 2000. “It is a privilege to drive the tree for the U.S. Capitol from Colorado this year,” said Campbell. “It’s just as exciting, though, to get behind the wheel of a Mack truck again. I know I can count on a great ride and a uniquely American holiday experience.” Choose Outdoors, a national nonprofit coalition for outdoor recreation, is coordinating the 2012 Capitol Christmas Tree tour with the

White River National Forest. The Capitol Christmas Tree tour officially begins Nov. 3 in Meeker, Colo., where the tree will be harvested from the 2.3 million-acre White River National Forest, located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Following a celebration in Meeker, the tree will be wrapped and embark on its route to the nation’s capital, stopping at numerous cities and towns throughout Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The SmartWay-certified Pinnacle Axle Back model sleeper is equipped with a trailer, donated by Hale Trailer Brake and Wheel of Allentown, Pa. The trailer will be fitted with a custom-built cradle to support the tree’s branches. The tree will find its holiday home on the Capitol lawn shortly after Thanksgiving, when it will be decorated with ornaments made by Colorado youth and lit with 10,000 lowenergy LED lights in a ceremony led by Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH). Mack most recently provided a truck for the Capitol Christmas Tree Project in 2011, when the tree traveled cross country from Stanislaus National Forest in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. Since 1964, U.S. national forests rotate the responsibility of providing a tree for the Capitol.

Crushing, Screening & Recycling Section Flex-Mat 3 Helps Miss. Firm Surmount ‘Nightmare’ Job After beginning his career in construction and demolition (C&D), Tim Lipsmeyer and a partner bought a small mobile recycle plant in 1997 to produce recycled asphalt and concrete. Southern Crushing, a Mississippibased operation, now produces ½-in. (1.3 cm) minus recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) used for road projects in Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas. Depending on the volume of fines in the material being screened, the plant can produce upwards of 140 tph (127 t). However, it had been experiencing blinding and pegging of its ½-in. steel woven wire due to the sticky nature of the recycled asphalt. Many days, Lipsmeyer was being forced to shut down for 30 minutes every two hours to clean the screen media that was blinding up to 6 in. (15 cm) deep. Each day, losing two hours of production time was costing the operation more than 200 tons of potentially sellable material. So, Lipsmeyer turned to Major Wire’s Flex-Mat 3 Tensioned screen cloth to eliminate the blinding problem and increase his potential monthly sellable product by at least 4,000 tons (3,629 t). “We had been offered a job in northeast Arkansas requiring that we screen asphalt in the winter, which is a nightmare because the wet asphalt sticks so badly,” said Lipsmeyer, owner of Southern Crushing. “I had seen advertisements for Flex-Mat 3, so I decided to give it a chance. In spite of my skepticism, Flex-Mat 3 was the first product that did what it said it would.” Southern Crushing employs a portable Eagle 500-05 crusher and two 4 by 14-ft. (1.2 by 4.3 m) double-deck Cedarapids tensioned screen boxes. In-spec material is screened through by the bottom decks and the oversized product is re-circulated back through the crusher. Previously, when there was precipitation of any kind, the screen media would blind and the operation couldn’t run. So, Lipsmeyer first tried stainless steel slotted screen media on the bottom deck of one screen to eliminate the problem. But, it caused another problem, allowing oversized product to fall through, resulting in out-ofspec product stockpiles. He was forced to switch back to square woven wire and deal with the blinding or use 3/16-in. (.5 cm) wire

openings. Major Wire Industries Limited’s Flex-Mat 3 high-performance, self-cleaning screen media provided a better solution. Available for flat-surface and tensioned screen decks, it

allows producers to increase screen open area, create more screening action with the vibrating wires and eliminate blinding and pegging problems to achieve more throughput of spec material. Its distinctive lime-

green polyurethane strips bond individual wires and allow them to vibrate independently at different frequencies. With more screening action, more properly sized material falls through instead of sticking to the wire. “Now, we use Flex-Mat 3 Tensioned panels on the bottom deck of one screen with a ½-inch opening,” Lipsmeyer said. “We are able to produce spec RAP and clean out fines from crushed concrete no matter how wet it is. We can even screen in a complete downpour.” Since purchasing Flex-Mat 3 from Major Wire, Southern Crushing has screened more than 40,000 tons over the original panels — which are still operational and being used today. The operation even ran through winter, only stopping when the snow fall got so heavy that it compromised the belts and froze up the screen box. When asked about the future relationship between Southern Crushing and Major Wire, Lipsmeyer replied, “I very seldom buy anything that works like it says it will. With this kind of success, Flex-Mat 3 will definitely be a part of Southern Crushing’s future.” For more information, call 901/409-1224 or visit www.majorwire.cc.

