Rock Fall Closes Portion of I-70 in Colorado By Brenda Ruggiero CEG CORRESPONDENT

Diesel Technicians Program Under Way in Utah...8

IronPlanet Hosts Cat Auction Services Florida Sale…47

A large rock fall incident on Interstate 70 in Northwestern Colorado on Feb. 15 is still in the process of being remedied. The rock fall occurred in Glenwood Canyon, which is in Garfield County, around 2:30 a.m. Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) crews flagged traffic throughout the day as they worked to clear boulders. A second slide incident in the same location occurred at 9:03 p.m. that night. About an hour later, CDOT fully closed I-70 through the canyon for safety. Initially, CDOT’s geohazards team was on the site and also evaluated the location by helicopter. They determined that there was damage to the roadway, retaining wall, bridge and guardrail. A semi-truck was caught in the second slide and disabled, but no injuries were reported. see CDOT page 24 Tracy Trulove/Colorado Department of Transportation photo

Nev. Needs More Time on Mine Seattle Tunnel Partners Superfund Status Resumes SR 99 Mining By Scott Sonner ASSOCIATED PRESS

RENO, Nev. (AP) Facing a deadline set by federal regulators, Gov. Brian Sandoval said the state needs more time to decide whether to end its long-held opposition to having an abandoned Nevada mine listed among the nation’s most contaminated sites. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials notified Sandoval last month that if they didn’t hear from him by Jan. 29, they’d formally propose placing Yerington’s former Anaconda copper mine on the Superfund’s National Priority List as soon as March. The World War-II era mine is already a federal Superfund site, a designation that brought federal help see SUPERFUND page 18

Seattle Tunnel Partners has received conditional permission to resume tunneling operations on the SR 99 Tunnel Project. STP resumed mining after WSDOT conditionally lifted the “suspension for cause” that halted mining and barging-related activities in January following two safety incidents. As part of the conditions for lifting the suspension for cause, STP will be permitted to tunnel forward and install approximately 25 concrete tunnel rings. During this time, they must demonstrate that they have implemented a number of changes to ensure they can safely continue mining. These changes include:

• Updated tunnel work and quality plans, including calculations of the amount of soil removed during excavation of each tunnel ring. • Realignment of key personnel within their quality assurance program. • New quality assurance protocols. • New personnel at key positions within the tunneling operation. • Restructured daily tunneling meetings that include additional participants and protocols. WSDOT made the decision to conditionally lift the suspension for cause after its team of tunneling experts evalusee TUNNEL page 22

Fifty years ago the world’s first articulated hauler was completed by Volvo engineers in Sweden. “Gravel Charlie” quickly became a construction industry icon and operators’ favorite, with more than 70,000 articulated haulers produced to date. To celebrate this special year of the articulated hauler, Volvo Construction Equipment employees in Shippensburg, Pa., custom-painted a metallic gold A40G that will travel across the United States and Canada in 2016. The “Golden Hauler” will end its journey at ConExpo 2017. It will be auctioned with proceeds going to SkillsUSA and SkillsCanada to support training programs that encourage new generations to enter the construction industry.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Construction Surge...

Phoenix Plans to Hire More Staff in Permit Office PHOENIX (AP) Phoenix has a plan to hire more city workers as officials say increased construction activity is making it difficult to keep up with project permitting and review. A City Council subcommittee has approved the planning department’s plan to add 19 new positions, and the staffing boost now goes to the full City Council. Councilwoman Kate Gallego says the need for additional staffing reflects the improved economy and she says the approval of the additional positions signals that Phoenix “is open and ready for business.” Phoenix’s planning department had reduced its staff during the great recession as development and construction activity slowed. Officials say the new positions will be focused on providing guidance to builders and information to residents while shortening timelines. Diesel Technician Pathways Program ‘Revs Up’ in Utah Gov. Gary R. Herbert, along with Utah Diesel Technician industry partners and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), announced the Utah Diesel Technician Pathways program, which is designed to provide Utah students a direct pathway from high school and college to the workforce. Herbert announced the program during a press conference at the Cummins Rocky Mountain facility in Salt Lake City. An initiative similar to the Utah Aerospace Pathways (UAP) program, the diesel technician industry is creating a pathway that will open opportunities for young men and women who are interested in the diesel technician field. “Productive education partnerships, such as the Utah Diesel Technician Pathways program, are important investments in the state’s future,” Herbert said. “We are fortunate to have unique partnerships with industry and education leaders to better align workforce education with economic opportunities in Utah.” The program begins in high see UTAH page 10

Upon graduation, students will complete an internship with one of the diesel technician industry partners and then at least one year of training at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). This program has brought diesel technician industry representatives, education leaders and government together in collaboration. The six diesel technician industry partners in Utah participating in this program are Cummins Rocky Mountain, Jackson Group Peterbilt, Kenworth Sales Company, Komatsu Equipment Corporation, Mountain West Truck Center Volvo Mack and Wheeler CAT. The collaboration started in Oct. 2015 with the goal of having the pilot program beginning in the 2016 school year. Canyons and Jordan School Districts, who already offer diesel technician coursework, are working with the industry partners to fully align the

Steps for Choosing Concrete Dowel Drill for Projects By Randy Stevens

drilling projects. Equipment-mounted drills also work on the slab, but are attached to a backhoe or excavator that repositions them quickly. They are available with three to five drills, and can rotate 360-degrees to quickly drill on opposite sides of a slab without moving the carrier machine. Equipment-mounted drills also feature adjustable spacing and smooth, precise shifting capabilities that allow users to drill a second set of holes without repositioning.

