Work Surges Ahead on Quakes Stadium By Lori Tobias CEG CORRESPONDENT

JCB CEO Retires After 25 Years of Service. ..8

Talbert Hires New Sales Manager...8

After delays that twice pushed back the opening date of the San Jose Earthquakes new major league soccer stadium, work is again on track and surging ahead. And people are taking notice. “The road right next to the stadium, Coleman Avenue, is a busy road,” said Quakes President Dave Kaval. “When you see this steel superstructure coming up out of the ground, you can’t help but stare. We’ve had some people bumping into other cars because they were busy staring at the cranes. I’m sure there are going to be more of those.” The Quakes have been looking for a site for its own stadium for years, Kaval said. It currently rents from the Santa Claire University where the

team plays at the Buck Shaw Stadium. “We worked with city of San Jose to find a location that really fit the transportation and environmental needs,” he said. “But there are a lot of restrictions in the Bay area in terms of what you can build and where you can build it.” Then, the team came upon the 74acre site of defense contractor FMC’s former manufacturing plant. Across the street from the Mineta San Jose International Airport in northern San Jose with easy access to Caltrain and multiple freeways, it seemed a great fit for the soccer team stadium, but it was not, as it turned out, without its challenges. Construction began in February of 2013 with the demolition of the defense manufacturing plant. The site had been used since the 1940s to build see STADIUM page 30

After delays that twice pushed back the opening date of the San Jose Earthquakes new major league soccer stadium, work is again on track and surging ahead.

Construction employment expanded in 211 metro areas, declined in 67 and was stagnant in 61 between November 2012 and November 2013, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released Dec. 31 by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials said the employment gains were encouraging, but cautioned that future gains were dependent on continued economic growth and new investments in aging domestic infrastructure. “Construction employment continued to expand in many parts of the country in November, but most areas have a long way to go before reaching prior peak levels,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “It will take many more months of strong economic growth and new investments in public infrastructure before many places experience construction employment levels close to their prior peaks.” Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, Ga. added the largest number of construction jobs in the past year (10,500 jobs, 12 percent), followed by Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale, Calif. (9,100 jobs, 8 percent), Santa AnaAnaheim-Irvine, Calif. (8,200 jobs, 11 percent) and Tampa-St. PetersburgClearwater, Fla. (6,400 jobs, 12 percent). The largest percentage gains see EMPLOYMENT page 60

“When you see this steel superstructure coming up out of the ground, you can’t help but stare. We’ve had some people bumping into other cars because they were busy staring at the cranes. I’m sure there are going to be more of those,” said Quakes President Dave Kaval.

State Needs $170M to Finish 520 Bridge SEATTLE (AP) A design error is leading the state to deplete its reserve funds for the new Highway 520 floating bridge, and state officials said Wednesday they will need an additional $170 million to complete the bridge replacement. Lawmakers had capped the project budget at $2.72 billion, but state transportation officials

are now asking the Legislature to raise that to $2.89 billion. Washington Transportation Secretary Lynn Peterson said the agency doesn't foresee the need for new funding sources to complete the work at hand. The state has estimated that a pontoon design mistake, which led to cracks in the pontoons, see BRIDGE page 60

Popular JCB CEO Bows Out After Almost 25 Years of Service Colleagues have bid a fond farewell to JCB Chief Executive Officer Alan Blake who is retiring from the company after almost a quarter of a century of service. Blake will remain as an advisor to JCB. Blake became JCB CEO on Jan. 1, 2010, making him only the fifth person to hold the position in JCB's history. Dozens of friends and colleagues gathered at the World HQ in Rocester to say goodbye at a special presentation. Chief Executive Officer Designate Graeme Macdonald will take over as CEO on Jan. 1. “Alan has contributed a huge amount to the growth and success of JCB over many years,” Macdonald said. “The expansion projects Alan led enabled JCB to double its production from 36,000 to 72,000 machines over a five year period. “In addition to his vast achievements at JCB, he will also be remembered for his humility and for making time to speak to everyone, no matter what their rank or position and that’s something we are all going to miss. “On behalf of the 11,000 JCB employees around the world, our dealers and customers, we wish him a very long and happy retirement.”

JCB CEO, Alan Blake (C, front) with his wife, Diane, at his retirement presentation.