Southern Crushing has screened more than 40,000 tons (36,287 t) of recycled asphalt and concrete, often wet and sticky, over the original Flex-Mat 3 panels.

Atlas Copco Adds Two Bulk Pulverizers to Silent Line Atlas Copco has added two models of bulk pulverizers, the BP 2050 and BP 3050, to its range of silent demolition tools. Key design features include a specially angled shape and wide jaw for improved access to material and a speed valve for a more rapid open and close cycle. “The speed valve actually helps lower the overall cost of ownership,” said Keith Becker, product development specialist of Atlas Copco hydraulic attachments. “If you reduce your opening and closing time, or cycle time, you’re reducing machine hours, operator hours and fuel consumption while increasing production.” “Another feature that cuts down your time on the job and saves money is the high, constant power that these units generate at the jaw tips, even when they’re almost closed,” added Becker. “That extra power means you can use fewer bites to demolish a structure, for example. Every bite adds up. ” The wide jaw not only makes it easier to feed in material, it also aids in the clean separation of rebar and concrete. The large jaw dimensions enable a high production output as well. Each model comes with a replaceable tooth-plate and cutting blades on the jaw which results in less down time in the field. Common applications for the new bulk pulverizers include secondary reduction and separation, secondary demolition of reinforced concrete structures and separation of concrete and rebar. When equipped with the optional 360-degree hydraulic rotation device (BP 2050 R and BP 3050 R) the units can be used for efficient primary demolition of ceilings and walls. The Atlas Copco bulk pulverizers are available for carriers in the 18- to 35-ton classes. For more information, call 800/732-6762 or visit www.atlascopco.us.

Greg Stach, engineering manager of KPI-JCI, said the addition of Baer to the engineering team fills a great need in the department. “Because Kolberg-Pioneer Inc. offers turnkey product management, we design, fabricate and build our own structures to support this equipment. It is wonderful to have a professional engineer like Chris for these product lines,” Stach said. “He is a great asset to our team.” For more information, call 605/668-2524 or visit www.kpijci.com.

‘Stumpiranha’ Delivers Complete Stump Removal The “Stumpiranha” from Leading Edge Attachments Inc. is a stump removal tool that replaces the slow process of stump grinding, and allows for complete removal without leaving grindings or stump remains that can cause sinkholes later. Stump grinders are expensive, slow, and tap into the hydraulics of a machine, which can introduce contaminants in the excavator’s complex hydraulic system. The Stumpiranha attaches to an excavator or backhoe similar to a bucket, and allows the stump to be cut and ripped under the stump from the roots. The staggered sharp pointed blades cut the roots under the stump one pointed blade at a time, thus allowing the maximum cutting force to be achieved, according to the manufacturer. The vertical arms of the tool straddle the stump while the blades rip the roots below, thus allowing the stump to be removed completely, only leaving the ends of the roots. The stump can then be scooped up and loaded into a truck, without leaving insect infested grindings at the site. The Stumpiranha is manufactured in the United States using high strength T1 alloy steel for abusive, abrasive and cold weather conditions. The price for a 20 ton excavator model currently is $8,690. For more information, visit www.stumpiranha.com.