SPECIAL TO CEG

Concrete drilling projects can cover one mile to a hundred, and a few holes to thousands. But before choosing a drill based on the clear facts, you’ll need to hammer into the details, which could reveal that bigger isn’t always better, less could be more and working smarter not harder goes a long way. From handheld to on-grade and slab rider to equipment-mounted, there are several different types of concrete drills with various features and capabilities that can affect everything from efficiency to accuracy and ease of use to safety. The Spec Selection The simplest drills are handheld electric hammer or pneumatic rock drills. They get the job done, but come with three significant drawbacks. First, they can lead to

Equipment-mounted drills can be mounted to a backhoe or excavator to quickly move from one patch the next.

Slab rider drills reference from the top of the slab, which is more level than the subgrade. As a result they are more accurate.

injuries of the hands and arms since operators absorb the machines’ vibrations. In addition, lifting and repositioning the drills at the next spot can lead to back injuries. Second, they are slow.

Operators can only drill one hole at a time and to top it off they can have a hard time maintaining consistent pressure that’s needed fast, effective drilling. And third, handheld drills are inaccurate. There is

simply no way an operator can drill holes perfectly straight by hand. Faster, safer and oftentimes specified options are doweldrilling machines that don’t require operators to hold them. One type of dowel drilling machine is an ongrade drill that sits on the subgrade and drills into the slab. They are available in mobile as well as stationary models. Stationary drills typically are small but lightweight, so operators can easily reposition them. And even though they don’t come equipped with wheels, most manufacturers can add wheels to make them mobile. Mobile units, while typically bigger, are even easier to reposition because they are equipped with wheels that roll

along the subgrade. Drills that work from the slab rather than the subgrade are called slab riders. They operate without disturbing the subgrade and are equipped with up to five drills for even greater efficiency on some large projects. They are bigger than on-grade models, but are equipped with wheels and auto alignment features for fast and easy repositioning. Some are even self-propelled for quick maneuvering to the next drilling spot while an optional towbar attachment pulls the air compressor. For added versatility, some slab riders even can be converted to drill on-grade, which gives contractors the versatility to work on a variety of

Scratching the Surface Understanding the types of drills is a good place to start when selecting one for a project, but you also must consider jobsite limitations. If there are only a few inches of slab exposed, an on-grade drill is your only option. And if there isn’t much area to work on the subgrade, like in smaller patches, you might need a more compact model with fewer gangs. Single gang, on-grade drills are lightweight and load easily into a truck, which makes them a great choice for projects where you will need to move frequently. However, they might not be an efficient option for large projects that cover greater distances. That’s when it’s time to take a look at larger models. Slab rider drills are considerably heavier, so they must be loaded onto a truck or trailer to be towed to the job site, and unloaded with a forklift or other piece of machinery. While the logistics might be more challenging compared to ongrade drills, slab riders can deliver greater efficiency on large, longdistance projects like lane additions. Also, because they are mounted on wheels, self-propelled and don’t need to operate from the see DRILL page 12

subgrade, they can quickly and easily move from one patch to the next. This also makes slab riders ideal for full-depth repair jobs where patches are located in close proximity to one another. And finally, slab rider drills reference from the top of the slab, which is more level than the subgrade. As a result they are more accurate. On larger full-depth repair projects that consist of multiple intermittent patches that span several hundred feet, an equipmentmounted drill might be the most efficient. Rather than loading an on-grade or slab rider drill and driving it to each new patch, the operator simply lifts the drill with the backhoe or excavator and drives to the next patch. While basic jobsite conditions will help narrow down your decision, the number of gangs also is a factor. Doing the Numbers Single-gang drills are typically ideal for jobs that require several hundred to a few thousand holes, while two-gang drills are better suited for 5,000 to 10,000 holes. And as the number of holes increases, so can the number of drills on a machine. But choosing the right number of drill systems can go beyond the size of the project. For example, concrete slabs need time to set before they can be drilled, and in some cases several pours are required. Some of these projects might include a lot of holes, but a smaller drill with fewer gangs could be more cost effective because operators are limited

in terms of how many holes they can drill at a given time. On the other hand, if you only can drill during certain hours of the day or night, which is common on busy interstate projects where minimal traffic interruption is allowed, a high production rate is a must, even if the total number of holes isn’t high. So while a single-gang would get the job done, a multi-gang will drill more holes in the shorter time period. Keep in mind that if you increase the number of drill systems, you’ll also need more air to power them. Each gang operates independently and typically requires about 100 cfm from an air compressor, so if you’re operating a five-gang drill, at minimum you’re going to need a 500 cfm air compressor. Get Below the Surface Whether it’s on-grade, slab rider or equipment-mounted, matching the right drill with the project takes more than knowing the surface details. To be sure you’re making the best impact on your efficiency, accuracy and productivity, drill into the details. Randy Stevens is the vice president of sales at E-Z Drill. He has been with the company for more than 20 years. Stevens has served on various committees of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) and is a member of the American Concrete Pavement Association. New Noise Standard...

Aspen Passes Measure That Requires Contractors to Limit Construction Noise ASPEN, Colo. (AP) The Aspen City Council has approved a new law that will require construction contractors to keep the noise down in the summertime as part of an effort to get people to spend more time outdoors in warmer months. The measure could require builders to put up sound-blocking walls. Trish Aragon, Aspen’s city engineer, said the city has been working on the new noise standard for about a year. She said some contractors have already been following the tighter standards. Temporary sound-blocking walls were used in Aspen near the Pitkin County Courthouse as a part of the recent Galena Plaza work and at several residential construction projects, the