“Coming to JCB was one of the best decisions of my life,” Blake said. “The breadth and width of what you can learn here is enormous, and the opportunity to achieve great things is endless. “I have been fortunate to have a great career here and one that has coincided with the global growth of the company. I have

met and worked with some truly brilliant people all around the world and I will never forget my time at JCB.” Blake joined JCB in 1989 from Somersetbased Westland Helicopters after a distinguished 19-year tenure at the company, which saw him rise through the ranks from apprentice to head of Helicopter

Transmissions. He joined JCB Transmissions in Wrexham in 1989 as operations director with responsibility for developing new transmissions for two of JCB’s two key products: the backhoe loader and Loadall telescopic handler. New Holland Backs Troops With Donation New Holland Agriculture and Construction announced a donation of $57,800 to the Fisher House Foundation. The funds were generated as part of the True Blue Salute program that ran from Sept. 11 to Nov. 11, 2013. “We’re proud to support the Fisher House Foundation and the great work that they do on behalf of our military families,” said Abe Hughes, vice president, New Holland North America. “The goal of the True Blue Salute program is to support Fisher House and recognize the courage, service and sacrifice so many people make every day to keep us safe and free.” Through the True Blue Salute program, New Holland offered a $911 “Thank You” coupon off selected models of New Holland Agriculture and Light Construction equipment to members of the Armed Forces, police officers and firefighters, as well as their families. In addition to the “Thank You” for military and first responders, New Holland donated $250 to the Fisher House Foundation for each qualifying model sold under this program. Since January 2012, New Holland has raised more than $1.2 million for

the Fisher House under similar True Blue Salute programs. “We’re very thankful to New Holland not only for this donation, but for the contributions they have made to the Fisher House Foundation,” said David Coker, president of Fisher House Foundation Inc. “The Fisher House Foundation provides a network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment and contributions from New Holland go a long way to helping us achieve our goals.” About Fisher House The Fisher House program is a private-public partnership that supports America’s military in their time of need. The program recognizes the special sacrifices of men and women in uniform and the hardships of military service by meeting a humanitarian need beyond that normally provided by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. Because members of the military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation donates “comfort homes,” built on the

grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times — during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease or injury. There is at least one Fisher House at every major military medical center to assist families in need and to ensure that they are provided with the comforts of home in a supportive environment. Annually, the Fisher House program serves more than 12,000 families, and have made available over three million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990. By law, there is no charge for any family to stay at a Fisher House operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs; and Fisher House Foundation uses donations to reimburse the individual Fisher Houses operated by the Army, Navy and Air Force. No family pays to stay at any Fisher House. For more information, visit www.fisherhouse.org/. Motorgrader design slowly standardized on machines built from the ground up, rather than being attachments for use on crawlers or wheeled tractors. “Self-propelled graders dominated the industry by 1940,” Berry said. The crawler loader appeared on the scene as a product of the 1930s, along with the asphalt paver, which replaced unpowered screeds and finishers. Road Show participants included the Highway Industries Association (HIA), whose members formed ARBA’s Manufacturers’ Division in 1927, and the Construction Industries Association (CIA), who were among the forerunners of the Construction Industries Manufacturers Association (CIMA) in Milwaukee, Wis., now the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM). Shows were held annually and then biennially throughout the 1920s and 1930s, although they were on the low-key side during the Depression years. Show sites during the 20s and 30s included Chicago, Cleveland, Atlantic City, St. Louis and Detroit. Motor scrapers became increasingly popular in the 1940s because of their greater speed, though pull scrapers continued to be widely used into the 1950s. One of the biggest breakthroughs of this decade was a quantum improvement in hydraulic systems. The pneumatic power drill was another major improvement. Rubber-tired loaders replaced crawlerdrawn wagons and rubber-tired bulldozers appeared on sites. The 1940 Road Show took place in Chicago, Ill. Then the nation, and the industry, went to war. The next show was eight years later, 1948, in Chicago. It was the most comprehensive up to that time, reflecting the postwar spirit of growth and vitality. As computers and other technology revolutionized equipment during the decades that followed, machines have become larger, more powerful and much more productive. The descendants of the horse-drawn units are today’s computer-aided 350-ton cranes, hydraulic excavators with 60-ft. (18 m) reaches, backhoes with 72-ft. (22 m) super-reach booms, powerful dozers and wheel loaders, satellite-aided graders, and the wide range of versatile equipment being displayed at ConExpo-Con/AGG. ConExpo More elaborate shows meant more planning time. The next show, in Chicago in 1957 — at the beginning of the Interstate Era — was the first to be produced exclusively by CIMA, now AEM. It was followed by shows in 1963, 1969, and 1975, also in Chicago. In 1963, the show became the Construction Equipment Exposition. It adopted the ConExpo name in 1969 and became known as the International Construction Equipment Exposition in 1975. The 1981 Show was held in Houston’s Astrodomain Complex. ConExpo ’87 and ConExpo ’93 were held in Las Vegas. The stage was set for the next big event, combining with the Con/AGG exposition in 1994 to produce the first ConExpo-Con/AGG in 1996.