Genesis GSG Scrap Grapple Now Available in Six Sizes Genesis Attachments has added two sizes to its GSG scrap grapple line, increasing the number of models to six. The orange-peel type scrap grapples are now available in 2.0 and 2.5 cu. yd. (1.5 and 1.9 cu m ) sizes in addition to the .75 to 1.5 cu. yd. (.6 to 1.2 cu m ) models originally offered. Designed to reduce maintenance, improve durability, lower operating costs and enhance safety, the Genesis Scrap Grapple features: • Identical hardened steel bearings with dust seals at all pivot points to keep out contaminants • A heavy-duty cylinder guarding system that protects the cylinders and internal components and is easily removed for maintenance • Reverse-mounted cylinders that protect rods from damage • Large-bore hydraulic cylinders to maximize clamping force • Long-life, abrasion-resistant steel tips that are easily replaced with a simple perimeter weld.

“Increasing the number of models was the next logical step in the GSG evolution,” said Dan Raihala, Genesis design engineer. “Coupled with the GSG’s low maintenance features, larger capacity grapples will enable Genesis customers to further increase productivity.” Genesis also offers a wide tine variety with flat bottom or pointed tine shapes, and three spade types — half-, narrow- and wide-width to meet specific application needs. Additional GSG features include largediameter hardened steel pins with integrated shear-proof retainers, high-torque 360 degree continuous rotation for better material access and placement, and an overall footprint designed to easily fit inside trailers. Rock Hill Bets on Old-Fashioned Way of Doing Shopping MARKET from page 1

parking lot with the construction of new curb and gutter, new pavement, new concrete pavers and a sheltered overhang on each building at the site. The plan for the site includes a completion date before the first week in December or the last week in November — just in time for the city of Rock Hill’s annual Christmasville celebration. Work began on the project during the first week of August 2012. “The main challenges on this job always come with working with existing buildings,” explained Mack Leitner. “Often you don’t know what you’re going to run into when that is the case. The new development will include steel overhangs and roof structures that are fiberglass to let the light in. “We also had mini-excavators on site when we put the storm drainage in and when we did some of the demolition, larger excavators for the latter work. Rogers Grading had the larger equipment on this job; most of the smaller equipment was mine.” This project is one that the city started thinking about five years ago, just before the recession. After that point a lot of projects were put on hold. “The idea was to create a permanent space for a downtown farmers’ market and other outdoor market activities,” explained Stephen Turner, Rock Hill’s director economic and urban development department. “This area also could include space for arts and crafts, antiques, flea markets, yard sales and a lot of different things.” As of this writing there will be a small charge to the vendors, depending upon who is organizing the event, how they are organizing it and what sort of fee structure they’re setting up. From the city’s point of view the primary focus of the project is to create a space where events could take place involving mainly outdoor marketing. “We started looking at that, there was an old parking lot that we really needed to do something with anyway,” added Turner. “The asphalt was worn out, there was no landscaping to speak of and it was stuck in between two privately-owned buildings. Those buildings were either vacant or underperforming. So the bottom line is that we came up with the idea to create this public market space in the parking lot.” From there they decided to use it as an opportunity to encourage the redevelopment of these privately owned buildings and to get some tenants and activities and things back into Rock Hill’s downtown. There are now new facades on those buildings at the sides of the market space. “We’ve taken all the depth on those buildings and made the depth useful by creating new storefronts on the sides. There will be an assortment of smaller tenant spaces, some

1,000 to 1,500 sq. ft. per tenant as well as a new wood-fired pizza restaurant opening at this location later in the year. Also slated to be opened is an inside space called the Old Towne Market Hall. This will be 3,000 sq. ft. for an indoor event space that will be used for our markets. We may place vendors in the indoor space, but it’s a space we plan on keeping simple.” This area will consist of concrete floors, brick walls and a small catering kitchen. The area will be available for anything from family reunions and parties to musical events, market activities — anything anyone could think of could take place in that space, according to Turner. “We’re hoping that work will be finished by November 2012. This was intended to be a partnership between the city and two private owners. But due to the recession it was impossible for those owners to find tenants; private development had come to a standstill. “This is a pretty simple project. But I think the complexity of it was taking the market idea and fitting it with the physical layout of the canopies lining the wall; we’re attaching publicly owned canopies to privately owned buildings. It was a fair amount of work to put together all of the necessary arrangements between public and private parties on this project,” Turner added. The plan and intention is that this will be a year-round development. Use of the open market will undoubtedly drop off in the winter months. But the space in the Old Towne Market Hall can be used year-round. “We hope that this will be a center of