Last summer, contractors were required to file plans to reduce landfill waste and minimize traffic and parking. Aspen Daily News reported. Noise from construction sites is measured at the property line. The new rules are part of the city’s regular updates to construction management rules. Last summer, contractors were required to file plans to reduce landfill waste and minimize traffic and parking. They were also ordered to limit detours on streets and sidewalks. To enforce the rules, two additional

seasonal construction mitigation officers have been hired. As a result, the number of violations issued to contractors went up 18 percent, and citizen complaints dropped 80 percent. with containing the pollution and pinpointing its source. Adding the site to the priority list would make it eligible for federal money to pay for 90 percent of the tens of millions of dollars needed to start cleanup. But critics fear the listing would give Yerington and surrounding ranches a black eye. In a letter to the EPA, Sandoval said he is not yet convinced such a listing is in the state’s best interest given continued opposition from local residents. They fear an adverse impact on property values and uncertainty over future availability of EPA funds. “We continue to view NPL listing as an option of last resort,” the governor wrote. “I am assured by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection that there are no imminent health concerns at the site that require immediate action.” Sandoval said there’s no reason any rule-making can’t wait until September. He said he’ll provide his formal position on the matter at the end of April, while the state continues to examine its options. The mine covers 6 sq. mi. (9.64 sq km) of land owned partly by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Atlantic Richfield acquired the property in 1977 from Anaconda Copper, which built the mine in 1941. Fueled by demand after WWII, Anaconda produced 1.7 billion lbs. (771 million kg) of copper from 1952 to 1978 at the mine in the Mason Valley, an irrigated agricultural oasis in the area’s otherwise largely barren high desert. The site’s most recent owner, Arimetco, abandoned it in 2000. In 2013, the mine’s rural neighbors won a $19.5 million settlement from companies they accused of covering up the contamination of drinking water wells. EPA tests showed

rural wells were tainted by uranium and other toxic chemicals that leaked from the mine for decades. EPA regional administrator Jared Blumenfeld last month told Sandoval he needed to know by Jan. 29 whether the state has an alternative cleanup proposal. He said the agency is running out of time to get funding proposals in the pipeline and head off concern about the risk of hazardous chemicals escaping from the aging site in the next few years. Blumenfeld said the most immediate threat is the estimated 90 million gallons of acidic solution that Arimetco left in the heap leach and fluid management system. “The reason for urgency is that funding needs to be in place well before the current pond capacity is exceeded,” Blumenfeld wrote in a Dec. 22 letter. He said the situation demands constant management to avoid further leakage from the storage ponds, or an overflow. “The consequence of either could result in significant additional threat to the Mason Valley Groundwater Basin,” he said. Construction on a remedy needs to start by summer 2019, he added The state projected last year it would cost $30.4 million to address the most pressing concerns at the mine. Sandoval acknowledged the need for a permanent closure of the Arimetco heaps. “But not the dire nature of the situation and urgency conveyed in your letter,” he wrote to the EPA. “I have been advised that there is no critical reason to propose listing of the site in March, as you recommend, versus September 2016.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

Tunneling Resumes — With Conditions TUNNEL from page 1

ated documentation submitted by STP over the past several weeks. While mining can resume, barging activities are still restricted pending submittal of additional documentation. STP will remove excavated soil by truck as they continue addressing the barging issue. Repairs to the pier that was damaged during the Jan. 12 barging incident were completed. Work was suspended for cause on Jan. 14 per section 14.2 of the contract, which says the state can suspend work without liability to WSDOT under a number of conditions, including the contractor’s failure to “correct conditions unsafe for the project personnel or general public.” The suspension for cause only addressed tunneling operations involving the tunneling machine and the loading of barges at the site. It did not apply to the other ongoing work under the design-build contract with STP or any other contracts being managed by the viaduct program. After the suspension for cause was put in place, WSDOT notified STP that they would need to confirm the following things before mining could resume: • The tunneling machine is operating as intended and meets the designbuild contract’s technical requirements. • All necessary training for staff on the tunneling machine is complete. • The tunneling work plan is updated to address the over-excavation that led to the sinkhole. • Processes are in place to ensure STP’s tunneling work plan is followed. • STP updates its quality program to ensure key quality program managers are involved in all tunneling activities.

WSDOT photo

As part of the conditions for lifting the suspension for cause, STP will be permitted to tunnel forward and install approximately 25 concrete tunnel rings.

Next Steps The tunneling machine is currently located west of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, near South Washington Street. The conditional lift will remain in place for approximately 160 ft. (49 m) of tunneling. During this period — which is considered part of STP’s initial testing phase — STP will be operating with additional communication with WSDOT and its tunneling experts. If STP demonstrates that its revised mining procedures are effective, crews will continue mining an additional 100 ft. (30.4 m) north to a planned maintenance stop. Once there, crews could spend several weeks performing final maintenance before the machine tunnels beneath the Alaskan Way Viaduct. WSDOT will fully close SR 99 through downtown for approximately two weeks while the machine passes beneath the viaduct. The closure date will depend

Seattle Tunnel Partners has received conditional permission to resume tunneling operations on the SR 99 Tunnel Project

on the tunneling machine’s progress. Statement From Gov. Jay Inslee “WSDOT, in consultation with its team of tunnel experts, lifted the suspension of tunneling for cause and said that conditional tunneling should resume for 25 more tunnel rings. I concur with their decision, and WSDOT has notified the contractor,” said Inslee. “The contractor has a plan for modifying tunnel operations to ensure positive ground control. It has also made changes to key personnel, and it has put in place protocols for quality control and assurance. The contractor now has an opportunity to show progress during this test period, prior to tunneling under the viaduct and underneath Seattle,” he said. Statement From Acting Transportation Secretary Roger Millar “Seattle Tunnel Partners has addressed the issues that led to the suspension for cause. This conditional lift of the suspension for cause will give STP an opportunity to demonstrate the effectiveness of their updated mining procedures,” said Millar. “Above all else, this project has always been about safety. We must continue our work to replace the viaduct, but we have an obligation to ensure that work proceeds safely. We will continue to work with STP while taking whatever steps are necessary to protect the interests of the public moving forward,” he said. For more information, visit http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/. Safety a Priority as CDOT Works to Stabilize Slope CDOT from page 1

