AEM noted that the 13-percent gain for 2012 follows 43-percent growth in 2011 and 28-percent growth in 2010, after a 2009 decline of 38 percent in the depths of the recession. “Exports have been called a bright spot for the U.S. economy, and this has been especially true for construction equipment manufacturers. Rental Industry’s Show Attendance Reveals Upward Trend
A
n active trade show floor, sold-out seminars and positive energy and enthusiasm at The Rental Show 2013 in Las Vegas reflected the equipment rental industry’s upward trend. The Rental Show 2013 marked its fourth straight year of increased attendance growth. The number of rental businesses represented increased this year as well and was the highest total since 2006, which was the 50th anniversary of The Rental Show. The total number of attendees was 5,365 from 2,480 rental businesses. Attendees came from throughout the United States, Canada and more than 40 countries to The Sands Expo and Convention Center for the Feb. 10 to 13 show. “Overall, The Rental Show reflects where this industry is headed. Everyone anticipated a great show because of the attitude, tone and urgency we’ve seen from attendees on buying equipment,” said Christine Wehrman, CEO of the American Rental Association, organizers of The Rental Show. Next year, The Rental Show will be held Feb. 9 to 12 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. For more information, visit TheRentalShow.com. The rush was on when the doors to the trade show opened.
The opportunity to see the latest equipment up-close attracts thousands of rental business personnel to The Rental Show.
Captain Mark Kelly, commander of the space shuttle Endeavor’s final flight, was The Rental Show’s keynote speaker on Feb. 11.
More than 600 companies exhibited at The Rental Show 2013.
Rental business personnel take advantage of the opportunities to ask questions one-on-one about equipment before purchasing.

Reform Will Gives Employers, Workers Tools Needed to Protect Retirement Plans The chief executive officer of the Associated General Contractors of America, Stephen E. Sandherr, issued the following statement in response to the release of the National Coordinating Committee for Multi-employer Plans Retirement Security Review Commission’s proposed plan for preserving, remediating and innovating multiemployer retirement plans: “The Commission’s plan represents a pragmatic, reasonable and — most importantly for taxpayers — self-sufficient approach to preserving and protecting nearly half a trillion dollars worth of multiemployer retirement plans. These retirement plans, many of which are funded by construction firms, are needed to ensure long-term security for tens of thousands of construction workers. As important, the retirement plans’ funds provide a vital source of capital for domestic investments in everything from small businesses to major infrastructure projects. The steps outlined in the com-
mission’s plan give employers and their workers the tools they need to protect their retirement plans. “The recommendations included in this plan also acknowledge two distinct realities. First, taxpayers will not be asked to contribute to the preservation of these retirement plans, and second, workers and employers alike must be willing to reconsider the long-term viability of the current defined-benefit plan model in place in this country. Indeed, the steps outlined in the commission’s plan have the potential to safeguard many current retirement plans while offering a way to provide retirement security for future construction workers. That is why we will work to support swift legislative approval of the types of measures outlined in this plan and encourage employers and their workers to adopt them.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)

tant than ever for our lawmakers to enact job-creating export and manufacturing policies.” U.S. construction equipment exports to Asia grew 2 percent compared to the previous year for a total $3.2 billion, while exports to South America increased 6 percent to total $4.6 billion. Central America’s purchases of U.S. construction equipment gained 13 percent for a total $2.3 billion; exports to Europe also grew 13 percent, and totaled $3.2 billion; and exports to Africa increased 14 percent to $1.5 billion. Exports of U.S. construction machinery to Canada gained 12 percent for a total $8.1 billion, and exports to Australia/Oceania jumped 42 percent to total $3.9 billion. The top 10 export destinations for American-made construction machinery in 2012 by dollar volume: (1) Canada — $8.1 billion, up 12 percent; (2) Australia — $3.8 billion, up 43 percent; (3) Mexico — $1.8 billion, up 13 percent; (4) Chile — $1.7 billion, up 25 percent; (5) South Africa — $894 million, up 31 percent; (6) Brazil — $886 million, down 7 percent; (7) Belgium — $806 million, up 43 percent; (8) Peru — $779 million, up 36 percent; (9) Russia — $715 million, up 10 percent; (10) China — $680 million, down 25 percent. tractors were able to get more work done on transportation projects, providing a market boost early this year.” While the recent uptick in highway construction is positive news for a sector that saw a four percent dip in activity during 2012, Black warned that it remains to be seen if the trend will continue, noting that while states have recently been obligating federal dollars at a good pace, contract awards for highway projects have been down, and nearly half the states are pulling back on their programs. The stalemate over the federal budget situation is another factor that could impact the market over the next few months, and it is unclear at this time if Congress will fund the highway and transit investment increases authorized last summer, or hold funding for these programs at the 2012 levels. “We are looking to see how state and local governments will deal with the federal budget sequestration, which went into effect March 1. While the federal highway, airport and non-capital transit investments will not be cut, the reductions in other programs adds further uncertainty into an already challenging situation for many state budgets,” explained Black. The term “value put in place” reflects actual work done on transportation construction projects and is an indicator of real-time market activity. For more information, visit www.artba.org.