activity for downtown and create some new reasons for lots of people to come downtown,” added Turner. “We looked around at other cities that have very successful markets. Among these was Roanoke, Va., which has a tremendous farmers market in its downtown. The ones we studied range from very informal things where people set up tents in a vacant lot to things that are very highly organized and programmed, happening year-round.” The farmers market in the past has been very irregular and informal, just setting up in parking lots and moving from place to place each year. The city had taken over managing the farmers market for two years. That was part of the strategy; if the city was going to create a space for such a development it would have to have a successful market. Lear’s Welding, Rock Hill, S.C., is doing the fabricating and installing of the steel supports that will hold the sheet metal canopies at the market. It used a Series 500C International boom truck and a Komatsu TH13 excavator also worked on-site in the central parking area. This equipment is owned by Leitner Construction. Colton Builders, McConnells, S.C., worked on the Market Hall and pizza shop space. For work in this area it used its own equipment, including a Yanmar 35 hp miniexcavator and a medium-sized Bobcat 773 skid steer. Lear’s Welding’s biggest challenge has been dealing with the old building on-site. “It is a challenge trying to match up our structures to the crooked walls and trying to use the old beams that they might have in

place inside the wall,” explained Jack Lear, Lear’s Welding owner. “We’re approximately 35 percent complete with this job and have more supports to mount on the other side of the market square. We have all the steel fabricated here at our shop and have about five more truck loads to take up to the site. We are building all the steel supports ourselves and putting it up; we fabricate every bit of this material as well as installing it.” Lear’s Welding has been in business 18 years and also does a lot of work for Westinghouse in Charlotte, N.C., as well as work for Duke Power and many jobs for different companies in the area. It also works with carbon and aluminum. It helped Leitner Construction with a recent job on the Winthrop University campus in Rock Hill. “The welding is all done by certified welders. We also did work on the recently completed Velodrome here in Rock Hill, completing the entire set of aluminum handrails at that site. Our firm also works with Jeff Rogers of Carolina Floors. “As long as the rain holds off I believe we will be able to complete this work on schedule by the end of November. My contract includes having the metal primed; they are going to paint the metal supports themselves.” The crew at present consists of three workers on the job. Six more workers were planned to start in early October. “We have had as many as 14 workers on this job at one time,” Lear continued. “We’ll probably have 10 people on the job installing the steel at the height of our work schedule. Work doesn’t happen during the rain because someone could slip or get shocked on the job. “We are good at what we do. When something goes wrong with the pre-fab structures or materials, we are the ones they call to straighten everything out,” he concluded. So far the weather has cooperated with the work schedule of the project. The daily rains of summer 2012 in Rock Hill have given way to clear skies for the most part as dayto-day construction tasks are carried out. In the end, the old ways of trade, the ones that have always worked, will continue to add to downtown Rock Hill’s growing appeal. Nothing beats a place where people can enjoy some time away from the bustle of interstate highways, the nameless strip malls, cookie cutter fast food places and impersonal big box stores. In the case of Rock Hill’s Old Towne Market, as the saying goes, what’s old is new again. Ritchie Bros. Holds Huge Grand Opening Sale in N.C.

(L-R): John Fairley, Dave Ritchie and Joe Boyle, all of Ritchie Bros., are looking forward to many years of hosting successful sales from the new Durham facility. An aerial view of the auction site yard at the brand new Ritchie Bros. permanent auction site in Raleigh-Durham, N.C.

T

he Ritchie Bros. two-day Grand Opening sale at its new RaleighDurham, N.C., location was deemed a huge success by participants on all sides of the auction block. Held Sept. 26 and 27, the sale focused on the mining industry and with the positive response it met with, it could turn out to be the first of several mining equipment sales. More than 2,100 bidders, 1,300 of them online, registered to snap up more than $76 million in equipment that was presented in Adam Bryne of Ritchie Bros. catches the next bidder for the pair of Cat 725 articu- 300-plus lots. Bidders came from as far as Australia and Hong Kong, with 96 percent lated trucks.

of the equipment being purchased by buyers outside of North Carolina. Popular items included 60 Caterpillar D11 crawler tractors, as well as skid steers, articulated trucks, motorgraders, dozers and loaders. Many items were 2010 and 2011 model years, the availability of which have been fairly scarce in recent years. In addition to being a success for buyers and sellers, the event also was a success for the Amran Shriners of North Carolina, who received more than $7,000 during a charity auction of items donated by local businesses. see RITCHIE page 70

The CPLT M10 features four, 1,000-W metal halide lamps, powered by a Kohler Tier IV diesel engine with a brushless alternator.