Con/AGG The Manufacturer’s Division that had supported Road Shows exhibited for the first time at the annual convention of the National Sand and Gravel Association (NSGA) in Detroit, Mich., in 1928. Thus begins the story of Con/AGG. NAGA and its division, the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA), held biennial shows at that time. Their exposition was renamed the “Combined Biennial Show” in 1956. They were joined as a co-sponsor

in 1964 by the National Stone Association (NSA). (NSA and NSGA are now combined as the Natinal Stone, Sand and Gravel Association.) The show was then renamed “The Concrete and Aggregates Show” in 1970 and International Concrete and Aggregates Show in 1980. This is the event which combined with the ConExpo exposition. ConExpo-Con/AGG 2002 In 1994, the owners and producers of the two shows joined forces to establish ConExpo-Con/AGG. Their first show, in March 1996, in Las Vegas, drew more than 95,500 attendees and 1,280 exhibitors. The second, in 1999, grew to 124,000 attendees and 1,882 exhibitors. This triennial event has become the Western Hemisphere’s largest show for the construction, aggregates and ready mixed concrete industries. The co-owners and co-producers of ConExpoCon/AGG 2002 are AEM (formed on Jan. 1, 2002, by the consolidation of CIMA and the Equipment Manufacturers Institute), NRMCA, and NSSGA.

Early on, the Road Show attracted other construction associations, a phenomenon which has continued until the present, when ConExpo-Con/AGG has become an industry-wide meeting for the construction and construction materials industries. “It’s a huge event,” commented Brian Deery, senior director of the Highway Division of the Associated General Contractors of America [AGC], which is listed as one of the show co-sponsors. AGC is sponsoring the Information Technology Pavilion at the show, which will showcase software, contractor applications, support equipment, telecommunications and other equipment or services for technology-type and management service companies such as insurance and consulting. “The pavilion kind of parallels what we do on off-ConExpo years but it is part of ConExpo,” said AGC spokesperson Dennis Day. “This is the second time we are listed as a show co-sponsor but the first time that we are actually sponsoring part of the show with the pavilion.” AGC, ARTBA, and the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) are among the nine industry organizations that are holding their national conventions in Las Vegas during the show. Officials of the organizations say their members can attend special meetings, with their own speakers and social events, at their convention programs, but also benefit from the networking and wide range of information at the big show. AGC expects 3,500 people at its national convention. NUCA, co-locating its convention in conjunction with ConExpo-Con/AGG for the first time, expects about 800. Also co-locating for the first time will be the International Exposition for Fluid Power. “We’re hoping to receive additional exposure from being associated with the show,” said Bill Hilllman, NUCA’s executive vice president in Arlington, Va. “We’re hoping to have all kinds of people learn more about NUCA, and there’s also greater cost-efficiency for our members who can ‘kill two birds with one stone’ by attending both events. We also gave up our own equipment show because of ConExpo being there.” “Being associated with the largest construction and aggregate trade show is a benefit for our members, who can not only attend our educational sessions but also go to ConExpo to see the latest equipment and services,” said AGC’s Day. “Anytime you can get over 100,000 people together at a show, it’s a great benefit. I can’t imagine it not being a hugely successful show.” From the first Road Show in 1909 to the spectacular gathering in 2002, the industry displays its vigor as it moves onward and upward. $68 Billion Bullet Train in Limbo After Legal Setbacks SACRAMENTO (AP) — Officials overseeing California’s $68 billion high-speed rail project have taken pains in recent weeks to assure the public that construction plans are moving ahead, characterizing a series of recent setbacks as “a bump in the road.” That optimism comes despite recent court rulings against the project, creating confusion about the bullet train’s prospects. A Sacramento County judge rescinded the rail authority’s funding plan, forced it to show how it will pay for the first 300 miles of construction and rejected a request from the authority that would allow the state treasurer to sell $8.6 billion in bonds. But members of the California High-Speed Rail Authority board seemed undaunted during their December meeting. They praised staff for filling key positions at the agency and pointed to a nearly $1 billion construction contract signed in 2013 as evidence of progress. “They just paint a rosy picture, charge ahead, without acknowledging they have any serious issues to deal with or addressing how they’re going to deal with it,” said Michael Brady, one of the attorneys representing a group of Kings County residents who sued the state, leading to the judge’s rulings. Challenges also are mounting outside the courts. Republicans in Congress have vowed to block any further funding for the rail line and will hold a railroad subcommittee hearing in January to investigate the state’s spending of $3.3 billion in federal funds that are supposed to be matched by the state. Rail authority board Chairman