The Colorado State Patrol helped to clear out any semis and passenger vehicles that were stuck in the canyon. According to CDOT, the average daily traffic for Glenwood Canyon is around 300 vehicles per hour. Around the evening of the incident, the average traffic was about 150 per hour; the volume starts to drop off significantly after 11p.m. to less than 100 vehicles per hour. An alternate route for westbound motorists was established that added 146 mi. (235 km) and about three hours to a regular trip from Wolcott to Rifle on I-70, which is 67 mi. (107.8 km) or about 45 minutes. CDOT crews and contracted rock fall workers began rock scaling at the location in an attempt to bring down any additional debris. As a safety precaution, crews also installed rock fall mitigation fence on the westbound lanes. Rock scaling operations brought significantly more debris down from the slope than originally anticipated. Rock fall crews worked to stabilize the slope in addition to the mitigation fencing. Crews also worked to remove the damaged wall and guardrail in the westbound lanes. “Safety is our number one priority,” Amy Ford, CDOT communications director, said. “There is a lot of work yet to be done.” Weather created a challenge on some days. “We could not fly a helicopter to bring airbags and tools to the rock face,” said T. J. Blake, CDOT deputy maintenance superintendent on one particular day. “Crews had to haul everything up by hand and that set us back several hours.” In addition to the challenges the weather caused for the mitigation progress, it also created further movement in the rock fall area that crews had to address. In addition to installing 160 lft. (49 lm) of new fencing on top of the barrier, crews worked to bring down more rocks from the mountainside with pry bars, airbags, and some explosives. Initial repairs were made to the roadway, bridge, and guardrail as necessary, while working towards designing a follow-up mitigation project and providing project cost estimates. It is estimated that the

damage caused by this rockslide event could range from $2 million to $5 million. About 30 cu. yds. (23 cu m) of material came down during the initial natural slides on Feb. 15, with an additional 160 cu. yds. (122 cu m) — about 16 loads of rock in a tandem dump truck) — brought down by crews in the days since then. The largest rock that came down during the natural slides was the size of an SUV. Once the interstate was deemed safe for travel, a pilot car configuration was set up to direct singlelane, alternating traffic along a 6mi. (9.6 km) section, with traffic being staged on the east side of Hanging Lake Tunnel and the crossover at the Grizzly Creek rest area further west. The Grizzly Creek, Hanging Lake and Shoshone rest areas were closed during the duration of the pilot car operation. Bair Ranch (on the east side) and No Name (west side) rest areas remained open. “Certainly this is the longest closure that we’ve had for a scaling effort in my experience working on the Western Slope in the last 20

years,” said David Eller, regional transportation director. “The challenge here is that you can only put so many people in the slide zone at a time and proceed safely.” Eller also noted that crews don’t typically scale rocks of this size. “For example, in the last couple of days we have dislodged four boulders weighing between five and six tons each,” he said. On Feb. 25, a new configuration was announced in a media conference call. “We have some good news,” said Ford. “We are excited to announce that we are going to be able to open the corridor in our head-to-head operation by this afternoon, and I’ll give you a sense of what that is and what it isn’t. As we told you, we thought we’d be in the pilot car situation for several days — we have certainly been there now most of this week, and we have been working very, very hard. We’ve continued to do some of the rock fall mitigation on the road as we come in and continue to protect this environment — we are in the process of placing fences on the westbound lane, and we will be

“So because of that, from a safety environment perspective, we are going to continue to run the headto-head traffic behind a pace car — not a pilot car — going eastbound, and there will be a pace car going westbound,” she said. “So what cars will do as they come into this environment, is they will still stop at a controlled space as you’re coming into that 6-mile corridor — that’s where we’ve had the stops before. A pace car will take them down the road and then release them on the other side, and they’ll turn around and bring back the next side. There will be two cars going in this configuration in a 24-hour operation, which means that we will not be having the long term closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the middle of the day the way we have been for this last week.” Ford noted that there would still be delays and intermittent closures due to the additional work occurring in the area. “For instance, if we’re flying in our helicopter and we need to land for getting equipment and that kind of thing on the mountain, we will be holding the traffic,” she said. “When Tracy Trulove/Colorado Department of Transportation photo we do all of that, with that addiBart Necessary, CDOT resident tional work, we will do a lot of engineer, inspects the westbound advance notification on our deck for damage. signage and the like to let people know how long that closure continuing to do that here through will be, but it will not be a 9 to 4 the next few weeks. “Our helicopter has been flying closure — a shorter term closure. in and out as we have been getting What we do hope though is started on the permanent rock fall because we will be able to run the mitigation and that is going to be a head-to-head traffic in the 24-hour long term ongoing process, and period now that we won’t have the more specifically, on the eastbound long queues that have been haplane, we had several holes on our pening as a result of people waiting shoulders where they had been for us to open up the pilot car situpushed through by the rocks, and ation. So we’re very excited to what we have been able to do is to have gotten to this point.” Tracy Trulove of CDOT noted plate those and verify that they are that four pace cars would be worksafe. We have gone in and moved barriers and the like, and what we ing, including two Colorado State have been able to do now is starting patrol troopers and two from a trafthis afternoon, by about 4 [p.m.] or fic control company. Ford noted that it will be about a so, we will be opening the corridor month or so before they are able to in a head to head configuration.” Ford noted that they would be in open two lanes in each direction — a restricted environment as far as back to the original configuration how wide the lanes are. of the highway. International Truck Introduces All-New HX Series International Truck launched the International HX Series, a new line of Class 8 premium vocational trucks designed to deliver the strength and endurance required for the severe service industry. This is the first all-new vehicle introduced by International Truck since 2010. “The launch of the HX Series is an opportunity for International to recapture a leading position in the vocational market — a segment we previously led,” said Troy Clarke, president and CEO, Navistar Inc. “The launch of the HX Series underscores our commitment to innovation, our dedication to uptime and our position as a leader within the industry.” The new truck series will replace the International PayStar model. “The design of our new HX Series is based on in-depth discussions with leading users of severe service applications,” said Bill Kozek, president, Truck and Parts, Navistar Inc. “Each of the four models in the series has been engineered to deliver unmatched performance for the most punishing jobs, while making operators more productive.” International is taking orders for this vehicle immediately. The first vehicles will be delivered this spring. HX Series Addresses Full Range of Applications Four HX Series models will be offered, with both set-forward and set-back front axle models in either short or long hood, depending on the application. • The HX515 is a 115 in. (292 cm) BBC set-forward axle straight truck with primary vocations including concrete mixer, construction dump, refuse/roll-off and crane. • The HX615 is a 115 in. including heavy haul tractor, construction dump and platform stake/crane. The HX515 and the HX615 models are powered by Navistar N13 engines, while the HX520 and HX620 models offer the Cummins ISX15 engine. Each model in the HX Series delivers on four key principles of design: maximum strength and durability, driver productivity, bold styling and superior uptime. “The HX Series combines aggressive styling, unstoppable capability and drivercentric features to appeal to vocational truck owners in a whole new way,” said Denny Mooney, senior vice president, global product development, Navistar Inc. “All you need to do is get behind the wheel of this truck and you will see that this is a major step forward in design, all with the driver in mind.” Strength and Durability • Each model has a huck-bolted frame and cross members, which produce superior clamping force to minimize vibration and maximize structural integrity. • An available 12.5 by .5 in. (31.7 by 1.3 cm) single rail delivers 3.5 million RBM at 13 percent less weight than a 10 in. (25.4 cm) rail, allowing room for a heavier load. • The industry's only dedicated vocational aluminum cab offers better durability than steel.