Volvo Rents Expands Calif. Footprint With Turlock Store Volvo Rents, a worldwide provider of small-to-medium sized construction equipment, has opened a new rental center in Turlock, Calif. This is the latest move in the company’s continued expansion of its California rental business portfolio, increasing its statewide total to 14 rental centers. It also comes on the heels of a forecast by economists at IHS Global Insight that said California will lead the pack in a nationwide construction recovery through 2016. According to IHS stats, California will have the most construction dollars spent ($723 billion); will have the largest gain in yearly spending dollars ($76.40 billion); and have the third highest annual average percentage gain (15.6 percent). “There’s evidence showing a bit of sunshine for the construction industry that has seen too much rain. Yes, it’s being done in moderation and gradually, but the numbers are there,” said Mike Crouch, vice president of business development, Volvo Rents. “We couldn’t be more excited about further expanding our California footprint and providing the necessary equipment and services that will no doubt accelerate the projected recovery.” In addition to Volvo Rents’ expanding line of Volvo compact equipment — such as backhoe and skid steer loaders, compact wheel loaders, compact excavators and compaction equipment — the rental center carries a comprehensive line of essential equipment and tools for the construction, commercial, industrial and homeowner markets. The focus is on daily, weekly and monthly rentals. Located at 1400 South Avenue, the new store is open Monday through Friday, 6:30 am to 5:00 pm; Saturday, 6:30 am to 3:00 pm; and Sunday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. 24-hour service also is available every day of the week. CalTrans Deems California’s Bridges, Overcrossings Safe SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) The state transportation department said Feb. 7 it has determined that the foundations underpinning thousands of bridges, overcrossings and other structures throughout California are safe. The department undertook an extensive review of its testing data after a series of stories in The Sacramento Bee raised questions about testing of the concrete foundations on the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge. In its review, CalTrans said irregularities were “exceedingly rare’’ and limited in scope. “The subject matter may be complicated,
but the conclusion is simple: California’s transportation infrastructure rests on dependable foundations,’’ the agency’s director, Malcolm Dougherty, said in a letter to state Sen. Mark DeSaulnier. DeSaulnier, D-Concord, chairs the Senate transportation committee and convened a hearing on the matter last year. At the time, he asked for an independent review by the Legislative Analyst’s Office, a report he expects to receive in the next few months. He said it was critical that the foundationtesting data be thoroughly examined before the scheduled opening of the new span, which is the eastern half of a bridge that con-
nects San Francisco to Oakland and Berkeley. The $6.3 billion bridge is expected to open by the end of the year. “We know that the existing bridge is not safe,’’ DeSaulnier said. The Bee found that a CalTrans technician who tested the structural integrity of the new span’s main tower falsified tests on other projects. The newspaper’s reporting also raised questions about whether a 19-ft. section of concrete in that foundation had been allowed to harden to the required strength. CalTrans said experts who analyzed more
than 23,000 tests found that the results were “demonstrably unreliable’’ in just 11 cases. Engineers then conducted structural tests to determine whether the concrete was stable. Despite its positive findings, the agency said it was implementing changes. They include subjecting test data to a quality control assessment as a way to verify the accuracy of results and requiring greater oversight of the testing operations in the field. GT-3200...
GOMACO Debuts Sidewalk Paver at World of Concrete GOMACO introduced the GT-3200 sidewalk paver with an adjustable aggregate base mold on the front and a sidewalk paving mold on the rear at World of Concrete 2013. It’s a three-track paver designed specifically for zero-clearance sidewalk rehabilitation projects, fulfilling a contractor’s unique request. The GOMACO GT-3200 can be equipped with a frontmounted adjustable aggregate base mold to spread the base aggregate for the sidewalk. During the first pass, rock is placed on grade and an auger spreads the material, while three pan vibrators mounted to the mold start the compaction process. The base mold is equipped with two heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders that provide 14 in. (35.6 cm) of hydraulic lift for setting the grade depth below the track line and raising the mold for the paving pass. During the second paving pass, the sidewalk is slipformed with a unique, minimum-clearance trailing mold. The GT3200 sidewalk paver has a 20 in. (50.8 cm) wide, 14 ft. (4.3 m) long folding conveyor. The conveyor allows ready-mix trucks to discharge from the street instead of driving over existing curb to reach the paver. The hydraulic pivoting conveyor also has been designed to rotate 180 degrees to allow for easy loading of concrete into the hopper from either side of the machine and to avoid obstacles associated with zeroclearance paving. The sidewalk mold features hydraulic adjustable sideplates to form the GOMACO edge, while a trailing stainless pan provides the superior finish. The sidewalk mold also can be equipped with a bar inserter for placing transverse bars into the slab, if required by project specifications. The GT-3200 sidewalk paver also features all-track steering, which saves time getting on and off stringline, allows better job-site mobility, and ease in loading and unloading for transport. It can be transported without removing either the front-mounted adjustable aggregate base mold or the rear-mounted sidewalk paving mold. Simply fold the conveyor and drive the GT-3200 onto the trailer for transport. It features the latest in GOMACO machine control with the exclusive G+ system with a new full color screen. G+ is a powerful controller for paving accuracy and electronic monitoring of steering and grade. G+, combined with the GT-3200’s C4.4T Caterpillar engine with 91 hp (67.9 kW), provides plenty of power for sidewalk paving, according to the manufacturer. WHILE SOME PEOPLE ARE HAVING A PROBLEM GRASPING THE CONCEPT, THEY’RE SURE NOT HAVING ANY DIFFICULTY GRABBING THE RESULTS. It’s a rubber tire roller that vibrates with enough centrifugal force to equal the output of a 55,000 pound pneumatic. The GW750 handles the toughest HMA mixes with ease, getting balanced high densities from the top through the bottom of the mat. Great on SMA, too! And it provides a sound interlock between new overlays and profiled surfaces. It’s bonus time!