Officials overseeing California’s $68 billion high-speed rail project have taken pains in recent weeks to assure the public that construction plans are moving ahead, characterizing a series of recent setbacks as “a bump in the road.” Dan Richard has said California has an agreement with federal officials allowing it to spend the federal money first while the state bond money is in limbo. Richard said officials hope to have shovels in the ground in the Central Valley in January or February and projected that the federal money might last through “late spring.” “The state cannot sell bonds in the current legal environment,” said Tom Dresslar, a spokesman of state Treasurer Bill Lockyer, who sought the so-called validation lawsuit the state filed to seek blanket authority to sell the bonds, which the judge rejected. What happens next in the legal saga is up in the air, after Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Michael Kenny ruled that the rail plan no longer complies with the promises made to

state voters when they approved $10 billion in rail bonds in 2008. That ballot measure promised that the state would have all the funding in hand for the first useable segment of rail and have all the necessary environmental clearances before construction started. Kenny said it failed to do that. Rail officials appear poised to deliver a new funding plan to their own high-speed rail board for approval, while the plaintiffs who sued believe the plan needs to go before the state Legislature, which approved a 2012 funding bill that squeaked through the Senate with only one vote to spare. “I think there was a lot of assumptions by my colleagues when we voted that there was a pretty good chance of getting more federal funds and a pretty good chance of getting private funds,

neither of which has materialized,” said Sen. Mark DeSaulnier, DConcord, chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee, who voted against the 2012 legislation. DeSaulnier’s committee plans a hearing on the project in February. Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, remains a strong supporter of highspeed rail and has appointed top advisers to the board, including Richard. Democrats also control both houses of the state Legislature and many of them are supportive. If a new vote is needed, some might be wary of funneling money to a massive project that appears on the ropes, especially in an election year. “The climate has changed in the last year. You might see people in the Legislature saying, ‘We should cut our losses and just move on,’” said Brady, the attorney represent-

ing Kings County plaintiffs. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, a Bakersfield Republican who has sought to block federal funding for the project, said now is a good time for Brown to reflect on his highspeed rail dream and back out. He said it’s becoming clear that “it will not fulfill the promises made to voters.” There is still more legal wrangling, including the second phase of the lawsuit in which plaintiffs have asked the judge to block the state from all high-speed rail spending. They will argue that the state can no longer fulfill several of the promises made to voters at the time of the bond vote, including sending passengers between San Francisco and Los Angeles in 2 hours and 40 minutes and operating the trains without public subsidies. At the same time, supporters are eager to launch construction, which would make it harder to pull the plug. Richard said the worst result of the negative legal decisions has been the public perception that the project is stalled. “Nothing in those rulings changes our ability to move forward,” he said. “We’re ready to build this project.” Rod Diridon, a former board chairman who remains supportive and is now executive director of the Mineta Transportation Institute at San Jose State University, noted that the judge allowed the signed construction contracts to stand, showing that he did not intend to kill the project. Rare Basements Give Workers Trouble STADIUM from page 1

amphibious assault tanks. In the 1950s during the Cold War, the firm started building underground basements for storage of the equipment in case they were bombed. The need for the basements was very short lived, said Kaval. But the contractor kept the basements and used for them storage. That’s where stadium builders ran into trouble. “Because of the water table, it’s very rare to have basements in California,” Kaval said. “When we dug down, there was a very high water table. We dug out all these vaults and they filled with water. We had to work with soils engineers to fill in the space without impacting the foundation of the new stadium. Sometimes these basements were like two stories deep. You’d start digging down with excavators and you’d keep going. Whenever they hit one they’d be like ‘Oh it’s an iceberg,’ because they had no idea how long it was going to go on.” The crews can laugh about it now, said Kaval. “But at the time it was concerning.” Frustrating as it was, the perseverance paid off. In November, contractors raised the first beams on the team offices and locker rooms, and one month later, passers-by watched as cranes began lifting the