• The three-piece Metton hood is stronger and lighter than fiberglass and is designed to resist cracking. • Doors feature stainless steel piano hinges for superior strength. • The industry's strongest tow pin is rated at 150,000 lbs. (68,039 kg) for extreme recovery towing. Driver Productivity • The maneuverability and visibility of each truck in the HX Series is best-inclass. • A 40-degree wheel cut on both right and left turns allows for improved maneuverability, while angled fenders provide greater wheel clearance to help power through challenging grounds. • The hood’s low angle makes for enhanced front forward visibility, and the larger rear window compared to the company’s prior model allows for superior rear visibility. • The HX Series is equipped with the all-new DriverFirst cab air suspension, designed with 52 in. (132 cm) springs to produce a supremely comfortable and quiet ride reducing driver stress and improving productivity. • For faster and more convenient access, the HX Series hood has an assist mechanism requiring little effort to open.

Bold and Aggressive Styling • Hoods and grilles across the entire lineup are designed to look great and stand out on the road and at the work site. • Customers will have options for bright finishes. • The interior was ergonomically designed to offer more room for driver comfort and productivity. • The contoured door handles add hip room and storage space. • The central console is angled for easy reach to controls. • There is easy access to cup holders and the overhead console. • The standard tilt/telescoping steering column adjusts to accommodate any size driver. • Gauges are designed and positioned to deliver optimal visibility and vital information at a glance. • LED lighting is standard throughout, as are air conditioning, power windows and power locks. Industry-Leading Uptime • Consistent with the International mission, the HX Series has been tested and validated to provide industry-leading uptime, with the sort of durability and endurance that customers demand, according to the manufacturer. • At the Navistar Proving Grounds in Indiana, the HX Series was subjected to accelerated life testing, which simulates 10 years of wear and tear and vibration in extreme duty cycles. • Vehicles underwent staggered bumps testing, which generated torsional twist in the chassis, to ensure suspension components were stabilized and equalized. • Each model also was subjected to severe duty ditch event, in which a fully loaded vehicle is run through four ditch events that are 12 in. (30.5 cm) in depth. For more information, visit InternationalTrucks.com/HXSeries. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

The XL 120 Low-Profile HDG comes in the standard 53 ft. (16 m) overall length, or a 55 ft. (16.7 m) version for even longer loads. With 54-½ in. (138 cm) axle spacing, the

53-ft. (152 cm) long trailer has a main deck that offers a full 26 ft. (7.9 m) in the well and 60-in. (152 cm) axle spacing also is available. The main deck is constructed with four 16-in. (40.6 cm) tall, fullycambered I-beams connected with 10-in. (25.4 cm) and 4-in. (10 cm) stubbed junior I-beams on 12-in. (30.5 cm) alternating centers for maximum strength, as well as 24in. (61 cm) loaded deck height with 8 in. (20 cm) of ground clearance. The trailer also features standard 31-in. (78.7 cm) front flip

ramps, seven bent D-rings and 12 chain drops per side, and heavyduty swing-out outriggers on 24in. centers to combine for a completely equipped main deck, ready for any piece of equipment. The last three cross members in the main deck are recessed to make a bucket well for the bucket of an excavator to sit low in without damaging the cylinder while the open boom trough in the rear bridge provides a place for the arm to ride safely. The 32 degree rear bridge transition features traction

aids for loading. The rear deck is prepped for a 2-axle booster, resulting in an extremely flexible trailer, allowing for more varied loads that are able to go through more areas. The 3-axle trailer can be set up as a straight 4-axle using a pin-on or as a 3 + 2 using a spreader bar with two axles at the end. For more information, visit xlspecializedtrailer.com. Mack Trucks to Serve as ‘Official Hauler of NASCAR’ Mack Trucks and NASCAR announced a multi-year agreement designating Mack as the “Official Hauler of NASCAR.” Mack made the announcement during NASCAR’s DAYTONA 500 media day event. As part of the agreement, Mack provided a fleet of custom-designed Mack Pinnacle sleeper models spec’d to answer the challenges of the grueling NASCAR schedule. “Mack and NASCAR are two fundamentally American brands, and we couldn’t be more excited to join forces and serve as the ‘Official Hauler of NASCAR,’” said John Walsh, Mack vice president of marketing. “This partnership enables us to get Mack, our trucks and our technology in front of millions of NASCAR fans, a significant number of whom are part of the transportation industry.” Throughout the 36-race, 10-month long season, NASCAR haulers travel thousands of miles between race locations, delivering tons of critical technology and equipment to help ensure a successful race weekend. NASCAR’s fleet of Mack Pinnacle models embarked on its inaugural journey to NASCAR’s season-opening race, the DAYTONA 500, at Daytona International Speedway in Florida. “The Mack Trucks brand has been a part