Utilizing metal halide lamp technology, the Chicago Pneumatic CPLT M10 light tower efficiently turns electrical energy into light. This technology requires less power, produces more light and provides the ideal lighting for working, sport and event areas, according to the manufacturer. The CPLT M10 features four, 1,000-W metal halide lamps, powered by a Kohler Tier IV diesel engine with a brushless alternator. Its mast extends vertically over 31 ft. (9m) and can be rotated 360 degrees. One CPLT M10 Light Tower can illuminate up to 7.5 acres (30,400 cu m). The CPLT M10 is easy to operate and extremely light and maneuverable, making it very simple to position at the desired

location for optimal work area lighting. Weighing 1,800 lb. (815 kg), the CPLT M10 collapses to 182- by 48- by 66-in. (461 by 123 by 168 cm) for transport. It also features a metallic enclosure with wide service doors, an electrical cubicle for control and protection, stabilization legs and an on-road undercarriage. Other features include the 30 gal. The county’s unemployment rate in August was 9.5 percent. State job-hunters have generally dangled help from taxpayers to sway corporate decisions if the wages were above average, though that isn’t required by policy or state law. But fewer manufacturing companies like Deere-Hitachi are planning big expansions. The loss of manufacturing jobs was felt especially hard in North Carolina, which in August posted the fifth-highest jobless rate in the country at 9.7 percent. Almost 22 percent of North Carolina’s economy was based on manufacturing before the Great Recession began in December 2007, compared to the national average of 13 percent, according to a recent report by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Global Research Institute. Local officials said last month Deere-Hitachi was mulling whether to expand in Kernersville or expand a Japanese plant instead. During Gov. Beverly Perdue’s recent visit to Japan, she met with executives at Hitachi to discuss its current presence in North Carolina and opportunities for it to grow.

AGC Blames ‘Looming Threat of Tax Increases’ for Problem MATERIALS from page 1

tractors to pay more for materials even as they struggle to raise prices for finished projects, the association official noted. Sandherr observed that rising prices for several key construction materials produced the latest monthly and year-to-year increases. The price index for diesel fuel jumped 8.7 percent in August and 5.2 percent from a year ago. Prices for gypsum products are up 17.8 percent compared to August 2011 and up 0.3 percent compared to July 2012. The index for architectural coatings, while unchanged compared to July, is up 11.7 percent year-over-year. And lumber and plywood costs increased by 2.3 percent in August and are up 6.9 percent compared to August 2011. A few materials posted substantial declines for the month and year, Sandherr added. Prices for copper and brass mill shapes dropped 1.0 percent for the month and are now down 14.0 percent year-to-year. The index for steel mill products fell by 2.5 percent compared to July 2012 and is down 8.2 percent compared to August 2011. And the price for aluminum mill shapes is down 0.7 percent for the month and 9.8 percent

compared to the same point last year. The price indexes for finished nonresidential buildings, which measure what contractors estimate they would charge to put up new structures, were mixed for the month and up only slightly year-over-year, Sandherr noted. The index for new industrial buildings was unchanged compared to July, but up 1.9 percent year-over-year. The index for new office construction also was unchanged for the month but climbed 2.4 percent for the year. The index for new school construction declined by 0.1 percent in August, but is still up 3.1 percent from a year ago. The price for new warehouse construction rose 0.3 percent in August and 3.8 percent from a year ago. Association officials said the looming threat of substantial tax increases have likely dampened demand for new construction projects, forcing contractors to aggressively compete for the relatively few projects underway. “Washington’s failure to set tax rates for next year has put a lot of construction projects on hold, making it virtually impossible for contractors to keep pace with rising materials costs,” said Sandherr.