eight- to nine-story steel superstructure into place. The stadium structure itself also poses some challenges in its shape and scope. “The steel superstructure is kind of complex and demanding shape because it is holding up the roof,” Kaval said. “It’s a very unique style because of the way the roof has to be supported. It has to be suspended and there can be no poles to block the views. It creates an interesting architectural look that is also functional because it holds up the can-

tilevered roof.” The 18,000-seat stadium is set to be completed in late 2014, with the season opening game to be played there in 2015. The new stadium comes with a $60 million construction budget, all of it privately financed. It will feature 576 Club seats at field level and 12 Field Suites. “At the current stadium, people like how close they are to the field,” Kaval said. “These are kind of like NBA floor seats. It’s a unique arrangement.” The open air horseshoe-

shaped stadium with a natural grass playing surface will offer views of the Fremont Hills and beneath the scoreboard, the largest exterior bar — 115 ft. (35 m) long — in the U.S. The European-design roof will cover all the stands, retaining sound and building atmosphere. The plans also call for the primarily steel stadium to meet the criteria to earn LEEDS Silver Certification. Ninety-percent of the steel is recycled. “The environmental impact of our building has been key,” Kaval said. “It’s critical to the ownership, the philosophy of club and as a member of the community. We don’t know of any other stadium Silver LEEDS certified. We’re very proud of that.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) Caterpillar CW34 Handles All Phases of Compaction Caterpillar’s CW34 pneumatic roller is an eight wheel roller with an operating range from 11 to 30 ton (10 to 27 t).

Caterpillar Inc.’s CW34 pneumatic roller is an eight wheel roller with an operating range from 11 to 30 ton (10 to 27 t). This machine performs well on granular materials as well as all types of asphalt mix designs and can be used on all phases of compaction due to its high contact pressures. Typical applications include highways, city streets, county roads, lane additions, industrial sites, overlays, airport runways and other production-sized jobs. The CW34 delivers compaction with flexible ballast, oscillating front and rear wheels, front suspension and optional air on the run. Rear ballast options include modular and non-modular steel, sand and water. The modular steel ballast system can be added or removed, making it easy to adjust operating weights and match job site requirements. The oscillating front wheels deliver vertical

and horizontal forces that reduce air voids, ensuring uniformity across the surface, while the air on the run option allows the operator to quickly adjust wheel pressures in order to increase or decrease static loads for optimal surface quality. This machine offers visibility due to the new console design and standard sliding station that rotates 90 degrees to either side. The operator can easily view wheel edges as well as a one by one meter in front of the machine. An LCD display and push button machine controls simplify operation for an all-around comfortable operating environment. The optional Cat compaction control system provides an easy to use interface that keeps the operator informed of mat temperatures and rolling patterns. Infrared temperature sensors combined with mapping keeps

the operator informed of current mat temperatures, machine position, and where coverage has taken place. This intuitive system greatly enhances nighttime performance, while also recording information for future data analysis and quality control documentation. The CW34 powertrain functions much like an automotive-type system with continuously variable engine speed adjustment at the propel lever. An automatic speed control feature enables the operator to tune the system for a maximum speed within each of the three ranges including low, intermediate, and high. When operating in intermediate and high, the system shifts smoothly through the speed ranges and offers a maximum speed of 12 mph (19 kmh) for quick movement around and between job sites. The system also has the ability to coast, leading to less