of American culture for more than a century and is globally recognized for manufacturing a best-in-class product,” said Steve Phelps, NASCAR executive vice president and chief marketing officer. “The customdesigned Pinnacle models are masterfully engineered and we are proud that they will

lead the NASCAR convoy to the track each race weekend.” Each of NASCAR’s custom-spec’d Pinnacle models is equipped with Mack’s 13-L MP8 engine that delivers 505 hp. The trucks also are outfitted with the Mack mDRIVE automated manual transmission

that helps boost fuel efficiency and productivity without sacrificing performance. The Pinnacle model, like all Mack trucks sold in North America, is built in the U.S.A. The fleet also is armed with Mack GuardDog Connect, a telematics system that brings the right blend of technology and people together to maximize uptime. Acting as an onboard pit crew, GuardDog Connect proactively monitors critical fault codes that could shut a truck down. When a potential issue is detected, GuardDog Connect automatically notifies Mack OneCall agents at the 24/7 Mack Uptime Center, as well as the driver and designated fleet contact. An action plan for repairs, a check for available parts at the nearest service center and detailed repair instructions also are completed, all while the truck is still on the road. Support for the fleet of Pinnacle models will be led by Transource Truck & Trailer Center, a Mack dealer with seven locations across North Carolina. Mack partnered with Transource in providing the trucks. For more information, visit www.macktrucks.com. UNTIMED POWER BOOST: STRENGTH ON YOUR SCHEDULE We know what it’s like to sit in the operator’s seat when you hit solid rock. The power boost button on most excavators can deliver the extra force you need to break through – but only in short bursts. We knew there had to be a better way, so we took our jobsite experience and collaborated with our engineers. The result is an untimed power boost that comes standard in all KOBELCO conventional excavators from the SK210LC to the SK500LC. It provides all the extra muscle you need continuously so you can power through the toughest jobs without interruption.

This system for Bosworth Trucking in Vernon, BC, Canada, is a rock and wood separator. Now on a job site, the extensive amounts of gravel and rock hauled in can be run through this wash plant/separator, which removes the lighter wood products from the rock. It can be recycled and used again on the next job area.

Many different sizes and configurations of crushing and screening plants are made in this assembly area. RD Olson can accommodate customer requests for forward- or rear-facing plants, as well as other custom orders. This jaw crusher is being trailer mounted.

Many states are now requiring the logging industry to use heavy-duty forestry cabs. RD Olson installs cabs as shown on this Doosan excavator.

With a large facility, RD Olson can stock plants ready for shipment to dealers and customers across the country.

With an extensive parts warehouse to manage, the team of John Kehrli (L), purchasing agent, and Kris Cox, parts manager, keeps everything running smoothly.

Global Launch Scheduled...

Powerscreen to Launch Warrior 1400XE at bauma 2016

The Warrior 1400XE has been designed to meet the needs of customers for whom electricity is a preferred power source and opens up the possibility to run the machine indoors.

Powerscreen will host its global launch of the new electrically driven Warrior 1400XE mobile heavy duty screen at bauma 2016. From April 11 to 17, Powerscreen will exhibit the mammoth Premiertrak 600 jaw crusher alongside the new screening model at the Terex booth FM711. Commenting on the line-up, Colin Clements, Powerscreen global product line director said, “This is a very important year in Powerscreen’s history. In 2016 we mark 50 years of power and success and what better way to start the celebrations than with a global machine launch at bauma on the industry’s largest stage. Our team of crushing and screening experts look forward to meeting new and existing customers at the show to share how our equipment and features can add real value to their businesses.” Product Manager of Powerscreen Oliver Donnelly explained some of the thinking behind the new model. “The electrically driven Warrior 1400XE shows our response to customer demand and our commitment to embracing a more environmentally aware approach to innovation. This latest development utilizes a combination of highly efficient electrical components and clever design to deliver the lowest possible cost for every ton of material processed through the machine. While we are excited about the low running costs, we are proud to have produced a machine where customers will also quickly see dramatic savings in the costs associated with maintenance and servicing. Versatility has definitely not been compromised.” Powerscreen Warrior 1400XE Electrically Driven Screen The Warrior 1400XE has been designed to meet the needs of customers for whom electricity is a preferred power source and opens up the possibility to run the machine indoors. It can be powered by electricity generated by other Powerscreen models, e.g., the Premiertrak 600. The Warrior

1400XE builds on the success of the standard Warrior 1400X model with its single shaft, high amplitude 12 by 4.5 ft. (3.6 by 1.25 m) screenbox and the chassis riser option giving enhanced stockpiling capacity. It also has several important service and maintenance features including the Powerscreen “Stay-Clean” system under the feeder and a jack-up screen system allowing easy access for screen media changes. Depending on feed material the output capacity for this machine is up to 551 tons (500 t) per hour. The main benefit of the Warrior 1400XE is the variety of power options available. It can be self-powered with its own 72kVA generator, or be connected to a mains electricity supply for even further reductions in cost of ownership. For customers who understand the advantages of a packaged solution, the Warrior 1400XE also can be powered from an electric drive crusher with a barely noticeable effect on the crusher fuel consumption, according to the manufacturer. This has the added benefit of eliminating the engine maintenance on the Warrior. Similarly in regions of the world where we need to operate in high altitude or in high ambient temperatures, the Warrior 1400XE can be powered as part of a machine train from a single gen-set, which can be oversized to handle any de-rating caused by the operating environment. There are many other scenarios where this machine will be seen as the right solution. For example, the Warrior 1400XE is more suited to running indoors than a conventional diesel-hydraulic machine and the extremely low noise levels also will be advantageous in many circumstances, according to the manufacturer. Powerscreen Premiertrak 600 Jaw Crusher The Powerscreen Premiertrak 600 is a high performance primary jaw crushing plant, which is easy to set up, versatile and engineered for quarrying, demolition and mining applications that require high production capabilities. At the heart