Ritchie Bros. Pulls Off ‘The Big One’ in Orlando, Florida By James Panarella CEG WEB EDITOR
Every year, thousands of heavy equipment buyers flock to the Florida Auctions in search of Iron at the right price. Many auction companies see a huge opportunity to move heavy equipment during this time, and the world’s largest equipment auction company is no different. Over the years, Ritchie Bros. “The Big One” has grown into the largest auction event of the season, and this year’s auction was no exception. The numbers of the event demonstrate how massive the scale of this auction truly is. The Ritchie Bros. Orlando site has grown to more than 200 acres over the years. That’s the equivalent of almost two hundred football fields filled with heavy equipment. For this year’s auction, approximately 8,300 bidders registered to bid on more than 9,400 items over six days. The total dollar amount of equipment sold at this year’s auction stands at $176 million. Preparation for the event must begin months in advance. Since the Orlando site is a permanent facility owned by Ritchie Bros., sellers can begin moving their equipment onto the site weeks ahead of time. As the sale draws near, the Orlando site becomes a personnel whirlpool, drawing in employees from all over the country and Canada to Florida. “We have a regular staff here all year long, but as we get closer to the event, our people start coming in from all over,” said Rob Mackay, president of Ritchie Bros. “We have about 200 employees here for the six days in Orlando. That includes yard staff, equipment detailers, customer service representatives, and the temporary workers needed to carry out the auction.” The Orlando site also is large enough to contain an entire equipment refurbishing facility that is devoted to making the equipment look like new on auction day. In the weeks and days leading up to the auction, the facility resembles an assembly line factory, with equipment being cleaned, painted, and repaired on a continual basis. Huge 25-ft. bays are filled with equipment waiting to be treated by the Ritchie Bros. staff. This care in presenting the equipment at its best continues right up until the moment the equipment rolls on the ramp, as washers give the items one final clean before presentation. During the six days of the auction, Ritchie Bros. relies on its strongest auction callers, and Butch Graham is among them. Graham, who has more than 20 years of experience calling Ritchie Bros. auctions, was one of many callers present during the action in Orlando. That length of time could stress a caller’s voice to the point of breaking, but Graham takes it all in stride. “I’ve had to
train my voice,” said Graham. “I don’t smoke, and I use my voice constantly to make it stronger. I see it as another muscle that needs to be exercised.“ Graham estimated that on a good day he could call an auction “for two hours straight” before needing a rest. “When you do what you love, it’s easy,” he said. Once the auction is over, Ritchie Bros. partnership with UShip ensures the equipment gets to where it needs to safely and securely. The service allows for real-time estimates and competitive quotes for moving equipment from the auction site to virtually anywhere in the world. In the end, this year’s show was of a scale rarely seen outside of this seasonal event. All of the Ritchie Bros. employees will return home after a hectic week in the Florida sun after a job well done. But they won’t get too much rest — there is next year’s event to plan for. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG see RITCHIE page 56