fuel consumption and lower sound levels for an all-around more comfortable environment. The CW34 utilizes the Cat C4.4 engine with ACERT technology and can be outfitted for highly regulated or lesser regulated countries. These machines are fully capable of operating at temperatures up to 120F (49C) with maximum engine load, due to the high volume cooling system and large fan. The smooth operating Cat powertrain comes standard with ECO-mode, and automatic speed control, saving fuel and lowering operating costs. Eight 13/80 R20 rubber tires provide an overall compaction width of 82 in. (208 cm) with 1.5 in. (3.8 cm) overlap. Each wheel is equipped with selfadjusting scrapers in order to prevent asphalt from adhering to the wheel surface. Optional cocoa mats can be utilized for better water retention, ensuring the wheels stay wet. Reliable water spray systems are a must in order to keep up with production and maintain pace with the paver. The pressurized Cat system is designed with dedicated spray nozzles for each wheel. The system includes a single water pump, triple filtration, and adjustable intermittent operation. Triple filtration with filters located at the fill point, water pump and spray nozzles offer protection against clogs. The adjustable intermittent mode conserves water and minimizes re-fills for optimal efficiency. An optional emulsion spray system with dedicated tank, lines, and spray bars enables releasing agents to be utilized on the wheels for additional protection against adhesion. Working in unfavorable conditions is a regular occurrance in the paving business, however, when equipped with the Cab, comfort is optimized. Full floor to ceiling glass enables good sight lines to the wheel edges and both sides of the machine. An optional sun-canopy can be added to the ROPS for increased protection in adverse conditions. The GRW 280i series of pneumatic compactors from Hamm incorporates Tier IVinterim emissions technology in a variety of weights for every application. The new GRW 280i pneumatic or rubbertired roller was introduced at Bauma 2013. The GRW 280i updates the pneumatic roller with subtle design changes and new engines complying with EPA Tier IVi emissions controls. While each model can be acquired in its own weight, the revised ballast compartment allows users to vary the operating weight even more easily and flexibly than before, according to the manufacturer. New technical details include prefitting for its high-speed tire inflation system A standard oil service valve for lossless oil change ensures improved environmental protection. In the operator’s workplace, instead of the previous setup with two seats, the new GRW offers one comfortable, adjustable seat and thus maximum freedom of movement. Hamm’s GRW 280i rubber wheeled roller platform offers enhanced compacting quality, plenty of driving comfort, good visibility conditions, and the highest of safety standards, according to the manufacturer. Viewing channels in the frame structure offer a view of the edges and the tires of the

outer wheels and a novel suspension of the front wheels allows for an uninterrupted view towards the front. The new GRW 280i’s operator’s platform rests in a versatile position, on a newly designed, asymmetrical frame. Innovations with respect to ballasting, drive concept and operating philosophy are not visible from the exterior, but their effects are evident as they make compacting better and more convenient. A single driver’s seat — which optionally can be moved and pivoted at the side towards the machine’s outer edges and along with the console — has replaced two seats, two steering wheels and two control consoles in older models, which could restrict freedom of movement. Operation and display elements are positioned on the console, and thus always are in the driver’s field of vision. Also, the speed is no longer controlled by an accelerator pedal in the foot space; in the GRW series it’s controlled by joysticks, which signifies a considerable boost in convenience for the driver. In total, this operating concept corresponds to that of a tandem roller. Thus, cost-effectiveness is increased because in the future, operators can switch flexibly between roller types without any adaptation time. see HAMM page 42

Hydrostatic Rear-Axle Drive Allows for Higher Speeds HAMM from page 38

Higher Speeds for Transport, Compaction A hydrostatic rear-axle drive for the GRW 280i allows for higher speeds during transport and compaction. To match it, the newly conceived steered axle at the front with disk brakes ensures the necessary braking force and thus considerable safety when braking suddenly, even with maximum load. In total, sensitive control of the rear axle and an extraordinarily good view of the site and the wheels’ edges enable high compaction quality. The operator’s platform — with enveloping ROPS — is located in front of the center of the machine, while the Deutz 114-hp, Tier IVi-compliant engine is situated in the rear of the machine. This ensures a view of all relevant points. The view of the area directly in front of the front axle also is unobstructed. There, hydraulic cylinders for level compensation of the front suspension used to protrude out of the frame into the driver’s field of vision. They have been replaced with two swing arms between the front pairs of wheels, which require very little space and are not visible to the driver.

The generously dimensioned brake system ensures the higher-than-average safety standard during driving. When the machine is idle, the access steps to the cab afford additional safety. The track offset between the front and rear wheelsets is one of the basic features of pneumatic rollers. Hamm utilized this fact in the design of the new GRW and designed the machine frame in symmetry with the wheelsets. This intelligent design offers one crucial advantage because, for the first time ever, the driver can see the wheels on all outer sides. Moreover, viewing channels in the frame structure offer a view of the tires of the outer wheels. These viewing channels are illuminated to ease work at night. Flexible Weight Loading The new GRW 280i rubber wheeled roller is being launched in the market with various