of the Premiertrak 600, is a 47 by 32 in. (119 by 81 cm) modern jaw chamber incorporating a robust construction with many user-friendly features, such as a fully hydraulic CSS range of 3 to 8 in. (7.6 to 20 cm) and a reversing system to clear blockages quickly for increased uptime. The aggressive stroke and high inertia flywheels ensure high production rates and excellent reduction ratios. The machine can produce up to 661 tons (600 t) per hour and has a proven track record of excellent performance by crushing some of the hardest rock in the world with ease in Finland, Sweden and Germany, according to the manufacturer. Underlining the ease of set-up Ed O’Donohue, an operator in Ireland said, “When the machine first arrived, we were hugely impressed with the modern design and robust construction. For a machine in that class range at more than 70 tonnes, we expected it to be quite complicated to set up and get operational, but in fact the opposite was true. The machine was crushing within minutes of being tracked off the transport truck.” The diesel-hydraulic and diesel-electric variants of the Premiertrak 600 have been designed and constructed to deliver maximum production and performance with increased uptime and low running costs. The high capacity jaw is fed by a vibrating grizzly feeder with variable speed control and a large grizzly area to maximise removal of fine material enabling maximum wear life of jaw plates within the crusher chamber. The bypass chute also is fitted with wear-resistant liners as standard, and incorporates an adjustable five-position deflector plate to divert material to either the product or side conveyors. Portable Hopper Eliminates Surges The new portable hopper feeder from KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens is now offered as a highwayportable rental tool designed to introduce material into a plant and eliminate surges in quarry systems. Built with scissors action grizzly fingers designed to minimize wedging of materials, the portable hopper feeder is ideal for loader feeding material to screening, crushing and washing plants, according to Jodi Heirigs, product manager of KPI-JCI and Astec Mobile Screens. Material feed rate can be controlled with the use of a discharge gate and/or variable frequency drive (VFD). “Our portable hopper feeder is built with a flat grizzly instead of a standard sloped grizzly, making it highway portable and ideal for rental fleets,” Heirigs said. “Producers who seek to control their material feed rate and maintain a consistent material processing speed throughout their operation will benefit from this equipment.” The portable hopper feeder features a 20-cu.-yd. (15.3 cu m) hopper and is available with a wireless remote to operate the hydraulic grizzly dump. An

Metso’s HRC 3000 High-Pressure Grinding Roll Provides Energy-Efficient Solution Energy efficiency is the key to success at modern mines and quarries. The most potential for energy and cost savings can be realized in the comminution process, where ore is ground and crushed into smaller particles. With the HRC 3000, one of the largest, fullyoperating high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) in the world, Metso provides an energy-efficient solution with a range of features, aimed at getting more value from every ton of ore, according to the manufacturer. The HRC 3000 was the result of a close collaboration between Metso and Freeport-McMoRan Inc. The goal was to develop a highly efficient HPGR crushing circuit for the newly constructed Metcalf concentrator at Freeport-McMoRan’s copper mine in Morenci, Ariz. In approximately four years, the team went from a design concept to the largest fully operating HPGR in the world. Demonstrated Efficiency The HRC 3000 started operating at Freeport-McMoRan’s copper mine in May 2014. The installed unit is allows for fewer lines of equipment, which reduces the amount of ancillary equipment. To date, the unit has operated for more than 8,400 hours and has crushed more than 34 million tons of porphyry copper ore. Metso’s solution has provided the Morenci mine with several benefits, including an estimated 13.5 percent increase in energy efficiency over traditional HPGRs based on pilot scale testing, according to the manufacturer. The HRC 3000 is the first full-scale HPGR to incorporate revolutionary design features like the flanged tire design and the arch-frame. Depending on the application, the total capacity of this HPGR can exceed over 5,400 tons (4,899 t) per hour of ore. “In addition to boosting the equipment’s energy efficiency, our main goal was to innovate and to push the existing boundaries in order to ensure a valuable solution to our customer. This HPGR is not only a larger scale version of what was currently available to the market, but also applies technological solutions to overcome some inherent concerns typically associated with traditional HPGRs, including skewing and edge effect,” said Victoria Herman,

MB America’s Live Demo Draws Crowd at World of Concrete In the Silver Lot of the Las Vegas Convention Center, an excavator and a skid loader picked up large concrete chunks with a jaw crusher attachment — signaling to passersby that the crushing action was about to begin. MB America’s crusher attachments smash another round of concrete debris and precast concrete at World of Concrete 2016. Last year, MB America crushed the World of Concrete 2015 event with its live crushing demonstrations. This year, at World of Concrete 2016, the company crushed for another record crowd of attendees. “You have to see the MB crusher crush in person. There’s no other way to describe how it works without seeing it for yourself,” said Max Ravazzolo, C.E.O. of MB America. “Once you know that the machine can crush through concrete and spit out the rebar, you will be so impressed that you’ll start to wonder what areas of your job you can start crushing, where you can start saving some time, and when you can start adding more money back into your pockets.” The company occupied an outside booth in the Silver Lot at the Las Vegas Convention Center, where more than half the booth was dedicated to the live crushing demonstrations. The excavatormounted attachment, the BF90, was crushing down to a 3-in. minus, while the skidloader-mounted attachment, the MB-L120, was crushing down to a 1-in. minus. The company also showed attendees how the crushing attachments are able to crush materials with rebar. Using an iron separator,