Each day, hundreds of interested buyers roam the vast Orlando site in search of Iron at a good price.
The Orlando site features what has become a staple at Ritchie Bros. sites — the equipment ramp.
The 2013 Ritchie Bros. Orlando auction drew more than 8,300 bidders, and featured more than 9,400 items for sale.
Bidders gather before the equipment ramp to view the equipment they are most interested in.

Preparation for Event Must Begin Months in Advance
The Ritchie Bros. Orlando site has grown to more than 200 acres over the years, enough room for almost 200 football fields.
The Ritchie Bros. auction spotters have to have a quick eye to catch bids coming in from the audience. RITCHIE from page 54
The registration area is a hub of activity at any Ritchie Bros. auction, but especially so during “The Big One.”
Butch Graham, a 20 year vet as a Ritchie Bros. auction caller, uses his voice as another muscle and trains it as hard as a professional athlete would train their own muscles.
Large 25-ft. bays are used for the largest pieces of equipment in the refurbishing center, which paints, cleans and repairs equipment to specification.
The auction callers take information not only from the crowd in front of them, but also from information coming to them from online bidders.
All of the equipment that goes through the refurbishing center will come out looking in tip-top shape, ready to sell to the highest bidder.

Ritchie Bros. Breaks Multiple Site Records in Fort Worth
R
itchie Bros. Auctioneers sold more than $44 million of equipment items and trucks at a two-day unreserved public auction held at its permanent auction site in Fort Worth, Texas on March 5 and 6. New auction site records were set for total registered bidders (more than 3,900) and total online bidders (more than 2,300). Equipment highlights included a 2009 Freightliner Cascadia truck tractor that sold for $49,000 and formed part of the professionally maintained, 23-truck Walmart fleet featured in the Fort Worth auction as well as a 2008 Caterpillar D8T crawler tractor that sold for $282,500. In total, more than 3,100 equipment items and trucks were sold in the auction for more than 470 sellers — every item was sold to the highest bidder, without minimum bids or reserve prices. “This auction offered one of the largest quantities of highquality late-model equipment that I have seen at our auctions here in Fort Worth,” said Adam Kawulok, regional sales manager, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. “The unprecedented number of late-model Caterpillar D8T crawler tractors and professionally maintained Walmart trucks that were sold is just a glimpse of the great collection of well-maintained, latemodel equipment that we continue to offer at our Fort Worth auctions. And, with so many of the people bidding in our auctions being end-users, selection is very important for our buying customers. It’s because of that and the ability of Ritchie Bros. to reach buyers from all over — as was shown by the multiple records set at this auction — that we create a competitive bidding environment which allows us to achieve strong values for the sale of our equipment.” More than 3,900 people from more than 60 countries, including 48 U.S. states, nine Canadian provinces and one Canadian territory, registered to bid in person or online in real time at the auction. Bidders from outside Texas purchased more than $24 million (55 percent of total gross auction proceeds). More than 2,300 of the bidders taking part in the auction registered to bid online and purchased more than $19 million of equipment online (43 percent of total gross auction proceeds).