basic weight ratings. The machines can accommodate different amounts of ballast depending on the basic weight. The outer dimensions are identical for all variants. Rubber-tired rollers need to be able to have their weight modified swiftly and easily. To this end the GRW 280i offers large ballast spaces between the wheelsets, and a serrated frame that is open in the downward direction. It can be filled with steel or concrete using a forklift truck. And regardless of how much ballast a GRW 280i carries, due to the intelligent ballasting system, the distribution of weight to the front and rear axles always remains constant. The generously dimensioned brake sys-

tem ensures the higher-than-average safety standard during driving. When the machine is idle, the access steps to the cab afford additional safety. They are integrated in the outer contour and can be folded out. Thus, they offer convenient and safe access to the maintenance platform next to the engine. In this position, they lie on the outer contour, but constitute a visual interference contour. As a result, after completing maintenance work, the operator is reminded to swivel the access steps back into position. At the same time, the maintenance accesses, which would otherwise have to be carried along separately, are eliminated. Hamm also has made provisions for efficient maintenance, as all maintenance points are on the engine’s right-hand side. No matter how much the version of the GRW 280i weighs, its machine height is always under 10 ft. (3 m). This not only simplifies transport on a low-bed trailer, but also working under bridges, protrusions or other overhangs. For more information, visit www.wirtgenamerica.com. WHILE SOME PEOPLE ARE HAVING A PROBLEM GRASPING THE CONCEPT, THEY’RE SURE NOT HAVING ANY DIFFICULTY GRABBING THE RESULTS. It’s a rubber tire roller that vibrates with enough centrifugal force to equal the output of a 55,000 pound pneumatic. The GW750 handles the toughest HMA mixes with ease, getting balanced high densities from the top through the bottom of the mat. Great on SMA, too! And it provides a sound interlock between new overlays and profiled surfaces. It’s bonus time!

Essex Rental Corp. to Offer Portion of Bridge Must Be Crane Inventory in Sealed Bid Auction Replaced Due to Earthquakes, Wind

Essex Rental Corp. will be offering a portion of its surplus crawler crane inventory in a sealed bid auction. Ron Schad, president and CEO of Essex said, “Essex Rental Corp. is continually evaluating the rental assets we own to ensure that they meet the needs of our customers and provide the highest possible return for our shareholders. In an effort to accelerate the sale of currently underutilized cranes, we have engaged Hunyady Auction Company to manage the sale of certain of our crawler cranes in a sealed bid auction. The assets being offered represent approximately 6 percent of our crawler crane fleet. More than 80 percent of the crawler cranes that will be listed for sale are traditional cranes whose utilization and return on capital have been unsatisfactory. Unlike a live auction where equipment is sold to the highest bidder, in a sealed bid auction potential buyers propose a price they are willing to pay for a particular crane and we have the ability to determine whether the offered price is acceptable. As with prior sales, we will use the proceeds from the sale

In addition, the company provides product support including installation, maintenance, repair, and parts and services for equipment provided and other equipment used by its construction industry customers. With a large fleet, consisting primarily of cranes, as well as other construction equipment and unparalleled customer service and support, Essex supplies a wide variety of lifting solutions for construction projects related to power generation, petrochemical, refineries, water treatment and purification, bridges, highways, hospitals, shipbuilding, offshore oil fabrication and industrial plants, and commercial and residential construction. BRIDGE from page 1

has cost about $200 million. “The original pontoon design included an unfortunate and costly mistake,” Peterson said in a statement. Most of the extra $170 million can come from bonds funded by Highway 520 tolls, Washington Transportation Secretary Lynn Peterson said. The agency would also tap into other funds, leaving less money for other projects. The project covers improvements on the eastside 520 corridor, a new floating bridge and pontoon construction. Some other proposed enhancements to the corridor, such as improvements on the western side of the bridge, remain unfunded. State officials are looking to open the new span to traffic in late 2015 or early 2016. The new bridge will replace an existing 520 span that connects Seattle to Bellevue. Officials say the existing bridge must be replaced because it is vulnerable to earthquakes and wind. Rising costs on the 520 project comes at a time that lawmakers are considering a massive new transportation package that would increase the state gas tax. Association officials said that the fact Congress was able to reach a budget deal late in 2013 was a sign that elected officials can work together to protect economic growth. The challenge now is finding a way to finance needed investments in aging roads, bridges, clean water systems and other infrastructure systems, they added. “Congress and the administration need to continue working together to find a way to boost economic growth and rebuild our aging infrastructure,” Sandherr said. “Only by working together will Washington officials be able to help our economy grow and construction employment expand in 2014.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)