MB America to Feature BF90 Attachment at NDA MB America will be attending the National Demolition Association (NDA) for the fourth year. This year, the company will feature a display of crushed concrete, asphalt and rocks produced by MB’s BF90 crusher attachment. The crushed material will give attendees a visual of the various sizes the MB crusher can crush down to. The company’s BF product line — and its other crushing attachments — has an adjustable output and uses the auxiliary hydraulic system on excavators, skid steers and backhoes. “Imagine what you can do with your materials if you could crush them yourself. You will have that flexibility when you see the materials the MB crusher can produce,” said Max Ravazzolo, C.E.O. of MB America. MB’s crushing attachments allow contractors to crush materials — which otherwise would be considered waste — to reuse on the job site. Its crushing attachments have

the ability to crush railway sleepers, hollow core walls, reinforced and non-reinforced concrete, natural stone and asphalt into reusable aggregate materials for base or fill. Contractors will be able to reuse materials immediately at the job site and provide a greener option in recycling waste materials. By reusing the materials, contractors and businesses can save time and money in reducing waste and trucking costs. MB’s product line includes crushing and screening attachments, 360 degree grapples, and rotary head drum cutters for a wide scope of work — which includes demolition and excavation, road work, quarries, mining, pipeline work and environmental reclamation projects. the excavator-mounted attachment was equipped to remove rebar from the pile of crushed concrete and move rebar to the side of the work area — without the operator having to leave the cab of the excavator. At the non-demo area, MB America featured two more excavator-mounted crusher attachments (BF70 and BF120), the largest skid-loader-mounted crusher attachment (MB-L200), and the latest skid-loader-

mounted screening attachment (MBLS140). MB’s product line has expanded to include several new attachments for the construction and demolition industry. Now, MB offers screening attachments for skid loaders and backhoe loaders, 360 degree grapples, and rotary head drum cutters for a wide scope of work — which includes demolition and excavation, road work, quarries, mining, pipeline work and environmental reclamation projects. MB products are available for any excavator, skid loader or backhoe loader, regardless of brand or size. MB’s attachments use the auxiliary hydraulic system of the excavators, skid steers and backhoes, allowing contractors to work in tight areas, difficult access locations, steep slopes and urban areas. Contractors will be able to reuse materials immediately at the job site and provide a greener option in recycling waste materials. By reusing the materials, contractors and businesses can save time and money in reducing waste and trucking costs. For more information, call 855/622-7874 or visit www.mbamerica.com. ronPlanet/Cat Auction Services sold more than 2,350 items for $93.8 million in gross merchandise volume (GMV) at its auctions in Kissimmee, Fla., from Feb. 8 to 12, 2016, an increase of 95 percent over GMV of $48 million for its three-day sale in February 2015. “This year’s Cat Auction Services Florida sale was our largest auction ever, with unprecedented support from our customers,” said Gregory J. Owens, IronPlanet chairman and CEO. “The fact that we nearly doubled GMV versus our sale last year clearly demonstrates the power of our marketplace and the global reach of our online platform. “The industry recognition and groundswell of support from all of our sellers, including Cat dealers, Volvo, Komatsu and other dealers, as well as major OEMs was fantastic. We had planned for great things, and indeed, IronPlanet changed the Florida auction landscape this year.” IronPlanet had record attendance with more than 100,000 unique online attendees from 175 countries in addition to more than

IronPlanet/Cat Auction Services’ February 2016 Florida auctions got off to a big start on Feb. 8 and continued its momentum throughout the week. Equipment received international bids from bidders in 48 countries. “We were pleased to partner with IronPlanet this year at their Cat Auction Services sale in Florida,” said Mike Shane, used equipment specialist of Alta Equipment Company. “I was impressed with the selection and diversity of equipment at this year’s auction. It was a great event and we were pleased with our results.” Alta Equipment Company is a provider of industrial forklifts, heavy construction equipment and warehouse solutions in the Midwest. IronPlanet expanded its annual Florida auction to a fifth day this year in order to accommodate the many sellers who wanted to sell in this event. The auction showcased equipment from leading OEMs, construction and rental companies, dealers and national retailers, including Caterpillar, Volvo, John Deere, Komatsu, JLG, Genie, Wal-Mart and more. uyers from around the world visited Ritchie Bros.’ 200-acre Orlando, Fla., site for the year's largest equipment auction. In just five days, Ritchie Bros. sold a record 10,700-plus items for more than $172 million. This year’s unreserved auction on Feb. 15 to 19 attracted more than 9,850 bidders from 79 countries. Out-of-state buyers purchased more than $137 million of equipment (80 percent), including more than $40 million purchased by out-of-country buyers (23 percent). “Orlando is one of our flagship operations — and it’s clear from the results this week equipment buyers and sellers value the solutions we provide,” said Ravi Saligram, chief executive officer, Ritchie Bros. “We’re very pleased to have been able to help 985 consignors sell equipment this week, including both end-users and dealers. Due to the diverse buying audience we attract from different sectors and geographies, we achieved consistent and solid pricing all week through most asset classes, with particularly strong results for low-hour, late-model, well-maintained equipment. I am very proud of our team’s efforts in conducting a world-class sale.” Bidders participated in the auction in person, online in real time at rbauction.com, and by proxy. Online buyers purchased more than $64 million of equipment (38 percent). All items were sold without minimum bids or reserve prices. “This is not just a U.S. auction; this is a global event with participation from around the world,” said Terry Dolan, president (U.S. and Latin America), Ritchie Bros. “People travel from across the globe to attend this auction, and thousands more participate online from as far away as Belgium, Costa Rica, Colombia, Vietnam, and more.”

Ritchie Bros. sold equipment and trucks from all the top manufacturers, including Caterpillar, Volvo, John Deere, Komatsu, Terex, Grove, JLG, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Freightliner, International and more.
